The developers have been counseled about the necessary precautions, but it is of the utmost importance that one or more volunteers step forward to monitor the site. The nest itself is required to be protected, even when the eagles are not present or have not returned to breed in late September or early October. Since they have the permit to proceed, they will be held harmless if they follow the USFWS guidelines even if the eagles abandon the nest or are injured or killed. Shawnlei will provide the necessary orientation, training and reporting procedures. Brian Rapoza, <[email withheld]>, who is Vice President/Field Trip Coordinator for Tropical Audubon Society is working to identify local birders willing to monitor the nest and submit online reports. Again, The coordinates on Google Earth are: [ [precise coordinate withheld], [precise coordinate withheld] ] Shawnlei writes: Hello! I’ve been informed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service that the developer recently applied for and received a federal eagle disturbance permit for their planned work near this nest. I have not seen a copy of the permit but the permit will outline what they can and cannot do at various distances from the nest when eagles are present and attempting to nest this fall. Monitoring of this nest will be of the utmost importance to make sure they abide by the permit stipulations. Failure to abide by the permit stipulations is considered a federal violation. A local photographer occasionally reported to me what was happening near the nest last season, but EagleWatch does not have an assigned volunteer to monitor this nest. This location would definitely benefit from more consistent monitoring and reporting. The monitoring reports are necessary for Florida Fish and Wildlife to build a case against a developer if they are suspected of violating their permit. These kids had never held a pair of binoculars before, much less been bird watching. We were watching 3 Snowies and a juvenile Little Blue Heron standing about 100 yards out in the marsh and I was trying to point out the differences in the two species. An adult Bald Eagle flew over the group and made a half hearted swoop down toward the birds. Then its partner suddenly raced in and came within a few feet of snatching one of the birds before it flew. All four birds flew in panic, three to the north, one to the south. Being isolated, he was the one the eagles went after. It was over in a 30 seconds. One of the eagles flipped almost upside down and snatched the egret out of the air. Meanwhile the kids were beside themselves with excitement. The eagle with the egret landed out of our line of vision and its partner landed in a pine tree in a spot where we could still get fairly good scope views. Needless to say the kids had plenty to talk about with their friends. After Mary Lou crossed over to the median she looked up and saw an adult standing high on the nest with its back to us. It could either have been an incubation shift change or a food drop, but we believe it was the former, because we saw no feeding activity on the nest. To our surprise, we then saw the top of the head of a second eagle, low in the nest to the right. This was confirmed by (poor) photos. The eagle that I saw flying off must have actually circled and returned immediately without us noticing. The standing eagle did look down to the right at its mate, but there was no other interaction. After about five minutes, the eagle that had been standing up flew to the left (east) and then disappeared in the woods heading south. The second eagle was still sitting deep in the nest and was usually not visible except for occasionally showing the top of its head. We departed after about 45 minutes of observation, as the sitting bird remained low. We checked the melaleuca stumps and other roosting trees near the nest, but did not see the second eagle again. Construction must start after the end of nesting season (May 1), and end before the breeding season officially commences October 1. Sad thing is that there is power and a step-down transformer on the pole that connects with the electric distribution lines right in front of the nest, and cable service is provided within 100 yards. There is also a broadband communication distribution line running under the power lines, so the necessary services for internet connection should be readily available. FP&L and Comcast/NBC6 or AT&T might some day agree to provide service lines and web hosting at a marginal cost. It could have been a valuable educational and community service as well as provide publicity and advertising on the web site. Material costs are not that great-- a camera and installation would run no much more than $10K plus operating costs (mostly for electricity and broadband). A little before sunrise, our patio view of the sky looked ominous. Watery pearls festooned the spider silk. Tall blades of grass, weighed down by the dew, drooped over the trail. Some of my early morning photos had not been as sharp as I expected, and I had an \"Aha!\" moment when I noticed the fog covering my camera lens. Of course, the camera had spent the night in air-conditioned comfort, and warm, moist air had kissed the cold glass. My microfiber lens cloth came in handy, and I did much better this time. The first test of the fog-free lens was this Eastern Towhee, which exhibited the white eyes of the southern subspecies; those migrating here from the north have red eyes. A Common Ground-Dove looked down from a safe perch. A Prairie Warbler brightened up the morning: Palm Warblers were everywhere. By the way, we did not see any Bobcats, but we keep trying... Okay, now that this is officially a \"birding\" blog, I've got to tell what happened THIS morning. Again, we got out early, about 15 minutes before sunrise. When we stopped to check out the usual spot for Bobcats, we immediately saw three, far ahead to the south on the levee path. It was the same adult female with her two half-grown cubs that we have seen several time during the past month. This first photo is heavily cropped, as they were over 100 yards away, walking towards us. The adult is on the right. Mary Lou left me to continue her walk, knowing I would remain uncommunicative and glued to my camera as long as Bobcats were in sight. I stalked closer to the cats, keeping to the high grass near the edge of the canal, on the left. To my advantage, there was a slight SE breeze in my face. At first the cubs appeared to be playing, but they eventually moved into the brush on the left side of the path while the adult kept watch over them with her back to me. I walked a few steps and then took a shot. Since the power of my 420 mm lens system is equivalent to 8X binoculars, each step brought me (optically) about 16 feet nearer to the cats. I reached a point about 40 yards from the adult, then moved out into the path to get a clear shot. She was intent on watching the cubs, so I moved a bit nearer. Suddenly she turned and saw me, and began watching me intently. She stood up and then walked diagonally in my direction before rather purposefully disappearing into the brush while continuing towards me. A House Wren began chattering near her position. Then I heard the wren, or another, begin scolding more to my right. In the meantime, the larger cub had emerged onto the trail and was sitting on the path just staring in my direction. The cub finally began to look alarmed and ran off into the high grasses of the expansive wetlands to the right. Meanwhile, the chattering of the wren started coming from just alongside me, then moved a bit behind me to my right. I assumed it meant that the parent Bobcat was checking me out, but I could not see or hear any sign of her. If she had been a panther, I would have been very anxious about coming between her and the cubs. Then, the second, smaller of the two cubs startled me by walking out only about 25-30 feet in front of me. The smaller cub looked back towards where its larger litter-mate had disappeared into the brush. At first it walked slowly towards me. For a while it seemed to be looking past me. I couldn't stand the suspense, so I turned my head to see if the mother had moved on to the path behind me, but I did not see her. My movement scared the cub and it twitched its tail before running off. </body> </html>","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bobcats-in-the-wetlands-SE-of-eagle-nest-td7032192.html","images":21},{"id":"7575768","topic":"7575768","order":1,"title":"JAN 15: Nest construction continues at a slower pace","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2021-01-15T16:13:33.757000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"I visited the new nest on mornings twice earier this week-- on Sunday (JAN 10) and yesterday (JAN 14). Anel had just gotten there ahead of me and saw both adults. They flew to the west. Then one adult (possibly Jewel) came back to the nest carrying a fresh branch with leaves, and Pride came in at least twice, carrying a stick and then green foliage. Then, at about 8:45 AM both adults disappeared. About 15-20 minutes later Jewel suddenly flew in, calling and settled on a tree to the west near the old nest. She stayed in place for more than a half hour and was there when I departed at about 9:45 AM. The nest has grown very large. The platform (bole) is the highest part of the structure, to the right (west) and not easy to see unless the wind blows the branches away. Sticks now completely fill the space between the two main support branches. My reply: Hi, R--- There is an eagle nest in Deerfield Beach, only about [specific street address withheld] exit (Exit 14, I believe), just on the NE corner of the Turnpike & SW 10th St. This very well could have been one from this nest, which is now active and hopefully will be raising their young very soon. I wonder if there is a lake near there where they can catch fish and waterfowl. Please keep an eye out as observations such as yours can provide a better idea of the birds' territorial habits. There is always the chance that this was an eagle from a different territory, though none are known to be very near there. You probably are familiar with Ospreys which can look like eagles but are smaller, have white bellies and do not have entirely white heads, so your 95% confidence level sounds very credible! Utah Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman Mark Hadley said Thursday that a fifth eagle found in Weber County died this week in a rehab center in Ogden. A sixth eagle discovered in Davis County is there with the same head tremors the dead ones had, he said. An additional seven eagles were found dead in the same two-week period — and wildlife officials fear they may have all died from the same cause, Hadley said. They won't know for sure until tests are done, however, because nobody saw if these eagles had the tremors before dying. Thousands of bald eagles migrate to Utah each winter, with many gathering at the Great Salt Lake where there's plenty of carp to eat in freshwater bays. The recent rash of deaths has raised serious alarms in Utah. \"I don't ever recall having this many eagles die in such a short period of time,\" Hadley said. \"It is very unusual.\" Utah State University is expected to have preliminary results early next week for the first four eagles that died at the rehab centers, Hadley said. That should provide some clues to help solve the mystery illness. It could be encephalitis, which is caused by West Nile Virus, though officials said it seems too late in the year for that. They don't think they were killed on purpose. To find out what killed the other seven, wildlife officials sent the majestic birds to a lab in Madison, Wisconsin It could take up to a month to get the necropsy test results back due to a backlog there and because it takes longer over the holidays, Hadley said. The dying birds have all been discovered since the beginning of December and were found in four different counties: Weber, Box Elder, Tooele and Utah.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Officials-probe-mysterious-bald-eagle-deaths-in-Utah-td7573290.html","images":0},{"id":"4615951","topic":"4615951","order":1,"title":"CBS4 Coverage of Eagles today February 22","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-02-22T19:19:40.194000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"The local CBS-4 evening news had a spot on the eagle nest. A nesting pair of bald eagles who first settled last year in Pembroke Pines returned in September. Broward County's first bald eagle pair since the 1970s produced three chicks in the past four weeks. The eagles first built their nest last year in an Australian pine tree on an undeveloped tract of land just south of Pines Blvd. They raised two eaglets there before heading north for the hot summer months. They've been hard at work rebuilding their nest since returning to South Florida, and awed onlookers have taken notice. \"It's amazing, huge! The nest gets bigger every time,\" said Travis Tanner. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis said the eagles have made his city famous. \"When I travel people say, 'What a great thing! You have bald eagles in Pembroke Pines,'\" said Ortis. Bald eagles are the national bird of the United States of America. They're no longer on the endangered species list, but harming them is still illegal. To protect the birds, the city put up a chain link fence and erected signs warning people and dogs to stay away. \"I'm so glad they're keeping the area clear. We don't need anyone troubling them,\" says Jennifer Lister. Of course, it's not discouraging folks from dropping by for a closer look. Some conservationalists are worried that onlookers are wandering into the street to get a look at the birds. But Ortis is most concerned with what to name the eaglets. For the second straight year, school children will name the three new eaglets through a contest. Last year, they came up with \"Hope\" and \"Justice.\"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/CBS4-Coverage-of-Eagles-today-February-22-td4615951.html","images":0},{"id":"7573681","topic":"7573681","order":1,"title":"New to Eagle Watching, but want to help","author":"TierraLady","date":"2014-11-26T03:28:07.607000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"I live in PP, across CB Smith. Rather, they begin to follow their parents, beg for food, and then the hunting instinct takes over. They get better with age, and as a result they depend more on \"easy\" food sources when young-- roadkill, carrion, garbage, etc, which exposes them to risks of vehicle collisions and poisoning. Thanks for your informative piece. BTW, I was out early this morning from 7 am to 9:45 am. The fog was so dense early on that the eagle nest was barely discernible, and the traffic light to the east was not at all visible. By 7:30 am, the sun had burned away most of the fog and I found the nest to be empty. No eagles came into view until near 8:30 am, at which time I captured a few video clips. They have been uploaded to YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jG5GwXlO8o . The video shows a couple of interesting exchanges you may want to check out. I was very surprised when an adult (female I believe) challenged her incoming mate and looked very menacing for the first few seconds. And on another clip, one of the juveniles few in and with lots of wing contact upended an adult who then flew to a bare branch above the nest and watched as the second juvenile flew in. Jewel sometimes settled into the nest, but not for any prolonged period of time until January 31 and February 1, when she remained deep in the nest. She was barely visible, as demonstrated by this photo on February 1: This is a close crop of the above photo, showing the head of the female eagle through the structure of the nest rim: Subsequently several instances of incubation exchange between the pair were seen. Generally we have noted that the female tended to incubate overnight but cannot be sure that this is happening now. However, at 7:25 AM (about 20 minutes after sunrise) on February 3, an adult which appears to be Jewel (deep gape and normal secondary feather pattern on left wing) flew over west Miramar, about 2 miles SE of the nest and flying away from the nest location, which is NW of this location. She may have exchanged incubation duties with her mate, but there were no reported ground observations from the nest site at that time. I wonder if we might do a fund raiser in the community to make them more aware of the eagles and perhaps collect money that way? It is worth a shot. Perhaps we could approach local businesses as well and why don't we contact the local TV and radio stations and ask for their help in making the community aware of the nest and the need for a nest cam. I think that many people would love to be able to watch the eagles right from the comfort of their own home. It is worth a shot Kathy And again: Hi Ken it's Kathy again I wonder too it we can contact the people who put up the Iowa camera and ask them how they went about funding theirs. My response: Hi, Kathy. I did not see a final cost proposal, but it is in the range of $15,000.00-- about 10-12K for the camera, installation, software and web hosting, and additional for ongoing maintenance, antennas (if wireless option is chosen). The concept of placing the camera on the high light standard (installed by FDOT but subsequently turned over to the City of Pembroke Pines) did not take into consideration the need to lower the ring at the top that holds the lights, for replacement and maintenance. Anything like a camera and antenna/dish would create an obstruction. FPL simply will not permit a camera on the power pole. Unfortunately, FPL officials subsequently indicated to the Mayor and the chair of his Steering Committee that they would relent and sponsor a camera on the power pole in front of the nest. According to the chairman, FPL did not follow through and apparently reverted to their original position without advising anyone. This caused loss of precious time. Our original proposal, to place the camera on a branch above the nest, was shot down by FWC-- I'm not entirely sure of the rationale, but it probably related to the belief that the eagles might be disturbed by the presence of a foreign object so nearby. Of course, the USF&WS mounted a camera on a tree in West Virginia, and the Decorah (Iowa) eagle nest cam is located on a branch next to the nest, about 80 feet up in the tree. The advantage of a tree-mounted camera is that the camera moves with the nest when the wind blows, so only the background appears to move and there is no problem with a swaying image. Further, since the tree is on City land it poses no issue of having to construct a new platform for the camera. As you may have noticed, the Decorah nest camera often has over 7,000 viewers at a single time (repeat-- not \"hits,\" but actual people from all over the world, and even classrooms of children all viewing the exciting image at once). It is no wonder that they attracted major advertisers who compete with each other and certainly pay good money to display their varied products to a worldwide audience for 30 seconds every time the screen is opened. There are also unobtrusive pop-up ads at the bottom of the screen and in the right column, as well as educational information in the panel below, not to mention a chat feature that brings the general public into a discussion of the wonders that unfold before their very eyes. it is amazing-- any reader who has not yet done so should check it out at: Example of LIVE Bald Eagle Nest Camera in Iowa So, it seems to me that a company like Comcast/NBC would take advantage of this opportunity-- they already have the hardware and communication infrastructure to transmit the signal from a nest camera and host it on a web page with advertising that would likely pay for the marginal costs they incur and even turn a profit. After all, they could use their own equipment and personnel to service and maintain the camera. I do not know whether the Steering Committee has any interest in continuing efforts to install a nest camera. If they do, they cannot wait until next October to begin action on the project as happened last year. I do not know how much support there would be for continuing to push for the camera. The last Committee meeting was almost a year ago-- March 25, 2010 to be exact, so I have no idea as to how the other members of the Committee feel about this. If anything is to be done, the groundwork must be laid now, and action must begin before the rains turn the eagle woods into a swamp by mid-summer. By late October, the birds are already on territory and beginning to fix up the nest. I have explored other camera operations and never heard back from one on the Mississippi River in Illinois and the Osprey camera in Dunedin. Others I know about have been funded by power companies, TV stations, a security firm, educational institutions as well as civic entities and conservation foundations-- often a combination of these resources. The bottom line is whether there is enough public interest in having a nest camera to justify continued efforts to obtain it. (You asked me what time it was and I told you how to build a watch)","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Should-efforts-to-install-a-nest-camera-be-continued-Opinion-no-eagle-sightings-td6086331.html","images":0},{"id":"5893416","topic":"5893416","order":1,"title":"Saw both eagles this morning JAN 5th","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-01-05T15:18:52.024000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"Mary Lou and I arrived at the nest site around 9:15 AM. The nest appeared unoccupied, but we saw one eagle roosting on the dead Melaleucas to the west. I went over to photograph the roosting bird. Based upon its rather bulky appearance and the absence of any dark spots on its tail, I believe it to be the female. Her bill seems to appear bigger at the base, but that has not been a reliable indicator of the female when we made \"double blind\" measurements of the beaks of bot birds in the past. In the meantime, Mary Lou continued to observe the nest, and after about 15 minutes she saw the head of the other adult over the nest rim. The eagle on the nest repositioned on the nest and promptly settled down out of sight. When I got back I still could not see the bird on the nest. Because of the uncertainty about when the first egg was laid (between December 4 - 13), the 5 week incubation period could be completed as early as January 8, or as late as January 17. Beginning this coming weekend, we should be alert to changes in behavior that indicate that an egg has hatched: --The sitting bird switches from incubating very low to brooding a bit higher in the nest; --One or both adults may spend time peering down into the nest; --Adults begin bringing more food to the nest and spend time tearing at it and reaching down to feed an eaglet One or more eaglets may become visible over the rim of the nest when 2 to 3 weeks old.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Saw-both-eagles-this-morning-JAN-5th-td5893416.html","images":3},{"id":"7574575","topic":"7574575","order":1,"title":"SEP 10: All three eagles over west Miramar","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2016-09-11T11:05:22.518000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"The eagles are flying over to Sunset Lakes area almost every morning.
