No adults were present, and the eaglet showed itself briefly after about 15 minutes, although it called out rather frequently. It was possibly tearing at prey that was in the nest, but then settled down after flapping its wings a bit. Its flight feathers are growing quite rapidly. As we stood in the parkway median, a Palm Warbler perched on the hedge only about 10 feet away, and a squirrel walked the wire in front of the nest. After a walk at Chapel Trail Nature Center, we returned around 11:00 AM with Larry and Joy, from Virginia. This time the eaglet remained out of sight, and no adults showed up. The Sandhill Crane showed up at Chapel Trail-- we had not seen it for about a month and were worried about its welfare. It crossed from the north to the south side of Sheridan Road while we walked the boardwalk.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/March-12-Eaglet-doing-fine-but-no-adults-seen-td7365931.html","images":5},{"id":"7576125","topic":"7576125","order":1,"title":"Nest Visit 4-18-2021","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2021-04-18T21:05:01.809000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hello, Looks like the family is doing well, I only saw the two adults and one juvenile, but I think all is well. They do not sweat, so this and also by opening their wings to expose more surface area, and taking advantage of the position of the sun are common ways they have to regulate their body temperature. Fluffing their feathers, especially if there is a breeze, may also help. They may become less active so as to generate less body heat. Of course, soaring, bathing and seeking shade are other behavioral means of avoiding overheating. Bare parts of birds such as beak, legs and the gular area (between the bill and throat) are rich in blood vessels that also help dispel body heat as air is moved back and forth as they pant.. Cormorants commonly exhibit \"gular flutter\" and I think that I have seen the eagles vibrate their throats as well as open their mouths to force air back and forth as they breathe quickly. Vultures are known to urinate on their legs to cool by evaporation-- Black Vultures, especially, often have white legs because of this trait.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MAR-5-12-30-PM-Pride-works-while-new-female-watches-td7574055.html","images":0},{"id":"7574059","topic":"7574055","order":4,"title":"Re: MAR 5, 12:30 PM: Pride works while new female watches","author":"tczig","date":"2015-03-11T13:57:22.542000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Ken (or anyone reading this), based on all your observations about how the pair is behaving, do you think there are eggs in the nest? Since at least two successful copulation episodes were observed (and many more not observed, I'm sure) the female may have been fertilized and may have laid eggs several weeks back. However she never has shown a strong \"broodiness\" that characterized Joy, who usually spent several days deep in the nest before depositing eggs. She may have dropped the eggs anywhere, but possibly in the nest. We had seen Pride spending quite a bit of time deep down in the nest. Since they are biologic creatures they are not entirely predictable, but even in the very unlikely event that they did try to raise a family this late in the season, it would not fit the pattern they have evolved over the centuries. Generally eaglets will be hungriest just at time of maximum prey availability, which is just about now. Fish have not yet retreated to deeper and cooler water so the young eagles can more easily learn to hunt. Herons, Ibises and even rabbits and squirrels will be producing inexperienced youngsters. Heat stress will not be as severe as it would be for an eaglet hatching out in April or May. Their instinct is to fly north to seek cooler water by the end of summer-- this is especially true of the younger eagles. They simply would not be ready. I think the good news is that they appear to be well-bonded. They seem to spend the nights together, as they are often roosting on the Melaleucas at daybreak. Late afternoon sightings are also common. The proof will be if/when they return together next fall to get down to serious family matters!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MAR-5-12-30-PM-Pride-works-while-new-female-watches-td7574055.html","images":0},{"id":"7574062","topic":"7574055","order":6,"title":"Re: MAR 5, 12:30 PM: Pride works while new female watches","author":"tczig","date":"2015-03-11T15:00:41.673000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Thanks Ken! I believe an egg has hatched or is in process given the change in behavior by both adults. At 7:45 both adults were in the nest tending to something below the rim at their feet level. I have yet to see any food in the adults mouths, although motions lead me to believe they do have some in the nest. These motions and time spent with the beak in the nest as they stand indicates much more attention / activity than I have witnessed the last couple weeks. Previously an adult was down low in the nest except for short periods of a minute or less, or \"shift changes\" with the other adult. Today, the adults have not been down at all (for the entire 3 hours). Instead the female has been in the nest most of the time except for about 30 minutes sitting in the dead trees to the west. After watching the nest for this 30 minutes, the male was perched in the Australian Pine to the east and then after about an hour left the area heading south. Again, the entire time any adult has been in the nest, they have been very pre-occupied looking around, or looking down every once in a while in the nest. Note the picture of the two adults in the nest, one of them is straightening up \"house,\" moving a twig. Making better room for the little one I'm sure. Also notice mom giving me a \"fist\" pump while perched in the sun -- obviously a proud Mom. The newly hatched eaglet will be nourished by the yolk for another couple of days, so so not expect it to eat much, if anything. It will become hungry and will be fed tiny scraps at first. Your photos and the video provide excellent documentation. We dropped by around 3:05 PM and briefly watched one adult sitting higher on the nest, most likely brooding one chick and possibly still incubating one or more eggs. No other adult was in sight. Our grandchildren got bored rather quickly, as we had spent most of the day at the beach and they were tired. I took photos, but they so pale in comparison to yours! This is the second known active Bald Eagle nest in Broward County, but it has not yet been registered by FWC. Coincidentally, I received a call from a concerned birder early this morning. The latter said there had been a \"crowd\" of people walking right up to the bottom of the nest tree yesterday. I have not yet visited the area, but perhaps the cut in the fence is what allowed the spectators to get closer than permitted by FWC guidelines. Although the nest is actually on FDOT property just outside the park, I learned that the Park Naturalist is exercising stewardship by contacting the mountain bikers and asking them not to disturb the nest in any way. I do not know whether there are any warning signs to alert other visitors. The fence had been cut in order to provide ingress for the second eaglet, which had been grounded. We should expect both to remain in or close to the nest for the next couple weeks. Note that his story (below) mentioned that only one eaglet was now present in the area. I sent this e-mail to FWC early today: I got a call early this morning from someone who was very concerned about the lack of protection for the Bald Eagle nest in Quiet Waters Park, Deerfield Beach. I checked the FWC Eagle Nest Locator map and saw that it is not registered. He said that the nest is next to a bicycle path and that spectators are able to crowd around the nest tree right under it. He said the eagles appeared be disturbed by this. I think he said there is one nearly full-grown eaglet in the nest. If it is not flight-ready it could be startled and be in danger if it falls prematurely. He said he thought the nest is actually just outside the park boundary, perhaps on the Sawgrass Expwy or SW 10th Street right of way. Perhaps you are well aware of this situation. I said that if the bike path was there before the eagles built their nest it would be considered to be an \"existing disturbance,\" and not subject to restrictions. However there was no signage or educational material that would caution people not to leave the path or approach the nest. But within 100 yards of the rushing traffic stands a bald eagle nest with at least one chick, the second active nest known to exist in Broward County. The nest, established about eight months ago, stands just outside Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach, where lakes, trees and grassy areas provide fish, birds and small mammals on which the eagles can prey. The park's mountain bike trail runs right next to the nest. \"Nothing seems to bother them,\" said Nick Calabro, a rider from Delray Beach. \"We do trail maintenance. It's awesome. I was one of the first to spot them. 'There's a bald eagle out there!' 'You're crazy, it's an osprey.' And it turned out it was an eagle.\" The eagles' two chicks hatched several weeks ago but the female chick was seen on the ground a few days ago and hasn't been seen since. \"I tell you, I've been worried to death,\" said Bill Davis, of Deerfield Beach, another trail rider. Michelle van Deventer, bald eagle plan coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said the agency has not yet confirmed the new nest by an on-the-ground visit or aerial survey. Not all active eagle nests have been documented, she said. The county's other active bald eagle nest, occupied for at least seven years, stands just south of Pines Boulevard in western Pembroke Pines. A bald eagle nest survey has been taking place in 2013 and 2014 in Broward, Hendry and Palm Beach counties. It found four active nests in Palm Beach County so far and is not yet complete. Statewide there are more than 1,500 nests. A nest near the Turnpike may seem unusual but van Deventer explained that \"as the eagle population has grown alongside the human population, nests in what would have historically been considered unusual habitat has become more frequent. The common denominators for eagle nest territories are a tall structure to nest in, most frequently live native pine trees, and proximity to water for foraging.\" Thursday evening, the male chick could be seen venturing from the nest. Few non-experts would recognize it as a bald eagle, since the birds take more than four years to develop the characteristic white head and tail. This one appeared to be a very large black bird, mottled white under its wings, flying awkwardly from branch to branch. One of his parents flew nearby and perched on a tree near the nest. The adults tend to feed the chicks around 7 p.m., Davis said. \"I've seen them bring fish and rats or mice and also birds,\" he said. \"They just take it into the nest and rip it open.\" Ken Schneider, a birder who has been active in protecting the Pembroke Pines nest, said he was concerned that nest by the Turnpike was so close to the bike trail that people could crowd around it and disturb the eagles. He sent an email to the FWC on Friday describing the situation and noting, \"there was no signage or educational material that would caution people not to leave the path or approach the nest.\" dfleshler@tribune.com, 954-356-4535 Copyright © 2014, South Florida Sun-Sentinel","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sun-Sentinel-article-Bald-eagles-nesting-near-Turnpike-in-Deerfield-td7573502.html","images":0},{"id":"7575062","topic":"7575062","order":1,"title":"July 19, 20 and 21: Adults flying very early from nest area","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-07-23T13:34:21.214000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"Adult Bald Eagles appeared over west Miramar close to sunrise the next three days after the juvenile was sighted there. During the next 4-6 weeks they are expected to begin following their parents on fishing and hunting forays. By the time the cold weather arrives their proficiency should have improved to the point that they will strike out on their own. Depending upon the severity of the winter, they may move southward, joined by many more of their kind from the far northern reaches of the species' range, following along the Fox River to find open water, with many congregating downstream along the Illinois River to its confluence with the Mississippi River system. On May 18, one of the two eaglets was in the nest. It may have already fledged, but it is common for them return to the nest to be fed: The Bald Eagles that nested near our Florida home did not breed successfully this year. If they had, their young would just now be polishing their hunting skills in preparation for a migration in the opposite direction. As temperatures increase in the waters of Florida lakes, fish seek the cooler depths. Young eagles find it easier to see and catch fish in the cooler lakes and rivers to the north. Many move up the east coast to the Carolinas and the Chesapeake Bay area, and some have been tracked into the extreme northeastern US. You may recall that the original male of the the pair lost his mate in late October, 2014, and found a new companion in early December . Although they mated, their union did not produce any young. They seem to have bonded very well. Curiously, they both continue to work on the nest, adding and rearranging sticks. See the latest reports and photos of this behavior by Luis, a faithful eagle watcher, at THIS LINK (Photo ©2015 LuisEagles) <script src=\"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/embed/p7574122\"></script> We also are now heading the wrong way, flying back from Illinois to Florida, at least for a while, leaving what is left of the spring songbird migration behind us. Bad weather and lots of local travel and family events curtailed our time afield. Here are some photographic highlights of our stay in NE Illinois. At Nelson Lake/Dick Young Marsh Forest Preserve in nearby Batavia, the grass had turned green and the trees were leafing out by the middle of May: A notable sighting at Nelson Lake on May 9 was a single Bobolink, the first reported in the county this season: Bobolinks seem to have their plumage arranged the wrong way, as the undersides of most birds are lighter than their uppers. Posing on a fence post, the Bobolink demonstrates this feature very nicely: Yellow-rumped Warblers, early arrivals, were still moving through the treetops: Common Yellowthroats are already staking out nesting territories on the prairie: American Goldfinches, befitting their name, have molted into their brilliant breeding (alternate) plumage: Yellow Warblers offer a more subtle but no less beautiful shade: I find it easy to overdose on Yellow Warbler photos: This first year male Orchard Oriole will take on a brick-red coat by next season: An Eastern Meadowlark sings enthusiastically: A tad of yellow highlights the brow of a Savannah Sparrow: While not sporting feathers, this early Eastern Tiger Swallowtail fits the theme as it probes the dandelions for nectar: Indigo Buntings represent another primary color: The clouds part momentarily, to allow a \"blue-on-blue\" portrait: A Blue-gray Gnatcatcher incubates eggs in its expansible globular nest, fastened securely with spider webs and decorated with lichens: One of my most sought-after spring arrivals, a Scarlet Tanager some distance away, completes the color wheel: A Northern Cardinal also represents the red faction... ...as does a \"fractionally\" red Red-winged Blackbird... ...and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak: The older of our two Illinois granddaughters helps me spot orioles in the trees along the path at Hawk's Bluff Park in Batavia: She points out a moth she found on the car window, unwittingly giving me my only image of a reflection: The moth is a Hydriomena species, thanks to ID by Facebook friends: To her delight, we get good looks at several Baltimore Orioles: It is a bit surprising that I have not yet run out of my favorites for our Illinois stay, such as this Great Blue Heron on the shoals of the Fox River... ...a Swainson's Thrush... ...a Six-spotted Tiger Beetle... ...lots of flowers, such as this Wake Robin in full bloom... ...Nodding Onion... ...a Dandelion seed head... I must stop somewhere, but I want to show Tex some favorite fences, the \"good,\" which surrounds Hickory Knolls Discovery Center and borders the road to the correctional institution... ...and the \"bad,\" for those inside: We must end on an exuberant and happy note, to celebrate the birds... ...the bees... ...the bridges... ...and the brooks... ...the flowers... ...and the fields: ________________________________________________","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Reverse-Migration-BLOG-td7574125.html","images":41},{"id":"7572970","topic":"7572970","order":1,"title":"March 10 Eaglet eating white bird","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-03-12T07:01:32.622000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"Visited the nest at about 8:00 AM on Sunday, March 10 after being away in Illinois for four weeks. Its wings are somewhat pointed, unlike a vulture. Its wings are slightly at an \"M\" angle to the body rather than horizontal, like Ospreys, herons and gulls. An Osprey usually has more of an angle at its \"elbow.\" It could be a larger heron such as a Great Blue Heron, but neither long legs nor a neck are clearly visible in this out of focus view. Bottom line is that I am really not sure of its identity. The second bird gives us the advantage of color and full exposure of its profile. Phil had been there for about a half hour and also saw no evidence it was occupied. He said the eaglet was active on March 10th, stretching her wings. He also noted that there was still natal down under the \"wrist\" of her wing and that the flight feathers had not totally emerged. No branching or helicoptering noted to date. We were concerned that the nest was empty and the eaglet was not able to fly. Suddenly the female (Jewel) flew in from behind and the eaglet popped her head up. She did not bring prey or feed the eaglet, though we both have noted that the eaglet appeared to be able to pick at and eat food alone during the past week. After a few minutes the eaglet settled back out of sight and female remained on the nest. A close look at Jewel's beak showed some new markings. After you complete the form, first save it to disk-- but before saving , simply add today's month and day as MMDD. The form's filename already has the year 2010 at its end (before .pdf)-- the filename is EagleNestObservation2010.pdf So, this morning I added today's date and my initials to change the filename to: EagleNestObservation20100121KS.pdf Then I saved it into a folder that I named \"Completed Eagle Forms\" After saving it, I simply clicked on the e-mail button, selected my type of e-mail program (I use Thunderbird on my desktop-- alternatively I can use my Webmail account). Presto! Up pops an e-mail already addressed to Ms Kelly Smith with the renamed form attached. By renaming the form in this way, you avoid the possibility of over-writing your previous file that may have kept the original name. It will also help Ms Smith keep track of the submissions without danger of over-writing any previous ones. When I arrived Al and Trisha were already there and hadn't seen a thing. However at 4:45pm Justice was roosting on a branch way above the nest being harassed by mocking bird. I left to look for the Sandhill Crane off Sheridan street and I found them in a Field next to the Chapel Trail Preserve took a few photos and then returned to the eagle nest. I found Justice in the same location. At 6:46pm he flew off to the west and landed in the one maleleuca trees. The mocking bird harassment continued and he flew off to the east. I suspected he might go to the area around the gate that is used by the police to access the shooting range. I found him at the the next right turn at the end of 208 ave where he was at the top of a Pine Tree (west side of road)having trouble with his balance. Also to Justice's dismay it was now the grackles that were tormenting him he stayed there a while till he no longer could take it and flew west. I found him at the nest tree again on the same branch. I heard another eagle calling and then Justice flew off again to the west so I went to the maleleucas. I guess he landed on one of them because he was just flying off to the south when I got there. It was still sitting about mid way back in the maleleucas at 8:05pm, facing south with its back to us.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Thursday-td3029971.html","images":0},{"id":"3031144","topic":"3029971","order":3,"title":"Re: Thursday","author":"Snookster","date":"2009-06-05T11:48:49.603000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Trisha snookster is Smith not Mark","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Thursday-td3029971.html","images":0},{"id":"3032083","topic":"3029971","order":4,"title":"Re: Thursday","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-06-05T14:19:54.489000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"My bad, Smith. I'm really sorry! I just figured it was Mark since he stayed when we went to the boardwalk area and said he would post anything he saw. I do not think he brought in any sticks but it happened so fast that I cannot be sure: They both got back to work on the nest for a minute or two... ...but Pride then flew up to the nest support branch to the right: Jewel continued working on the nest until I departed: I think that the right side of the nest which fell down before the hurricane was not used to support the platform last year. They seem to have shifted the cup of the nest more around to the left (east) side of the tree trunk. The City has replaced the warning signs along the road. There is a temporary gravel path directly in front of the nest, running from the road to the FPL gate. Mary Lou and I stopped by between 12:30 and 1:00 PM today and found no eagles in the area. There remains the possibility that one could be sitting deep in the nest, but we saw no indication that this may be the case. Usually an incubating eagle will move about every 20-30 minutes to rearrange the eggs and maybe shift position, so everyone should be looking for such signs. I did talk to the bus driver who passes by and often must pull over near the roosting area to the west of the nest to keep on schedule and he said he has seen one adult there several times over the past week or so.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-in-Nest-12-9-2016-td7574620.html","images":0},{"id":"5953805","topic":"5953805","order":1,"title":"Pix of baby eagle-- 9 days old today","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-01-23T18:48:35.508000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"Eaglet waiting to be fed: Parent feeding eaglet: Heavily cropped image of eaglet being fed: \"Haven't you had enough already?\"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Pix-of-baby-eagle-9-days-old-today-td5953805.html","images":4},{"id":"5953828","topic":"5953805","order":2,"title":"Re: Pix of baby eagle-- 9 days old today","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2011-01-23T19:08:29.786000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"Great shots Ken - I can't wait to get back over there! Utility construction is anticipated to take place just in front of the nest this morning. Crews did not show up while I was there. When I arrived at the nest at about 8:30 AM the female (Jewel) was roosting on the nest support branch just in front of the nest. I checked usual roosts but found no other eagle present. The nest appeared to be empty. At 8:57 AM the male (Pride) flew in from behind the nest with an unidentified prey item. He left the prey in the nest and the female joined him and started eating. Pride then flew up to the same branch which had been occupied by Jewel. The female continued eating. Jewel then joined pride to roost on the right side of the nest They both then flew up to a perch above and just left (east) of the nest. They began calling and then copulated at 9:19 AM. Following this they roosted side by side. They remained in this position when I departed at around 10:00 AM. Definitely no eggs have been deposited as of this morning, and Jewel did not exhibit any \"broody\" behavior such as spending time deep in the nest. Street lights have been disabled over almost a mile long stretch of Pines Boulevard east of US-27. This presented a serious public safety hazard for pedestrians and bicyclists. The FPL workers replaced the defective switch early in the afternoon. Their biologist saw only one adult, roosting at the nest the entire time they worked. The job only took about one hour. Shawnlei Breeding, Audubon EagleWatch Program Manager wrote (NOV 26) Hello! I received the following update from FPL: “I am pleased to report that all work on the fuse box in close proximity to eagle nest BO002 has been completed without incident. As per our monitor, crews arrived around 11:10 this morning and all work was complete within one hour. Only one eagle was observed today, and it may have been that the second eagle was down in the nest. The eagle which was observed was seen perched on a branch above the nest and did not move the entire time that crews were on site. Thank you for your cooperation in facilitating this repair. It is greatly appreciated. “ Sounds like everything went off without a hitch!
