For the first ten minutes there was light drizzle. It was overcast, breezy and the temperature was a cool 59 degrees. When we got there, an eagle was roosting on one of the melaleuca snags west of the \"Eagle Forest.\" Within minutes, it flew towards us and passed between our position at the \"End School Zone\" sign and the nest, continuing east and then turning to the south, disappearing along 208th Avenue. For the first 25 minutes we saw no sign of the other bird, but were quite confident that it was incubating the eggs. Sure enough, it finally poked its head up a few times. We had never seen the pair exchange incubation duties, and we hoped that this would be the day, but the bird on the nest remained low and alone until we finally departed. We heard no vocalizations. The traffic was moderate to light, as today was a school holiday and no buses were delivering students to the high school.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Update-34th-Day-of-Incubation-td2168727.html","images":0},{"id":"7574963","topic":"7574963","order":1,"title":"APR 13: Eaglet and female on nest tree","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-04-14T06:12:06.673000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"Thanks to Phil Martin for keeping us up to date during this critical period as the eaglet is gaining skills. Bothered again by two mockers, it soon flew westward out of sight. The nest was empty as I passed it. At 209 Ave., there were no eagles visible. But as I walked further west, I saw both adults deep in the maleleucas due south of the School Crossing sign which is about 100 yards west of 209th. The adults were close together. At that distance they appeared to be 10-15 feet apart, however, one of them could have been further back than the other - - hard to tell. 6:30 am: One eaglet sat on a dead maleleuca much closer to the road about even with 209th Ave. And by then, the other juvenile was in the nest. I rolled about two minutes of video before it flew off to the east. It did a short circle then landed in the pine tree near the power lines, about 50 yards east of our nest-viewing site. It was joined in less than a minute by the other eaglet. A few more minutes of video captured the continuing assault by mockers and grackles, until first one and then the other eagle flew away. 6:50 am, after checking the entire area, all four eagles had flown out of sight. I feel that very soon one of these sightings will be our last of Hope and Justice. The adults may return in Nov. or Dec., but Hope and Justice remain only as memories, sharpened by the excellent photos captured by so many patient, dedicated photographers over these last few months. The younger eagles generally migrate north, usually along the Atlantic coast. Being less skillful at capturing prey, they may associate with vultures. Since cooler water holds more oxygen, fish go deeper during warm weather and are more difficult to catch. This is probably the reason why the younger birds head north to cooler waters. Interestingly, northern Bald Eagles of all ages fly south as lakes and rivers freeze up. Some Florida eagles travel as far as Chesapeake Bay. One from Palm Beach County was tracked up into New England. They return to the general area of their hatching around November or December.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eaglet-March-16th-and-pair-td7574891.html","images":0},{"id":"7574897","topic":"7574891","order":4,"title":"Re: Eaglet March 16th and pair","author":"naturegirl","date":"2018-03-19T09:48:17.401000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Very interesting will have to see how long the eaglet hangs around so far haven't seen him go past the edge of the nest and I think he or she is about 12 weeks based on the first pictures and mention of feeding. This first landing was awkward, but he held on. 7:27 am After a few tense minutes, he secured better footing and flew back to his original tree, about 18 feet directly above the nest. 7:29 am One parent flew into a nearby pine as the other flew into the nest with a fish. As the adult ate, Justice watched from above. 7:31 am The parent looked up, and in a few seconds Justice fell from his perch, right past the nest and landed in the understory below. I heard vigorous flapping for 3 or 4 seconds. Then, all was silent. I was very concerned. From my vantage point, I could not see Justice. 7:34 am The parent stopped eating the fish and seemed to be more focused on Justice below. 7:38 am By now, both parents had perched in separate trees above Justice. 7:40 am I called Ken with an update. Within five minutes a Mocker or Blue Jay flew on the branch above the nest and the Eagle took off to the Southwest. I took my chair out and sat in the median ( don't know if it's legal?) and around 7:45 the Eagle flew in from the Southeast and circled the front Pine trees with some nesting material ( i have poor pictures because of overcast skies) and left the material in the nest, the Eagle flew off once again to the Southwest after five minutes. At 8:00 it arrived again from the Southeast but flew directly to the nest it had some more nesting material and it seamed to be stomping it down with it's feet. It was overcast and dark, so I did not get very good shots.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-sighting-9-9-2014-7am-td7573613.html","images":2},{"id":"3215864","topic":"3215864","order":1,"title":"Summer Bald Eagle sightings, anywhere in Florida?","author":"Rosyfinch","date":"2009-07-06T21:18:33.525000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Barb Walker shared this video, saying that she loved it, and hopes that we do, too. Yesterday, the eaglet's call was heard when both adults came to the nest and tore at prey. This eaglet is not quite 8 weeks old, too young to get back up to the nest if it does fall out. Were the adults enticing it to return to the nest? Well, this morning we got out at the nest site at 7:45 and there was no sign of the eaglet and no adults were present. Then, at 8:00 we were so relieved to see the dark shape of the eaglet in the nest. It stuck its head up and remained visible for only one minute, then disappeared for another 15 minutes. It still has a little fuzzy white cap. We decided to depart to go birding at Chapel Trail. Just as I was getting in the car I heard the cry of the eaglet, looked up and sure enough an adult was on the nest, feeding it! Interestingly, the eaglet did not raise its head up to be fed. Perhaps it assumes a submissive position, much unlike the aggressiveness we have seen in the past when two or three eaglets competed to be fed. Since the adult stood on the left (east) rim of the nest it was obscured by branches. The wind was almost still. I tried to get a better view by moving to Mike Fossler's favorite vantage point, where the entire nest can be seen at once-- if the wind is right. This did not work, as there was no help from the wind to push those branches away. Here is the view from \"Mike's Spot.\" A white pigeon flew in and seemed relatively tame-- maybe one released at a wedding or funeral. I checked to see if any hawks were around, thinking it would make a nice meal for one. I returned to the car at 8:30 AM and after starting the motor glanced up at the bare tree where were have seen Merlins several times over the years. Sure enough, I had to kill the engine and grab the camera! The Merlin was about 175-200 feet away, so the images are soft. I did not stay to see if the Merlin caught a meal. Not many birds at Chapel Trail this morning, and the few we saw were not cooperative. The pasture next to the preserve was interesting, as there were several very young calves frolicking with the Cattle Egrets.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/March-9-Good-news-eaglet-is-OK-td7358784.html","images":7},{"id":"7358965","topic":"7358784","order":2,"title":"Re: March 9: Good news-- eaglet is OK","author":"Jill W","date":"2012-03-09T12:46:11.090000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Whew!! When I stopped by the nest last night I noticed what looked like a small, fuzzy object at the left rim of the nest. I looked and looked and looked for some kind of movement that could help me determine what, exactly, I was looking at, but, alas, I could detect no movement. I tried to imagine what it could be. It was quite a windy evening, and possibly I was looking at the wind filled, up lifted feathers of an eagle rump, or head? Or perhaps some tasty, fuzzy morsel was left at the edge of the nest in preparation for the happy event we are all eagerly awaiting? What ever it was, I don't think it had been there previously. I also was not able to detect any sign of an adult on the nest, however I know from past experiences that they can quite disappear below the edge of the nest for some length of time and just when I begin to wonder if something had drawn them out of the nest, I see it briefly rise, poke around at something in the bottom of the nest before quickly settling back down in a different position. I communicated with Lynda White, Eagle Watch coordinator, and she advised that the eagles will sit higher in the nest, once an egg has hatched. They do this as they try to keep the remaining egg incubated while at the same time not crush the new eaglet. I will be visiting the nest frequently these next few days! At no time could we see any eaglets, but we know there was at least one being fed. On our early morning walk I had an immature (appearing to be about 2 years old) fly over my head at about 1/2 hour after sunrise. It was flying low from west to east over the west Mirarmar wetlands about 1 1/2 mile SE of the nest. https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/659/32914378511_e582798637_b.jpg It made a turn to the north along SW 196th and disappeared, only to reappear flying back south with another eagle chasing it. The second eagle seemed to make a pass at the younger bird, seemingly driving it away. I could not determine the age of the new bird as it turned back immediately and disappeared to the north. On assumption that one may be incubating, I walked about trying to get views of the nest from different angles. I saw something white in the nest-- to the right were clearly remains of a white bird with dark markings, possibly an immature White Ibis. More towards the center were two more white spots that either represented more prey remains or the head and/or tail of an incubating adult. It was chilly (55 F) and there was a stiff NW breeze, so the nest was not visible except for short intervals. My photos were very bad. This shows the white areas: I had positioned the car in a spot with pretty good visibility. and at about 10:15 I got back into the car to keep warm. Almost immediately, I heard the calls of eagles-- I am quite sure there were two calling at once. An adult with pure white tail feathers flew in with a medium sized fish, but I could not see the nest as it landed. The next view I got was of an adult eating some prey to the right side. The other white areas were not visible. Had there been a prey drop, and the incoming bird flew away immediately undetected? Had the nest been vacant until the arrival of the adult with prey? I'm just not sure, though I favor the first assumption because of hearing what I believe were two eagles calling at once. After about a half hour, the adult settled down on the nest, rather high-- I do not know if it ever moved down low, as I had to leave, around 10:50. Again I apologize for the bad photos, but they do document the behavior, to some extent.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Observations-10-00AM-difficult-to-interpret-td5808820.html","images":4},{"id":"7574828","topic":"7574828","order":1,"title":"JAN 4: Incubating male","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-01-04T20:48:19.209000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"This morning (JAN 4) the male Pride was deep in the nest for the entire time I watched, between 10:00 - 10:30 AM. Lots of \"flying\" back and forth by mainly the larger chick, but both taking turns with the activity. The larger chick is definitely beginning to \"branch\" as it perched about a foot above the nest on the large branch supporting the nest that comes out toward the road. From here it would \"fly\" to the other large nest support branch the comes out towards the west on the nest's right side. It would only very briefly set down on this west branch and then fly right back to the nest. They took turns watching each other do their wing exercising. I think they have learned that if they both flap and jump at the same time there are scary results. They both stayed up on the nest with periods of standing, (the larger always on its new found perch slightly above the rim) and both spent time moving in side to side and circular paths over the nest. At about 10:30 an adult brought in a white bird and left the nest right away and went down to preen in the dead stand of trees. The larger chick grabbed the prey first and the smaller sat on the right and watched. When the smaller chick would try to get some fresh food its dominant sibling would open and close its beak as it faced its sibling....obviously saying \"buzz off.\" We noticed the smaller chick begin to edge closer after about 5-10 minutes of watching and it grabbed the carcass. The older chick didn't object at first and the smaller one was tugging and actually lifting the carcass up above the nest where we could clearly see it as it ate. At one point the larger sibling moved back in and grabbed the carcass and a tug of war ensued. It would have made for a great picture with a long lens. They both just kind of let the few skeletal remains drop eventually and went back to their lookout positions. I stayed until noon with the same pattern of standing and periods of exercising by the young. No adults were visible in any of their favorite spots. The eagles do not appear to be bothered by the observers, and it is unlikely that the traffic alters their behavior either. At the beginning of last year's nesting season, no one knew how the eagles would be affected by the increase in activity around the nest. This is a great opportunity for students learning the complex concepts of the scientific method to put them into actual use. It is certainly surprising that the eagles have chosen this area for their nest site. Now the students can be part of learning about these eagles along with the rest of the community. What better way to instill a respect and love for the natural world? You never know what may be discovered in the depths of the data. What fun we will have looking for those hidden relationships. I got there at about 10:15 AM. Both eaglets were active in the nest. There was a brisk northerly wind. The male (Pride) came in with prey from behind the nest. After feeding the eaglets he roosted on a branch just above the nest. The older eaglet (Honor) is on the right in this photo. She seems to have a more prominent white area on her upper breast. Suddenly, at about 10:45 AM the adult and the eaglets were in a state of alarm, calling and looking up. An immature Bald Eagle that looked like a second year bird suddenly circled around the nest tree. Pride took off after it and they disappeared to the south. Pride soon came back and resumed watch at the nest. The same immature appeared again and was driven off more forcefully. Pride took up a watch on the horizontal branch higher up above the nest. There was excited calling and suddenly at about 11:30 TWO immature eaglets appeared. Pride chased each one in turn but they lingered and circled for about 10 minutes before disappearing in the sky to the north. Watchers were not sure whether the first immature, which was a 2nd year bird, had returned. Upon examining the feather and molt pattern, it appears to be the same bird. The other eagle had a mostly white head and darker tail, so it was a 4th year sub-adult.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FRI-MAR-14-2-or-possibly-3-immature-eagles-chased-away-10-15-11-30-AM-td7573427.html","images":11},{"id":"7573428","topic":"7573427","order":2,"title":"Re: FRI MAR 14 - 2 or possibly 3 immature eagles chased away 10:15-11:30 AM","author":"smithk6303","date":"2014-03-14T20:24:15.420000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"How interesting!! Will look forward to seeing Greg's photos! I hope everyone who sees both eagles at the nest will either try to get good photos or assure whether the female is either the new one with some brown on her head and tail, or Joy. Our working hypothesis is that Joy is still alive. She may be injured and is unfit for breeding, or she may have been driven away by the new female. Photos will be the best way to document which female is present. There have been many reports of both male and female Bald Eagles driving away and attempting to displace a member of another pair. I believe that there may not be enough time for Pride to bond with the new female and they may not nest. Yet, look at his behavior in my video clip-- he almost look as if he is sitting on eggs! I found this older news article from West Virginia: Charleston Daily Mail Friday, March 23, 2012 http://www.charlestondailymail.com/News/201203220219 The eagle population in the Eastern Panhandle is not huge but seems to be growing, said Jim Siegel, course leader and biologist. \"Over the last couple of years we've seen more eagles competing for nests,\" he said. \"Last year as the first egg hatched, the male was driven away by a different male and disrupted the pair. The young eagle did not get fed and died at two or three days old. The original female and the new male paired and started a courtship, but it was too late in the season to re-nest. They did not fledge any young last year. \"This year the original female and the new male re-nested and there are two strapping baby eaglets,\" he said. - See more at: http://www.charlestondailymail.com/News/201203220219#sthash.sSQRugMB.dpuf","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-12-Video-of-male-at-nest-td7573823.html","images":0},{"id":"7573826","topic":"7573823","order":4,"title":"Re: DEC 12","author":"johnnye","date":"2014-12-12T18:09:22.726000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Ken, This is all so very new to me but I am loving it. An injury could be preventing Joy from mating if one leg is too weak or she could be less fit and know she's in so shape to mate and manage eaglets and so she is staying away. See this article attached: http://mag.audubon.org/articles/blog/do-eagles-remain-faithful-one-mate-their-entire-lives Mating for life sounds so romantic, but nature allows birds a lot of the other possibilities that we humans have. And on another clip, one of the juveniles few in and with lots of wing contact and upended an adult who then flew to a bare branch above the nest and watched as the second juvenile arrived. I have added your embedded video to today's Blog post. Your video illustrates the difficulty we have in interpreting eagle behavior, yet the value of observing it, and in this case, capturing it on video. Pride was roosting nearby in the pine to the east of the nest tree. Jewel often looked down into the nest and was probably tending to a newly hatched eaglet. She continued to sit very high so that we could always see her head and neck and often the top of her back. Ground observations strongly suggested that incubation had commenced around New Years weekend. Since that was 5 weeks (35) days ago it coincides with the normal Bald Eagle incubation period. Pride stared at us quite intently even though we were a safe distance away. This attentiveness may also be a sign that an egg has hatched.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FEB-6-First-egg-may-have-hatched-this-weekend-td7574689.html","images":4},{"id":"7575063","topic":"7575063","order":1,"title":"Fwd: Look who was still haging around Friday","author":"Stylechick60","date":"2018-07-30T17:45:48-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hi everyone! If our local Pembroke Pines nest tree were to blow over, this sort of platform could provide an alternative site, as eagles often will rebuild near a former nest if there is a suitable place for a nest. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Happy New Year Date: Fri, 31 Dec 2010 21:58:55 -0500 From: Barb Walker I'm trying to get this out to all my raptor friends in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough and Polk and elsewhere...sorry, it is the good and the bad...more on eagles in January. One really great bit of good news. Honeymoon Island hatched! And - if you want a great view of the Progress Energy Power Plant nest and don't want to worry about parking... take the eco-tour boat out of Tarpon Springs. http://www.sunlinecruises.com/ Well, I wrote this yesterday and a couple of unfortunate incidents have prevented me from getting it out to you. For one my computer hung up right before we went out on a recon eagle mission in Tarpon Springs. Ended up at Captain Jacks with no hurt eagles so that was good. The computer still has a long way to go, but I think I'll be able to get this out tonight. This afternoon ended up with tears out in Safety Harbor for an osprey which died on the ball field lights. A recovery mission is not yet underway, the osprey is still hanging there, but I've enlisted the help of David Witte of Progress Energy, (who was wonderful and on the way as usual) and the City of Safety Harbor and whichever contractor they have to use. It is just not getting done quite as fast as I hoped and not the way I like to see a New Year start. It does remind me of what the birds out there face every day though. I had words with the sheriff while I was out there, but he kept saying this was nature, and I kept explaining to him that ospreys hung up/possibly impaled on lights is not nature, and that the mate was stressed. He wasn't getting it, I don't think. Hollered I was going to be contacting the Mayor as I was leaving. I did too. The whole commission actually. Hopefully, the bird won't wait until Monday. But in any case, my communication was aimed to prevent this in the future and I leave there convinced there is a lot of work to be done there. There aren't enough hours in a day! Keeping wildlife safe takes a commitment - from everyone. I did hear back about the nest on the lines at the MacDonald's on Tampa Road and Burbank in Oldsmar. Stanley Kroh from TECO responded and asked that I be kept informed about the nest on the lines there. I had suggested that since a POND was put in there and it seems they are playing musical chairs on the lines over there that they put some platforms in the right of way around the pond. Will keep fighting over HL4 and HL43. HL4 FAILED! That is after finding all the roosting and nest tree dead suddenly on the property which is for sale. I do suspect a pine disease in that area and suggested TECO look into some eagle habitat restoration in that area. I am going to put together a document for TECO, including the IUA with recommendations for their APP that the biologist might have missed several years ago. Things have changed. This morning started off right. We had an osprey on THE platform..... read below to see the nice message I had initially planned to send....the habitat loss crept in there anyway. Happy New Year to everyone. (12/30) Thought you all might enjoy the pictures of the osprey platform installed at Cypress Woods Elementary School this morning. The platforms are really big when you see them at ground level. They look a lot smaller than that when we are whizzing by them 60 feet below. There is a pair of eagles nesting on a platform like this in central Florida at a Progress Energy substation. Please let me know if you see any nests on power lines. Ospreys are getting very busy and beginning to swoop low over the roads. I saw one killed on the Bayside Bridge a couple of weeks ago. About 90% of the population seems to be attending to their nests in Pinellas. The ospreys at the osprey cam should lay eggs soon, it was a year ago today. www.dunedinospreycam.org < http://www.dunedinospreycam.org >. Eagles are beginning to hatch. Some are beginning to incubate. Some are failing. It might not be a huge number for the ones that are failing, but the reasons are troubling. Well, actually in Hillsborough it might even be a higher number than I think we anticipated. It seems quite a few cell tower nests that were active went inactive. Where are all the eagles? While we finish collecting all this great data on eagles and osprey I am already thinking about Hummingbirds, Swallow-tailed Kites and Least Terns, my favorite birds to track in spring and summer of NEXT year. Hopefully we'll have lots of good and exciting news to send out next year and we will accomplish a lot through conservation and education. Happy New Year to Everyone! Thank you for all you do, for all the help, for all the support, for everything. Call anytime, you all know that I'm sure. I'll be in the field lots January.
