He is ready for release! At this stage, the longer they remain in captivity, the higher the risk that they injure themselves so time is of the essence and the clinic would like to release him as soon as possible. Most juveniles are making their way north on their first migration at this point. We feel it would be best to release him in our area to avoid the long drive back south to be released. I wanted to make sure you were ok with this. If so, we’ll likely release him at Joe Overstreet Landing on Lake Kissimmee where there is a large population of Eagles and an abundant food source. We’ve successfully used this location for other fledgling releases and have been thrilled to hear about their band resightings 2-3 years after release. So we feel confident in the release location. Weather permitting, the release will likely occur tomorrow or Monday morning. We will videotape it so it can be shared with the folks there. And anyone willing to make the drive up on short notice would be welcome to join us to watch the release. If that’s the case please send me their contact info as soon as possible so we can keep them in the loop as the plans are finalized (and sometimes change at the last minute). Thanks! I was about to leave at 11:05 AM when an immature Bald Eagle appeared overhead, flying rather high up. It moved to the south and then came back at a somewhat lower altitude and I obtained a few poor photos due to the distance and overcast sky. It appears to be sub-adult in late third year plumage, evidenced by mostly dark body and wings, considerable white on head and tail with \"osprey line\" streak through its eyes, and rather bright yellow bill and light eyes. Early third year eagles usually show much more white on their bodies and wing linings. The plumage stages can be variable, as eagles take 3-4 years to develop full adult plumage.Very likely a local offspring, probably hatched almost three years ago (if in January, 2017 it would be entering its fourth year of life next month). The nest occupants did not vocalize as sometimes happens, often ending in a chase, when another eagle enters its territory. A hawk was flying just beneath the eagle when it came back from the south. It was very dark, almost black, so I suspected it was a Short-tailed Hawk. This species breeds in northern Florida and spends winters here. It often flies with vultures, which it slightly resembles and probably does this to allow it to surprise its prey, which is almost exclusively smaller birds. I confirmed the identification on the computer screen back home. The plumage of this species may be either light or dark, bu not in between. It has a prominent yellow cere (the lump at base of bill in front of eyes) which stands out against the black plumage, visible in the first photo below). It was very close to PI27 which is Chuck and Dave's nest. That team will monitor the nest to see if they are suddenly only seeing one eagle. The pair had recently mated and we expected incubation soon. The injury is basically a shoulder injury, perhaps a collision of some kind. The Bald Eagle is being transferred to Maitland. Barb Walker Palm Harbor, FL = = = = = Barbara sent this follow-up post with photos: Many thanks to Michelle and Scott at Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary for sharing these photos of the eagle which was rescued yesterday in NE St. Pete. We all feel pretty sure that this is the male eagle from PI27. The eagle has a fractured scapula and a small beak fracture. Many different types of trauma could cause injuries like these, collisions with cars, power lines, or other structures or even an altercation with another eagle. The eagle has his wing wrapped up for now in Maitland. We'll know more as he progresses. It appears that no one has seen a second eagle at the Pembroke Pines nest for nearly two weeks-- keep looking and note the presence or absence of the distinguishing mark on the tail feather if you do see one. We had a second eagle perching with the PI27 female on the cell tower this evening. We do not know if this is the original mate or new mate. It was perched lower, but it was raining very hard at the time. It is possible that the eagle which went down this weekend was an intruder in that territory and was injured when being chased out of the territory. It is also possible that it is the original mate and he ran into something, perhaps even the tower, while chasing an intruder. It's really hard to say for sure but these are things one might speculate could happen at this time of year. The male eagle in Maitland started eating on his own yesterday. He had some parasites and anemia. Many of the eagle watchers who have been watching a pair for a long time are able to tell if there is a mate change several ways; distinguishing mark, ageing by the tail, size difference, bonding behavior. Sometimes new mates won't perch together in the same places as they perched before. I'm sure the observations will be very interesting. Many thanks to Chuck and Dave for their diligence. Luis had been observing and said he believed that the pair had exchanged incubation duties just before he arrived. He also said an earlier observer saw an adult carry in prey consisting of a white bird. The male (Pride) was sitting high on the nest and the female (Jewel) was roosting nearby to the right. Soon, Jewel flew out to roost on the tall pine to the east of the nest. Note that Jewel's hind toe (hallux) extends proportionately longer than that of the male, an identifying feature of the female: Jewel prepares to launch: She then flew off, circling as she disappeared to the north, probably over the large lake which is located at the SE corner of Sheridan and US-27. Pride continued to appear busy at the nest, never sitting deep, which suggests that at least one eaglet may have hatched and also that he may not be incubating any eggs: I did not see any direct evidence that Pride was feeding an eaglet, though his head moved up and down. I never saw him holding any food in his beak: Note that there is a fresh branch of a tree with very tiny leaves and which includes a large seed pod. This is probably from a Mimosa, which is a legume similar to Locust trees. CORRECTION-- This is a Poinciana Tree (AKA Flamboyant), also a legume. \"Native to the country Madagascar, this colorful tree is toxic when consumed. The leaves and flowers contain hydrogen cyanide and the pods contain tannins, both of which can cause various side effects to dogs when consumed.\" See: https://wagwalking.com/condition/poinciana-poisoning I have added a photo of the Poinciana Tree which is directly across from the nest on Pines Boulevard. Note the huge seed pods. The eagles have been seen breaking off fresh branches from these trees in the past and adding them to their nest. Many legume seeds (including raw Lima Beans) contain noxious chemicals such as alkaloids. Possibly this is a measure to deter parasites such as mites. Also take a close look at the feet of the bird which is upside down in the nest. The feet are bright yellow and legs are black, indicating it is a Snowy Egret. Although the Bald Eagle diet usually consists predominately of fish, our local eagles take a large number of wading birds such as ibises and herons. I don't know what happens next but they sure didn't seem to care. The contractors name is XXX. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Thank you I forwarded these concerns to Michelle Vandeventer, FWC Eagle Watch Coordinator: [This resident] who lives near the new Bald Eagle nest with temporary designation DA941 [is concerned], as the road construction will occur very near the nest. Are steps being taken to prevent disturbance as this is occurring in the heart of the breeding season? Is the contractor monitoring the nest? Are they aware of their obligations under FWC guidelines? Who has responsibility for assuring that disturbance does not result in injury, death or abandonment of the nest? Michelle responded: Thank you all for your concern and the information provided. I am working with FWC staff in the area to better understand circumstances and next steps. I also copied Matt Smith, who replied: Ken, thanks for copying me here. EagleWatch has a new volunteer that is monitoring this nest and FWC Law Enforcement has been called to the site more than once, including today due to concerns about disturbance. She called again about 25 minutes later to say that an adult female was roosting near the nest and the male (Pride) was in the nest. I rushed over and got there at about 5:00 PM. A small crowd was already gathering in response to Lisa's Facebook alert. The female was now roosting in the nest tree above and to the left (east) of the male in the nest. The male (Pride) kept looking up at her. He then took flight and landed next to the female and briefly attempted copulation after the female assumed a receptive posture. The male flew down and the female kept calling. The male returned to roost next to the female. Note that the female is not quite in full adult plumage. There are dark streaks on the top of her head and a faint dark line behind each of her eyes. Many of her tail feathers have dark tips. This means she is about 4 years old, and her plumage is entering fifth year or full adult. Eagles are known to breed at this age. She is noticeably larger than the male. Her beak is very large and she has a sloping forehead, unlike Pride's first mate (Joy) who had a high forehead. A question that must be raised is whether this new female may be one of Pride's own offspring from previous years. As I understand it, most wild creatures have behavioral traits that discourage inbreeding, so it will be important to watch and see if this partnership works out. Soon both took flight (the female chasing the male) and circled the nest, over the wooded area and Pines Boulevard. This seemed to be a good sign that they are bonding and also are identifying specifically with this nest. Time will tell. It is possible that breeding may not occur until next season, though it is possible that they may have already been together and mated. The male then roosted at the top of a pine just to the west of the nest and the female disappeared behind the nest. Just as I was leaving at about 5:45 a second year male Bald Eagle suddenly appeared on the scene, flying in over the melaleucas to the west. Other observers will need to relate the subsequent events. I will work on processing some of my flight photos. As you can tell by these shots, it was getting quite dark and they are of poor quality.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-7-New-female-joins-Pride-at-nest-td7573769.html","images":10},{"id":"7573771","topic":"7573769","order":2,"title":"Re: New female joins Pride at nest!","author":"Lisa G","date":"2014-12-08T01:06:32.460000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"I tried to post he pictures of the New Female that I took when I first got to the nest .. Great job to all of the volunteers who dedicated their time to making all of those observations at the nest. Something a cam would have never caught with its narrow field of vision! You wrote the question about whether the new female could be one of Pride's own offspring. We had to research this for burrowing owls, and lots of recent studies show some level of inbreeding especially in raptors, it is more common than not. Usually at low levels, like 10-13% in burrowing owls, but the worry is often that if a species is too rare or has a limited dispersal pattern, it may exaggerate that natural rate. Burrowing owls also live colonially and double brood, characteristics that make this more prevalent. If the eagles are just expanding back into Broward County and there are only a few nests, so nearby eagles more rare and more likely related, it may be possible. At these lower levels, the offspring develop normally and seem to do just fine, so that is the good news. In burrowing owls, the juvenile females tend to disperse longer distances than males, and this is one of the traits that Ken described that help minimize inbreeding. So maybe this juvenile female needed a mate too and was reaching way beyond her home territory to find Pride.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-7-New-female-joins-Pride-at-nest-td7573769.html","images":0},{"id":"7573777","topic":"7573769","order":7,"title":"Re: New female joins Pride at nest!","author":"Lisa G","date":"2014-12-08T11:05:44.236000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Just a note . I'd call it a \"rangy\" look (did I use that adjective properly? -- dictionary says: of an animal : having a long body and long legs; long-limbed and long-bodied <rangy cattle>; synonym in context: a gangling teenager / a lanky kid transformed almost overnight into a handsome young man). In any event it strikes me that she may not be genetically as close as expected in an offspring. As we have seen, eagles can be great shape-shifters, fluffing out and turning into a ball or flattening their feathers and stretching out to look twice as tall. At least we have the dark tail feathers and head markings of the new female to help avoid arguments over which is which. The presence of the younger immature reminds me of the two that visited the nest several times last breeding season. They came together a few times. One of the watchers said he saw a similar pair of birds roosting \"down along Krome.\" On March 14, 2014 I wrote this about the older immature that visited the nest: Lots of excitement at the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle nest this morning. I got there at about 10:15 AM. Both eaglets were active in the nest. There was a brisk northerly wind. The male (Pride) came in with prey from behind the nest. After feeding the eaglets he roosted on a branch just above the nest. Suddenly, at about 10:45 AM the adult and the eaglets were in a state of alarm, calling and looking up. An immature Bald Eagle that looked like a second year bird suddenly circled around the nest tree. Pride took off after it and they disappeared to the south. Pride soon came back and resumed watch at the nest. The same immature appeared again and was driven off more forcefully. Pride took up a watch on the horizontal branch higher up above the nest. There was excited calling and suddenly at about 11:30 TWO immature eaglets appeared. Pride chased each one in turn but they lingered and circled for about 10 minutes before disappearing in the sky to the north. Watchers were not sure whether the first immature, which was a 2nd year bird, had returned. The other bird had a white head and darker tail, so it was a 4th year sub-adult.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-7-New-female-joins-Pride-at-nest-td7573769.html","images":1},{"id":"7573789","topic":"7573769","order":10,"title":"Re: New female joins Pride at nest!","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-12-09T10:02:15.523000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"As Kelly pointed out, there is a relatively small population of Bald Eagles in far south Florida, and it is fair to suppose that many are closely related, as juveniles commonly return to the general area where they were raised. Normally the adults drive away juveniles and independent immature eaglets. This natural behavior encourages dispersal and more diversity in the genetic pool. Although I cannot find any studies to confirm my supposition, I believe that more subtle traits may also operate to discourage inbreeding. For example, it has been proven that many species are able to recognize their progeny and parents by the sound of their calls, beginning inside the egg. Penguins and many colonial seabirds exhibit the uncanny ability to recognize each other amid huge crowds of neighbors. Perhaps there is a corresponding instinctive carry-over of the tendency of adults to drive away other eagles that they recognize by their voice to be their young from previous years. I would like to learn whether this hypothesis has been or even can be tested. In any event, here is an article about the lack of genetic diversity in eagles of Tasmania. 7 November, 2013 10:59AM AEDT Tasmania's wedge-tailed eagles have the inbreeding blues By Carol Raabus and Ryk Goddard \"Any smaller population is potentially prone to inbreeding depression,\" says Dr Chris Burridge from the School of Zoology at UTas. Dr Burridge says he can't comment on the psychological state of the eagles, but the small isolated population means the individual eagles are not as fit and healthy in Tasmania as their mainland relatives. \"Any species that lives in Tasmania and, for example has relatives on the mainland, if they're not breeding with those relatives on the mainland, they're more likely to breed with individuals in Tasmania with which they're related,\" says Dr Burridge... ...\"From a genetic perspective, it might be worth considering bringing mainland individuals to Tasmania, because there's a lot more genetic variation on the mainland and that increased genetic variation could increase the fitness of the individuals here in Tasmania,\" he says. Put away the fleece and back into T-shirts and shorts! Now is when I love living in Florida! South Florida enjoys two seasons: Hot and wet from June through September, and mild and dry from October through May. We had departed for our second home in Illinois in late October, after a period of abnormally abundant precipitation. Our lake was filled to brimming. Birding had been slow in our local birding patch next to our subdivision because because fish and other aquatic prey were diluted in the high water, dispersing the long-legged waders throughout the Everglades. Hurricane Sandy brushed by just after we departed Florida, delivering high winds and beach erosion but little moisture. After that, temperatures moderated and rainfall was scant. Our lake has receded about two feet since our trip north, and now its margin no longer reaches up to cover part of our back lawn. We slept with open windows, and early the next morning wasted no time getting back out on the gravel road that extends a mile from the entrance of our subdivision into the water conservation area. As usual, we started out walking briskly, Mary Lou in the lead, while I lugged my binoculars and camera gear a few paces behind her. She pointed out a nice Northern Cardinal along the path. Of course I stopped to take his picture, then struggled to keep up, feeling like a toy poodle on a jogger's leash. Ahead, we beheld an unusual and welcome sight as we approached the Harbour Lakes mitigation impoundment (a fancy name for land set aside by the developer to compensate, rather symbolically, for the damage caused by draining and filling the historic Everglades to build our homes). The white forms of scores of ibises, egrets and (Holy Cow!) American White Pelicans circled over the lake. Since moving here in 2004, despite our nearly daily walks, we had never encountered pelicans on our birding patch. The pelicans fed cooperatively, driving a school of fish in front of them as they advanced in a line. Lower lake levels had concentrated their prey into a nutritious \"soup.\" I counted 23 pelicans. They approached closely, following the frightened fish up to the shoreline. This brief film clip demonstrates the pelicans' cooperative fishing technique (I didn't realize that I still have a New Jersey accent after being away 50 years!) [Trouble viewing? Go to VIMEO at this link] Masters of flight, some of the pelicans wheeled overhead. Wood Storks joined them. By now I had fallen far behind Mary Lou. I barely heard her shout: \"Spoonbills!\" Yes! Three Roseate Spoonbills dabbled with the storks, ibises and egrets, up close and personal. (Two days later on November 27, a fourth spoonbill was present). This video clip shows the spoonbills' feeding technique. [Trouble viewing? Go to VIMEO at this link ] A Great Egret flew in to join an immature Great Blue Heron (note its darker plumage and black cap) that was feeding with the spoonbills and pelicans. Like storks, spoonbills are tactile feeders-- they sweep their specialized bills and clamp down when they detect their prey, which consist mostly of fishes and other aquatic animals. The water is just the right depth to keep their eyes from being submerged. This immature Little Blue Heron is a sight feeder. It adapts the typical posture of its species while stalking for fishes, the tip of its bill just above the surface of the water. The waders included several adult Little Blue Herons... ...and Snowy Egrets. In this interesting shot, both a spoonbill and a pelican are demonstrating how they use their bills as strainers. A Bald Eagle flew over and at least a hundred egrets, herons, ibises and spoonbills took flight. The pelicans seemed not to be disturbed by the predator. Three drab Double-crested Cormorants watched a colorful spoonbill fly by. I call this photo \"feather envy.\" We logged 45 bird species, among them a Caspian Tern... ...a lone Mottled Duck... ...a belted Kingfisher... ...and four distant Red-breasted Mergansers. On our second walk, clouds gathered over the impoundment. Note the grove of exotic Melaleuca trees to the right. They were treated with herbicide a couple of months ago. Two years ago, a pair of Ospreys nested there. Soon they will be cleared to make way for the highway extension that will also result in the paving of our beloved gravel road. Progress! Our walk was cut short by a rain storm that came up suddenly. This is the view in front of me as we hurried home. The shower lasted only a few minutes.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/BLOG-Pelicans-and-spoonbills-in-the-lake-southeast-of-eagle-nest-td7572847.html","images":24},{"id":"7572848","topic":"7572847","order":2,"title":"Re: BLOG: Pelicans and spoonbills in the lake southeast of eagle nest","author":"Jill W","date":"2012-12-04T09:12:37.416000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"WOW, Ken! I drive along Stirling through the Sunshine Ranches area of SW Ranches (between Volunteer and Flamingo) almost daily and over the past year or so I have seen wood storks on several occasions standing next to or wading in the shallow canals, either the one right along Stirling or one of the ones that runs off of the one along Stirling. I don't think I have ever seen more than one at a time, there might have been 2 once, but I could be seeing hte same lonely bird each time. I do not ever remember seeing any before about a year ago, although I am certainly not looking hard as I'm driving in the morning and I don't stay and observe them, but maybe there is a colony close by . . . I believe Flamingo Gardens tries to release the offspring of the injured birds who are residents there, maybe the storks I have seen are the offspring of those birds and have stayed close by. I have also caught glances of several heron species, and last fall I saw 2 pileated woodpeckers on the same tree as I was driving north along Volunteer between Sheridan and Stirling. The nest is barely visible from the road-- I tried several spots hoping to see it better. I am concerned because the southerly (and southeasterly) winds are common and the eagles favor landing into the wind. They also generally choose nests with long sight distance in many directions. I hope this does not cause them to abandon the site. It will be important to determine whether this bird and mate will breed here again this fall. Restoration/renovation of the nest usually begins by late September or early October. Females have a noticeably longer hallux (hind toe) and the gape of beak may extend back to or beyond the middle of her eye. An excerpt: Bold (sic) Eagle: The topic of preservation of wild life habitat was discussed in length. There is an active Bald Eagle nest that is located within the project limits on the south side of roadway. As per contract requirements, no construction work shall be conducted during eagle nesting season, from October 1st through May 15th, between station 44+00(west of 209 Ave) and station 57+20(east of 208 Ave). The adult was tucked in the pines, frequently totally hidden with the wind and swaying branches. It remaind there for almost 2 hrs. The young had a usual morning on the nest of exercising, standing on the rim and resting down low. This was broken when food was brought in at about 11:00. All 3 birds were eating, until the young went lower in the nest and remained that way for a while. Unlike other observations of mine, the adult remained tall on the right side of the nest for a long time, occasionally looking down at the young. Both young got up and stood for a while with the 3 birds in a row. I wondered if this was the time the adult would encourage a flight from the young...but there wasn't even any wing flapping with the adult present. There have not been crowds of observers to cause the public safety issues that were encountered the past two seasons. However, many eyes on the nest did have a protective effect. This past week (between Wednesday March 23 and Friday the 25th), the older of the two eaglets has gone missing. Almost 10 weeks old, it was about a week younger than the fledging age observed in the past two seasons. On average, the first flight is said to occur between 10 and 12 weeks, and the eaglet looked big and healthy-- so big that it was likely a female, as sexual dimorphism can be evident in the nestlings. It will probably be enticed to return to the nest for food within the next day. However, we have not heard it calling and there has been no report of protective behavior on the part of the adults as we have seen in the past, such as roosting near the downed eaglet's location and peering down. Bottom line-- if anyone happens to be in the vicinity of the nest, please report behavioral observations (whether positive or negative), and of course let us know if you do see the second chick, hopefully back on the nest.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Video-of-a-lonely-little-eaglet-March-27-td6213108.html","images":0},{"id":"6213320","topic":"6213108","order":2,"title":"Re: Video of a lonely little eaglet March 27","author":"fcalz","date":"2011-03-27T19:40:02.125000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"HAPPY TO REPORT THE EAGLET IS BACK IN THE NEST. In the latter case, be sure that the photo is JPG format. The address must end in \".jpg\" or it will not display. Be sure to \"resize\" the image, as the original may be larger than the size of the screen. If you wish to have photos appear in your message, use the drop-down menu at the top of the \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" window. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" Generally, the \"Large\" size option works fine, as it resizes the image to fit the screen. Also let the image \"float\" inside any text you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere in your message.
