Yes, these tend to stay in the area or move south along the river system depending upon the severity of the winter. A very timely question, as I had been planning to write a blog on this subject. Bald Eagles have complicated migration habits, differing by age of the birds, geographic location and the effects of weather and climate. Their dependence upon fish as a dietary staple figures in on their seasonal movements, as open water is essential and cooler water more desirable, especially for younger birds as it causes the fish to move nearer the surface, making them easier to catch. Adults seem to want to stay around and defend their territory during the non-breeding season while young birds travel more widely. Northernmost Bald Eagles such as those in northern Canada typically fly south during the winter, with juveniles and immature birds leading the exodus. They congregate in coastal areas or large rivers and lakes that are not iced over. In the Northwest, the timing of the salmon run influences post-breeding movement, as many move northward and northwest in late summer, join Alaskan birds following the spawning salmon southward along the coast, then linger through the relatively mild winters along the Pacific coast. Bald Eagles from the North Central states such as those at our local nest in NE Illinois will wander locally as conditions permit. When winter sets in, eagles from the north join them, especially at dams and locks along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. While Illinois has only about 30-40 breeding pairs of Bald Eagles, the state's winter population is commonly over 3000 individuals from December through March. In the Northeast US, Bald Eagles fly south in fall (August through December) along the Appalachian mountains or follow the Atlantic coast. Many congregate in Chesapeake Bay, and are joined by migrants, mostly immature birds from more southerly locations. Some Florida immature eagles have been tracked as far north as New England, returning to Florida in October-December. Adult Bald Eagles in south Florida tend to wander in the vicinity of the nesting territory during the non-breeding season (July through September). Generally, Bald Eagles that nest in the lower 1/3 of the US (below 40 degrees latitude) are said to have less north-south migratory movement.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagles-near-my-second-home-in-Illinois-td7573630.html","images":0},{"id":"7572912","topic":"7572912","order":1,"title":"Osprey Nest At Pembroke Shores Baseball Park","author":"Square Grouper","date":"2013-01-16T11:55:49.923000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Hello, not sure if any of you can help on this. My son played baseball several times at the Pembroke Shores baseball complex on SW 172nd Avenue just south of Pines. He is now older and doesn't play there any more, so I haven't been there in a couple of years. I am not sure if any of you on here were aware, but thre was, at least teh last tiem I was there, an osprey nest on top of one of the light poles next to the field in the far corner at the south end of the park, closest to the lake--makes sense since the ospreys were close to the water. The pole was on the third base side of the field close to home plate. I remember one time there was part of a fish on the ground below the nest and some of the little siblings of the kids on the team thought it was cool. My question is has anyone on here been there recently, and is the nest still there? I may try to swing by sometime soon and see, but its not on my way to anywhere in my current travels and I'm not sure when I would be able to get by. It was neat to see/hear the chicks calling out, parents bringing food, etc. Thanks for any help that can be provided.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Osprey-Nest-At-Pembroke-Shores-Baseball-Park-td7572912.html","images":0},{"id":"7572939","topic":"7572912","order":2,"title":"Re: Osprey Nest At Pembroke Shores Baseball Park","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-01-23T12:27:15.689000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I am in Illinois right now but will try to get out and look for the nest when I get back.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Osprey-Nest-At-Pembroke-Shores-Baseball-Park-td7572912.html","images":0},{"id":"7574578","topic":"7574578","order":1,"title":"Eagles sighted 9/15/2016","author":"Maria Rosa Drake","date":"2016-09-15T08:16:28.431000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"As I was driving West on Pines Blvd at 6:56am, I saw two adult bald eagles fly from the malaleuca trees West of the nest to Pines Blvd and headed East.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagles-sighted-9-15-2016-td7574578.html","images":0},{"id":"7574579","topic":"7574578","order":2,"title":"Re: Eagles sighted 9/15/2016","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2016-09-15T14:57:27.838000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"Thanks, Maria-Rosa, I watched for the eagles out in west Miramar this morning from a good vantage point on the Harbour Lakes mitigation wetlands. The last feeding around 11am, I watched with the binoculars and saw that it was bringing 1 med size fish for the meal. Several times the juveniles flew by the perched adult seemingly begging for more food. I was photographing the adult in the tree so I don't know if the eating was amicable. Within a few seconds he saw it seem to be arranging the nest but then turned 180 degrees and once again settled so deep that he or she could not even be seen. Mary Lou and I visited the nest at about 1:40 and observed for a half hour. All that time the female was roosting to the right of the nest and we never saw a second one. Either the male was incubating deep or had flown off before we got there. The left rim of the nest is high and the nest goes back on that side of the tree trunk. This happened with Jewel's second brood last year. She rarely was visible and we were never sure she was incubating until the first eaglet appeared. Try to watch for at least 30 minutes if the nest appears empty, as an incubating adult will periodically stand up, even briefly, to arrange the eggs and change position in the nest.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-27-Is-incubation-undeway-td7574638.html","images":1},{"id":"7575327","topic":"7575327","order":1,"title":"August 15, 16, 17 and 25: Adult eagles over west Miramar","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2019-08-26T14:58:16.507000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Adults continue to be seen over western Miramar, about 1.5 miles to SE of the nest, usually just around sunrise. Both seemed to anticipate the arrival of a meal. At about 9:45 AM both adults suddenly flew to the nest tree. The male (Pride) landed in the nest and both eaglets nearly attacked as if they expected a prey drop. Then the adults both flew away but soon returned. The female (Jewel) roosted on the branch as Pride attempted to drop the prey item. The exchange was chaotic. Both eaglets attacked fiercely, driving Pride back. The older eaglet then crouched down over the prey and spread her wings to guard it while the younger eaglet settled down behind her. LOWELL WASHBURN/Iowa Department of Natural Resources The season’s first big chill has arrived. Northern lakes are succumbing to winter’s icy grip, and thousands of bald eagles are currently staging a mass exodus from summer nesting areas. The southward migration has reached Iowa, and area birding enthusiasts are presented with unique, firsthand opportunities to view large numbers of our magnificent national emblem. As continental breeding populations continue to soar, Iowa’s annual bald eagle invasion has become an increasingly spectacular event. So much so that viewing along major flight paths, say biologists, is as good as it gets anywhere in the Lower 48. And as winter concentrations grow, the eagles never fail to draw an eager crowd of human onlookers. “We now have a tremendous number of nesting bald eagles to the north of Iowa which sets the stage for truly incredible viewing opportunities as those birds move south,” said DNR Wildlife Diversity (Nongame Programs) Coordinator Doug Harr. “Around 1,300 nesting pairs of eagles were reported in Minnesota this summer, and Canada has even more,” said Harr. “As harsh weather forces birds south, Iowa becomes a winter destination as eagles collect around open fishing waters.” “The annual flight is occurring now and viewing opportunities along places like the Des Moines River or below dams on the Mississippi can be truly amazing. I talked to one birder who told me she drove all the way from New Jersey to Iowa to view our wintering bald eagles. Opportunities like this just don’t exist in New Jersey and the trip was well worth the effort, she said. Comments like that put things into perspective,” said Harr. But not all migrating eagles are necessarily in search of good fishing. Many are dogging the tail end of the waterfowl migration in hopes of picking off sick, injured or careless ducks and geese. As waterfowl concentrate into the last remaining pockets of open water, marauding eagles cruise airhole perimeters in hopes of discovering an easy target. If the tactic fails, the giant raptors become more aggressive. At Cerro Gordo County’s Clear Lake, for example, an adult bald eagle launched a sudden surprise attack and plucked an adult goldeneye duck from the midst of a flock snoozing on the ice near Dodge’s Point. In Mason City, another adult eagle isolated and then killed an apparently healthy Canada goose from a flock containing more than 400 honkers at rest on a frozen impoundment. The eagle then took time to carefully pluck its 10-pound lunch within 40 yards of a downtown apartment complex and nearby public hiking trail. Joggers literally ran through a windrow of drifting goose feathers as they wafted across the trail. Talk about urban viewing opportunities. I’m sayin’ that it just doesn’t get any better than that. “As fast as the big waters are currently freezing to our north, I’d expect to see a huge influx of bald eagles move into Iowa during the next few days,” said Harr. “Most of these birds are coming straight down the chute from Minnesota and Canada, and viewing opportunities are occurring statewide. I think we’ll continue to see some pretty good stacking up of eagles during the next two weeks.” Lowell Washburn is with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Article-Iowa-Eagle-Invasion-td4159250.html","images":1},{"id":"4951327","topic":"4951327","order":1,"title":"Empty Nest April 23 ,2010","author":"Al","date":"2010-04-23T12:07:15.321000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"When I arrived, Ed was there with his camera, and he reported two eaglets. Nationwide, bald and golden eagles are continually exposed to the toxic heavy metal, according to research that tested more than 1,200 eagles from Alaska to Florida. The study, which was published Thursday in the journal Science, evaluated eagles in 38 states, testing their bones, feathers, livers and blood for lead. Researchers found that 46 percent of bald eagles and 47 percent of golden eagles had chronic lead poisoning. “When you look at lead levels in bone, these birds are getting exposed repeatedly to lead over their lives,” said Todd Katzner, a supervisory research wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and the study’s principal investigator. “It’s happening again and again.” The effects of lead, which scientists believe eagles consume as they scavenge the remains of animals shot with lead ammunition that fragments within their bodies, can be deadly for all birds, including eagles. .. They flew in front of the nest and both settled briefly on the dead roost tree along the road to the east. Then both flew up and circles the nest tree. Pride flew towards the melaleuca snags to the west and the female flew to the SE, perhaps to roost deeper in the \"eagle forest.\" nearer to SW 208th Avenue. This photo was taken at 6:00 PM. Pride was once again deep in the nest on January 8th: This morning (January 10) I watched the nest from 9:00 AM until 10:15 AM and once again found an adult which this time I think is the female (Jewel) sitting quietly, facing away from me (to the south) the entire time. She was deep in the nest but in my first views her wings were spread and it is possible that she is \"tenting\" to provide space for a hatching or newly hatched eaglet while continuing to cover any unhatched egg(s). However, she never stood up or appeared to be tending or feeding a chick. It was quite cold (by south Florida standards), about 50 degrees warming into the low 50s with a steady northerly breeze. The adult would take care to protect the eggs and/or eaglets from the chill. Her white tail is next to the trunk and a bit of her back is visible, at 9:11 AM: She looked back over her shoulder a few times but I never got to see her entire head or back. Her rounded head shape with deep forehead appears characteristic of this female (this was my best view of her head, at 9:54 AM): At about 10:00 AM she shifted postion a bit and raised her tail. Her wing tips were together against the tail. She looks to be a little higher. Tenting? (10:04 AM): If our calculations are correct, she laid her first egg about December 5 or 6th and thus it would be expected to hatch in about 35 days, which would be January 9 or 10 if our observations were correct. Also a good question about the eaglet's gender-- The supposition that \"P Piney 19\" is a female eaglet is based upon the probability (3:1 or even as high as 9 out of 10) that it was the first-hatched of the brood. If, as we believe, there was a second eaglet which subsequently disappeared it could have been another female, as two females can be very aggressive towards one another. If she had been the second-hatched, then the first may well have been a male which would be at a great disadvantage because the female quickly outgrows and out-competes him. We cannot be certain but ground observations pretty well pinpointed the laying of the first egg and the hatching date, which was 34 days later. On average, Bald Eagle eggs take 35 days to hatch. See this article: \"By examining the effects of sex, growth, and hatching asynchrony on the relative size of sibling bald eagles, I show that the probability of brood reduction is not equal among broods of different sex composition. The hatching sequence of male first and female second was predicted to have the greatest chance of experiencing nestling mortality. This type of brood is rare in bald eagles because there is a sex-dependent hatching sequence whereby the first egg in mixed-sex clutches is predominantly female (93%)\" Influence of Sibling Competition on Nestling Sex Ratios of Sexually Dimorphic Birds https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/284498","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sat-March-17-2018-Eaglet-moving-in-the-nest-no-parents-td7574892.html","images":0},{"id":"7574895","topic":"7574892","order":3,"title":"Re: Sat., March 17, 2018 - Eaglet moving in the nest; no parents.","author":"tczig","date":"2018-03-19T09:17:56.482000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"Ken, thank you for your detailed response; I appreciate it. They saw both the male and female there eating. One was on the side of the nest shredding its meal and then the other flew in with a fish. As the one came in, the other flew to the Australian Pine tree where we saw them on the January walk with you. Is it common for them to continue to visit the nest even if the babies have died? We visited the nest this afternoon from about 1:40 to 2:30 PM. It looks like a branch fell on the nest today from the storm that came through this morning. I don't think they liked it, as they were trying to tear away some of its branches. The limb itself looks like it is too big and awkward for them to move in one piece. We saw both eagles - one was at the nest and then started calling - the other one flew nearby with a fish and the one on the nest went out to meet him/her - they both flew around for a minute and then landed, one on the nest and the other on a branch higher up in that tree. Pretty neat! Will FWC continue to protect the nest once they leave for the season? Just curious. If that branch stays there and they don't like it, might they move to a different location (building a new nest)? My reply: Last year they stayed around the nest until the end of May despite not even breeding. They have a strong bond with the nesting territory. If a nest is destroyed they usually will try to build another nest in the same territory. Sometimes they may build two or more nests and use them as alternative breeding sites. Even if they abandon the nest the FWC rules require the nest tree to be protected for an additional three years, as they have sometimes been known to return within that time frame. The adults have been seen there occasionally in mid-summer. Thanks for giving me permission to post your interesting observations. We were there earlier around noon and only saw one adult deep in the nest behind the newly felled branch.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FEB-16-Both-adults-on-nest-1-40-PM-td7574412.html","images":0},{"id":"7574413","topic":"7574412","order":2,"title":"Re: FEB 16: Both adults on nest 1:40 PM","author":"Lisa G","date":"2016-02-16T21:57:37.239000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"I don't think they would abandoned the nest due to a Branch . Morning clouds carry a promise of even more rain: As related in this earlier post, Bald Eagles trying for a family again , our local Bald Eagles failed to breed last season during the winter of 2014-2015. The new female of the pair was young and inexperienced and never seemed to exhibit a brooding instinct. Bald Eagles usually breed only once in a season, as the rearing and training of an eaglet takes about 4 to 5 months after the egg is laid until it gains independence. Second broods occasionally occur if a nest or eggs are destroyed early during incubation, and rarely after the loss of eaglets. However, this year, because of unusually severe weather during January and February, 2016, several pairs of Florida's eagles have produced second broods . Our local pair hatched out at least one eaglet but it was probably injured and lost by January 20. This season, Jewel, the female of the pair, laid her first egg on or about December 13, 2015. This egg was expected to hatch in 5 weeks, around January 17. Unfortunately, several severe thunderstorms with winds up to 80 MPH roared through in January, depositing broken branches over the right half of the nest. Since the nest tree is a very limber Australian Pine, the wind surely whipped it about severely. This photo shows d amage to nest on the afternoon after the January 17 storm. Adults kept sitting on the nest and tried to move the fallen branches: On January 19 there was clear photographic evidence that at least one eaglet had survived the storm and was being fed by Pride, but this was the last sign of life in the nest: Presumably the newly hatched eaglet sustained injuries which proved fatal, and any other eaglets or eggs were lost. The pair of eagles never abandoned the nest area and the male spent much time sitting in it after the loss of the brood. Then, on January 29 I saw Pride attempting to mate with Jewel: In mid-February the eagle watchers reported that an adult was persistently sitting deep in the nest, suggesting the possibility that a second clutch of eggs had been deposited. Then, on February 16, another swarm of severe storms swept through, depositing a second and much larger branch on the left side of the nest. Look closely at this photo and see that an adult continued to sit deep despite the new damage: The eagles stayed on the nest and we feared that the male may have been sitting on one or more infertile eggs, but then both of the pair appeared to be incubating and our hopes were renewed. On March 16 both eagles were seen peering into the nest. They often do this when the first eaglet hatches. On March 17 we received photographic evidence of at least one eaglet in the nest. I took this photo of them feeding a new offspring on March 24th: There were actually TWO eaglets seen in the nest by April 2. One eaglet was more active and aggressive: The other was smaller and had more natal down: The older of the two appeared to be about 2 1/2 weeks old, suggesting it may have hatched on or about March 16. This meant that incubation of the second clutch of eggs began 5 weeks previously, around February 10, just before the second storm blew the other branch down over the nest. They have survived so far despite the adversity. Here they were on April 7: Pride was guarding the nest and flew down to check on the eaglets: As we watched the nest, a family of Raccoons decided to cross the busy highway. We held our breath but they seemed wise enough to wait for a gap in the stream of vehicles: One youngster (almost fully grown) was reluctant and lingrered behind: After a couple of false starts, it scooted across safely, just ahead of the traffic: As I was ready to publish this, I had to add the big \"BUT\" to the title... I posted this photo in my Bald Eagle Nest Watch FORUM on April 10, showing the older of the two eaglets. I was concerned because its aggressive behavior towards its nest-mate was quite obvious. I assumed that the younger chick was hiding but asked others to look for it and keep tabs on its welfare: My concerns were justified the very next day, when one of the watchers actually saw and photographed the eaglet being attacked and killed by its sibling. Here is a link to her report of the horrific event. Scroll down to Kathy's post: One eaglet seen in nest -- other has been killed In the event that you cannot bear watching this, here was my response: !t is very sad to learn that the older and more aggressive eaglet killed the younger one. I feared it was being cowed into laying low or even already injured by the older one when I posted my message. Siblicide is one of the eagles' keys to success, as it gives the surviving eaglet a much better chance of becoming an adult. As you may know, the first eaglet is more likely to be a female than a male, and she is larger than the male at all ages. The second is more likely a male, so there is a 1:1 sex balance. The first-hatched, if a female, is more likely to kill a second female, perhaps because it eliminates a competitor while she is still small and weak. A female and male sequence is the most successful combination for survival, maybe because the male learns his place in the hierarchy and does not challenge the female. This also assures a balance between the number of males and females as adults. If the first-hatched is a male the entire brood has less chance of surviving than if the first is a female. Since south Florida eagles developed an instinct to breed much earlier than those up north, there were inherent advantages-- less heat stress on the eaglets and better prey availability when they are growing fastest in February and March. Let's hope that Pride and Jewel can provide for the single eaglet and see her fledge successfully sometime in late summer. She wrote on the \"Next Door\" app, on May 25: There was a baby and both parents in the back yard in the a.m., watched the babe try to eat a peacock bass it caught. It became almost comedic as he could not fly away with it, it may have been too big? Now there are turkey vultures around our part of the lake/shore because there are 4 dead fish on the shoreline. On Sunday, Phil Martin got some nice photos, which remain the property of Philip Martin and are used with his permission. He writes (May 27): Hi Ken, I was at the nest this morning at 11:00 and did not see any activity. Yesterday I was at the nest at approximately 4:30 and both Eaglets were in the area of the nest, perching on various trees, ending up with the female on the nest and the male below and to the east of the nest. In the past few weeks, I have observed the Eaglets in the nest area at various times. Occasionally seeing Pride bring food for them to the nest. I have not seen the Adult Female in approximately one month. Oh the joys of motherhood! -- her plumage is soiled with fecal matter: The middle chick flapped quite a bit: This seemed to annoy the oldest chick, who popped up and bit him on the wrist: Then, the male came in with unknown prey and spent a lot of time feeding the chicks: The male flew over to the melaleucas and joined the female: In the meantime, Frank Ortis, Mayor of Pembroke Pines, showed up with a reporter and photographer from the Sun-Sentinel. Deer: Camera Trap Shows Golden Eagle Capturing Sika Deer Sep. 23, 2013 — A camera trap set out for endangered Siberian (Amur) tigers in the Russian Far East photographed something far more rare: a golden eagle capturing a young sika deer. The three images only cover a two-second period, but show an adult golden eagle clinging to the deer's back. Its carcass was found two weeks later, just a few yards from the camera, initially puzzling researchers. The paper and images appear in the September issue of the Journal of Raptor Research. Authors include Linda Kerley of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Jonathan Slaght of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). \"I saw the deer carcass first as I approached the trap on a routine check to switch out memory cards and change batteries, but something felt wrong about it. There were no large carnivore tracks in the snow, and it looked like the deer had been running and then just stopped and died.\" said lead author Dr. Linda Kerley of ZSL, who runs the camera trap project. \"It was only after we got back to camp that I checked the images from the camera and pieced everything together. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.\" For full story visit: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/09/130923114120.htm","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Golden-Eagle-takes-down-a-young-deer-td7573103.html","images":0},{"id":"3065342","topic":"3065342","order":1,"title":"No eagles Thursday afternoon 6-11","author":"Jill W","date":"2009-06-11T20:38:06.283000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Not only were there no eagles, there weren't any vultures, Ibis, or any other birds around the area. Close inspection revealed that it had the \"soiled\" tail feathers and the missing or damaged 6th secondary feather on its left wing (counting from the body outward) which quite positively identifed it as Pride. Later, when I looked at the photos I also noticed that a string or monofilament line was trailing about one foot behind his tail. It may originate on his leg or foot. It may just be a harmless entangled plant fiber, but Ground observers should look closely to see whether some fishing line may be entangled on Pride's feet. You must first register and subscribe (if desired) and then request membership in the pop-up which should appear if you attempt to post. If you have problems, please contact: < [email withheld] > The procedure for posting photos provides two alternatives-- either post a photo from your computer or device or, if your photo is published on the Internet, you may post the address (URL) of your photo. In the latter case, be sure that the photo is JPG format. The address must end in \".jpg\" or it will not display. Be sure to \"resize\" the image, as the original may be larger than the size of the screen. Let the image \"float,\" which lets you decide where you might wish to place it if you are including text or captions. Post in the appropriate sub-forum. INSTRUCTIONS: = = = = = = The menu for posting photos is fairly straightforward: First, select the appropriate sub-FORUM in which to post your photo (e.g., a specific nest, a sighting away from a known nest, or others as listed). If you wish to have photos appear in your message, use the drop-down menu at the top of the \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" window. If you simply paste the link into the text, clicking on the link will direct the user to a single photo or separate web page. Select: \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" --> \"Insert Image\" --> choose either to upload from your computer or copy the image's address from the internet If you do choose the latter option, the display photo on many sites such as Facebook or Flicker etc may not be in JPG format, so you may need to click on it to view it in a separate window which may be JPG or provide options such as \"save image URL\" or format or size. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" Generally, the \"Large\" size option works fine, as it resizes the image to fit the screen. Also let the image \"float\" inside any text you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere in your message. IF you have multiple photos it is best to array them in a vertical stack rather than side by side, as they will otherwise spread across the screen horizontally and may not be as friendly when viewed on a phone screen, If you watermark your photos, please try to place the mark so that it does not detract from the subject of your photo.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/How-to-post-photos-on-a-sub-FORUM-td7575739.html","images":0}]
