At first we were concerned because there was no sign of life. At this age we expect the eaglet to be up and flapping about at least every 5 minutes or so. The nest platform is huge, perhaps 8 feet across, and the eaglet tends to rest on its far side. After about 20 minutes an adult flew in without prey. We were not sure whether it was the male or female parent. We could hear the eaglet's call, as if begging. The adult appeared to be tearing at prey and perhaps briefly feeding the eaglet, but it flew away after only about three minutes. We still could not see the eaglet and worried that perhaps it had fallen out of the nest and the adult was trying to entice it back to the nest with food. There followed another ten minutes or so of inactivity. At about 9:00 AM an adult that appeared to be the female parent came in with a fish. We were relieved to see the head of the eaglet as he took the food. Judging from the height of its forehead, this may be the female:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Monday-March-5-Feeding-in-the-morning-td7345823.html","images":4},{"id":"7346213","topic":"7345823","order":2,"title":"Re: Monday, March 5-- Feeding in the morning","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2012-03-05T15:14:26.651000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Great shots Ken - beautiful weather for viewing and photographing! In past years and at least twice this year we have seen an adult (last year sometimes both adults) flying SE towards the big lake in Sunset lakes. This is usually about a half hour after sunrise. I think that maybe they have a habit of going out for \"breakfast\" early until the eggs are laid. Three times this past week one or more adults have been engaged in nest restoration or building before they set out. In past years we have seen an adult chase after an Osprey to steal its catch. I have seen the eagles dive down after one that was roosting with a fish as well as one that just caught a fish. The Ospreys fish very early-- often they are already roosting and starting to eat a fish before the sun rises. This means the eagles are good at timing their hunt just after the Ospreys. Here is one photo I took with the eagle chasing after the Osprey over the wetlands at SW 196th Avenue just south of Pembroke Road. On the 11th we did not see any eagles on or near the nest, but we assumed that an incubating adult was low in the nest and not visible. The same for today, around 10:15 AM. We watched the nest for about 20 minutes before we saw the incubating adult suddenly stand up and shift its position. It quickly moved back down into the nest, so all I got was a shot of its head before it completely disappeared. This is the first year when there were no recorded observations of both eagles at or near the nest at the same time during the incubation period. Usually that are several records of seeing one of the pair roosting nearby while the other is on the nest, and watchers have also reported the exchange of incubation duties between members of the pair. In past nesting seasons there has never been an instance of prey exchange during migration, though the male was seen bringing in fresh nest materials on one occasion. The major factor this year may be the small number of observers and recorded observations. I hope readers get out to see if there is a change in behavior on the part of the birds during the next few days that may indicate that the first egg has hatched-- examples are both adults peering down into the nest, the brooding bird starts sitting a bit higher, and the onset of delivery of prey to the nest.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Adult-still-incubating-January-13-Day-33-td7185587.html","images":1},{"id":"7188896","topic":"7185587","order":2,"title":"Re: Adult still incubating January 13 (Day # 33)","author":"Steve","date":"2012-01-14T21:39:05.093000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"How long is the lens you're using to take these pictures? There is a sweet spot (depending upon if and how fast the wind is blowing) in a strip just to the west of this sign (photo below), which is at the beginning (east) end of the right turn lane lane that leads northbound on 209th Avenue. It helps to be six feet tall if the wind is not blowing, as the nest will be seen just above the top of one of the trees. From that vantage point it is just above the third wire, counting down from the top set of three wires, just to the right of a yellow \"curly-Q\" on the line above it. (FPL placed them to improve visibility of the lines for the eagles). Sometimes there is a view from the grassy median near the east end along the groomed hedgerow, in the same line of sight. Park off the pavement along the turning lane. Do not park on the south side of the road in front of the nest, or anywhere else that is posted. Do not park on 209th north of Pines Boulevard. Police will ticket illlegaly parked cars. There is a small dead end on 209th south of Pines that appears not to be posted. Otherwise, the Post Office parking lot is a block to the west, and there may be parking on the grassy swale along the south side of Pines to the east of the nest, but with recent construction some of the restrictions may have been changed.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Adult-still-incubating-January-13-Day-33-td7185587.html","images":1},{"id":"7189848","topic":"7185587","order":4,"title":"Re: Adult still incubating January 13 (Day # 33)","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2012-01-15T09:48:25.493000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Steve, I forgot to answer your question about the best time to see/photograph the eagles. My answer is any time of day. The sun moves up behind the nest, so there can be some back-lighting, but it is getting higher in the sky and is not too much of a problem later in the morning and the rest of the day into the evening. An adult will be on the nest continuously, and it will be easier to see it once the first egg hatches, after which time the other adult will start bringing in prey items. Feeding and exchange of incubation/brooding duties may take place at any time of day. Please report your observations as the egg may hatch on or about today (Sunday). We would like to pinpoint the hatch date. Look for the second adult roosting nearby, either in one of the Australian Pines along the road on either side of the nest tree, in the nest tree itself, or in the dead Melaleuca trunks to the west of the wooded area. Of course, scan the sky frequently as it may soar overhead.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Adult-still-incubating-January-13-Day-33-td7185587.html","images":0},{"id":"7288412","topic":"7185587","order":5,"title":"Re: Adult still incubating January 13 (Day # 33)","author":"EmeraldArthur","date":"2012-02-15T12:57:31.449000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"I observed a single Bald Eagle yesterday near my apartment. Many less-used or dormant forums were discontinued when Nabble reduced the number of servers to conserve resources. See David Walker's recent encouraging post under the Pembroke Pines sub-forum. This would be an attempt to preserve all the information in the thousands of contributions over the years. My non-technical understanding is that it would involve duplicating the Forum content in more modern computer code or readable form. As to hosting page, I will be happy to provide the code to embed the forum in any independent web page. It cannot be a page that is a sub-set to one of the multi-hosting commercial \"blog\" programs such a blogspot, wordpress etc., which would not accommodate the present coding format. The first-hatched should be about 13 days old. At 8:15 AM the female was quiet and rather low in the nest, so we assumed that the chick(s) had been fed and were probably sleeping. We note that when a food drop approaches the hen stands high and gets restless. Therefore we went birding at Chapel Trail and returned at about 9:30 to find the male roosting in the nest tree on a horizontal limb above the nest. We had probably just missed the food drop. Note the slimmer and more tapered body of the male. His bill also appears to be a bit less massive than that of the female. This year he does not have the dark streaks on the outer tail feathers that helped us distinguish him the past two seasons. The female was active, tearing at prey and feeding the the chick(s). I think we had just missed a prey drop. About 10 minutes after our arrival the male flew away low to the west. The female remained on the nest for less than 5 minutes before flying over to roost on a Melaleuca snag just to the west. She flew back to the tall pine just west of the nest and roosted a few minutes, then settled back on the nest. The nest was left unguarded for about ten minutes. This rarely happens when the chicks are less than two weeks old (see the Eagle Milestone spreadsheet PDF) This was the first time this season we witnessed the nest uncovered and without a lookout nearby.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Saturday-January-28-Eaglet-s-briefly-left-unguarded-td7234139.html","images":6},{"id":"7235269","topic":"7234139","order":2,"title":"Re: Saturday, January 28 -- Eaglet(s) briefly left unguarded","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2012-01-29T19:59:22.783000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Nice set of photos Ken - especially at the dead tree strand! As you know, I feel very strongly about this. Below is a great article I think you should post to educate folks. This article was authored by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Phil Bald Eagle Nest Monitoring Etiquette For many Bald Eagle enthusiasts there is little more exciting than watching their favorite birds become parents and raise young. Seeing our national symbol go through the process of nesting is a thrilling and satisfying experience. These once endangered birds have been successful enough at raising eaglets to be removed from the Endangered Species list. That being said, Bald Eagles remain protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. They are also, as a species, sensitive to human activity. Too much disturbance to nesting eagles can have a negative impact on nest success. The last thing any Bald Eagle lover would want is to unintentionally cause a nest to fail or to produce fewer young. Fortunately, there are precautions that you as a citizen scientist can take to limit the amount of stress you cause the birds that you are monitoring. Disturbance is defined as any activity that changes an eagle’s behavior. For example, if an eagle stops preening to study you then you have disturbed the eagle. Disturbances fall on a spectrum from minor (such as in the example above) to major (flushing from the nest). The impact of disturbance on nest success can also vary from minor to major, up to causing a nest to fail, and frequent disturbance can cause a cumulative effect, meaning that frequent minor disruptions can be as problematic as infrequent major disturbances. Most of the time an eagle’s behavior will tell you that he/she is uncomfortable long before the point of flushing, and learning these behavioral cues will help you know when your behavior is causing stress to the birds. The first sign of agitation to watch for is a simple change in eagle behavior, such as the example above. If a bird does not stop what he is doing as you approach, he is probably not bothered by you. If he does stop what he is doing but resumes his activity after giving you a once over, you are also probably not bothering him and so are safe to continue observing. If, however, the bird does not resume his task or becomes more agitated you should back away until the eagle becomes comfortable again. An eagle that is alarmed by your presence will progress from simply watching you to sitting up in an alert posture and may begin vocalizing. As the bird’s agitation increases it might start shifting in the nest/on its perch, raising its wings, leaning forward and preparing to fly and otherwise looking anxious until it finally flushes from the nest. Just like people, eagles have different comfort levels when it comes to disruption. Some birds seem unfazed by hikers walking within 100 feet of a nest while others are bothered to the point of flushing by any human activity within 1000 meters. Anecdotal observation seems to indicate that the eagles that choose to nest in close proximity to humans or areas with lots of human use are generally more tolerant of human activity while those birds that choose remote territories are more sensitive to disturbance. Nest stage also seems to affect how eagles respond to human activity. For example, eagles seem to have their lowest threshold for disturbance during courtship, pair formation and nest building. If we make the birds acutely uncomfortable during that critical period they are much more likely to give up on their site than they would be if disturbed when the eaglets are a few weeks old. Given these variations in behavior, there are some general guidelines for reducing disturbance that you can adjust based on the habits of each nesting pair. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recommended that active nest sites not be approached beyond a distance of 330 feet. In addition, you should do your best to have some sort of screen or blind between you and the nest, as research shows that eagles are more likely to be bothered by an activity when it happens in full view. Of course, you as an observer need a clear view of the nest to gather accurate data about what the eagles are doing, so you’ll need to work out a balance between seeing the nest and staying out of sight. Sometimes a road will offer an ideal vantage point for viewing a nest. In general, if a pair knew about a human activity prior to moving in and still chose the site, they will be tolerant of that activity, and that certainly applies to road traffic. In addition, birds in general seem to be less bothered by people in a car than people outside of one, and so cars make excellent bird blinds. If there is a place along a road that provides both a safe place for you to park and a view of the nest, you probably have found a great observation point. If you prefer to use a spotting scope over binoculars to watch the nest, window mounts are a fairly inexpensive and practical way to use your scope from inside your car. In some situations you might be able to climb out of your car and stand with the car between you and the nest, which still creates a sight buffer between you and the birds while giving you more range of motion and perhaps an easier view of the nest. As before, however, be sure that you park in such a way as to provide no danger to yourself or any other motorists. If the nest is not visible from the road or is remote enough that no roads take you within viewing distance of the nest, you might want to consider scouting out a good place to view the nest prior to the nesting season, keeping the USFWS buffer distance of 330 feet in mind and taking into account how the landscape changes when the trees have leaves. Again, take your cues from the eagles and adjust your viewing spot accordingly. With prior planning, an understanding of eagle behavior and attention to those behavioral cues, you can have a successful and enjoyable nest monitoring experience. Things to keep in mind are: Sensitivity to disturbance varies amongst individuals and across regions. Learn about the eagles in your region and adjust these guidelines accordingly. As a rule nesting eagles will be more sensitive to disturbance early in the nesting process; during nest building and incubation; be especially careful to avoid disturbance during this time. Eagles seem to be most alarmed by disturbances they can see; provide a visual buffer between you and the birds. Cars make excellent blinds. Respect a distance buffer using 330 feet as a rough starting point. If the eagles in your region prefer a much larger physical distance from humans, learn what constitutes a comfortable distance for those birds. In all cases, use the birds’ behavior as your guide and adjust your distance accordingly. As usual, we can be sure that FPL will avoid any unnecessary disturbance to the nest. Hi Ken! They were waiting to do the work until the end of the nesting season. I confirmed with them that the eaglets have fledged.
