Eagles are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which makes it illegal to wound, kill or capture the birds. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources put out a bulletin in mid-March saying conservation officers were seeking the public's help in catching the people who killed an eagle in southwest Davis County. An eagle was shot from a gravel road while it was feeding on the carcass of a deer. A second eagle was shot and killed while feeding on a deer carcass and two others were shot and killed while in cottonwood trees, said Bob Stuchel, a state conservation officer. While conservation officers were investigating the eagle shootings, they kept receiving reports of rotting deer carcasses. Diane Porter of Fairfield, who helps maintain the Web site Birdwatching.com, said it's hard to understand why anyone would kill an eagle. \"It's an abomination,\" she said. Conservation officers haven't come up with a motive either, unless the shootings were for entertainment. \"I think they just went around and shot whatever was there,\" Stuchel said. \"I don't think there was a reason. They just wanted to shoot them. When they came back and eagles were feeding on the deer carcasses, they shot them too.\" He said most of the eagles were shot from the road, probably from a vehicle. No arrests have been made, but Stuchel said officials are still receiving names of potential suspects. \"These are the type of cases where we really rely on the public,\" said Kevin Baskins, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. \"We can put a lot of it together, but sometimes it's that last piece that makes a case.\" A person found guilty of killing a bald eagle faces up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000 for a first offense. A second offense is a felony.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Roadside-killings-of-bald-eagles-baffle-many-td4912659.html","images":0},{"id":"7573650","topic":"7573650","order":1,"title":"No eagles at nest OCT 31 between 10:15-10:45 AM","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-10-31T13:54:16.465000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"I watched for a half hour and saw no hint of an eagle on the nest, and none were in the vicinity of the nest tree or usual roosts. The female (Jewel) was roosting on the right nest support branch over the next 3/4 hour we occasionally caught sight of one eaglet. A day earlier we had seen two eaglets, the first hatched being the 21st offspring from this nest. The first eaglet from this nest fledged in 2008. Usually (about 3:1) the first eaglet is a female. We will call her P Piney 21. Loose branches on the nest rim made it difficult to focus on the eaglet, so my photos are not very sharp. At about 10:15 Phil had to leave, but said he was sure that there would be some action as soon as he was gone. We laughed and I decided to keep looking. After only a few minutes, at 10:18 AM, just as I was ready to depart, Jewel suddenly seemed agitated and kept looking up to the right (west). I am sure she heard something, although it was a few seconds before I heard the screams of her mate (Pride) and the calls of another bird which briefly roosted above the nest. Pride, still exchanging loud calls with the intruder, also seemed to have landed out of sight behind the nest. I thought it might have been another eagle, but its calls were different. I saw that it was an Osprey! Jewel immediately flew down and covered the nest as Pride flew off out of sight back to the west, either pursuing or being followed by the Osprey. Seven minutes later, at 10:25 AM, Pride landed from the right of the nest with a prey item which I could not identify but am almost certain it was a fish that he stole from the Osprey, which was now nowhere to be seen or heard. Jewel then flew off to roost, as Pride occupied the nest and began to tear at the prey as the eaglet watched intently: Finally, Pride tore off a morsel for the eaglet... ...which she accepted eagerly: Feeding was still going on when I left at 10:40. It is possible that the smaller eaglet was hiding and waiting its turn to be fed-- let's hope so. At 7:15 this morning, about 12 minutes after sunrise, a sub-adult (early 5th year) Bald Eagle flew due east to a dead pine near the corner of SW 196th Avenue and the Pembroke Road right-of-way.This was about 1/3 mile north of my location, which is about 1 1/2 miles SE of the Pembroke Pines eagle nest. In less than a minute it took flight in a line slightly east of due south, in the direction of the large lake in Sunset Lakes. It flew past me to the east about 200 yards away. The light was poor but I believe its markings resemble \"Newfee\" rather than the younger immature bird that has also been photographed near the nest. Such a camera would require funding and acquisition of dedicated bandwidth. We understand that electrical power may be available from a box only about 150 feet from the nest. If funding were obtained and local permissions were granted, a formal application must be processed. FWC requires application for an eagle nest cam to be made 90 days before intended installation, if it is placed within the 330 foot buffer zone around the nest. Osprey Cam at St. Andrews Links in Dunedin, Florida (Click here for Live View) : Of course, a camera view is no substitute for the real thing, but it can provide valuable information about the welfare and habits of the birds. Interestingly, this Osprey cam has just begun operating at a nest in Pinellas County. You might wish to check out the Osprey cam Web site at this link and click on “Live Camera.” Other links describe a project to involve 4th and 5th grade students: Participation in monitoring an Osprey nest is intended to accomplish three things. 1) To get children in the habit of observing the wildlife around them on a regular basis, 2) To create an interest in and to teach ‘citizen science’ methods of observations and collecting data and 3) To instill in children a sense of the value of volunteerism, particularly as it relates to the environment. Participating 4th and 5th grade classes will receive Citizen Scientist booklets to record their observation data. For enrichment children are encouraged to visit Honeymoon Island Nature Center and the Osprey Trail at Honeymoon Island. Data will be summarized and posted before the end of the school year. The students will track the following pair/nest events: * Nest Building * Mating * Egg laying * Incubation * Hatching * Fledging * Departure While FDOT regards the new restrictions as the only safe and practical response to the traffic hazards, they will be an added inconvenience for those who come to the nest site to see the eagles. Our hope that the public will have a safe vantage point during this and the next eagle nesting season is fading fast. As much as we have enjoyed the close views from the south side of Pines Boulevard, and so many have accepted the risks of standing next to a busy highway to obtain those views, we have no inherent right to them. We do not “own” the eagles, and public safety cannot take a back seat to our desire to get close to them. If sufficient resources, such as corporate sponsorship might be obtained, there is the possibility that a remote camera could be mounted with a clear view of the nest. Connected to the Internet, such an “Eagle Cam” would allow everyone to “own” great views of the family life of these great birds. The Dunedin Links Osprey Cam provides us with an excellent example of the educational value of a nest camera. I invite you to provide us with suggestions as to methods and possible resources.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/A-Model-for-an-EagleNest-Camera-td3856295.html","images":1},{"id":"7574282","topic":"7574282","order":1,"title":"Saturday Morning 12-19-2015","author":"LuisEagles","date":"2015-12-20T08:04:36.849000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"This is a close up.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Saturday-Morning-12-19-2015-td7574282.html","images":1},{"id":"7574776","topic":"7574776","order":1,"title":"Bald Eagle Adopts Baby Hawk Instead of Eating Him","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2017-06-26T06:47:44.664000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Bald Eagle Adopts Baby Hawk Instead of Eating Him http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/bald-eagle-adopts-baby-hawk-instead-of-eating-him/ In the wild, bald eagles and red-tailed hawks are natural-born enemies, frequently fighting each other to the death – with larger bald eagles typically winning those bloody battles. That’s why it’s so amazing that instead of serving her offspring a 4-week-old red-tailed hawk she may have snatched, a bald eagle in British Columbia has literally taken the young bird under her wing, raising it alongside her three eaglets. A raptor expert says this is extremely rare in nature. Why was the hawklet’s life spared? One theory is that the mother bald eagle’s hormonal urge to kill it was overwhelmed by her hormonal urge to feed it when the hungry hawklet started squawking for food. “What probably happened in this case is that when they brought this little guy back, he probably begged for food, as he would do, not even realizing the danger it was in,” Dr. David Bird (yep, that’s his real name) told CTV News... When I arrived at 9:05 AM. No eagles were present on or around the nest. The FPL equipment was staged on the other side of Pines Boulevard on the shoulder of the westbound lanes. Mark, the environmental specialist assigned to monitor the nest, had been there since 6:45 AM when it was still very dark. When the light improved he saw both eagles on the nest. He said that one flew off but the other stayed on the nest until a little before 9:00 AM. The equipment was not moved near the nest until around 9:15 when a worker was raised in in a hydraulic crane with a work platform (\"cherry picker\") to inspect the transformer on the utility pole in front of the nest. He replaced a small piece of equipment (I think some kind of fuse) and then checked the transformer. The problem was corrected without using heavy equipment which would have been needed to replace the transformer. The operation took only about a quarter of an hour. The eagles never showed up until after all the equipment and workers drove away before 10:00 AM. I stayed on with Mark, hoping the eagles might return to the nest. One adult did finally appear from the SW at 10:15 AM and swooped low but bypassed the nest area to disappear towards the NE. It certainly showed no signs of distress. It may have been the male (Pride) as it appeared a bit small and its body tapered to the rear as opposed to the \"big belly\" shape of the female (Jewel). I finally departed at about 10:35 AM. I think that the eagles often begin foraging after sunrise, as we often see them during our daily walks in the wetlands to the SE. Yesterday one flew over at 8:15 AM and two days before I saw one there at 7:30 AM and probably the same one at 8:00 AM. This has been the pattern over the years. Until the female gets broody and lays the eggs we might expect one or both adults to be away from the nest in the morning. We have found late morning to be a better time to find both on the nest during this part of the breeding cycle. It is safe to say that this necessary repair was completed without any intereactiion with the eagles. I shot this yesterday just south of the entrance of Chekika State Recreational Park in the Everglades National Park. I was driving on the abandoned road in front of the park and noticed this hawk intensely eyeballing its next meal. It took roughly 10-12 minutes for it to make up its mind as to when to strike. During the wait, though, you can see it twitching occasionally, as if unsure of its decision. Finally, it swooped down into some tall grass by a tree and waited there for about 30 seconds, while positioning itself onto its dinner. When it had a firm grasp on its prey, it flew up with it and narrowly missed the tree, which is when I was able to capture this image. After getting home and seeing this image on the computer, the thing I noticed about this hawk is how intelligent it is. Take a look at its feet and see how it has positioned the rat. It is parallel to the hawk's body, so that when it flies, it experiences less wind resistance. You have to love mother nature! Enjoy the pic, folks!!! At 4, an adult flew in with food and then both chicks were up and eating. The adult stayed on the nest for only 5 minutes. The chicks continued to eat for quite a while. At 4:10, a lady asked me for permission to take a picture of the nest I bungie corded a tripod with the spotting scope to the \"no parking\" sign because I knew that there would be many young people there today and I wouldn't be able to protect both my camera and the scope tripods from being tripped on or bumped into resulting in equipment falling to the ground. I had a step ladder for the short children and adults to be able to see through the scope. Except for having to refocus the scope frequently (seems it's just instinct for people to want to grab and pull at the scope at first), it worked out very well. There was another feeding at 5:35, and again, the adult did not stay on the nest for more than 5 minutes. My pictures turned out much better today and I don't have a clue why. The only thing I can think of is that I wear a contact lens in my right eye only. My left eye does the close-up work like reading the phone book. Thanks so much Ken, for making this possible! I would now like to take advantage of this forum, and the passion of the public that uses it, to assist my students with collecting data on these eagles. At the top of this page is a link to download an observational checklist that was created by my students at Silver Trail Middle School. Our intention is to collect data about the affect of traffic on the adult eagles' proximity to the nest. Unfortunately, with the current status of limited viewing areas, we anticipate difficulty in getting students out to the nest to make the observations. Our hope is that the viewing public will be able to download checklists and fill them out whenever they visit the site. The checklists are designed to record 30 minutes worth of observations, and can be scanned and emailed to me when completed, or dropped off at Silver Trail Middle School, located at the corner of 184th Ave and Sheridan Street. My email address is Kelly.Smith@browardschools.com. Last year we completed a similar study. Although we did not have the number of observations that we had hoped for, we were able to analyze over 60 hours of data. It was an exciting and stimulating opportunity for my students to work with \"real data\" as they reinforced their skills of using the scientific method. Additionally, it made a huge impact on their respect for wildlife and taught them that we all need to become stewards of our wild neighbors. Our results were surprising. We found that instead of frightening off the adults, as we had predicted, it appeared that the greater the traffic, the closer the eagles seemed to be located to the nest. The students inferred that perhaps the eagles were staying near by the nest during times of high traffic due to concern for the offspring. This year, we are adding some interesting aspects to the checklist. In speaking with Brian Mealey, our local Bald Eagle \"guru\", he indicated that the ability to record contact with, or \"near-misses\" with the power lines that are so close to the nest, would provide valuable information. We have included this aspect into this year's checklist. In addition, we added opportunities to record any similar contact with automobiles, another common hazard to the survival rate of young eagles. With the public's help, my students hope to accumulate enough data regarding this year's breeding season, that we can analyze important information about the affect of human activities on these unique birds. All of the data that we collect during this study will also be forwarded to Lynda White, coordinator of Audubon's Eagle Watch Program. If you would like to help collect data for us, you can assist in creating a permanent record of the progress of these eagles. So how about it? If you would like to help us with this valuable project, simply download a few copies of the checklist to carry in the car with you. When ever you have a chance to stop by the nest, check off the appropriate information while you are there. Then, you can either scan and email the checklist to me, or drop it by the school. The kids and I would greatly appreciate the help! Thank you! They were reported hanging from a pine tree off a road in Tuckerton, NJ by some local residents. We didn’t know how long they were there, but we knew that we needed to respond quickly if a bird had a chance to survive. We arrived at the scene to find two adults that were indeed, hanging from a tree. Luckily the local residents on the scene knew someone who worked for AC Electric (he also lived on the same road the birds were off of) and had a truck with a cherry picker on it. After the cherry picker arrived I went up to free the two birds. One eagle was alive and one had unfortunately died. The two were likely engaged in a territorial dispute and fell to where they hung on that skinny tree branch. Eagles are extremely territorial to their nest sites and even fight over food when it is scarce. Eagles also often lock feet while performing courtship displays, but this was certainly NOT a courtship display. Each had a foot that was totally locked with the other. The dead eagle had it’s “death grip” on the surviving eagle and if no one saw these birds then both would have died. After assessing the situation I realized I needed some kind of a pole or hand saw to cut a branch to slide the dead birds leg off the branch, which would free both birds. I called down to the local residents who gathered below and asked if any had a saw. One did, so I went back down, grabbed the saw and proceeded back up to cut the branch and free the hanging eagles. After bringing the birds down to the ground, watch as it took three grown men to pry their feet apart... And sometimes, mating season also means fighting season. A wildlife rescuer with Conserve Wildlife NJ pulled down a pair of bald eagles who had locked talons and gotten stuck in a tree in Tuckerton yesterday, but not before one of the eagles had already died from his injuries, according to a post on the organization's web site. The surviving eagle is \"alive, alert and standing\" at the Mercer County Wildlife Center, according to the blog post written by Ben Wurst, a habitat program manager with Conserve Wildlife NJ who performed the treetop rescue from a hastily mustered cherry picker. Wurst managed to capture his efforts with a video camera apparently attached to his helmet, providing a dramatic glimpse into both the world of the wildlife rescuer and a puzzling aspect of eagle behavior. He credits local residents with alerting authorities to the eagles and helping with the rescue. \"A lesson I've learned in my short career working with endangered wildlife in New Jersey is that you always need to be prepared for the unexpected,\" Wurst wrote. \"You never know what tomorrow brings.\" The non-profit CWF recently released a report showing more than 200 bald eagles were born in the state last year as the species continues its steady recovery from near elimination in the state. (The adult was facing somewhat towards me so the tail feathers were not really in full view.) The shape of the adult was puffier, more rounded also. I went to see the nest and it appeared empty. I tried different locations all along the median and when I went left of the nest where there was a very small view of only the far left corner of the nest a white head popped up....facing due east. The cold front had worked its magic. The last two days of heavy clouds, intermittent showers and increasing winds had made it unwise for us to venture very far out into the wetlands next to our home. This morning we were out about 10 minutes before dawn. The sky was already blue, with the light reflecting white off the scattered cirrus clouds and a waning moon. shining brightly. The temperature had dropped to the high 40s (~9 degrees C) and the northwest wind was barely perceptible. By Illinois standards it was shirt-sleeve weather. A light jacket sufficed for me, but Mary Lou was layered in fleece and had her hands in her jacket pockets as we walked the gravel road. She always says that she was born in December and hasn't thawed out yet! As usual, Mary Lou's faster pace moved her several yards ahead of me. At 6:55 AM, one minute before sunrise, a Bald Eagle suddenly flew low almost directly over her head. I quickly raised my camera and immediately learned that I had forgotten to turn it on! By the time it was operational the eagle had almost disappeared behind the trees. All but one of my series of shots missed the mark, but a single clipped-wing image provided evidence that it was an early fifth year bird, almost certainly the new companion of the male who lost his mate about a month previously. Their nest is about 1 1/2 miles to the NW of this location. By the time we reached the Harbour Lake water conservation area we were still shrouded in shadows but the sun had reached the treetops across the lake. In the distance, I nearly ignored a large bird flying eastward, thinking it to be a heron. To be sure I used my camera as a spotting scope and saw that it was an eagle. I was able to snap only two shots before it disappeared behind a grove of trees. Using Google Earth, my best approximation of its range was 0.45 miles (730 meters), so the photo had poor resolution. Back home, the view on the computer screen revealed it to be an adult Bald Eagle with one leg dangling down. This photo was taken at 07:19:57 and is cropped and sharpened: This next photo is stamped two seconds later. With this one I modified the color temperature and increased the dynamic range as well as strengthened the sharpening in an effort to better visualize the eagle's legs: I walked to the north, closer to where the eagle had disappeared, but only two minutes later (at 07:22:39 AM) the same adult eagle with a dangling leg once again flew into view, this time flying to the WSW, at a range of approximately 0.19 mile (303 meters). The time stamp for this photo is 07:22:59 AM): This is the sharpest of a burst of photos I took as the eagle flew away from my position (time stamp 07:23:01 heavily cropped). It shows that the right leg is the one hanging down. The eagle disappeared into the distance, flying WSW towards the Everglades. I wandered northward to the wet prairie, where I captured a delightful view of a Great Egret foraging in the slough: A Great Blue Heron flew in... ...and settled on a snag at the northern end of the prairie: While I was enjoying the herons an Osprey flew by and oddly seemed more intent on what was behind him than looking where he was going: I looked there as well and to my utmost surprise saw two large dark birds in a dead melaleuca tree about 0.2 mile (320 meters) away. They had flown in while I was busy with the heron, and were adult Bald Eagles! The one on the right was noticeably larger, a female: The eagles were at least 0.2 miles (320 meters) distant, and the shadows of the branches partially obscured their features. I was particularly interested in determining whether the female was the new companion of our resident male, but this photo seems to show the tail of an adult bird: Closely cropped views of the female's tail... ...and head... ...revealed none of the distinctive dark marks shown by the younger female. Here is a photo of the new female's tail that I took this past week: The original female (named \"Joy\") was last documented at the nest on October 30. On November 7th an apparent female roosted near the nest as darkness set in, but the image showed her right leg hanging down with the talons possibly distorted. Although the reason for the original female's disappearance is unknown, it is possible that she had suffered an injury. Earlier this year the nest observers noted that she often dangled one of her legs. I captured this image of her on January 11, 2014: So, the mystery deepens. Were my photos simply not sharp enough to determine the age of this female that was with the male today? Is Joy still alive and in the area of the nest? Is it possible that the new female drove her away?","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-10-A-two-or-three-eagle-morning-BLOG-td7573798.html","images":18},{"id":"7573799","topic":"7573798","order":2,"title":"Re: DEC 10: A two (or three?) eagle morning [BLOG]","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2014-12-10T14:55:45.774000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"That was some walk, Ken!
