I guess that was you, Michele, arriving as I was carrying my gear to the car. At 9:20, there was a light drizzle and both chicks were standing straight up. One adult was in the dead trees. The rain gradually got heavier and by 10:00, it was really coming down hard. The chicks hunkered down and were not visible and both adults were in the dead trees just standing there getting rained on. At 10:30, the rain stopped and both chicks stood up. They looked so funny while they were soaking wet... almost unrecognizable. They just stood and looked around until they were mostly dry. Then, they started the wing flapping and hopping. Occasionally, the chicks snacked on some leftovers from an earlier feeding. I saw one chick rubbing his beak and possibly licking the nest material (sticks). I was thinking that maybe he was drinking some of the rain water, but I don't know if eaglets do that. Once, a chick decided to start jumping up and down and he did it right on top of the other chick who appeared to be trying to take a nap or just rest. The one being jumped on stood up and beaked the jumping one a couple of times. It seems like progress is being made. At least we have someone with the city who is aware of the nest. I was wondering what Brian's [referring to Brian Mealey, the eagle researcher] impressions of the nest were? Did he think he'd be able to put a radio on this pair's offspring? I looked at his website today < http://www.instwildlifesciences.org/ >and it seemed that the eaglet NBC6 may be out of the picture - no transmisisons for some time. Maybe NBC6, the news station, would be interested in sponsoring this nest, especially since it is located so close to their offices in Miramar. = = = = = Hi, Kelly-- Brian thought it would be possible to put a transmitter on an eaglet in the PP nest. He said they would need to use climbing gear, and that it was quite high up. He was looking for a major branch that was higher than the nest. He said one was there. They shoot a small line up and then pull up a rope. They would not have to bring in a cherry picker that would need a road right up to the nest, but the nest is too high for one, anyway. Good point about NBC6. I just e-mailed them for their information (marketing dept as well as community news and Web services), with a link to the eagle web page. I apologize for the poor quality of the photos, but the area for viewing was moved back this year, which has made it safer for the eagles as well as for the public. If you look closely, you can see all 3. The one on the left is behind the branch with only the beak showing well. Since they are now so large and the trees have grown up around the nest, it's hard to see all 3. Shots are also made more difficult with the wind blowing the foreground branches and the fact that the \"watch area\" has been moved back this year. An amazing sight none the less! David Anthony and Mike Myers, environmental consultants with Passerella and Associates of Fort Myers, have been monitoring the nest for the past few weeks. The company was hired to monitor the eagles after the contractor found he couldn't complete the project by the time eagle nesting season began. \"They have been flying around in the area and getting branches and bringing them back,\" Anthony said. \"The framework of the nest is starting to fill in now. They would fly right though the trees along the edge of the construction site. They didn't seem at all intimidated by all the activity there.\" The city bought the 18.3-acre parcel on the southwest side of the Imperial River by U.S. 41 for about $2 million in 2005. Compass Construction Inc. of Cape Coral is taking care of phase one, which includes a boardwalk through wetlands, a canoe and kayak launch and a boat dock. The $635,000 project, paid for with tourist development dollars, began in the spring. Phase two will include a pavilion, restrooms and landscaping. Walk said that phase - which has no set time to begin - will cost about $1.5 million. The project was contracted to be completed by Sept. 15. But rain postponed the work. Walk then hoped to have it done by Sept. 30, but this past weekend brought more heavy rain and further delays. Most of the work on phase one is complete. The only thing left is grading the loop road and putting a shell surface on it. \"If we just had a few days of hot sunny weather, it would sure help,\" Walk said. \"We're getting close.\" Anthony watches the eagles for four hours a day, three times a week, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service criteria. He uses a spotting scope and binoculars to check if any activity disturbs the birds. Myers said the eagles would give a distress call and flush if they were disturbed - and they haven't done that yet. \"There are eagles that are more habituated to activity,\" Myers said. \"We are seeing that more and more with urban eagles that have constructed their nests in more urban areas. Based on our experience they seem to be more tolerant with nearby activities.\" Walk is glad the eagles aren't affected by construction. If the eagles show distress, construction would have to halt until nesting season ends - May 15. \"They seem pretty much unaffected by what is going on there,\" Walk said. \"If this continues, we can work past Oct. 1 if necessary. I think we have to play it day by day and see what happens.\" More relaxed rules make construction of the park possible. No construction was allowed within 750 feet of an eagle's nest during nesting season when the bald eagle was on the endangered species list. But the American bald eagle was removed from that list in June 2007 and is now protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Those acts don't have specific building boundaries. They recommend construction be kept at distances ranging from 340 feet to 660 feet depending on the site. Walk believes current construction is at least 600 feet from the nest.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagles-seem-tolerant-of-Bonita-park-construction-td5595862.html","images":0},{"id":"7573307","topic":"7573307","order":1,"title":"Plumage stages of Bald Eagles","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-01-08T10:44:10.860000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"The successive plumage stages of Bald Eagles can be confusing. When I see an immature it is interesting to determine its age so I usually try to match it up with the patterns in the field guides. From watching the local nest we are rather familiar with the fledgling eaglets' first plumage. At first, the young bird looks larger than the adult. It may actually weigh more, but this appearance is enhanced by the fact that the tail and flight feathers are actually longer than those of the adult. This assists the bird as it learns to fly, and gives its wings a broader (I call it \"floppy\" look). The newly fledged eaglet is quite dark brown all over. The head and upper neck are usually uniformly brown. We note that its eyes are dark and its beak and cere are black. Older birds have narrower wings and shorter tails and vary in the amount and distribution of white in their plumage, and their eye and beak colors change with age. The field guide illustrations are not always distinctive, and It can be difficult to know what is meant by \"age\" when the earlier stages are illustrated. I found useful descriptive information in Clark & Wheeler's Peterson Field Guide \"Hawks.\" It classifies the plumage molting stages as: Immature, White-belly I, White-belly II, Adult Transition, and Adult , briefly summarized as follows: Immature: (from fledging until almost a year old) \"First Year\" Head uniform dark brown Beak and cere black Eyes dark brown Back tawny brown, contrasts with darker flight feathers, some with whitish wash Breast dark brown, usually contrasts with paler belly Belly may have white streaking especially where breast and belly meet Wing secondaries longer than adult Tail longer than adult and dark White-belly I (from 1 to 2 years old) \"Second Year\" Molt begins in their first spring \"almost a year old\" -- (keep in mind that south Florida birds are then over a year old) Head brown with lighter superciliary line Eyes lighter brown to amber Beak slaty color, cere lighter Back shows more white, an upside down triangle Breast mostly dark brown bib contrasts with belly, Belly white with variable number of short dark streaks Wings a few flight feathers replaced; new shorter secondaries Tail molt complete, shorter White-belly II (from 2 to 3 years old) \"Third Year\" At 2 years of age they are similar to previous stage except that Head has larger whiter superciliary line, cheek and throat whitish Eyes whitish yellow Beak lighter with dirty yellowish spots, cere more yellow Back has upside-down white triangle Breast bib is distinct Belly white with dark streaks Wings narrower with a few older long secondaries remaining Tail short as in adult Adult Transition (attained at age 3 and highly variable) \"Fourth Year\" Head lightens, especial towards top but no as much down the neck Body darkens Eyes pale yellow Beak and cere orange-yellow Wings retain some white underneath and in \"armpits\" Tail remains dark until spring of 5th year Adult (over 4 years old and afterwards) \"Fifth Year\" Head white Tail and tail coverts white Body dark brown with light edges to feathers Beak and cere bright orange-yellow Eyes pale yellow For a year or more head may retain brown streaks and may have darker eye line like Osprey Tail has dark terminal band for first year in adult plumage","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Plumage-stages-of-Bald-Eagles-td7573307.html","images":0},{"id":"7573308","topic":"7573307","order":2,"title":"Re: Plumage stages of Bald Eagles","author":"Lisa G","date":"2014-01-09T23:26:30.753000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Great Information Ken will half to save this","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Plumage-stages-of-Bald-Eagles-td7573307.html","images":0},{"id":"7575384","topic":"7575384","order":1,"title":"OCT 29: Female scared off roost","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2019-10-29T12:03:57.190000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Just in from Phil Martin (October 29) His excellent photo is used with permission. Fernando arrived a while later and at 9:10 the adult flew away, followed later by the juvenile. We observed no activity in the nest or surrounding favorite perches. I tried to post when I arrived home around 11am and I couldn't get on the forum. There was just a blank, light blue screen. We saw a pretty bird, a very bright rust color across the entire top body and a white belly speckled or somewhat lined with brown. The new female was roosting just above the nest to the right and the male appeared to be picking at sticks. There was quite a bit of finer grasses such as nest lining material. Note that the female is resting on one foot, with the other hanging and clenched. The male then flew up and roosted just above the female. Then the male flew back down on the nest and the female immediately joined the male. There was a brief \"recognition ceremony,\" as they touched bills. Then they both started moving sticks, sometimes appearing to work together to move a large branch from the middle of the nest to the left rim. For a while the male just sat deep to the left and behind the female, almost invisible while she just stood on the nest. Note the comparison of their face patterns (male on left). The female's gape does appear to reach a bit farther under her eye, about halfway. Her forehead is higher and her brow ridge may be a bit lower in front of her eye than that of the male (giving her more of a \"frown\"), and her head is more round vs the angular appearance of the male.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MARCH-12-Both-eagles-on-nest-10-00-AM-td7574066.html","images":9},{"id":"7574067","topic":"7574066","order":2,"title":"Re: MARCH 12: Both eagles on nest 10:00 AM","author":"johnnye","date":"2015-03-12T17:46:53.847000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"One eagle at the nest at 3:55 today, March 12, resting on the branch just above and to the left as in your photos. Luis had been there earlier this morning before it rained and said Jewel was on the nest and that Pride brought in a branch. An interesting development-- we have learned that ownership of the light pole across Pines Boulevard from the nest had been transferred from FDOT to the City of Pembroke Pines some time ago. We initially believed that it was still under FDOT control. Since FDOT has considered the nest camera to be a cooperative venture with the City, this should not change the status of the envisioned project. FDOT is developing a cost estimate that will include the necessary equipment and installation of the camera, and hopefully a commitment for initial support of operating costs. If a wireless camera is to be used, a microwave antenna would need to be placed high on the pole in the same plane as a receiver that is linked to a broadband modem. There are many towers that might serve to host the receiver. Below is an example of one, in the parking lot of West Broward High School. It remains to be seen whether FPL and Comcast/NBC might be invited to participate by providing resources for services such as electric power, broadband service and web hosting. However, the role of the City in installing and maintaining the camera must first be worked out, and a host for the receiver and broadband connection needs to be identified. Possibilities would be a City, County, Community College or School Board facility, if not FDOT.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Pembroke-Pines-Eagle-Nest-Camera-Planning-Update-td6023344.html","images":1},{"id":"2586439","topic":"2586439","order":1,"title":"I will watch nest","author":"Kathy","date":"2009-04-04T17:02:09.812000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I will watch nest sunday from 10am to 1230 noon","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/I-will-watch-nest-td2586439.html","images":0},{"id":"2586897","topic":"2586439","order":2,"title":"Re: I will watch nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-04-04T19:39:50.240000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thank you, Kathy-- the more eyes on the nest, the better. He says the developers had to change the site plan when they realized there were eagles there, but he feels the development still drove them away. The area was named Eagle something because of the eagles that were there at the time. I can't remember what he told me. There are also eagles around a dump in Kendall and when he stopped and spoke to the guard at the gate, he was told there were [specific street address withheld] (inside the dump area) the day before he was there. Also, his teenaged son fishes somewhere down there and sees eagles. It seems south dade is doing there part in bringing back the eagles to their area. Greg is great with a camera, but not so good with a computer. I am trying to get him to join this forum. Do you have any hints as to how to post his photos here? He says he will try to go to the south dade nest this weekend. Hasn't been there in a while and he also wondered about how the wind was affecting the nest. The tree is very very tall. He has to stand a good deal away to get his pic because of the height of the tree. I will edit my post to correct my error. Australian Pines tend to grow fast and not commonly have flat platforms for eagle nests as do the native pines, but they are about the only pines of any size that are available in much of southeast Florida, as they have replaced the native trees. Melaleuca trees are generally unsuitable nesting trees for eagles. If your friend gives me permission I can post any photos he may wish to e-mail to me as attachments with descriptions. He may e-mail me at this link: Ken's e-mail However it is not too difficult to sign up for the FORUM. At the top of the page go to: \"SUBSCRIBE ANONYMOUSLY AT THIS LINK to receive e-mail copies of all posts to this FORUM, either individually or in Digest form. \" This will make a form pop up where you may choose a name and also a password. Becoming a \"Member\" allows you to post. You can elect to receive copies of all posts, as that is a good way to keep current on what is going on at the nest. Posting text photos is actually quite simple after you register. Choose : \"New Topic\" and a box will open where you can simply write a message. To post photos, choose the box above the message \"Insert Image.\" A box will pop up with two options, either to pick a photo from your own computer or one from a web site. Let's say you pick a photo that is on your computer. You browse to the folder which contains the photo and select the file. Before clicking on the second \"Insert Image\" at the bottom of the pop-up box, be sure to \"Resize\" the photo so that it fits the page. If you fail to do this the photo may be much bigger than the page. I usually select the Medium or Big size, both of which fit the page nicely. You can either just let the photo \"Float\" or have it move to the left margin of your post, which is what I always do. Picking photos from an Internet Web site is useful but they should be your own photos on photo sharing services such as FLICKR or Facebook. You simply choose the size photo you wish to send, and right-click it. You may need to first show the photo in a new window to be sure that you capture a JPG or JPEG image. Usually the image displayed on FLICKR or Facebook at first is not such an image and it cannot be posted on the FORUM. Right-click it and select \"Copy image URL\" -- do this and paste it in the second of the two boxes as described above, but be sure it ends in \".jpg\" Hope this helps!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/eagle-at-nest-10-10-4-15-4-30-td7573804.html","images":0},{"id":"7235295","topic":"7235295","order":1,"title":"Sunday afternoon 1:30pm to 2:30pm","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2012-01-29T20:25:18.111000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"I had a chance to go by the nest this afternoon after taking some time off. I could not discern what was the prey. After some tearing and feeding(?), the pair traded places and the female flew off to the dead tree strand to the west. It appeared to roost on the same single trunk tree which Ken photographed yesterday (very close to the front - closer than previous years.) Below are various photos of the day. Wonderful that they were able to speak to Mr. Fernandes as well!!! Two females, one male bald eagle fight over mating nest By Rodney Thrash, Times Staff Writer In Print: Wednesday, December 2, 2009 A bald eagle rests by the Fernandes’ pool after a beating from a combative female. A bald eagle rests by the Fernandes’ pool after a beating from a combative female. [RUSS FERNANDES | Special to the Times] PALM HARBOR — He's everything she's ever wanted in a man: distinguished, a caretaker, a homeowner. She'll do anything to get him, even if that means taking out his better half. That's exactly what the hussy tried to do Saturday, authorities said Tuesday. No, this isn't a recap of Fatal Attraction, the famous 1987 movie starring Glenn Close and Michael Douglas. And the characters aren't people. This love triangle is playing out in the trees above a Palm Harbor neighborhood. The parties involved? Bald eagles. According to officials at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland — eaglespeak for the hospital — the man-stealing flirt held the other bird down, plucked her feathers and almost killed her. The injured eagle weighed all of 9 pounds. \"Her chest looks like a Thanksgiving turkey — completely bare,\" said Lynda White, coordinator of the center's EagleWatch program. \"She is beat up. She is just a mess.\" No one knows if the male eagle was around at the time of the fight, but typically, mates don't come to one another's rescue, she said. It all happened Saturday afternoon in the back yard of Russ and Becky Fernandes. \"My dog was barking like crazy out back,\" Russ Fernandes said. \"I went out and looked. The eagle was out on the ground.\" Bloodied and weak, she stood outside the lanai until he opened the screen door. Then she stumbled inside and into the pool. He fished her out and notified the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, an Indian Shores bird rescue organization that later transported the eagle to the center in Maitland. It will be several months before the eagle's feathers grow back and the center releases her. That's a good thing. \"She'd just get her rear beat up again probably,\" White said. Reports of eagle fights increase this time of year. Nesting season, which started Oct. 1, doesn't end until May 15. During that time, the birds jockey for places to live. In Pinellas County, where development has paved over habitats as the eagle population has soared, the problem is even more acute. \"The birds in Pinellas are suffering from loss of habitat,\" White said. \"That's why you have so many eagles there nesting on cell towers. It's crazy compared to the rest of the state. We have seen a steady increase in territory fights as population increases and territory decreases and I think that this is a classic example of that.\" The offending eagle is still on the lam and has shown no signs of remorse. Three times since Saturday's nearly fatal fight, she has tried to move into the injured eagle's home, said Barb Walker, a local volunteer with the Audubon of Florida EagleWatch program and one of the first people Fernandes called. \"She wants that nest, that house, that man,\" she said. Added White: \"She's probably thinking to herself, 'Why should she go out and find a mate from scratch when she's found a ready made home for herself?' \" So far, the male eagle has rebuffed the young lady's advances. And now, they're going at it, too. Despite the domestic squabbling, she still wants him. \"She tries to fly to the nest and he won't let her in,\" Walker said. \"He's fighting her off and chasing her out of the natal territory. It's a real drama playing out over there.\" Drama seems to follow the injured eagle. Someone shot her in January 1996, fractured her right ulna and punctured her femur. She was so badly injured that the Audubon center kept her for two years while she recuperated and regained her strength. The center released her 6 miles northwest of Brooksville on Feb. 24, 1998. \"We hadn't heard from her since,\" the center's Dianna Flynt said in an e-mail Sunday to Walker. White said the male eagle can only fend off the female's advances for so long. Eagles take turns incubating. While one sits on the eggs, the other feeds itself, returns to the nest and exchanges roles. \"Raising chicks is a two-parent job and this bird cannot continue to feed itself and keep the eggs warm,\" she said. \"I wouldn't be surprised if he finally realizes this would be a lot easier if he had help. I'm thinking he's going to get really tired of this routine very quickly and she will move in.\" \"They live these soap opera lives,\" Walker said. \"It's almost as if they were people.\" Rodney Thrash can be reached at [email withheld] or [phone withheld]. In looking at the figures it certainly isn't surprising that we are seeing so much conflict. 03/04 - 23 04/05 - 15 05/06 - 18 06/07 - 27 07/08 - 11 08/09 - 23 There was another fight on the east side of Lake Tarpon this afternoon as well. The two eagles fought and then landed in a friend of mine's backyard. There were feathers flying and the two eagles rested there on the ground for approximately a half an hour. This was about 4/10's of a mile from the Lansbrook nest which can only be surveyed by boat or air. For wild creatures, the survival instinct extends beyond the individual to its progeny. The male defends his genetic line, while the female would almost surely destroy the eggs immediately if she could overcome and woo him. All too often we interpret the behavior of wild things in human terms. By definition, only humans can be \"inhumane.\" In Wikipedia we find: \"Humane in early use meant civil, courteous or obliging towards humans and animals. In modern times it is characterized by sympathy with or consideration, compassion and benevolence for others, especially for the suffering or distressed.\" Also, \"Humans are innately inhumane; this explains much of the misery and suffering in the world.\" Early naturalists often classified wild creatures as either \"good\" or \"bad,\" usually in terms of how they affected human interests such as farming, ranching, hunting and fishing. Arguments for and against persecution of \"bad\" animals often relied upon the effect they had on other \"good\" and \"bad\" creatures. Thus, the \"bad\" hawk that took chickens may have been partially redeemed because it killed \"bad\" rodents. Forgotten is the inherent complex and violent struggle within the Web of Life. When the Bald Eagle was selected as our National Symbol, the founding fathers overlooked some of its \"bad\" traits, and mostly considered its appearance. Catherine Raven, in Beauty is Only Feather Deep asks, \"Was the bald eagle really the best choice of national symbol? A closer look at the habits and evolutionary lineage of this American icon casts doubt.\" Raven describes a group of tourists in Yellowstone National Park as they admired the flight of a Bald Eagle high overhead, being pursued by a raven. A protracted fight ensued during which time the relatively small raven demonstrated agility, tenacity, and bravery (a judgment that any bird expert would confirm as unbiased, my surname notwithstanding). The bald eagle demonstrated the better part of valor and fled. She celebrates the raven's victory, and muses: [H]ad I shown up 200 years earlier, when the only people in the valley were Indians. In those days, a person could choose to raise a hand to honor either the raven's skillfulness or the bald eagle's beauty. But the most revered bird in this area would likely have been the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). Countless natives probably rode through this valley with golden eagles painted on their horses. Today, tourists ride through with bald eagles painted on their motorcycles. Raven quotes Arthur Cleveland Bent, from his 1937 classic, Life Histories of North American Birds of Prey : \"A fine-looking bird,\" Bent writes of the bald eagle, but \"hardly worthy of the distinction [of being the national emblem]. Its carrion-feeding habit, its timid and cowardly behavior, and its predatory attacks on the smaller and weaker osprey hardly inspire respect.\" Bent's baldies-behaving-badly exposé also reveals that our nation's icon relishes vulture vomit. It's not that they find the vomit lying around; rather, they seek out vultures and force them to vomit. Then they eat the regurgitate. \"Our national bird may still be admired,\" Bent suggests, \"by those who are not familiar with its habits.\" Raven continues: The transfer of allegiances [away from the Golden Eagle and the Wild Turkey] began with Thomas Jefferson, who appointed the bald eagle to serve as the national emblem for the new American nation. It was a classic example of the outdated practice of physiognomy. Now considered a pseudoscience and an excuse for racism, advocates of physiognomy held that a person or animal's true nature was revealed by its outward appearance. Because of its white head and yellow eyes, physiognomists concluded that the bald eagle was fierce and noble. To his credit, Benjamin Franklin, the scientist, rejected this false logic, recognizing that the baldie was, in fact, a pirate and worse still, a \"rank coward, commonly fleeing birds the size of sparrows.\" Franklin suggested that the turkey, a bird of many virtues, be used for the emblem instead. But Franklin's arguments didn't prevail: It seems our young nation was more concerned with symbolism than natural history, and the turkey had less charisma than the eagle. Follow this link to Catherine Raven's full essay, in which she explains how its fine appearance saved the Bald Eagle from extinction in the lower 48 states. The page includes a fanciful rendition of the Great Seal of the United States, as it would look if the Wild Turkey had won out over the Bald Eagle. In Life Histories , Bent extols the Golden Eagle's beauty: This magnificent eagle has long been named the King of Birds, and it well deserves the title. It is majestic in flight, regal in appearance, dignified in manner, and crowned with a shower of golden hackles about its royal head. When falconry flourished in Europe the golden eagle was flown only by kings. Its hunting is like that of the noble falcons, clean, spirited, and dashing. It is a far nobler bird in every way than the bald eagle and might well have been chosen as our national emblem. But then the golden eagle is not a strictly American bird, as the bald eagle is. We don't think twice when a robin pulls up a worm, or an Osprey catches a fish, but the predator-prey relationship can stir up strong emotions, from pity for the victim, to anger and even hate for the aggressor. The following video is not for the faint-hearted, or to those who find it hard to accept violence, so be forewarned. A Golden Eagle displays remarkable hunting strategy, preying on mountain goats much larger than itself by throwing them off the cliff face. Remarkably, the goats aggressively defend their kids. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ4HCwKXuVM","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Palm-Harbor-FL-Two-females-one-male-bald-eagle-fight-over-mating-nest-td4100297.html","images":0},{"id":"4108023","topic":"4100297","order":6,"title":"Re: Palm Harbor, FL: Two females, one male bald eagle fight over mating nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-12-03T13:54:09.491000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Lynda White responded to my post: The male will eventually give in to the urge to successfully rear young. This eagle also reportedly spent two years at the Audubon’s Maitland facility in the late 1990s after being shot. The rescued eagle looks plucked after its fight with another female. Full story PALM HARBOR The bald eagle who was plucked from her nest and pummeled by a home-wrecking flirt in November is on the mend. According to an official at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, the eagle's chest no longer looks like a Thanksgiving turkey. \"Well, I would say that she looks like the Rogaine is working,\" said Lynda White, coordinator of the center's EagleWatch program. \"Most of her feathers have begun growing back.\" That's a good thing, she said. Not only are they used for flying, chest feathers keep eagles insulated. \"Like now,\" White said, \"when the weather is so cold. The birds use those feathers to keep them warm.\" The eagle was in bad shape when she arrived at the center after a lover's quarrel in a Palm Harbor neighborhood. As recently as December, White estimated it would be several months before the feathers grew back. The bird is recovering ahead of schedule, White said, but she isn't in the clear. There are still two areas of concern: deep puncture wounds on her beak and on her leg. \"They are healing, but it's been a slow process,\" White said. \"She still needs daily care, so she will be in the clinic for a while longer before being sent outside to rehab.\" On Rolling Woods Drive, where the soap opera played out, EagleWatchers continue to keep an eye on developments at the nest. \"There have been reports that the male eagle is attempting to bond with a younger female,\" said Barb Walker, a local volunteer with the Audubon of Florida EagleWatch program. She doesn't know if that younger bird is the same eagle that almost killed the injured one. \"After the fight, there were several suitors,\" Walker said. \"I don't know that it's going real strong for them.\" Friday morning, she said, the male bird was alone. \"When eagles are courting, they go through an amazing display,\" Walker said. \"We haven't seen the bonding that we'd see: perching together, beak rubbing. There has not been any courtship display.\" Rodney Thrash can be reached at [email withheld] or [phone withheld]. Counting backwards 5 weeks (35 days) establishes February 10 as the approximate day the first egg was laid. This is also borne out in retrospect, based upon suspicions of observers who reported behavior of the pair on or about that date. Therefore we may assume that the oldest eaglet is about 45 days old. Referring to the summary of past broods, the first eaglet fledges at an average age of about 75 days (range of 62 to 86 days). Therefore we should expect its first flight around 3-4 weeks from now, with branching and helicoptering beginning about a week sooner.
