I'm just hoping the road work doesn't chase them away. I've been talking to one of the bikers from Quiet Waters and he had been in contact with DOT and they were insistent that the nest was inside. I gave him Shawnlee's information from Eaglewatch and my pictures that clearly document them building the nest last season, fledging 2 eaglets, as well as this season. They finally agreed that there is an active nest. He said they had 4 other options and chose this one that cuts right across the eagles and that it would be in the next year. I spoke to someone in the QW office and he said 10 years away. They are putting all the big posts in on 10th though.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/We-have-an-eaglet-td7576688.html","images":0},{"id":"7576691","topic":"7576688","order":4,"title":"Re: We have an eaglet!","author":"Stylechick60","date":"2025-04-23T19:45:00.057000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Thank you so much for the beautiful photos and updated information on our eagles in the Quite Water area. I remember when they nested just below where the nest is now and it was a clear view. The second reading and adoption is scheduled for 9/21/10. From the City of Pembroke Pines Web site : SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND (Supporting documents for Agenda of August 18, 2010 City Commission meeting): 1. At the 4/21/2010 City Commission meeting, The Commission requested staff to prepare an information packet in their motion to pass Proposed Ordinance No. 2010-10 on first reading (2010-10 is now bifurcated into 2010-16ARA and 2010-17ARB Comprehensive Plan text amendments on this evening's agenda). 2. In the spring of 2008, a bald eagle nest was discovered on the City's Chambers plat property on the south side of Pines Boulevard, west of 208th Avenue. 3. In response to concerns of residents to protect the eagles as well as the residents who wanted to view the eagles and eaglets, the Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee was formed. The Steering Committee recommended the creation of an eagle protection ordinance based on many of the guidelines of the FWC management plan (see Exhibit 2). 4. The proposed policies in the Conservation Element (Proposed Ordinance No. 2010-17ARB) are recommended by the Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee and provide the foundation for the creation of an eagle protection ordinance (see exhibit 3). An update to Objective IV and the addition of Policies 4.24 though 4.27(highlighted in Exhibit 3) address this issue. 5. Attached for your information is an executive summary prepared by the Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Bald Eagle management plan. 6. Staff will present to Commission drafts of the proposed ordinance in the near future. = = = = = The entire document may be viewed at this link on the main Eagle Watch web page. Here are pertinent excerpts: Proposed Policies 1.4 and 4.27 have been added pursuant to House Bill 697 and are consistent with the Broward County Conservation Element's adopted policies. In addition, the City is proposing to modify Objective IV and add policies 4.24 through 4.26 providing for the preservation and protection of the city's Bald Eagle active Bald Eagle nest. Tables CE-1 and 2 have also been updated. In 2007, the City's first active Bald Eagle nest was identified and Proposed Policies 4.24 through 4.26 have been added to protect and preserve the nest as well as a provide the foundation for the adoption of an eagle sanctuary protection ordinance. OBJECTIVE IV Conserve, protect, maintain or improve native vegetative communities, wildlife habitats, wetlands, Bald Eagle nesting sites, and marine habitats through 2015 in accordance with Broward County and City of Pembroke Pines standards. Policy 4.24 - The City shall protect and preserve Bald Eagle nesting sites and promote educational programs for the residents by establishing a Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle Sanctuary Protection ordinance to be adopted no later than September 2011. Policy 4.25 - Identify, prioritize, and recommend alternative actions to control public access and coordinate with federal, state, regional, county and local agencies to explore safe parking options and viewing areas during nesting season. Policy 4.26 - Continue to coordinate with the Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee in the development of plans and in the identification of funding sources for sanctuary activities including the installation of a web cam, public education programs, signage, and research. ==== Of interest, the conservation policies contain an updated list of birds which have been sighted in Broward County regional parks. The specific parks in which sightings have taken place are noted.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Pembroke-Pines-City-Commission-acts-on-eagle-protection-policies-td5440992.html","images":0},{"id":"7575056","topic":"7575056","order":1,"title":"FP&L will be working near the nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-07-06T15:01:38.864000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"Florida Power and Light (FPL) must get ready for the hurricane season and remove hazardous trees near the power lines along Pines Boulevard. The FPL work plan is under review by both State FWC and Federal USFWS and should take place during the next week or so. Bald Eagles are supposed to be reported if found on the road dead. I found a dead bird in Delray heading to Wakodahatchee and thought it looked like an eagle, but it turned out to be a Mottled duck. She often reached down into the nest as if tending to an eaglet. I could not confirm feeding behavior as her head was often out of sight and none of my photos showed food in her beak. The next day, two observers were reported to have seen and photographed the top of a fuzzy white eaglet head. I went out at around 9:50 AM this morning (March 22) and watched the nest for a half hour, but the nest appeared unoccupied. This is unusual, as they nearly always stay on or near the nest when small eaglets are present. Possibly one of them was occupying a roost back out of our sight in the woodland which has a view of the nest. Luis had been there since 8:00 AM and earlier had seen both adults roosting in the tall tree at SW corner of Pines & 208th. He showed me his photo of the fuzzy head which moved in an out of view. Its beak and eyes were hidden below the rim of the nest. The male (Pride) flew over the nest at a great height and disappeared to the north. I hope you all have enjoyed your summer! We had a handful of late nests that hatched young in April and fledged in July so the season was a little longer than usual for some of us. And now many volunteers are reporting that their pairs are already back in their territories! The new season is almost upon us! But I’m ready, and I know you are too. J Over the summer I’ve been busy analyzing this season’s nesting data. Overall, it was another successful season for Florida’s eagles and the EagleWatch Program, which grew over 30% in both the number of nests monitored and the number of volunteers reporting data. I’m so proud of our team! All of the details and data will be in the EagleWatch Annual Report, which is scheduled to go out later in September. I’ve also been working on several fun improvements for the program for this fall, including an updated online Training Manual, a new home for the volunteer website, a more interactive and informative Nest Map and an improved format for the Nest Database. I’ve been able to add several capabilities to the Nest Database that you all have asked for, including the option to download an app on your smartphone or tablet to easily enter observations while at the nest. Or you may continue to enter observations on your computer from home via the database website. Soon I will be sending out important updates and instructions for accessing the new website, Nest Map and improved Nest Database. That email will go out to volunteers who submitted observations in the Nest Database last season, so please do keep an eye out for that important email. If you watch nests but have never used the database or if it’s been awhile, now is the perfect time to jump in! Please contact me at [email withheld] so I’ll know to include you in that database update email. I think you’ll be as excited as I am about how easy the improved database is to use. For those who actively monitored nests last season, I will assume you will continue to watch your same nest this season unless I hear from you. If you are no longer able to monitor your nests, please let me know so I may find another volunteer to watch them this season. As we finalize the improvements to the database, please temporarily hold off from entering any new observations into the current database. I will notify you when the upgrade is complete and we’re ready for observations again. I’ve begun scheduling Volunteer Trainings around the state in preparation for the 2018-2019 nesting season. All volunteers are invited to attend! I will be debuting the new map and database at the trainings, so you’ll have a chance to see them in action. Current locations include Vero Beach (9/16), Jacksonville (9/22), New Port Richey (9/29), Clearwater (9/30), Winter Haven (10/6), Sanford (10/7), Sebring (10/16), Jonathan Dickinson State Park (10/27) and Sarasota (11/4). To see times and locations and to register for a training, please visit http://www.eaglewatchflorida.org/training_registration.html . For the first time this season, I will also be offering a live webinar training for those who don’t live near one of the scheduled trainings or are unable to attend the training in their area. Stay tuned for that date and time as well! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me: [phone withheld]/[email withheld]. See the latest spreadsheet of milestones for each nesting season. Mary Lou and I visited the nest yesterday (twice) and today. Both times, we found an adult bird low in the nest. Yesterday, we saw an adult eagle carrying a large fish from Chapel Trail Nature Preserve in a westerly direction, a course which is north of the nest site, but we drove back to see if there was any more action (there was not). We had to wait quite a while to be sure we were indeed seeing the top of its head yesterday, though the photos clearly demonstrated that we had. As we arrived today the adult bird stood up and changed position, but my camera was not ready. I did just get the top of its head and one eye. No other adult eagles were seen either day. We also got photos of a Red-shouldered Hawk on the Melaleucas just west of the nest-- Yesterday, we also photographed a small raptor that was only about the size of a dove. I thought it looked like a Merlin, judging by its \"ice cream cone\" falcon shape (rather than the cylinndrical look of a Sharp-shinned Hawk). Sharpies usually do not sit out in the open like this, in my experience. Yet, when I looked at the photos, I really an not sure it was a Merlin. Note that it has a small prey bird, whose legs protrude to the right (my guess is that it is a Palm Warble, which has long legs). The whole time the raptor stood on only one foot, and it never turned around to show its breast pattern, which is not heavily streaked in this view, another argument against Merlin. The white spots on its back are interesting, though I do not know their significance. I agree with the consensus of others who have viewed this photo that it was a Sharp-shinned Hawk. The eye color of the bird in your photograph is yellowish, therefore it is a first year accipiter. Some of the ground observers (including me) thought we might be seeing an eaglet popping up right in front of Jewel. We were seeing the dark outline of her chest! No feeding was documented, though Jewel did put her head down into the nest several times. We presume that the first eaglet hatched 5-6 days ago, so the next one might also have hatched by now.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FEB-10-Pair-exchanges-broodinig-duties-td7574695.html","images":3},{"id":"7573135","topic":"7573135","order":1,"title":"Blog: A blighted birding patch (just SE of the eagle sanctuary)","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-10-21T13:18:42.433000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"As is evident to anyone who reads my posts, our recent birding has been carried out within fairly restricted boundaries. In Illinois, it was our now extinct and lamented \"back yard\" prairie ( Remembering birds in a vacant lot ) . In Florida, a convenient wetlands preserve adjacent to our subdivision is a scarred but welcome haven for resident and migratory species. Since moving to south Florida in 2004 I have recorded a respectable 126 bird species in this local tract. Most are documented among over 5,500 photos that may be viewed in this FLICKR set: West Miramar Water Conservation Area As happened with my Illinois \"back yard\" patch, this area is slated for massive development in the near future. This time it will not succumb to residential subdivisions or shopping centers. The mile-long stretch of gravel road that now provides access ([specific nest-location detail withheld] right of way) will be paved and become a four-lane high speed parkway, to connect two major highways, I-75 and US-27. Most of the wetlands will be surrounded by 13-15 foot levees and flooded to a depth of up to 4-5 feet to become a huge retention reservoir. We hope that some terrestrial habitat is included in the project, to mimic the hardwood hammocks of the original Everglades. The Harbour Lakes mitigation area with its two lakes will remain outside the new reservoir, but the roadway will run along its eastern and northern edges. This photo, which I took at sunrise just this past week, is the gravel right-of-way which will become the planned parkway. The very spot, where I stood to take this picture of an immature Great Blue Heron and Great Egret with an assemblage of Roseate Spoonbills and White Pelicans in the Harbour Lakes wetland, will be paved and busy with traffic. The high levee will run along this row of abandoned telephone poles, dashing hopes that they might serve as sites for Osprey nest platforms. The open wet prairie to the right of the photo is part of the Harbour Lakes mitigation area that will not be included in the impoundment and presumably will continue to be actively maintained as a preserve. Part of the US Army Corps of Engineers plan to restore sheet flow to the historic Everglades, the reservoir will serve to prevent diversion and seepage of rain water, which now flows in canals directly out of the Everglades to the ocean. The retained water will recharge the aquifer and keep salt water from intruding into the water table that supplies the residents and industries of the entire populated southeastern Florida peninsula. A system of pumps and waterways will regulate water flow, and biologic action in the standing water will remove agricultural pollutants such as phosphorus and nitrogen. As this map illustrates, the reservoir, outlined in red and designated by the US Army Corps of Engineers as \"Impoundment C-9,\" will be 3.5 miles from north to south, and up to 1.2 miles wide. To get an idea of the size of this project, US Highway 27 (Okeechobee Road), to the left, is about 5 miles west of Interstate I-75. At the northern edge, the small rectangular woodland that contains the Bald Eagle nest which we succeeded in having declared a sanctuary, will be spared. Much of the land to be inundated had been \"permanently\" set aside by developers to compensate for the damage done to the Everglades by construction of subdivisions. The dedicated preserve c onsists of agricultural fields that, in the early 1900s, were \"reclaimed\" from the Everglades by draining and filling. Under the mitigation plan, these lands were subsequently managed to become a water conservation area. Drainage ditches were blocked and low levees were constructed around its perimeter. Exotic vegetation was removed. Although isolated from the main Everglades preserve (which is west of US-27) it collected rain water during the summer and dried out in winter, loosely mimicking the ebb and flow of the historic wild lands. When we first came to Florida, the land was returning to a more natural state of wet prairie where Sawgrass and Spikerush flourished. With announcement of the C-9 project, all maintenance ceased and now the area designated for the reservoir is rapidly returning to a woodland populated by Australian Pine, Melaleuca, Brazilian Pepper and other invasive shrubs, grasses and vines. This is an example of one area that was a wet prairie only about 7 years ago. Now it is choked with shrubs. After it is flooded, upland species such as Bobcat, White-tailed Deer will be evicted. This Bobcat eyed our approach as it sat right in the middle of the gravel road... ...and an eight-point buck peered out from the edge of the road. Other upland species will lose their habitat, such as Raccoons... ...and Florida Box Turtles, both also captured as they ventured out on the roadway. Of course, when the project is completed, it should support a rich habitat for fish-eating species such as herons, Osprey and Bald Eagles. Tricolored Heron: Osprey: Bald Eagle with fish stolen from Osprey, on the Harbour Lakes mitigation area: In the meantime, recreational off-road vehicle drivers are having their way with the wetlands, as efforts to restore them have been abandoned. Supposedly, under state law, these lands held \"in perpetuity\" under deed restrictions and conservation easements will be replaced by \"similar\" acreage somewhere else in the State of Florida. Before, during wet season: Same location after visited by the all-terrain vehicles: Another example, on posted water conservation easement (note that the \"No Trespassing\" sign has been knocked over by the fun-seekers): </body> </html>","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Blog-A-blighted-birding-patch-just-SE-of-the-eagle-sanctuary-td7573135.html","images":15},{"id":"2960457","topic":"2960457","order":1,"title":"Siblings re-united Fri., 22 May 09, 7pm","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-05-22T21:54:15.799000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I arrived back at the nest at 4:30 pm when the skies had cleared. He changed positions and directions frequently. He flew back to the nest several times and stood there for a short time and then returned to the same perch. Finally at 6:10 he flew back to the nest and got down and rested. At 6:25 an adult made a fast food drop and then flew to the pine under the wires, left of the nest. Justice ate the small meal VERY quickly and then started calling loudly to the parent perched nearby. That did not seem to get the adults attention so Justice flew to the same branch and the adult took off to the maleleucas. Justice left shortly after and flew to the maleleucas, not near the adult, who was closer to US27. Justice was perched on a favorite dead tree just west of the woods, where he was joined by Hope at 7pm. In the latter case, be sure that the photo is JPG format. The address must end in \".jpg\" or it will not display. Be sure to \"resize\" the image, as the original may be larger than the size of the screen. Let the image \"float,\" which lets you decide where you might wish to place it if you are including text or captions. Post in the appropriate sub-forum. If you wish to have photos appear in your message, use the drop-down menu at the top of the \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" window. Select: \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" --> \"Insert Image\" --> choose either to upload from your computer or copy the image's address from the internet If you do choose the latter option, the display photo on many sites such as Facebook or Flicker etc may not be in JPG format, so you may need to click on it to view it in a separate window which may be JPG or provide options such as \"save image URL\" or format or size. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" Generally, the \"Large\" size option works fine, as it resizes the image to fit the screen. Also let the image \"float\" inside any text you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere in your message. Phil and Mary joined me a little after I arrived. It had rained most of the past two days into this morning. The female was drying her wings on a snag west of the nest. The male was never evident during the whole time, and no adult visited the nest. The two eaglets were active in the nest, sometimes appearing to compete with each other-- mostly jostling with no signs of lethal intent This is P Piney 12 (unless someone wants to give her a less prosaic name), the 12th known eaglet produced by this pair since we have been watching the nest, first hatched and presumed to be a female (there is a 2 out of 3 chance that the first hatched is female). She will be three weeks old tomorrow, FEB 1st. This is P Piney 13, who has a 2 out of three chance to be a male (FM, FF, and MM are respectively the most common gender sequences in successful Bald Eagle nests-- note that these combinations result in equal numbers of female and male progeny). He is probably 2-3 days younger than his big sister. Note that he has a greater amount of white natal down on his head and neck. A week from now both eaglets will probably show only a white tuft on top of their heads. The younger eaglet is on the left in this image. They interacted and appeared to be a bit competitive, with the older nestling asserting dominance. From the ground, Phil and I thought for a moment we might be seeing a third eaglet. This appears to be the wing of P Piney 13, as it still has quite a bit of down. However, we shoould keep a watch out as if there is a third eaglet it could be as much as a week younger than the first hatchling.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Friday-JAN-31-9-11-30-AM-no-adults-at-nest-td7573382.html","images":7},{"id":"7573383","topic":"7573382","order":2,"title":"Re: Friday JAN 31 9-11:30 AM no adults at nest","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2014-01-31T20:33:08.288000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Great pix of the youngsters, Ken! The eagle flew low, then swooped up to a roof two doors down. Note the dark tips to the tail feathers. Note some white feathers on its lower back and sides, as well as scattered on its wings. The bird's head appears totally white. It is probably 4 years old, as they usually have fully white head and tail by the time they are five years old. Recovery of the bald eagle population is arguably the greatest conservation success story in our nation’s history and a testament to wildlife law. However, pulling the population out from under the big stick of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) for the first time in nearly 40 years comes with an uncertain amount of risk. Within the Chesapeake Bay, 75% of all bald eagle pairs nest on private lands suggesting that the future of the population resides with the public. How private landowners would respond to the removal of ESA protections in the post-delisting era has been an open question of interest to the conservation community... ...The recent increase in cutting of nest trees may reflect a broader public misconception that nests are no longer protected following their delisting. We, the conservation community, need to be more effective in communicating landowner responsibilities under federal law. TIME LINE: DEC 7 - consensus of ground observers that eggs were present that day or maybe a day or two before, as exchange of incubation duties was witnessed several times. Expected hatch date (5 weeks) on or before JAN 4 DEC 24 - Adult carrying grass to nest JAN 2 - Incubation exchange; Male sitting high as if possibly \"tenting\" an eaglet, looking down. Female then also was sitting higher after exchange. JAN 4 & 10 -- High winds buffeted the nest and part of the right side appears to have fallen down. JAN 10 -- Both adults moving sticks, building up the rim. JAN 25 -- Adults \"copulated.\" It is not unusual for the male to mount the female outside the normal mating season, but might it be possible that she was fertile and receptive because the first brood was lost? There was a prey drop, usually a sign that eaglets are present, but was this a courtship \"gift\" which we has accompanied copulation in the past? Remember that this happened with the same female (Jewel) during the 2015-16 season. The nest was damaged and first brood lost around JAN 19, 2016. We thought they had abandoned the nest around JAN 28, 2016, but they reappeared the next day. Her second clutch of eggs was probably laid around FEB 10 and hatched MAR 16; the first eaglet was seen on MAR 31, 2016. (We usually see an eaglet by the time it is 2-2 1/2 weeks old). Since then, the adults have been sitting very deep in the nest and taking turns as if incubating and no prey drops have been noted. Phil shares my concerns-- He wrote (Feb 11) and provided this photo-- Hi Ken, I was out to the nest this morning for almost an hour, till 10:45. I observed Pride down low in the nest. He looked up once as if looking for his mate, than went back down in the nest and could not be seen... After today’s visit to the nest, I agree with you. I don’t think there are any Eaglets and they either have a second clutch or trying to have one. Trying to be objective and throwing away my wishful thinking, it appears doubtful, to me, there will be Eaglets this season. I have been reviewing my notes of past years and by this time we should have seen or heard babies. Also, the adults behavior and interactions are so very different than years past. I guess all we can do is watch and wait and see what plays out. Yes, Velinda there may be reason to be concerned. A problem is that not many people are reporting their observations. I hope more watchers find time to drop by the nest at various times of day. As you know, in past years they have laid the first egg as early as November 24 (today) and as late as December 18th. In prior years they were usually both reported during the weeks leading up to egg-laying. Please report any sightings, even negative results but especially if anyone sees both adults at the same time and their location. Bald Eagles that survive their dangerous first year are said to live 15 - 20 years in the wild, on average. This pair has been together at this nest for at least 8 years, and were already at least 5 years old when they started breeding. We do not know whether they may have been displaced from a different nest before moving to this one. Therefore they are at least 13 years old. I have read that if the female dies or disappears that the male will usually stay on the territory and try to attract another mate into the territory, while if the male is lost that the female will tend to seek out another mate and may even invade an existing breeding pair and try to take over. Let's hope nothing like that is going on here and that we simply have not had enough observations to be sure of their present status. At the time of hatching we have noted that the female begins to brood higher up in the nest, tenting the chicks under her body and wings. We also have seen the other parent visit the nest and peer down into it. Of course the best indication is when prey is brought to the nest and is fed to the eaglets, still out of sight. The parents will continue to take turns brooding the young, just as they do during incubation. The female tends to spend the night on the nest while the male takes a position near the nest. We estimated the date of egg laying based upon two observations. On November 25 Jill reported that the female was sitting rather high on the nest but later disappeared, possibly deep into the nest. On November 29, we reported that at 8:45 and 10:30 AM one adult was sitting very deep in nest, incubating. We therefore estimated that the first egg was laid between NOV 25 & 29. Arbitrarily, we estimated the eggs were laid on or about November 27, meaning that the expected hatch date for first egg would be 35 days later, or approximately JAN 01 2013. We last observed an adult incubating deep in the nest on December 27, when we also saw an exchange of incubation duties. Mike documented that the male visited the nest on December 29 but did not exchange incubation duties. He thought it possible that the mate made a prey drop, but he did not see any prey to confirm this. We have never witnessed any prey drops during incubation, as the adults appear to forage for themselves after exchanging incubation duties. If there was indeed a prey drop, this would be an indication that there was one or more eaglets in the nest back on December 29. Today we noted a distinct change in the behavior of the pair of Bald Eagles. This morning we found the female continuously sitting high on the nest, changing position and looking down into the nest. The male flew in and roosted on the horizontal branch above the nest . The male kept looking down into the nest. They called to each other, then the male flew out and around the back of the nest tree and landed on the right side of the nest. After a minute or so the female flew up to a nearby branch and the pair called to each other. She then flew over to roost in an Australian Pine to the east of the nest. There, she preened and then flew off. This activity strongly suggests that one or more of the eggs has hatched. We will keep a close eye on them to see if any prey is brought in and there is any evidence of feeding. A few Black Vultures circled the nest tree, suggesting that they may smell prey remains. This is interesting as well, as it could mean the first egg hatched around or before the time of Mike's observation and photos. The problem is that the dead end of the road is posted and Miramar prohibits on-street parking. Police patrol inside the area at times, but have (so far) been friendly to pedestrians. Some people park along the fence, being careful not to block the gate, but I'm not sure it is legal. I simply walk in legally on Sunset Lakes HOA property, as I am a resident. I've never tried to access the area by way of the eastern end of Pembroke Road, off US-27, but this may only lead to the west side of the Harbour Lakes ESL-- there seems to be no trail to the east from there. I've only seen fishermen use that area. Access from the north on 198th Avenue is blocked by water, a fence and private property. A couple of planned changes will impact the area, depending upon availability of public funds. The first will be completion of the extension of Miramar Parkway, which will curve north and become 196th Ave, joining up with Pembroke Road and US-27 (but probably not directly north to join Pines Boulevard). This will change access to the ESLs, for better or for worse. It will also turn Miramar Parkway into another main artery to connect the area west of I-75 with US-27. The other is a CERP (Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Program) project to create two new Broward County Water Conservaion Area impoundments (C-11 and C-9) along US-27. C-11, in western Weston is scheduled to be completed first. C-9 will include the SFWMD lands south of the eagle nest, west of Miramar and possibly much or all of the Sunset Lakes and Harbour Lakes ESL's. Dikes would be increased in height to about 12 feet, and the entire area could become a huge lake with up to 4 or 6 feet of water, functioning as a STA to block seepage to the east and help in flood control, as well as settle out phosphates to purify the water for release into the Everglades sheet flow. Of course, the entire character of the area would thereby be changed drastically. I'm not sure of the exact boundaries of C-9. A SFWMD representative will provide the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee with a briefing at our next meeting at the end of this month. Minutes of the meetings are available at links on the Eagle Nest Watch main page.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bobcats-and-Cottonmouth-to-south-of-Eagle-nest-td4395815.html","images":0},{"id":"4404209","topic":"4395815","order":5,"title":"Re: Access to \"West Miramar ESL\"","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-01-16T08:31:45.474000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I received this e-mail that raises an interesting question. Please recognize the limits of my understanding of the CERP projects. If any reader can correct or elaborate upon my comments, please do. Ken Hi Ken, I wanted to comment on your response about access to sunset lakes ESL. I too am a sunset lake resident. I bought a beautiful home overlooking the everglades preserve on 195th terrace when I moved down from DC last year.. Now I was told by the county that there would be no further development near or around me. I'm not sure I wouldn't mind seeing a road push thru the dead end of miramar parkway to connect to 27 (since my office is in Doral and I fly out of MIA constantly); I'm more concerned about this CERP you mention. I was told that I didn't even need flood insurance. You description, should this go through, sounds like I may have water in my house whether I like it or not. Might you have a web link to updated information on this project. I guess I shouldn't put off getting flood insurance even though my property was deemed high enough. thanks, L-- Hi, L-- As I understand it, the main purpose of CERP is to restore sheet flow of clean fresh water to the historic Everglades, at least to the 1/3 to 1/2 of what is left of the \"River of Grass.\" To do this, many of the ditches and canals that were dug in the middle of the last century to \"reclaim\" the land for agriculture and development must now be undone. Aside from the adverse aesthetic and ecological effects, this drainage system also wasted rainwater into the ocean rather than allowing it to recharge our aquifer, which is the source of our drinking water. To control the water flow, CERP is constructing a system of water preservation reservoirs or impoundments. These trap rain water and release it more predictably, actually reducing the threat of flooding in developed land to the east, such as Sunset Lakes. The planned local C-11 and C-9 impoundments will require levees that are higher than those that you can see along the west side of the 196th Avenue canal (An example of the higher levees are those along the west side of US-27). They will actually serve as part of the system of Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) that remove excess phosphorus from the water before releasing it to the sheet flow. The phosphorus comes mostly from fertilizer used in agriculture, especially sugar cane cultivation, as well as mining. Healthy Everglades water is normally very poor in nutrients, and the phosphorus helps cattails and exotic plants to replace the Sawgrass. The native plants evolved in the nutrient-poor ecosystem, and are unable to compete with the well-fed invaders. So, the bottom line is that our flood threat would actually be diminished by CERP activities. However, we also did not need flood insurance, but bought it anyway. We almost needed it during Hurricane Wilma, when palm fronds accumulated in the streets at the height of the storm, and blocked the storm drainage right in front of our house. The water rose almost to our front door before a neighbor ran out with a rake and unblocked the grating. Having both flood and general homeowners policies avoids the finger-pointing when there is a question about which policy covers water damage of any kind. Since we are above the flood zone, it is not all that expensive for the peace of mind that flood coverage provides. Besides, though our lake did not rise that much with Wilma, a 100 year flood could hit any time. I hope that the SFWMD presentation will provide us with a more specific timeline and also a more exact understanding of the topography of the C-11 and C-9 projects. If you Google \"CERP\" and \"SFWMD\" you will obtain lots of information, but so far I have not found a clear map of the boundaries of the planned local impoundments. Start here: http://www.evergladesplan.org/index.aspx Since these activities will impact the foraging areas of the local eagles, the Steering Committee has a vital interest in them, and we will keep everyone informed as information is obtained, hopefully in plain English-- I have toruble cutting through the plethora of acronyms. I still don't know what the \"C\" stands for in the numbering system for the water conservation projects! When I arrived I saw Justice, the younger chick standing on the favored perch of the larger chick. Other watchers told me that the chick had not been fed by either adult since they arrived at 730 am. At 1045am one of the adults flew in from the east, and circled behind the nest and back around to eventually land and give the chick a small white bird. The adult flew to the stand of dead trees and landed on the favorite tree to perch for a few minutes then flew north overtop of the houses across the street. Justice spent the next little while trying his wings and sitting on the favored perch watching the world go by. At 1135 another adult flew up with more food, I am sure by now Justice thinks he is the luckiest bird, either that or he is wondering where he is going to put all this food. The adult who brought the food then flew to the pine tree just east of the nest and was there when I left at 1210. At sometime between 1130 and 1200 the other parent came to the nest with yet more food. I did not see exactly what time as I was standing at the dead tree stand trying to hear or see the chick that fell. I thought that I did hear the chick when the adults were calling to the chick in the nest and it did sound like it was to the right of where one of the parents like to perch and back a ways. Both parents were still there when I left. I get the feeling that it won't be long before Justin tries his wings, he just has that look about him that he wants to fly. I sure hope he fares better than his sibling. I wonder if FWC would go and chick again? only a broader search, or if some of us could get permission along with a bird specialist. Just a thought. As I watched the Adult in the dead tree stand I saw him/her looking down several times, but did not hear any sound. Then the bird spent much of the time looking into the distance in a southerly direction. Then was preening when I left at 1210.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/My-watch-Sunday-930-to-1210-td2589353.html","images":1},{"id":"2590602","topic":"2589353","order":2,"title":"Re: My watch Sunday 930 to 1210","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-04-05T19:44:20.264000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thanks for your picture and post Kat...even though I was there part of your time, I wasn't aware of so much going on and the right times that everything happened. The oldest chick is about 29 days old. We have only seen one eaglet so far, and today was no exception. When we arrived, the female was on the nest and roosting high, which we think meant that she was expecting a food drop. After about 25 minutes an Osprey flew low over the nest. Still no sign of any eaglets. After watching about 50 minutes, we were ready to quit when the male flew in from the back of the nest with unidentified prey. The male then roosted on the tall pine just west of the nest while the female tore at the prey and fed the young. I was busy photographing the roosting eagle when Mary Lou got a good look at the eaglet, quite high above the nest rim. I only got a few shots of the top of its head. Again, only one chick was evident. Here is another view. While the male was still roosting, an unusual raptor showed up in a flock of Black Vultures that were circling above the nest tree. Its very dark and heavy body, pointed and slightly uplifted wing tips, bulging secondary flight feathers that gave a rounded look to the trailing edge of the mid-wings, plus a sharp narrowing of the wings near the body suggested it was a buteo, probably a dark morph of the Short-tailed Hawk. I could not confirm the ID until I looked at the rather poor and distant images on the computer. They showed a bright yellow cere and light areas at the base of the outer primaries, consistent with Short-tailed hawk. This was the first time I've seen this species over the nest, though it does occur in the wetlands near our home about 1 1/2 miles to the SE.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Only-one-eaglet-seen-this-morning-Short-tailed-Hawk-over-nest-td7270992.html","images":7}]
