The surveys were conducted on a rotating basis, usually in January, covering 1/3 of the state every three years. (I have asked Billi about whether aerial surveys are continuing since the Bald Eagle was de-listed from Endangered Species status, and she will let us know.) Interestingly, the pilot is now headed out to New Mexico to view the rosy-finches at Sandia Crest. Back in 1999, Mary Lou and I worked with the US Forest Service, Central New Mexico Audubon and a number of participating merchants to start a feeding project there. It has grown into an important research endeavor, and is the most accessible place on earth to see all three species at the same time. Now into the fourth nesting season (just as are we in Pembroke Pines), Billi is presently monitoring nine nests in her County-- some were spotted by the pilot and others are not visible from the air, verifying aerial reports, noting nest tree condition, and collecting data. Just as has happened here, volunteer interest has decreased and she is not receiving many reports and has to do most of the work alone. Billi writes: \"I have some hatchlings and some are still incubating. The worst thing is 5 nests were in trees that died, deteriorated and fell or snapped off in the last 4 years! Luckily only one nest had a fledgling, the others fell before eggs were laid and then rebuilt nearby in time to lay. Attached is a photo I took of the contents of one soggy nest we excavated at Thanksgiving, that fell in a big storm Oct. 8. I was looking for nasty trash such as monofilament and rope, but found nothing like that. Eagles usually discard carcasses far from the nest, but occasionally something gets mushed down in the duff and fails to compost.\"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Report-and-photo-from-Indian-County-td7166150.html","images":1},{"id":"7573597","topic":"7573597","order":1,"title":"Immature Bald Eagle in Miramar 26 AUG 2014","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-08-26T10:09:05.979000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"As I was walking home from birding the West Broward WCA this morning, an immature Bald Eagle flew up from the surface of the unpaved portion of Miramar Parkway just west of the barricades at SW 192nd Terrace (entrance to Monaco Cove). It was cloudy and the bird was flying directly away to the east into the sunlight. My impression was that it was dark overall, resembling a first year (juvenile) bird. When I processed my only 2 decent shots it appears to have some white on its belly and flanks. Yet it does not exhibit signs of molting its flight feathers-- they are uniform and in good shape. The second photo was badly out of focus so I had to sharpen it. I believe it supports my observation that the flight feathers are uniform and do not show signs of molt, so I will stick with my ID as a juvenile (first year) bird. I was walking out pretty fast as rain was threatening, but I heard a Red-shouldered Hawk calling up ahead. As I approached the area it sounded as if it was in one of the tall Royal Palms along the road, so my attention was focused there. The eagle rose up in front of me, but I did not actually see it sitting on the road. I assumed that it was just taking off because it had to gain momentum as it rose. It could have been swooping low because it turned out that the hawk was harassing the eagle. The hawk chased the eagle for a few seconds after it had gained altitude. It's possible that the eagle grounded itself because the hawk was bothering it. I did check the roadway to see if there was any evidence of carrion or prey but found none. The shoulder had been mowed only the day before and this often kills rodents and snakes that attract scavengers. By the way, yesterday they mowed right over the site of the Common Ground-Dove nest. This is what it looked like this morning:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Immature-Bald-Eagle-in-Miramar-26-AUG-2014-td7573597.html","images":1},{"id":"2635085","topic":"2635085","order":1,"title":"nest watch, Mon 5:30-7:30, Tues morning 8:15-11:15","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-04-14T16:07:44.668000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"These last 2 visits to the nest have been thrilling.....to see the young eagles flying as well as they are in such a short amount of time is just amazing to me. On both visits the young have flown off the nest within a couple minutes of each other and returned pretty much 1 after the other also. It's fun to think of them exploring their new world together. Last night when I arrived both young were resting on the nest. Shortly, a parent dropped off food and they both jumped up with lots of noisy calling and shared a fish dinner. Lou was taking videos and said that there was a huge cloud of flies all over the nest, all over the eagles (not too appealing, for sure). Hope finished first and soon took off to give Lou and me an amazing air show as \"she\" flew in large circles around the nest area and out over our heads even with the tree tops. As usual, I was so in the moment that I didn't even move to take pictures. Lou had the video going so maybe he got some of the action...but he was pretty captivated just watching also. Hope then flew back to a branch above the nest and it was Justin's turn to perform a slightly shorter airshow in the same area....just awesome! When Justin returned \"he\" had a lot of speed and went into the nest so fast he tumbled and you could hear the sound of his wings scratching the sticks in the nest as he slid. This morning was very similar, with flying practice separated by 2 feedings and resting on the nest. Carolyn arrived as 1 of the new fliers was above the highway, circling overhead. Eventually it met up with some vultures and circled quite high, just soaring around. The black vultures kept having to flap their wings while our \"little\" eagle just soared by them with wings outstretched. The siblings eventually met up (it seemed to be south of the nest) and landed 1 after the other. A short time later a parent brought food. The adult flew up to a high, bare horizontal branch way up in the nest tree (I had not seen it at that location before) while its offspring ate. Justice was funny....vocalizing for \"his\" share as Hope ate and \"he\" watched. \"He\" first moved around to Hope's right side (she faced east) and stood there staring at her eating. Getting no notice, he then moved around her tail to go over to her left side and stare at the food from that angle....neither demonstrating any aggression. In a few minutes Hope moved off to the right nest and Justice ate what was left. After a short time the youngsters were back taking off again, 1 after the other. They flew in a western direction and Carolyn and I couldn't spot them anywhere. They were flying (or so we thought) for about 15 min. when an adult appeared with food delivery. The siblings must have been roosting in the trees behind the nest as they both came flying fast at the nest and loudly calling. One managed to get in the nest and the other went over the back edge and we heard the sound of wings hitting branches. Carolyn and I both held our breath but in a few seconds the wings appeared and then the rest of the body as the over zealous eagle climbed back into the rear(south) rim of the nest. After a quick meal they both settled down for much deserved rest and I headed home for the same!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/nest-watch-Mon-5-30-7-30-Tues-morning-8-15-11-15-td2635085.html","images":0},{"id":"2636043","topic":"2635085","order":2,"title":"Re: nest watch, Mon 5:30-7:30, Tues morning 8:15-11:15","author":"AquaLou","date":"2009-04-14T20:02:59.148000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thanks, Trisha, for the detailed update. Observers cannot be certain about the timing of egg-laying. A few days before the first egg is laid the female will spend more time on the nest, often down quite low. If she tends to get up and fly off the nest periodically it is probable that she is \"broody\" but had not yet laid. Once she goes down deep and stays there for a prolonged period of time it may indicate the event. The best confirmation is when the male is permitted to exchange incubation duties. This may happen at intervals of an hour or two or longer. While incubating, the adult may change position and also tend to the eggs, turning them at intervals. This usually occurs about every 20-30 minutes. The pair will rarely leave the eggs uncovered, especially in cooler or stormy weather. I am proud to be part of EagleWatch, the premier citizen science initiative that works to protect eagles and their critical nesting habitat. Through EagleWatch, Audubon leverages the power and passion of volunteers to protect a species that was once on the brink of extinction. Last year, I shared in the experience of hundreds of volunteers who monitor eagle nests around the state as they reported their observations. The data we collect help track the health of Florida’s eagle population and inform conservation decisions. Even more exciting - last year was a good nesting season. But Bald Eagles in Florida continue to face pressures from loss of nesting and foraging habitat and human disturbance. I have learned that it is not enough to just protect eagles and their nests. We must also plan for long-term protection of the waterways where eagles fish and the old pine trees where future generations will nest and fledge their young. I am proud to be part of Audubon’s larger conservation efforts. Our work to create a healthy future for all birds helps ensure that species like the Bald Eagle never return to the endangered species list. Thank you to our EagleWatch volunteers, supporters, and partners for all you do to help protect eagles and educate others about these remarkable birds. It is truly my honor to work alongside you in this great conservation effort! As far as we know, it has always been adults that we see on the lighthouse in the lake behind our house. The last sighting on the lighthouse was Saturday morning, but I was out much of today. Actually, one or two weeks ago I saw two eagles there at the same time. One was sitting on the peak, and then another came and dove down (to hunt?) and then it seemed that the first was bumped off the peak by the second, and then the first one dove down. By the time I found my glasses they were gone, so I couldn't see the color of the heads. However, the one this past Saturday had a white head, as did the eagle(s) of past sightings. I would say we see the eagle at least every third day we're actually home, and recently (last weekend) one was there nearly all day, morning to night. I know there was some doubt, but I feel that this (these) must be the same eagles in the nest. We're not that far from there, and having seen two at once gives more credence to that hypothesis. The newly identified bald eagle hepacivirus, or BeHV, may contribute to the fatal disease, which causes eagles to stumble and have seizures. But BeHV was also found in eagles without symptoms of the syndrome, making a direct link between virus and disease difficult to confirm. The virus is related to human hepatitis C virus, which causes liver damage in people, and some birds with BeHV show similar effects. BeHV infects eagles from Washington to Florida but is most common in Wisconsin’s eagles... Wisconsin River Eagle Syndrome (WRES) was first described in the 1990s. The river attracts eagles year-round because its open waters allow the birds to fish through the winter. Observers near the river spotted eagles vomiting or staggering, and all of these birds either succumbed to the disease or were euthanized... Yet the presence of BeHV in birds collected outside of Wisconsin — none of which had been diagnosed with WRES — suggests the virus may not be responsible for the enigmatic disease, or that the story is more complex.... “We don’t think this virus is having a serious impact on the bald eagle population, but the fact that WRES is an unknown condition keeps our interest,” says Strom, an environmental toxicologist with the DNR. “This study is another piece of the puzzle. Hopefully, we can find more pieces and figure out what is happening.” Click Here for Full story in SciTechDaily","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagles-Across-America-Infected-by-Newly-Discovered-Virus-td7575366.html","images":0},{"id":"6235052","topic":"6235052","order":1,"title":"Both eaglets OK, and a Merlin near nest - Sunday April 3","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-04-03T13:40:54.749000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"Mary Lou and I made a brief welfare check on the eagle nest at about 8:10 AM before going grocery shopping. It looks like at least a foot of new sticks have been added to the nest as their lighter color stands out. I wonder why we are seeing the adults bring food back to the nest even though they are not incubating or feeding their young. It would be interesting to know if this is a behavior that you see in all nesting pairs. Your theory of it being a way for one adult to bring the other back to the nest makes sense as the adults did that same behavior when the young took their somewhat unsuccessful first flights. Perhaps since the southern most pairs don't seem to migrate up north they keep using the nest more often. The migrating pairs are far from their nests and so obviously eat where ever they are each day. Just more thoughts to ponder about our magnificent eagles.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/One-adult-quot-Brown-tip-quot-at-nest-this-morning-td4124312.html","images":0},{"id":"7573915","topic":"7573915","order":1,"title":"Eagle sighted 1/15/2015","author":"Maria Rosa Drake","date":"2015-01-15T08:37:05.451000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"An Eagle was roosting at 7am on the malelucas just West of the nest in their usual spot.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-sighted-1-15-2015-td7573915.html","images":0},{"id":"7573077","topic":"7573077","order":1,"title":"MAY 31 - Juvenile eagle over Harbour Lakes to the SE of nest tree","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-05-31T16:39:23.520000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"This morning a first-year Bald Eagle soared over the wetlands west of Harbour Lakes subdivision and then circled over that subdivision and its large lake. It is always so much easier telling them apart when they are together because the female is noticeable bigger. To my eye, Joy is a bit \"back-heavy\" or \"pear-shaped,\" while Pride tends to taper down in the back. Joy's tail appears shorter-- it may be, but perhaps her primary flight feathers are longer, but in many views her wing tips extend almost to the tip of her tail, as shown in Lisa's great shot. The profiles of their heads can vary depending upon whether the feathers are flat or erect. When the feathers are relaxed I think that Pride tends to show a rather \"flat\" forehead while Joy shows more of an angle. The depth of their bills at the base is said to be different, with that of the female a bit larger, but I have trouble seeing this in the field. The same for the difference in toe length (hallux) which is longer in females. All that being said, I think that this eagle's body shape and low forehead point to it being Pride, but as Velinda knows it is very difficult to generalize about these subtle features, A few years ago Pride helped us by sprouting a couple of dark tail feathers, but for at least the past two years they both had pure white tails, although they can be stained at times. So that is my opinion, for what it's worth. Sorry for my delay in replying but we were up late because the train we were meeting yesterday evening was delayed 4 hours because the train ahead of the one my brother-in-law was riding hit a pedestrian and killed him/her. I live in Davie and have seen this Eagle twice now. The first sighting was on Memorial day May 27 , 2019 approximately 7pm. It circled the lake I live on and flew west. The second sighting was tonight June 2 , 2019 approximately 6:30pm. this time I believe it may have grabbed a duckling. Do you think this was one of the Pembroke pines Eagles ? I have never seen an Eagle on my lake in the 17 years I lived here. I have visited the pp nest several years ago. I'm curious to know your thoughts and if there have been any other sightings of this Eagle. Thank you. Regards, Al My reply: Hi, Al-- Since the eagles are finishing up their breeding season they are apt to move around. The south Florida adults tend to wander in their general territories but the juveniles and other immature birds start to fly north where the water is cooler and fish are easier to find. (In Florida the fish seek cooler and deeper water). So it is likely that the adult is relatively local. Some lakes have experienced fish die-offs and the eagles are scavenging them, so adults may appear in unusual places. Actually the active nest closest to you would be almost directly south, to the east of Dolphin Stadium, about 8 miles away in Miami-Dade County. This is nest designated DA981 (Temporary, Florida Audubon Eagle Watch monitored) or DA009 (FWC monitored). A contractor allegedly applied for a permit to remove the nest but I never heard the result. Two fledged eaglets and two adults were present in late April, 2019. The Pembroke Pines nest BO002 is a bit more to the southwest of your position, 12 miles away , and the Deerfield Beach nest BO003 is 16 miles away to the north. The adult may have come from any of these, or may have been a wanderer from a greater distance to the south. The nest tree is on private land, located in the middle of the athletic field parking lot on the campus of Mooseheart Child City and School. The marked parking spaces go right up to the trunk of the tree. This seems not to have bothered the eagles, as they have returned to the same nest for a second breeding season. This year there are three eaglets. The oldest appears to be about 4-5 weeks old. Coincidentally, as is the case with the Pembroke Pines nest which was the first active nest recorded in Broward County, this nest is the first known active nest in Kane County. Last year the pair relocated from their first nest, on the Mooseheart campus about a half mile away. That nest, first occupied i 2009, was destroyed in a wind storm. Happily both eaglets were successfully rehabilitated and released to the wild. It is such a thrill to have these two \"pioneer\" nests so close to each of our homes. Since it was not considered an emergency, they put me in contact with Michelle Van Deventer, FWC Bald Eagle Coordinator (see my post from yesterday). After considering that the eaglet very likely had not survived, Michelle authorized me to investigate under the nest. Her instructions were that if we discovered any eagle remains, we were not to touch them and instead call FWC, as a forensic examination would need to be conducted to determine the cause of death. I had earlier obtained permission from the City of Pembroke Pines to enter the nest area, and notified the head of Public Works of my intention to walk out to the nest the next morning (today). Al Griffin and I arrived in the area of the nest before 8:00 AM this morning. As has been the case, neither adult nor young Bald Eagles were seen or heard. Al had already set up two ladders that provided a way to get over the fence directly in front of the nest tree. He also had a small chain saw which allowed us to get through the tangle of Melaleuca saplings, Brazilian Pepper shrubs and vines that are especially thick at the edge of the wooded property. This is a view looking north, back towards Pines Boulevard. The greater amount of light really encourages the dense growth at the margins of the woodland. We had to hack our way about 20 yards before entering a more open area populated by larger Melaleucas and Sawgrass. There were areas of standing water and mud, but the area immediately around the nest tree was somewhat clearer. By chance, Trisha showed up and was able to retrieve a machete from Al's truck, which also came in handy. There was much evidence of animal activity in the immediate area of the nest. One straight and well-worn track looked like an alligator trail to Al. Other trails wound around the nest tree and the trunks of nearby trees. We found three burrows that looked as if they were currently used dens of medium-sized mammals. Raccoons? We saw no tracks as the ground was covered in leaves and pine needles. We carefully searched a circular area about 50 feet around the nest, and found many prey remains-- feathers of white and black and white birds, probably adult and immature White Ibis, and possibly egrets. A few feathers were white with brightly iridescent black areas that may have come from a Wood Stork or possibly a Muscovy Duck. However, there was no evidence of a dead eaglet. Nearly all the contour feather we found were white, and they were more concentrated to the west of the nest tree, not surprising in view of the prevalent easterly winds. This is a view of the nest tree from the side opposite the road. One large feather was of particular interest. Was it possibly an eagle feather, and could it have come from the eaglet? If the latter, it certainly could not have been shed naturally (molted) at such a young age. We have not seen signs of molt in the adult birds, but the feather appeared undamaged, unlike the other feathers, some of which were attached to flesh. This feather did not look like one that had been torn out by a predator or scavenger. It was a fresh-looking primary flight quill, 16 3/4 inches (42 cm) long and up to 2 1/4 inch (6 cm) wide, dark brown on the top and bottom, located about 10 feet east of the base of the nest tree. Both the top (dorsal) and the bottom (ventral) surfaces of the feather followed the same pattern. The dorsal surface of the feather shaft was brown, while the underside of the shaft was white. The base of the feather had white downy tufts. Past the white area, the mid portion of the narrower leading edge had a dark brown band that measured about 1 1/2 inches (3.5 cm). The mid portion of the remaining (distal) leading edge was lighter brown, with a 4 inch darker brown area at the feather tip. The vanes of the trailing edge matched the dark brown areas of the leading edge, but the base of the vanes nearest the middle of the shaft were the same light brown color as those on the opposite (leading edge). There was no barring. I believe that the leading edge, particularly, showed sign of wear, something we would not expect to see if it came from a newly fledged eaglet. We will ask experts for help in identifying the feather. After about two hours of searching the nest area, three police patrol cars showed up, lights flashing. Phil, bicycling by the nest as he often does, had called them after seeing our vehicles and hearing us in the woods. Al and Trisha handled he cops while I worked my way to the southwest, generally following areas with more feathers. This brought me into the heart of the stand of herbicide-killed Melaleuca trunks where the eagles often roost. It also provided a panoramic view of the west side of the \"eagle forest.\" I scanned the treetops for signs of the eaglet, as we did a couple of years ago when one went missing and we found it \"tree-hopping\" back to the nest. No luck, and likewise the areas around the larger and favored roost trees were clear. Al joined me there and we concluded our search and drank some of his delightfully cold water.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Unsuccessful-search-for-missing-eaglet-this-morning-MAR-30-td7423305.html","images":11},{"id":"7424387","topic":"7423305","order":2,"title":"Re: Unsuccessful search for missing eaglet this morning MAR 30","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2012-03-31T06:57:26.510000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Looking again at that feather, I am convinced it is an old one from an adult, recently molted. The light areas are bleached by the sun. The more proximal (\"root\") end of the feather retains rich dark pigment as it probably was protected by wing coverts. The leading edge shows the greatest degree of wear and bleaching. Not sure why the very tip of the feather is dark, but perhaps the ends of the primaries are tucked away when the bird is roosting. Still not positive it is from the Bald Eagle. I have seen Turkey Vulture primaries that were quite long, but don't think they were 17 inches long. Can't think of any other possibility around here. If it is an eagle feather, I would like to contribute it to a Native American official before it deteriorates in the elements. FWC does not want to retrieve it because there is no carcass and no complaint or evidence of foul play. This photo of one of the adults shows how the outermost 12 or 13 (primary) flight feathers are arranged. Note that the outer 5 or 6 feathers (arising from the fingers of the \"hand,\" and often called pinions) are particularly long and pointed. The others become more rounded at the tip. The next row of feathers (secondaries) are shorter and more regular in pattern. When the wing is closed, each outermost feather covers the one closer to the body, thus shading the trailing edge of the feather. This accounts for the bleaching of the leading edge of the feather as seen in the one I photographed under the eagle nest. It probably is one of the longest of the pinions","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Unsuccessful-search-for-missing-eaglet-this-morning-MAR-30-td7423305.html","images":1}]
