Lou was there already and it took the 2 of us to piece together the action. One youngster was on or near the nest, flapping and calling as the adult flew in with food. The sibling was very close behind and barreled into the 2 birds on the nest. The adult made a hasty exit and flew to the pine above the wire to the right of the nest. It all happened very fast and their large wings seemed to fill the woods around the nest! Hope and Justice did the usual....Hope eating first while Justice watched. Justice must have been hungry as he was vocalizing loudly and trying forcefully to get himself within reach of the prey. He was somewhat successful as they both were eating within a few minutes. By 8:45 they both were down in the nest resting. At 9:25 I knew something was up as the juveniles began calling loudly and stood up in the nest. An adult made a quick drop of food and then flew back to the same perch in the pine as before and preened for about 10 minutes. It took off and flew straight northeast, crossing the highway. During this feeding, both siblings ate together and then Hope took off through the woods to the west and Justice picked at the food for a while and then settled back down on the nest. At 10:05 another food drop occurred with both siblings eating together (getting full maybe?) The adult returned to its previous preening location, where it remained until 10:35 when it took off in a straight NW direction. The siblings stood up side by side on the front of the nest after their snack and as I watched with the binoculars they were both looking up and moving their heads all around, always with exactly the same movements. When I tried to find what they were looking at I discovered it was 2 black vultures flying very low around the nest area just above the woods. They looked like spectators at a tennis match....it would have been an awesome video. Smith arrived at 11 am and said that an adult was perched in the dead trees so I went down to check it out. As I walked that way at 11:05, one of the youngsters left the nest and flew by, going my direction. The adult called to its young as it flew past towards the west. At 11:15 the adult flew from the dead tree, heading east and began a slow spiral as it climbed higher and higher. The other sibling remained on the back rim looking out so I couldn't tell which one it was. I hope Smith might know as I had to leave. It's hard to decide whether to stay at the nest or move to other roosting spots as there is a lot more action lately!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Thursday-morning-nest-watch-td2643228.html","images":0},{"id":"2643498","topic":"2643228","order":2,"title":"Re: Thursday morning nest watch","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-04-16T16:31:16.041000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Mary Lou and I got there about 11:30 AM, so we must have just missed both Trisha and Smith. The female was feeding the eaglets when we arrived: She flew off the nest after about 10 minutes and roosted in the melaleucas for the rest of the time we observed them. The chicks were up and alert for a minute or so, then rested down low in the nest. It's getting hard to tell the two largest apart-- I thought they were arranged (left to right) from oldest to youngest, but now I'm not sure. The middle appears taller, but the left one seems to have less down on its head. If the second is a female, she will be larger than an older male before fledging. I will use this photo on the name poll page unless someone comes up with a better one and will give me permission to post it there: Only about 5 minute later, the male adult (his brown feather tail tip was better seen on another photo) flew to the nest. Upon arriving, he either dropped the prey as he began to land, or saw that there was no food in the nest, as he never entered the nest and quickly dropped down and away. He returned only about 5 minutes later with prey: The youngest of the three eaglets, in foreground took quite a bit of food, while the other two appeared to have already eaten their fill: For the first time in over two years of watching this nest, we were delighted to have a Swallow-tailed Kite circle around the nest tree and then pass directly overhead before disappearing to the north:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Tuesday-March-3rd-Swallow-tailed-Kite-over-nest-td4661722.html","images":6},{"id":"4661919","topic":"4661722","order":2,"title":"Re: Tuesday, March 3rd - Swallow-tailed Kite over nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-03-02T11:25:48.795000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"The three new signs on the south side of Pines are a bit ambiguous. Better still, if some party might donate a few big orange water-filled barrels, and a plastic fence that could be strung along the edge of the shoulder of the road, this would separate the pedestrians from the roadway as well as from the eagles. Love was also in the air and I captured this obstructed, intimate moment. Phil The first egg is usually laid within 7-10 days after successful copulation. Sometimes the male will mount the female for several days before fertilization is achieved. They will also perform this action even after eggs or eaglets are present. This reinforces the pair bond. Emergency electrical work is necessary at the pole immediately in front of the nest. This is a matter of public safety as the street lights are out along a considerable stretch of Pines Boulevard, from SW 202nd Avenue all the way past the nest west to US-27. The work should not take too much time and I have recommended that the nest be monitored during the work. I recommended that it be completed ASAP. The female usually gets broody for a few days before laying the first egg and spends much time in the nest so we hope for as little disturbance as possible. Over the ten years we have been collecting data from this nest, the first egg was laid between December 5th and 18th. One year it was laid on January 3, but this followed a breeding season in which the first brood was lost and the parents brought up a second brood which kept them occupied tending an eaglet into September. For the nine \"normal\" breeding season the average date for the first egg was December 7 and the median date was December 11. View it at this link: SUMMARY OF KEY OBSERVATIONS DURING EACH BALD EAGLE BREEDING SEASON (2007-Present) During the prior three years We believe that the first egg was laid on December 13, 18 and 11. This year, based upon an undocumented observation, we believe that the female assumed and maintained an incubation position beginning on December 11, 2011. Two days later, on December 13, the nest appeared to be empty over a 15 minute period. The next day and again on December 16 the female was reported to be sitting very low in the nest. Based upon ground observations during the prior three years, the first egg hatched 35, 34 and 35 days after being laid. This year, on January 15, the adults exhibited a change in behavior that strongly suggested that the first egg had hatched. This was 35 days after the presumed day it was laid. In past seasons an eaglet was first seen from the ground at the age of 23, 18 and 7 days (average 16 days) respectively. This year it was sighted on day 18. Pre-flight branching (climbing out on branches in the nest tree) and \"helicoptering\" (hovering a few inches above the nest) was observed when the oldest eaglet was 69, 73 and 60 (average 67) days old , respectively. As of yesterday, March 20, the eaglet was presumably 65 days old and had not yet exhibited this behavior. This raises an interesting question. Is it possible that this year's eaglet is actually younger than we assume? Might it have been the product of the second or third egg that was laid, up to a week later than the first? It is possible that one or more of the other eggs was infertile or was destroyed. This year's eaglet also behaves differently than those in previous seasons. It tends to be rather passive. While it calls loudly to be fed, it assumes a subordinate posture once the adult arrives to feed it, crouching low in the nest. It also waits quietly while the adult tears off portions of prey. In past years, the older and larger eaglet competed vigorously to be fed. The younger nest-mate(s) generally stood by and sometimes the parent had to actively feed the younger chicks. We have even seen the parent block the older eaglet to prevent it from continuing to monopolize the meal. When the eaglets were nearly full grown (as is the case now), they would actually attack the parent when it brought in food, even causing it to simply drop the prey in the nest. In contrast, this year's eagle chick seems to wait until the food is cut up into small portions by the adult. We have seen it pick at prey, but then begin calling as if it needed to be fed. Our theory is that the lack of competition from siblings may be the cause for the submissive behavior of this eaglet. Further, based upon comparative developmental milestones, it may be as young as 57 days, rather than 65 days as we have assumed. These are only hypothetical assumptions, but we will be interested if other observers confirm or challenge them.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Why-is-there-only-one-eaglet-and-how-old-is-this-one-COMMENT-PLEASE-td7393290.html","images":0},{"id":"7393990","topic":"7393290","order":2,"title":"Re: Why is there only one eaglet, and how old is this one? Interesting! It is known that the young birds are more migratory than adults. The latter need to get back on territory to protect their \"property rights.\" As Brian Mealey has pointed out, the immature birds from far South Florida are less migratory and tend to just wander in the lower third of the Florida peninsula. Last year, a single bird showed up at the Pembroke Pines nest in early September, and one was seen carrying sticks to the nest on September 23. The first date that both adults were seen at the nest was September 27, 2009. (See the Eagle Milestone Spreadsheet ) Let's try to pinpoint the onset of nesting, courtship and mating activity, and also to record the behavior and interactions between the adults and any immature eagles that may appear in the nest area. I'm not an alarmist, but I will be very relieved when we get our first view of the fuzzy gray head above the rim of the nest. The smaller size of the male is very evident in these views. Both looked down into the nest but we did not see any eaglet. The adults interacted for several minutes. Of course eagles faces are \"frozen\"-- they cannot smile or frown, but their actions seemed to be expressive. Perhaps these are simply part of the recognition ritual, but they almost invite captions to describe what they may be communicating to each other: Jewel seemed to be reluctant to turn over duties, but finally she flew away and disappeared behind the nest to the east. The larger one briefly walked out on a main branch about 1-2 feet to right and above the nest. She flapped her wings a bit and returned. We can expect increased branching and \"helicoptering\" during the next two weeks or so, until they take their first free flights at about 12 weeks of age-- around the end of March or the first week of April. I took a short video (best if viewed full screen in HD. It was not a juvenile but rather appeared to be a second year bird or possibly even a two year old (third year) one, although I would have expected to see more white on its head if this were the case. It had much more extensive white on its body and underwing linings than a first year juvenile. It also appeared to have some yellow in its bill. The photos are poor because of the distance. I also saw adults on the mornings of July 16 and 17. On July 16 at 6:33 AM and then at 6:42 AM two adults flew over from the direction of the Pembroke Pines nest (about 1 1/2 mile to the NE). The male (Pride) appeared first: Jewel was noticeably larger and heavier: At 7:05 AM on July 17, Jewel appeared and flew low over my head. Problem was that I did not see her until she was flying away across the lake. Several minutes later it got up and a second adult flew to a branch above the nest, both calling. The nest adult flew off to the northwest and several minutes later the adult from the tree flew over the street and made a big circle, entering the nest from the east. The arriving adult spent most of its time standing and looking into the nest, no feeding. At 11:30, the other adult flew to a branch at the very top of the nest tree, circling in from behind and then across the road and spent some time preening. After a few minutes the adults began talking back and forth and then the adult in the nest flew off to the west and the original parent flew back down to the nest. At 11:50am there was another, very quick exchange, one in, one out. I believe the adult entering had a small prey item in one talon when it flew over us and began tearing at it and bending over quite low in the nest....as if feeding. No head(s) of the young were seen. The departing parent flew west through the nest woods and I lost sight. A car stopped and told us one of the adults was perched in the dead trees so we went down to see it and it was still there as I left. Several cars were there when I arrived, with passengers looking for the nest, so I was able to show it to them and answer most of their questions. They were 5 women from Boynton Beach who belong to the Shutterbug Camera Club so they were taking lots of shots! The light was quite dark and it kept drizzling, so I hope they got some pictures as amazing as the show put on by the eagles. They were having such a great time and so over joyed to see the eagles! One of the women is the manager at Green Cay and we were discussing ways to get donations for the nest, maybe with Green Cays help. We exchanged emails and Ken, and other eagle watchers, we can talk further. At first we could only see the male (Pride) roosting on the support branch just to the right (west) of the nest. It was difficult to get a good look at him through the pine needles. Suddenly the female (Jewel) rose up high and was clearly visible above the nest rim: Then, Pride started calling and Jewel called in unison and joined him to rest (nearest to the camera) next to him on the branch: We thought they might copulate (they may do this even when eggs are in the nest) but instead it was the ritual which they often follow when exchanging incubation duties. Pride then flew down to the nest to take over... ...and settled down out of sight: The first egg was probably deposited on Saturday, November 30 and incubation is expected to take 5 weeks (35 days), with the first egg expected to hatch around January 4th.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-7-Pair-exchanges-incubation-duties-td7575456.html","images":4},{"id":"7572863","topic":"7572863","order":1,"title":"DEC 21 Pair exchanges incubation duties (Photo sequence)","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2012-12-21T12:10:05.712000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"We arrived at the eagle nest just before 9:00 AM this morning. It was a cool 65 (F) and there was a steady wind in from the north, behind me. The female was incubating deep in the nest, the top of her head barely visible. Only about a minute later she started calling and the male flew in from behind the nest area and took a roost in a tree a short distance to the west (right) of the nest. They called to each other for a moment, then the male launched up and into the wind, passing in front of the nest, disappeared briefly behind the nest, then landed on the nest into the wind. The pair exchanged incubation duties, and the female promptly flew into the Melalaeuca snags to the west of the nest area. There, she preened for a while and was still there when we departed about 20 minutes later. The male is noticeabley smaller and slimmer, and his forehead is almost in line with the ridge (culmen) of his bill.
