What Is A Day With the Birds?

A Day With the Birds: Community Science & the Audubon Christmas Bird Count is an approximately 1,000-square-foot professionally developed traveling exhibition exploring the relationship between birds, people, science, habitat, and conservation.
Through photographs, interpretive panels, historical materials, bird specimens, interactive educational elements, and bilingual interpretation in English and Spanish, visitors can explore community science, the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, bird identification, migration, conservation, habitat, and the history of people involved in bird science.
The goal is not simply to teach visitors about birds—it is to show people how they can become participants in their conservation.
Inside the Exhibition

Why Bring This Exhibition to South Florida?
South Florida sits along an important bird migration corridor and is home to diverse communities that can benefit from accessible, place-based environmental education.
SFAS wants to use A Day With the Birds as a gateway between learning about conservation and participating in conservation. A visitor’s experience should not end when they leave the exhibition.
SFAS plans to connect the exhibition with guided bird walks, environmental education, youth and family programs, school engagement, bilingual programming, community science, habitat restoration, native planting, volunteer opportunities, bird monitoring, and conservation stewardship.
Learning → Exploring → Participating → Conserving
Community Science and the Christmas Bird Count

At the heart of the exhibition is the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, a tradition that demonstrates how people can contribute to our understanding of birds through organized observation and community participation.
SFAS plans to use the exhibition to introduce new audiences to the Christmas Bird Count and other bird-focused community-science activities. Visitors can discover that meaningful observations about the natural world can become part of something larger.
For some visitors, the exhibition may be their first introduction to birding. For others, it may be the first time they see how birding, scientific observation, habitat restoration, native planting, monitoring, volunteerism, and conservation are connected.
