At first the female was on the nest sheltering and tending to the eaglets. The male was not around and the eaglets were hidden to the rear left side of the nest. The male arrived, not carrying prey, and the pair called back and forth. He briefly roosted on the horizontal perch above the nest and then flew in a circle around the nest. The male returned to the perch and continued resting there until we departed. In the meantime, the female began tearing at the large white bird that had been on the nest since yesterday. After eating quite a bit she started feeding the eaglets. The eaglets were hidden in the rear left portion of the nest, where the rim is also higher, so they remained out of view......until we finally caught sight of one.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Saw-one-eaglet-today-JAN-21-12-15-1-15PM-td7573356.html","images":11},{"id":"7573357","topic":"7573356","order":2,"title":"Re: Saw one eaglet today JAN 21 12:15-1:15PM","author":"Desiree","date":"2014-01-22T12:42:35.415000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"So beautiful! I was told that the people from \"Wildlife\" were responsible for it, so I am assuming that it was the FWC. Thank you! It was looking like any action would take months to implement. The restrictions include a fence along the entire edge of the forest as well as \"No Trespassing\" signs. A great addition as several people were witnessed entering and leaving from the wooded area. In addition, cones have been placed in the area that will limit the roadside parking to approximately 20 feet from the road (just a layman's estimate on the distance - hope I'm giving an accurate description!) I understand that there was some discussion with the FWC, who wanted to allow no parking/viewing from the south of Pines Blvd, but the Pembroke Pines police were concerned about the disappointment of the public, as well as the issues with the safety of parking on the north side of Pines Blvd. While I'm disappointed that the viewing on the south side was not eliminated, I am thrilled that the current limits are in place.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Fencing-at-nest-site-Thank-you-FWC-td2383686.html","images":0},{"id":"7574098","topic":"7574098","order":1,"title":"April 16, 2015","author":"Maria Rosa Drake","date":"2015-04-16T08:50:09.233000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Both eagles were at the malelauca trees this morning at 7am.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/April-16-2015-td7574098.html","images":0},{"id":"7574100","topic":"7574098","order":2,"title":"Re: April 16, 2015","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-04-16T11:16:38.418000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Interesting, Maria Rosa! It was about 1 mile SSE of the nest area. Then, an hour later I found an adult roosting on top of one of the electrical poles along the unpaved portion of Miramar Parkway, about 1.5 miles SE of the nest area. This one appears to the an early 5th year adult, as evidenced by dark tail and tail covert streaking and possibly a few dark head feathers. May be a female based upon very long halluxes and deep gape that extends more than 1/2 way under the eye. There is no way to say for certain that this is the same eagle I saw earlier or whether it is the new PP female. Mary Lou and I had seen this Osprey catch a fish in the large body of water in the Harbour Lakes mitigation preserve, but it was still too dark for photography. I did get a shot of the Osprey with its fish as we were headed back after our \"power walk\" in the wetlands near our home. Three times in the last couple of weeks, one of the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagles has appeared overhead shortly after sunrise, en route from the nest area to the largest lake in our Sunset Lakes subdivision. This morning we kept a sharp eye out for it, as it seems to fly earlier on clear days, probably because of better visibility for hunting. We were out before sunrise, which occurred at 7:18 AM, and sure enough, the eagle showed up at 7:38AM. I got ready to photograph it as it approached, but it suddenly veered our way and took a 180 degree turn. Within a second or so it went into a dive, right towards the old utility pole where the Osprey was dining. Since it had dropped so low out of sight, I had to run back and shoot through the high grass along the path, so my photos are not very good. It took me a minute to find the eagle, which was now chasing the Osprey far out over the lake. It took only two seconds for the eagle to close the distance between them. Note that their wing spans are almost the same-- the eagle is slightly nearer. Osprey wing span ranges between 50 to 71 inches, while Bald Eagles range between 71 to 90 inches. Our Florida eagles are smaller than average, and the male is smaller than the female, so it is likely that this is the male of the Pembroke Pines pair. Within five seconds, the Osprey dropped the fish, and the eagle doubled back to retrieve it. Now the Osprey turned and began chasing the eagle. They were low and out of range, but I saw the eagle ascend over the treetops as the Osprey backed off. Only 1 minute and 9 seconds have elapsed from the time I first saw the eagle overhead. This is the last in a sequence of nine photos. The Osprey flew back to roost on the pole, now without a fish. All this happened in the space of four minutes!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Wednesday-October-10-Just-after-sunrise-eagle-steals-fish-from-Osprey-td7572804.html","images":8},{"id":"7572805","topic":"7572804","order":2,"title":"Re: Wednesday, October 10-- Just after sunrise, eagle steals fish from Osprey","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2012-10-11T11:40:18.583000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"What a great event to happen upon!!! Only one eaglet was in the nest. It has few white feathers on its breast, and they coalesce in a spot on its chest. It definitely has less white than the older eaglet, so it is \"P Piney 8.\" The older chick disappeared some time between the afternoon of Wednesday, March 23, after we photographed both on the nest, and Friday, March 25, when Georgia noticed that one was missing. The older eaglet was between 67 and 69 days of age, just short of 10 weeks. The missing eaglet \"P Piney 7\" presumably hatched on January 15th, and was first seen seen branching on March 16th, at 60 days of age. In the previous two seasons, \"helicoptering\" (briefly hovering in the air a few inches to a foot above the nest) preceded first flights by about 15 and 8 days respectively. No one observed any helicoptering this season. The first observed branching preceded first flight by 8 days in 2009 and by only 2 days last season. However, this season, there were many days where no eaglet behavior was reported. As Georgia noted, fledging may occur any time after about 10 and before 12 weeks of age, and the chick appeared healthy, so it is very likely that she will be enticed by the adults to return to the nest when hungry enough, unless she was injured on her first flight. No adults were observed roosting anywhere within sight, until about 9:30 AM, when the male adult flew in low from the west, behind the nest, and dropped unidentified prey. He departed after only about 5 seconds and flew directly to roost in the usual spot on the Australian Pine along the road just east of the nest tree. He cleaned his beak and remained ther until we departed. At no time did we hear any vocalizing by the eaglets. In the previous seasons we did hear sounds from a grounded eaglet on a few occasions, especially when an adult brought food to the nest. Neither did we observe any signs of concern on the part of the adult. In the past we have seen them roost in adjacent trees and look down at an eaglet that had left the nest. We should be alert for any such behaviors during the next few days. Eagles can go several days without food, and downed eaglets usually are able to climb up on branches and eventually \"ladder\" up to the nest. I believe that FWC should be contacted if the eaglet is still unaccounted for by tomorrow, when it will have been missing 72 hours or more, FWC could conduct a search or authorize someone to check the area in the vicinity of the nest to see if the eaglet is alive and whether it may be in need of rehabilitation. I have updated the EAGLE MILESTONE SPREADSHEET GOOD NEWS: \"P Piney 7\" was back on the nest this evening. See the video and report on the FORUM next thread. Now, the Center for Biological Diversity is working to halt risky offshore drilling by ensuring that the oil industry can't skirt environmental laws. President Obama described the agency that oversees drilling as \"too cozy\" with the offshore-oil industry, yet the steps taken so far aren't enough to end dangerous drilling. The utter lack of environmental review during agency approvals of drilling plans is one sign of this chummy relationship, as is the systematic suppression of scientists' input and scientific reports. The fox is still guarding the henhouse. We need your help to tell our government that this lax oversight is inexcusable. Just as BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling plan escaped scrutiny, the official policy continues to exempt drilling plans from conducting any meaningful analysis of the risks and dangers of oil drilling. The president's Council for Environmental Quality is reviewing the policy that allows drilling to go forward without review, and you can help stop this practice. Sample letter: Subject: Offshore Oil Drilling Needs Environmental Review Dear President Obama, I am writing to urge the Council on Environmental Quality to protect our coasts and oceans through rigorous environmental review of offshore oil and gas activities throughout the United States. The conduct of the Minerals Management Service that preceded the April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion is shameful and will blight our nation's history and the environment. The use of the categorical exclusion process has been an ineffective tool for ensuring thorough environmental review of oil and gas activities. The oil and gas industry has had a free pass with respect to complying with the laws demanding protection of marine mammals, endangered species, and clean water. This can no longer continue, especially in light of the devastation in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. government has a responsibility to protect natural resources for the benefit of its citizens. The National Environmental Policy Act seeks to guarantee this protection through analyzing relevant environmental risks and allowing public participation. The use of categorical exclusions in the context of approvals for oil and gas activities eviscerates this law entirely. Please act now to end all use of categorical exclusions for oil and gas activities. Thank you for the opportunity to submit comments on this important review of the Minerals Management Service's policies, practices, and procedures. Thank you. Please take action by June 17, 2010. The male (Pride) was roosting high in the tree at Pines & 208th. Pride flew off to the north at 9:30 AM. The female (Jewel) was perched next to the nest, almost out of sight and no eaglets were visible at first. She scratched her head, revealing the very long hind toe and nail (hallux) which is characteristic of the female. Jewel then flew up to a slightly higher (but more visible) perch above the nest. Pride returned about 8 minutes later carrying some straw, but no prey item was visible. He landed on the nest and both eaglets started calling as if begging to be fed but they did not approach the adult. Pride seemed to ignore them and the eaglets kept to the opposite (right ) side of the nest. One eaglet is barely visible through the leaves: Jewel flew down next to the nest and then joined Pride, who then flew off at 9:40 AM. Pride then flew up to the top of a nearby tree just to the west of the nest, where he remained until I departed. Meanwhile, Jewel turned away and began feeding one of the eaglets with her back to the second one, which appeared to wait patiently. Then at about 9:55, Jewel turned around and started feeding the second eaglet. The other eaglet moved around next to the other but did not beg. The eaglet waited as the female tore at the prey item, but the eaglet seemed impatient and picked up a large part of the prey. The eaglet struggled to swallow the big morsel The eaglet shook and pumped its head up and down and when the adult tried to retrieve the food, the eaglet refused help and backed away, but worked to swallow the entire portion. The food disappeared down the eaglet's gullet. Its neck (crop?) looked quite distended Jewel went back to feeding the first eaglet behind the little glutton, which stopped begging. However, the second eaglet then picked up more food! She lifted her wing once and also raised her head (which is to the left), but I did not get photos of these events. She is certainly very high up on the rim. Our guess is that she had just been fed and was resting, but we should check on her welfare. I hope she is OK. Cannot get out there tomorrow. I am beginning to doubt that there is a second eaglet but could be wrong, so keep looking! I took about 60 photos but this was the highest position of the eaglet's head I could capture. She did rise up once so nearly the entire face could be seen but it was a binocular view. My 14-year-old son and I went together, so that I could show him what was going on with the eagles and so that he could help to fill out the form. He enjoyed himself, so I hope he will take an interest in this type of thing as he gets older. Anyways, there was an eagle in the nest facing east the entire time. It would turn its head to the west every once in a while, but it never got up or moved around in the nest. Since I never saw the other eagle, I could not identify the sex of the eagle in the nest. There was a moderate wind during this time which made the visibility of the nest difficult. The Australian Pine tree that the nest is in was swaying left to right, which made me think of Ken's comment about placing a nest cam on a stationary pole next to the nest. That would not be a good idea, in my opinion. The only other thing that stood out during our visit was an abundance of different types of finches flying around from tree to tree in the area between the street and the nest. Last year, the oldest chick became visible over the edge of the nest when she was 22 days old. It's a bit like fishing-- you just have to be patient. It's great to see that you were taking in all the other avian activity around the nest. When I birded my local \"patch\" the day before yesterday it was not \"birdy\" at all, but yet I found bobcat tracks and a fresh bobcat scat pile, as well as a beautiful Soldier butterfly and a Scarlet Skimmer dragonfly. Until I started my photography hobby almost two years ago, I paid little attention to such things. The little bird in your photo is an Eastern Phoebe, a type of flycatcher . They spend the winter here. Other small birds most common around the nest are Palm Warblers, occasional Yellow-rumped Warblers, and of course the blue jays and mockingbirds. Red-bellied Woodpeckers are often present, and there have been flocks of Cedar Waxwings and robins. A colony of Monk Parakeets nests in the light standard across the street from the eagle nest. A few wintering goldfinches have appeared at feeders in the area, but they are the only true \"finches\" you might encounter. You remind me of my grandmother, who called all little birds \"chippies.\" I'm just as bad, as I call sparrows \"LBJ's\" (little brown jobs), and all gulls \"seagulls,\" though a purist would say there is no such bird. I also had to learn that falcons aren't \"hawks,\" vultures aren't \"buzzards,\" and all blue birds aren't \"bluebirds.\" What's in a name? You might consider getting a field guide to the birds, as it may encourage your son to identify and learn more about them I recommend the latest (5th) edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America. There is a new NGS Eastern guide that I hear is also good. My interest in birding started with a tiny Reed's Guide that had colorful pictures. I was probably 5 or 6 years old. When I identified each bird I wrote a big \"SAW\" across its picture! wish I had kept it. I was inspired by my eldest daughters comment, “You know, Dad, one of the best things you ever did for me was to give me an appreciation of nature.” In my blog post \" Can Eagles Open Eyes?\" I wrote about how the presence of this nest has led many to take a deeper view of the natural world.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Saturday-January-30-2010-11-50am-to-12-20pm-td4487525.html","images":0},{"id":"4489654","topic":"4487525","order":3,"title":"Re: Eagles have opened our eyes","author":"vdelauz","date":"2010-01-31T10:16:18.939000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Ken, I know what you mean about patience. One of my favorite places to frequent for wildlife photography is the area directly around the old Chekika State Recreational Park in the Everglades. Sometimes, I don't see anything, which is perfectly okay with me because the time spent out there is like a mini-vacation for my mind. Other times, though, I end up with images that I never thought I'd get. Like you said, you just have to be patient. I literally laughed out loud when you said that I reminded you of your grandmother. I have to say that I am guilty as charged! I am TERRIBLE at identifying birds and, yes, any little tiny bird for me is (incorrectly) labeled as a finch. Sometimes, if I am fortunate enough to capture a good image, I try to research the name of the bird in question on a website called WhatBird (www.whatbird.com). I need to do as you've suggested and pick myself up an NGS Eastern Guide as I live here, but frequent the Great Smoky Mountains every year. A little side note: Up until last year, I didn't know what a Red-Shouldered hawk was. I thought that type of bird was always a Red-Tailed hawk. It was not until I watched a mating pair for weeks behind Lexus of Pembroke Pines that one of the technicians there pointed out the difference to me. It helped that his wife was an avid bird photographer and a lot of her knowledge spilled over to her husband. Finally, I'll leave you with an image of Roy, a male Lady Gouldian finch that showed up in my backyard. It's an interesting story of how our family ended up with Roy, but I guess I'll put that story up elsewhere on the forum. Here is Roy, before he gave himself up. In addition, I have always found it interesting to hear eagle-watchers' reports and photos of other wildlife sightings in and near the \"eagle forest.\" All too often, wildlife conservation focuses on the welfare of certain threatened and endangered species, while neglecting the whole web of life that sustains them. Creatures at the bottom of the food chain are vitally important to those at the top. \"Our\" eagles appear to forage for fish, reptiles and amphibians, birds and small mammals, over a territory that stretches out in a radius of several miles. Because of development and other disturbances, that territory contains many \"barren\" patches. The City of Pembroke Pines preserves (particularly Chapel Trail Nature Center, soon to be expanded to fill the entire eastern corner of Sheridan St. & 196th Avenue, and the new West Pines Soccer Center and Wildlife Preserve at 196th and Pines), the lakes, canals and mitigation wetlands, or \"Environmentally Sensitive Areas\" set aside by builders, the Stormwater Treatment Areas managed by the SW Florida Water Management District, and even the several landfills within a mile of the nest, all provide essential hunting grounds for eagles and other predators. I suggest that we try to document the biologic diversity of the habitat that was chosen by this pair of eagles, by continuing to post records and photos of other wildlife sightings within a couple of miles of the nest. To the extent that we demonstrate the diversity of wildlife that exists within (and in spite of) all the human disturbances, we are sending a message to our municipal leaders that their efforts to preserve natural habitat are bearing fruit and are to be encouraged. How do you all feel about this? Of course, when the resident eagles return in October to check out the nest, and as they refurbish it in preparation for egg-laying in December, we will naturally re-focus our attention on the reason why we all got so involved in this project. This leads me to another idea. I want to give some thought to describing how this singular event has made changes in my own appreciation, not only of the eagles, but of the wonders of the natural world and its importance to all of us. Maybe I will ask for a \"Roll Call\" so that everyone who has been involved, even casually or as a \"lurker\" on this FORUM, might (anonymously, if desired) express such thoughts and feelings. We might be described as a rag-tag, ad-hoc assemblage of people of all ages and walks of life, but we have joined in a cooperative effort and are seeing positive results. Ideas? Oh, and Nabble requires the FORUM to remain active, or it may remove support for it. (Their criteria are quite liberal-- I think they require at least one post every month or so, and they said they would notify me before they terminate it for inactivity).","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-conservation-is-about-more-than-eagles-td3043506.html","images":0},{"id":"3044310","topic":"3043506","order":2,"title":"Re: Eagle conservation is about more than eagles","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-06-08T13:21:28.878000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I was very happy to read your post, Ken. I have found myself taking pictures of grasshoppers, marsh rabbits and lots of other residents of the surrounding nest areas. The other day with Tom and Umberto, I drew the line at snakes...but if it's for the benefit of the eagles, I'll even attempt to get over my snake issues. Having watched the eagles for so long I miss the close study of their appearances and behaviors, always looking for any tiny development or change from one day to the next. Perhaps it was the dark blue sky and brisk wind out of the north bringing very clear, fresh air. The eagles were soaring around the nest area between feedings as much as I have ever seen them. I wonder if they were enjoying the weather as much as I was? At one time just over the nest area, but very high, was one of the eagles, a turkey vulture and an osprey soaring in a line. It was awesome being able to compare the 3 all together. One of the eagles flew very low over the road and gave some arriving watchers the thrill of a lifetime as it went right over their heads! I heard the chicks for the first time in the nest when the adults were both away. I was somewhat surprised that they sounded much like other baby birds....kind of a string of very rapid \"cheeps.\" The sound was nothing like when the adults are heard calling to each other. The other highlight was when 1 of the adults flew north and then circled back over the field across the highway to the northwest. We saw it circle very low and was out of sight for a few seconds and then came up and headed to the nest with a white bird in its talons. The adult stood very high on the front rim of the nest as it held the remains of the bird with its talons and pulled at feathers and strips of meat. The young were both right beside and grabbing the pieces from the adults beak as they were pulled off. One other thing we observed was that at times if both chicks were eating and no one was reaching out to take the food the adult would eat it. When the adult was finished with the dissection of the bird, it made our watching complete as it flew to a bough on the tall pine just to the right, along the fence line, to clean up after a messy meal. It was a perfect pose for the shutterbugs!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-watching-Monday-td2415441.html","images":0},{"id":"7572994","topic":"7572994","order":1,"title":"Merlins versus Crows but no eaglet at 9:00 AM March 28","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-03-28T15:33:56.526000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"This is the third day with no sign of the eaglet. We watched the empty nest from 9:00 - 9:45 AM today and heard no calls. The adult female was roosting on the Melaleuca snag west of the nest. Fish Crows were flying around the nest, possibly in search of left-over prey remains. Some of the crows also surrounded the roosting eagle and flew over her head, perhaps trying to distract her while the others checked out the nest. They waited until the eagle was preening and then flew down at her. Suddenly a Merlin made a dive at one of the crows. The crows fled together and sometimes chased after the Merlin, which was much faster and more maneuverable. Boldly, one of the crows tried to take over the Merlin's favorite roosting spot just west of the eagle nest. The Merlin counterattacked. Finally the crows relented and let the Merlin take his rightful place. The Merlin will soon migrate back to its home in the Arctic tundra. Just as we were leaving it suddenly dove into the Mahogany tree in the median and came out chasing a smaller bird, possibly a grackle. They disappeared to the south. Not all of our nesting eagles in Pinellas are back but quite a few have been spotted at favorite perching spots and near their natal territories. For Pinellas our current data/best count for nesting pairs in Pinellas County is 29 although that number does change from year to year. We have one pair to relocate as the nesting tree had to be removed and are wondering about the fate of one male bald eagle which left with possibly injury to his foot due to a fishing line and lure. Last year we had an August rescue of a sub-adult Bald Eagle in traffic in the Bay Pines area. An immature eagle was rescued at Brooker Creek Preserve and later released in the East Lake area. A bald eagle which had been rescued and released the previous year was photographed and nested for the first time. Productivity was a little bit lower than we'd like to see but this may be due to carrying capacity. Also last year, Honeymoon Island saw the first nesting pair in a very, very long time. A beautiful pair was also enjoyed by many at Cabbage Key and we are hoping to see them again this year. Local coordination of data has been enhanced and 100% of the nests in Pinellas County are being monitored by volunteers. Great job by everyone!!! I'll be forwarding photos one of our volunteers took of the release in Sarasota last week in a separate message. Another release will take place in Tallahassee and I will forward that information as well. Anyone who would like to do a tour of selected nests on Saturday, September 26th please email me barbibird@tampabay.rr.com. I can fit 5 or 6 people in my mini-van. We will meet at 8am at Starbucks on Ridgemoor Blvd. in the East Lake area. For any of you who have not seen this yet the Osprey Cam is up and running. www.DunedinOspreyCam.com . The City of Dunedin will be sending a press release about that soon. We will be looking for 4th and 5th grade teachers anywhere in Florida who would like to participate in monitoring the Ospreys. We expect the Ospreys to return to their nest in late September/early October time frame. Thanks, Barb Walker Palm Harbor, FL = = = = = FWC Press Release http://www.myfwc.com/NEWSROOM/09/statewide/News_09_X_EagleSnowbirds.htm News Release Bald eagles are returning to nesting areas in Florida and will soon begin nesting activities. The bald eagle represents a success story in Florida but is still protected from human activities. Bald eagles among first 'snowbirds' to arrive in Florida September 3, 2009 Contact: Patricia Behnke, 850-251-2130 The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has received reports of bald eagles returning to nesting territories throughout Florida the past few weeks. This majestic bird that calls Florida home during its nesting season has been flying back to former nesting sites from Duval to Collier counties, although no one reported nesting activity yet. The official start of the nesting season is Oct. 1. The FWC removed the bald eagle from the state's threatened species list in 2008 and at the same time implemented a bald eagle management plan with guidelines to help residents avoid causing a disturbance to nesting bald eagles. People should follow the management plan whenever activities or projects are being conducted within 660 feet of an eagle's nest when eagles are present. Bald eagles are protected from disturbance by the Florida Administrative Code, as well as two federal laws: the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. \"The bald eagle is a success story in the United States, particularly in Florida,\" said Ulgonda Kirkpatrick, bald eagle management plan coordinator. \"We went from 88 active nests in 1973 to more than 1,100 nests in 2007; that's a twelvefold increase in Florida.\" The FWC is committed to conserving the bald eagle. All known nesting territories are surveyed annually by aircraft to monitor nesting activity and reproduction, according to Kirkpatrick. In Florida, bald eagles may begin gathering materials for nests in late September or early October. They begin laying eggs as early as October and as late as April, with incubation lasting approximately 35 days. Once hatched, the fledglings begin flying from the nest at 11 weeks, but stay with their parents an additional four to 11 weeks. \"If everyone does their part to help conserve Florida's bald eagles, we will ensure that this magnificent species continues to flourish in Florida for generations to come,\" Kirkpatrick said. For more information on bald eagles and a copy of the management plan, go to MyFWC.com/Eagle. If you suspect there is a potential wildlife violation occurring, call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FWC-Press-release-Bald-eagles-are-returning-to-nesting-areas-in-Florida-and-will-soon-begin-nesting--td3577266.html","images":0},{"id":"3580572","topic":"3577266","order":2,"title":"Re: FWC Press release: Bald eagles are returning to nesting areas in Florida and will soon begin nesting activities.","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-09-04T11:14:01.523000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thanks to Barb for her update on the Bald Eagles elsewhere in the state....it's great to read encouraging reports. Audubon volunteers in Pinellas County say it's the time of year when bald eagles typically start returning to the Bay area. If all of the eagles they monitored last year return, there will be more than two-dozen nests in Pinellas County. Barb Walker, a volunteer with Audubon of Florida \"Eagle Watch,\" says official nesting season starts Oct. 1, but our area is already seeing some action. \"We've seen the eagles filtering in since mid August,\" Walker said. \"It's not unusual, but the number of eagles that have returned in mid August seems to be a little bit greater then in years past.\" Walker says about one-third of the eagles nest in cell towers. I am one of the Eaglewatch volunteers for this nest. I have been going at least once a week or more spending about 2 hours each visit. They have done some \"restorations\" in the beginning of the season to the nest they used last year out on the Sawgrass. I saw them mating twice the week of Thanksgiving and shortly after, she was very low in the nest for weeks. Wednesday, Jan. 8th I was there and one was perched above the nest, the other behind the nest tree. The one on the branch above the nest flew off and returned within 5 minutes with a fish. It went behind the nest for about 5 minutes and then returned to the nest with a probably 1/2 eaten fish. Then she appeared to be feeding eaglet(s) and then went back to perching above the nest. I went this last Wednesday, the 15th and didn't see any eagle on the nest or around it. One was in the tree behind the nest for about 45 minutes and then flew off, I waited another hour, but it didn't return. So I went again the next day, and saw no eagles at all. Another volunteer was watching from the campgrounds and saw nothing as well. So she came over and we decided to walk around the nest tree looking for any feathers, disturbance or eaglets and saw nothing. No eagles vocalized or came while we were there. I have a bike friend and he said he saw one on the nest today. So I went today and there was one sitting high on the nest, after 2 hours it flew off and returned in like 3 minutes with a fish. It went behind the nest and then perched not returning to the nest for the next 30 minutes when I left. So at this point, I'm not sure we have surviving eaglets or not because of the behaviors this week. I will continue to monitor and will update when I can confirm more. Could he have been incubating egg(s)? If female is lost after eggs are laid, males have been known to continue incubation duties but are almost always unsuccessful. Normally the pair exchanges incubation duties every 2-3 hours during the day and the female seems to sit on them at night. We must keep open the possibility that this may be happening but observers have missed the exchange. Or, is the male unaware that the female is gone and is still working on the nest? Interesting indeed!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Male-deep-on-nest-NOV-28-Interesting-td7573700.html","images":0},{"id":"7573703","topic":"7573700","order":4,"title":"Re: Male deep on nest NOV 28 -- Interesting!","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-11-28T13:38:29.931000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Kelly suggested: If the eagles build onto the sides of their nest each year, making it taller as they go, this may be the first year they are totally obscured from being seen from below. Maybe by comparing pictures of the nest, there would be a way to tell how much taller the nest has gotten. What a great answer that would be! It is certainly a possibility. So here are some comparisons over the past 6 years. Not all may be from the same angle or distance, but I do not see a significant difference. Some years the nest loses sticks-- once a big mass of nest material fell to the ground from the right side of the nest, but I do not remember when. I got my first DSLR camera in 2008, so I have no photos earlier than these. Judging from the relationship of the nest rim to the bend in the branch to the right in front of the nest, there has been little variance. However, the location of the nest cup has changed from year to year, and is probably a more significant factor. When it is on the far side of the nest the incubating adult is most difficult to see.
