From what we could see, all 3 looked ok. The apparent oldest chick hogged the left edge of the nest most of the time. The middle chick finally got that spot for a short time, while the older one seemed to yell at him to move. An adult quickly dropped something at around 12:15 and the one on the far right seemed to do the most eating. As Al pointed out, there don't seem to be the feeding frenzies of last year. Maybe there's an abundance left in the nest? The older one did get back to the favored far left, doing so by helicoptering over the middle one. Went up a couple jumps on that big, thick angled branch on the left. The parent hung out on the favored tree to the left of the nest, then left quietly when I wasn't looking.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sat-4-10-10-td4883522.html","images":0},{"id":"7575299","topic":"7575299","order":1,"title":"APR 17: Both eaglets and Pride at nest at 11:24 AM","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2019-04-18T12:31:53.870000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2018–2019","text":"Phil reports -- Hi Ken, I was at the nest this morning at 09:15 and there was no activity. The babies were up and bouncing in the nest, 1 adult in the dead trees and the other on the favorite perch in the tall pine left of the nest. After about 10 minutes the babies settled down and the adults status quo. There were a lot of work trucks and activity in the area. I asked what was going on and they said installing poles. At times it was noisy, loud clanking mainly, but only occasionally. The eagle in the pine was interested and looking toward the noise...work was down by the traffic light to the east and down to the west past the dead trees. The workmen were asking when the eagles would leave...as I think they fear for their jobs with less work to do. The babies at times were loud in the nest....their \"voices\" are \"less baby\" and a little more like the adults. I don't know if this was related to the work going on. At one time the adults were calling back and forth to each other as they perched in their 2 spots, the tall pine left and the dead trees right. I was only to stay until 11am but of course things got active as I was leaving. The babies were moving again, the larger one REALLY \"flying\" up higher over the nest than I have seen. The other watchers and I decided it looked like at least 2 feet above the rim. The adults were coming and going and often soared high over the entire area mingling with the vultures at times. Finally at noon 1 adult came to the nest, parallel to the highway from the west, with a fish. It stayed briefly on the nest to help tear and then flew back to the same pine tree. I left with the babies sitting up in the nest and the eagle from the dead trees absent again. There were no watchers present.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Busy-Tuesday-morning-td2528440.html","images":0},{"id":"2528831","topic":"2528440","order":2,"title":"Re: Busy Tuesday morning...","author":"lisa baumbach reardon","date":"2009-03-24T16:20:15.170000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Very glad that yousaw both babies active-I was quite worried the way the one was acting late yesterday afternoon- maybe it was just tired ! The two permits are designed to protect public safety and manage activities or projects that may disturb or otherwise incidentally “take” bald or golden eagles or their nests, while maintaining stable or increasing populations. Permits will only be granted when they are compatible with this goal. When the bald eagle was listed under the Endangered Species Act, a permit was available to take eagles incidental to an otherwise lawful activity. But when the eagle was removed from Endangered Species Act protection in 2007, there were no provisions for issuing permits under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act for activities that could disturb or otherwise incidentally take either species of eagle. The growing population of bald eagles, in particular, could significantly curtail legal human activities if such permits were not available. “Both bald and golden eagle populations will benefit from these new permits,” said Sam Hamilton, Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “These two new permits will be based on sound science, help us improve our understanding of the species and ultimately our ability to successfully manage eagle populations. In addition, the new permits provide strong safeguards to ensure that permitted activities are consistent with the preservation of bald and golden eagles.” The first new permit type may be issued only where the “take” – in this case referring to the disturbing, or harming of eagles – is associated with, but not the purpose of an activity, such as commercial or residential real estate development. The second new type of permit governs removal of bald or golden eagle nests under limited circumstances, including removal of nests that create safety concerns on or near airports. Deliberate killing of eagles will not be allowed under either of these new permits. “While the final rule establishing the new permit program covers the management of both bald eagles and golden eagles, the two species represent two very different management challenges,” said Paul Schmidt, the Service’s Assistant Director for Migratory Birds. “The bald eagle population has rebounded in the past decades, and its recovery poses the challenge of managing a healthy population still protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. But unlike the bald eagle, the golden eagle population is not expanding, and may be in decline.” Less scientific data is available to help understand the current population trend of the golden eagle. The final rule improves on prior management of golden eagles by providing a new framework to better identify data gaps and information needs pertaining to golden eagle populations – items of critical importance to the future management of golden eagles. Until the Service has further data to show that golden eagle populations can withstand additional take, it will only consider issuance of new golden eagle take permits for safety emergencies, through programmatic permits (designed to provide net benefits to eagles) and any other permits that will result in a reduction of ongoing take or a net take of zero. During the 90-day public comment period for the permit system, the Service received substantive input from 35 commenters – input used to help revise the permit program. The Service later received 58 additional comments from the subsequent 30-day public comment period on the revised permit program. As part of this action, the Service also released a Final Environmental Assessment (FEA) outlining the science and rationale for both of the new permit types. The rule will go into effect 60 days after its publication on September 11, 2009 in the Federal Register. The Final Rule and the FEA can be found online at: http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/ The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. You must first register and subscribe (if desired) and then request membership in the pop-up which should appear if you attempt to post. If you have problems, please contact: < [email withheld] > The procedure for posting photos provides two alternatives-- either post a photo from your computer or device or, if your photo is published on the Internet, you may post the address (URL) of your photo. In the latter case, be sure that the photo is JPG format. The address must end in \".jpg\" or it will not display. Be sure to \"resize\" the image, as the original may be larger than the size of the screen. Let the image \"float,\" which lets you decide where you might wish to place it if you are including text or captions. Post in the appropriate sub-forum. INSTRUCTIONS: = = = = = = The menu for posting photos is fairly straightforward: First, select the appropriate sub-FORUM in which to post your photo (e.g., a specific nest, a sighting away from a known nest, or others as listed). If you wish to have photos appear in your message, use the drop-down menu at the top of the \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" window. If you simply paste the link into the text, clicking on the link will direct the user to a single photo or separate web page. Select: \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" --> \"Insert Image\" --> choose either to upload from your computer or copy the image's address from the internet If you do choose the latter option, the display photo on many sites such as Facebook or Flicker etc may not be in JPG format, so you may need to click on it to view it in a separate window which may be JPG or provide options such as \"save image URL\" or format or size. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" Generally, the \"Large\" size option works fine, as it resizes the image to fit the screen. Also let the image \"float\" inside any text you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere in your message. IF you have multiple photos it is best to array them in a vertical stack rather than side by side, as they will otherwise spread across the screen horizontally and may not be as friendly when viewed on a phone screen, If you watermark your photos, please try to place the mark so that it does not detract from the subject of your photo.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/How-to-post-photos-on-a-sub-FORUM-td7575738.html","images":0},{"id":"7576425","topic":"7575738","order":2,"title":"Re: How to post photos on a sub-FORUM","author":"Patti","date":"2022-01-07T12:50:29.622000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/How-to-post-photos-on-a-sub-FORUM-td7575738.html","images":1},{"id":"2505776","topic":"2505776","order":1,"title":"Rainy Thursday afternoon","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-03-19T18:18:01.239000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"When I arrived about 2 pm only 1 eaglet was visible standing up on the right side of the nest. It spent a lot of time fluffing and preening as the rain kept coming in spurts and then the adults and young would spend the time between showers preening. When I returned to the nest from watching the adult both eaglets were up high, very active, exercising their wings and moving around the nest. It would have been a somewhat boring day of watching except for the activity of the larger eaglet right before I left. It moved by flapping its wings (but not going any higher than the top of the nest)way over to the extreme left. It was up on the very top of the nest rim, such that I could clearly see its very orange feet carefully wrapping around the sticks that make up the rim. Finally it seemed to be comfortable and as it held on to the sticks it leaned over such that its head was below its feet. It then seemed to be clearly looking down at the ground. Sometimes it would come back level and rearrange its feet on other sticks.....but WAY out on the edge and then repeat the same stare down at the ground, sometimes turning or cocking its head as it peered below. Phil, did you get any other views, particularly of tail pattern? As you observed, this bird's body shape looks male rather than female. Notice the difference in bill color and the amount of dark feathers on this eagle's head. There is a more distinct \"Osprey\" eye line* and the base of the bill is dark as opposed to the bright yellow bill expected in a 5th year (4 year old) Bald Eagle. Not sure, but the tail feathers give a darker appearance. This bird seems to have more white on its chest. It may actually be a 4th year bird rather than the early 5th year that we first saw. the bill color is rather distinctly different> ADDENDUM: I did not mean to say this is an Osprey-- the dark line through the eye is sometimes called the \"Osprey line\" because it bears some resemblance to the Osprey. First we will collect \"nominations\" of names from both this FORUM and your Facebook page (the link is in your post). Then we will hold an independent open poll so that participants all over the globe can vote on the final name, whether or not they are registered on Facebook or this FORUM or neither. Only one vote will be allowed per IP address. If no single name gets a plurality, we will need to have a second \"runoff\" to select among the 3-5 names that get the most votes in the first poll. We handled it this way for two years when middle school students set up a poll to name the eaglets those times. It worked very well and we got hundreds of votes from all over the country. Thanks! I have corrected some problems with the formatting of the message. Ken Location: The nest is located in Pembroke Pines, Florida in a tall Australian Pine Tree, about 150’-200’ south of Pines Blvd. between 208th and 209th Avenues. Parking: Parking is allowed on the shoulder and off the road of the westbound side of Pines Blvd. between 208th and 209th Avenues. Parking is not allowed on the south side of Pines Boulevard. Parking is prohibited on the shoulders of NW 209th and 208th Avenues (north of Pines Boulevard). Viewing Spot: One of the best viewing spots is on the north side of Pines Blvd. about 12’ to 15’ (4 to 5 paces) west of the School Zone sign (photo below) at the beginning of the westbound right turn lane heading toward the intersection of 209th Avenue. Finding the Nest: Looking south, preferably with binoculars, find the Nest Tree, which is a tall 3-stemmed Australian Pine Tree about 150’ back from the road, slightly to the left of the No Parking sign. The nest is in the crotch of the tree where the large stems of the tree meet. See The photo below. Another spotting aid is the yellow curly-cue on the third power line wire from the top. The curly-cues were installed by FPL to help the eagles see and avoid hitting the power lines. The nest can be seen just below and slightly to the left of the curly-cue. The nest is just above the top of a Melaleuca Tree that is in front of the Nest Tree. At times the top of the Melaleuca Tree sways in the wind and blocks the view of the Nest. Appearance of the Nest: The Nest is a large construction of horizontally aligned branches in the crotch of the tree. You may or may not see the adult eagles or the eaglet, but be patient. The eaglet often sticks its head up to look for its parents. Rarely does a half hour go by before at least one of the adult eagles comes to the nest, usually with prey to feed the baby. The presence of an adult makes sighting the nest much easier because of its large size, dark brown nearly black body, and its snow white head and tail. Keep Your Eyes Open: Watch out for the adult eagles flying to and from the nest and overhead. Sometimes an adult will perch in a branch above the nest or on a nearly tree. Also, the adults often perch on top of one of the dead Malaleuca Trees south[specific nest-location detail withheld]. These are large, majestic birds with a 7’ wingspan.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Finding-the-Pembroke-Pines-Eagle-Nest-td7366416.html","images":6},{"id":"2588497","topic":"2588497","order":1,"title":"Sun AM, 4/5 - Hope not home","author":"Kelly Smith","date":"2009-04-05T08:52:06.690000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I arrived at the nest site a few minutes after 7 and there were already several watchers in attendance. At various times, both adults and both chcks were visible for the people stopping by to see them. One adult would be in the dead trees and one in the nest or the favorite Austrialian Pine close to the road. Never, as far as I know, were both adults in the nest at the same time. Lots of feedings were seen by the people watching. Sorry, but I still can't figure out what the prey is, even using my new spotting scope. The chicks did some very brief wing exercises that everyone enoyed watching. In the afternoon, starting at about 1:30, an adult flew into the nest and stayed for close to two hours! The crowd was very happy, and there were quite a few people there at times. There were almost as many children watching as there were adults. At about 5:30, one of the chicks decided to do a real workout. He/she was hopping up and down and flapping like crazy. The legs looked so cute, like they had some wool stuck on them. There was only one frightening time when someone stopped their car in the middle of the road and another car coming from behind did not see it and had to slam on their brakes and swerve. There were many cars that stopped in the road, but we were able to convince them to pull over or move on. Monday morning, when I arrived at about 10:00, no humans were there watching. The chicks were not visible and one adult was in the favorite Austrialian Pine. Now and then, I could see a chick's wing go up, but the first time one was visible was at 10:40. At 11:15, an adult flew into the nest with food. One chick (I'm assuming the older one) was fed until 11:25 and then the other chick was fed. The adult flew away at 11:30. Both chicks then stood straight up and walked about the nest for about an hour, and then went down in the nest too low to see. Today, I noticed that the chicks in the nest and the adult when in the dead tree were what appeared to be panting. Unfortunately, I did not ever see two adults at the same time :-( I was alone there about half the time. People frequently have stopped on the road to ask what is going on, as they have seen many cars parked there so much lately. Today's question was funny. I guess the guy could see something dark in the tree and asked me, \"What are you looking at? A monkey is up there, right?\" I left at about 1:15. The photo, taken from an airplane above Picayune Strand near Naples, captures the trailing kitten mid-leap, as if euphorically kicking up her heels in delight. For those who have witnessed the shrinking of the panther’s historic range – now down to five percent of its original size – the snapshot is as sweet as January’s high-profile visit from Washington VIPs for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Strand. It’s proof positive that restoring this part of the Everglades is good for Florida’s iconic animal. Picayune Strand, a 55,000-acre chunk of the Everglades, was drained and partially developed decades ago to build a subdivision. The development failed, and over the years the state and federal governments spent $150 million to purchase the land lot by lot. State and federal biologists consider the Picayune Strand an essential piece of remaining panther habitat, connecting other public lands that include the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, Everglades National Park and Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. Since the early 1990s, when the Florida panther was on the brink of extinction, the population in the wild is still less than 100, according to the latest estimates from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service). In recent months, the Picayune Strand Restoration Project gained momentum with the start of a $53 million U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to build the first of three pump stations to deliver water back to the landscape. Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks Tom Strickland and the late Service Director Sam Hamilton attended the Jan. 6 groundbreaking ceremony. After three decades of working to protect Florida’s natural resources, including panther conservation, Service wildlife biologist Kim Dryden said “It’s truly exciting to take this step towards panther recovery.” In addition to rehydrating the wetlands, the Corps and the South Florida Water Management District are also removing 260 miles of roads. In the photo, taken by Panther Team Leader Darrell Land as part of a Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission monitoring program, Panther No. 170 and her kittens are walking on one of the roads where asphalt has been removed. As Janet Starnes, project manager for the Water District told her colleagues, the panther photo “makes us smile and want to go to work the next day to finish the project.” For more information about Florida panthers visit www.fws.gov/floridapanther/. As soon as I stopped the car a second white-head flew in and joined the first. They stayed together for only about 20 seconds and the younger bird flew off to the east and landed on the very top of the last and tallest roadside pine at the SW corner of Pines & SW 208th Avenue. She called a couple of times but I heard no response from Pride, who remained on the nest. The sun was almost directly behind the roosting bird, so my images are horrible, but some observations can be made. Body shape is robust, suggesting a female. Gape is deep, almost reaching the back of its eye, perhaps also supporting female. The sides and top of beak has some dark streaks towards ts base. There are a few white feathers on its breast. The head shots the residual \"Osprey line\" behind the eye and also the dark top of head that characterized the first female (\"Newfee\"). The under-tail coverts appear mostly white. the tail is dingy white with some dark streaks and the terminal 20% of the tail feathers are dark. This is also consistent with Newfee, though the tail appears overall darker than I remember. Only about 5 minutes after I had arrived, the female flew two wide circles above the tree in which she had been roosting, then disappeared westbound behind the trees, seeming to head for the nest. I did not see Pride fly off, but when I got back to the nest it was empty, and they were not roosting anywhere that I could determine. Putting it all together, I believe this bird is the original new female (\"Newfee\") but I will try to compare images to those of of the other younger visitor to the nest, particularly the tail and undertail as well as beak and face patterns.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-11-9-45-AM-Both-eagles-on-the-nest-td7573904.html","images":8},{"id":"7573909","topic":"7573904","order":2,"title":"Re: JAN 11, 9:45 AM Both eagles on the nest","author":"TierraLady","date":"2015-01-13T09:02:47.366000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Beautiful lady. The other participants had great ideas about finding additional resources to assist in establishing a more permanent refuge for the eagles. The Sarasota wildlife rehab center says it got notice that the oil could hit Florida's coast as early as Friday. Save Our Seabirds says it got a call from British Petroleum Wednesday morning to be on stand-by, and that the oil spill looks like it's on a path to hit the Florida panhandle. Five staff members and 54 volunteers say they are ready to move on a moment's notice. \"Oh, it's got to be done immediately; if we get there too late, it's just going to be over for the bird,\" says Eileen Devlin. \"Right now, we're still on pins and needles. We're mobilizing in Wimauma trying to get everything ready. We don't know what to expect when we get there,\" says wildlife rehabilitator Nancy Alexander. They're prepared for the worst. Previous experience with oil spills has the staff ready to mobilize a difficult rescue mission. \"We have to do each feather and try to get it down to the down feather, so we actually have to really soak them up,\" says Alexander. And that requires putting each bird through a series of baths. \"A suds, a rinse, a suds, a rinse, and a suds and a rinse.\" For birds like pelicans, cormorants, and sea gulls, oil on their skin can cause hypothermia; and ingested oil is poisonous. \"If they ingest any oil, they have to be treated with charcoal...makes them vomit.\" Staff and volunteers are packing Wednesday night to leave at a moment's notice. But they say supplies are still needed. \"Whether it's clipboards, sheets and towels, rubber gloves…Dawn dishwashing liquid.\" And with the right supplies at the right timing, Save Our Seabirds promises to live up to its name. Devlin says Save Our Seabirds has an 85% success rate with rescuing birds from oil spills. PG-13 (S, L but no V or N) I arrived at the nest at about 9:00 AM this morning and found Luis there. He had already been watching for two hours, during which time he saw both adults repeatedly bringing in sticks and working on the nest. But I found the nest empty! Hurrah-- the male (Pride) returned within a few minutes (at 9:04 AM): He seemed to be anxious and kept looking around:. Then, at 9:10 AM, he suddenly flew right out over us into the north breeze, which was at our backs. No time to adjust the camera settings and I got a badly cropped poor exposure. I include this because it does show a distinctive plumage marker. Pride has a dark feather at the right outer edge of his tail: Pride flew to the east to roost in the lone pine at the SW corner of Pines & 208th Avenue. Immediately we heard contact calls of the two eagles. Luis ran there and I ambled along behind. He said they had attempted copulation at the nest and he thought they might be trying again, but by the time we got to see them they were quietly roosting together. The female (Jewel) is on the left-- note her larger size and almost rectangular shape versus the tapered body of Pride. Her hind toe (hallux) is longer and it reaches partly around the branch: They roosted quietly until 9:35:08 AM, when Pride started calling, gradually opening his wings ever wider: Jewel pointed her beak skyward and joined in the song: The duet continued for only 10 seconds, when Jewel crouched down, signaling her readiness to mate: Copulation lasted only 13 seconds. This entire performance took place in 26 seconds! The pair roosted after mating (9:35:34 AM): ADDENDUM: Later in the day, Grisell V saw them copulating at about 12:30 PM and took photos.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/NOV-17-Whirlwind-courtship-and-consummation-td7575120.html","images":15},{"id":"7575121","topic":"7575120","order":2,"title":"Re: NOV 17: Whirlwind courtship and consummation","author":"Sally","date":"2018-11-18T17:13:23.598000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2018–2019","text":"Excellent news Ken. I stopped and asked them if the Eagles were back and the FPL woman said it would be some time before they would come back. Does anyone know anything about why FPL would be there?","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FPL-at-eagle-nest-site-td3645844.html","images":0},{"id":"3649225","topic":"3645844","order":2,"title":"Re: FPL at eagle nest site","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-09-15T09:58:54.937000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"There's a report back in the forum about FPLs involvement with the nest woods. We have been talking to them about tree trimming, wire protection and other dangers for the eagles. They have been great about working to make it safer for the eagles and notifying us if any actual work is to occur. Thanks for looking out for our special eagles! (There is routine maintenance and trimming that happens in 3 yr cycles so that may be what she was recording.)","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FPL-at-eagle-nest-site-td3645844.html","images":0},{"id":"3651056","topic":"3645844","order":3,"title":"Re: FPL at eagle nest site","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-09-15T14:51:19.859000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"As Trisha also mentioned in her report, FPL is planning to make additional changes to some of the poles, to better protect the eagles. A concern is that, as the dead melaleucas fall down, there will be fewer roosting places and the eagles may begin using the power poles. Trisha's report may be viewed at this link . As she points out, tree trimming is carried out on a three year cycle, with the next round planned for May, 2011-- perhaps a bit too early, if the eagles are still nesting then. FPL is aware that they should carry out the pruning after the nesting season.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FPL-at-eagle-nest-site-td3645844.html","images":0}]
