At 7:20 he photographed the male (Pride) roosting alone in the Melaleuca snags west of the nest. Luis reported some interesting observations from the previous day (DEC 22). Around 8:30 AM, I believe he said, both Pride and the new female fly together back and forth between the nest area and US 27. Pride was roosting near the nest when a third eagle arrived. Luis said it was a dark immature but showed some white on its head. The young bird proceeded to land on the nest and began arranging sticks while Pride stood by watching! I'm not sure where the new female was at this point. Not sure what this means, but normally an adult would not let a visiting immature bird enter or tamper with the nest, as far as we have observed over the 8 years we have been following events at this nest. I'll hazard a guess that the breeding instinct is fading. However, Luis said that the pair did interact in flight, at one point flying towards each other and almost touching talons.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-22-Immature-joined-pair-at-nest-male-in-Melaleucas-DEC-23-td7573868.html","images":0},{"id":"7573869","topic":"7573868","order":2,"title":"Re: DEC 22: Immature joined pair at nest; male in Melaleucas DEC 23","author":"Lisa G","date":"2014-12-23T15:39:09.879000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"I have seen other Eagles do this at other nest . The male eaglet was perched on the nest support branch only about 5 feet from the nest. He was nearly out of sight behind the large branch. He remained there the entire time of observation, calling infrequently. After almost 20 minutes I heard the call of the female rather close by to the east. I searched for it and could not find it at first. Then I noticed Blue Jays were approaching the area and they were mobbing the eaglet, which was roosting very high in a pine about 40 yards east of the nest, almost over the sidewalk. Obtained photos of both. No adults were seen. Male Eaglet: Female Eaglet with Blue Jay: Phil Martin visited the nest on July 11 and provided a nice photo of both adults. The (presumed) female was on the nest and sitting high all the time. At one point she appeared to be tearing at prey, and looked down as if feeding or tending to a chick. No other adult was in sight while we watched. Four or 5 observers had gotten there about 15 minutes earlier, and they also had not seen a second adult. No one had seen an eaglet by the time we departed. A small falcon flew in and roosted just west of the Bald Eagle nest tree. It made two flights out and returned to the same tree. Its wingbeats were energetic and it flew fast and directly. It was heavily streaked and its profile showed its head to be smaller than an American Kestrel's. It had one whisker stripe and no strong face pattern as seen in a female kestrel. It appeared to be an adult female Merlin. Photos are from about 200 feet, so they are not very sharp.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-January-22-Female-on-nest-brooding-Photos-td7214289.html","images":3},{"id":"7576322","topic":"7576322","order":1,"title":"Sept 25- 29 Sights","author":"NotToofast","date":"2021-10-03T21:18:29.527000-04:00","nest":"South Miramar DA-005","season":"","text":"Past week both eagles met in the area...This week one Eagle I believe the female) has been seen roosting in the area where the nest was located last season.. If you have problems, please contact: < [email withheld] > The procedure for posting photos provides two alternatives-- either post a photo from your computer or device or, if your photo is published on the Internet, you may post the address (URL) of your photo. In the latter case, be sure that the photo is JPG format. The address must end in \".jpg\" or it will not display. Be sure to \"resize\" the image, as the original may be larger than the size of the screen. Let the image \"float,\" which lets you decide where you might wish to place it if you are including text or captions. Post in the appropriate sub-forum. INSTRUCTIONS: = = = = = = The menu for posting photos is fairly straightforward: First, select the appropriate sub-FORUM in which to post your photo (e.g., a specific nest, a sighting away from a known nest, or others as listed). If you wish to have photos appear in your message, use the drop-down menu at the top of the \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" window. If you simply paste the link into the text, clicking on the link will direct the user to a single photo or separate web page. Select: \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" --> \"Insert Image\" --> choose either to upload from your computer or copy the image's address from the internet If you do choose the latter option, the display photo on many sites such as Facebook or Flicker etc may not be in JPG format, so you may need to click on it to view it in a separate window which may be JPG or provide options such as \"save image URL\" or format or size. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" Generally, the \"Large\" size option works fine, as it resizes the image to fit the screen. Also let the image \"float\" inside any text you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere in your message. IF you have multiple photos it is best to array them in a vertical stack rather than side by side, as they will otherwise spread across the screen horizontally and may not be as friendly when viewed on a phone screen, If you watermark your photos, please try to place the mark so that it does not detract from the subject of your photo. No sign of any eagles on the dead Melaleuca trees or anywhere else in the area. I left at 2 and returned about 30 minutes later. At 3:15 one adult eagle appeared on the nest. It stayed for about 30 minutes, was not doing anything except looking around and then flew away. I left at about 4:30. On the way home, I stopped by Long Key just west of Flamingo Road and saw some of the birds roosting in the trees by the entrance. I was surprised that they had not shut the gates as they usually do that promptly at 5 PM. Turns out there was a night hike to see the wildlife there, so there were lots of cars parked in the lot. I took a few pictures there http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/579072559uVnnyP . I'm pretty sure that the pictures of the Great White Egret are of the same bird who got into some trouble (about 10 minutes after I took its picture) with getting a foot tangled on something at the bottom of the shallow water. I noticed that he was near the bank in a few inches of water and his wings were spread and he almost looked like he was lying down. I went closer to see what was wrong and he struggled a little bit (but not much) to get away from me, but he was unable to walk or fly away. Long story short, two other people saw me looking at him, came over, and tried to help. The gentleman found a long stick and was able to gently move the water around and nudge the bird from underneath the body. Somehow, the bird was able to get free of whatever he was tangled up with and flew away. Whew! I was afraid that he would not make it through the night without some help and it might have been difficult to get someone who would know what to do and come there on a Sunday evening. Michelle Van Deventer, Florida FWC Bald Eagle Coordinator wrote (March 29, 2012) Generally, the rule is that successful nesting will increase the likelihood of nesting in the same location the following year but I’m not aware of any literature investigating the opposite angle of the question – e.g. likelihood of permanent nest abandonment due to loss of young. My guess is the most important factor influencing whether or not they return to the nest next season is what caused the loss this season. For example, eagles are likely to abandon if Great Horned Owls move in. Nest parasites may also result in them constructing an alternate nest in the territory. I am aware of plenty of situations where eagles have failed to fledge young during a breeding season, but still returned to the same nest the following season and started over. I’m cc’ing Lynda White at Audubon Eagle Watch to see if she has any thoughts/insight. Good luck! Lynda White, Eagle Coordinator for Florida Audubon responded (March 30): Losing an eaglet this close to fledging should not affect the return of the pair in the fall.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Does-nesting-failure-cause-Bald-Eagle-to-abandon-nest-in-future-years-td7424751.html","images":0},{"id":"7575836","topic":"7575836","order":1,"title":"Quick visit to nest 2.7.21","author":"naturegirl","date":"2021-02-07T12:33:13.050000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"i spent about 30 mins at the nest saw the mom standing up high and def saw two possible the third chick but couldn't get a clean photo. To my eye, the two eaglets appear to be older than two weeks. In the previous two years they did not sit up straight and look over the nest rim until they were respectively about 23 and 18 days old. The latter chicks were seen on a video through the nest structure, and did not raise their heads over the nest rim for at least two more days. Therefore, it is probable that the first egg was indeed laid on December 4, 2010, when Trisha observed the female sitting very low for 3 1/2 hours, barely visible through the nest materials. She then briefly flew away, only to return and resume sitting very low. No one saw a second eagle until 7 days later, December 11, when it was confirmed that incubation was indeed underway. Indeed, the incubating eagle remained almost invisible on several occasions thereafter, causing some concern that the nest had been abandoned. Supporting the assumption that the first egg was indeed deposited on or around December 4 are these photos I have taken of the eaglets in the past two breeding seasons, at comparable ages: 22 day old eaglet, February 9, 2009 20 day old eaglet, February 12, 2010","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Photos-of-two-chicks-SATURDAY-January-29-How-old-are-they-td5864861.html","images":2},{"id":"5974895","topic":"5864861","order":5,"title":"Re: Eaglets look older than two weeks","author":"Trisha","date":"2011-01-30T11:40:24.680000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"This is such interesting news, Ken! This season has been a bit of a puzzle for us so far! I do think a number of things could have been factors. The nest floor appears to be deeper as previously when the eagles were incubating they could always be spotted. The temperatures have been so much colder than previous seasons so I think the adults really had to stay on the eggs full time and down low. Also, the maleleucas in front make it much harder to watch the nest. I have found if you even look away for an instant you miss something as the view is only decent when the wind briefly blows the limbs away. This is frustrating for watchers and may have contributed to fewer spending as much time at the nest. Either trimming back the trees hiding the nest or in a perfect world, the web cam would make it much more conducive to watching again. I really have been puzzled that no one felt the eggs hatched on or near that Sat., the 4th, that we observed for the entire morning. I was as positive as could be that the behavior we observed indicated an egg had hatched. Ken answered the only question we had about why no feeding when he explained that the the egg sac provided nutrition for up to 2 days! I had even entertained the idea that one eaglet could have hatched around the 4th and perhaps it did not survive. I felt that certain....as did Tom and Kino..... of what we were seeing. I'm just thrilled now that all is well and with 2 eaglets!!!! Thanks, Ken, for your uncanny attention to detail and your unwavering concern about the nest and the eagles! Only 1 adult was seen on the dead tree perch for about 2 hrs and then it left and did not return before I left. The eaglets were very busy with their new found skills. The first \"flying session\" only involved the larger eaglet. It was moving in a circle around the rim of the nest with both its feet in clear view. It would then start hopping as it held its wings wide open and become briefly air born. It lasted about 10 minutes while the other young stood by and watched. Later both eaglets remained down low in the nest resting for at least 1/2 hour. Around noon the wind picked up as rain was approaching. Both eaglets stood up high on the nest and were jumping up and down with their wings extended. With the wind very strong they both were hopping from one side of the nest to the other in opposite directions (some of the time air born) It really looked like they were jumping on a trampoline. Watchers were going from excitement to panic as it looked like the wind might carry them right off the nest! Finally the wind got really strong and all at once they both got down in the nest and were still in that mode when I left.....perhaps worn out or just taking it easy in such strong wind. When I watch them so close to flying it is very exciting but also very frightening. I just wish that there could always be someone at the nest watching to make sure that they are safe. You don't even need binoculars to see this new pre-flight action.....so any amount of time we can spend at the nest is so important for the eaglets in case of a mishap.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Both-eaglets-briefly-airborn-td2514485.html","images":0},{"id":"2515620","topic":"2514485","order":2,"title":"Re: Both eaglets briefly airborn!","author":"Michele","date":"2009-03-21T21:28:00.002000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thanks for the update Trish ! One thing that puzzled me was that the eagle that took over had its beak open like it was panting. Surely, it was not panting from heat as it was about 57 degrees at the time. Could it have been exhausted? The eagle that left the nest flew to a horizontal branch on a very close Australian Pine (the tallest one to the right/west).
