When I arrived there were several watchers that had been there since 7 am and hadn't seen any eagles. The nest remained empty until one of the young flew in about an hour later. It looked around the nest and stood a few minutes and then took off to the west. A few minutes later some watchers that had been down past the dead stand of trees to the west and said that the [specific street address withheld] far back sitting near each other in a dead tree. We would occasionally spot an eagle (both juvenile and adult, separately) soaring very high over the area, but they didn't land in the nest or perch near us. Several more times a juvenile would fly to the nest, land, look around and depart quickly (I think the cupboard/refrigerator was empty). I hope we get an afternoon report to see if this lack of nest feeding continues or picks up again as it has in the past. Several new watchers came by and were disappointed to not see any eagles. Your thoughts? Are there any similar installations where they have overcome this? The problem I see is the intended flexibility of the high-mast light pole. As you know when using your telephoto lens, the slightest movement makes viewing erratic and the condition worsens with distance. Other long distance cams are probably fixed with steadfast connections to non-moving concrete or similar poles. Just some thoughts on the matter. An even bigger problem is the movement of the nest tree itself, which would greatly exceed that of the pole. That's why my first idea was to try to put the camera on the nest tree itself-- it would sway with the wind and the nest would always be in the same place while the surroundings moved back and forth. FWC did not look favorably on this plan, insisting that the camera be placed in a separate platform at least 10 feet away. One camera supplier also recommended against this approach, although a USF&WS nest camera in West Virginia is indeed mounted on a branch in the nest tree itself! There is really no solution for this-- the nest would simply not be very visible during high winds, even though the pole is quite a bit more rigid than the tree. If everything goes according to plan, the camera will be robotic, permitting it to be zoomed in and out. When the winds are high it could be zoomed out to help alleviate the problem. The biggest obstacle right now is getting the plan put into effect. We should know where we stand within a very few days. If approved and funded, we could start immediately, as installation would not involve disturbance of the eagles, and no FWC permit would be required (as confirmed by FWC).","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-Camera-Concerns-at-Far-Light-Pole-td6004528.html","images":0},{"id":"7573843","topic":"7573843","order":1,"title":"DEC 15 Pride in nest alone at 10:20 AM","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-12-15T14:23:41.904000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"We made a quick visit to the nest, arriving aout 10:20 AM. We need it to determine equipment needs for a nest camera. With a known angle between the two readings, the height could be calculated using trigonometry. There may be an instrument that will do this without hand-calculating the geometry to derive the height. If not, using simple algebra (Pythagorean Theorem). Since the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the two remaining sides, it would be necessary to measure the distance from observer to the to the bottom of the tree (A), and from the same point, the distance diagonally upward to the nest (C). To calculate the third leg of the triangle (X), the first measurement would need to be a level line at ground level (impossible), or a level line at a known height (h) above the bottom of the tree (to provide a right angle with the trunk). The observer's height would then be added to the calculated height above the sight point. Check my math-- it's been (too) many years since high school algebra. I won't dare try the trig without a slide rule-- do they still make them? Sorry I do not have superscripts -- ( ^2) means \"squared.\" (A ^2) + (X ^2) = (C ^2) then solve for (X), which is the distance to nest above the sight point, and add the distance from the ground to the sight point. Simple? (C ^2) / (A ^2) = (X ^2) Square root of (X ^2) = (X), the distance up from sight point on tree trunk to nest Then add distance from ground (h) + X = height of nest. Easy!!! My guess is 45 feet. Hope it is a little less.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/What-is-the-height-of-the-eagle-nest-Attn-All-Engineers-td4503160.html","images":0},{"id":"7297766","topic":"7297766","order":1,"title":"February 18","author":"hall48","date":"2012-02-18T17:54:44.879000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"I stopped by the nest around 1:30 PM today and stayed for about an hour. I did see one at the West Pines Soccer Park and Nature Preserve ([specific nest-location detail withheld], only about a mile away.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/February-18-td7297766.html","images":0},{"id":"7574741","topic":"7574741","order":1,"title":"Naming the Eaglets","author":"Lisa G","date":"2017-03-22T10:12:35.207000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"We are having a naming contest for the Baby Eaglets on our Facebook :)","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Naming-the-Eaglets-td7574741.html","images":0},{"id":"7574749","topic":"7574741","order":2,"title":"Re: Status update?","author":"LuiFalcon","date":"2017-04-05T10:02:42.196000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"Hi all, I've been away for a while, can someone tell me if Jewel, or the nest in Pembrooke pines is active? Neither chick was on the nest, and no adults or chicks were visible nearby or in the Melaleucas. At 9:15 an adult flew into the nest, followed very closely by one of the chicks. Just as the adult was dropping the food, the other chick came in and almost knocked her out of the nest. The adult quickly roosted on the tree to the east. Hope began eating, and Justice was watching. As soon as Hope lifted her head up to take a break, Justice quickly grabbed a bit of food. They began to squabble, and then Justice kept to the side. Justice tried this several times but was rebuffed. At 10 AM Hope must have had enough to eat, and flew off. Justice began picking at the leavings. At 10:15 it began to pour rain. We returned to the car, leaving Justice on the nest and the adult female still roosting on the tree to the east. The sky stayed dark and rain continued, so we left at 10:30 AM. When the young come into the nest followed by or just before an adult it is almost always preceded by calling that sounds like it comes from the trees behind the nest and to the west. I guess it's possible that they could be flying together and as they approach the nest the kids get excited and call because its mealtime.....but it just seems more like a greeting. It also appears that whenever an adult leaves the nest, it is to preen alone in a pine and then fly off solo. It really would be so interesting to compare data on urban eagles to those completely in the wild. Even though it doesn't seem like the adults are afraid or bothered by cars, humans, etc., maybe it makes them more cautious and protective in handling the eaglets once they fly? I keep remembering what the first FWC officer said that came to look for Hope the first day.....some young eagles don't return to the nest after their first flight. Also, I've read from Ken and others that the hunting is more instinctual than taught. With ours...that may not kick in until the parental food delivery shuts down. Another factor could be that food is so plentiful in the range area that the adults can find plenty to feed both themselves and their young for a longer time than at other locations. It's fun to speculate, if nothing else!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/This-morning-Wednesday-April-15-td2639812.html","images":0},{"id":"2653633","topic":"2639812","order":5,"title":"Re: This morning, Wednesday April 15","author":"Kelly Smith","date":"2009-04-17T19:49:41.762000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I, too, have read that the fledglings learn to hunt on their own. It appears that a third chick has not been seen since April 24th, when one was about 15 feet off the ground. Since the chicks are now moving around it is difficult to be certain of the total number. However, they have tended to roost together for the first couple of weeks after fledging, and to come together at the nest for feedings (even flying in with a parent that may be bringing in a prey item). On the 25th and 26th, only two were seen feeding and roosting together, so this may be evidence that one chick may be unable to get to the nest. If this observation is confirmed today, I suggest that Brian Mealey and/or FWS be so notified of the possibility that an eaglet may be down and injured. They can decide whether to conduct or authorize a search of the area around the nest tree.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagle-Breeding-Season-Milestone-Spreadsheet-td3268427.html","images":0},{"id":"7575102","topic":"7575102","order":1,"title":"Two eagles on nest-10-26-18","author":"Sally","date":"2018-10-26T17:25:13.636000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Happy to report the eagles were busy on the nest this morning. I don't remember any signs at the pull off section on 10th st it faces the nest and doesn't disturb them since its right on the road. Best to only stay about half hour but on the weekends far less traffic","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Two-eagles-on-nest-10-26-18-td7575102.html","images":0},{"id":"7575122","topic":"7575102","order":12,"title":"Re: Two eagles on nest-10-26-18","author":"naturegirl","date":"2018-11-20T07:41:56.904000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"I just got back any update on the eagle couple ?","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Two-eagles-on-nest-10-26-18-td7575102.html","images":0},{"id":"7575123","topic":"7575102","order":13,"title":"Re: Two eagles on nest-Updated 11-22-18","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2018-11-22T09:27:53.929000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hello, Yes, I was there this morning and both eagles were at the nest, the female was doing work on the nest and the male brought a fish to the female and she didn't eat it so he took it back and ate it, and then they mated and sat in a near by tree next to each other. I don't think there is any eggs yet, but any day now so they can hatch near Christmas day like the last 2 years. I will be trying to go to the nest fort the next 3 days at sunrise. I'm hoping to see them sitting deep in the nest indicating that there is eggs! The 3rd pic is the mating, very dark and behind a tree branch, I didn't want to disturb them, the other 3 are more clear, She is on the left in the last pic. The yellow color in the first 2 pics is \"Golden Hour\" color from sunrise. Happy Holidays everyone.
