Judging by the deep gape it probably was Jewel. She was flying from north to south in the direction of the large lake in Sunset Lakes, Miramar. I visited the nest at 10:15 AM today (NOV 20). No eagles were present at nest or in the usual rooting areas. No sign that the nest had been repaired in any manner.* Luis texted at 12:20 PM today (NOV 20) while watching the nest. Both adult were present. Female was on the nest and the male had just flown in to roost on the middle branch just above the nest. No report of nest building. *A light morph Short-tailed Hawk flew over my head as I was watching the nest. Only got photos of it flying away. There have been quite a few sightings of this winter visitor near the eagle nest. Its diet consists of small birds, almost exclusively.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/NOV-19-20-Eagles-seen-flying-and-at-nest-td7575675.html","images":4},{"id":"7574164","topic":"7574164","order":1,"title":"Bald Eagle Sighting","author":"lulu24","date":"2015-09-25T14:35:47.591000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"My husband took this picture yesterday (9/24/15) at about 4:30pm at the west end of the park that is on the NW corner of Southgate and Nob Hill. Since then a single adult has appeared at the nest but almost always confirmed to be Jewel, the female or as an unidentified adult. Two have not been seen together so far in November, so this is very concerning, along with the lack of any evidence that the nest is being restored for the present breeding season. Usually they are working on the nest in late October and certainly by the second week in November. I met Luis at the nest this morning around 9:00 AM. No eagle sightings during the hour or so that we observed the nest and known roosts. There was a dark falcon occupying the eagles' favored roost in the large pine at the SW corner of Pines & 208th. At first we thought it might be a Peregrine Falcon because it appeared quite large, certainly bigger than the pigeon-sized Merlin which often is seen near eagle nests.. Sighting conditions were not favorable. I reviewed my photos and confirmed that it was a Merlin, not a Peregrine. Sorry I had the wrong ID when folks visiting the nest were trying to get a decent look at it. Merlin: This morning at 6;30 AM, which is 10 minutes before sunrise, I saw an adult eagle flying over the west Miramar wetlands. It was quite distant but clearly following the usual route frim NW to SE taken by the eagles from the Pembroke Pines nest to the large lake in Sunset Lakes. A juvenile Bald Eagle does have a few scattered white feathers on its body, mostly on the breast, and also has white under its tail and wings (especially the \"armpits\"). Light tan and eventually white feathers begin to appear on its head and tail in its 2nd and 3rd years. During its 4th and 5th years the \"sub-adult\" bird develops more and more white on its head. Some breeding adults may have a few dark streaks on their heads and tails when they are 5 years old. The mottled appearance of the head in your photo is probably due to the effects of light and shadow on the feather edges and also the white down at the base of its contour feathers. The down can be exposed when the wind blows or the bird bends its neck.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/In-this-picture-it-looks-like-the-white-feathers-are-starting-to-grow-on-the-eaglet-s-head-or-is-it--td7573053.html","images":0},{"id":"2520645","topic":"2520645","order":1,"title":"Sunday morning 8-10:30am","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-03-23T07:53:38.789000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"It was perfect for me as all 4 eagles were present and accounted for! I believe the head (feathers) shape around the eyes and under the beak differ enough if you study several pictures to distinguish the adults from each other. Earlier I couldn’t see this sufficiently, but after reviewing more pictures I find the male’s head “thinner” in areas, and the female’s eyes deeper set with a fuller feather trim below the beak. The difference is subtle, and without having several “control” pictures to compare, I find this method of differentiation difficult. Since the birds can turn their head seemingly near 360 degrees, this method can be difficult if the bird isn’t in same / comparable position to the other. This be what it may, I believe the male arrived from the west and perched behind the female. The two birds seems to relate with each other and for about a minute before the female left. The pine needles covered their interaction activity but it appeared their beaks come close to each other. From what I’m learning about incubation and hatching, there seems no sign of little ones yet. There has been no feeding or preoccupation with anything in the nest. The adults do look down and lower their beaks when they stand up to stretch, but this only lasts for 30 seconds or so. Today I noted about 2 minutes before the male came, the female stood-up and seemed to be stretching and moved around the nest. Was it a coincidence she stood-up prior to the male arriving or did she hear him coming? Did she call for him? I can’t be sure whether she looked for him immediately before his arrival as it was difficult to see their heads and eyes. The female left to the southeast and could not be seen again after leaving the nest. These pictures are in sequence, female, female and male, then male. Note there was an instance the female was looking down in the nest and two emergency vehicles with sirens full pitch sped by, the bird looked up for a moment, noted the vehicles, and continued about activities. I included the picture of the eagle looking up (2nd picture).","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-s-Afternoon-Shift-Change-Thursday-Jan-13th-td5920604.html","images":8},{"id":"5921563","topic":"5920604","order":2,"title":"Re: Eagle's Afternoon Shift Change (Thursday, Jan 13th)","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-01-14T07:56:25.423000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"Wow, those are beautiful photos, Jim! I and perhaps others may have noticed that the bird on the nest, and older eaglets as well, seem to be aware of the impending arrival of another adult. It probably is not ESP. Their eyesight is very acute, and the nest is above most of the canopy, permitting them to see another eagle at quite a distance. Their hearing must be very good as well. They may be able to hear an incoming bird. We did not realize it at the time, but Pride, the adult male, was carrying in in a prey item: The food drop encounter lasted only a few seconds in a flurry of activity. Pride carried a large fish to the nest but the female eaglet seemed to attack him. He either dropped it or the eaglet took it from him as he retreated to a nest support branch. You can see the head of the fish just to the left of the base of the branch in front of the nest, either as it is falling into the nest or perhaps in the talons of the female eaglet. Pride is roosting immediately overhead of the frisky juvenile: The female eaglet immediately outstretched her wings to cover the prey in a defensive manner: The male eaglet flew towards the nest but turned around and continued flying out over us: He flew so close overhead that I could not fit him into my viewfinder: Then Pride flew up to the very top of a pine tree in front of the nest. A pair of Blue Jays harassed him and he finally flew off:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/June-23-Action-at-the-nest-td7575583.html","images":17},{"id":"7575005","topic":"7575005","order":1,"title":"ADULT AT NEST - EAGLET, NOT SO SURE","author":"tczig","date":"2018-04-30T14:30:25.347000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"I was at the nest today at 11:15 a.m. The adult was clearly visible sitting on a branch on top of the nest, but I didn't see the eaglet. When I got home and looked at my photographs, I THINK the eaglet was sitting on the branch below the adult, but she was blocked by a branch. A second adult flew and roosted on the horizontal limb above the nest, began calling excitedly and looking down at the nest. We do not think the female called back. Then the adult flew off to the east, only to circle behind the nest and take a roost in the dead Melaleuca grove west of the nest. A Red-shouldered Hawk was roosting just west of the nest tree. No other observers were there upon arrival, and there was a light intermittent drizzle. The female was standing watch in the usual roost in Australian Pine to east of nest tree. Note that all her tail feathers are completely white. The female had some feathers stuck on her bill as if she possibly had just been eating or feeding the young. She cleaned her beak, as we commonly see the eagles do just after eating. The male was not on nest or roosting elsewhere that we could see. After about 15 minutes it started raining quite hard. We looked up and the male had suddenly arrived on the nest, unseen. He appeared to be feeding the chick(s), but we did not actually see a prey item. Sorry about the quality of the photos, but the light was very poor. We ran to the shelter of the car, and about 5 minutes later the female flew in over our car to the nest, from the north, joining the male on the nest for about 5 minutes. It looked as if both were engaged in feeding or tending to the young. The female, on the right, appeared to have something in her mouth, but possibly it was the same or another feather plastered on her beak. The male then flew off to roost in the melaleucas. When we departed at about 10:30 the rain had let up and the female remained on the nest, mostly standing on the rim to the west and preening. Jay and Marilyn joined us and stayed on after we left. The male's brown outer right tail feather tip is clearly seen in this photo.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Friday-Feb-5-nest-open-15-minutes-td4521097.html","images":5},{"id":"4526194","topic":"4521097","order":2,"title":"Re: Friday, Feb 5 - nest open 15 minutes","author":"Jill W","date":"2010-02-06T12:49:58.208000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Well, that (the feeding) sounds encouraging. I hope Kelly is not as worried now. Thanks, Ken. It always tickles me when you, Victor and some of the others apologize for the quality of your photos when most of them are so good, I'd be thrilled to pieces if I had taken them. I was at the nest area from about 3:40 PM until a little after 6:00. Most of the time, the female was standing on the nest moving nest material and just looking around the area. At 5:20, she left the nest unattended and then returned at 5:40. I did not see her fly in, so I don't know if she brought prey. After a few minutes rearranging some sticks on the far left side of the nest, she went to the center and I think began to feed the young. She was definitely pulling on something and then dipping her head low in the nest. It did not appear she was eating any of it. I never saw the male, but he could have been at the meleleucas. All seems fine - an eagle that turned out to be the male was on the nest for most of the time. The female flew in around 1:00 with some prey, but I couldn't tell what it was. It was hard to see much clearly, with all of the wind. The female was quite busy feeding herself large pieces of meat and also offering food to the bottom of the nest. The male flew around the area, disappeared for about 10 minutes and then was seen circling the area again before flying off again. As I was leaving a red truck pulled up to the apron on the north side of Pines, in front of the maleluecas. He had a backpack on, and was walking along the grassy area on the south side of the road. We were asking him many questions about our eagle family. He had a wealth of knowledge on the subject, both professionally and from growing up on a lake in central FL where there were multiple bald eagle nests visible from his home. He said that his experience is that juveniles can remain in a nest area for over a year...based on the levels of their food sources and their ability to hunt. He described how the juveniles have to master the skill of using a tendon in their feet to \"lock\" their talons to catch and hold their prey. Tom had described seeing a juvenile on the nest doing exactly that as the watchers thought that something was stuck to its foot. He also described how some juveniles didn't take to hunting as quickly as others. The adults had to bring \"not quite dead prey\" and try to get the juveniles to finish the job by pushing them very aggressively. Needless to say...it was very interesting to hear him talk about eagle behavior in such detail. I guess that as it relates to nature it is hard to assume anything with absolute certainty. We are fortunate in having such caring experts like Brian Mealey, Lynda White, of course, you Ken, and others to advise and educate us about the best paths to follow to protect the eagles and their habitat. At that time it was possible to view it from the west, outside the Park boundary. There was a temporary warning barrier which allowed viewing from a safe distance. That entire area may now be restricted and there are plans to construct new approach lanes there, along with widening of SW 10th Street to connect Sawgrass Expy with I-95. We have a similar issue with the Pembroke Pines nest, as a public sidewalk passes about 100 feet in front of the nest. This is necessary for public safety and is considered to be an \"existing disturbance\" which, in effect, waives the 330 foot rule. However, we still discourage viewers from congregating or setting up for photos from that point because the eagles do show signs such as staring down which may indicate they are anxious. Pedestrians and cyclists who pass by are apparently tolerated as evidenced by the eagles' continued use of the same nest tree. Their customary roosting trees should also be treated with respect, even though there are no formal restrictions. The near edge of busy Pines Boulevard roadway is about 160 feet from the nest and the viewing area across the eastbound lanes is about 200 feet away. The nest may also be viewed from the north side of Pines at a range of 260 feet. The eagles seem to have adjusted to the traffic noise and sirens from emergency vehicles, although I once saw one bolt from the nest when a truck (illegally) suddenly engaged its \"jake brake\" to keep from running a red light. I am not certain about present conditions at Quiet Waters, but I believe that the mountain bike path is an \"existing disturbance,\" meaning that bikers have been passing by without any adverse effect upon the eagles. Perhaps if viewers linger or gather at some point along or near the bike trail, they may disturb the eagles, as has sometimes happened with the Pembroke Pines sidewalk. I suggest you talk to Park personnel about the problem with the signs and also obtain advice about acceptable viewing sites.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-Watchers-are-approaching-too-close-to-the-Quiet-Waters-nest-td7574674.html","images":0},{"id":"7574677","topic":"7574674","order":4,"title":"Re: Eagle Watchers are approaching too close to the Quiet Waters nest","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2017-01-27T08:09:16.704000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hello Ken, Thank you for responding and educating me and everyone else on these rules and conditions. I noticed that for a few of the feedings the adult would bring the food to the nest and then leave quicker than I have noticed before. The eaglets would then seem to pull and tear at the food like the adults do. Both young were seen doing this. I don't know whether this means the food brought was very small or it is part of their maturation process, or none of the above. Finally about 11:30 1 adult stood on the nest rim and the eaglets were not visible (maybe exhausted after their busy morning feeding and excercising?) They remained in this mode as I left at noon.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Fri-a-m-at-the-nest-td2397576.html","images":0},{"id":"2400977","topic":"2397576","order":2,"title":"Re: Fri. a.m. at the nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-02-28T10:05:33.242000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"This is very reassuring, as the younger chick seemed less active the past few days, and was either smaller than expected for his age, or staying lower in the nest than its sibling.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Fri-a-m-at-the-nest-td2397576.html","images":0},{"id":"7573172","topic":"7573172","order":1,"title":"Nov 11","author":"Liza","date":"2013-11-11T14:46:41.384000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"CONTENTS DELETED The author has deleted this message.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nov-11-td7573172.html","images":0},{"id":"7573173","topic":"7573172","order":2,"title":"Re: Nov 11","author":"Liza","date":"2013-11-11T14:50:35.418000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nov-11-td7573172.html","images":1},{"id":"7573174","topic":"7573172","order":3,"title":"Re: Nov 11","author":"Liza","date":"2013-11-11T14:52:05.942000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nov-11-td7573172.html","images":1},{"id":"7573175","topic":"7573172","order":4,"title":"Re: Nov 11","author":"Liza","date":"2013-11-11T14:56:15.786000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"I was able to observe both Pride and Joy this morning,.. they sure were busy building up the nest as they kept bringing in twigs more than usual . Going westbound on Pines, as we approached the light at SW 208th we could see both eagles perched out on a limb of the dead tree just SW of the corner. They were in plain sight of the road. Other motorists were stopping and pointing as well. We parked near 209th and I hurried up to get photos of the pair. The male, on the right, is noticeably smaller than the female-- it is easy to tell when they are next to each other. Also note that he has of a forehead than the female-- the top of his bill is almost in line with the top of his head. Al joined me shortly after we arrived. As we watched, an interesting thing happened. Eagles, like other raptors, must spit out pellets that contain undigested prey remains, such as feather shafts, beaks, fur, teeth and claws. The male started retching and I expected him to expel a pellet. Instead, he regurgitated a long stream of white mucoid liquid! This is very interesting reading. According to the report, during the next 50 years, Florida's Bald Eagles are projected to lose 1.9 million acres of habitat. \"Bald eagles have done so well in recent years, they have been removed from the endangered list. But if the state’s human population doubles, eagles could lose ground. That’s because only 40 percent of Florida’s 1,248 bald eagle nests are on protected public lands. Smart growth strategies can help protect eagles and other Florida wildlife.\" Eagles that seek out urban nest sites are pioneers, re-establishing populations in areas where they have been extinct for years. We feel a duty to prevent the recurrence of local extinction. The City of Pembroke Pines has been very cooperative in furthering that goal. Although we are unhappy with some of the parking and viewing restrictions, important steps have been taken to protect our local pair from disturbance.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/What-s-at-Stake-2060-td4190940.html","images":0},{"id":"7574540","topic":"7574540","order":1,"title":"Everyone at nest today","author":"johnnye","date":"2016-06-22T21:11:01.571000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Great day today. Lived in Boca Raton for almost 34 years (now in Cary, NC). Great to see the eagles and Ospreys make the big comeback. Tad Einloth In a message dated 4/14/2013 5:14:00 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [hidden email] writes: One of my projects has been keeping watch over a Bald Eagle nest in neighboring Pembroke Pines. Over five breeding seasons, since 2008, I have collected information about their breeding activities. Dozens of other nest watchers who have an interest in protecting their habitat and learning about the eagles' behavior contribute their ground observations to my Pembroke Pines Eagle Nest Watch FORUM , and I compile the data to obtain a broader picture of their breeding biology. Here is a spreadsheet and a table comparing milestone events in each breeding cycle. Watching an eagle at its nest can be like watching grass grow. Yet, sometimes subtle behavioral changes can signal important events, such as the laying of the first egg and its hatching. Although our attention may be focused on the eagle, we are not oblivious to other happenings. Once a hummingbird appeared at the nest and perched right in front of an eagle as it was incubating. It was so interesting to ponder the difference in size between these two extremes that I totally forgot that I had a camera! Another time, an Osprey angrily followed an eagle that was carrying a fish to the nest site. Undoubtedly, the eagle had stolen its meal. Rather than flying directly to the nest, the eagle circled and flew off out of sight, emerging a few minutes later with the fish but without the Osprey. However, I was lucky enough to capture some unexpected scenes. Most recently was an encounter between several Fish Crows and a Merlin, just one day after the single eaglet had fledged and disappeared. The crows were harassing one of the adult eagles as it was roosting near the nest. I interpreted this a a possible attempt to distract the eagle so that others of the flock could steal remains of prey that the adult had left in the nest to attract the missing youngster. The crows repeatedly dived down just over the eagle's head whenever the eagle was occupied with preening. The eagle seemed only mildly disturbed. Just after I photographed one of the crows there was a rush of wings from behind me. A Merlin was in full pursuit of the crow. I must apologize for the poor quality of my photos as the light was harsh and I did not have time to switch my shutter settings. The crow headed for the Merlin's favorite roosting place, but had to yield its perch under attack. The crow actually started out after the Merlin! The battle went on for several minutes, the crow intent on returning to the falcon's favored roost. Finally the crows relented and the Merlin settled down. A couple of days before, a Cattle Egret stole my attention as it chased after Halloween Pennant dragonflies. The egret stealthily crept up on an insect (Click on the image to see the location of its prey). Success! (Note that the egret has pinkish-orange breeding plumes). Other incidental sightings of note include this Swallow-tailed Kite that passed directly over the eagle nest. A pair of Red-shouldered Hawks courted on a tall light fixture nearby. A dark morph Short-tailed Hawk, ready to pounce upon any unsuspecting smaller bird disguised itself by soaring in a flock of vultures. A Sharp-shinned Hawk raced overhead. A flock of Cedar Waxwings once appeared against a rainy sky. A Palm Warbler visited as I watched the nest, up close and personal. Flocks of long-legged waders, such as these Wood Storks, flew overhead. A colony of Monk Parakeets occupied a nest on a light pole across the street from the nest. An oddity was this Northern Mockingbird with a badly deformed bill. It was singing vigorously as I took its picture. A Gray Squirrel tight-roped across in front of the eagle nest. Some of the sightings must be classified as \"un-natural.\" If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below: http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/Finding-other-birds-while-watching-the-eagle-nest-tp7573039.html To unsubscribe from Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida, click here . It was very cloudy and foggy. Since today marks the presumed 35th day of incubation and is the estimated hatch date, we wanted to see if there were any behavioral changes that might suggest that an egg has hatched. The male was roosting in the melaleucas to the west the entire time. He was farther away than usual, but after about [specific street address withheld]. Despite the poor light and fog, I was able to confirm that it was the male by photographing his brown-tipped right outer tail feather: The female was on the nest the entire time, usually sitting far down. She was actually out of sight for the first 5 minutes after we arrived, and we thought she was not there. At first, she faced to the right: At about 8:20, she stood up on the left edge of the nest, facing away toward the south, and flapped her wings a few times: She then went back to the center of the nest and gradually settled down, facing away from us: I would conclude that the first egg has not yet hatched, as there was no unusual behavior, and the female was sitting down very low in the nest. A small flock of Cedar Waxwings flew into one of the trees along the power lines just to the left of the nest. This is a black and white rendition. Of interest, a flock of about 25-30 waxwings flew over the nest on January 19th. I had to identify them by size, flight pattern and shape. The light was so poor that only a bit of color can be seen. This is a cropped view of one Cedar Waxwing:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Friday-Jan-22-Still-incubating-8-AM-td4440781.html","images":6},{"id":"4680673","topic":"4680673","order":1,"title":"Video: Fly Like an Eagle!
