His final offering of the morning was a truly huge branch-- I would almost call it a small tree. It was so large that I could not fit the bird and the entire stick in one frame of my camera. He carried it in from the west, with the wind at his back, so he had to circle around the nest and approach it upwind from the east side. At first he held the stick with both feet. On his first attempt to land on the nest the female (Jewel) called out. Pride continued westward and again circled to try to land on the nest. However, he appeared to had lost his grasp and was only holding the stick with one foot. He flew back to the west and suddenly dropped the stick. I had to wonder whether Jewel told him that they were finished with major construction and she only wanted straw for nest lining. In any event, Pride simply continued on and took a roost along the road in front of the old nest.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-28-A-really-big-stick-td7575790.html","images":7},{"id":"4519628","topic":"4519628","order":1,"title":"Now all we need is a sextant-- attn all surveyors and navigators!","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-02-05T07:26:26.759000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Barry Heimlich offers this elegant solution, and a new use for Google (guess I don't need to find my old slide rule). Also, the Ren Fest boss was not to happy with me for going there this week, but I talked to him, and explained that it was time for the eggs to hatch this week on the 19th and I just needed to see if that had happened, so he let me in, and we parted with a good understanding, I think. Marcia said they are going to work on getting passes for myself and Her, but they didn't mention adding anyone else. Marcia is handling all that and that's okay with me because she knows all of those people much better than I do. Also, they don't want anyone going through the fence inside the park unless we have \"Hi-Vis\" vests on and a hard hat because it's an active construction site, and we have to be either a park employee or a RenFest employee. There have been two attempts to install a nest camera at the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle nest. The first involved a proposal for support from the Florida Department of Transportation, and the second would have involved a camera to be placed on the FP&L electric distribution pole in front of the nest. After initial encouragement from the intended sponsors, both approaches were unsuccessful. Without getting into the reasons for these failures, there remains core support among eagle watchers and South Florida Audubon leadership for continued efforts to make a nest camera a reality. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis has also accepted the assistance of the Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee in developing changes in City planning documents to pave the way for strengthened protection of active eagle nests and official designation of the Pines Boulevard nest site as a sanctuary. While the City is not in a position to offer financial support, the Mayor expressed enthusiasm for for a nest camera. Barry Heimlich, a member of the Steering Committee as well as former President of South Florida Audubon, has agreed to coordinate these latest efforts. He plans to take a project management approach focused on getting things done without a lot of committee meetings. Barry will require help and cooperation from the City of Pembroke Pines, South Florida Audubon Society, the schools, and other interested parties. He would like to assemble a small task force of motivated people who are willing and able to help make this happen. He invites anyone interested in joining the task force to contact him as soon as possible. Barry has shared his ideas with Mayor Ortis and several others who have worked on it thus far, stating: \"Clearly the efforts to accomplish this in cooperation with FPL, FDOT, etc. have run into road blocks, so it’s clear that a new approach is required. Ken Schneider and I got to talking about it while we were birding together and starting thinking about what new approaches might work... \"As has been done on other webcam projects, the camera should be mounted on the tree above the nest swaying in the breeze with the nest and birds. Technically, an approach to consider is using a self-contained solar-powered unit connected wirelessly to the internet using the best affordable technology. Everything would be self-contained on City of Pembroke Pines property. To avoid unnecessary bureaucracy and regulation to the extent allowable, we should be as self-reliant as possible without using of utility poles or hardwired power or communications connections. I suggest that the webcam site be hosted on SF Audubon’s website and promoted through internet search engines. Of course, we will get the required approvals and we’ll need financial support through donations. \"We should offer sponsorships (advertising) to respectable businesses in related clean energy, wireless communications, outfitters, ecotours, sellers of binoculars and camera equipment, security systems, etc. Perhaps companies in these businesses would donate equipment, services and funding in win-win exchange for goodwill advertising. This project should eventually be self-supporting. Funds raised if any could be used for good environmental, education and social causes, such as support for the SF Audubon chapter, city/county education, conservation, and recreation programs, and other appropriate causes. These are preliminary ideas intended to stimulate suggestions, so please share your ideas with me. What’s important is that we’ve decided to clean the slate and find creative and practical approaches that will work. I hope to receive your input as I develop a draft plan of action, which will be circulated for comment and suggestions. \"Establishing an Eaglecam is not rocket science. It’s been done many times before as shown on the following websites. I will be contacting many of these groups to find out what I can about how they succeeded with their projects. Below is a list of a few that you can peek at: Hampton Roads, Virginia: http://www.wvec.com/marketplace/microsite-content/eagle-cam.html Decorah, Iowa http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/06/eagle-cam-decorah-iowa_n_845635.html Shepherdstown, West Virginia at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services' National Conservation Training Center http://outdoorchannel.com/Conservation/EagleCam.aspx \"We won’t be able to install any equipment until after the eagles have fledged this year’s crop of young in mid-May and we will only have until the beginning of next October to get it set up. In the meantime we have to do our planning and do what needs to be done. I hope a few of you willing be interested in working with me to accomplish this for the benefit of community and to encourage conservation. Please contact me if you’re interested.\" Barry N. Florida FWS has given it a temporary nest ID of DA941. You may recall that the nest tree is on the planned site for a \"mega\" shopping center with a Wall Mart. The last I heard, the plans for the shopping center are still ongoing but will appreciate any information about the status of the plans. Since it is an \"active\" nest the Florida FWC has a duty to assure that the eagles or nest tree are not disturbed, and particularly that the eagles are not injured or driven to abandon the nest. This restriction applies for a three year period. Any construction in the area must take into consideration the Bald Eagle Management Guidelines and only a FWC permit for such activity will protect the developer from liability in the event that the nest is abandoned or the eagles are \"taken.\" The last I heard, the Florida FWC had a volunteer watching the nest during the road construction but have no further information as to the findings of any monitoring activity. I do not know what happened to the eagles last breeding season. The last time I checked was on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015 and there was no sign of them. Others had checked a few weeks before and also did not see the eagles. Of course the road work went almost up to the tree. I frankly feared that they might have been frightened away or even harassed or injured. Was there ever evidence that they raised any eaglets? Some neighbors who opposed the construction were subject to criticism by supporters of the shopping center, but I hope someone will speak up. Very interesting to know that they have arrived. Let's get the word out so that perhaps more eyes can be kept on them. If anyone can add information, please post here! I have had a computer crash and lost all my e-mail files. During those 35 minutes I took a series of 29 photos, all of which showed an adult roosting on the support limb to the right of the nest, and the barely-visible back of a second eagle deep in the nest. The second bird never showed its head and barely changed position the entire time. Streaks on this bird's tail suggest it may be the female. 08:51 AM: 09:20 AM: I left for an appointment but returned at 9:20 AM. A single adult eagle was roosting in the same exact spot. There was now no evidence of a second bird in the nest. 10:43 AM: This time I got a few photos of its undertail feathers and am fairly sure that it was the female (Jewel) as there were two longitudinal dark striations (possible feather vanes), each spaced about the same distance from the right and left outer tail feathers. At 10:47 the roosting eagle flew down onto the nest. Here I could see some dark flecks on the dorsal tail coverts which again may be indicitave that this is indeed the female. However, I could not visualize the undersurface of the tail. 10:47 AM: The (presumed) female eagle then began rearranging sticks and remained busy for about 3 minutes. 10:48 AM: At about 10:50 she settled down and by 10:56 was barely visible above the rim of the nest. 10:56 AM: An interpretation of this series is that initially the male was incubating and the female was standing watch, but the male then departed just before I arrived the second time and the female took over incubation duties. Of course this is speculation, but very interesting.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-14-Interesting-behavior-of-pair-at-nest-this-morning-td7574250.html","images":6},{"id":"7574251","topic":"7574250","order":2,"title":"Re: DEC 14: Interesting behavior of pair at nest this morning","author":"Lisa G","date":"2015-12-15T10:31:27.264000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"I agree she is very deep in the nest . I would be able to see her but no, I stay there for about 30 min and the juvie start getting impatient and went down to the nest and they start I wouldn’t say fighting but they start flying in violent mode they never touch each other though, until the juvie did land at the nest then after 1 to 2 min going back and for each other surprisessly Pride left letting the juvie land at the nest, an empty nest first start fixing some rails and then look like was eating some leftover stay there for more than 10 min and then left never saw Pride again while I was there, this juvie is not even close to maturity head still brown with no sing of white feather, but let me tell you its been feeding very well because it sure look amazingly beautiful and big, I still pray for our Joy came back maybe she is on other duties I and know another nest far away from here really don’t remember where but the female left for about 20 or more days everybody thought that she was dead but she came back apparently with some injuries but came safe, anyway now I know something happen and most likely this year there will be no happy season for us who love this nest so much I pray for this to change I don’t care if we lost the season but I want her back to the nest safely I know they are animal but I can’t stop thinking how he is missing her after so many years together maybe I look stupid maybe my human side is coming out but sure he will miss her !!!!! Maybe only him know what happen to her OH MEN I FEEL I also want to comment i don't know if you agree with this but another fact that make me think that is Pride and no joy is that by this time of the season if she is the one we see at the nest she would be able at least to laid an egg at least one would be ready to laid and then of course she would abandon because she wouldn't be able to feed herself and protect the nest and take care of the egg . in my experience with other nest this is what happen when an egg has been laid and one of the parent disappear. At 1:21 PM the female flew in and we thought she was going to switch duties but our photo later showed the she brought in prey, a white bird (photo I posted earler today). The two adults called to each other as both stood on the nest rim. In this photo you can see the prey item under the talons of Joy's left foot. She then flew to the favored perch in the Australian Pine just to the east of the nest and began cleaning her bill. Al remarked that this was probably a sign that she must have brought in prey, and it turned out that he was right! The male resumed tending to the nest. For a while she dangled her left foot as we have seen her do before. When I arrived at 10:40 AM, I was driving east on Pines Blvd and saw that there was an eagle on top of one of the dead melaleucas to the west of the nest. I stopped at my usual parking spot and saw an eagle in the nest. After that, I drove west to get a better look at the one on the dead tree and try to determine which one it was, but it was gone. I returned to my parking spot and watched the one in the nest for about 30 minutes. There were no obvious (at least, to me) signs of distress. A little before 11:30, the other eagle flew in from the SE to a branch of the nest tree above and a little to the east of the nest. The eagles greeted each other but did not move for about 5 minutes. The one on the branch then flew a bit to the north (in my direction), grabbed/snapped off a dead branch and carried it to the nest. It just stood there for a couple of minutes on the edge of the nest like it didn't know what to do next. The one in the nest stayed hunkered down while the other just stood there. Finally, the one in the nest stood up, flew to the west, and stopped on top of one of the closest dead melaleucas. It then preened for about 7 minutes. This is the second time I've seen an eagle preen for a seemingly long time after being relieved of incubation duty. When it was done preening, it flew west and landed on top of a concrete (power? phone? both?) pole by the south side the road about as far west as the middle of the high school. It looked down for a few minutes and then flew north, crossed Pines Blvd and thn flew down so low, I lost sight of it.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-watch-Sun-10-Jan-2010-td4282288.html","images":0},{"id":"4282455","topic":"4282288","order":2,"title":"Re: Nest watch, Sun, 10 Jan 2010","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2010-01-10T15:26:37.828000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Glad to hear that both were seen acting normally after Sat's freakish weather! This is the first (to my knowledge) observation of one of the adults sitting atop a utility pole-- presumably one of the tall cement poles that carry the power distribution lines along the south side of Pines Boulevard. Several of us saw an adult touch the top line as if to roost, but it merely hesitated less than a second and continued flying. As the dead melaleucas continue to fall down, we can expect more use of the power structures for roosting. Seen snapping off larger branches, too, and yet another exchange of incubation duties. I once saw both members of the Pembroke Pines pair chase off an intruding immature eagle when eggs were left uncovered and not watched. Same for very young eaglets. But once they can self-regulate their body temperature at least one parent usually keeps watch nearby. Therefore if they are uncovered during mild weather after 2 weeks age this would not be unusual, but one parent would normally be standing by, at least until the eaglets are big and strong enough to fight off an intruder. Persistent absence of feeding and tending would indicate mortality of the eaglet. The PP pair disappeared for a few days after losing their brood but within a week were copulating and soon produced a second clutch.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/UPDATE-eagle-pair-seen-away-from-nest-on-back-snag-questions-1-13-19-td7575176.html","images":0},{"id":"7575179","topic":"7575176","order":3,"title":"Re: UPDATE eagle pair seen away from nest on back snag questions 1.13.19","author":"naturegirl","date":"2019-01-13T16:18:34.112000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Ken, So if we were thinking egg(s) were laid some time around Dec 2nd - Dec 7th then at best an eaglet would only be about 1 week old too young to be left alone. If egg(s) haven't hatched then shouldn't be left unattended. Maybe the egg/eaglet is dead ? Is it possible they haven't laid any eggs yet? If temperature is above 70 degrees and there is no chill factor because of wind or rain, it is not unusual for the eggs or hatchling eaglet to be uncovered for brief intervals. I would expect the parent to be keeping close vigil until the eaglets are capable of defending against an intruder. If eggs or new eaglet is left alone for a long time in cold or inclement weather this would be concerning. Without a nest camera it is impossible to determine the exact day the first egg is laid or hatched. Before laying the egg the female may become \"broody\" and sit on the nest for long intervals for a few days before laying. We have been fairly successful at timing the event with the Pembroke Pines pair, by noting the first day that the female stays deep and does not depart from the nest over a prolonged period of observation. We think the PP female laid the first egg on or about December 6th, with expected hatch 35 days later (JAN 10), but we are getting mixed signals as to the behavior of the adults, as much of the nest is not in clear view.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/UPDATE-eagle-pair-seen-away-from-nest-on-back-snag-questions-1-13-19-td7575176.html","images":0},{"id":"7575181","topic":"7575176","order":5,"title":"Re: UPDATE eagle pair seen away from nest on back snag questions 1.13.19","author":"naturegirl","date":"2019-01-15T19:09:16.376000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"UPDATE 1.15.19 stopped by around 1pm for about 10 mins and saw 1 adult deep in nest seemed like sitting on egg or eaglet. He had spotted the female (Jewel) roosting high atop a pine rather deep in the wooded area along SW 208th Avenue. After several minutes she must have either heard or seen the male flying in from the south, as she launched into the air and the male (Pride) appeared moments later. The pair roosted together in a high pine which is east of the nest along Pines Boulevard. Observers have seen the male bringing sticks to that location. Luis pointed out the beginnings of a new nest being built there. It is no more than a loose and small collection of sticks. After about 20 minutes Pride flew out several times and brought back branches of various sizes. One was very large and he made 2 or 3 unsuccesul attempts to deposit it at the nest site. He was carrying the stick at the very end and realized that he could manage it better by \"stepping\" along the stick to get neared its center of gravity and control it better. He then succeeded and the pair spent time at the nest. It is very difficult to see the nest as it is obscured by the dense clumps of pine leaves (\"needles\" which are actually thin branches with tiny scale-like leaflets). I had been visiting the original nest and found no evidence that any repairs had taken place. We are concerned that there seems to be no large supporting branches for this nest and it will require a feat of engineering to ever establish a strong foundation. This was probably why Pride was bringing in such a large branch. The partial view of the nest is available from the grassy center traffic island in the middle of Pines Boulevard, just east of the next power pole to the east of the old nest. Best place to stand to view the nest: Eagle pair at nest site, which is hidden just to the right. Female is higher up. Female is on or very close to the flimsy nest structure: Both of the pair are at the nest:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/NOV-28-Eagles-building-new-nest-td7575679.html","images":7},{"id":"7573087","topic":"7573087","order":1,"title":"Both Adults","author":"Phil M.","date":"2013-08-20T10:34:39.802000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"I saw both adults perched in their FAVORITE tree to the east of the nest on Sunday, 8/18 at 08:45.
