When we arrived, the female was roosting in its usual spot in the tall Australian Pine to the east of the nest. A work crew had just arrived and they proceeded to excavate with a bobcat shovel right in front of the roosting bird. The crew had to find a water main line, which they did within about an hour. The bird appeared not to pay any attention to the noise and activity. After about 20 minutes the male arrived with a white bird, and fed it to the chicks. As usual, Hope ate first while Justice kept to the far left (east) side of the nest, away from his sibling and the adult. Justice even spent most of the time looking the other way! Then, after 10 minutes or so, Justice moved in and seemed to share the meal amicably. In the meantime, the female flew off while we were concentrating on the action in the nest. The male then flew over to the same tree, cleaned its bill and preened. not paying attention to the work crew. Hope was particularly active, jumping almost 2 feet into the air. Justice also did some flapping after the larger chick settled down. Al joined us and stayed after we departed. Annie and Steve called to say they had watched earlier (7:00 - 9:00), and they reported the birds were very active and that they had been fed by the female, which then roosted in the tree where we found her upon our arrival, just after they had left the site. We stapled the signs (in English and Spanish) advising what to do if an eaglet falls to the ground.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Watching-this-morning-9-15-11-00-td2534493.html","images":2},{"id":"2376057","topic":"2376057","order":1,"title":"I will try to monitor on weekdays after 5 pm.","author":"Jesus Hoyos","date":"2009-02-23T22:50:51.071000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I have noticed that many spectators also come to watch the bald eagles on the weekdays, and due to this I will volunteer to monitor the nest area on weekdays between 5 to 6 pm.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/I-will-try-to-monitor-on-weekdays-after-5-pm-td2376057.html","images":0},{"id":"2377352","topic":"2376057","order":2,"title":"Re: I will try to monitor on weekdays after 5 pm.","author":"Kelly Smith","date":"2009-02-24T06:19:19.228000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thank you Jesus! Probably no cause for alarm, but please let us know if anyone sees the second eaglet) Phil's photo: Interestingly, I saw an adult Bald Eagle early this morning (April 17), in west Miramar wetlands about 1.5 miles southeast of the nest, flying in the direction of the nest and carrying an unidentified prey item. Based on its large body, long wings and the lack of a black outer tail feather, I think this was the Pembroke Pines female (Jewel). She passed right over my head at 7:10 AM, which is less than 15 minutes after sunrise, against a rather dark cloudy sky. At ISO 16,000 and shutter speed of 1/2000 second, the photos are very poor. On April 16, just around sunrise at 6:52 AM, this immature Bald Eagle flew over in west Miramar. It traveled directly to south from north. It appears to be an early second year bird (just over one year old) as evidenced by molting of flight feathers, white-ish \"wingpits\", dark head and rather uniform white blotcchingof breast and belly.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/APRIL-17-Second-eaglet-not-seen-again-td7575540.html","images":4},{"id":"7574840","topic":"7574840","order":1,"title":"JAN 28: Photos of eaglet","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-01-28T12:03:19.125000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"I arrived at the nest at about 9:10 AM this morning. So I got a few shots of mama sitting in cognito and then she spotted papa flying way up high and I got a shot of him flying by but it was way up there ( In the glider lingo we call it being \"Specked Out\") so it's not that great of a shot, then he finally came to relieve her from nest duties and gave her a rest and let her go thermalling and hopefully get a bite to eat since he didn't think to bring her anything to eat like a good partner would . The last shot is of him on the nest and then settling in for a while. Looks a little grumpy. Overall the nest seems to be doing okay, but they will need to stay on top of it and hope and pray no strong fronts come through, a SW wind would be the worst I think. They will need to keep adding to it all season especially if they have more than 1 egg in the nest. Ken arrived about 09:50 and he began to take photos. Several people stoped to observe and talk, which was good ,because one parked in the no parking . At about 10:45 we called it a day. Upon my return home I again reviewed the disc , and I'm glad to report there are still three. I'm calling the smallish chick , number three, because it is much smaller than one and two. The side of the nest toward the observers appears to be built up a bit higher than last year, so it is a good idea to watch for a while before deciding that the nest is empty. Based on last year's experience, we should expect the eggs to be covered almost 100% of the time. Alan joined us a bit later. He had seen and photographed an adult roosting in the melaleucas a little before 7:00 AM this morning. We believe it had a brown tip on its tail feathers, but he will process the photos to be sure. The male adult (Pride) was incubating deep in the nest, but we did not see his mate (Jewel). He called out a couple of times and we assume Jewel was roosting behind the nest out of sight. After about 10 minutes she suddenly flew in from behind the nest and made a couple of passes in front of the nest before landing on it upwind from behind. Jewel, noticeably larger than Pride, is on the left: The two adults spent only 90 seconds on the nest together, looking down. Just before Pride flew up, he picked up some small object, possibly prey remains or waste, but dropped it. The greater the number of observations, the more significant the findings will be. Let's all encourage the students as they learn to apply the scientific method. Instructions: 1. Print out several copies of this Eagle Nest Observational Checklist (PDF) , to record your observations in the field. 2. Then, either bring your copy to Ms Kelly Smith, or return to the computer screen and enter the data into the appropriate fields 3. When finished, you may either print out a hard copy, or e-mail the form to Ms Smith directly, simply by selecting the envelope at the top of Adobe Reader-- or, \"Attach to E-Mail\" from the \"File\" menu. It is not possible to save the completed form to disk, so if you want to keep a record, be sure to make a printout as well. I do not know if it was a problem with my Adobe Reader (Version 9.2.0)-- it did NOT have the envelope icon for e-mailing-- I had to use the \"File\" menu and select \"Send as E-Mail Attachment.\" Since I have a PDF printer installed, I simply printed it in PDF and saved to disk, then e-mailed the file to Ms Smith as an attachment. The only other way I could send it would be to print a hard copy and then scan it and e-mail the file, which is a bit cumbersome. If successful, the first egg is usually laid in 7-14 days. At this nest there was documentation of the events during four breeding seasons. First egg was laid betweem 5 and 14 days after copulation, average of 10.5 days (median 11.5 days). Since copulation can be unsuccessful and often occurs severl times before the eggs are laid, two other observations of 18 and 27 days were not included in the calculation. As these are ground-based observations, egg-laying is inferred from their behavior-- when the female settles down deep and rarely leaves the nest. Tending the eggs and exchange of incubation duties are subsequent observations which increase the certainty after eggs have been deposited. This morning (JAN 8) both members of the pair gathered nest materials. I arrived at about 7:20 AM and at first the nest was empty. Soon a very large stick was carried in from behind the nest shortly after I arrived. I do not know which member of the pair carried it, but it wasso long that it posed a challenge which both struggled to solve. They actually cooperated in moving the stick higher up into the nest structure: In this photo the female (Jewel) is to the left of her mate Pride : The male is on the left in this photo: Jewel made fewer flights. Here she is carrying in a stick: Pride can be identified by some damage to the (about) 6th secondary feather (counting out from his body) in left wing. His tail feathers are also a bit pigmented or stained.: More photos of Pride carrying sticks:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-5-Copulation-JAN-8-Both-adults-carrying-sticks-td7575759.html","images":10},{"id":"7575780","topic":"7575780","order":1,"title":"JAN 20: Possibly incubating","author":"JesseG8r","date":"2021-01-21T11:15:40.392000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"I stopped by briefly yesterday around 12:30. Again, she writes (3/14/16): Hi Ken, I wrote to you about this beginning of Feb., and last weekend on my way to and from the Keys I saw the eagle on that light pole both times. I sent this message (below) with eBird link to FWC and they will send a guy from FWRI out to check because they have no record of a nest there: For the 3rd time (1/31/16, 3/12/16, 3/13/16) we've seen an adult perched on the same extremely tall (highest one there) light fixture on the south side of the turnpike at Calder Racetrack between the E-W turnpike extension (from the Keys, just before it joins the northbound turnpike), and the boxy old \"hotel\" on the south side. The coordinates are on this eBird checklist's map link. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S28154447 I had assumed its nest would be in the nice pinelands on the north/Broward side, but this time I think I saw sticks in a metal dish on top, next to the eagle. Can't miss it even from a moving vehicle. Regards, Billi My Reply: Interesting! Do you have any idea as to where someone might safely park and view the light pole? I am not familiar with the area. From the location you provide at the link in your eBird report, it seems that the best way would be to enter from SW 41st Street (SR 852) at NW 215th Street, west of the Turnpike and then turn south into the race track entrance. I am not sure whether this is a restricted area. Your coordinates [[precise coordinate withheld],[precise coordinate withheld]] show the pole to be located immediately inside the entrance road. If the eagles have an active nest, their young would probably ready to fledge or have done so already.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Possible-nest-at-SW-41st-St-amp-NW-215th-Street-NW-Dade-Miami-Broward-County-line-td7574423.html","images":0},{"id":"7574429","topic":"7574423","order":2,"title":"Re: [specific nest-location detail withheld] NW Dade-Miami/Broward County line","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2016-03-20T14:02:16.637000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Billi Wagner has provided a more exact location of the possible \"Race Track\" eagle nest near the Broward/Miami-Dade County line. Billi writes: I just looked at the map and probably put the marker a little too far east. Open the map link on the checklist in \"satellite\" form, and blow it up: there are light poles casting super long shadows NW, in a row of palms along SW 41st paralleling the racetrack, it has to be one of those, it seemed to be the tallest one, and it should have something on top of the light cluster. There are other, shorter light poles with a curved piece extending out. They are for the turnpike. This style is called \"Cobra\": the light itself is like the head of a serpent sticking out. I don't know what you could see from the ground, maybe you can go up the grandstand with a scope? I replied (MAR 15): There are two very tall poles, one on either side of this small parking area and bus stop at this location. Do you think one of these may contain the sticks/nest? The new coordinates are: [[precise coordinate withheld], [precise coordinate withheld]] and the Google Earth address is: [specific street address withheld] Miramar, FL 33023 Billi then said: They look good, they are past the Stadium Hotel, and on the south side of the eastbound lane of the turnpike. The only other similar, really tall light poles I can see are clustered around the N-S turnpike lanes east of the horse barns, which are near the racetrack entrance road. I can see 4 lights on all of these poles, but not any other structure on them that could hold a nest, like I saw Sunday. She documented a very interesting aspect of the eagle's nest building behavior. Here is Trisha's own narrative: The determined looking adult flew to a dead tree not too far from the nest tree and landed, only staying for a very brief time. The next photos show the purpose of this short flight as the eagle collects a stick to contribute to the rebuilding of the nest for this years breeding season. With the desired branch in its sight, the eagle dives and twists to grab it. With a very loud crack the branch is broken off. With the branch detached from the tree, the adult begins the short trip back to the nest. If bureaucrats had selected this nesting site for the eagles, I would be very angry with them about their poor planning. The eagles were smart enough to place their nest on public land in a city that had already declared itself as a bird sanctuary. The city promptly fenced and posted the area, and the power company placed warning devices on the lines and insulated the poles before even being asked by eagle lovers.
