They sometimes will lay another clutch of eggs if they lose the nest very early in the breeding season. It takes about 5 months from when the eggs are laid until the eaglets are fully independent. Conditions in south Florida would not be favorable for such a second brood. The local population instinctively times the season so that prey is most abundant when the eaglets are growing rapidly-- the water is still cool enough so that fish are not hiding deeply, and other prey such as waterfowl, wading birds and small mammals are producing young. Heat stress is less a problem for the eaglets in late winter and early spring. Normally the juveniles fly off and migrate to the north by mid-summer to find better foraging conditions, and the normal time for the adults to start a new breeding cycle is mid-to-late September. With living organisms one cannot ever say \"never,\" but \"highly unlikely\" seems to be an appropriate answer to your question.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Can-someone-tell-me-td7574418.html","images":0},{"id":"7574421","topic":"7574418","order":3,"title":"Re: Can someone tell me...","author":"Speechykeane","date":"2016-03-14T14:33:57.097000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Thank you for the information!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Can-someone-tell-me-td7574418.html","images":0},{"id":"7574422","topic":"7574418","order":4,"title":"Re: Can someone tell me...","author":"rcpetit","date":"2016-03-14T19:11:20-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"From: \"Speechykeane [via Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida]\" < [hidden email] > To: \"rcpetit\" < [hidden email] > Sent: Monday, March 14, 2016 1:33:57 PM Subject: Re: Can someone tell me... Mary Lou and I got there at around 9:30 and watched the nest for about an hour. Al, Phil and also Tom the fireman were there. We saw two prey drops and quite a bit of flying around. There were several instances of the adults feeding the eaglet(s) so we took many photos in hopes of maybe seeing one's head. I had over 200 but none showed the eaglet. Here is a nice view of female Joy (left) and her mate, Pride The female tearing small strips prey to feed the hatchling(s). They seemed to be delivering food to two separate spots, raising hope there are at least two eaglets. Liftoff from the perch near the top of the tall pine just to the west of the nest tree. Up, up and away! Liza M wrote on Facebook that there were at least two large groups that congregated along the shoulder and even in the traffic lane on the south side of the street in front of the nest. They also gathered at the fence along the sidewalk in front of the nest. She said police cars drove by and did not seem to notice the infractions. This was reported to the City. The heavy winds had knocked over the signs along the road, and a few cones were down, maybe done by joy riders. I notified the City and they will improve the signage. They will also finally replace the permanent \"No Parking\" sign that had been knocked down by a vehicle some months back. In the meantime, if you see that any of the signs are down, please replace them. Three \"sandwich\" signs and one cone are knocked over in this photo of the area to the west.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-17-9-30-10-30-AM-td7573339.html","images":6},{"id":"7573340","topic":"7573339","order":2,"title":"Re: JAN 17 9:30 - 10:30 AM","author":"lovlycruzr","date":"2014-01-18T10:15:47.113000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Beautiful photos! We found the female sitting quietly on the nest when we arrived shortly after 9:15 AM this morning. Phil had gotten there a few minutes before us. The male was not in sight. Turkey Vultures were circling around the nest, probably attracted by the smell of decaying prey. Suddenly, the male appeared overhead, as if out of nowhere. He attacked one of the vultures, which veered defensively away. They did not appear to make contact, but they came very close and the vulture flew away very quickly. The male circled a few times, then disappeared to the west. Both Phil and I missed capturing the dramatic encounter-- I could not focus on the sparring birds-- later I realized that the lens was set on macro because I had photographed a butterfly the last time I used it. We thought he was gone, but he somehow found his way unto the nest only afbout four minutes later! He rested on the left side of the nest while the female tore at a prey item that looked like a white bird. The male flew up to roost in the pine to the east of the nest. One eaglet, which I am quite certain was the male (based upon relative lack of white markings on chin and neck/upper breast as well as less extension of the gape under its eye) was barely visible, roosting over to the left (east) of the nest: He was calling incessantly. I hoped to hear his sibling answer but never did. He flew in between the branches and moved about quite a bit before twice launching into brief flights-- once in a circle over Pines Boulevard and then south at 208th Ave. H was flying so low that I could not fit him into my lens: I never saw either adult nor the other eaglet. When I departed he was perched on the nest: I received an interesting question from Susan-- Ken: I feel a bit concerned that it seems to be taking the Male eaglet so long to Fly the coop, so to speak... Is this a real concern or is that just more common with male birds? Thank you Susan Good question, Susan! Unlike most other bird species, the young eagles return to the nest after they learn to fly. The parents attract them back by depositing prey in the nest. This is a more effective way of protecting and feeding them as they gain hunting skills, especially if there is more than one youngster. They may continue returning to the nest for 4-6 weeks or even longer (Average at this nest was 43 days). Check out the summaries and spreadsheet links at top of on the FORUM pages-- click this link and then scroll up the page: http://www.rosyfinch.com/BaldEagleNest.html#SUMMARY Hopefully the female eaglet is OK and we will keep looking for her to return to the nest. They will accompany their parents as they learn to catch prey on their own.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/June-13-Found-only-one-eaglet-flying-td7575574.html","images":5},{"id":"6227046","topic":"6227046","order":1,"title":"Rant about failure of FPL and/or Comcast/NBC6 to support a nest camera in Pembroke Pines","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-03-31T09:53:19.085000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"See my post at this link: http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/Rant-about-failure-of-FPL-and-or-Comcast-NBC6-to-support-a-nest-camera-in-Pembroke-Pines-td6227044.html","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Rant-about-failure-of-FPL-and-or-Comcast-NBC6-to-support-a-nest-camera-in-Pembroke-Pines-td6227046.html","images":0},{"id":"7572779","topic":"7572779","order":1,"title":"Eagle Sighting Today!!!!","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2012-08-22T21:20:00.165000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I was driving home today north on I-95 around 6:45 pm and as I approached Ives Dairy Road a juvenile bald eagle was flying high above the middle of I-95 right next to me!! Last week he/she was joined by another. We see them just about every evening feeding in the same tree. We don't see any nests nearby. The couple of times we caught them flying in or out of the area they've flown to or from the NW. I've been trying to take photos of them with my zoom lens, but every time I have it with me, it's raining and they don't show. I'm curious to find out if they're using one of the nearby known nests (pines or medley) or if this is a new nesting pair. This is the first time ever that we have seen bald eagles in miami lakes. The trees aren't far from the road, so you get a really good look at them when they're there. One is a fairly tall pine tree but not an Australian pine. The eagle pair located here was around for a long time acting as you describe before their nest was spotted in the tallest tree in the \"nest woods\", as we call it. It's getting near time for the pairs to return to their nest areas to rebuild existing nests, or perhaps with yours, start a new nest. Look for them to be carrying sticks or straw (like from a field) and that may lead you to a nest. It is exciting that you see 2....do they both have the completely white heads that would tell they are around 5 yrs old and of breeding age? Our eagles seemed completely comfortable in this urban setting also. They would often perch in trees located the closest to the watchers. These trees always had the most open views as they were on the edge of the nest woods, but closest to the highway, where cars zoomed by. Experts in the field have told us that if they have a nest they do not like intruders coming close to it. They will even abandon their young on the nest if threatened by people coming too close. The article has photos of the bird. http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2014-01-02/story/rare-snowy-owl-snowbirds-graces-little-talbot-island Rare snowy owl snowbirds graces Little Talbot Island Florida is known for its “snowbirds,” people who migrate here for the warm weather during winter months. But another snowbird of the authentic nature has been sighted on Duval County’s Little Talbot Island, far from its usual Arctic haunts. The snowy owl (bubo scandiacus) has been seen on the island’s eastern beach since Friday. This is only the third sighting ever in Florida, according to state officials. So this “very impressive” bird with big talons is drawing lots of people, Little Talbot park services specialist Peter Maholland said. “Typically its range is Canada and the Arctic, and this is a rare sighting,” he said. “One of our local birders saw it and word got out, and people from all over the region and different states are coming out to see this.” Duval Audubon Society member Caroline Wyatt has been out to see this immature female owl. An avid birder for three decades, she had seen only two others — 1997 in Alaska and a year ago on St. Simons Island, Ga. “I never dreamed one would get into Florida, which is really, really rare,” said Wyatt, who lives in Fernandina Beach. “It is very striking and has what I call a bowling ball head. … I couldn’t believe it was in the sand dunes at the island.” The big (up to a 5-foot wingspan) bird is the largest North American owl, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It spends summers north of the Arctic Circle, hunting lemmings and ptarmigan, then usually migrates south into Canada and northern states in winter. The adult male is normally pure white with black wing specks. Females get more black wing striping. In Florida, a snowy owl has been documented in December 1999 at St. George Island State Park off Apalachicola and January 2012 around St. Augustine, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman Karen Parker said. Experts say its southern migration may be due to a population explosion in the cold white north and a resulting reduction in their prey. Whatever the reason, when Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge ranger and photographer Cindy McIntyre heard about the owl, she headed to the state park at 12157 Heckscher Drive on Tuesday. “There was a whole row of photographers out there at a respectable distance, which was nice,” McIntyre said. “Once she [the owl] preened and turned around — that lasted only a few seconds. Then she decided it was time to go and flew right at us, then flew to a sandbar behind us. She was big and she was beautiful.” Maholland suggested anyone interested in seeing the bird do so soon because no one knows how long it will stay. Visitors should stay several hundred feet away so the owl isn’t spooked and stressed out. Four observers had been there before me. Luis had been watching since 7:30 AM, and Phil was just departing. They briefed me on events. The female (Jewel) was initially roosting in the tall Australian Pine east of the nest at the SW corner of Pines Blvd & SW 208th Avenue. The male (Pride) was deep in the nest. Jewel then flew to the nest and they exchanged duties. Pride then took up the same roost. When I arrived, I found Jewel to be barely visible deep in the nest and Pride was still roosting in the tall pine. He remained there for nearly an hour: Pride disgorged a pellet They consist of indigestible prey remains such as feathers, fur, teeth, and claws. Eagles have strong acid in their stomachs, so they dissolve and digest bones, unlike owls which lack acid and cast off bones as well. Some of the photographers were able to capture a view of the pellet, but I had just missed it here: Just before I departed, Pride flew to the nest and then Jewel flew out to the northwest. Pride looked back towards the nest, then stretched and defecated before flying off: Within about one minute Jewel returned with a clump of grass in her talons, surely intended as soft lining for the nest. We all have little doubt that the first egg has been deposited, probably within the last 24 hours: My last photo shows Jewel roosting just to the right of the nest structure. Two different people said they saw an eagle bringing a snake back to the nest. They also believe they hear chirping from the nest which subsides when an adult brings food. When I arrived there were two eagles on the nest. I could not see any eaglets. The nest is quite large and is substantially higher in the air than the Pembroke nest (probably 15-20 feet higher.) The tree is in a cow pasture and is close to the edge of the property on both the south edge and especially the east edge. Along the east, NW 87 Ave. is in the process of being widened. The nest tree is only 15-20 feet away from the edge of the new sidewalk, but is in a fenced area. At least one of the eagles is young - not unlike \"Newfie\". I was very worried at first that it was one of the young Eaglets from the Pembroke hatching. I wrote Ken Schneider to hear that it is a Osprey. He ask that I post this for informational purposes to all concerned. The culprit in the death was a telephone pole it had been electrocuted, it laid 7 inches from the base. Then again I hope that was the reason for it's death? Thanks for the forum. Electricity is funny - it works on differences. Landing or touching one wire does nothing. Birds (and other animals/humans) die when they touch 'two' wires. Most overhead wires you see are 3 wires which are 3 legs of 3-phase voltages. One normally has to touch two of these wires - or in the case of humans, they touch one wire and are touching the ground (a-la-touching wires with a tree trimmer or pool skimmer) to get electrocuted. Usually birds get electrocuted on pole-mounted transformers where they walk around on top of them and the three connections are very close to one another allowing the birds to be able to touch two legs at the same time. I thought that it was a baby eaglet and wanted to let it be known to all of us that had witness the birth of the Eagles on Pines this year. I sent your photos to our point person with FPL. He has made improvements to the wires and poles on the lines around the Pines nest. As Mike stated, the birds tend to land on top of the poles......so the top wires going out from the poles have been insulated with \"wraps\". Other improvements include the \"curly cues\" placed on the wires to make them more visible. I'm sure no one took your post as a criticism against FPL or any group. Perhaps that pole can be checked to see if any other protective measures could be taken. It would be so positive if something new could be learned from this tragic occurrence.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Electrocuted-Bird-of-Prey-td3808976.html","images":0},{"id":"3840392","topic":"3808976","order":6,"title":"Re: Electrocuted Bird of Prey","author":"Kelly Smith","date":"2009-10-17T07:05:35.667000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"This seems like a good opportunity to thank FPL for the care and concern that they have exhibited towards our Pines Eagles. FWC Law Enforcement can give you numbers for local rehabbers which can determine why the osprey died. They thoroughly check the carcass for emaciation and other signs of trauma. Many, many osprey are hit by cars. FWC and local power companies should be notified if it is suspected that a bird of prey has been electrocuted. Also, there is a mortality database http://www.myfwc.com/bird/ . Please note that FWC is interesetd in monitoring electrocutions. Please look at the link provided below regarding the 10.5 million an electric company had to pay for not making the lines safe for Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles and hawks. http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/jul2009/2009-07-14-092.asp From the FWC Site Surveillance for Wild Bird Die-offs The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is cooperatively working with the Florida Department of Health on a wild bird mortality database. This project was initiated to support surveillance for bird die-offs and aids in monitoring for Avian Influenza (AI) and West Nile Virus (WNV). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has additional information concerning WNV. Please see our web page for links and information concerning AI. We are also interested in monitoring bird electrocutions from power lines (pdf) and poles so that faulty facilities may be repaired. Please be sure to indicate electrocution as the cause of death when that is the case. Please help us monitor wild bird populations in Florida. Click here for help in identifying birds. A few months ago while birding in the Everglades we came upon a Crested Caracara along the roadside. We assumed it had been killed by a car and I called FWC to report the find. I was told by several different officers that no one was keeping data on the deaths of these birds and there was nothing that they, or I, could do. I am glad to hear that there is an interested group and will keep their number in my phone.
