The sky was brightly overcast and there was much glare from behind the nest area, not good conditions for photography. The male flew in from behind the nest at about 10:10 and was greeted by the female who called briefly. They both looked down into the nest before the female flew off to the left (east), and the male assumed incubation duties. The male settled deeply into the nest and was out of sight much of the time. We think the male does sit deeper in the nest than the female, perhaps not surprising in view of his smaller size. The female landed in the usual roost in the pine along Pines Boulevard just to the east of the nest tree. In this view of the female's head you can see the residual effects of the injury she suffered last month. She spent some time preening and was still roosting there when we departed at about 10:15.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-27-Incubation-day-20-Another-exchange-at-10-10-td7573293.html","images":8},{"id":"7573294","topic":"7573293","order":2,"title":"Re: DEC 27 - Incubation day #20 - Another exchange at 10:10","author":"Lisa G","date":"2013-12-27T16:44:45.103000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Ken , I am glad your confirmed it was Joy that had the injury we thought it was the male .. great Pictures .. The first was at 6:48 AM, one minute after sunrise. I think it was the male (Pride) but it was distant and the light was poor: The second appeared 11 minutes later, at 6:59 AM. This eagle looked larger and had uniform wing feathering, so it may have been the female, Jewel: Yesterday morning I specifically watched for the eagles to pass over from a viewing location at the lake, where there is a view of the entire horizon. Sunrise was at 6:46 AM and I stood watch from about 6:35 until 7:05 AM, then continued on my walk but still looked up frequently when not occupied photographing egrets and a Pileated Woodpecker. I did not see any eagles. Going over my records, They were visible on 10 of the past 20 days, 18 of which I visited and submitted eBird Checklist. While this sounds like a lot of time, the Committee will be hard pressed to meet this deadline. Funding is by no means certain. Decisions must be made about where the camera should be placed, what kind of equipment and resources will be needed, initially and ongoing, (e.g., camera, platform, electric power, internet connection, Web hosting; necessary approvals from City and Florida FWC) and, of overriding concern, corporate or private funding sources. There is a planned educational component, which could be integrated into public and private schools' curricula. I feel there are opportunities here for media outlets, the cable company and electric utility company, and the City of Pembroke Pines to all join forces and help make this happen. A major corporate sponsor may consider the good will that can result from their visibility in supporting this effort. Think about this-- look at the statistics at the bottom of the main page of this FORUM. In less than one year there have been 46,000 visits to this FORUM. An eagle nest camera would attract many more \"hits,\" as students and the general public tune in repeatedly to see the details of the domestic life of these magnificent birds! Imagine having your company's name spread across the top of the Pembroke Pines Eagle Web Cam page. You will note that the DRAFT minutes of the Steering Committee contain sobering information about the lack of parking and viewing space at the nest site. Nest watchers will be limited to the sidewalk on the north side of Pines Boulevard. There will be no relief-- not even the possibility of having an elevated observation deck until at least the fall of 2011, when a new sidewalk will be installed on the south side of Pines, in front of the nest. This means TWO breeding seasons will pass without any accommodations for nest observers. Another important advantage of having a Nest Cam is that there would be much less disturbance and vehicular traffic at the nest site, as many would elect to do their viewing from the comfort of their home computer. The minutes may be viewed at the link on the main Web page, along with other pertinent documents, such as the FDOT report that explains the restrictions that are to be placed along the highway. Though we had been away for a month, I believe that I recognized Justice as being darker and having a white spot over his breastbone. Hope also seems to have a line of demarcation between a darker area in her neck and upper breast, and a lighter brown lower breast. The breast of Justice looks more uniformly dark. Both are developing some yellow at the base of their bills, and their eyes are dark. If any of you seasoned watchers can evaluate this description, or think I may have it backwards, please chime in! Because of other appointments, we could only stay for about a half hour, but it was great seeing our friends, both human and avian! We (PP eagle nest watchers) were not able to see what happens during the hatching, the day of hatching and the few days that follow. Very interesting. The two eaglets that were being fed this morning got into a beaking fight and it was scary to watch. Note that eagles are very sensitive to disturbance in the pre-nesting stage. She writes: I have given BayNews9 correct information regarding the status of the cell tower nest in Largo. The concern is over nearby traffic improvements/construction and how it may affect nearby businesses and what the current laws and guidelines are. They expect the story to air tomorrow. I'll forward the link. The adult eagles which nested at that tower last year were seen and photographed on the tower this week. I haven't seen the new numbers from FWC yet but there are approximately 30+ nests in cell towers in Florida. (28 as of last published report, 31 on my last count) Pinellas County had 8 bald eagles nest in or attempt to nest in cell towers last season. We have a lot of towers. The cell towers are also heavily occupied by Osprey. Meanwhile we have had quite a few eagle sightings in Pinellas County from southern Pinellas to the Pinellas/Pasco line along the coast where it seems we have a local concentration of bald eagles with some nests being only a half a mile apart. Several of those territories also have Great-horned Owls nearby. Another nest is currently in process of being documented in northwest Tarpon Springs. That area is not listed as core nesting area for bald eagles in the state however it does appear to be part of a defined important usage area and is at the southern tip of a long leaf pine forest along the coast which is excellent habitat for bald eagles. While the eagles are returning to their home bases now the nesting season officially runs from October 1st through May 15th. Bald Eagle's sensitivity to disturbance varies throughout the year with increased sensitivity at the beginning of the nesting season and late in the season when the young are 8 weeks of age. A few weeks ago an observer mentioned that more vegetation appeared to have been removed near the fence in recent months. FPL did need to enter the area during installation of the new power pole back in late September, 2014, but as I remember, they finished the work before the last breeding season began on October 1. I am quite certain that the fence was intact after that. We will need to follow up with the City to assure that the eagles are not disturbed during this critical time. So far Jewel has been working on the nest but has not been reported as remaining on the nest for any extended period of time. We don't know where she was raised and as a novice breeder she may be more susceptible to disturbance. Please report any signs such as copulation and broodiness. Then Hope flew off, first circling over the pasture to the NW, and then to the roost tree, to a flimsy branch just under the parent, and had trouble balancing on it. The adult flew off, and several Common Grackles started attacking Hope, sometimes actually picking at her tail and back. She put up with it for quite a while. Could not see any other eagle. It is possible that an adult was deep in the nest, as the left front of the nest is built up quite a bit, but there was no evidence of this. I think the eagle we could see was the male, as we could see its foot and the rear toe (hallux) did not look to be unusually long. A health condition and subsequent surgery kept me from visiting the nest since early October. Since then I moved to Connecticut where MaryLou and I have joined the household of our daughter, son-in-law and our two granddaughters. Reluctantly, I had to give up my duties as a Florida Audubon NestWatch volunteer. There have been only a few recent observations posted to the Pembroke Pines nest sub-FORUM (Thank you NotTooFast!). If anyone has technical problems in joining or posting observations and photos, please let me know. Surely the birds have laid eggs and may be expecting eaglets any day now. As the only Administrator of this FORUM, I really need some assistance. This only involves a few rather simple tasks such as screening and accepting requests from users to subscribe or become Members. Nabble has quite effective spam filters but all applicants must be vetted to be sure they are humans and not advertisers or trolls. If anyone wishes to serve as co-Administrator, please let me know. Ideally, the FORUM should be embedded on a dedicated web page. It must be a privately owned site as third-party web pages such as Blogger, WordPress and the like run into coding conflicts. There may be any number of co-Administrators, but it is easier to coordinate if there are only a few. South Florida Audubon expressed some interest in hosting a mirrored copy of the FORUM on their web site, but so far this has not materialized. Anyone with a web page can embed a copy of the entire Forum. Members can freely post as usual on the additional embedded copies, but only an Administrator may make changes in fthe structure of the pages or control access. Please let me know if you are interested. It is essential that all of the wonderful content, photos and history of these four nests are preserved (and new nests hopefully added in the future). To assure continuity of the FORUM someone (or several people) must share the Administrator duties. Reach me by posting a reply or by email: [email withheld] Thanks so much! Your dedication to the preservation of our local avian species, particularly our beloved Bald Eagles, is truly commendable. In recent weeks, we have encountered a significant challenge that threatens the integrity of our invaluable research data. As many of you are aware, our community has diligently gathered and documented essential information about the avian species in our region for several years. This data is not only fundamental to our understanding of local bird populations but also plays a pivotal role in our advocacy for the conservation of these magnificent creatures. Regrettably, unforeseen technical issues and data management concerns have placed this priceless research at risk. We are acutely aware of the importance of safeguarding this data for the benefit of future generations and the continued conservation of our Bald Eagles and other avian species. However, I am delighted to announce that we are taking decisive action to confront this challenge head-on. We have initiated discussions with skilled web developers who share our passion for avian conservation. Together, we are devoting our time and expertise to devise a comprehensive solution that will guarantee the preservation and accessibility of our research data. I want to assure you that we fully understand the urgency of this matter, and we are unwavering in our commitment to keeping you informed throughout this process. Your support and involvement have been instrumental in the success of the Bald Eagles of Broward County, and we deeply appreciate your dedication. If it takes more time for Pride and the new female to bond, can they just nest later than normal? We know time will tell all! My best respose is: I know that for many bird species, songbirds in particular, that their reproductive system goes through an annual cycle. The ovaries enlarge as breeding season approaches and regress afterward for the rest of the year. Raptors' cycles are typically synchronized with availability of prey so that when young are growing fastest prey is most plentiful. Great Horned Owls have greatest need when baby rabbits are most plentiful. Bald Eagles in the northern part of North America must finish breeding in time to fly south to find open water or, in the case of our South Florida eagles, north, to find fish closer to the surface in the cooler water. We were forgetting that the eagles are migratory, moving north in summer and have a serious annual timing to their breeding and movements. We're watching these resident Burrowing owls and Cooper's Hawks that are not as scheduled, but they also don't need to get anywhere far in summer, so being late is not a big deal. Our resident species may also rely on more urban food sources. Not sure whether they were a more important protein source than fish, but the Bald Eagles up north, especially Alaska subsist almost entirely on fish. I think this proves they are adaptable creatures, just as they have adjusted to the urban environment and the presence of humans. My guess is that the northern range was the norm earlier in time but that breeding to the south conferred certain advantages to those who wandered there to breed a long time ago, particularly a longer breeding season and food availability during the winter. Their smaller size provides relatively more surface area to cool them, while the northern eagles can better conserve heat because of a lower surface/mass ratio. This latter trait is common in many species. Those in the northern part of their ranges tend to be heavier and also often have darker plumage. Of course my theory may be upside-down, but I am not familiar with the fossil record of eagles. My guess is that they moved north as the glaciers retreated until about 14,000 years ago, but where did they move FROM? Maybe they started as smaller eagles in the south and their range slowly moved northward. They may have adapted in the opposite direction, becoming bigger and heavier up north. Please try to drop by if only to make spot observations to report on the welfare of the eagles. Since the nest has grown larger, it is more difficult to see the incubating bird, so be patient look for the bird to extend her neck or show the top of a white head to confirm that the nest is occupied. Look to see if the non-incubating adult is standing watch nearby. It is likely that the mate will at least return to the nest tree or an adjacent one to roost overnight, so evening and early morning reports will be useful. All the eggs have probably been deposited, so the birds should begin to share incubation duties. Look for such exchanges. They can be fun to watch, as sometimes the incubating bird appears reluctant to give up the job and there may even be what looks like a squabble. It's more likely just an eagle body language \"conversation.\" We stopped by just before the rains came yesterday morning about 8:30 and did confirm that incubation is continuing. Look carefully to see a bit of white head and yellow beak visible through the nest materials just left of the main trunk. There were other interesting things to watch. A pair of immature White Ibises roosted on the power distribution pole just west of the nest. Notice the protective insulation that FPL installed to minimize the electrocution risk to raptors and other large birds. An adult White Ibis roosted on one of the Melaleuca snags to the west of the nest. A Red-shouldered Hawk shared another dead trunk. Photographic conditions were bad, so my shots of a Belted Kingfisher and over-flying Wood Storks were not at all satisfactory.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-3-Incubation-underway-td7572846.html","images":4},{"id":"4445558","topic":"4445558","order":1,"title":"Nestwatch - Saturday, 1-23-10, 8am to 9am","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2010-01-23T09:55:22.682000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"I arrived at 8am from the west. It was still sitting there and stayed on the nest for the next 40 minutes or so, until we departed. No other adult was seen. We were looking for signs of behavior change, but if there were any changes, they were subtle. To us, the bird appeared a bit higher in the nest-- we could see all of its white head much of the time, along with some of its back, even when it was facing left, when it usually appears more obscured by the height of the nest rim. It was definitely more active-- yesterday morning it barely moved except when it got up and briefly flapped its wings. Now it often looked down under its body. It changed position only once. For 5 minutes or so it sat very low, facing to the right, with only the top of its head visible. It also was possibly bothered by flies, as it shook its head several times. All in all, we thought this was a change in behavior since yesterday morning, but we do not know its significance. Because of the frequency of looking under its body, this may be an indicator that the egg is hatching or has hatched, but there is no way to know for sure. I could not tell if it brought nest materials with it, but it started moving large stick branches around at the top part of the nest. The eagle on the nest did not move. It was only there for about 2 minutes and then it flew off to the west. I could not see where it ended up. At about 1:25, it returned to the west rim of the nest. This time, the other eagle stood up and they had a little \"conversation.\" They looked down into the nest twice. They were together about 4 minutes and then the eagle that flew in flew away to the west but then circled around and went east. I lost sight of it because I was watching from my car and the trees in the median blocked my view. I got out of the car and went to the median, but I couldn't find it. The eagle flew to the nest again at about 1:50. The one on the nest did not stand up this time. It stayed for about 2 minutes and flew to the east where my view was blocked again. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida and a newly formed political committee want to bring bald eagles under their wings following an announcement in late May that charter high school proponents changed their preferred venue from the Marco YMCA to the property known as Tract K, where eagles reside. The Conservancy is urging the Marco Island City Council to approve a bald eagle protection ordinance. Meanwhile, citizens are banding together to try to get voters to decide the future of Tract K on Nov. 2. If all else fails, they will buy the land and protect it without government help, residents said. State and federal protection weakened when the bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2008. “It’s still a fragile population. We want to ensure it doesn’t become imperiled again,” said Amber Crooks of the Conservancy. Marco has two active nests, one of which is on Tract K, city environmental specialist Nancy Richie said. Statewide, that might not be of much concern, Crooks said, but on Marco, if you lose one, that’s a big difference. The proposed school could bring 300 to 600 students to Tract K, estimated Jane Watt, president of the Marco Island Discovery Center. School activity likely would cause the eagles to abandon their nests, Crooks said. Gerald Swiacki and Carl Way, as well as other Marco residents, created a political committee and separate foundation, Marco Eagle Sanctuary, to put the fate of the vacant 11.6-acre Tract K in the hands of voters. They’ll have to scramble to get it on the ballot by the Aug. 24 deadline, however. Tract K was deeded to the Collier County School District by the island developers, Deltona Corp., at a cost of $10. Many Marco residents and city leaders believe that the developers intended to set the land aside for a school. There are no deed restrictions, however. The land is too small and of little use to the district, Collier schools Superintendent Dennis Thompson said. Watt requested the land at no cost. “I can tell you that will not happen,” Thompson said. When Crooks and dozens of residents descended on a council meeting in July to plead for eagle protection, council members said they were in the wrong place. They should talk to the School Board, council members Jerry Gibson and Frank Recker said. “A school does involve the consideration of every council member,” Marco resident Frances Enman said. “Free speech belongs to all of us.” School Board member Pat Carroll, who once opposed selling Tract K, said at a recent candidates’ forum that it belongs under city ownership. Regardless of who owns it, Crooks said council has a right and responsibility to protect the eagles. Citing Bonita Springs and Lee County bald eagle protection ordinances, Crooks said an ordinance gives the city a say over project design and mitigation. “Local governments have a nexus now to review these projects,” she said. If the Collier School Board approves the charter application this fall, the planning board and council will review any residential zoning change. State laws prohibit construction or disturbance within 330 feet of a bald eagle’s nest. Initially, Ulgonda Kirkpatrick, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s bald eagle coordinator, maintained that regulations would prevent the school from building near Marco’s nest for five consecutive seasons. However, in an e-mail to the Daily News on Wednesday, Kirkpatrick said an eagle disturbance permit could allow building the school closer if mitigation and other conditions are met. “Each application is reviewed on an individual basis,” she said. That concerns Crooks and others. Watt has said the charter school leaders would protect the eagles to enhance the school’s eco-friendly curriculum. Cheryl Brownstein, who lives near Tract K, is among those calling for protection of the land by creating a passive park without play areas. “It would be a place for quiet reflection or meditation,” Brownstein said. Portions would be closed during nesting season, proponents said. The political committee is seeking approval from voters for the city to purchase the property for up to $3.5 million and create the sanctuary. They will be hard-pressed to meet the city’s criteria, City Clerk Laura Litzan said. The city must hold two advertised hearings of the ordinance, but currently there is only one Aug. 16 council meeting scheduled. There are 1,500 signatures needed on the petition that the city has yet to approve, and an Aug. 24 deadline with the Collier County Supervisor of Elections for submittal. Way is concerned whether the city staff is stalling. Alan Gabriel, the attorney from the Weiss-Serota law firm representing the city, denied the petition because it lacked an affidavit signed by five committee members and had imprecise ordinance language. Aware of ongoing negotiations between the city and the superintendent for the city to purchase Tract K, including the proposal for a two-year, first-option-to-buy agreement, Way has other concerns. “They better not purchase this just to hand it over to the school in a back-room deal,” he said. If voters don’t get their say, Way said the foundation will seek donations from around the world to purchase Tract K. He said he would support an appropriately sized high school, but the current proposal is grandiose for Marco’s and Collier’s needs.
