Tom and Ed started photographing earlier and said that the chicks fed a little before 9:00 AM. Ed also photographed a two deer, a buck and a doe, south of the corner of Pines and 208th. An adult brought in fresh hay for the nest around 10:00 and briefly roosted on the Australian Pine to the east, then flew back over the cow pasture, landed on the ground. We thought he might have caught something, but came back empty-clawed. They still had not been fed again by the time we left around 11:30. The chicks became very active. Hope leaped as high as three feet at times. We have seen him land there several times before. I watched and tried to photograph him. This is the best photo I was able to get. I did observe that he goes there to drink the water that puddles up there. He only remained for a couple minutes, at most. Than he took off north over Pines Blvd. He narrowly missed being struck by a truck that was traveling east. Pride circled around and returned to the nest. Eaglet is about 65 days old. Flapping wings but no branching or helicoptering observed during my limited visit. Based upon ground observer reports of the eagles' behavior, we believe that the first egg hatched on or about March 16. Counting backwards 5 weeks (35 days) establishes February 10 as the approximate day the first egg was laid. This is also borne out in retrospect, based upon suspicions of observers who reported behavior of the pair on or about that date. Therefore we may assume that the surviving eaglet is about 65 days old. Referring to the summary of past broods, the first eaglet fledges at an average age of about 75 days (range of 62 to 86 days). Therefore we should expect its first flight very soon with branching and helicoptering beginning about a week sooner. These statistics are derived from our limited experience at this one nest (with a different female parent) and are highly variable.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MAY-20-2016-Eaglet-is-about-65-Days-old-watch-for-helicoptering-branching-td7574509.html","images":1},{"id":"2521768","topic":"2521768","order":1,"title":"Steve and Annie will watch 7-9 AM Tues-Wed-Thur-Fri-Sun this week","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-03-23T11:39:39.750000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Steve and Annie said they will watch 7-9 AM Tues-Wed-Thur-Fri-Sun this week. Pride may already be out scouting for a new mate. The good thing is that if he finds one he is likely to lure her into his territory. I think this patch of woods is about the only suitable place for a few miles around, so maybe they will nest nearby. If she likes this nest she may even move in there. It seems unlikely that a new female would breed this season, but who can predict? On Friday JAN 10 I watched the nest for over an hour from before 9:00 until after 10:00 AM. There were high winds although it was not very cold (about 70F). I assumed that one of the adults was deep in the nest but I never was able to see the top of a head or movement between the nest sticks. My assumption was that the birds were \"hunkering down\" as the trees and branches swayed rather violently. I was concerned that some of the nest material had fallen off the right (west) side of the nest: On Saturday (JAN 11) I arrived at 10:40 and watched until 11:10 AM. Both adults were on the nest. The male (Pride) was over on the right side and appeared to be tearing at a prey item and also moving his head down as if possibly feeding an eaglet as the female (Jewel) looked on: Jewel then flew up to roost to the right of the nest, while Pride started moving sticks: Jewel flew down and the two adults worked together moving sticks: They briefly exchanged bill-snapping as if they did not agree on where to place a stick (Pride is to the left): When I departed they both were resting high in the nest (Pride is to the right behind Jewel):","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/High-winds-buffet-nest-JAN-4-10-restoration-JAN-11-td7575478.html","images":7},{"id":"7574472","topic":"7574472","order":1,"title":"APR 16: Remarkable news-- TWO Eaglets reported today","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2016-04-16T14:41:40.069000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Phil Martin texted to say: \"At 09:15 today I saw and photographed both eaglets. The parent landed on a power pole east of the nest for a short stop, and then flew further east across the road. During the morning one young seemed ready to leave the nest, head leaning forward and flapping into the SE wind. One year it hatched on the 34th day. I got to the nest at 10:30 AM. Al had reported that the female took over incubation/brooding at 9:45 AM and settled down looking to the west. Now she was in the nest facing east. Part of her back was visible, maybe a bit higher than usual and her tail was pointing up at about a 45 degree angle, which to me looked unusually high. Might she already be tenting by leaning forward and resting on her \"elbows\" to protect a newly hatched eaglet? However nothing about her behavior suggested she was tending to a chick. She shifted position a bit, quartering towards and then away, but kept facing generally east the entire time I watched, until 11:48 when she pointed her bill up and called briefly. The male finally flew directly in from the west at 12:20 PM. He immediately picked up a trashy looking object (prey remains?) and deposited it on the far left side of the outer wall of the nest. The female sat tight for a minute or so, then she got up and flew off to the west at 12:20 to roost on a dead Melaleuca and preen. She flew off to the SE at 12:31. Although it is possible that a chick is pipping the egg, I would have expected more attention being paid by both parents if one has hatched. Phil came by just before the exchange and said that he noticed the female pointing her tail high for the past 4 or 5 days, so I really do not know its significance. Lets keep a sharp eye out. When the eaglet hatches the male may tend to linger at or near the nest more than usual and there should be better evidence of tending to the offspring. Often both parents may come and look down at it.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Friday-JAN-10-Exchange-of-duties-at-12-20-PM-td7573310.html","images":8},{"id":"7573311","topic":"7573310","order":2,"title":"Re: Friday JAN 10 Exchange of duties at 12:20 PM","author":"Lisa G","date":"2014-01-10T22:53:51.474000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Ken Great pictures thanks for the update","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Friday-JAN-10-Exchange-of-duties-at-12-20-PM-td7573310.html","images":0},{"id":"7573517","topic":"7573517","order":1,"title":"Introducing Helene","author":"NancyB","date":"2014-05-01T10:22:33.396000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"As the Web Designer and Editor for the South Florida Audubon Society (SFAS) Website, I take pleasure in introducing Hellene to this forum. We arrived there around 9:30AM and found two other watchers present. Up to that point the nest was empty and no eagles had been sighted. At 9:50 an adult suddenly appeared on the nest, having flown into the wind from behind. It immediately began eating what looked like very fresh bloody prey. It was possibly the male adult, judging by the low forehead (little angle between beak and forehead). This is the expected behavior of the adults after the eaglet leaves the nest. Hunger will normally drive the youngster to return to the nest to be fed within 2-3 days-- at least that has been our experience. We heard no vocalizations to suggest the presence of the eaglet. If you can get to see the nest even for short periods of time, it will be important in helping us determine the welfare of the eaglet, as the first flight carries quite a high risk of injury or mortality. Listen for the calls of the eaglet, especially as adults arrive at the nest with prey. Notice whether the adults seem to be looking down at a certain place for an extended period of time, which might indicate that the eaglet is grounded. Normally the eaglet will climb up to the upper branches of one of the trees in the local wooded area, then travel back to the nest by taking short flights from one treetop to another. At about 85 days of age, this eaglet should have been well prepared for flight, even though she did not appear to be as active and did not climb up on branches for 2-3 days before fledging, as we have seen in the past.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eaglet-not-present-on-nest-this-morning-9-30-10-15-AM-td7572991.html","images":3},{"id":"7572992","topic":"7572991","order":2,"title":"Re: Eaglet not present on nest this morning 9:30-10:15 AM","author":"hall48","date":"2013-03-27T15:15:56.239000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"Super pictures Ken. An interesting issue that the Bald Eagle Sanctuary steering committee members discussed with Mayor Ortis is the duration of such designation of the land containing the eagle nest. Understandably, the Mayor made it clear that the City had no plans to turn the valuable property over to any third party. Rather, the eagle's nest, roosting trees and its territory would be officially designated and posted as a City sanctuary, but it would be protected under the proposed Bald Eagle Ordinance. There would be no land transfer, and the City would be constrained by the restrictions on development already in force under federal and state laws and guidelines. What would happen if the eagles fail to return to breed next year? As you all know, a Bald Eagle generally mates for life and keeps returning to the same territory, and usually to the same nest or another within its territory. Brian Mealy pointed out that if the female of the pair dies, the male usually stays in the same territory and promptly attracts a new mate. However, if the female loses its mate, she normally pairs up with a male who then brings her to its existing territory, or selects its own territory. In the event that the nest is abandoned, and there is no active alternate nest within the sanctuary, the draft ordinance proposes to continue the designation of the sanctuary for five years after abandonment, unless there is another active Bald Eagle nest within two miles of the abandoned nest. This policy would be consistent with the Florida FWC Bald Eagle Management Plan and Guidelines.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/What-if-the-eagles-do-not-return-next-season-td3038435.html","images":0},{"id":"3040156","topic":"3038435","order":2,"title":"Re: What if the eagles do not return next season","author":"Lisa baumbach Reardon,","date":"2009-06-07T17:20:26.548000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"this seems fair to me ...","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/What-if-the-eagles-do-not-return-next-season-td3038435.html","images":0},{"id":"4252590","topic":"4252590","order":1,"title":"Question for the Experts","author":"Linda954","date":"2010-01-04T18:13:35.388000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"How is this frigin weather affecting the incubation period. Both male and female develop brood patches to keep the eggs warm. Even up north, the eagles nest quite early in the year, and they often must protect their eggs against sub-freezing temperatures. I do not think that the expected 35 day incubation time would be significantly affected by the cold weather. I found this on the Journey North page-- lots more interesting information there: Bald Eagle Nesting Phenology Incubating Eggs: 35 days As soon as the first egg is laid, the female and the male take turns incubating. Both male and female eagles form a brood patch--a bare spot on their tummy where they can press their hot skin directly against the eggs or chicks to keep them warm. The female's brood patch is a little bigger and more feather-free than the male's. And the female incubates the eggs more often than the male does. One study showed that the female was responsible for 72% of the incubation. (How much was the male responsible for?) Eagles sit on their eggs most of the time--one study showed that the eggs were incubated 98% of the time! But when the temperature is warm and there is little wind, the parents incubate less often. Sometimes when the parents leave the eggs, they cover them with feathers and nesting materials. Scientists don't know for sure whether they do this to keep the eggs warm or to hide the eggs so predators don't steal them. Eagles have VERY sharp claws on their powerful talons. When the incubating parent is moving about the nest, it often clenches its talons so the sharp claws can't hurt the eggs or babies by accident. The parents are also very careful to step around the eggs to avoid crushing them. Parents probably turn the eggs at least once a day, but scientists aren't sure how often this happens or which parent does it.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Question-for-the-Experts-td4252590.html","images":0},{"id":"4257680","topic":"4252590","order":4,"title":"Re: Question for the Experts","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-01-05T16:55:58.680000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"On a related subject, Barbara Walker forwarded this item. Great Horned Owls also nest very early in the season. Growing up in New Jersey, I observed one sitting on eggs in a nest atop the broken-off trunk of a tree. It was February and it had been snowing. The owl was itself covered with snow while it sat close to the eggs. Like eagles, Great Horned Owls have quite a prolonged nesting and breeding season. Their young require tending into late summer-- for about 5 months after leaving the nest (which is even longer than our local eaglets appeared to be dependent upon their parents for food). For the owl, the early nesting appears to be an adaptation to the timing of the reproductive cycle of its principal prey species-- mostly rabbits. Young rabbits are produced early in the spring, just when the young owls are growing most rapidly and need the extra nutrition. On that subject, we should be keeping a watch out for Great Horned Owls on their nests. These shots were taken in the afternoon, between 4 and 5 PM, after i joined Barry Heimlich and Doug Young at the nest site. When I arrived the female was brooding and appeared to be feeding the young. After an interval of about 20 minutes, the male (on the right) flew into the nest from behind. The female, on the left, is more bulky and her head and bill appear larger. To my eye, she seems to have a slightly thicker brow than the male, while the base of the male's bill is almost in a direct line with its sloping forehead. The pair exchanged greetings, and the the female flew off to roost in the dead melaleuca west of the nest. The first 15 minutes or so, I did not see any eaglets. Then, I saw the top of a head and a few minutes later I saw another head. Shortly after that, both eaglets started moving around and I could see both heads clearly. The male just stood there doing nothing until 4:55 when he began ripping at food already in the nest to feed the two chicks. He fed them nonstop (and equally) until 5:10 when he flew to a nearby horizontal branch on an Australian Pine. During that 15 minute feeding period, I searched for any sign of movement on any other part of the nest. Nothing. The male stayed on the branch for less than 5 minutes and then flew back to the nest. One chick was on the far right side of the nest and the larger one was on the far left side. A couple of minutes after the male returned to the nest another little head popped up in the middle! The male then fed little eaglet #3 constantly for at least 10 minutes. The larger chick on the far left must have had her fill because she just watched and did not try to get any. The one on the right was moderately interested and reached up a few times to grab a bite, but #3 got a lot! The male had to go to some effort by stretching to reach #3 because the little one did not appear to stand up or try to move closer to the adult. Hopefully, after tonight's big meal the little one will get stronger and move around a bit more. As I drove away, I noticed that the female was on top of a dead melaleuca tree.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-FEB-14-4-15-PM-until-5-55-td4572437.html","images":0},{"id":"4572632","topic":"4572437","order":2,"title":"Re: Sunday FEB 14 - 4:15 PM until 5:55","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-02-14T21:46:04.348000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"That's good news, Jill, as we were only certain about seeing two chicks earlier this afternoon.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-FEB-14-4-15-PM-until-5-55-td4572437.html","images":0},{"id":"4574813","topic":"4572437","order":3,"title":"Re: Sunday FEB 14 - 4:15 PM until 5:55","author":"vdelauz","date":"2010-02-15T09:42:32.058000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"My fingers are crossed for #3! I copied Lynda White for her information. If the eagle was flying up high, it is possible that the bottom of the white head was in shadow and appeared dark, but the light shone through to illuminate the white tail feathers, in which case it could have been an adult in normal plumage, but you would be in the best position to judge that assumption. Those nesting to the north (especially juveniles) sometimes travel as far as Chesapeake Bay and even into New England and Canada.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/I-saw-one-of-the-adults-today-td5237028.html","images":0},{"id":"5241701","topic":"5237028","order":3,"title":"Re: I saw one of the adults today","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2010-06-30T22:26:01.352000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Thanks for the info. The female was posted in the tree to the east and the male was in the melaleucas. Soon after we arrived, the male attacked a Turkey Vulture that was circling quite close to the nest. There was no physical contact that we could see, but both adults were calling. (Turkey Vultures have a keen sense of smell and undoubtedly detect the odor of decomposing prey in the nest. As the day warms up they often circle the nest, especially on windless days such as today). Following the sortee with the vulture, the female took a roost on the horizontal perch above the nest, and the male eventually flew off and circled up high to the northeast. The chicks were quiet during the action, perhaps knowing that the adults were giving alarm calls. They became restless around 11:15 or so, and both popped up their heads, providing great views for the spectators and some photo ops. We hoped to see a feeding, but it never occurred before we had to depart. Judging from their size the two eaglets that are now visible in the nest are about three weeks old. Incubation of the first egg probably commenced on December 4, 2010, when the female suddenly settled deep in the nest and could not be seen over the rim for about a week. Since the first egg takes an average of 35 days to hatch, it is likely that this chick emerged on or about January 8th. I made a poor video of the larger eaglet, my first-ever attempt, with help from onlookers who told me when the eaglet's head popped up, as I had trouble seeing the LCD monitor in the bright sunlight (view full screen to see the little guy better, and PLEASE DON'T turn the sound up!): Male on guard: Female roosting to east: Two eaglets: They came into physical contact and there was some wing flapping, but nothing violent: This appears to be the older, larger eaglet. As (s)he ages, the white fuzz will diminish until there is only a top hat effect:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-January-30-both-chicks-active-td5975512.html","images":5},{"id":"5975596","topic":"5975512","order":2,"title":"Re: Sunday, January 30 - both chicks active","author":"Trisha","date":"2011-01-30T17:19:46.758000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"Wonderful images and the video is really great! The eaglet was seen perched in a small shrub near the fence and it flew in towards the nest tree out of sight. Photos of it flying showed no signs of injury, but some people were concerned that it may have have possibly been injured in some manner, so the police were summoned and they called the wildlife ambulance. Several people were authorized to enter the area and found the eagle roosting 10 feet off the ground and flying freely. The eaglet's behavior was normal. Although their first flight can be risky, if uninjured they may not be able to fly directly to the nest but can work their way up by \"laddering\" from one branch to another. It may take them a couple of days to get back to the nest, but they are driven by hunger to return. The parents will lure the eaglet back to the nest with food. Unless there is evidence of injury there is no need to panic when an eaglet disappears upon fledging. Aside from visible signs of injury, other evidence may be distress calls from a fixed location. As is the case with any newly fledged bird of any species that is found near the nest, it should not be disturbed. Although folks may think the bird \"fell out of the nest,\" it likely flew voluntarily but lacks sufficient skills to fly efficiently. As has been the case with the eagles, the fledgling will be under the watchful eye of the parents.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Wild-life-Ambulance-td7573468.html","images":0},{"id":"7573470","topic":"7573468","order":3,"title":"Re: Wild life Ambulance?","author":"Liza","date":"2014-04-05T12:06:27.505000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Thanks for the update , I was there yesterday between 4:45 and 6 pm did not see any presence of the eaglets but did see Pride and Joy roosting over at the melaleuca trees . Adult dropped some kind of prey in the nest for the single baby in the nest, but it wasn't interested. After about 5 mins a fledgling flew from the nest area, towards the power lines and back to the trees about 50 feet to the west of the nest and out of sight. There was brief \"crashing\" sounds, but they didn't seem to indicate falling. The nest appeared empty, but within 5 minutes there was another baby in the nest. I could have been mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that the nest was empty for at least a brief period- I did not have binoculars, so could have missed one if it was sitting in the back. At some point the second adult appeared and all seemed relaxed. There were a few bouts of babies vocalizing, at times there were clearly 2 babies vocalizing at the same time- the one in the nest and the other off to the east and out of sight. Both parents were hanging out and did not seem agitated at all.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Wild-life-Ambulance-td7573468.html","images":0},{"id":"7573474","topic":"7573468","order":6,"title":"Re: Wild life Ambulance?","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-04-05T19:19:34.317000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Thanks for the updates. Keep an eye on the eaglets as much as possible, but don't get too anxious when they are out of sight for a day or two. During the next month they will gain hunting skills by following their parents to foraging areas, and if our observations over the past 8 years have served as a guide, they will soon take up roosting and sleeping off the nest in areas within their parents' territory. Around June they will migrate north where the water is cooler and the fish are nearer the surface and easier to catch. This is the nature of wild creatures, even if they are raised in the disturbed suburban habitat.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Wild-life-Ambulance-td7573468.html","images":0},{"id":"2657821","topic":"2657821","order":1,"title":"nest from 5-7PM on Sat 4/18/09","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2009-04-18T21:59:06.347000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"When I arrived I saw 1 adult, and [specific street address withheld] back in the dead trees.
