We have good news to report. Here is a note from the Florida Audubon EagleWatch Program Manager with my reply.: Hi Ken, I just got off the phone with David Niebch with Florida Power and Light. I guess 10 street lights have been out since Irma along Pines Blvd near nest BO002. They have traced the problem to the transformer, which is about 100 feet from the nest. They are aware that the nest is active and are hopeful that the issue is a switch in the transformer, which will take about 30 min to replace. Worst case scenario, the transformer may need repair which would take 1.5 hrs max. David and FPl are great advocates for eagles and discussed every option with the city to fix this without actually having to work near the nest. But it has become a safety issue for the city and this is the only way to fix the problem. So David had a conversation with USFWS about the work and USFWS approved the work as long as they schedule it as quickly as possible, do the work in a short amount of time and hire a monitor to watch the nest during the work. As mentioned, their hope is the work will take 30 minutes. The current plan is to do the work this Wednesday morning. The monitor hired by FPL will be on site before sunrise to keep an eye on the eagles. FPL will have all of their equipment and the plan ready before they get on site so they will be there as little time as possible. Tentatively they are hoping to start work around 9:00am. I know a number of people keep an eye on this nest and report through your blog, so I wanted to let you know about the planned work in case you want to make others aware of it so no one calls FWC by mistake that morning. Again, the work has been approved by US Fish and Wildlife and should be done within a couple of hours max. David Niebch said to feel free to call him if you need to: [phone withheld]. Thanks! Shawnlei Breeding Audubon EagleWatch Program Manager [specific street address withheld] Maitland, FL 32751 [phone withheld], x118 = = = = = = = = = = = My Reply: Hi, Shawnlei-- Indeed, FPL has been tremendously supportive of efforts to protect the eagle nest. Even though the female is relatively new to the location, I have seen that she is quite tolerant of disturbances such as motorcycles, sirens and landscapers. FPL has also installed protective insulators and \"Curley-Ques\" (spiral inserts) on the power lines to avert avian collisions. I know they will act responsibly and promote public safety. Some of my neighbors who have complained about the delay in correction of the street light outage will be pleased to hear that FPL is addressing its responsibility to customers as well as to this iconic species. They are known to be nesting on the Mooseheart school compound, but I did not know the location of the nest and assumed it was hidden by trees on the property, which is posted. On a brief bird walk in Hawk's Bluff Park, about 4 doors from their home I happened to look across Randall Road and saw a lone adult Bald Eagle roosting by the nest. It was joined about 15 minutes later by a second adult. No food was brought in, and I did not see any chicks. Judging by the behavior of the parents, which appear to be roosting quite nearby, but are not brooding, they must still be rather young, but capable of thermoregulation-- maybe two weeks old or less. They are about 75-100 yards on the other side of a busy 4-lane highway (sound familiar?) with lots more traffic all day than Pines Boulevard. I approached to the shoulder of the highway, maybe about 300 yards away, so my photos are of poor quality. Kelly Smith has seen it at the lighthouse as well. It would be interesting to find out whether and where it nested. That location is about 2 1/2 miles away from the Pembroke Pines nest, not a great distance for an eagle, but a bit outside the 1-2 mile radius that they usually consider their own territory. The next nearer known nest is at a greater distance to the southeast. I often walk the levee of the 196th Avenue canal just west of the lake, and so far have not seen any eagles overhead, as I might expect if they were the PP birds foraging in your lake and carrying prey to their nest.. I also live in Sunset Lakes, Monaco Cove, to your north, and have seen eagles carrying prey towards the PP nest, about 2 miles to the NW of our home. The adults are still bringing food to the PP nest, even though the eaglets are now flying freely. Please try to see if they carry prey in any particular direction, and if so, let us know. Keep a watch out for juvenile eagles, which are all black, and try to get a photo, if you can. Next nesting season, in November, we should really try to discover the location of their nest, as there could be an unregistered one in your vicinity. Thanks so much! This nest is the first active eagle nest known to have been established in Broward County since DDT was abolished in the 1970s. The existence of this nest was publicized by local media, and has attracted much attention from the general public. Since the nest is located only about [specific street address withheld] (State Highway 820), it may be readily viewed from the grassy swale that borders the south shoulder of the 20800 block of the highway. Earlier this year, local officials as well as FDOT became aware of certain hazards posed by the large number of observers who congregated along the side of the roadway, especially during the months of January through May, when young eagles were present in the nest. At various times, especially on weekends, over 50 vehicles and more than 100 spectators gathered there at one time. Since most observers spent only a limited time at the site, there was much turnover. Traffic and crowd control measures were implemented. FDOT placed “No Parking” signs along that stretch of roadway, in an attempt to eliminate the collision hazard posed by vehicles stopping to park and re-enter the highway. The City erected a fence around the property with “No Trespassing” signs, and placed pylons along the entire block about 30 feet from the roadway, to further discourage vehicular traffic and keep pedestrians from approaching too close to the nest. In an effort to educate the public and also to help maintain order during times of peak visitor traffic, a cadre of local citizens assembled as an ad hoc eagle watching group. Several of these lay citizens now serve on the Mayor’s Steering Committee. At the July 20 meeting, they related some experiences that raise very serious public safety and liability concerns. Unauthorized parking continued even after the FDOT erected signs. This was often innocent, as the signs faced the roadway rather than oncoming traffic. Many drivers failed to see the signs until they were pointed out by the volunteers or other observers. There were several “near misses” due to vehicles slowing down (whether to park or inquire about the reason for the presence of the crowds), but no collisions were observed. Speeders and other drivers distracted by the presence of the observers, or possibly by cell phones, sometimes did not reduce speed, or veered out of lanes and caused near-collisions. The lack of parking spaces near the nest led some motorists to park in traffic lanes, such as the westbound right and left turn lanes at 209th Avenue. Most seriously, pedestrians stood too close to the paved roadway. Looking at the nest through binoculars and cameras, they sometimes backed up onto the pavement. Small children were seen to actually venture into the traffic lane while their parents were inattentive or distracted. Thankfully, there have been no reports of pedestrian accidents, but this situation creates an urgent and abiding concern to members of the Steering Committee. We believe that the modest cost of providing safety measures pales in comparison to the liability that may be associated with a single serious injury or fatality. Since the eagles instinctively return to the same territory each winter to begin the breeding cycle, and normally re-use the same nest, this scenario, with its associated hazards, is be expected to be repeated in future years. We believe that Florida Department of Transportation has an interest in, and responsibility to assure the safety of, pedestrians who view the eagle nest from FDOT property along the south side of the [specific street address withheld]. We request that FDOT implement additional measures to reduce public liability for any injuries or deaths that may result from failure to act before the return of crowds of eagle observers in January, 2010. Members of the Committee recommended, in priority order, that Doug Young, chair of the Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee bring these concerns to the attention of FDOT, with a request that the agency consider taking the following measures: 1. Place a temporary hard barrier along the south (eastbound) side of the highway, to create a soft breakdown lane on the right shoulder, and also to separate pedestrians from vehicular traffic. Since there are several nest vantage points along the roadway, the barrier should be at least 100 to 150 feet long. FDOT engineers could determine construction, whether plastic water-filled, or concrete “Jersey Barriers.” Observers would be limited to the south side of the barrier, away from vehicular traffic. 2. Improve “No Parking” signage so that the signs face oncoming traffic. 3. Add temporary warning traffic signs recommending that motorists exercise caution and reduce speed along that stretch of roadway during the months of January through May. 4. Develop, in cooperation with the City of Pembroke Pines, durable temporary signs that instruct pedestrian observers to utilize crosswalks at signal lights (at corners of 209th and 208th Avenues) and provide additional information to increase observer safety, such as staying off the shoulder or roadway, controlling children and pets, not littering, (etc). 5. Consider construction of a pedestrian sidewalk on the south side of the block, in view of the increased pedestrian traffic at all times of the year (due not only to the eagle nest, but also the new High School and the recently-installed traffic signals at 209th Avenue that provide additional protected access to the bus stop at the SE corner of 208th Avenue). 6. While parking concerns are mainly within the purview of local authorities, FDOT may be offer some advice and assistance to the City.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagle-Sanctuary-Steering-Commitee-members-raise-concerns-about-safety-of-nest-observers-td3337385.html","images":0},{"id":"3338065","topic":"3337385","order":2,"title":"Re: Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Commitee members raise concerns about safety of nest observers","author":"Rosyfinch","date":"2009-07-27T23:10:40.451000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Barbara Walker asked: Is there an appropriate spot for an observation tower? If feasible, a viewing area to the south or west, especially if raised, could be ideal. And you are right about the need for careful study and review of any plans, not to mention the need to obtain funding sources. The Steering Committee will work to specify the needs and explore funding sources, but only after a site plan is developed and all clearances are obtained. The woods to the south of the nest are more open, but a southerly vantage point might not give the best view of the present nest site, as the nest tree itself may have more large nest support branches on that side, obstructing the view. The nest is more visible from the west (especially the northwest, from the shoulder of the road), but disturbance should not be created inside the 330 foot prohibited zone. It is not likely that FDOT, which owns the shoulder of the road up to the temporary chain link fence, would permit construction of a platform or tower. There may not be enough City property on the west side to create a buffer, and the woods are rather dense. When we were searching for Hope, we could see the nest very well from the dead melaleucas, about 300-400 feet almost directly to the west, but we were on South Florida Water Management District (WMD) land. An elevated platform at the very edge of City land would provide a great vantage point. I believe that WMD killed the trees in an attempt to allow the area to return to its original \"Everglades\" state. The sawgrass is quite healthy there, among the skeletons of the melaleucas, and Brian Mealey noted the return of several native shrubs. It might not make sense to disturb that area, though anything is possible. An alternative might be to create a path along the western-most edge of City property-- you can see from the aerial photographs that herbicides were used as much as 20-30 feet inside the City land, so that margin is already clear. In my opinion, a vehicular road and parking lot would require expensive engineering and probably would be excessive in scope, environmentally and economically. However, the idea of a footpath leading to an observation area (contained by fencing and including a raised platform) might be worth considering. There may be several candidate locations for observation posts to the west and southwest, or even deeper to the south. A footpath would also be easier to control and secure than a roadway. It could be quite muddy until the winter dry season is established. That leaves the issue of where to park, something that has to be worked out in the next few months before the crowds return (assuming the eagles do come back to the nest site). I wonder about these possible areas: 1. South shoulder of Pines Boulevard west of 209th Avenue and east of 208th. Not as high, broad and level as the area in front of the nest. 2. Cul-de-sac at 209th (could hold maybe 6-10 automobiles if striped). Not sure whether the City or FDOT would have jurisdiction here, but it appears to be on FDOT land. 3. The south extension of 208th Avenue is posted now, and may be too narrow to permit parking, but is there room on both the shoulders to create perpendicular or diagonal parking? 4. Along 209th, to the north towards the High School, with parking restricted to one side of the street only-- would this be wide enough to accommodate the high school traffic-- they are adding a new senior class this coming school year, so there will be many more cars. This option, and any other parking that might be allowed along the north side of Pines Boulevard would provide pedestrians with safe crossing at the traffic signals. 5. There is the outside chance that the School District might need to lease all or part of the cow pasture on the north side of Pines between 209th and the Post Office at 210th Avenue, but the present student parking lot (permit only) is not fully utilized. Will there be pressure for more parking when the new senior class arrives? Does anyone have better ideas? Please join the discussion. The present viewing areas are about 180-200 feet from the nest, in areas that are already disturbed. Keep in mind that the melaleucas grow very quickly, and a \"good\" view may quickly turn bad. Conversely, both the melaleucas and the Australian Pines are quite brittle, and may fall, opening up new vistas. Of course, the nest tree itself is vulnerable to a windstorm. Happily, FPL has expertise in establishing alternative nesting sites and may offer to erect a pole platform if this should occur.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagle-Sanctuary-Steering-Commitee-members-raise-concerns-about-safety-of-nest-observers-td3337385.html","images":0},{"id":"3362505","topic":"3337385","order":6,"title":"Re: Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Commitee members raise concerns about safety of nest observers","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-07-31T09:09:20.367000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I love the idea of a western observation location! We could better observe the eagles as they fly around and perch in the dead maleleucas as well as still see the nest, but from a safer distance for the birds. Also, many other birds of prey land in the dead stand of maleleucas and some watchers have even photographed Pileated Woodpeckers there. It would be so much better to get the watchers away from the road. I still think we would need a plan to stop people standing along the south side of Pines in front of the nest. Maybe if we have a dedicated[specific nest-location detail withheld], it would help the liability situation for the City....but that's one for the legal experts! However, I'm sure that it is important that we do not introduce human traffic between the nest site and the stand of melaleucas to the west. The adults spend a great deal of time in the dead trees, and I'm sure that they would feel threatened if there were a throng of observers located between their roost and their nest. Are we talking about an observation site along US 27? That seems pretty far for good observing. We also need to remember that when the kids fledged, they spent a great deal of time roosting to the south. They may have chosen this location as it offered them a bit more of a buffer from the presence of observers at a time when their flight skills would not allow them to fly from perceived danger as easily as a fully flighted adult could. I think that we must be very cautious about changing any human activity patterns and locations. We can't do much about the increase of traffic along Pines Blvd, but where we funnel the curious public must be very cautiously planned.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagle-Sanctuary-Steering-Commitee-members-raise-concerns-about-safety-of-nest-observers-td3337385.html","images":0},{"id":"3365231","topic":"3337385","order":8,"title":"Re: Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Commitee members raise concerns about safety of nest observers","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-07-31T17:36:43.885000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"That's a good thought, Kelly. I wish we could get into the eagles minds and know what they are thinking and what would be best for them. So many times I would wonder why they would come and land in the trees closest to all the nest watchers right above the power lines and stay there a long time and not seem bothered by their closeness to us. Sometimes they would be very close to the highway in the maleleucas and other times you could barely spot them way back to the south or west. It seems like such a good idea to try to re-locate people from standing with their backs to the highway while cars are streaming by, or stopping, or the drivers paying attention to the nest, and not where they are going...but never at the expense of the eagles. I think it's great that we have \"brainstorming\" here on the forum to have a purposeful flow of ideas to increase safety for the eagles always, but also considering the environment for the people observing and documenting their life cycle.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagle-Sanctuary-Steering-Commitee-members-raise-concerns-about-safety-of-nest-observers-td3337385.html","images":0},{"id":"3370257","topic":"3337385","order":9,"title":"Re: Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Commitee members raise concerns about safety of nest observers","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2009-08-01T15:03:28.997000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Ken, The idea of having diagonal parking along the southern end of 208th seems great if land/space is available. Of course, this takes away from having a western vantage point. On the west looks to be the \"easiest\" place to work-in access and viewing - the only negative is the eagles seem to love to roost on the dead malaleucas and we wouldn't want to do anything to upset the routine as we know it. But maybe they would just roost on them anyway as they did at the australian pine in front of us along the roadway? Also, they may choose to roost to other dead trees to the south. Elevated walkways (a la Chapel Trail) are used because they are supported by posts which can be driven in the ground by machine without much distruption to the immediate area and allow the natural habitate to continue to grow beneath them. Also, animal life can traverse across without any apparent impedement. If access could be provided from 208th to an area behind the nest (south) this may ultimately be the best solution. It would probably be best to take a group out into the area now while the eagles are gone and verify some of the available spaces and views around the site. This way, some of the suggestions could be ruled out or brought to the top of the wish-list. Another thought about parking at the south part of 208th is it partially gets the cars out of site from passer-bys. When they see cars parked and observers standing around, they tend to slow (or even stop!!!) right in the roadway while other cars are approaching them at 45 or 50 mph. I'm sure Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary has additional numbers not represented on my map. The number appears to be climbing as of late in the day today, 7/9/09, and several sites have had more than one Osprey die, for example Dunedin Country Club. For all those who are copied - Fish and Wildlife is coordinating necropsies for several of the Osprey. One was done this week. We will have to wait for the results. Comments from rescuers have consistently been that these are the most emaciated Osprey they have seen, just feathers and bone. Quite worrisome indeed. I will continue to update the list. On my way to drop off the bodies to FWC yesterday I found a dead Osprey on East Lake Road just south of John Chestnut Park, it was a juvenile. This evening an adult Osprey was killed on 118th Avenue near an area where there was a fish die off which I understand can happen after heavy rains. There were several Osprey in the area and we thought they had probably been attracted by the fish floating on the water. The fish die off and the death of the adult Osprey were reported to FWC.\" Later today, Barb found that another Osprey had died of trauma. Excerpts of her report: \"This evening 7/11/09 a concerned citizen... called me about an injured Osprey... The fish die off was right across the street from that location... [He] said he has been in that area for 16 years and had not noticed anything like this before. A fish die off may have been what attracted quite a few Osprey. One adult Osprey was likely hit by a car and died before I got there. The body is in my freezer [for FWC investigators]... There is obvious trauma. The Osprey was most likely feeding in the area... [The concerned citizen] went through a lot of trouble to get a hold of me and he is asking for an investigation into the fish die off and the stench coming off the property. I did call the Wildlife Alert number between 9:30 and 9:38pm this evening and was told the information would be passed along...\" We flew in from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale this past Tuesday and passed over the Tampa-St. Pete coastline. I noted quite a large algae bloom that extended out into the Gulf.. I wonder whether the turbidity of the runoff from heavy rain, along with the cloud cover, deprive the algae of light, and this causes them to deplete the oxygen instead of generating it, suffocating the fish. Of course, the rain may also wash toxic chemicals into the estuary. Will be interested in hearing what the necrocopies may reveal. Osprey deaths baffle biologists At least 12 ospreys found dead in recent weeks Updated: Saturday, 11 Jul 2009, 7:27 AM EDT Published : Saturday, 11 Jul 2009, 7:23 AM EDT • Cynthia Smoot CLEARWATER, Fla. - What's killing ospreys in northern Pinellas County? That's what state biologists and Audubon members want to know after at least a dozen young ospreys have turned up dead in the past two weeks. For ten years, a pair of ospreys have raised their young in a dead tree in Laura Collins' yard on Stevensons Creek in north Clearwater. \"You get to see all aspects of it, when they're young, what the parents do. It's just an amazing bird,\" Collins says. Collins says this year's two fledglings were actively fishing and flying around until a couple of weeks ago, when one was found dead under a tree in her next door neighbor's yard. Then the second one also perished. \"Over the holiday weekend, Saturday, one of the other babies was found on the ground, dead,\" says Collins. Barb Walker of Clearwater Audubon's Osprey Watch is worried. She says all 12 dead ospreys have been found in the north Clearwater/Dunedin/Tarpon Springs area and rescuers are reporting finding birds in poor condition. \"They're severely emaciated. They're dehydrated. They've starved to death and when you have citizens that say 'but I've been watching them eating,' then you have to wonder what's going on biologically,\" says Walker. Collins wonders if what killed the ospreys had anything to do with the loss of her cat, Nango. Only 3 years old, he was found dead in her neighbor's yard, in the same area as one of the dead birds. \"Whether it's coincidental or linked to it, I don't know,\" says Collins. \"But when you have so many things that are right by the water...it kind of just raises a question.\" For now there are lots of questions and no answers. An osprey carcass sent to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Conservation lab in Gainesville earlier this week was too deteriorated to necropsy. Two more carcasses have been sent to the lab, but it'll be at least a few days until they'll know anything, and toxicology tests can take even longer. In the meantime, Walker would like to hear from anyone who finds a dead osprey, and urges that if you see a sick or weakened bird, to contact Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary at [phone withheld]. A concerned citizen reported that an Ospreys nesting tree was cut down. The Osprey had 2 young. The first chick was hit by a car the day he/she fledged or pre-fledged. The second was still being brought fish by parents but had taken at least a first flight as I understand it. The concerned citizen called law enforcement and submitted photos. They took pictures because they told the people ahead of time that a permit was required. Neighbors confirmed the tree was cut down anyway. Since the incident the Osprey have been in distress and are confused by the loss. Losing a baby and a house in a short time frame doesn't make for a good season. The nest was in a palm tree. If you remove a nest a replacement pole and platform are supposed to be put up within 300 feet of the original nest and at least the same height, preferably higher depending on the environment. We expect to follow up with the State Attorney's Office later this week. There are a lot of people and a lot organizations out there trying to follow the rules and there are some that aren't. Osprey are large birds and they do need a good amount of space including nesting structures, perch trees and fishing territories. When a nest falls, even by natural causes, Osprey can become unproductive the next season while shopping for new real estate. One pair I monitored was not successful adapting from a dead tree which fell on a golf course to a light standard the year after the tree went down. Others seem to find a new place easily, not always in the next property owners favor. If they follow the rules they could get stuck with the bill if another move is necessary. I am so glad there are so many concerned citizens out there. Thanks again for all you do. Where eagles dare to nest becomes Pasco tourist attraction Full story: http://www.tampabay.com/news/humaninterest/where-eagles-dare-to-nest-becomes-pasco-tourist-attraction/1093378 By Jodie Tillman, Times Staff Writer In Print: Saturday, May 8, 2010 An eagle checks on one of its babies in a highly visible nest between the entrances to Anclote Gulf Park and Anclote River Park. [Courtesy of Andrea Webb] An eagle lands on the unstable tree that holds its estimated 800-pound nest. Observers worry that the tree and nest will fall. [Courtesy of Andrea Webb] HOLIDAY — Andrea Webb has stood by the side of Baillies Bluff Road for five hours at a time. She bundled up in a parka during the winter, sweated during the recent heat wave and stood her ground during a rainstorm one afternoon, mascara running down her face. \"I looked like Alice Cooper that day,\" she said. No matter. Webb, a photographer, has been transfixed for the last five months by a thing of natural beauty: High up in a dead, bone-white pine tree, on land owned by Progress Energy, is a nest where a pair of eagles have raised their two babies. Birders and other experts say the nest, which is between the entrances to Anclote Gulf Park and Anclote River Park, is highly unusual because of its visibility to the public: Most times, eagles' nests are either hidden from view on private property or else located deep in the woods. \"It's a rare and unique opportunity for people interested in birds to observe the entire breeding cycle of the eagle,\" said Dave Bruzek, lead environmental specialist for Progress. \"You can observe their courtship behavior, their nest-building behavior, their egg-laying, their rearing of the young.\" With little fanfare, the nest near Progress' Anclote Power Plant has become an accidental tourist attraction as dozens of motorists sometimes park along the side of the road to catch a glimpse of the iconic birds. Visitors include everyone from locals checking in on the familiar pair to birding enthusiasts who learn of the nest on websites and make the stop part of their Florida trip. \"I've seen them from the beginning,\" said Mick Wellin, an Indiana snowbird who stopped by to see the eagles one last time Monday before heading home. \"It's been a fabulous adventure.\" This nest is thought to have been the October-to-May home to the same pair of eagles for seven years. Eagles typically have a strong fidelity to their nests, even after they've been gone up north for six months. But the eagles' most passionate admirers also fear danger lies ahead next year, both to the humans and the birds. The potential danger to humans? Traffic. Some days, dozens of cars are parked on the side of the road, most of them on the opposite side. But when those people cross the road, they might walk right into the path of oncoming motorists in the 45 mph zone. \"It looks like a football game,\" Webb said. \"People with hundreds of thousands of dollars in (camera) lenses.\" So last month, Webb and Barbara Walker of the Clearwater Audubon Society pitched an idea to the Pasco County Tourist Development Council: How about putting up signs and building a scenic pull-off area near the nest on nearby county-owned property? Though sports has dominated the debate over how to spend tourism money in recent years, Pasco County has long had an \"It's Only Natural\" theme in its tourism materials. Because the county is listed on the Great Florida Birding Trail, Pasco has been featured in birding magazines that generate inquiries from visitors, said Eric Keaton, tourism manager. Keaton said officials from various agencies would need to meet and figure out how the pull-off area might work, noting that a bike trail is also planned to one day link the Holiday parks. He said the eagles might be something Pasco could promote. The county has about a dozen known eagles' nests, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. \"So far, so good,\" he said. \"It's hard to turn away from bald eagles.\" And it's the eagles for which many fear most deeply. That's because the tree that has held the estimated 800-pound nest is nearing its end. Volunteers have spent this season running out to the scene after heavy winds, their hearts dreading the possibility of seeing a collapsed tree and a nest — with the eggs or flightless fledglings — on the ground. \"This may be the most-watched nest in Florida,\" Walker said. Bruzek, the Progress Energy environmental specialist, worries, too. The company is weighing its options for what it can do once the eagles clear out this month. One option is to relocate the nest to a platform structure. An alternative is to build a similar nest — sticks woven together, filled in with ground materials and lined with soft grass — and erect it into a nearby tree that's in better shape. Then Progress would ask state wildlife officials for a permit to remove the original nest, so that the eagles wouldn't have that option, he said, \"and we'd risk watching the nest fall down.\" But it's a risky proposition; the eagles might come back, not find the nest to their liking and go somewhere else. \"So yeah, I fully appreciate those folks want a nest they can sit and observe. But I can't guarantee that,\" he said. \"We're talking about a wild animal that we have no control over their behavior.\" Webb and Walker say they understand that possibility, too. They said that even if the eagles decide to go somewhere else, the spot is good for other bird-watching, including osprey and the red-headed woodpecker that was checking out the eagles' nest Monday while the raptors had gone to lunch. Another eagles' nest, which is harder to observe, is located at nearby Key Vista park. Webb, who moved to north Pinellas last year when her husband changed jobs, said she'd never been much of a birdwatcher. She had just been going to local parks with her camera to take nature shots when someone asked her if she'd seen the Anclote eagles. \"You gain a sense of peace watching the birds,\" she said. \"When you see them, you're just hooked on watching.\" As if on cue, she suddenly spotted someone coming in for a landing: It was one of the juveniles, coming back to the nest from the water. \"There he is, there he is!\" she said. She pointed her camera and addressed her subject: \"You're so beautiful!\" Jodie Tillman can be reached at [email withheld] or [phone withheld]. This means that the eggs were laid on or about February 10. On February 14 you posted a great photo of both of the adults at the nest and looking down. Maybe that was when the second egg was laid. So glad the pair is still around hoping they nest in the same tree. Have you seen their eaglet curious if she is still around ? I usually go on the weekends less traffic and noise and pull off the same place there is a pull over strip on 10th st. I used to go around 8am to catch them flying back to the nest with food. Probably won't go over there till Nov when they would be mating and rebuilding their nest. After that we watched for the adults and listened for any eaglet calls. Volunteers heard no eagle calls during multiple visits on Thursday and Friday. Then, late yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, Richard stopped by on his bicycle and heard a call which he recorded and then confirmed was indeed the cry of an eaglet. Phil notified Florida FWC and arranged to meet an officer at the nest in the morning. I arrived at the eagle nest this morning at 6:50 AM, just after sunrise. At first all was quiet, but at about 7:10 AM there were the unquestionable calls of an eaglet from an area very close to the sidewalk and a short distance east of the nest tree. With other watchers, we counted over a dozen calls before the arrival of FWC, at about 8:15 AM. Phil and the FWC Officer entered the woodland and searched through the tangle of fallen trees for over two hours. Probably because the eaglet was startled by the presence of the rescuers, it fell silent, calling only about twice but never near enough for Phil and the Officer to determine its location. Then at about 10:45 AM they finally felt that, because of the nearly impenetrable undergrowth, it was necessary to suspend the search. The FWC Officer was just preparing to depart when Richard looked into a break in the foliage and said he could see the eaglet! I waved down the Officer just as he was departing. It was amazing because I found it almost impossible to see the eaglet as Richard did his best to point it out, saying, \"Look for its yellow feet.\" That did it and I got partial views of the eaglet standing tall on a fallen log, only about 20 yards from the edge of the woodlands. We watched as the Officer, carrying a large net, got within a yard or so from the eaglet. It suddenly ran into a hole between the limbs of the fallen tree. It was crouched down and quite inaccessible. Phil and his wife Mary joined the FWS Officer in trying to access the eaglet. They brought some fish, in case it might entice the hungry bird to come out into the open. Pembroke Pines Fire & Rescue then arrived with longer poles and a chain saw. The latter was not needed as the eaglet responded to gentle probing by moving to a spot where is was finally captured. Kudos to volunteers Phil and Mary for being part of the exhausting search effort. Richard was doubly a hero for this eaglet. By hearing and reporting its presence last night he renewed the search. To top it off, it was Richard who spotted the eaglet just before the search would have again been suspended.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MAY-2-Second-Eaglet-Rescued-The-value-of-having-many-eyes-on-the-eagles-td7576179.html","images":8}]
