One adult was sitting high on the nest when I arrived, often standing on the rim, looking down in and putting its whole head down into the nest as it stood. The second adult arrived from the back at 10am and began the same behavior along with the other adult. In a few minutes the original nest sitter flew off and the other then took the same high, but laying down, position on the nest. This new adult did not bring any food. I was surprised to see the departing eagle land on top of a concrete FPL power pole to the left of the nest. I walked down and even though watching me closely, it let me get as close as I wanted. It preened for the entire duration. Unfortunately the angle was directly into the sun....so photography wasn't optimal. I stood there with it for awhile until a truck came along and stopped and the occupants started yelling at me.....so much for a flight shot as off it flew just as I turned around to ask them to stop yelling. This adult then circled rather high behind the nest for a long time. I walked back to the nest and found 2 new eagle watchers....Kit and Mike, who asked if I could show them the nest or an eagle. It was wonderful to again see and hear the excitement and joy as a new watcher first sees one of the eagles on the nest. We all decided we needed longer lenses. I watched for another 30 minutes, observing the same activity from the new adult on the nest as the previous. A couple times after it put its head way down into the nest it would come up and rapidly shake its head....appearing as though it had something tiny in its beak that it was throwing out of the nest. (Shell pieces......or do they eat them?) Ken, I took lots of pictures if you need any for documentation....let me know as I doubt if I will have any better luck than before getting them on the site.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-activity-1-Jan-2013-9-15-11-30am-td7572878.html","images":0},{"id":"7574462","topic":"7574462","order":1,"title":"Eagles seen in Cooper City March-April 2016","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2016-04-11T09:36:34.376000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"A resident has reported Bald Eagles occasionally roosting in western Cooper City, in the area SE of the intersection of Griffin Rd and South Flamingo Avenue, about a half mile southeast of Griffin Elementary School. There were two adults, one larger than the other, presumably the female of a pair. FWC was summoned to check for the presence of a nest but none was found in the vicinity. They have been seen roosting late in the day and also flying out in a northwesterly direction. If you live in that area you might keep an eye out. Even if they do not have a nest they may be scouting out a location for one to use next breeding season. Here are excerpts of two posts to the FORUM from late in 2015, reasonably close to this location. A bald eagle was seen and photographed flying around Wolf Lake, Davie. It was around September 2015, in the beginning of breeding season. Note the bill of the more reclusive (presumably Courage, the youngest) chick to the right, behind the dominant one (which may be the second-hatched, Chance). The latter was installed for the safety of students who formerly walked to the bus stop along the shoulder of the road. If people congregate or loiter in front of the nest this adds to the \"existing\" disturbance and certainly should be discouraged. Also, the May 15 date for the conclusion of the breeding season becomes irrelevant in the event of a second brood. If successful, the eaglets could be present for an additional month or two. Most important is that nest watchers abide by the spirit of the regulations rather than force others to remain 330 feet away, which would prohibit them from viewing even on the opposite side of the highway-- as far away as the corner of Pines & 209th Avenue, out of sight of the nest. The last thing any of us want is for the police department or the City to be besieged with complaints, as the easy solution for them would be to simply prohibit any watchers to view the nest, or make them park in the Post Office parking lot two blocks away","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/The-new-member-of-the-family-td7574440.html","images":0},{"id":"7574206","topic":"7574206","order":1,"title":"Need more information about nest in Palm Springs North","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-11-07T16:09:47.516000-05:00","nest":"North Miami / Miami-Dade historical records","season":"","text":"More information about the nest in the Village of Palm Springs North-- A ground observer has seen the pair of eagles out flying near the nest every day, mostly in the mornings Construction has not begun on the proposed Wal-Mart. I'm still going through mine as I wound up staying until 10:30. I watched the adult that was so close, right in front of us, on top of the bare trunk, hunker down for a really hard rain. It made itself almost a ball...with its head tucked (I think) under its wing. When the rain stopped, I emerged from the car and the eagle from its \"ball\". It shook all over and started to pull and pick at its feathers. It looked like a drowned rat but didn't seem at all bothered by the hard rain or the condition of its dripping feathers. At about 9:50 Hope arrived just like Justin had previously and flew by the adult, calling loudly, heading towards the nest. I heard Justin's loud greeting so I'm sure that where it headed. The VERY loud calling continued from the nest area and about 10:10 they both flew from the nest area and began flying in the vicinity of the adult still engaged in the \"full service preen.\" It really was humorous, the siblings circling and flying right by the parent calling in a very loud, demonstrative manner. The adult just continued to preen, occasionally looking up to watch its offspring.....but not budging. I think the siblings were yelling \"we're hungry\" and the parent stayed busy and quiet. I think many of us can identify with ignoring noisy children! Hope and Justice finally flew off and circled for a while to the north and then returned with more loud calling, flying near, but not getting too close to the adult. The adult continued to preen. Hope and Justice returned to the nest, where they were when I left. The Osprey appears to have been electrocuted or fatally wounded/burned from the incident. The pole was on fire when I got there so I called Progress Energy. They sent out a truck right away. Since the start of a voluntary nonlead-bullet program in the state last fall, lead-bullet use among Wyoming hunters has dropped by 24 percent, corresponding nicely with a 28-percent decrease in the amount of lead found in the bloodstreams of ravens, which scavenge hunter-shot carcasses. But eagles, which also scavenge but are extra-sensitive to lead, apparently received no benefit from the small decrease in lead-bullet use. That means eagles need an environment totally free from lead contamination. Said a spokesperson on the study, \"It's kind of a no-brainer.\" Severely endangered California condors are also extra-sensitive to lead poisoning from lead bullets -- in fact, it's the leading cause of condor death. So after a petition and lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity and allies, California mandated the use of nonlead ammunition throughout the bird's state range. The Center is now pushing hard for nonlead requirements across the country for the sake of condors, eagles, and all other species (including humans). Learning to find food next challenge for young red-tailed hawk that has thrived among eaglets By Megan Thomas, CBC News Posted: Jul 26, 2017 10:46 AM PT http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/hawk-survives-with-eagles-1.4221651 A young red-tailed hawk that has been raised by a pair of bald eagles in a Sidney, B.C., nest continues to defy the odds. The young hawk ended up in the bald eagle's nest in Roberts Bay in early June — likely intended as the next meal for their eaglets. Instead, he survived and became part of the eagle family. \"This guy thinks he is a bald eagle and I think that is what helped him survive,\" said David Bird, an emeritus professor of wildlife biology at McGill University who now lives in Sidney. The hawk likely started begging for food after he arrived in the nest, and the eagle parents started to treat him like the other eaglets, Bird said. \"The last time I laid eyes on him just a few days ago, he's in excellent health,\" he said. The young hawk some have nicknamed Spunky has captured the imagination of bird-watchers in Sidney since he was first spotted living with the eagles. But most wildlife experts did not think he would make it in a nest full of his natural predators. \"Initially I thought he can't survive in this nest. One of his siblings would just simply put a foot on him and that would be the end of him,\" said David Hancock, a wildlife biologist who specializes in bald eagles. \"But he kept eating and growing and pretty soon he grew full size. So he's a mini little eaglet.\" The young hawk has to learn to fly and has been spotted splashing around in bird baths in Sidney. But Bird says his next big challenge is to figure out how to gather his own food, like a hawk rather than an eagle. Hawks tend to rely on hunting species such as voles and meadow mice, while eagles often hunt for fish. \"If he does get so weak because he is not finding food ... then I think it is a no brainer to catch him and take him to a wildlife rehab facility,\" he said. There's also concern that the young hawk will not be sufficiently wary of other eagles, given his unusual upbringing, Hancock said. But for now, Spunky is holding his own. A plan is also being hatched to turn his story into a documentary film, Bird said. We would really appreciate any of the public that could assist us in collecting our data. The students will be analyzing the data soon, but we don't have a lot of data from this most interesting part of the breeding cycle. When the nesting season is over, we plan on sending our data to the Audubon's Eagle Watch program, where it will become a permanent record of the happenings at our Pembroke Pines nest. You never know when this data will offer important information helpful in understanding the complicated interactions between these eagles and their environment. Wouldn't you like to be a part of this important venture? We encourage all of the public to become fellow \"scientists\" and help us with our study. How often does an opportunity like this present itself? The checklists are easy to access - just download a few copies to have in your car for when you are able to stop by the nest. Then you can either drop them off to the school, or input them on this website when you get to a computer and email them to me. Stopped by to check on the welfare of the eaglets. One of them had fledged five days ago on May 21. I found one on the nest which appeared to be the male based on the plumage of the head and dark chin area along with the gape and good looks at feet which showed that hallux was not longer than third toe. He was roosting on the nest support branch and actually flew back-and-forth between the nest and the branch --rather, hopped and flapped. After a little while, the eaglet in the nest called and another answered. At first the second eaglet sounded as if farther away and slightly to the left (east) of the nest. Then it moved much closer to my position along the roadway, to the east and close to the edge of the woodland. I could not see her. I have recordings of both calls. The fact that the second Eaglet is moving is hopefully a good sign that she is able to fly and probably will return to the nest for feeding. Did not see any adults. Eaglet alone on nest: Eaglet flapping, exercising wings: Note that the hind toe (hallux) and toenail are not longer than the third (middle front) toe. The female has a longer hallux. The heavy rains had flooded the sidewalk and an extensive area in front of the nest. It was very difficult to get a clear view of the nest. This gentleman was riding his bike through the foot-deep water: Phil Martin visited later in the morning, heard the second eaglet calling quite close by but again did not see her. Phil got a better photo of the eaglet flapping his wings. He said the eaglet \"was really jumping around the nest. I believe when he heard her calling he got off the perch and became very active.\"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/May-26-One-eaglet-on-nest-and-fledgling-calling-unseen-td7575561.html","images":6},{"id":"7574309","topic":"7574309","order":1,"title":"is anyone monitoring the Quiet Waters nest?","author":"Speechykeane","date":"2016-01-17T20:16:02.766000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"I have not seen any updates and was wondering if the eagles are incubating any eggs... One adult was roosting at the very top of an Australian Pine to the east of the nest near the corner of 208th, about 150 feet back from Pines Boulevard. This is possibly the older chick (PP7), since it showed conspicuous white markings on its breast, though we really could not make a comparison with its sibling: This may be the male, as its bill seems a bit narrower and the forehead seems more sloping than that of the female (but it is just an impression):","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/April-11-2011-Both-eaglets-on-the-nest-td6261921.html","images":2},{"id":"2586653","topic":"2586653","order":1,"title":"departed nest at 4:45","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-04-04T18:29:09.348000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Nothing new to report on the whereabouts of the larger chick. There were no adults in sight and no eaglets were visible in the nest. In a few minutes an adult Bald Eagle flew in from the west and tried to roost on the very slender top branches of the nest tree. At first it was unable to find a secure perch on the left side of the tree, but after a great deal of flapping and balancing it settled on the right topmost branch, which bent down under its weight. Based upon slimmer proportions and low forehead, I believe it was the male. After only a minute or two he flew off low and to the southeast. Dave from Davie had arrived and we watched the nest for signs of an eaglet. About an hour into our watch, I had turned off my camera and was just folding up my monopod and was ready to depart when an adult eagle flew in from the NW, this time with a prey item that may have been a small fish (or is that the foot of a coot or grebe hanging down?). I could not be sure of the sex of this bird. It fed the young and we hoped to see one or more eaglets, but the nest rim seems to be quite wide and the cup must be on the far side of the nest. I arrived at 5:03pm and parked at the paved area between the maleleucas and the traffic signal. There were no eagles roosting on the maleleucas, so I walked towards the nest area. Upon arriving at the nest area, I observed the female standing on the edge of the nest looking down into the nest. From the bobbing up and down of her head, I realized that she was feeding her young, however many she may have in the nest. I could not verify what she was feeding them, but it either wasn't that much or I arrived at the end of the feeding because a minute later she settled back into the nest. Oddly enough, she sat low in the nest, to the point where no brown was showing and very little of her white head was showing. Could it be that she's sitting higher on her young eaglet, but they have built up the edges of the nest to the point where she actually looks like she's sitting lower? I'm not certain, but I have read posts where observers have seen the eagles carrying sticks back to the nest, so it's definitely something to consider. Personally, it is my opinion that the view to the nest this year is not as \"open\" as it was last year, which leads me to believe that they have added a lot of material to it. Either way, almost as soon as she settled into the nest, the male flew in from the east, looped high in the sky over the nest area and disappeared to the south. She stayed in the nest and barely moved for the next 24 minutes, with the exception of one directional adjustment. At 5:28, the male showed up again. He flew in from the east, but this time, he swooped down very quickly towards the Australian Pine tree where the nest is, chirped at the female very loudly, then proceeded to do something I didn't expect. He flew right at the tree to the west of the nest, turned sideways and, in full flight, grabbed a tall, bare branch and snapped it clean off of the tree. Although I believe its intent was to fly away with it, the branch broke too low and, due to what looked to be a combination of too much weight and too long of a length, it fell out of the male's grasp. As the branch fell, it made lots of loud noise as it bounced off of the lower branches and fell to the ground. The two folks that were observing next to me were as amazed as I was at what we had just witnessed. Immediately after his failed attempt to carry the branch, he flew back towards the nest from the west and landed on the edge of the nest. The male and female exchanged loud chirps and the female immediately left the nest and flew westbound towards the maleleucas. The male then proceeded to do the same thing that the female was doing when I first arrived there. He was bobbing his head up and down into the nest as if he was feeding his young. What was he feeding and when did he get it? I did not see him carrying anything in his beak or his claws as he flew in, so I am assuming that the food item was either very small or maybe it was food that was being regurgitated? I don't know the answer, so this is pure speculation on my behalf. After finishing his short feeding time, he quickly settled low into the nest and remained motionless. Since daylight was fading away, I decided to walk back to my truck and leave, but I first wanted to see if the female had stopped at the maleleucas. Fortunately, she had, so I watched her roosting atop the maleleuca while preening herself for 14 minutes. Once finished, she flew east towards the nest, but I did not confirm whether she actually went to the nest at that point because I got back into my truck and left. Questions that I have after this observation: Is the nest's edge higher, making the overall depth of the nest deeper? What is the significance of the male eagle's high speed fly-by of the nest, loud chirp over the nest, followed by the high speed takedown of that large branch? Do eagles only carry their prey in their beaks or their claws or is it possible that they sometimes eat their prey elsewhere and regurgitate small, manageable pieces for their newborn young? Here are a few pics of today's observation... The evening light seemed just right. To my knowledge, eagles are not known to regurgitate food for the young. They sometimes \"butcher\" prey on a tree in their territory, and bring in small scraps when the chicks are very small. They also cache prey in the nest, and may just tear off bits to feed the eaglets. We have seen the eagles break off branches as you observed-- they speed up to create more force. I guess the bird just got more lumber than he bargained for! We thought the nest rim was higher than last season, especially on the left side. Alternatively, the cup may be placed farther back and to the left, reducing visibility when the bird assumes certain positions, or a combination of these factors. The second egg, if there is one, should be hatching, as it is usually 3-5 days behind the first. There could be a third as well. The bird must incubate as well as brood the chick(s), so it will settle down and try to do both. Our impression of the brooding bird sitting higher up does not hold true 100% of the time. It probably depends partially upon the position of the chick under the adult. They are very careful not to injure the eaglets or damage the eggs, keeping their talons closed into a \"fist\" while walking on the nest. Thanks again, and especially, thank you for all your work with the students' observation form.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/January-26-2010-5-03pm-to-5-46-td4465131.html","images":0}]
