The female (Jewel) often flew up to the support branch just to the right of the nest and sometimes pulled on green twigs. Some greens were among the nest materials they were rearranging, as seen in this photo. Jewel is on the left: Here Pride is working to place a stick, under Jewel's watchful eye: Jewel's tail is almost pure white on the top, with barely visible brown feather tips. However, from below her tail shows two prominent dark feather shafts and the tips appear darker. She also has speckling on her rump and undertail coverts. When I arrived only 1 adult was present.....on the nest.....but up high with the wings visible, clearly not in an incubating position (but it was warm today) It was looking around, occasionally down in to the nest as Jim's pictures so beautifully illustrate! For 1 1/2 hours there was no feeding....nothing. All of a sudden the nest adult began calling very loudly and flew to the maleleucas where the other adult flew in. They perched in separate trees very briefly....still calling. One eagle flew back to the nest and a few minutes later the other adult flew off towards the south. Tom was at the maleleucas and we never determined which adult flew back to the nest. We assume they changed shifts....but can't be certain and also saw no feeding behavior at the nest. After 2 hrs of watching 1 adult was back on the nest, up high, this time in the back as apposed to the front previously. Several watchers stopped by and we filled them in on the activity and they observed for several minutes with us. They were thrilled to look at the images on our cameras and see the adult on the nest! I really miss seeing the old gang there together....we need to plan a time to all meet!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-16-Jan-2011-td5929722.html","images":0},{"id":"5937325","topic":"5929722","order":2,"title":"Re: Sunday, 16 Jan 2011....??????","author":"Trisha","date":"2011-01-18T16:40:40.300000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"After reading that the newly hatched eaglets do not need the parents to feed them for 48hrs.....I feel really sure.....(and confirmed by the other watchers) that the eggs are hatching. There was a lot of looking down into the nest, the whole time I was there the bird that was on the nest sat high in the nest, I could easily see its head and neck. I thought it unusual that the bird would sit that high when it was pouring rain. When I arrived at 10:17am that day I saw the two eagles, one was in the nest and the other perched above and to the right of the nest, from my vantage point that you recommended. Great spot by the way! Then about 15 minutes after I got there the bird in the tree above the nest flew away. I continued to watch the bird on the nest, it sat high, and was looking down a lot. Then around 45 minutes later the other eagle returned, I heard them calling to each other, and it flew directly into the nest, it flew right over my car and into the nest. It was still raining, I bungled the settings on my new camera that I am learning to use, so I missed the shot and video that I took :( I was hoping to enlarge it to better see what went on. Ah well, next time. I think that because the eagle that was above the nest, when I arrived, came back after a short time, it looks to me that there might be some feeding going on. I believe there was an exchange of duties at that time as well. I also thought that I saw the grown chicks from last year fly over the nest. Again it was raining and difficult to tell. Would the adults allow other birds to fly low over the nest, and if not, would they allow previous chicks to fly over? I wonder how many chicks there will be this year? Hurricane Irma caused damage or loss of the insulator caps and conductor covers which had been in place since FPL installed them shortly after they learned of the nest. This photo, which I took back in 2009 shows the unprotected high voltage lines which run about 150 feet in front of the eagle nest. Given their 8 foot wingspan, eagles could easily complete a circuit if they fly into them or roost on a lower strand. Electrocution and vehicle collisions are the major causes of death of juvenile urban eagles.Note the eagle flying in the distance, as well as the yellow spirals installed to increase the visibility of the wires: Here is an example of the raptor protectors on one side of a power pole west of the nest site, as it appeared on November 1, 2017. One or more eaglets has hatched at the nest, and I am concerned that while they are learning to fly (in about 2 months from now) they may try to land on top of the power poles. I am not entirely knowledgeable about the subject, but believe that the conductor covers and insulator caps, (perhaps along with deterrent guards) may reduce the chance of electrocution. I have seen the fledgling eagles land on the top of the poles and even (briefly) on the top wire. FPL has been very careful to avoid disturbance of the nest. They installed the yellow spiral attachments \"curley-Q's\" which enhance visibility of the wires. This step alone was one of the most important ways to protect the eagles. I am sure FPL still has much work to undo the damage inflicted by the hurricane. Hopefully they may be able to take steps to reduce the danger to the eaglets by the time they fledge.. Ireached out to the Broward Area Coordinator, FPL Power Systems Environmental. They will look into the matter. Paradoxically, the Bald Eagle protection guidelines discourage disturbance in the vicinity of the nest, so the FPL must determine whether the raptor guards are indicated and evaluate whether any disturbance to the eagles is justified. Eagles are very unlikely to abandon a nest with eaglets. This pair is quite accustomed to disturbance. However in a month or so the eaglet(s) may be branching and helicoptering, and could fall to the ground if distracted. I believe that the pole in the very front of the nest may have a protective cap on the top insulator, the one most likely to come in contact with an eagle if it decides to perch on top of the pole. The two other insulators appear to be bare and there are no covers over the electrical conduction wires. The pole just to the east appears not to have any protection on the insulators or the conductors. Here is a photo of raptor guard insulator caps with conductor wire covers as installed presently on an FPL distribution line in Miramar (taken this morning). Note these raptor guards consisting of protective caps on the insulators, along with tubular conductor covers which extend along the wires from the poles. They also have triangular \"excluders\" to discourage large birds from roosting on the crossbars:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Raptor-excluders-not-yet-installed-on-power-lines-in-front-of-nest-td7574844.html","images":3},{"id":"7574852","topic":"7574844","order":2,"title":"FPL emergency work will include installation of raptor guards!","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-02-10T10:29:12.075000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"Shawnlei Breeding, Program Manager for Florida Audubon EagleWatch wrote with some good news. The work is scheduled for tomorrow morning. They will do some initial low noise groundwork to prepare the site and then will have to do a little bit of aerial work that shouldn’t last longer than 10-15 minutes. They will have a monitor on site to observe the eagles as always. This is coincidentally the same pole you were concerned about that had lost the raptor guards. FPL is taking advantage of this opportunity to have the technicians put the guards on the pole while they are up there doing their other work, so that’s good!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Raptor-excluders-not-yet-installed-on-power-lines-in-front-of-nest-td7574844.html","images":0},{"id":"7574853","topic":"7574844","order":3,"title":"Re: Raptor guard installed","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-02-12T05:19:36.891000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"FPL has installed insulator covers on the top two wires of the power pole directly in front of the nest. Stopped by the nest at about 10 AM this morning and met Luis and Phil. The latter had been there for at least 2 hours. He reported that the new female was there with the male around 8:15. He also saw both the prior morning and is sure of the ID of the female. An adult was roosting on the horizontal branch above and to the left of the nest, the spot smoetimes used by the new female. (I will temporarily call her \"Newfee\" or Newf? as she will get a permanent name if she settles down at this nest and, besides, will not be \"new\" any more ) This eagle has the tapered shape of the male bird (Pride) (rather than Joy's \"pear\" shape but interestingly enough he is hanging one foot. We have seen this habit before in both of the adults but never with the leg hanging down in flight or with toes extended as has been documented in the case with Joy. All of my observation occurred over a hour's time. It's often an opportunity for good BIF pics given the observations are from the north as the wind direction -- there is a better chance the eagles will launch into the wind toward the camera. And as it happened, I was able to snap a few of both the female and male leaving perches from: overhead, east, and west of the nest. When I first arrived the female was flying away from a perch somewhere beneath the nest. After a circle that took her east then back close to the nest, she landed on a branch above the nest as shown in the first pic. The particular picture shown shows the male calling to the female as he looks up at her. (I can only imagine he is thinking it’s her turn back on the nest.) After a short while and additional “bird discussions,” sure enough the female flew around again from her perch above the nest and landed in the nest. It was difficult to actually see the swap of duties, as within just a few moments, the male left and appeared at their favorite perch east of the nest in an Australian Pine. The male stayed for a spell and then flew around in the local area. He crossed the road north and headed over the homes and then came back shortly. I believe he went by the nest on his return, but did not stop until he landed in the dead melaluca trees. Soon the male left the trees and headed south. I have included some pics of the tail feathers as I have based my comments about female and male from identifying the male with dark colorations on the tips of his tail feathers. So far I haven’t noted anything especially distinctive otherwise, other than size which is hard to determine if they aren’t together. The wind was blowing briskly and she had trouble balancing and returned to the nest, where she rearranged some sticks. Within a minute or so the male flew in and joined her on the nest. The female tried to move a stick but the male was standing on it. He finally got the idea and help her reposition the stick. They posed nicely, then began eating some prey. The male may have just brought it to the nest. The female flew off to the west, and then the male prepared to follow her. The female roosted on one of the dead melaleucas to the west. They were quite alert. We heard the sound of someone/something moving in the woods under the nest. Both eagles flew up and circled the nest tree several times, finally roosting on the nest tree to the right and above the nest-- the male on the usual horizontal limb, and the female about 10 feet above him. The we saw the cause of the disturbance-- it turned out to be an authorized environmental scientist who was doing work for the SFWMD. There are new survey posts with red flags all along the fence line in front of the nest. Work was scheduled to begin soon on the resurfacing of Pines Boulevard and construction of a sidewalk in front of the nest, but I am not sure of the significance of either the survey or the environmental assessment. The FDOT has briefed the Pembroke Pines Mayor's Bald Eagle Sanctuary Committee and assured us they will abide by the State and Federal guidelines that prevent unnecessary disturbance of a Bald Eagle nest during breeding season. Generally, disturbances within 330 feet of the nest are restricted, to the extent that they exceed any ongoing disturbances. The southern edge of Pines Boulevard pavement is about 150 feet from the eagle nest. The eagles have tolerated the traffic noise, grass cutting on the swale, work on the power lines and nearby trees, emergency vehicle sirens, and of course, pedestrians and onlookers. Bad News.... Jorge, this would be very bad news but also very unusual. Only something like poisoning or serious injury would be expected to kill an older eaglet in the nest. Can you be sure it was the body of a dead eaglet? Could it have been prey remains? It is not unusual for a newly-fledged eaglet to disappear for a day or two-- or even three days as we had happen. Time will tell. If so, hunger will drive the eaglet to return to the nest as that is the only way the adults can efficiently feed more than one. They will continue to drop prey in the nest. Even if it does not have great flight power, the eaglet can \"ladder\" up from low branches to ever taller ones to reach the nest. U.S. Magistrate Judge Gregory J. Kelly also ordered Kristopher Graham, 28, to perform 75 hours of community service at a local Audubon Society center as part of violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Graham's company, Graham Brothers Construction Inc., along with Specialized Services Inc., was working at a residential real estate development site in Sanford in January 2005 when employees noticed a nest and at least two bald eagles, according to court records. But Graham and representatives from the other company, however, agreed to let workers from a development company use their heavy equipment to destroy the tree and nest on Jan. 21, 2005, according to court records. Soon he flew to a branch on the right, then jumped into the nest, where he flapped and helicoptered. The breeze was intermittent and variable, so it was difficult to find a good view of the nest with all the trees moving in front. Neither the older eaglet (PP7) nor the adults were in sight. We watched for almost an hour, then went back to the car. We had just sat down when an adult came in from the west carrying indeterminate prey. Mary Lou stayed in the car while I grabbed my camera and hurried back to the nest. PP8 was on the nest eating, but the adult must have exited to the back of the nest after dropping the prey. We then found the adult roosting on a Melaleuca snag to the west of the nest, cleaning its bill. I think it was the female. If PP7 had been in the area she would almost certainly have come to the nest for food, so I suppose she is somewhere else. In past years we have noted that the youngsters can fly quite capably within a day or so after returning to the nest. Generally, for the first week or two after fledging, we also would expect PP7 spend the night on the nest with her nest-mate. PP8 should be taking his first flight within a day or so. Immature birds are more likely to move more to the north after the nesting season. Was this an adult bird that you believe you saw? If so, the only large raptor that it might be confused with is the Osprey, especially if the Osprey is roosting at a distance and its white undersides and dark tail are not visible-- this sometimes gives the appearance of the white head of an eagle. In flight, the Osprey looks quite distinctive-- slim, flaps more, and has lots of white underneath and wings bent at \"elbows.\" Since yours was flying you are very likely correct in your identification, if you saw thewhite head and tail of an adult bird. Sometimes a vulture is mistaken for an immature eagle, as both are dark. Note that both Black and Turkey Vultures have quite small heads, and both soar with their wings elevated somewhat in a \"V\" shape (dihedral). Vultures tend \"tilt\" as they soar. This is an adaptation that permits them to soar very slowly, which causes one or the other of their wings to often lose lift (stall). The dihedral allows them to quickly recover from such stalls, as the other wing can quickly compensate and rotate the vulture's body into proper alignment. (\"V-wings\" are also an adaptation in birds that fly low, as a stall can cause them to crash. Note that harriers, nighthawks Golden Eagles and many sea birds exhibit this feature). Bald Eagles soar with quite flat wings, and do not \"wobble\" or tilt in flight. I will enter your sighting into the \"Eagle Milestones\" spreadsheet as an adult Bald Eagle, and will share your report with other Eagle Watch observers.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sighting-at-Tradewinds-Park-td5327497.html","images":0},{"id":"4706199","topic":"4706199","order":1,"title":"The THREE EAGLETS HAVE NAMES","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-03-09T19:22:09.310000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"The Silver Trail Middle School students considered names for the eaglets, and nominated 5 sets of names that were in the running for the 2009-2010 breeding season triplets.
