In one instance Tom Mitchell captured this shot of a \"stranger\" actually visiting the nest tree. We could tell by its plumage that this bird was older-- it had more white feathers showing on its head and tail, and its eyes were beginning to turn yellow. It was probably entering its third year. Might it have been last year's chick (\"P. Piney One\"), who fledged in late March or early April of 2008? With Tom's permission, here is a cropped image of that bird, which he photographed on May 11th: Only yesterday, Mary Lou and I were thrilled to see our second Bald Eagle at Nelson Lake since arriving in Illinois on June 3. The first we saw was an adult, but this one was an immature, probably entering its second year. It is undergoing a molt, very likely changing from its first (juvenal -- not \"juvenile\") plumage, which is largely very dark (dark body and flight feathers but with mottled white underwing linings), into its first stage of definitive plumage, where white shows up in the flight and tail feathers. Note that the juvenal flight and tail feathers are an inch or so longer than those of an adult eagle, an adaptation that actually makes the youngster appear larger than an adult, but also provides more lift as it tries its wings for the first time. Of interest is the fact that the feathers are shed in small groups symmetrically, so that the wing always remains balanced, and flight is not impaired. By convention, the primary feathers are numbered from nearest to the body, starting with P1, which is the first long feather after the row of secondaries closest to the body. I can count 12 or 13 primary feathers in this photo. The three new new feathers on each wing appear to be P4, P5, and P6. The new feathers are nicely rounded, while the older and longer ones are more pointed and irregular, signs of wear and tear. This feature is particularly noticeable on the tail feathers. Contrast this with my photo of one of our PP adults in flight, taken Feb 3, 2009-- note the narrower appearance of the wings: Here is a shot of Hope in flight, on April 6, showing off her nice new flight feathers with rounded ends: The nomenclature for the various molts and plumages of birds that take more than a year to attain full adult breeding plumage is in some flux. As you know, the full white head and tail of the Bald Eagle take 4 to 5 years to develop. Eagles start out with natal down, which then is replaced (by a pre-juvenal molt) with juvenal plumage of the fledgling. Then there are annual molts into a series of second, third and fourth or fifth \"basic\" plumages, the final one of which is the adult basic plumage. Then the basic plumage is replaced each year thereafter. If a bird has a flight feather plucked, it will replace it quite quickly during any stage, outside of the molting cycle. Some songbirds such as warbler and tanagers have a spring (pre-nuptial) molt into a bright breeding plumage (called the \"alternate\" plumage, since it is worn only rather briefly) that is replaced in late summer or fall by their basic plumage. Interestingly, unlike the eagles' orderly and gradual replacement of wing feathers, some birds such as many species of ducks and geese may lose all their flight feathers at once and are rendered flightless for a few weeks after breeding. Hi all, Attached is a letter I wrote to Thomas Carnahan, who is the Chairman of the Board of Wind Capital Group, the group that is proposing the windmills in the EAA. As part of the letter, I included a resolution approved by the SFAS Board of Directors. A similar resolution was adopted by the Regional Conservation Committee and was submitted to the Everglades Coalition. I also petitioned the Palm Beach County Commission asking that they reject the zoning change on the grounds thwt the wind farm would. a: interfere with safe passage of birds through the Atlantic Migratory Flyway and, b: that the construction of windmills and their support infrastructure would counter the Everglades Restoration effort in the EAA. I am not going to let this rest and will do everything in my power to either stop the project or to insure that the provisos suggested in the letter to Mr. Carnahan are instituted and followed through. Grant Grant's letter: Thomas S. Carnahan Chairman of the Board, Wind Capital Group [specific street address withheld], Suite 300 Saint Louis, Missouri 63103 Dear Sir: Florida is ideally situated to take advantage of free renewable energy sources such as Solar, Wave, Ocean current and possibly Geothermal, but not wind. There are many places in Florida that, at first glance, may seem good choices for wind farms, but average wind speeds in Florida are insufficient to produce energy on a continual basis. It has been said that less than 1% of annual bird mortality is due to collision with wind turbines. While this may be true presently, this does not consider the anticipated increase in the number of wind farms yet to be constructed, and it certainly does not consider locating a wind farm directly in a busy migratory flyway. According to a September [specific street address withheld] Journal, between 75,000 and 275,000 birds are being killed each year in the U.S. due to fatal bird/wind turbine collisions, and these numbers can only increase as the number of wind farms increases. Florida has the largest population of bald eagles in the contiguous United States, as well as high populations of other raptors, some endangered, such as the Snail Kite and the Crested Caracara. Raptors utilize wind currents and thermal uplifts to ease the burden of flying, and will sometimes follow an air current directly into a turbine propeller with deadly results. In considering placing a wind farm in South Florida, Wind Capital Group evidently has not considered the location’s proximity to the Atlantic Flyway. Almost all of Florida is within the Atlantic Migratory Flyway, and wind farming could place migratory as well as resident birdlife in undue jeopardy. Your study seemingly indicates a low presence of birdlife, but the study is flawed because it was not a multi-year study and does not include annual and seasonal variations in bird activity. The Everglades Regional Conservation Committee (RCC) stands behind the USFWS in calling for three years of pre-construction monitoring, as well as post-construction monitoring and ongoing mortality and risk assessment, conducted by agency biologists and/or those independent of industry. USFWS is concerned about limited data being used to make long-term assumptions on effects. Limited data may not be representative of future years if data is collected during seasons with extremes in weather conditions, or due to changes brought about by global climate change or changes in species distribution. When uncertainty exists as to whether an action has risk of causing negative effects to species or habitats, the burden of proof that the action is not harmful falls on those taking the action, and that burden has not been met. Planning, design, and operation decisions should be made considering such uncertainties and risks, and in a manner that strives to avoid or minimize the risk of adverse effects on resources. In cases of uncertainty regarding risks to wildlife, project planning and development should proceed with appropriate consideration for conservation of the species concerned, and implement measures commensurate to the potential risks to the species. Recent innovations in wind turbine technology have produced computerized bird detection systems that emit a deterrent noise at certain distances when birds as small as a single songbird are detected. Closer approach results in a shutdown of the rotor until the bird is at a safe distance. This topic was discussed at a recent RCC meeting where the stance was developed that the RCC is in favor of all forms of renewable energy, but wind turbines must be sited in locations conducive to bird safety, and the proximity of the Everglades Agricultural Area to the Atlantic Migratory Flyway precludes the installation of wind turbines as a power generation source unless such a detection system is deployed at every turbine. Resolution regarding wind farming in Florida Whereas nearly all of peninsular Florida is within the Atlantic Migratory Flyway, and Whereas wind turbine operation in a major flyway would place resident and migratory birds in undue jeopardy, and Whereas recent innovations in wind turbine technology have produced computerized bird detection systems that result in a shutdown of rotors until the birds are at a safe distance, and Whereas the Everglades Agricultural Area is suited to and planned for Everglades restoration and windmill footing pads and the necessary maintenance infrastructure could counter the restoration effort Be it resolved that the Everglades Regional Conservation Committee is in favor of all forms of renewable energy, but wind turbines must be sited in locations conducive to bird safety, and the proximity of the Everglades Agricultural Area to the Atlantic Migratory Flyway precludes the installation of wind turbines as a power generation source. Be it further resolved that, if built, any footing pads must be constructed below grade and maintenance roads must be either elevated or equipped with sufficient culverts so as not to impede sheetflow requisite to a restored Everglades. Wind turbines have been fought all over the world for good reason. It’s time for the public to learn the truth about Big Wind, wind turbines, and to take action by engaging themselves in this issue, right away. On March 22nd at 9am the Palm Beach County Commission will vote on a proposal by Wind Capital Group to put 114 wind turbines in Belle Glade, just southwest of Lake Okeechobee. This will affect more than 12,000 acres to power far fewer than 60,000 homes. (Snail Kite and Swallow-tailed Kite territory) Think about it. 500 foot turbines in a major migratory flyway. Below you will find South Florida Audubon’s response and their resolution. I would like every Chapter in Florida to make the same resolution and send them in mass to Palm Beach County, to the Sun Sentinel and to the Tampa Bay Times. I would like all of you to write to oppose these turbines but please, reach out as far as you can and as often as you can until Wednesday night so as many people as possible have contacted the Palm Beach County Commission. Don’t just write, please also make a phone call to the Palm Beach Board of County Commissioners (BoCC). This may be one of the most important things I have ever asked of you. Many birds lives are at stake. I hope we can count on Florida Native Plant Society, and all Chapters of the Sierra Club to help with this effort. Below are two of my letters. One letter I sent to the Palm Beach Commission, and the other I sent to the Tampa Bay Times in response to an article Robert Trigaux wrote about energy in Florida. Power lines can be retrofitted and made bird safe, wind turbines cannot be retrofitted. A common sense approach is not to put turbines in Florida. This project is likely to power very few houses (much less than 60,000) but the acreage that will be disturbed is tremendous. If you think Big Wind’s estimation of avian kills at this location is ridiculously low, you are right. Bats are also killed in large numbers at wind turbines which could lead to an increase in mosquitoes and diseases that affected horses and people. The wind turbine issue is a fight for the soul of environmentalism in Florida. Don’t let them win. Thank you, Barb Walker Palm Beach Commission '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]' Sun Sentinel [email withheld] Tampa Bay Times Robert Trigaux - [email withheld] Craig Pittman – [email withheld] Letters to the Editor - http://www.sptimes.com/letters/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My letters: Tampa Bay Times Article http://www.tampabay.com/news/business/energy/article1219689.ece Mr. Trigaux, I want to thank you and the Tampa Bay Times for mentioning the Sugarland Wind Project in the recent article about the pickle we are in regarding energy. If you are a migratory bird, then that is a pretty sour pickle. Particularly if you are a Snail Kite or a Swallow-tailed Kite, or any neotropical species. Power companies have avian safe protocols to follow on their power systems. Luckily, threats to birds due to electrocution and collision can be minimized through retrofitting. Wind turbines cannot be retrofitted. Some species that are particularly threatened can't afford a higher mortality rate. There is lots of destruction during installation too, and decommissioning has to be part of the budget. The USFWS needs mandatory guidelines. I suggest they start with no wind turbines in major migratory flyways. I find it particularly objectionable that an effort to sway the public was made through a mass mailing in the form of a green washing campaign. The public needs time to disseminate the information. This is occurring across the country and it is outrageous, especially since the wind industry in general is heavily subsidized. I hope the Tampa Bay Times delves much deeper into that project, what it means to Floridians, and how that compares nationally. What are the anticipated impacts? Are they accurate? Will this set a precedent for Florida? How many wind turbines would it take installed in Florida to properly balance the loads without hurting reliability and safety and ruining the beautiful views that attract people here? Sincerely, Barbara Walker Palm Harbor, FL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Palm Beach Commission Letter '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]'; '[email withheld]' I want the Palm Beach County Commission put a moratorium of 6 – 12 months on consideration of the Sugarland Wind Project even though I know this will probably sail through P&Z tomorrow. Despite the fact that I live in Pinellas County a decision to put in 114 wind turbines on 12,000+ acres in between Belle Glade and the Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge still has the possibility to affect my quality of life. Even a test of any length could kill the particular Swallow-tailed Kites that nest behind my house of which I happen to enjoy. I think the fleece is being pulled over the public’s eyes across the country and I hope that people at local levels join both local and national efforts to at least properly site wind turbines. I think there should be a 6-12 month moratorium on this project so that accurate information can be given to the public as well. Instead it will probably just take a conditional use approval and variance from setback requirements and a quick board vote to put wind turbines in of all the places in the world the Everglades! This would be the only approval required by the county on a project of such a great magnitude with potential to affect many people, not all in Palm Beach County. I am a homeowner in Florida so I am a stakeholder too. There is plenty of evidence of the extensive habitat destruction that wind turbines create, not to mention service reliability issues on systems that have significant wind loads. Stronger national standards still need to be settled regarding wind guidelines, including full disclosure on height before county commissions should ever even consider these types of proposals. These are Goliath sized wind turbines and this is like a David and Goliath fight for true environmentalists with the heavily subsidized wind industry, particularly considering the huge pro wind PR campaign that green washes the real issues and perpetuates myths. I want people to write the commissioners who will vote on this to ask that they safe guard the public’s interest and allow plenty of time to debunk the myths about job creation too. Why not just leave this all up to the free market? People should also contact Bill Nelson’s office and ask him to reject any efforts to put in the payroll tax agreement a four-year extension of the so-called production tax credit. Read the original story at this link . For the second time, bald eagle released to the wild near Brooksville By Dominick Tao, Times Staff Writer In Print: Thursday, March 4, 2010 Link to article David A. Bruzek, the lead environmental specialist with Progress Energy, launches a bald eagle to freedom on Wednesday near Brooksville. So far, the world has been unkind to the eagle, known as No. 512. It was the second time in her 19 years that she has been released after rehabilitation. BROOKSVILLE — For the second time in her 19 years, Florida Bald Eagle No. 512 was thrown into the wind, sent off again on Wednesday into a world that has been unkind. The bird had spent the past three months at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, recovering from injuries she sustained last year in a fight to protect her nest in Palm Harbor. A younger female eagle kicked her out in late November, held her to the ground, plucked her chest feathers and skewered No. 512 with dagger-like talons. The usurper now has chicks with her ex-mate. Whether the scarred eagle's maternal instincts will carry her back to the place where her latest troubles started is unknown, said Lynda White, Florida's Audubon Society Eaglewatch coordinator. \"She could fly home today,\" White said. \"Hopefully, she won't.\" White carried the blindfolded No. [specific street address withheld] from Maitland to the Ahhochee Hill Audubon Sanctuary, a preserve just outside Brooksville, on Wednesday afternoon. David A. Bruzek, the lead environmental specialist with Progress Energy, was given the honor of throwing the eagle into the air. The company has been working with the society to make power lines safer for birds. A crowd of more than 30 looked on as the eagle's leather blinder was removed. No. 512 nearly took a chunk out of Bruzek's chin with her beak. Then, with a heave, he set her loose. \"Oh! Come on, get up! Get up!\" a woman called from the crowd. No. 512 clipped the branches of a small tree, then beat her wings and disappeared over the trees. Flying over the woods around Brooksville may have been bittersweet for No. 512, if bald eagles felt such things. It was near this same rural expanse that she was released back into the wild in 1998 after she had been shot with a bullet through her leg and wing two years earlier in Palm Harbor. According to society records back then, the eagle's caretakers questioned whether she could be released and survive. The hope is she will prove yet again to be as tough as eagles come. \"She's middle-aged, but hopefully she'll live for a long time to come,\" White said. This had been the last remaining population of Bald Eagles listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The FWS action was set in motion by an October 6, 2004, petition from the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), the Maricopa Audubon Society, and the Arizona Audubon Council requesting that the Sonoran Desert Bald Eagle population be classified as a distinct population segment (DPS) under the ESA, that this DPS be reclassified from threatened to endangered, and that FWS concurrently designate Critical Habitat for the DPS under the Act. On August 30, 2006, FWS denied the petition, saying that it did not present substantial scientific or commercial information indicating that the action may be warranted. Shortly afterwards, CBD and the Maricopa Audubon Society filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona challenging this finding. On July 9, 2007, FWS published the final rule removing all Bald Eagles in the lower 48 States, including those in the Sonoran Desert, from the ESA due to the species’ recovery. On August 17, 2007, CBD and the Maricopa Audubon Society filed a motion requesting the court make a decision on their pending lawsuit. Several Native American Tribes, including the San Carlos Apache Tribe, Yavapai-Apache Nation, Tonto Apache Tribe, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, submitted briefs in support of the motion. On March 5, 2008, the court ruled in favor of CBD and Maricopa Audubon, and put an injunction on the Service's final rule delisting the Sonoran Desert Bald Eagle pending a status review of the population to determine whether it qualified as a DPS, and if so, whether listing that DPS as threatened or endangered werewarranted. On February 25, 2010, the Service completed its status review and published a 12-month finding determining that the Sonoran Desert Bald Eagle did not qualify as a DPS and was therefore not a listable entity under the ESA. As a result, on September 30, 2010, the court lifted the March 5, 2008 injunction, enabling FWS to now issue this final rule to remove the Sonoran Desert Bald Eagle from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife. CBD has not determined at this time whether to appeal the court’s decision. With reference to their magnitude, female surpass the male bald eagles since they are big enough to be recognized easily. As compare to the male bald eagles, females are bigger by nearly 3 to 5 inches and reaching up to a size of almost 37 inches. Out of the four talons, one is at the rear called hallux while the rest are standing in front of the bird. So the male bald eagles have normally shorter hallux than their counterparts. Likewise, males usually have not as deep beaks as the female bald eagles have and the depth is gauged by measuring the distance from the uppermost part of the beak downwards, right toward the chin area. It is the common difference between male and female eagles. Besides, the sounds of two eagles may be another determining factor since the frequency of sounds varies greatly. It is evident that male bald eagle normally have high pitch sound as compare to the females. \"Last but not the least, the general difference between male and female eagles may be spotted by the variation in the approach of respective genders since females are relatively less violent than male eagles...\" The site includes a video that compares the male and female Decorah eagles. It mentions subtle differences in plumage that apply only to this particular pair, probably not useful for other individuals. Remember when the Pembroke Pines male had brown feathers in its tail? However, we could look for minor differences that can help us separate the sexes of our pair. Lacking a nest cam, our observations are from a greater distance and, truth be told, I often have trouble separating the sexes unless they are roosting together.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Difference-Between-Male-And-Female-Bald-Eagles-td7573645.html","images":0},{"id":"4636775","topic":"4636775","order":1,"title":"Thursday, Feb. 25th, 2:55pm to 4:20pm","author":"Ed Mattis","date":"2010-02-25T21:27:38.977000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Arrived around 2:55pm with no adults in the nest and only a head popping up now and then. Not sure how long he watched, but let's all be vigilant, and observe any \"empty\" nest for a more extended period of time. Sometime a second adult will visit the incubating bird and she may call out or rise up. If incubation has just started, the female alone will incubate, at least until all the eggs are laid and probably for a few days afterward. Then the pair may exchange incubation duties. In the past we have documented exchange of incubation duties as early as 8 and 16 days after the first egg was (presumably) laid. I will change the headline of my earlier post to reflect possible start of incubation.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Incubation-may-be-underway-as-of-December-11-please-check-the-nest-td7090717.html","images":0},{"id":"7095987","topic":"7090717","order":3,"title":"Re: Incubation may be underway as of December 11-- please check the nest","author":"fcalz","date":"2011-12-14T22:16:48.717000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"i saw an adult eagle very low in the nest today 12/14/11 at 3:45 P.M","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Incubation-may-be-underway-as-of-December-11-please-check-the-nest-td7090717.html","images":0},{"id":"7573588","topic":"7573588","order":1,"title":"Adult Eagle sighted","author":"Maria Rosa Drake","date":"2014-07-18T09:22:46.348000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Hi, I saw an adult eagle this morning (7:45am) on my way to work. Copies of the Steering Committee minutes and related documents are available at links near the top of the main \"Watching a Bald Eagle Nest\" page. There is also a draft plan with photos and a diagram of a possible configuration for the nest camera. Before obtaining sponsorship and funds, and at least 90 days before beginning actual installation of a nest camera, the Committee must draw up detailed specifications and determine initial and operating costs. At that point they plan to seek a permit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) In considering the specific plans for an eagle nest camera, the Committee faces a logistical problem that could adversely impact the eagles. In at least one prior nest camera permit, the FWC has required that the camera must be located on a separate structure, at least 20 feet from the nest, There appears to be no hard and fast written regulation establishing this requirement, so it is possible that FWC may be able to use some discretion in evaluating our plan to have the camera placed on the nest tree itself. There is one particularly good reason to place the camera on the nest tree. The US Fish and Wildlife Service nest camera in West Virginia is placed on the nest tree, with a very good view of the nest. It includes live sound. By installing the camera on the tree itself, the camera moves with the nest when the wind blows, providing a very stable and sharp image. If you have spent any time looking at the nest, you have seen how much that tree sways in even light breezes. Our local nest has several large branches, located just above the nest, that would be quite suitable for a camera. Modern Web cameras are small and unobtrusive. There is another valid reason for allowing an exception for our local nest. If FWC holds to this restrictive policy, the only alternative would be to put up a very tall pole to hold the camera. It certainly could not be put on another tree, as both the camera and the nest would move in the wind, usually in different directions. Construction of a pole and camera platform would require clear-cutting a path to the nest tree to allow entry of heavy equipment, a much greater (and more permanent) disturbance to the eagles' habitat than if a small camera were installed on one of the large branches in the nest tree. The City would have to give permission, and itself may need to seek a permit from FWC. As shown in the diagram, and enclosure for the equipment that receives and translates the camera's signal could be located near the property line, away from the nest. At yesterday's Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee meeting, the feasibility of even carrying out the Nest Cam project under these circumstances came into question. Should Doug Young, the Chairman of the group be asked to abandon efforts towards having a Nest Cam in place before the fall of 2010, in time for the eagles' next breeding season? In debating this question, it became clear that the Steering Committee desires, however reluctantly, to provide Doug with discretion to continue to consider alternative camera placements. There was consensus that the Steering Committee's concerns must be forcibly expressed as soon as possible, in a meeting with FWC, with a view to obtaining their provisional opinion as to feasibility of placing the camera on the nest tree. Most nest cameras in Florida are placed at Osprey nests. These nests are usually on rigid platforms that do not move in the wind, so there is no issue of distortion of the image. They also tend to be in more open locations, not in the middle of a woodland. Perhaps the FWC policy was instituted with such a situation in mind. Doug will be in contact with FWC officials as soon as possible. Keep tuned in, and enjoy the eagle camera!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/A-Nest-Camera-for-the-Pembroke-Pines-Bald-Eagles-td4482492.html","images":0},{"id":"4483467","topic":"4482492","order":2,"title":"Re: A Nest Camera for the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagles?","author":"vdelauz","date":"2010-01-29T19:47:37.816000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Ken, For me, the timing of your post couldn't have been more coincidental because the thought of a nest cam crossed my mind when you e-mailed me about the unknown of how many eggs/chicks the eagle actually has. As I read your comment, I thought about how great a nest cam could be, especially for collecting better data on the eagles. Remember the adults feeding the chick(s), but how we were unsure of where the prey actually came from? Was it cached in the nest? Possibly, but unlikely, regurgitated? Was it too small to see as they brought it to the nest? Well, these and many other questions could have easily been answered had there been a nest cam installed. I'm no expert, but something tells me that if the eagles built the nest there and came back to the use the same nest for a second time, then they are more than comfortable with the traffic, the noise, the surroundings, the observers and, by all means, something as simple, small and useful as a nest cam. If it gets to the point where there is a public meeting needed for a debate about the placement or subsequent approval for this proposed nest cam, please post this information as I would love to be a willing participant. When hatched the eaglet is completely covered with down. As its dark body and flight feathers emerge they replace the down. The down persists for over a month and is especially noticeable on the head. As you probably know, the eagle incubates each egg as soon as it is laid, causing the eaglets to hatch sequentially rather than all at once as is the case with most other birds. The size differential may also be related to the sex of the eaglets. Females are larger at all stages of life, and 2 out of 3 first eggs produce a female. The second-hatched is more likely a male. If so, this can be a good sign, as they are less likely to be in conflict than if a male hatches first and must then compete with an aggressive and fast-growing younger female sibling. These two seem to be getting along with each other-- let's hope! The smaller eaglet is probably about three days younger than the first-hatched, although it is within the realm of possibility that there could have been a second egg which failed to hatch, meaning that the young one could be up to a week younger than its sibling. The older eaglet hatched on or about February 5, so it is six weeks old this weekend.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eaglets-active-today-March-18-2017-td7574737.html","images":0},{"id":"7574739","topic":"7574737","order":3,"title":"Re: Eaglets active today, March 18, 2017","author":"tczig","date":"2017-03-19T11:26:29.707000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"Thanks Ken for the great reply; I learned something new today. Only the top of its head was visible. After 15 minutes another adult flew in from the east, carrying some fine nesting material. The arriving bird seemed to be quite large, and its gape extended well past the middle of its eye, suggesting it was the female. Other observers have noted a \"dark spot\" on the right side of the female's face. This bird had black smudges at the base of its bill on the right and its forehead was also stained. Ground observations suggest that incubation had commenced about 2-3 days ago. Both were off the nest 4 days previously, which would be unusual if egg-laying had commenced. One observer said that he witnessed an exchange of incubation duties 2 days previously. The (presumably male) bird stayed deep in the nest for the entire 45 minutes that I observed the nest. The other bird rearranged some nest material and then, after about 5 minutes, flew to roost on the right nest support branch. I'm not sure why no one will answer Stephanie's request of where the new location is, maybe they just don't know where it is, and I'm not trying to say anything bad about anyone, but I have never kept any information from anyone in these forums because I believe that these are Gods creatures and if anyone wants to see them who am I to keep them from it, I have never seen a Bald Eagle in my whole lifetime until this group of eagles came into my life and I have been enjoying it ever since and I hope that anyone else that wants to experience the sight of this great bird that they will be able to, so I share everything about these eagles that I can. I first saw them soaring above the garbage dump hill with the vultures when I was flying remote control gliders up on the Trash hill on Green Road and I thought what the hell is a Bald Eagle doing in Florida, so I started researching it and found out that there are 2 states in the USA that have more bald Eagles nests than any other state and it's Alaska and Florida, I thought that was incredible! So I found this web site (Bald Eagles of Broward) and I started going to Quiet Waters park with my mountain bike and my camera looking for the nest and I found it, I have been flowing them ever since that first encounter, and it has changed my life. Lets hope that this pair of eagles has a successful nesting season, and hopefully more that one chick this year. I will report to you as soon as I find out where they are building their nest. An adult flew over the unpaved portion of Miramar Parkway in west Miramar at about 7:10 AM, which is 15 minutes after sunrise. A juvenile eagle followed close behind. Both followed the usual course in a line from the nest area to the large (Lighthouse) lake in Sunset Lakes. Surely this was Spirit. She probably will not have time to wander north as she must still be gaining skills by hunting with the adult. The adult was out over the lake but the juvenile flew close by. I've been to the eagle nest at Pritchett farm and am an avid eagle watcher and everyone is extremely respectful of the “rules”. The professional photographers do not go up close but their lenses are a mile long!!!!! People just don’t get it. I went to the park to see the nest with only good intentions. I couldn’t find it. How can I get there so I can photograph with a long lense? I live in Delray Beach and pass it every day when I go to work!!!!!
