Very quiet, with female (Jewel) roosting to the right of the nest the entire time. Could hear eaglet(s) calling from time to time but did not see a single head pop up for almost a half hour. They must have just been fed. Jewel is recognizable through the foliage by her bulky body, deep gape which extends well below her eye... ...and the fact that all her tail feathers are white. The male (Pride) has one dark outer tail feather. One eaglet was fairly active. (FWC photos) Cages holding illegally trapped birds Indigo bunting in cage News Release April 7, 2010 Contact: Gabriella B. Ferraro, [phone withheld] You may see them around your backyard feeder. They are prized for their colorful plumage. Indigo and painted buntings are migratory songbirds that winter in South Florida and migrate north in the spring, but some make a year-round home in the Sunshine State. With their numbers declining because of habitat loss, these beautiful birds face an additional ugly threat: the exotic pet trade. The buntings, protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, are frequently trapped and sold. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) continues to break up these rings and release the captive birds back into their natural habitats. From April 3-6, in three separate cases, FWC investigators arrested four Miami-Dade men, charging each with the illegal possession of migratory birds, a misdemeanor. One of the men, Gustavo Castresana (DOB 03/01/80) of Hialeah, was arrested for the same violation in 2005. He was booked into the county jail and could face enhanced penalties. Miguel Castro (DOB 07/29/57) of Homestead, Adrian Acosta-Gonzalez (DOB 11/25/72) of Miami and Ruben Echevarria-Liens (DOB 11/29/74) of Miami were in possession of bird traps, and are all facing charges. FWC officers released 20 captive birds - 19 buntings and one cardinal. \"These birds do not belong in captivity; they belong in their natural habitats to proliferate and continue the species,\" said FWC Lt. Jay Marvin. \"The public should be aware that trapping, possessing, buying and/or selling these birds is a violation of state and federal laws and can result in hefty fines and possible jail time.\" The public is asked to call the FWC's Wildlife Alert hotline - 888-808-FWCC (3922) - if they witness any suspicious activity or any people with small, wooden bird traps.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FWC-charges-4-Miami-Dade-men-for-possessing-migratory-birds-td4870354.html","images":3},{"id":"7574174","topic":"7574174","order":1,"title":"Bald Eagle seen at Wolf Lake","author":"ctitanic","date":"2015-10-18T12:59:24.482000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"A bald eagle have been flying around Wolf Lake, Davie. This is Shawnlei's full message: Hello! It has been a challenging week, hasn’t it? I know many of you across the state are still without power, water and/or phones and internet access. My office at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is still without power, phones and internet. I am fortunate to have power at home but no internet, so I am sending this from a local sandwich shop. J Thankfully, I am able to view my emails on my mobile phone, so that is the best way to reach me over the next few days. We hope to have all services restored back at the Center by early next week. Because of Irma, FWC sent out a notice today that they have elected to reschedule tomorrow’s Bald Eagle Species Action Plan (SAP) webinar. They have not announced the replacement date yet, but I will let you all know as soon as I do. You may also sign up to receive email updates on the process directly from FWC by emailing [email withheld]. I encourage you to do so if you are interested in providing feedback on the draft SAP as this is the most efficient way to receive a copy of the draft and access the time-sensitive information and details on how to submit comments on the draft. In preparation to provide feedback on the draft SAP, I have been talking with Julie Wraithmell, the Deputy Executive Director of Audubon Florida. She is especially interested to know how many nests were impacted by Hurricane Irma. When you are able and it is safe to visit your nest, we could use your help collecting information on how your eagle nests fared in the storm. To make it as easy as possible to collect the information, Julie’s office created a handy online form that you can complete from your smart phone, tablet or laptop: fl.audubon.org/nestdata. With FWC revising the Bald Eagle Management Plan, we think it’s important that there is a clear understanding of how this storm has affected nest availability for the coming season. I know several of you have emailed me directly, or posted on Facebook or in the database about the status of your nests. I apologize for duplicating effort, but completing this form will allow Julie’s office to quickly gather the data she wishes to present to FWC. If you have any trouble accessing the form, you may send me your compiled notes on your nests and I will enter them for you. Thanks so much for your help with this. Many of your pairs are back and working on their nests or rebuilding after Irma. While it has been hard to hear the reports of nests gone and trees down, I’m just so glad that Irma came early, before eggs were laid. For pairs that lost their nest tree, they will likely rebuild in the area. Your observations and help finding these relocations will be invaluable. Thank you again for all you do for the eagles! Undoubtedly the pair is now waiting for a second brood to hatch after the first was lost. This is also what happened three years ago. We can safely conclude that there are eggs in the nest. The reason it has sometimes appeared to be abandoned is because the incubating adult is very deep and more to the rear of the nest. The front rim is also very high and the intervening Australian Pine \"needles\" (actually they are branches with tiny scale-like leaves which make them look like needles). I arrived at the nest at 9:30 AM and watched until 10:45. Luis was there and Phil had been watching earlier and I just missed seeing him. Richard joined us. The male (Pride) was roosting on the center nest support branch and Jewel was nearly out of sight in the nest most of the time. At around 9:50 Jewel appeared to tend the eggs, became restless and then flew up to join Pride on the branch. They called together for a short period, and then Jewel flew to the east behind the trees. Pride replaced her on the nest and remained out of sight except for occasional glimpses of the top of his head from that point on. Jewel had roosted on a tree, set back from Pines Boulevard and about half way between the nest and SW 208th Avenue. Light was from behind and it was difficult to get a clear image of her, but she remained at that spot and was still there when I departed.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FEB-22-Pair-exchanges-incubation-duties-td7575502.html","images":9},{"id":"5954113","topic":"5954113","order":1,"title":"baby eagle at nest","author":"Kathy","date":"2011-01-23T22:38:27.272000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"I was at the nest today around 10:45 and the local bus driver told me I just missed one of the pair flying away from the nest. The south Florida eaglets usually fly north to find cooler water. Here the the fish are seeking the oxygen which is more concentrated in the cooler depths and are harder for these inexperienced hunters to catch. They seem normally to fly away around June or by early July and return in mid-autumn, while the south Florida adults generally hang around the area of the nest territory. Your last sightings report was in March but since then you mention seeing them around sunset. The two eaglets in Pembroke Pines have only been flying for 3-4 weeks and possibly will remain somewhat dependent on parents for another month and migrate later or not at all. It is really exciting anticipating the days ahead when we discover how many eaglets there are in the nest! I have only one other thing to add to Ken's great description and that is observation that was seen by Tom this morning. He saw both adults on the nest, looking in and moving around and then one flew to one of the tall palms in the median. The eagle seemed to pull at the palm and seemed to be after something in the tree (as a bird, etc). The other adult in the nest was calling loudly and Tom said the next thing he knew, they were switching places, with one heading to the maleleucas. I arrived shortly after this action and observed what looked like an adult on the nest pulling at something in the nest like feedings last yr. This kept up for about 10 min., when at 8:20 the adult in the maleleucas flew to the vacant field and brought back a large talon-full clump of brown straw. It joined the other adult on the nest and they both continued \"poking\" and watching down in the nest, both standing. Soon one went low with only the head seen and the other flew to the perch in the pine, east of the nest to preen (as they do after feedings) Ken and Mary Lou arrived shortly after and have reported the action from then on. In the span of the 2 plus hours that I was there, both adults were always in sight in the area and twice within that period an adult brought fresh nesting material from the field. The adult seemed to be hunting prey close to the nest in the median and the adult not on the nest never went farther than the maleleucas or the pine near the nest. I definitely agree with Ken that we have enough circumstantial evidence to be quite certain that at least one egg has hatched. It also appears that they are doing an excellent job of tending to the hatchling(s), as we all observed last year.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-January-24th-Hatch-day-2-td4450000.html","images":0},{"id":"4451718","topic":"4450000","order":6,"title":"Re: Sunday, January 24th Hatch day +2","author":"Jill W","date":"2010-01-24T21:03:55.383000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"I watched from 3:00 PM until about 5:15. I had not read Ken's post when I left home this afternoon, and was very glad to read it when I was back at home---I wasn't sure how to describe how confident I was that an adult flew to the nest at 4:39 PM and began to pull at prey and probably feed an eaglet as it did not appear to eating anything itself. It was less than 10 seconds between the time the feeding adult arrived and the incubating one flew away to the melaleucas. From 3:00 PM until 4:39, the only thing that happened was that the same adult was always on the nest and spent a fair amount of time rearranging things on the nest. I was mooned for lengthy periods of time. I did not see another adult in the area. Mike arrived about 5 minutes after the switch at 4:39. I have not heard anything new about the planned construction of the Wal-mart and Publix on the eagle nest site since the eagles and the nest are no longer there.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Hurricane-destroyed-Palm-Springs-North-nest-DA004-last-sighting-OCT-5-2016-td7574796.html","images":0},{"id":"7574643","topic":"7574643","order":1,"title":"Week 12/31/16 Chicks in the nest!","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2016-12-31T19:42:10.893000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hello everyone, I'm so excited! My husband and I are traveling in Florida and I googled eagles nests in south Florida and found this site. Thanks to your gracious admin Ken I was able to find the nest today and took some photos. We were there around noon. There was one parent and one visible eaglet. The photos aren't the best. The long pine needles gave it an air of mystery and beauty, but made it virtually impossible to get a clear shot :). I hope you are successful in getting your cam. Given the age and size of the eaglets I am surprised that the second was not visible. I hope other watchers will provide images as evidence of its continued presence. The Berry College Eagle Cam site is very informative and could serve as a model for the educational benefits it can offer. It is inspiring to see that private companies have contributed material support. I assume that the ongoing costs of broadband and maintenance are still rather substantial. Here is an active link to the nest, in which a single eaglet appears to be nearly ready to fledge: http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/ Here is an excerpt from the Information page: ABOUT THE BERRY EAGLES' \"NEST\" AND \"APPROACH\" CAMERAS Berry is excited to provide live video feeds of the bald eagle nest. Georgia Power once again donated the use of a truck and manpower this year to install two new cameras, camera 1 and camera 2, both with sound. One of these cameras was donated by Axis Communications Inc. Both nest cameras are Axis model Q1765-LE. Although these cameras are high definition, in order to stream video content across the web there will be some reduction in resolution. We monitor the cameras and streaming account closely and will make adjustments to enhance your experience quickly and to the extent that we can. The approach camera, a third camera. is situated on a pole across from the nest tree. It is a Pelco camera and is new for the 2015-16 season... - See more at: http://www.berry.edu/eaglecam/nestcam/#sthash.z0r1fgLT.dpuf","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-Visit-4-29-16-td7574493.html","images":0},{"id":"7574502","topic":"7574493","order":3,"title":"Re: Nest Visit 4/29/16","author":"gailmjohnson","date":"2016-05-10T22:58:56.167000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Yes, we have been very fortunate to have some corporate support, and Berry College has ben very gracious to fund the nest.
