Birds of prey were generally considered \"bad,\" because they competed with humans by killing chickens and other livestock as well as game animals. Blackbirds destroyed grain, and were likewise so classified. The \"good\" birds helped control insects that ate crops or annoyed humans humans. Among my treasured bird books are many from a series by Arthur Cleveland Bent, \"Life Histories of North American Birds.\" Bent had remarkable powers of observation and his descriptions, though rather quaint by modern standards.were vivid and very enjoyable. Here is an excerpt from a web browser-based electronic book collection Bent's Life Histories, selected from the hundreds of species biographies assembled and written by Bent and his collaborators and published in a twenty-one volume series between 1919 and 1968 by the United States Government Printing Office. Here is an excerpt from Bent's Bald Eagle description. The entire entry, and links to many other of his species accounts may be accessed at: http://birdsbybent.netfirms.com/ch61-70/baleagle.html \"On June 20, 1782, our forefathers adopted as our national emblem the bald eagle, or the 'American eagle' as it was called, a fine looking bird, but one hardly worthy of the distinction. Its carrion-feeding habits, its timid and cowardly behavior, and its predatory attacks on the smaller and weaker osprey hardly inspire respect and certainly do not exemplify the best in American character. The golden eagle is a far nobler bird, but it is not strictly American. The wild turkey was suggested, but such a vain and pompous fowl would have been a worse choice. Eagles have always been looked upon as emblems of power and valor, so our national bird may still be admired by those who are not familiar with its habits. Its soaring flight, with its pure white head and tail glistening in the sunlight, is really inspiring; and it adds grandeur to the scene as it sits in a dignified pose on some dead tree, its white head clearly visible against the dark green of the forest background.\" http://birdsbybent.netfirms.com/ch61-70/baleagle.html","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagle-quot-hardly-worthy-of-the-distinction-quot-of-national-symbol-td2969412.html","images":0},{"id":"7573858","topic":"7573858","order":1,"title":"Wings Over Florida Program","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-12-18T05:51:01.706000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Wings Over Florida Program Wings Over Florida is a FREE award program open to resident and non-resident Florida birdwatchers. The nest had been damaged by last Sunday's severe thunderstorm. Part of the right (west) side of the nest had dropped down and the nest bole had tilted to the left. Yesterday Phil texted me to report that the nest had collapsed and the larger (presumably the female) eaglet was grounded. He contacted FWS/FWCC and recovered the female. She was injured and crying in pain. Phil transported her to Pelican Harbor Seabird Station where she was diagnosed with a broken right wing. She is undergoing treatment there. Saw the 2 chicks fly into the nest at the same time, and depart at the same time. They perched way back in the dead trees actually on the same tree. One chick on top, one on a branch to the right. One chick went back to the nest which I watched for a long time hoping for a feeding, but no such luck. A parent had been at the dead trees also, took flight way into the thermals, so I was hoping it was searching for lunch for the kids. Louis was also there for a long time trying to catch one of the kids when it took off, but to no avail. Of course, as soon as Louis, myself and another birder woman I hadn't seen before got into our cars the action started! Both kids back to the nest and a parent brought food. There was a lot of vocalizing from everyone. One kid flew to the parent's favorite perching tree to the East (with the long, vertical branch), and perched there while I took photos. They certainly seemed to be flying very well. In & out of the nest with no problem, and very smooth flying for kids just out of the nest for a week or less. When I left one had left the nest for places unknown, one stayed put, with a parent in the dead trees. Saw Trish, Lou, Fernando, but they all were gone long before I left. It was a wonderful afternoon.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/I-finally-see-the-kids-in-flight-td2621567.html","images":0},{"id":"2621857","topic":"2621567","order":2,"title":"Re: I finally see the kids in flight!","author":"Jill W","date":"2009-04-11T16:23:13.300000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I'm so glad to hear that the kids are flying well and able to get to and from the nest with no problem! The short slender shape suggests it is the male, Pride. Pride has shown some sign of molting or possible feather damage to the his left wingtip, but this is not clearly evident in this view. Note that (not counting the short alula or \"thumb\" feathers which are not clearly visible in this photo) the outermost feather is short, which is probably normal, the third feather from the tip may be missing and the next one is being replaced. This fits the pattern for Pride's left wing. Pride also has a dark outer tail feather which is not apparent. Only a little later, Phil Martin made this observation at the nest and obtained two dynamic photos of the larger female eaglet. Our records at this nest over the years have included seven accounts of the eaglets' ages when first seen \"helicoptering\" (hovering briefly over the nest) The median age was 71 days and the average was 73 days (range 60-80 days of age). This eaglet is estimated to now be 60 days old -- May 13, 2020: I was at the nest at 8:06 this morning. The male Eaglet was sleeping, however, the female was standing on the nest. She was flapping her wings and “helicoptering” for about a minute than proceeded to lay down. Phil The previous day Phil wrote (MAY 12, 2020): I was at the nest a few minutes before noon and observed both Eaglets laying in the front of the nest. After a few minutes, Pride flew in from the north with prey for lunch. The Eaglets are while Pride perched above the nest for a couple minutes and departed to the East. Pride did appear not to be hindered in his flight due to the missing feathers. It was not easy to choose from the great names everyone submitted . We choose to pick names with Great meanings .For the Male his name is Akando! (boy) You are the secret weapon! Your specialty is setting up an ambush when the enemy least expects it. You are shrewd and listen to your gut feeling. With your ingenuity and cunning you win every battle. The female name is Powaqa! (girl) You are the spiritual mind of the tribe! You interpret the signs and read clues carried by the wind. Nature provides you with warnings of impending danger and possible harm, which you put to good use. We wanted to find names that had true meaning for the Bald Eagle. Meaning of the Eagle Symbol Native American Indians were a deeply spiritual people and they communicated their history, thoughts, ideas and dreams from generation to generation through Symbols and Signs such as the Eagle symbol. Native American symbols are geometric portrayals of celestial bodies, natural phenomena and animal designs. Native American bird and animal symbols and totems are believed to represent the physical form of a spirit helper and guide. The Native Americans consider the bald eagle and the golden eagle to be sacred. As eagles are the highest flying birds they were seen to be nearer to the Creator. The meaning of the Eagle symbol was to signify courage, wisdom and strength and its purpose was as the messenger to the Creator. The eagle was believed to carry prayers to the Great Spirit in the Spirit World and also had a special connection with visions. Eagle feathers were highly significant to the Native American Indians and the bones of eagles were used to make the whistles and flutes used at religious ceremonies and rituals. It was a custom to hold an eagle feather aloft when saying a prayer and during special council meetings eagle feathers were held as an assurance that the person was telling the truth. Eagle feathers also held a connection to the Great spirit. The eagle had the ability to live in the realm of spirit, and yet remain connected and balanced within the realm of Earth. The eagle is therefore often connected with balance. Eagle Myth: The Abenaki solar deity 'Kisosen' meaning \"Sun-Bringer\" was symbolised as an eagle whose wings opened to create the day and whose wings closed to create the night. The two birds had locked talons in mid-air and couldn’t get separated before they crashed to the concrete, said Randy Hanzal, a conservation officer with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Both birds survived the fall but remained entangled. “Their talons were embedded in each other very deeply,” Hanzal said. An employee of Monaco Air, an aircraft servicing center at the airport, had seen the birds fall and called the DNR after they were on the ground. Hanzal collected the birds, both adults, and tried to transport them to Wildwoods, a wildlife rehabilitation organization in Duluth. That didn’t go so well. “The guys at the airport told me put them in the front of the truck,” Hanzal said. “My better judgment told me not to do that.” Good thing. Hanzal didn’t have a portable cage large enough to contain the eagles, he said. He put them in the back of the pickup and covered them with blankets and jackets. He strapped them down with webbing straps and traveled slowly to Wildwoods, about two miles away. “Halfway to the rehabber, there was a ruckus in the back of the truck,” Hanzal said. “I looked around and saw feathers flying up. One of the eagles jumped out the back, onto my tailgate.” That eagle flew away, he said. Hanzal covered and strapped down the other eagle again and made it to Wildwoods. Early Monday, that bird was transported to the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, said Peggy Farr at Wildwoods. “It had some superficial injuries where they had locked talons,” Farr said, “but it also looked to me like it had a talon wound deeper into its abdomen.” She treated the bird with antibiotics, fluids and pain medication, she said. Julie Ponder of the Raptor Center said the prognosis of the eagle is good despite the fact that it had some deep puncture wounds in its leg and one deep abdominal puncture. It can be difficult to differentiate between male and female eagles, and Ponder said she couldn’t be sure in this case. Mid-air battles between eagles aren’t uncommon, said Frank Nicoletti, director of banding at Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory in Duluth. An eagle, usually a sub-adult, will wander into the territory of a pair of breeding eagles, he said. “There are days on Wisconsin Point where I see it regularly,” Nicoletti said. “I often see them locking and heading down toward land or water. They generally break off. It’s pretty rare for them to hit the ground.” http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/267085/","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagles-Lock-Talons-Crash-Land-at-Minnesota-Airport-td7573068.html","images":0},{"id":"7573624","topic":"7573624","order":1,"title":"Sighting, cones, ...","author":"Maria Rosa Drake","date":"2014-09-26T08:59:19.238000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Hi, On my way home around 5:30pm I saw a cherry picker right in front of the nest. It takes a village to protect native wildlife from the hazards we have created for them in their now urbanized environments. It is really great that this forum allows caring people to share their observations and pictures but also allows you all to coordinate your efforts, help protect them when you see them being disturbed and come to their aid when they are in trouble. Some people don't agree with nest locations being publicized, but when it helps to protect and educate and give the eagles a helping hand when they need it is most, then it is in their best interest. Keep up the great work. We look forward to seeing the eaglet make it's way back up to the nest on the forum, your friends at the Burrowing Owl Cam. Kelly Heffernan SFAS's Project Perch [phone withheld] Later in the afternoon it was reported that the wildlife rescue team discovered the eaglet perched in a tree closer to the ground. If grounded, a newly fledged eagle will normally \"ladder\" its way back up to the nest, so we may now expect to see both remaining on the nest to be fed. Within a week or two they usually begin foraging with the adults and will spend less time on the nest. Pride was in the nest and Newfee was very close by on a supporting branch. Definite indications that this is not the 4th year eagle that has also been visiting are the extensive white head with faint \"osprey line\" behind her eye and dark spot on top of her head. Bill is entirely yellow and under-tail coverts are entirely white rather than dark as in the 4th year eagle. Small dark tips to tail feathers are much less extensive than on the 4th year bird. While not possible to measure this feature exactly, it is notable that the back toe (hallux) of this bird seems to be quite long, a characteristic of a female. Although she is a bit closer to the camera I think the size differential is apparent, as is her more massive head and higher forehead. The female's gape (the back corner of mouth/beak opening) is said to be farther back in females than in males, extending almost to the back of the eye, while that of the male may end around the middle of the eye. I do not see this, but it is worth noting in any photographs. This was the best I could do, as the wind was blowing and Newfee's head was out of sight in almost all of the 60 photos I took. This is an encouraging sign that the pair is continuing to bond. It may well be too late for them to breed, but they are biologic organisms and therefore may not be entirely predictable.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-8-1-30-PM-Pride-and-new-female-quot-Newfee-quot-at-nest-td7573903.html","images":4},{"id":"7573407","topic":"7573407","order":1,"title":"Thursday FEB 20 1:45 PM feeding","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-02-20T16:52:08.225000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Got out at 1:15 PM to watch the Pembroke Pines eagle nest for about 45 minutes. The female bird is recovering from an injured wing and other injuries sustained when the couple slammed beak-first into a hard snowbank in what her rescuers believe was an aerial courting ritual gone awry. The male eagle died in the impact, which left the birds buried upside down at least two feet in the snow in the town of Valdez. It's mating season for eagles, who perform an elaborate ritual where they clasp talons and spiral toward the ground. This pair probably got caught up in the throes of the moment, said Bob Benda, a bird rescuer and biology professor at Prince William Sound Community College who was among those responding to the Easter Sunday crash. \"They just lose track of what they're doing and don't know how close they are to the ground,\" he said. \"It's raging hormones or something.\" But most eagles fling themselves back to reality instead of diving through a crunchy layer of snow. In this case, the male landed next to the female. If the talons had been locked, they were now separated, possibly thrust apart by the velocity of the landing. Benda said he thought both eagles had died but then noticed the female was breathing. He helped arrange the eagle's transfer to the Anchorage-based Bird Treatment and Learning Center, where she is slowly emerging from shock... The electric company workers had moved to the east, near the corner of 208th Avenue. We gave up and made the U-turn at 209th. As we passed by the workers, one of them signalled to me and pointed up at a dead tree about 50 yards from the corner on the south side of Pines. It was the male! as Al noted a bit earlier, it had been watching the work all that time. This reminds me of the Middle School experiment, when the students collected data about the location of the adults during several time periods. They compared heavy traffic (high disturbance) times to low traffic (less disturbance) times. Although their sample was too small to be statistically significant, they found that the eagles were closer to the nest during times of most disturbance, which did not agree with their hypothesis that the disturbance should scare them away. They suggested that perhaps the birds reacted differently because they were more apt to protect the nest at times when there was a lot of noise and traffic. Eagle watchers may remember that workmen that had to excavate the area in front of the nest made the same observation, that the eagles seemed to be watching them. Earlier we encountered several deer in the wetlands SE of the nest, along SW 196th Avenue just south of Pembroke Road. First we saw a buck that had only one antler, but it was too dark for photos. Then we encountered a group of four does along the road. High water conditions in the Everglades may be forcing the deer to seek higher ground for foraging. It was still quite dark, so this picture did not come out very well, but I liked their pose. We think that the darker and slightly larger deer may be the mother of the three, which could be yearlings.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Male-roosting-near-208th-Avenue-this-morning-SEPT-30-td7573109.html","images":2},{"id":"7573668","topic":"7573668","order":1,"title":"Bald Eagle Tee Shirts for sale","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-11-20T11:05:12.001000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Support the conservation and Bald Eagle protection efforts of South Florida Audubon Society by purchasing Bald Eagle Tee Shirts. Joyce Tarnow, FHD Volunteer http://www.pelicanislandaudubon.org/hootoctober2010.html Voting For Amendment 4 The President's Hoot October 2010 View The President's Hoot Archive Are you as confused as I am about how to vote for Amendments and Judges? I usually do not know anything about Judges except to stay away from them locally. But when amendments are strongly supported for or against by developers and politicians, I take notice. Opportunity knocks. Amendment 4, also known as the “Florida Hometown Democracy” Amendment has been on the PIAS radar screen for some time. It simply states on the ballot “Establishes that before a local government may adopt a new comprehensive land use plan, or amend a comprehensive land use plan, the proposed plan or amendment shall be subject to vote of the electors of the local government by referendum, following preparation by the local planning agency, consideration by the governing body and notice. Provides definitions.” Amendment 4 only applies to changes to the comprehensive land use plan (the overall growth management blueprint) and not to the more frequently decided individual development approvals, re-zonings, or variances. This means that before any change can occur in the current land use of our county and city lands, the voters will have a chance to approve or deny that change. The Fl. League of Cities, the Fl. Association of Counties and the Fl. Chamber of Commerce are opposed. According to the New York Times, the opposition has raised $12 million to defeat the amendment. KB Homes and Pulte Homes gave more than $1 million. However, there are over 100 organizations supporting it including many Audubon chapters, Sierra Club of Florida, Save The Manatee Club, and Native Plant chapters, Friends of and taxpayer groups, and many other environmental organizations. Amendment 4 vote: Should the people have a say in determining whether their government’s comprehensive land use plan could be changed with a simple majority vote of commissioners or city councils? If you think not, like most developers and politicians, then vote against Amendment 4. If you think you want more of a say in crafting our county and city land use changes, then vote Yes to Amendment 4. If Amendment 4 is enacted, we could have more careful planning from staff and politicians if they know that all voters will be reviewing and approving major changes in our comprehensive land use plans, not just developers. Contrary to some who think our county’s comprehensive land use plan includes other things than land use, Amendment 4 is very clear, that only if the land use part of the comprehensive plan is changed will it require a referendum vote . Why should changes be made to the comprehensive land use plan without voter approval? This is our community! Critics of Amendment 4 say it will just be another layer needed for approval and that it will be costly to get the voters’ view. I say, based on experience, we do need another layer of approval and the cost will be less than all the poorly funded and unfunded inadequate infrastructure and impacts (crowded schools, roads, police, libraries, and now even the lifeguards) of our out of control development. Indian River County’s over development with “backdoor subdivisions” have drained these community services. Our “busted subdivisions” with their empty houses, huge inventories, vacant lots, bankruptcies and foreclosed homes, have not paid for it. If an emergency change is needed, I am sure the community voters will approve it. In the last six years, Indian River County has had only 22 future land use amendments: Averaging less than 4 per year. Growth management in Florida is not working. Our natural areas are being ruined and our waters polluted. Even though Amendment 4 is not perfect, it could start the process of change that is needed in the way we do business in Florida especially as the teeth have been taken out of the Department of Community Affairs (the state watchdog for development) through budgets cut to the bone, and the State Legislature may even eliminate it next year (like our commissioners recently disbanded many citizen advisory committees). The DCA has done the most to keep Florida’s growth under control, and the Florida Legislature wants to reduce its effectiveness. In addition, the Supreme Court has allowed our big corporations to pour money to candidates for elected office and thus our out of state developers will be even stronger in their influence with our local and state politicians. We need to work together as a community …politicians, developers, environmentalists, educators, service providers, and citizens to balance population growth with sustainable resources. We need a common vision of what we want for quality of life where developers can help make our community ideal for us all, so we all benefit. A strong vote of support on Amendment 4 will at the very least send a clear message to county and state officials that we citizens are deeply concerned about balancing population growth with sustainable resources. Conclusion: Who do you want to control our growth – you or the developers? Please vote FOR Amendment 4. Saturday, John and I were treated to an active morning of the two eaglets travelling in and out of the nest several times. They flew around us, over us and spent a good deal of time in the malelluca strand very close to the front for all to see! One of the offspring took short flights from one tree to another on several occasions and struggled with balance each time. I took many photos and have posted some of them to my slideshow - photos 31 through 39 are from Saturday. Look for small bits of bark flying near the talons on some of the pictures where the eaglet struggled with footing! Sunday was active as well! Both offspring spent a bit of time flying in and out of the nest and appearing together at the malleluca strand (far apart, but both at the strand at the same time.) One of the parents roosted for a moment to clean its bill. Photos 40 through 46 are from this morning. I included 3 photos of some other feathered freinds which visited this morning while we were Eagle watching (#44-Gray Catbird, #45-Downy Woodpecker, #46-Red-Bellied Woodpecker.) Barb From: NewMexiKen [via Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida] [mailto: [hidden email] ] Sent: Wednesday, February 17, 2010 12:29 PM To: barbibird Subject: FDOT consults with FWC re nest observation platform and sidewalk On February 10, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in order to initiate consultation concerning its plans to mill and resurface the stretch of Pines Boulevard from US-[specific street address withheld]. The plan includes a sidewalk that also would pass in front of the Bald Eagle nest site. FDOT plans to follow the FWC Bald Eagle Monitoring Guidelines and offers several assurances to protect the nest and roosting sites. Construction near the nest will not occur during the eagles' breeding season (October 1 - May 15), and heavy equipment would not be staged on the block in front of the nest. Significantly, FDOT seeks guidance from FWC as to the feasibility of the request by the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle Steering Committee to provide for an eagle nest viewing platform, roadside parking on the south side of Pines Boulevard, and \"Traffic Control Devices, such as roadside barriers to protect pedestrians.\" The full letter with diagrams and maps of the proposed project may be accessed at this link (PDF).
