I left to go to lunch after about 20 minutes. I returned about an hour later and saw only the top of a head in the nest for quite a while. The adult in the nest then stood up, turned around and relieved itself away from the nest. It then chewed on a couple of sticks and moved its behind back and forth on the nest (I guess to get the best position) before hunkering down again. At 2:40, I'm pretty sure I saw a changing of the incubating adults. One adult flew to the bare horizontal branch above and a little to the right of the nest. It called out as it landed on the branch. The incubating one then stood up. Then, I watched with my binocs as the one on the branch flew away a little to the south and then west. It made a circle and flew to the nest. I was not able to watch what happened with the one in the nest at the same time, but once I saw the one on the branch was on the nest, the other was gone. Off Topic----- My mother and I have been going to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center on Christmas day for a few years now. We went yesterday and I saw the cutest little Yellow-crowned Night Heron. According to the sign, this bird has been returning to the Center every September since his rehabilitation there 13 years ago.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/December-26-Afternoon-td4219147.html","images":2},{"id":"4219578","topic":"4219147","order":2,"title":"Re: December 26- Afternoon","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-12-26T22:41:59.528000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Interesting observation, Jill! I'm not sure how far off the nest they rose, if any at all. This morning it was all vertical with no travel from one side of the nest to the other. I thought that might be due to the lack of any real breeze, as the other time I watched this activity it was very windy. Another watcher had been there since 7:30 am and hadn't seen any adults at all. We stayed until around 10:30 when we gave up waiting for the parents. The babies were definitely up and looking. Hopefully the afternoon watchers will get to see a lot of feeding activity. The female was busy on the nest, doing all the usual activities, no sign of little heads. The male was preening and looking around on his perch. At 9:05am an Osprey pair entered the area above the nest, quite high. The male was clearly bothered by the intruders, loudly vocalizing very rapid, short call sounds. The Ospreys answered back and quickly left the area. The male kept looking up and all around for about 10 minutes and then I could tell he was readying to leave, which he did......flying somewhat through the trees, as you see. He circled the field one time and I thought he might land but headed north and flew out of sight. I felt it might be a food run so I waited until just before 10:00am, but he did not return. The birds put on several shows of flapping and jumping, with Hope being up most of the time. We did not see any branching. I keep countywide spreadsheets so we have good regional data to draw from if needed. If you are on this list in another county please feel free to use the form if it will help you out. You click on the link to the form here and it opens as a PDF with data fields into which you type information and check boxes. When you finish (it will accept either one or two sets of observations), save it, or just exit and it will ask you if you wish to save it. Select a folder in your computer (I made a special called \"Eagle Nest Observations\") and give it a unique file name-- it could be just the date (e.g., 20091111-9AM.pdf) and save it. You can then e-mail it to <a href=mailto:[email withheld]/\">Lynda White directly , or to the e-mail address at the top of the form, as an attachment, just as you might do with a photo). Try it out, using your observations from the last time you visited the nest, (or make a dummy report to mail to yourself as a test) and see how easy it really is. To save a step, I saved the blank form in the same folder on my computer. You can then work with it directly, but be sure that you change the file name when you go to save your report. The water level in Nelson Lake was very low and there were extensive mud flats. While I was observing the hundreds of Killdeers and a few peeps that were congregated along the edge of the water, I photographed them from the east observation deck. The total unobstructed view was about 110-120 degrees. This panoramic image, stitched from three separate overlapping photos, includes 108 birds that can fairly safely be counted as Killdeers. There are 9 other birds that look like sandpipers, and 5 blackbirds and starlings. (To better visualize the birds and perhaps provide a more accurate count, click on the photo and select the original size image.) I suddenly saw two adult Bald Eagles fly in and appear to be circling a small area near the middle of the remaining lake, about 1/4 mile away. As they were beyond the range of my 10x binoculars, I found it difficult to determine the exact prey that these two eagles were trying to catch. They seemed to be hunting cooperatively, taking swoops at what looked like a female Mallard accompanied by a smaller but longer-necked bird that looked like a Pied-billed Grebe. There appeared to be several ducklings in the water and in the grass that is now growing out of the shallow water. I captured this image just as one of the eagles hovered overhead the prey and the other flew in low from the right and appeared to be aiming for one of more of the ducklings. (Again, click on photo for enlarged images.) The \"attack\" eagle apparently missed its target. Either the duck or the eagle caused the splash that can be seen in this photo, taken less than one second later than the first. The eagles circled and a few seconds later attacked a second time. The photo reveals that there is a long-necked swimmer next to the adult duck-- I believe it may be a Pied-billed Grebe. Less than a half second later, the \"attack\" eagle closes in. It appears to be aiming for the ducklings (or baby grebes?) that are gathered at the edge of the grassy area to the right of the adults. Again, note that there are two (apparent) adult birds. The eagle lifts off-- I thought it missed the target again, as its talons appear to be empty. However, this photo, taken 32 seconds later, shows that the second of two cooperative attempts appeared to have been successful, as the first eagle departed with a small prey item-- a duckling? (I had to greatly sharpen the image to better demonstrate the eagle's talons holding the prey). Only eleven seconds later, the other eagle makes a pass for the ducklings and they are seen diving to safety. Here the fleeing adult looks more like a grebe than a duck. Finally, the second eagle circled and then departed the scene.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagle-Drama-in-Illinois-Blog-post-td7572794.html","images":10},{"id":"7573105","topic":"7573105","order":1,"title":"Female standing guard at nest this morning SEPT 29","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-09-29T21:25:01.196000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"A good sign that the eagles intend to re-occupy their nest this year-- the pair that Phil photographed last week and this morning the female roosting just above the rim of the nest. You cannot link directly to the URL for the Flickr image as it appears in your photostream, as this is NOT <.jpg> Follow these steps: Click on the desired photo, which provides a menu at top of photo Select \"All Sizes\" to display choices of several <.jpg> images Choose the Medium size Below the chosen image, there are two boxes with code-- choose the second box (2. Grab the photo's URL) Copy the entire URL that appears in the box and simply paste it into the \"Copy from Internet\" in the \"Insert Image\" link above the FORUM message box. Since I do not have access to the image sizing codes on your or other peoples' photostreams, I used a workaround to get the jpg files that I posted for you earlier. I simply right-clicked on the photo and chose \"copy image location\"-- this provided me with the URL for the jpg file. Alternatively, you can choose \"view image\" and this will open the image in a new window, and you can copy the url from the address field of the new page. This may produce an image that does not have as high resolution as is obtained by choosing the medium size as described above. Yesterday I saw an adult Bald Eagle cross overhead at the Turnpike/836 junction, (just south of the Dolphin Mall.) It crossed well in front of me heading west and I got a clear view of it, especially the brilliant white tail as it passed. I knew the area west of here was relatively undeveloped, so I looked at an aerial map when I got to work and noticed that the distance, \"as the crow flies\" (or in this case, \"as the eagle flies\") was close enough to believe it to be one of the Pines eagles. Of course, there is plenty of wooded Everglades west of here for plenty of eagles to exist, but maybe...... I grew up in Miami and in the early 80's there was a bald eagle which lived in a small wooded area on the land owned by Babtist Hospital on Kendall Drive. My father was a longtime employee there and devout woodsmen (airboats, swamp buggies, etc.) and he was in charge of maintaining the Hospital and grounds. He used to see the eagle almost daily and showed it to me several times when I came by to visit him at work. He described the location as way back in a tall Australian Pine on one of the lakes that are from a quarry, along the turnpike to the south, like you describe. Negative observations are just as important as sightings in establishing the departure dates of the birds, so also post here if you did NOT see the eagles during the past few days. May 27 was the 125th day after the first eaglet hatched, one day short of 18 weeks of age. Last season, Hope (the older of the two chicks) departed on the 126th day, and Justice, her young sibling, lingered 10 days longer, until the 135th day, which was June 1, 2009. We can expect that the youngsters are now wandering around South Florida, perhaps alone or with other juvenile eagles, or with a flock of vultures, or-- even with one of the adults, sharpening hunting skills or eating roadkill. Without satellite monitoring, we do not know if the eaglets may be heading up north to Chesapeake Bay, where we know some of those from Central and North Florida spend the remainder of summer. Last summer one or more adult eagles loafed around the lighthouse island in Sunset Lakes, Miramar. We do not know whether they were the Pembroke Pines pair, but let's keep an eye out for them all summer, and report any sightings here. At first, one was rearranging sticks and the other adult flew off and perched in the maleleucas for about an hour. The adult on the nest soon flew off to the south and returned a short time later from that same direction with a stick that was placed on the top of the nest, and then after some rearranging, flew to the maleleucas, landing on a dead trunk west of the other adult. They were there about 30 minutes together and then one flew back to the nest and we watched the other as it spiraled higher and higher from east to west over the nest woods. I was hoping to see little fuzzy heads, but it didn't happen for me. From 5:10 to 5:16, the male eagle was low in the nest. At 5:16, he got up and stood on the edge of the nest. He was visibly feeding his chicks with whatever prey he had cached in the nest. This lasted until 5:24. At 5:24, he unexpectedly left the nest and flew westbound towards a tree branch near the nest area. He stayed there until 5:30, but before he left there, a single Black Vulture flew overhead in a southeasterly direction, but flew very close to the tree tops. Apparently, the male eagle did not like this because he cried out loudly just as the vulture passed. At 5:30, the male eagle flew further west and perched atop one of the melaleuca trees they typically roost on. He stayed there until 5:40, which is when I was going to leave. Before leaving, though, I walked back to the nest to see if the female eagle had shown up, but she hadn't, which means that the nest was left unattended from 5:24 until after 5:40. The only things I can add to this observation is that during this 30-minute period, a flock of White Ibis flew high over the nest area from southeast to northwest and a trio of Monk Parakeets flew into their nest across the street from the southeast. Lastly, I guess I should note that there was a moderate amount of very cold wind blowing in from the northwest. It's going to be cold out there tonight, so I hope our fuzzy little chicks get the warmth they need from their parents! The male eagle feeding his chicks...
