Most of the anecdotal information relates to loss of mate during the breeding season, when the survuving mate is strongly attached to the nest and territory. Since south Florida's adult eagles tend to stay near their nesting territory rather than migrate north, there may be a stronger tie to the nest area if a mate disappears. Here are some examples, all of which appear to relate to losses when there are eggs or eaglets in the nest. Do eagles mate for life? Generally, yes. Eagles engage in significant courtship and pair bonding behavior. Once a pair has succeeded in breeding, the pair will likely remain together for many years. However, if a mate dies or does not return to the nesting site for the breeding season, studies show that the surviving eagle generally will find a new mate very quickly. The remaining mate will likely use the existing nest with a new mate because of eagles’ strong nest site fidelity. https://www.nationaleaglecenter.org/eagle-nesting-young/ Since bald eagle’s mate for life, will the female take another mate? It's likely the female will have a mate by next season. “A big female like that, on the nest, without a mate sitting on the tree…if there is a floater around, that would attract attention.\" A male will bring the female sticks to try to impress her and “because she does the majority of the incubation, but not all, she has greater say in deciding where and how the nest operates.” https://www.9news.com/article/news/a-bald-eagle-in-colorado-just-lost-her-lifelong-mate-what-happens-now-to-her-and-her-eggs/73-5f4997d6-933d-4ff6-b5ad-573146c74b28 Q. Do bald eagles have only one mate for life? A. Typically, yes, although occasionally an intruding adult (not one of the pair) comes in (usually a female) and battles the resident bird for the territory, sometimes then taking over. When we arrived the female was roosting on the right edge of the nest, looking about and appearing restless. Mary Lou correctly guessed that she was awaiting a food drop, as within a few minutes the male flew in with a medium sized fish that looked like a Tilapia or possibly Peacock Bass [see comment in reply below, correcting the ID to Mayan Cichlid] . The pair called to each other and touched bills in a sort of recognition ritual, and the male flew off. The female tore at prey and fed one or more eaglets. We still could not see the eaglets over the rim of the nest-- we assume the nest cup is a bit to the rear. In past seasons the young have appeared over the nest rim at between 12 and 23 days of age. If our behavioral observations are correct, hatching occurred on January 15, and the first eaglet would be 11 days old today. Turkey Vultures must now be smelling the prey, as a couple of them circled several times close around the nest tree.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Prey-drop-this-morning-Thursday-January-26-td7228552.html","images":8},{"id":"7229116","topic":"7228552","order":2,"title":"Re: Prey drop this morning (Thursday, January 26)","author":"Square Grouper","date":"2012-01-26T23:12:32.225000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Hello from a lurker. Here is the nest back on January 10, 2016: This is the nest after the first storm, January 23, 2016: This is the nest as it appears today. A very large fresh branch has blown in from the right and now obstructs the view of the left side of the nest. The right side seems to have about the same bulk as in earlier photos. Note that the main part of the branch is leaning down from the upper right of the nest. At first I thought the nest was unoccupied, but then noticed movement to the rear left side of the nest. An adult was partially visible. sometimes resting in the nest and at other times pecking as if eating or possibly rearranging nest material or branches: It stood up once but I never got a decent view. Barbara Walker may know more about this subject. I am copying her. Near our Illinois home we had the first nest in Kane County since the DDT experience. That nest blew down and grounded two eaglets that were not ready for flight. A wooden platform was substituted but the eaglets fell out of that and had to be reared in rehab. Both fledged successfully. From 6/24/2012: http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20120623/news/706239931/ Another notable active nest is on private property at Mooseheart home and school for youths in need near Batavia. A pair of bald eagles fledged two eaglets in both 2009 and 2010. Last year, windstorms blew the nest and two little ones out of the tree. A man-made nest was placed in an adjacent tree but the eaglets eventually had to be relocated. The adults returned this year and built a nest in their original tree. -- Ken Schneider Ken and Mary Lou Schneider Miramar, Florida and North Aurora, Illinois Web Site: < rosyfinch.com > Blog: <http://rosy-finch.blogspot.com/> Photos: < flickr.com/photos/rosyfinch > Eagle Nest FORUM: < rosyfinch.com/BaldEagleNest.html#FORUM > Sandia Crest FORUM: < rosyfinch.com/Rosy-FinchFORUM.html > \"Openness to the natural world and our response to it lie at the core of what we do and why we do it.\" (Fr. In all my visits I observed the same activity and that is the female sitting in the nest, in the same position. I have not seen any movement from her. My last visit was from approximately 1:00-1:40. Based upon previous years behaviors and approximate time frames, I am inclined to believe she has laid egg(s) or is in the process of doing so. The attached photo is the best angle I was able to get. I did not see Pride today. Phil Thanks, Phil -- great observation. She seems to be sitting rather high in this photo. My guess is that she has become \"broody\" and agree that the first egg may be deposited within the next day or two. Based upon our prior years' observations ( see milestone spreadsheet ) I expect that she will then be almost out of sight in that huge nest and tend not to leave the nest at all for a few days, before exchanging incubation duties with the male.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/NOV-23-Female-Jewel-sitting-in-nest-Eggs-td7575437.html","images":1},{"id":"2595027","topic":"2595027","order":1,"title":"Photos of Hope flying free","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-04-06T15:38:20.175000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Hope Soars this morning: Hope atop pine tree this morning:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Photos-of-Hope-flying-free-td2595027.html","images":2},{"id":"7574559","topic":"7574559","order":1,"title":"Juvenile on AUG 18 and Adult on AUG 12","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2016-08-18T14:09:54.453000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"This morning a juvenile Bald Eagle, quite certainly Spirit, flew directly over my head at 7:00 AM (about 5 minutes after sunrise). For the entire time we watched, until about 9:45, we saw no other adult. Around 9:10, the bird flew into the melaleucas and roosted, for about 5 minutes. We confirmed it was \"Brown-tip,\" the male. He then took flight, coming towards Pine Boulevard quite low, just over the power lines. He flew to one of the Royal Palms on the north side of Pines at the cow pasture and tore off some dry foliage near the trunk at the base of the crown. Clutching the vegetation in his talons, he flew directly to a dead tree in the cow pasture. He then forcibly grabbed a large branch (sorry for the poor focus, though I did get a sharp view of the High School). The branch broke off near the trunk, and was too large for the bird to carry. He held on to it but had to let go before it hit the ground. In this shot, the branch is still falling. You can identify the broken-off stub on the tree by comparing this to the shot two frames above this one. He returned to the nest empty-taloned, and went on to feed the young some prey that was already in the nest.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-morning-Feb-7-Lone-male-keeps-us-amused-td4530366.html","images":9},{"id":"4531269","topic":"4530366","order":2,"title":"Re: Sunday morning Feb 7- Lone male keeps us amused","author":"vdelauz","date":"2010-02-07T17:02:10.040000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Excellent shots, Ken!!! Arrived at 9:45 and watched until after 10:30 AM. The nest has not seemed to have changed in structure or bulk since i last photographed it on September 14th. Found one adult roosting on the nest support branch in front and right of nest. It was immediately joined by a second which flew in from wooded area to the west, landed in the nest and appeared to be rearranging sticks. Judging by larger head and bill with deeper gape, the roosting bird appeared to be the female and the one in the nest was the male. He remained for about 10 minutes and then disappeared while I was distracted by the presence of a Northern Parula warbler and a curious catbird. I stayed on, hoping to see if any nest material was being brought in, but the male never came back. The nest tree is much more visible from the road, due to missing trees on all sides felled by Hurricane Irma. The roost tree just to the east was damaged but not brought down. Nearly all the Melaleuca snags to the east were brought down. The eagles will have to develop new roosting places, so keep an eye out, and also report any courtship or nest construction activities. The fence protecting the eagle nest area is badly damaged in many places. Hope it doesn't interfere with the season.\" Right now the City has its hands full attacking the backlog of hurricane debris and damage, so I do not think the fence will be a priority. Downed trees and branches have distorted and flattened many sections of the fence. In the meantime, the twisted tangle of felled trees around the eagle nest will make it nearly inaccessible. I hope the warning signs go up to deter parking along the road in front of the nest, as that has been a source of danger to drivers and eagle watchers in the past. The sidewalk in front of the nest is open and does provide a measure of safety to pedestrians. Although it is an \"existing disturbance\" which is technically exempt from the 330 foot prohibition (as is the roadway itself), nest watchers should not congregate there. The nest is now plainly visible from the opposite side of the eastbound lanes.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Both-adults-at-nest-this-morning-OCT-16-td7574793.html","images":0},{"id":"5880392","topic":"5880392","order":1,"title":"Sunday January 2 of the New Year 2011","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2011-01-02T22:00:53.747000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"I arrived around 4:15pm to find Jill there observing the nest. It is OK with me to be alone there watching, but much more enjoyable when there is someone else for several reasons. One, at least for me, I don't worry about my car and possible vandals when I walk to the dead tree area. It is not possible, even with binoculars to see the car from that area. Two, it is known at least at times, that two adults are in the area at the same time, one in the nest and one somewhere else in the area. Three, to feel a little bit more safe personally being there.
