We may expect to see the adults appear at the nest during September. Be alert for signs of courtship and nest building. Normally we can expect the first egg to be deposited around mid-December, but this past season they did not start incubating until early January. This was most certainly due to the fact that in the 2015-16 season they lost their first brood and did not lay a second clutch until early February The eaglets hatched in mid-March and remained dependent until late June, almost two month later than normally expected. After their late start to this past breeding season, it will be interesting to see if they get back to a more normal schedule.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Use-this-SUB-FORUM-beginning-in-AUGUST-2017-for-current-breeding-season-td7574779.html","images":0},{"id":"7574790","topic":"7574779","order":2,"title":"Re: Use this SUB-FORUM beginning in AUGUST, 2017 for current breeding season","author":"MyEagle13","date":"2017-10-04T11:53:51.072000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"Hi ken: I'm so worried about the breeding season this year, i have seen one of them don't know if the female or male perching at the branches in the nest, i have not seen any activities about restoration at all, yesterday morning i saw one of them flying in top of the light of pines blvd and us 27 and headed towards the everglades maybe looking for food, i see at least one them every day at the nest not an especifict time though, lets cross our fingers as soon i see them both togethers at the nest i will let you know . hope you find this information useful. velinda","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Use-this-SUB-FORUM-beginning-in-AUGUST-2017-for-current-breeding-season-td7574779.html","images":0},{"id":"7518479","topic":"7518479","order":1,"title":"Eagle pair spotted","author":"Catherine W.","date":"2012-05-01T19:27:42.762000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Sitting out in the backyard this evening around 7:15, both male and female flew overhead just south of the Pembroke Pines Nature Preserve. This was exactly a half hour after sunrise. The sightings have all been between 30 and 60 minutes after sunrise. The birds must be waiting until lighting conditions are adequate for fishing and hunting, so it is best to look for the pair just after sunrise or later in the day when they return to the nest territory. Kelly Smith might be able to find out if one or more eagles roost at the lighthouse during the day. The male Osprey will feed the female during courtship, but I could find no reference to such a behavior in Bald Eagles. We have seen food exchanges from one foraging adult to the one brooding young in the nest, but no one has reported one adult bringing food to the other during incubation. Therefore we might assume that this bird could be either the male or the female. Photo | Kitty Albee HOLLY HILL -- High winds left a family of bald eagles homeless Tuesday night when their nest in a large pine tree slipped sideways. \"I am really concerned about them,\" said Steve Petruniak, a member of the Halifax River Audubon Society. Petruniak watched the nest daily this winter as a pair of adult eagles successfully hatched two chicks in the nest at Centennial Park. However, a bald eagle expert said Wednesday that because Petruniak saw the eaglets fly for the first time last Saturday the young birds will probably survive just fine. \"If these birds are flying, they don't need the nest anymore,\" said Lynda White, Eagle Watch coordinator for the Audubon of Florida Birds of Prey Center in Maitland. \"As long as they're old enough to sit in a tree and be fed, that would be OK. \"They'll definitely come back to the tree for four to six weeks,\" White said, adding that young eagles often have difficulty learning to hunt and fish and need help from their mom and dad. \"More often than not when they're youngsters, the parents will continue to bring food to them.\" All four eagles and the nest were fine Tuesday, said Petruniak, who works just a few blocks away. But wind gusts overnight reached up to 25 mph in Daytona Beach, according to the National Weather Service. Petruniak noticed the nest looked unusual Wednesday morning. When he returned Wednesday evening, he saw both the adults moving between their dangling nest and a nearby dead tree where they often sit to watch the nest. Petruniak said the eagles fledged two chicks from the nest last year. Bald eagle populations soared nationwide in recent decades and the birds were removed from the endangered species list in 2007. They are still safeguarded under the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. In 2009, more than 1,300 eagle nests were documented in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. That included 60 nests in Volusia County and five in Flagler County. He had been watching since 8:20 and said this was Justice's second visit. At 8:45 he flew in from the west and made a large circle to the north and then flew off towards the south. At 9:20 he was back on the nest, arriving from the south. Only the tail was visible as he faced east. At 9:50 he very quickly popped up and took off due east from the left side. We watched the nest a while longer and then moved down to the maleleucas about 10:15 and found both the young about mid distance out, one above the other. Their dark shapes were clearly visible with the naked eye against the bleached out trees. With binoculars, you could see that Hope was above Justice and had a perch that enabled her to lean on a large dead tree trunk just to her east which seemed to be a buffer from the wind. Justice wasn't so positioned on a lower branch and was rocking back and forth using his wings to try to keep his balance. He seemed uncomfortable and took off to the south, flying low. She attempted to land in a tree that appeared to be SSW of the nest tree, but seemed unable to grasp a perch and dropped directly down out of sight. FWC was called, and Shawn Denton, Director of Public Works was also notified. Both advised us not to enter the nest area, and to wait for the FWC unit to arrive. Two FWC staff did show up quite promptly, and they searched for about a half hour in the general area of the nest and the area where the chick had possibly dropped down. The saw nothing, and heard only the calls of the single chick remaining in the nest. The agents advised that the eaglet was old enough to defend itself and probably had flown out of the 20 acre \"Eagle Forest.\" While eagle watchers on the scene were disappointed at not receiving any information on the eaglets condition or location, we must remind everyone not to enter the posted area. We believe it is unlikely that the eaglet flew very far from the nest. I consulted Brian Mealey, Wildlife Biologist, who said the chick usually stays near the nest at first. He said the adults will reveal the location of the chick Please keep an eye out, as many of us believe that the chick may still be nearby. Brian asked that he be called at [phone withheld] if there is still no sign of the chick by around 3:00 PM today. He would require clearance from FWC to enter the nest, but will be able to provide advice. While the welfare of our nesting eagles is of great concern, your safety is even more important. Birds are better prepared to deal with natural disasters than we are. Once the storm is over and the road conditions are safe to drive, you could inspect your assigned nest(s) for any damage. It's early enough in the season that the loss of eggs or nestlings will be minimal if any, but for sure many nests could give up to the strong winds associated with hurricane Matthew. Check for road conditions prior to departing and avoid flooded roads. Do not venture into water even if it's shallow as there's always the risk of submerged power lines and storm related debris. Please report back to us any fallen nest or damage to the nesting tree or structure as soon as practical via email or by phone. I arrived at the nest at about 9:15 AM to find Alix, who had arrived there at 8:00 AM. He reported that an adult, apparently the female (\"Joy\") was incubating and that her mate never appeared. Since they usually exchange incubation duties about every couple of hours, we continued watching. At 9:38 AM an immature Bald Eagle flew in directly from the west to east, in front of the nest and low over Pines Boulevard. It appears to be a 2nd year bird (a little over a year old) as it had a very dark head and its white was still rather limited to breast and underwing coverts. EDITED/CORRECTED JAN 5 2014: This nest produced one fledgling last year, so it is very likely to be that bird, as older ones would not be as likely to revisit the nest. It is a bit unusual to have one pass through this early in the winter, as most go north until spring, but the South Florida offspring may not migrate as far as those upstate. The adult changed position a few times and tended the nest or repositioned the eggs. We watched until nearly 11:30, but the mate never appeared. Of course, I got a call from Kenny, who had joined us about an hour earlier, that Alix and I had missed the incubation exchange by only a few minutes.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-JAN-5-Immature-Eagle-fly-by-and-I-miss-the-incubation-exchange-td7573301.html","images":5},{"id":"7573302","topic":"7573301","order":2,"title":"Re: Sunday JAN 5-- Immature Eagle fly-by and I miss the incubation exchange","author":"NancyB","date":"2014-01-05T16:34:54.088000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Ken, this may be the fledgling that flew close to the nest tree last year (see May 31, 2013; 4:39 pm - Juvenile eagle over Harbour Lakes to the SE of nest tree), and perhaps the eaglet that was never observed fledging in 2012. As I remember, you received permission to search under the nest tree and did so, but never found the eaglet or evidence that it had perished. (See Mar 30, 2012 NewMexiKen Unsuccessful search for missing eaglet this morning MAR 30). While we didn't want to be overly optimistic about the fate of the eaglet, and even though that eaglet and the parents did not follow some of the same behavior patterns (time remaining at the nest after fledging, adults remaining until after eaglet leaves), stranger things have happened. I believe that I read somewhere that year old fledgings sometimes visit the nest a few times after migrating. Maybe you know where I saw that. Nancy Boyle May 31, 2013; 4:39 pm - Juvenile eagle over Harbour Lakes to the SE of nest tree \"This morning a first-year Bald Eagle soared over the wetlands west of Harbour Lakes subdivision and then circled over that subdivision and its large lake. ...\" Mar 26, 2012; 2:43pm Re: Has Eaglet left the nest? Not seen March 23 You stated: \"On March 23, the first day the nest appeared to be empty, the eaglet was 86 days old, assuming it was the first egg hatched, on January 15. Over the past three seasons, the oldest chick fledged when it was (respectively) 77. 81, and 68 days, an average of 75 (mean 74.5) days of age. The youngest chick fledged (respectively) 79, 91 and 70 days, an average of 80 (mean 80.5) days after the first egg hatched. If we hypothesize that this year's eaglet was not the first hatched, its age of 86 days, while above average, is not outside the range of dates observed for youngest nest-mates in past broods. (See the SUMMARY OF KEY OBSERVATIONS DURING EACH BALD EAGLE BREEDING SEASON (2007-Present) It is now important to determine the welfare of the eaglet. It should be capable of flight and may have relocated some distance away. This could account for the absence of adults at the nest site. In past years, adults were present most of the time during the period when eaglets left the nest. There is the possibility that it was injured or killed, not uncommon during the first days of free flight.\" Mar 30, 2012 NewMexiKen Unsuccessful search for missing eaglet this morning MAR 30","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-JAN-5-Immature-Eagle-fly-by-and-I-miss-the-incubation-exchange-td7573301.html","images":0},{"id":"7573303","topic":"7573301","order":3,"title":"Re: Sunday JAN 5-- Immature Eagle fly-by and I miss the incubation exchange","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-01-05T23:05:03.459000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Sorry for my mistake, but I had such a busy winter last year that I got behind in my record-keeping. The eaglet mortality occurred in the season before last, in 2012. The single eaglet presumably fledged prematurely and was lost. I hoped you might place one of them here on the FORUM for the record. The procedure is rather simple-- I assume the photo is in a folder on your computer. Just start a reply to this message or start a new topic. Then select \"Insert Image\" at the tab just above the message box. This will display a pop-up menu. Click on the \"Choose File\" button and navigate to the photo. Click on the photo file, and then select the size-- the two largest sizes Medium or Big are ideal. It is best not to keep it the original size as it may be too large for the screen. Then before finishing you may check the message in the \"Preview Message\" button below. An alternative and very simple way of uploading a photo that is already posted on an Internet site such as Facebook or Flickr is to simply click on the photo thumbnail to make it full sized, then right-click on the image. Select \"Copy Image URL.\" This will result in an image that begins with \"http\" and has a \".JPG\" file extension. Simply follow the first step above (Insert Image) but instead choose \"Copy and image from the Internet.\" Paste the file you copied inside the box-- be sure it overwrites the \"http://\" that is already in the box. Select \"Big Size\" and simply click on the \"Insert Image\" button at the bottom of the box and PRESTO-- you are finished. Preview the message before posting to be sure is looks the way you want. My impression was that it had a sharp demarcation between a uniformly dark head and neck and the white streaks on its belly. Lisa's photo suggests otherwise. Yet in Lisa's photo this bird looks a bit older than I would expect one from last year's brood to appear. It has a less well-defined dark \"bib\" than expected on a second season bird. The bib has some bold white streaks and there is quite extensive white on its belly. Its bill is already turning yellow and the white streaks on its neck and face extend to the upper head area. A 1+ year old bird should have only a light line over its eye, a darker beak and a fairly uniform dark neck and head in addition to less white on lower belly. In this view I think the plumage pattern of this bird suggests that of a 2+ year old. It could be the same one I photographed earlier that day-- here is another poor photo of mine which, to me, suggested it was only 1+ years old: Its tail is quite long and shows sign of molting into shorter second year feathers, its flight feathers are uniform, not showing signs of ongoing molt, and the secondaries appear worn and rather long, suggesting they could be retained juvenile feathers as seen in a younger (2nd year) bird. That being said, the plumage stages are variable, and they may be based on those of eagles from the more northern reaches of its range. My opinion about the age of this bird is admittedly tentative. Lisa's photo seems to fit the \"White-belly II\" which is the third plumage stage seen in birds that are past 2 years of age (in their third year). Yet there may be variability and even some overlap between the classic stages. For example, some of the newly-fledged birds from this nest have shown more white on their belly and underwings than the field guides indicate. The fact that the bird came directly to the nest is a compelling reason to consider that it may indeed be a second year bird, the one that fledged last year. Maybe all Florida birds to not fit the same pattern as those from Alaska. Our youngsters hatch out in January while those in Alaska and Idaho hatch out in late March or early April. Perhaps the early start accelerates plumage changes. It would be interesting to hear how someone with more experience would analyze these photos. Perhaps Brian Mealey can offer an opinion as to the plumage stage of this bird.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-JAN-5-Immature-Eagle-fly-by-and-I-miss-the-incubation-exchange-td7573301.html","images":1},{"id":"7576307","topic":"7576307","order":1,"title":"SEP 15: Rescued Eaglet (P Piney 26) sighted and photographed!","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2021-09-16T16:51:35.841000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Great news!! You cannot get back to where the nest is without trespassing, but the area certainly looks suitable for continued nesting. Several years back I had posted that I was driving south on I-75 or 826 in Miami and saw an adult eagle flying west-southwest which puts it in this general heading. Also, the Quiet Waters nest is not very far of a flight. It shows the southern (and western) part of this area still covered with vegetation with the disturbed land to the north. I still wonder if there was a fire there during this time frame. Back in those days there was pretty good documentation of nests. Agree that there could be many eagle nests in suitable hammocks (where they exist). Otherwise the Everglades do not provide much suitable habitat for a nest. Also they are known to nest in the coastal mangroves where they may build only a few feet off the ground. Now that the Bald Eagle is no longer endangered there seems less priority (and resources) to continue the aerial searches that formerly were conducted about every three years for each area of Florida.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/female-Taken-nov-7th-around-6-30-pm-td7573746.html","images":0},{"id":"5276052","topic":"5276052","order":1,"title":"[Fwd: FW: Thank you and nest photos]","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-07-09T17:18:31-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Barbara Walker's e-mail is a sober reminder that this could be the fate of the eagle nest tree in Pembroke Pines. I truly appreciate your time and the energy that you put into the environment. I am amazed that you are rescuing woodpeckers in the middle of the night and then up and early for beach clean ups. Doubling potential nesting places for kestrels and tirelessly putting up platforms for ospreys are all in a day's work for you and greatly admired by me. More people should know about the good deeds accomplished by Progress Energy employees. Most of all, the company remains open to public participation in the welfare of wildlife, with communication that goes both ways, and that is truly treasured by advocates and conservationists in this area. Here are some photos taken today by Andrea and me. I've sized them down in case you would like to use any of them. I've included photos of 3 of the nearest pines as well as some habitat available across the water. The area to the north of the plant is very good too. The land across from the power plant is good foraging habitat but I didn't spot any obvious potential nesting trees. Many of the trees in the area of the nest tree are sick, but many appear to be suitable nesting trees. The swan diverters are up, and the poles are capped, and overall this is a good and safe home for Bald Eagles thanks to Progress Energy. Hopefully the trees can be evaluated to find the cause of the sickness and remedied with the goal of new growth/new pines being planted to benefit the eagle population in the long term. The only remaining suggestions I have to improve the area further is for Pasco County to take steps toward lowering the speed limit, and to remove the metal spikes from the poles at the boat ramp as soon as possible, as birds are being impaled. Enhanced trails will be an added benefit and increase safety for locals and tourists who enjoy the many different birds in the area. My reply: Thanks for the update. This has been a very unusual year for the eagles. The wet \"summer-like\" winter seems to have disrupted their normal cycle. Many first broods have failed and several pairs are nesting for a second time. The juvenile eagles s would have normally fledged by now and would have departed northward by the end of May or early June. The few reports I have had about the PSN eagles have been that there was no activity at the nest , usually early in the mornings. I went by only once about two weeks ago in the afternoon and again saw no eagles. Thanks so much for this information. I feared that the construction and increased disturbance from the widened roadway may have discouraged them from breeding. As for the planned construction of the shopping center I have not heard any updates. The official Palm Springs North municipal web site is not very informative.
