It poured early this morning, but we got our to check the eagle nest at about 9:00 AM. We watched for an hour. The adult female was drying her feathers on a Melaleuca trunk west of the nest. The nest appeared empty. We assume there had been a feeding and the eaglet(s) were sleeping. After about 20 minutes the adult flew away to the SE, maybe to hunt or look for her mate. In any event the nest was not guarded for at least 45 minutes, when we finally had to depart. The weight of rain on the branches and lack of wind permitted a good view of the nest, but we never caught sight of an eaglet. I visited the nest this morning about 8:30 AM. The female (Jewel) was roosting next to the nest on the right. I did not notice this at the time, but the smaller eaglet was actually visible below her, behind the branch: After about ten minutes the large eaglet began moving and was readily visible. I thought I saw some movement did get some glimpses of what I thought was a second eaglet over to the right side of the nest. I took over 100 photos and in only one frame was I able to see both eaglets fairly clearly. Look closely to the right, as the smaller one is partially hidden by the pine \"needles\"*: I presume that the first hatched was a female, which is the case about 70% of the time. The female is larger than the male at all stages of life, and female eaglets are more aggressive than males. If the second-hatched is also a female they may fight and there is danger of injury or death to either. A second-hatched male eaglet will usually not compete with a female. This is probably the case here, as the smaller one was staying low and out of the way of his sister. The female-male sequence is associated with the most successful broods. A little later, Phil Martin visited the nest and provided this photo and confirmation that both eaglets are safe and secure. He writes (April 18): Hi Ken, I stopped by the nest today at 11:45 and saw both Eaglets. This is the best photo I could get documenting both. To my surprise, there were no adults at or around the nest. I spoke to a gentleman that told me on Thursday, he saw both adults bathing in the lake behind Pollo Tropical on Pines and 178. Phil He later added-- Yes, the little one was where you saw him. As I looked through my camera I saw the bigger one come over from the center to the spot by the branch. Neither had their head up at the same time. *Australian Pines are not really pines and do not have needles. Dozens of people have come through the park in the past week to take photos of the eagle parents and their eaglet, who peer down on their groupies from a nest high in a tree just outside the boundaries of Quiet Waters Park. Concerned that all this attention could make it more difficult for the eagles to raise their offspring or lead them to abandon the nest, the park has taken several steps to protect them. \"They're supposed to come back to the nest every year, but if they're disturbed they won't come back,\" said Katherine Hendrickson, the park's naturalist. \"We'd like to have them back here. They wouldn't have put their nest in that area if they had a better place to go.\" A bald eagle protection zone has been created, with signs and barriers posted 330 feet away from the nest on one side and 450 feet on the other. Mountain bikers and joggers will still be permitted to use the trail that passes by the nest, since their activities hasn't seemed to disturb the birds, but others will be kept out. What will happen to violators? \"You'll be escorted out of the park,\" Hendrickson. \"We're taking this seriously.\" The Florida Highway Patrol has been alerted about drivers illegally pulling over on Southwest 10th Street for a view of the nest, which was established about eight months ago. It is the second known bald eagle nest in Broward County, with the first located south of Pines Boulevard in Pembroke Pines. Other measures are in the works. Plastic-mesh construction fences are expected to be installed in the next few days. A park staffer will be posted at the entrance to the trail to the nest starting Wednesday. If the eagles appear agitated by the cyclists and joggers – something that hasn't appeared to be the case so far – the trail might be closed until the eagles leave, Hendrickson said. Hellene Grundler, a volunteer with Florida Audubon's EagleWatch program, which monitors nests around the state, says she has seen the mother eagle become upset the presence of people around the nest. On three separate occasions, she said, the mother has approached the nest with a fish for her eaglet, become agitated and dropped the fish. Now is a particularly critical period for the eaglet, she said, because the parents are trying to teach it to find food by enticing it from the nest to take the prey from them. She's said it's vital they be left alone to teach the eaglet how to make his way in the world. \"I love bald eagles,\" she said. \"It's really important that we protect these beautiful birds so if they do come back, they nest again.\" dfleshler@tribune.com, 954-356-4535 Copyright © 2014, South Florida Sun-Sentinel Link to story with VIDEO and photos: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/palm-beach/fl-eagles-deerfield-fences-20140425,0,628997.story","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sun-Sentinel-Article-and-video-Deerfield-Bald-Eagles-get-protection-td7573515.html","images":0},{"id":"5803828","topic":"5803828","order":1,"title":"Eagle incubating Dec 4? I discovered \"our\" eagles one day as I drove by a few months ago and saw all the people watching. Of course I was SOOO excited. (I ramble..sorry) I just moved around the corner from them and want to offer my time to \"baby watch\". I'm pretty flexible on weekends..never during the week. I do have things to get done, but please just give me a time you need me and I can work around it. I love everyone's postings and really appreciate this site. I call it my \"baby\" update. We would like to know when they fly off and hope that if they meet with an accident that someone is watching. One of the eaglets joined it for a while before the parent flew away (photos added to my slideshow.) After the parent left, the eaglet remained at the Australian Pine spot until at least 6:45pm. During that time it posed for us and also was continually attacked by the grackles (photos of this also added to slideshow.) After yesterday, I expected to bake in the sun today and be lucky to see one eagle far, far away in the dead trees, but it was not like that at all. When I arrived at 4:25, an adult was on the favorite pine tree to the east and there was hardly a minute the whole time I was there that there was not an eagle somewhere to watch and photograph. A big treat was when a juvenile flew to the same tree and watched its parent for quite some time. A couple of times when my foot got crampy and I sat down in my chair, I could just sit and see one eaglet on the nest and another on the tree to the east with my binocs without even standing up. The big bonus today was with Smith's interpreting for me the manual for my camera and some pointers from Mike, I actually got some pictures I'm quite happy with. I think I took over 200, so it will take some time to go through them, delete the bad ones, and crop some of the good ones. I had never seen the grackles harassing the eagles before today. That was very interesting. Smith and I left at about 7:10 and headed for Long Key to see the roosting birds. Unfortunately, the in gate was closed and locked. An employee told us that they close at 7:30. I will try to insert one that I like.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Wednesday-5-00pm-to-7-00pm-td2680680.html","images":1},{"id":"2682203","topic":"2680680","order":3,"title":"Re: Wednesday 5:00pm to 7:00pm","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2009-04-23T06:37:51.481000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"What a gorgeous shot, Jill! He mentioned how wonderful Long Key was, and even had a fabulous photo that he had taken of the tree covered in white birds of various species. Now I really do have to get out there! The presentation was wonderful - he had a extensive variety of birds photographed mostly by himself. They were organized and discussed so that the students could learn to identify and differentiate between various Herons and Egrets. The kids loved it, and had lots of questions to ask. I checked the trees from the corner of 208th Avenue to the dead melaleucas north of 209th to no avail. I thought I might be hearing a distant bleating call of an eaglet, but as I got closer it was either a Red-shouldered Hawk or a Blue Jay imitating one. Likewise, I put the binoculars on any flying bird to be sure it was not something other than a vulture. It was probably wishful thinking. I did get photos of a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks on the light standard at Pines & 209th, and a pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers near 208th. In past years we have documented the eaglet(s) returning to the nest or vicinity of the nest tree to feed and/or roost multiple times after fledging (sometimes disappearing for the first 2-4 days). These visits were recorded within an interval of 32 to 59 days after fledging. I kept watching and saw a tiny little head lift up and look towards the adult at 10:45am. Fortunately, Jerome had just arrived with his powerful camera and we easily saw the eaglet as he took many pictures! Such a thrill to see that one little one! I called Ken (in Illinois) and he was equally excited and said that we need to watch for more heads as the hatchings can be 3 days apart. It would better to have multiple siblings. When you observe the nest, it looks like there are some white feathers and remains of a meal on the right side of the nest...I almost confused that with an eaglet. Ken suggested that taking a video of the nest is the best way to observe the tiny movement that can indicate a new eaglet. My images are very fuzzy, and it was windy, so the trees kept covering the nest, but in several images there is clear proof of our new Pembroke Pines resident eagle! You should crop and edit the photo as desired, and save it with a file name that is easily recognized. (There is another alternative that I use, which is to copy image URLs from photos I have already placed on FLICKR.) Just click on the \"Insert Image\" button above your post, and then select \"Choose File.\" This will allow you to search your hard drive and select the desired photo. After you select your image, you need to re-size it as it will probably be too big to display on the computer screen. Pick the \"Medium\" or \"Big\" size and allow the image to \"float.\" Then click on \"Insert Image.\" This places a line of Nabble code in your message. Over five breeding seasons, since 2008, I have collected information about their breeding activities. Dozens of other nest watchers who have an interest in protecting their habitat and learning about the eagles' behavior contribute their ground observations to my Pembroke Pines Eagle Nest Watch FORUM , and I compile the data to obtain a broader picture of their breeding biology. Here is a spreadsheet and a table comparing milestone events in each breeding cycle. Watching an eagle at its nest can be like watching grass grow. Yet, sometimes subtle behavioral changes can signal important events, such as the laying of the first egg and its hatching. Although our attention may be focused on the eagle, we are not oblivious to other happenings. Once a hummingbird appeared at the nest and perched right in front of an eagle as it was incubating. It was so interesting to ponder the difference in size between these two extremes that I totally forgot that I had a camera! Another time, an Osprey angrily followed an eagle that was carrying a fish to the nest site. Undoubtedly, the eagle had stolen its meal. Rather than flying directly to the nest, the eagle circled and flew off out of sight, emerging a few minutes later with the fish but without the Osprey. However, I was lucky enough to capture some unexpected scenes. Most recently was an encounter between several Fish Crows and a Merlin, just one day after the single eaglet had fledged and disappeared. The crows were harassing one of the adult eagles as it was roosting near the nest. I interpreted this a a possible attempt to distract the eagle so that others of the flock could steal remains of prey that the adult had left in the nest to attract the missing youngster. The crows repeatedly dived down just over the eagle's head whenever the eagle was occupied with preening. The eagle seemed only mildly disturbed. Just after I photographed one of the crows there was a rush of wings from behind me. A Merlin was in full pursuit of the crow. I must apologize for the poor quality of my photos as the light was harsh and I did not have time to switch my shutter settings. The crow headed for the Merlin's favorite roosting place, but had to yield its perch under attack. The crow actually started out after the Merlin! The battle went on for several minutes, the crow intent on returning to the falcon's favored roost. Finally the crows relented and the Merlin settled down. A couple of days before, a Cattle Egret stole my attention as it chased after Halloween Pennant dragonflies. The egret stealthily crept up on an insect (Click on the image to see the location of its prey). Success! (Note that the egret has pinkish-orange breeding plumes). Other incidental sightings of note include this Swallow-tailed Kite that passed directly over the eagle nest. A pair of Red-shouldered Hawks courted on a tall light fixture nearby. A dark morph Short-tailed Hawk, ready to pounce upon any unsuspecting smaller bird disguised itself by soaring in a flock of vultures. A Sharp-shinned Hawk raced overhead. A flock of Cedar Waxwings once appeared against a rainy sky. A Palm Warbler visited as I watched the nest, up close and personal. Flocks of long-legged waders, such as these Wood Storks, flew overhead. A colony of Monk Parakeets occupied a nest on a light pole across the street from the nest. An oddity was this Northern Mockingbird with a badly deformed bill. It was singing vigorously as I took its picture. A Gray Squirrel tight-roped across in front of the eagle nest. Some of the sightings must be classified as \"un-natural.\"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Finding-other-birds-while-watching-the-eagle-nest-Blog-td7573039.html","images":27},{"id":"7575325","topic":"7575325","order":1,"title":"August 8, 10, 13 and 14: Adults over west Miramar","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2019-08-14T15:50:11.251000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Adult eagles are flying over the wetlands of west Miramar almost every morning around sunrise. They have flight cages which permit the juvenile eagles to perfect their flight skills so they are at much less risk when they take their first free flight. I do know that some birds which are too impaired to survive in the wild have been used for educational purposes, but am not aware that they send any healthy birds to zoos. As for creating an artificial nest, my feeling is that the eagles are quite site-specific and might utilize one. The failed nest is about 80 feet above ground and not accessible by a bucket truck unless a new road were to be cut through the woodlands. A pole with a platform would need to be ridiculously tall and strong, and would entail much disturbance and expense even if feasible. A pole could not have guide line supports as these would pose a hazard to flying birds. I think they abandoned their previous nest because it was low down and overgrown with other exotic trees such as Melaleuca. They had to fly through obstacles to reach the nest and it did not provide a view of the surroundings. Eagles prefer to occupy the highest tree in their territory. I wonder if they might return to the old nest if the impinging trees could be removed around the perimeter of the nest. Might be worth exploring, but not feasible this season. I wonder what the experts might think of this. It is on City property and they have been supportive of protection for the nest and residents are proud of their local eagles.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MAY-1-Update-from-Pelican-Harbor-td7576172.html","images":0},{"id":"7576178","topic":"7576172","order":6,"title":"Re: MAY 1: Update from Pelican Harbor","author":"naturegirl","date":"2021-05-01T14:11:17.729000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Thanks Ken for the clarification and update","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MAY-1-Update-from-Pelican-Harbor-td7576172.html","images":0},{"id":"7573384","topic":"7573384","order":1,"title":"Saturday FEB 1 -- No feeding 8:15 to 10:30 AM","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-02-01T14:09:56.226000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"I arrived at the eagle nest at 8:15 AM this morning and watched until 10:35. Early on there was very little activity in the nest. One eaglet popped up briefly a few times for the first hour or so, then both appeared and seemed active. We thought they may be feeding themselves a few times. The female then flew out from the west and passed in front of the nest, rose and disappeared to the southeast. As I moved nearer I could see that there were two adults and a second year juvenile. The juvenile can be seen in the upper right corner of this photo. The male eagle is flying to a perch and the female is at lower right. The adults chased the youngster and he flew up and circled, still quite far away for good photos. It appears to be in second year plumage. The two adults roosted in the grove of herbicide-killed Melaleucas on the far side of the wet prairie. The smaller of the two perched up higher. I took comparable photos from several positions of each from a range of 650 to 400 feet, using the same crop factor so that I could compare their size and shape. Male eagle at 500 feet range: Female at same range-- she is obviously quite bigger: At 7:47 AM the female started calling and flew up and roosted just behind the male. At 7:58 AM the female flew to a higher perch about 100 feet farther along the grove of dead trees. She assumed a receptive position and both eagles kept calling as the male flew and briefly mounted her. They did not copulate, and the male then quickly flew to a nearby snag and at 8:00 AM flew off to the north. The female roosted a while longer, then at 8:02 flew up and circled to the north, carrying a small branch. From the distinctive undertail markings when she sliced, I identified the female as Jewel, from the Pembroke Pines nest which is 1.4 miles to the NW. Note the two fine streaks under the tail and a few dark feathers among undertail coverts. Jewel also has distinctive markings at the base of her uppertail coverts. The male is presumably Pride, her mate. This behavior, and the fact that the pair has not spent much time at or near the nest over more than a week and that there is no evidence of survival of the eaglet that hatched on or about JAN 17 (which the adult was photographed feeding on JAN 19) lead me to conclude that the nest has been abandoned.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Pride-and-Jewel-fight-off-immature-eagle-1-4-miles-SE-of-nest-td7574378.html","images":14},{"id":"7574379","topic":"7574378","order":2,"title":"Re: Pride and Jewel fight off immature eagle 1.4 miles SE of nest","author":"johnnye","date":"2016-01-30T09:39:16.438000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"There was an eagle on the melaleucas again this morning, Saturday. That is interesting about the new male at the nest. Of course it is possible that the old male happened to get banded during the non-breeding season. Eagles mate for life, and I've read that there may be different scenarios if one of the pair dies. It is said that if the female dies the male holds on to the territory and attracts a new mate to the nest. If the male dies, the female often deserts the nest in search of a mate. Another possibility is that an interloper displaces one of the pair. Sometimes a younger female tries to displace the female of an established pair. They may fight to the death, as nearly happened to the older female in Pinellas County, near Tampa, Florida. Two females, one male bald eagle fight over mating nest - Tampa Bay Times According to officials at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland — eaglespeak for the hospital — the man-stealing flirt held the other bird down, plucked her feathers and almost killed her. Here is a copied and pasted article I and others were interviewed about regarding animal harassment (it was in the palm beach post last week ) Here is the article - The great horned owls chose poorly when they nested in the C-6 parking lot at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge – a conspicuous location that attracted some ill-mannered fans, and, ultimately, prompted a 911 call. It’s a convenient spot for the owls, a nest abandoned by red-shouldered hawks, and in a soaring oak tree good for spotting prey. But the perch, which is also near a popular pavilion, put the big raptors on display for everyone from avian paparazzi to looky-loos curious about the hubbub. A late January hatching of owlets heightened the clamor at the refuge west of Boynton Beach. “I have heard people were using laser pointers, played recorded owl calls to try and get them to look a certain way, and there was a man hooting at the bottom of the nest,” said Rolf Olson, a project leader at the refuge. “We have thousands of acres the owls can nest in, and in a lot of it they would never see a person, but for some reason, they chose a nest right here where the people are.” Refuge employees set up a barricade at the oak tree's drip line Jan. 27 to minimize owl harassment. A week later, the commotion escalated. “There was an altercation between some non-owl people and owl people,” Olson said. “At that point, we just closed the area.” Officials had to put up a barricade to keep people out of a pavilion where great horned owls were nesting at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. GREG LOVETT / PALM BEACH POST Nature lovers gone wild It’s not the first time the Loxahatchee Refuge – the last remaining intact piece of the northern Everglades – has had to wrangle swarms of nature lovers like nightclub bouncers at red velvet ropes. In 2018, a popular fishing area was closed temporarily after alligators accustomed to getting free meals from humans became aggressive, chasing one man, and trying to jump in the boat of another. Before that, Olson remembers another pair of owls that nested near the main road of the refuge, causing traffic jams. People taking pictures used flashes in the dark that sparked as bright as a lightning storm, Olson said. “Who doesn’t want to see owls or baby owls? We understand,” said Loxahatchee Park Ranger Veronica Kelly about the current nest in lot C-6. “But there were hordes of photographers over there.” Bob Gibson, a former advertising executive turned photographer and teacher, said he was taught early on about the ethics of nature photography when he was scolded after getting too close to a nest. And while it is tempting to play bird sounds on your cellphone to get an animal’s attention, the Tequesta resident now follows strict rules – limited use of flashes, no bird calls, no treats to attract the animals and no social media posts publicizing a nest’s location. “Instagram and Facebook are so powerful that within days you can attract a group of people,” Gibson said. “The idea is to hike quietly through nature and when you come upon something beautiful, don’t disrupt its life.” A man shoots photographs from the boardwalk of Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach last year. Still, he said people come from all over the country to popular parks like Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach and Green Cay Nature Center and Wetlands in suburban Boynton Beach where boardwalks take visitors extra close to nesting birds. In some cases, repeat nesters have grown accustomed to the audience, said Scott Zucker, president of Audubon Everglades in Palm Beach County. He said that’s particularly true at Wakodahatchee, where people may get the wrong impression that it’s OK to get right next to a nest because the birds there aren’t overly disturbed by people. Baby wood storks peek out of their nest under the protective cover of their mother at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach in March 2018. It’s not unusual to see 30 photographers elbow-to-elbow at Wakodahatchee or Green Cay, Gibson said. “I don’t think there are roving gangs of bad photographers, but, like anything, people that work at these parks, or are regulars, are very protective of the animals,” he said. 'It's about having that perfect shot' In 2016, Green Cay had a similar experience as the Loxahatchee Refuge with a pair of screech owls that nested in a hollow palm tree trunk that was about three feet from the boardwalk. Photographers brought long sticks so they could get pictures down into the tree cavity, they moved palm fronds out of the way to expose the hollow, and used flashes “right in the owls’ faces,” said Bobby Seals, a Green Cay Nature Center manager. “One day, someone brought a ladder and walked it all the way out onto the boardwalk,” Seals said. “For some people, it's not about the experience or the animals, it's about having that perfect shot.” Green Cay put up a lattice fence to protect the owls. People could still look through it, but not pester the nest. “There were quite a few verbal confrontations between people who had issues with what the other people were doing,” Seals said. Boca Raton resident Staci-Lee Sherwood remembers getting into an argument with a photographer who wanted her to move so he could get a better picture of the screech owls at Green Cay. At 5-foot-2, she said the man could easily shoot over her head. “They were standing on the railings throwing things at the tree to get the screech owls to pop their heads out,” said Sherwood, a nature lover who worked counting sea turtle nests for several years. “Most of the people are respectful, but not everyone.” When Sherwood heard about the nest at Loxahatchee, she wanted to check it out. Great horned owls are particularly popular. They are the largest Florida owl, and known for being aggressive. They often lay their eggs in abandoned nests, or outright steal nests from other birds, including bald eagles. As raptors, they are protected by federal and state law. Although the great horned owl nest is in a tree next to a sidewalk, Sherwood thought it was obscured enough by branches to deter photographers. Instead, she saw them using hawk calls to get a reaction. “Hawks and owls do not get along,\" Sherwood said. \"We want everyone to appreciate nature. We just can’t trust that everyone is going to behave.\" It’s especially harmful to disturb a bird when it is fledging chicks because it is constantly hunting for food, feeding the young or cleaning the nest, said Kelly, the Loxahatchee park ranger. Owls, which are mostly nocturnal, will hunt through the day when they have babies to feed, making them more visible — a treat for Audubon enthusiasts. It was near 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4 when some people pulled into C-6 and began playing music that the crowd gathered to view the owls thought was too loud. Someone called 911, noting th10 to 12 people were involved in what a dispatcher said sounded like an “escalating” situation. Olson said the refuge’s federal wildlife officers were able to defuse the argument, but it did trigger the closure of the parking area and pavilion. “We're a national wildlife refuge. Wildlife comes first,\" Olson said.
