Of interest is the fact that Florida's Bald Eagle population has nearly plateaued since 2002. This is usually attributed to lack of additional suitable habitat. Could other factors be at work as well? Bald Eagles Prove Full of Flame Retardants http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/bald-eagles-prove-full-of-flame-retardants/ Michigan's bald eagles may be getting flame retardants from old couches and other discards February 9, 2015 By Brian Bienkowski and Environmental Health News | Research on PBDEs suggests the compounds might harm highly exposed birds. Michigan’s bald eagles are among the most contaminated birds on the planet when it comes to phased-out flame retardant chemicals in their livers, according to new research. The study, published last month in the Journal of Great Lakes Research, found that the top predators in the Great Lakes are highly exposed to banned flame retardants, still widespread in the environment. Michigan’s population of bald eagles is stable, but the compounds have been linked in other birds to impaired reproduction, weird behavior and development, and hormone disruption. “While the sensitivity of eagles to PBDEs has yet to be determined, there is a possibility that the exposures reported here may be associated with sub-clinical effects,” Nil Basu, an associate professor at McGill University who led study while at the University of Michigan, said in an email. More than four decades ago, companies started putting polybrominated diphenyl ethers, PBDEs, into furniture cushions, electronics and clothing in an effort to slow the spread of flames if they catch fire. The chemicals quickly built up in people and the environment. Starting in the early 2000s, phase-outs began. PBDEs have been found in air, dirt and people in virtually every corner of the globe, including the Great Lakes region. The compounds can leach out of products they were used in and stay in the environment for a long time. It’s most likely the eagles are exposed through eating contaminated fish. But the chemicals also can enter landfills, latch onto dust and be inhaled, or be licked off the feathers, Basu said. The chemicals \"are everywhere,” Basu said. “They build up in the food chains so that top predators – such as bald eagles – accumulate high levels.” Flame-retardants have been found in birds all over the world – from the United States to China. The researchers tested the liver tissues of 33 dead bald eagles collected from 2009 to 2011 by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. They tested for four common types of PBDEs; all but two of the birds had all four compounds in their liver. PBDE concentrations were \"among the highest found in liver tissues of any wildlife,” the authors wrote, with one eagle measuring 1,538 parts per billion PBDEs in its liver. Americans have some of the highest levels of PBDEs in their bodies worldwide, with studies of U.S. breast milk finding median PBDE concentrations of about 30 ppb, though the types of PBDEs vary. Tom Cooley, a wildlife pathologist with Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources, is in charge of figuring out why animals die in Michigan. In bald eagles it’s often things such as electrocutions, getting hit by cars, or lead poisoning, he said. The state does not usually test wildlife for flame-retardants. The four major PBDE compounds found in the bald eagles were from the flame retardant sold commercially as penta-PBDE mixture, used in plastics, wire insulation, cars and some textiles. In 2009, penta, along with another common mixture octa, were added to the United Nations Stockholm Convention as persistent pollutants to be phased out by countries around the world. But, just as its chemical predecessors, PBDEs are “very persistent” once they get into the environment, said Marta Venier, an assistant scientist with Indiana University. “We can expect to see PBDEs in wildlife for a long time,” she said. In the current study, the researchers also found PBDEs in the liver tissue of all 35 dead river otters that were collected throughout Wisconsin from 2009 to 2010. Bald eagles nest statewide in Michigan, Cooley said. The state’s birds – just like the rest of the nation – were on the brink of extinction in the 1950s and early 1960s, mostly due to chemicals such as PCBs and DDT in pesticides. In the late 1960s researchers recognized the problem and chemical bans and species protection spurred a comeback. Michigan’s population is strong and has been going up, Cooley said. “We have about 750 active nests throughout the state,” he said. Research on PBDEs suggests the compounds might harm highly exposed birds. There is “great concern” about the exposure because eagles are not only exposed to flame retardants but “hundreds of other potentially toxic chemicals,” Basu said. “We know very little of how contaminants interact to affect health,” he said. Much of the research on what PBDE exposure might mean to birds has been done on captive kestrels. Canadian researchers have found that exposure to the compounds as an embryo caused development and reproduction problems in male birds. They’ve also linked exposure to lower nest temperatures, smaller eggs with thinner shells, delayed egg laying, and odd behavior such as fewer mating calls and eating less. Chemicals do not impact all bird species in the same way so it is unclear how, if at all, the compounds impact Michigan’s bald eagles. “If there were health problems, it would be kind of under the radar and we wouldn’t necessarily notice in the [dead] birds we got in here,” Cooley said. The bald eagles might have more flame-retardants in them than recent research indicates. “They focused on a small range of PBDEs,” Venier said, adding that there are many other mixtures outside of the four the group studied. Basu said that banned PBDEs should eventually decrease in the eagles but, he cautioned, “it can take years or decades for this to occur.” In addition, there are now replacement flame-retardants, too, with unknown but potentially worrisome environmental health risks. “The market of flame retardants is a bit like a whack-a-mole game,” Venier said. “One gets phased out and another one is introduced keeping properties similar to the one it replaced. “It goes on and on.” Read more about the health of the world’s birds in our series Winged Warnings. Expected hatch date (5 weeks) on or before JAN 4 DEC 24 - Adult carrying grass to nest JAN 2 - Incubation exchange; Male sitting high as if possibly \"tenting\" an eaglet, looking down. Female then also was sitting higher after exchange. JAN 4 & 10 -- High winds buffeted the nest and part of the right side appears to have fallen down. JAN 10 -- Both adults moving sticks, building up the rim. JAN 25 -- Adults \"copulated.\" It is not unusual for the male to mount the female outside the normal mating season, but might it be possible that she was fertile and receptive because the first brood was lost? There was a prey drop, usually a sign that eaglets are present, but was this a courtship \"gift\" which we has accompanied copulation in the past? Remember that this happened with the same female (Jewel) during the 2015-16 season. The nest was damaged and first brood lost around JAN 19, 2016. We thought they had abandoned the nest around JAN 28, 2016, but they reappeared the next day. Her second clutch of eggs was probably laid around FEB 10 and hatched MAR 16; the first eaglet was seen on MAR 31, 2016. (We usually see an eaglet by the time it is 2-2 1/2 weeks old). Since then, the adults have been sitting very deep in the nest and taking turns as if incubating and no prey drops have been noted. Phil shares my concerns-- He wrote (Feb 11) and provided this photo-- Hi Ken, I was out to the nest this morning for almost an hour, till 10:45. I observed Pride down low in the nest. He looked up once as if looking for his mate, than went back down in the nest and could not be seen... After today’s visit to the nest, I agree with you. I don’t think there are any Eaglets and they either have a second clutch or trying to have one. Trying to be objective and throwing away my wishful thinking, it appears doubtful, to me, there will be Eaglets this season. I have been reviewing my notes of past years and by this time we should have seen or heard babies. Also, the adults behavior and interactions are so very different than years past. I guess all we can do is watch and wait and see what plays out. A Merlin (or, upon looking at these photos, was it a Peregrine Falcon?) gave us a few distant shots, and a Great Egret foraged in the new ditch created by the sidewalk that now forms a dam between the road and the wetland woods containing the nest. It was perched on a tree beyond the eagle nest, probably about 300 feet from our vantage point in the median of Pines Boulevard.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Incubating-female-on-nest-December-22-day-11-td7120202.html","images":5},{"id":"7573878","topic":"7573878","order":1,"title":"Anyone seen the New Female ?","author":"Lisa G","date":"2014-12-29T15:47:24.465000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Has anyone seen the new Female at all ?","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Anyone-seen-the-New-Female-td7573878.html","images":0},{"id":"7573895","topic":"7573878","order":2,"title":"Re: Anyone seen the New Female ?","author":"AlbertoRada","date":"2015-01-04T12:06:43.676000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"She was at the nest on December 31st at 2:00 pm","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Anyone-seen-the-New-Female-td7573878.html","images":1},{"id":"7573897","topic":"7573878","order":3,"title":"Re: Anyone seen the New Female ?","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-01-04T18:54:15.014000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Beautiful image, Alberto! I have never seen an eaglet do this, although adults bring in nesting material even after the eaglets hatch-- often it is nest lining material which may be added to cover the left-over prey remains and perhaps deter flies. As has been said, they \"sweep the dirt under the carpet.\" In this case I assume that you did not see the eaglet return to the nest with the material. Perhaps it was exercising an instinctive behavior that will later become necessary for survival once it must build a nest of its own. Maybe you have researched this and have found references to like behavior in eaglets? If not it will be interesting to know if it has been documented previously. We can learn a great deal by observing eagles \"live\" from the ground. A nest camera tends to provide a more intimate but also much narrower view of their activities.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/5-7-14-Eaglet-displays-breaking-twig-behavior-photo-td7573556.html","images":0},{"id":"7573558","topic":"7573556","order":3,"title":"Re: 5/7/14 - Eaglet displays breaking twig behavior - photo","author":"KellyHeffernan Proj Perch","date":"2014-05-09T18:27:51-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Maybe the eaglet is modeling what it sees its parents doing? If incubation has begun it is very likely that it was the female sitting in the nest. I'd only be guessing, but this eagle appears slimmer around the belly. This is most likely due to staining, but remember that the male showed brown tips on his tail feathers for two seasons. Bears close watching. This is a matter of public safety. I'n not sure whether the big roadside \"sandwich\" signs do more harm than good by calling more attention to the nest site by slowing down traffic and attracting passers-by. That would be a call for the City, as they have been putting them up for the past couple of years. The sidewalk in front of the nest is an \"existing disturbance\" (as is Pines Boulevard itself) under the FWC guidelines and has been tolerated by the eagles in the past. It is a convenience and safety factor for students and other members of the public who must walk for and from the bus stops. Once the eggs are laid they are less likely to abandon the nest anyway. By complaining we risk having the City further restrict viewing, as presently they do leave us alone when we park on the other side and in the south portion of the 209th Avenue cul-de-sac. I think education of the eagle watchers might accomplish more than asking for additional restrictions. We were so pleased when we got them to put up the fence because photographers had been walking right in under the nest. Certainly the \"No Parking\" signs should be restored and the educational signs would be helpful.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Lunch-arrived-12-12pm-td7573254.html","images":0},{"id":"7573271","topic":"7573254","order":11,"title":"Re: Lunch arrived @ 12:12pm :)","author":"Liza","date":"2013-12-10T22:50:17.227000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"I tend to agree with Ken as he's made some valid points , the one sign for the no parking is further east of the nest that many do not see and park before the sign basically in front facing the nest the sign maybe should be placed more towards the east as the drivers would not miss it and will avoid even stopping any cars within that area ..... I don't think the eagles feel threatened by standing within the grass or even sidewalk but it does worry me that some may risk going beyond the fence as it's not secure at the moment . It was 50 degrees (F) with a brisk wind from the north. We immediately heard very loud cries coming from the nest. Both adults were together on a branch a few feet above the nest, flapping their wings and shrieking. There may have been a mating attempt, or they were fighting. Before I could raise my binoculars or camera, the female suddenly dropped directly down on the nest, not in controlled flight, and the calls stopped. The male continued roosting above the nest for a few minutes while the female engaged in feeding the young chick(s). One chick popped its head up quite high, but had almost disappeared from sight when I took a few photos. Only the top of the head of one nestling was visible. The male then flew out towards the road and to the east, disappearing to the south at the corner of 208th Avenue. Several of my photos strongly suggest that the female has been recently injured. Abrasions or small lacerations were visible both above and below the anterior brow. The lower injury was quite close to her left eye. Sometimes the birds get bloodied from dissecting prey, but this does not look like simple blood smear. I wish we had arrived just a couple of minutes earlier so we could better interpret the unusual behavior. The female then settled down to shelter the eaglet, and almost disappeared from sight.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/One-eaglet-seen-possible-minor-injury-to-female-adult-td7278159.html","images":4},{"id":"7575379","topic":"7575379","order":1,"title":"OCT 27: Bald Eagle sighting at Quiet Waters","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2019-10-27T18:28:28.345000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"New Member Mike 30 messaged me today to report a Bald Eagle sighting at Quiet Waters-- (October 27) We were Kayaking this morning and saw one to the north side of the park. The common assumption is they need the skill to be able to snatch the food form competitors (there are youtube videos showing such displays)..and of course for mating...Eagles met high in the air and \"Dance in the Sky\" locking talons while spinning down. Showing they possess the skill and have the body control while falling at great speed may convince the potential mate of the suitor's worth.... In Pinellas County we had a young female eagle in rehab for a couple of months and it cost the center over $1000 dollars. We really appreciate the postivie impact that the Audubon Bird of Prey Center has on eagle populations. April 2009 Dear Audubon EagleWatch Volunteer, Baby bird season is upon us and each spring Audubon Center for Birds of Prey holds our Baby-Bird-a-Thon to help defray the increased costs incurred during this busy season. In May alone, we receive 20% of our annual patient load. Fortunately, most of these young birds have been temporarily displaced from their nests. The Center’s ultimate goal is to get all babies back into the wild where they belong, and we need your help! With an average of 100 baby mouths to feed, you can help us help them by pledging $1.00, $5.00 or $10.00 for each baby raptor we help in the month of May. You may also choose to send a flat donation, for every penny counts. Funds raised will help supply baby food, medications, medical care and other essential supplies. To give you an idea of what it takes to care for these youngsters, last year we admitted 122 birds and it took: FOOD…lots of it…287 pounds of fish, 148 quail, 595 chicks, 679 mice, 93 rats, 5000 crickets and 4000 mealworms. We went through two knives and three pairs of scissors cutting it all up into baby-size portions! Some nestlings require feeding 5 times daily! HYDRATION…12,000 ml of fluids were administered CLEAN-UP…we washed 956 baby blankets and used 150 pounds of newspaper to keep these babies snuggly LABOR…500+ volunteer hours were donated to rescue, feed, clean cages and care for the babies. We are counting on your support. You can “Reply” to [email withheld] with the amount of your pledge or you can visit https://loon.audubon.org/payment/donate/FLEagleCam.html to donate on line. You can also mail us your pledge or donation to our address listed below. All donations are tax deductible. The eaglets, which hatched in January in western Pembroke Pines, have begun to fly. In the past two weeks, the offspring of the only known nesting pair of bald eagles in Broward County have hopped from branch to branch, hovered while beating their wings, and begun making short flights to other trees. \"It's like watching a toddler learning to walk,\" said Michelle van Deventer, bald eagle plan coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The two eaglets, named Honor and Glory by a local eagle protection group, are both thought to be female, said Ken Schneider, a birder who has served on a city board dedicated to protecting them. One of them is distinctly dominant, and on a Monday afternoon, with the adults absent, it could be seen raising its wings to block the other from the food it was eating. But the adults have made sure both get enough food, elbowing the dominant one out of the way to make sure the other could eat. The food is a mix of prey brought back to the nest – fish, birds made up primarily of cattle egrets and white ibises, although once they brought home a tricolored heron. The eaglets learned to fly in careful steps. \"Flight skills need to be developed, especially landing. Taking off is more about courage, landing is the skill,\" van Deventer said. The week or two of flight are the period of maximum danger, with each step putting the eagles in danger of ending up on the ground with a broken wing. \"If they're grounded, they're easy prey for a bobcat or coyote,\" Schneider said. Given the dangers of the first days of flight, members of a group of volunteers who watch the nest were pretty nervous. When one eaglet disappeared for a few days, one of them called the police. A search found the eaglet perched in a nearby melaleuca tree. \"No one has reported a long free flight,\" Schneider said. \"We've seen them fly from branch to branch, and so they're flight capable, and pretty soon they're going to start soaring.\" The dangers are not over, of course. Although bald eagles in the wild typically live 15 to 20 years, only about half of eaglets will make it to adulthood. Hazards include road kills, electrical wires and disease. Once they have completed their flight training, the eaglets will embark on their first migration north, a trip that could take them up to Chesapeake Bay. The eaglets are likely to leave by June, van Deventer said. After that, they will strike out on their own and live as aerial nomads for the next few years, until they reach sexual maturity and build nests of their own. Eagles do try to return to their nests, begging their parents for food and occasionally getting it. More often, their parents regard them with the cold eyes with which human parents would regard a grown son or daughter moving back home after college. We had two of the young of previous seasons come back,\" Schneider said. \"One about four years old, with a two year old, and the two parents chased them away.\" The Pembroke Pines eagles, whose nest was discovered seven years ago, are an indication of the recovery of a species that had been down to just 80 nesting pairs statewide 40 years ago. Following the banning of the pesticide DDT in 1972, there are more than 1,500 nesting pairs in Florida, home to the third-largest population in the United States, after Alaska and Minnesota,. Hopefully, the Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Pembroke Pines will be soon teaming up to place a camera on the light pole opposite our eagle nest on Pines Boulevard. Notice the traffic noises around this nest-- sounds familiar! Bob Andrini, President of Kane County (Illinois) Audubon Society sent me this e-mail with a link to an excellent nest camera view of the incubating adult. The site contains links to other nest cameras. You must first view a brief commercial, but it is worth the wait! (Attracting advertisers helps support the site) This is a live 24-hour camera that's on an eagles' nest in Iowa. They're expecting them to lay eggs any day now (last year, she laid 3!), and then it takes about 35 days for them to hatch. We've seen some pretty amazing--and sometimes rather graphic--footage of them having dinner, building the nest up, and sharpening their beaks. The kids are glued to this, and we are too...we've found that the best times to catch them in their nest are right around daybreak, at lunch, and early evening. Enjoy! The Raptor Resource Project brings you the Decorah Eagles from atop their tree at the fish hatchery in Decorah, Iowa. Visit our website: www.raptorresource.org FIRST EGG LAID 2/23/11 about 5:30 p.m. CST Here are videos, the first part when she lays the egg, the second part when we get our first look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRevYtdjj5U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8YKxFmC0Pc FAQ How high is the nest? About 80 feet. How big is the nest? 5-6 feet across, about the same deep; it weighs about 1½ tons. How old is the nest? The eagles built it in 2007. A previous nest close by fell when a windstorm broke one of the branches. Are these eagles banded? No. Which is the male and which is the female? It is hard to tell the difference unless they are both on the nest. The female is larger than the male. This female has a ridge above her eyes that goes further back than on the male, and her eyes are surrounded by a greyish shadow; the male has a line around his eyes that makes them look “beadier.” Some think that the male’s head is “sleeker” than the female’s. What is the history of this pair? They have been together since the winter of 2007-2008. Her markings at that time indicated that she was about 4 years old. They successfully hatched and fledged 2 eaglets in 2008, then 3 in 2009, and 3 more in 2010. When were the eggs laid in 2010, and when did they hatch? First egg was February 25, second on February 28, third on March 5. First hatch was April 3, second on April 6, third on April 9. All three eaglets fledged and are now on the wing but are not being tracked. What is the area around the nest like? The nest is in a cottonwood tree on private property near the Decorah Fish Hatchery (operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources), on the banks of the babbling waters of Trout Run in extreme northeast Iowa. The nest can be seen from the hatchery, but visitors to the hatchery should keep their distance from the nest tree, both to respect the private property where the tree is located and to avoid disturbing the eagles. Here is a ground-level video of the surroundings, taken in March 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDzAh7trL2A This video shows the eagles’ point of view: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYMObPADuIw Where can I see pictures and videos of these eagles? An archive of daily views of the nest over the immediate 24-hour period, taken every 2 minutes, can be found at http://www.raptorresource.org/decorah_eagles/5am.php Click on Eagle Dailies. RRP has a YouTube site with many videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/ries96 Who operates and maintains this cam? The Raptor Resource Project (RRP) maintains the cams, of which there are two. Both are positioned on one of the nest’s supporting limbs about 4-5 feet above the nest. The main cam is automated and is trained on the nest. The other cam has pan-tilt-zoom capabilities (PTZ). The main cam switches to infrared night-time view at dark and is streamed online 24/7. Who does the panning, tilting, and zooming, and when does that happen? Bob Anderson, Executive Director of RRP, switches to the PTZ cam most days between about 9 and 10 a.m., and when there appears to be interesting activity in the nest. He will be especially attentive when egg-laying and hatching begin, from late February. Where can I find out more about this nest? Some articles in local papers about cam upgrades, with photos of cam installation, have featured the nest: http://www.easterniowaoutdoors.com/2010/11/03/decorah-eagle-nest-cam-gets-high-tech-upgrade/ http://thegazette.com/2011/01/12/new-decorah-eagle-cam-yielding-stunning-images/ The nest was featured in the January-February 2011 issue of Iowa Outdoors, which can be purchased online. What is the Raptor Resource Project? Established in 1988, the non-profit Raptor Resource Project specializes in the preservation of falcons, eagles, ospreys, hawks, and owls. We establish and strengthen breeding populations of these raptors by creating, improving, and maintaining nests and nest sites. In addition to directly managing over twenty-three falcon, eagle, and owl nest sites, we provide training in nest site creation and management across the United States, reach more than 85,000 people each year through lectures, education programs, and our website, and develop innovations in nest site management and viewing that bring people closer to the world around them. Our mission is to preserve and strengthen raptor populations, to expand participation in raptor preservation, and to help foster the next generation of preservationists. Our work deepens the connection between people and the natural world, bringing benefits to both. Links to cams of many of the raptor nests that RRP manages can be found at: http://www.raptorresource.org/falcon_cams/index.html Does the Raptor Resource Project accept donations? Yes! RRP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and relies on the donations of friends. There is a donation button on the RRP home page: http://www.raptorresource.org What’s this about a PBS documentary on this nest? The Decorah eagle nest was featured in a PBS Nature series program, “American Eagle,” that premiered in November 2008. Filmed by cinematographers Robert Anderson and Neil Rettig in high-definition, the video is available on DVD and online at http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/american-eagle/video-full-episode/4349/ How can I read or participate in a forum about this RRP cam? This nest has been active for seven years; however it has blown down 4 times. Last year was no different for it blew down in August of 2010, luckily after the young eagles fledged. Our goal was to install the camera in September before any activity took place. But, high water throughout the summer and fall months stopped that idea. Water levels finally dropped and we were able to install the camera in November of 2010. The pair of eagles started to repair the nest but at the same time they began building a new nest. We were unaware of the new site until after the camera was installed. Since we were already up there, the decision to sturdy the nest was made and a couple of 2x4s were installed. The boards would allow a sturdy platform for the nest and chances of blowing down would decrease dramatically. There are hopes that this nest may be used again. This camera is placed high in the canopy of a larger tree nearby the new nest site. On windy days you will notice movement.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/LIVE-Bald-Eagle-Nest-Camera-in-Iowa-td6067807.html","images":0},{"id":"6154661","topic":"6067807","order":5,"title":"Re: Example of LIVE Bald Eagle Nest Camera in Iowa","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-03-09T12:43:19.249000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"This Iowa nest camera web site is now regularly getting over 8000 viewers at one time. Outlook has an option to format as plain text, which I always forget to click. I noticed that the nest is visible at night (I kept an eye on it until 11 pm) and hope that the light being used isn't detrimental to the eagles. It was interesting to see only one eagle (female?) on the nest at night. Wonder where the other sleeps? It didn't seem like a sound sleep, as she was repositioning about every hour and preening a little bit with her eyes closed. We noted here that our local female spent the nights on the nest, both when incubating and when brooding the eaglets. When the eaglets get as big as our local pair, both parents may roost near the nest. The male usually roost somewhere within sight range of the nest. The Iowa eagles like to roost in the open window near the peak of the big white barn over to the right of the nest. The camera sometimes pans there, and you have to look carefully even when it zooms in on the window-- look for its white head against the dark window opening, as the dark body blends with the background and the tail matches the color of the barn. As for the light being on at night, there is a powerful street light that shines right on the Pembroke Pines nest. It has not discouraged them from nesting and even raising three chicks last year. We are learning that the eagles are pretty good at adapting to disturbances, especially those nesting in urbanized areas.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/LIVE-Bald-Eagle-Nest-Camera-in-Iowa-td6067807.html","images":0},{"id":"6219041","topic":"6067807","order":11,"title":"EGGS MAY BE STARTING TO HATCH in LIVE Bald Eagle Nest Camera in Iowa","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-03-29T09:46:40.713000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"Navigate to the top of this thread if you are viewing thin in the FORUM, or if you are receiving this via e-mail, when you have time, click on this link to access the live feed from the Iowa Bald Eagle Nest Camera-- one of the eggs MAY be starting to crack. Note the behavior of the adult birds as emergence of the chick gets nearer-- it may take a day for this process to be complete. Then, the next egg should open in about 3 days if it is fertile. The 35th day of incubation of first egg will be tomorrow, so it may be right on time. Right now, the incubating adults are viewing and manipulating the eggs much more frequently. We had the Decorah Eagle Nest Camera on on the laptop in the kitchen while preparing dinner. I happened to look just as the male eagle got up from brooding the two eaglets and the remaining egg. He seemed to be cleaning stuff out of the nest, when he mistakenly picked up the older of the two chicks by its leg and tossed it to the periphery of the nest. I immediately started capturing screen shots. ( If images do not display in your e-mail, go to this web page link ) The male parent's action was entirely accidental, I'm sure. Luckily, larger branches form a sort of fence around the nest that kept the downy eaglet from falling to the ground. The male looked on helplessly as his little chick cheeped and tried unsuccessfully to climb up the wall into the nest cup. The egg and the younger eaglet are together inside the nest cup, while the other eaglet is separated from them by the wall of the nest cup, down the deep slope to the right of this image: Repeatedly, the chick failed in its attempts, sometimes falling back. Finally, the female arrived to take up brooding and incubation duties, but the eaglet was immobile, exhausted and possibly feeling the effects of exposure to the cold: At first, she seemed oblivious to the plight of the eaglet. As they are incapable of regulating their temperature at this age, the eagle chick faced certain death from hypothermia if it did not quickly return to the shelter of its mother's wings: The female parent started nibbling on the edge of the nest cup, as if trying to clear a path, then reached out and gently rolled the chick up the incline and into the nest cup: After warming up a bit, the eaglet begged vigorously and was fed: Both chicks had a tug of war over one chunk of meat: Now see the mother eagle's rescue in real time See more videos from Eagle Cam Fan","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/LIVE-Bald-Eagle-Nest-Camera-in-Iowa-td6067807.html","images":7}]
