My name is Shawnlei Breeding and I am the new EagleWatch Program Coordinator. Reinier Munguia has done an amazing job as the interim coordinator this past year, and I am so grateful for all of his hard work and enhancements to our program! He has been training me to get me up to speed quickly, so I thank you for your patience as I learn the processes. The Bald Eagle breeding season is here, and many of you are eager to visit your nest(s) to check on your eagles. This is a very exciting moment for all EagleWatch volunteers and I want to take the opportunity to remind you of a few simple rules: 1. EagleWatch volunteers are citizen scientists that collect data on breeding eagles. This data is very important to evaluate reproductive success and trends of the eagle population in Florida. If for any reason you're unable to monitor your nest(s) this season, or have to stop some time during the season please let us know by sending an email to [email withheld] so I can assign another volunteer to cover your nest. 2. Always keep the minimum safe distance (330') from the nest when doing your observations, especially on isolated nests that have little exposure to human activities. 3. Always use the best practices and educate others on the proper conduct near a nest. If you ever have to warn anybody about the proper conduct; do it in a polite manner. 4. Obey all no trespassing signs and rules set by landowners. 5. Reduce the impact on the nesting birds. Some critical nests may only tolerate one visit every other week. If more than one volunteer is monitoring the same nest, keep contact with the other volunteer to avoid multiple visits during the same week. 6. EagleWatchers should always follow the EagleWatch Etiquette that can be downloaded at: http://eaglewatchflorida.org/pdfs/EagleWatchEtiquette.pdf 7. Reinier Munguia will continue to be involved with injured eagle rescues and nest site violations. For after-hours assistance with these matters, you may contact him via his cell phone at [phone withheld]. Below you will find a link to download a copy of the new EagleWatch Training Manual. Please take your time to review it. Audubon EagleWatch Training Manual: http://eaglewatchflorida.org/pdfs/EagleWatch%20Training%20Manua%20v3-2016.pdf Nest observations are now being entered via the online nest data portal at http://eaglewatchflorida.org/ . Additional instructions on how to use this feature and can be found on the data portal website. If you experience any issues accessing or using the system, don't hesitate to contact me . Your use of the online data portal is the most efficient and immediate way for us to track the status of Bald Eagle nests in FL, so I thank you in advance for using the data portal to enter your observations. Thank you for caring and taking time out of your busy schedules to help monitor nests. I look forward to seeing your data entries come through the portal and working together to protect Bald Eagles! Sincerely, Shawnlei Breeding","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Message-from-Shawnlei-Breeding-the-new-Florida-Audubon-EagleWatch-Program-Coordinator-td7574587.html","images":0},{"id":"2546433","topic":"2546433","order":1,"title":"Observers needed: Saturday thru Wednesday","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-03-27T16:13:12.976000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Please indicate in a reply to this message, the hours (in on hour or greater increments) that you can observe the nest. I also see them coming home at sundown to sleep. So there is no doubt that this is the new nest location. Here is a few shots from yesterday. Some of the pics (in the nest) are soft because it is very hard to get good shots because of the 520 feet distance from the closest place (The Beach) to get pictures. Also I tried to do the boat rental and it wasn't much help because of the high angle to the nest from the water. I see that when people go out to the island to see them by boat they are trying to get close enough to get a picture with their phones and breaking the 330 feet rule. I hope this doesn't disturb them too much. I think the best pics and observation areas are going to be behind the Woofing Waters park by the beach where they have a canoe rack. It's pretty far away but it doesn't disturb them and with binoculars you can see them good. I also took some pics with my lens set at 300mm and they were pretty good too. It is said that if a male is lost that the female tends to abandon the nest territory in search of a mate. An unattached male will try to attract a female into his territory. Of course, anything is possible in nature. The brown markings on the tail feathers of the male were noted for three nesting seasons. Last season they were not present. Somehow they persisted through at least two molts. They were noted in 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 breeding seasons. Your inquiry led me to review my old photos. We thought it could be a sign that the bird was barely 5 years old when they first nested in 2007-2008, as they may breed when there are still some brown feathers on their head and tail. However, this is not borne out by my very first photos of the pair when they courted and copulated on the roof of a home across the lake from us in Miramar. These poor shots do not seem to show any tail markings back in November, 2007: The male is above the female: This is the male: I shot this one of the male a year later, in November, 2008. It is hard to tell about the tail markings: I think this one is the male, also in November, 2008. It does seem to have dark tail markings: Here is the male later in the same breeding season, in February, 2009, showing definite dark marks in his tail: Here is the male in December, 2009, when we named him \"Brown Spot\": In February, 2010, the brown right outer tail feather was clearly evident: The next season, in November 2010 there was a hint of brown markings in the male's tail: In January, 2011, some observers said they saw a brown spot and this was as close as I came to confirming its presence: During last season (2011-12) the dark tail spots were never reported. I didn't see anything new or anything that hasn't been described before. When I arrived, the young were both sitting up on the left nest and then both got down side by side on the same left nest area. They remained down until 3 pm when a small fish was brought in. The adult stayed for about 10 minutes, pulling and tearing and also eating. The smaller chick watched and waited for a few minutes before eating. After the meal they seemed more energetic and there was a small amount of nest only flying practice....mainly by the larger chick. Then they both quickly dropped down in the nest and remained for almost the rest of my stay. At about 5 pm there was a more active period of moving in circles around the nest rim and some cross nest flying and hopping. This was also short-lived and they were back resting. Perhaps the babies are being affected by the first really hot weather I've experienced at the nest. Hopefully they will adjust quickly so their flight education will proceed on schedule. The best happening of the day was on my way home when I was northbound just south of Weston on US27. A bald eagle flying very fast in a southeasterly direction came right into my view and passed high over the roof of my car. At 5:58, an adult flew in with a BIG meal. Both chicks chowed down at the same time and there wasn't any conflict at all. Bald eagles seem to strike a chord in all of us, especially this time of year. \"I pretty much want to stop my car and watch,\" said Kyle Roman of Lakeland. \"They're God's creation,\" offered Josea Rouse. But someone just shot and killed a bald eagle. Its body was found next to a cell tower on Rifle Range Road, off State Road 60, just west of Lake Wales. Bald eagles used to be considered endangered. They are not anymore because their population has rebounded, but they are still protected. That means you could face fines and even jail time if you are convicted of killing one. \"Unfortunately there are a lot of people who think, because eagles have come off the endangered species list, that they're not protected. That's not so,\" stated Florida Fish and Wildlife's Gary Morse. Wildlife officials say the number of bald eagles killed each year is going up. It's following another unsettling trend. \"We are also seeing an increase in other birds of prey and wading birds being shot,\" continued Morse. They're not sure why so many are being killed. It's hard to explain even just one. \"[It's] the United States of America, the symbol of freedom,\" stated James Hosegood, a veteran. If anyone has information about the eagle, they can call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at [phone withheld]. There is a $250 reward that is expected to grow. Smith and Al said that in the morning both young were on the nest seemingly picking at or eating something. One adult had been to the nest earlier. The adult and Hope took turns separately sitting in the favored perch left of the nest. This always affords the photographers great shot opportunities, especially takeoffs and landings. One problem with this location now is the attack of the grackles. There were always 2 or 3 diving whoever was perched there. The eagles were annoyed but remained and eventually the attackers moved on. (Occasionally they were even diving them as the eagles flew in the area) When I arrived around 8:45 the nest was empty but within a half hour I spotted the siblings flying quite high over the dead trees to the right. They flew around for a long time and gave us a great airshow as they flew around the nest and soared above our heads. Hope flew back to the tall left pine and Justice just kept flying. He was soon joined by an adult and they really put on an airshow high to the right of the nest. This show was full of stunts....lots of twisting and diving each other and really interactive flying. We hated for it to end! I left about 11:30 as Justice was the only eagle barely visible way back in the dead trees to the right. One thing of note is that we had ample opportunity to compare the color variations in the siblings. Hope has really filled in with a lot white(not head and tail) and many shades from light to dark of brown feathers. I \"hope\" to post soon(?) some of the flight shots of Hope...her color pattern is beautiful. Justice is much darker brown...more uniform in shading and appears very smooth and sleek. I have read elsewhere that females have a ruffled look, even in the adults. This holds true with our family, as I have noticed that the white head of our female is puffier than the male and she seems to often spend more time preening and pulling at her feathers (are we surprised?) I really miss seeing Ken and Mary Lou at the nest...we feel \"leaderless.\" I hope you all are well and enjoying family and being in your northern home.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Thursday-a-day-of-flight-practice-td2692152.html","images":0},{"id":"2700968","topic":"2692152","order":2,"title":"Re: Thursday a day of flight practice...","author":"Jill W","date":"2009-04-24T20:54:54.198000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Great report, Trisha! We feel almost as if we are still there. How great it would have been to see the interactive flights of the siblings. Your description of the plumage and profile differences between the siblings is very interesting. Justice's breast seems to have been darker overall from the beginning. We have noticed that the adult female does appear more \"ruffled\" and has a more prominent bulge in her lower abdominal area. That and the thicker base to her bill, that makes it look stubbier than the narrow bill of the male, along with her larger size, are often quite distinctive. I should say that Ed took fairly comparable photos of both adults so that I could calculate their ratios of bill length to width at base, but I found that both of his female shots had the lesser ratio (thicker base), but so did one of the two male photos! Maybe the photos were not exactly at the same angle, or maybe our eyes are better at noticing the subtle difference. To me, the male's forehead seems more in line with the top of the bill than the female's which gives her the look of having more of a \"forehead.\" We'll have to see if this is a useful distinction-- maybe next year! It will be very interesting to know at what point the adults stop bringing food to the nest, and also when the young birds stop coming to the nest at night. Once all the information is in, I plan to edit the PowerPoint slides and add narrative information to describe the entire life cycle from nest building to departure of the family. Our Pembroke Pines Eagle Watch Forum has grown quite rapidly. It now contains over 300 Topic threads, many with several follow-up posts, and has attracted more than 55,000 views. The Forum started out simply as a tool for eagle watchers to report happenings at the nest and coordinate their schedules to provide better on-site coverage and interpretation during times of peak visitation of the nest site. It evolved to include a wide range of interesting topics, mostly relating to Bald Eagles and other raptors, issues of habitat protection and general conservation. As a direct result of the active concerns of eagle watchers, the Mayor of the City of Pembroke Pines threw his support behind an effort to preserve the nest tree property as a Bald Eagle Sanctuary. If you have questions about the new Sub-Forums, and, particularly if you have suggestions about how to best organize the Sub-Forums, such as new categories, clearer category titles and descriptions, please reply to this post. After about 20 minutes the female flew in from the west to the nest area. She was carrying a good sized fish that looked like a shad. She circled with it and ended up roosting on top of a Melaleuca snag to the west of the nest and proceeded to eat the fish. About 10 minutes later (10:20 AM) the male flew in from the SW carrying a small fish. He roosted on an adjacent snag slightly above the female. Both kept eating until the female finished, at about 10:26 AM. The male flew off briefly and returned. Then the male flew down and they copulated for about 1 minute 10 seconds. It appeared to have been a successful mating, as witnessed by Liza on the previous day, and unlike some the brief attempts that had previously occurred. The male then flew back up to roost briefly before flying off at 10:31 AM. The female remained on the roost until the male came flying back carrying a stick, and at about 10:50 AM the female joined him. Both circled high over the nest area, but the male disappeared to the south. On the nest, the head of an adult was always visible, so this was unusual, an indication that an eaglet may have hatched. However, there were no signs of brooding behavior, and the second adult was never in sight. This morning (January 21) an eaglet was seen being fed. Mary Lou and Phil saw it, but I did not. Phil said that yesterday (January 20) he got a poor photo of the chick. We watched the eagle nest for about an hour this morning, from about 8:30-9:30 AM. Three watchers had just seen an adult fly to the nest tree from the dead melaleuca stumps to the west. When we got there the male was roosting only about 6 feet above the nest. The female was actively tearing at a prey item and may have been feeding the chick when I took this photo, but I had a bad angle.. The male then flew to its usual perch in the live Australian Pine to the east of the nest. I walked over theree to get photos without having the sun behind the bird. At that time, Mary Lou saw the eagle feeding a chick-- she could see the top of its head just above the nest rim. I concluded that this was the male because it appeared smaller and slimmer, and its beak seems a bit narrower. No sign of the dark streaks on the outer tail feathers that distinguished the male for the past two years. Phil's photo of the male also shows the tail feathers to be all white. When I got back to the nest I did not see the eaglet. Upon reviewing my photos, it is possible that I did get a shot of the top of the eaglet's head. There were 6 to 8 other bystanders observing the eagle nest while we were there. On processing these shots, I thought maybe I could see the head, just to the right of the adult.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Reports-of-eagle-chick-sighting-January-20-amp-21-td7211291.html","images":5},{"id":"7211327","topic":"7211291","order":2,"title":"Re: Reports of eagle chick sighting January 20 & 21","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2012-01-21T11:16:13.926000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Here is Phil's photo of the eagle that he identified as the male, showing all white tail feathers: This photo was taken October 30, 2011.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Reports-of-eagle-chick-sighting-January-20-amp-21-td7211291.html","images":1},{"id":"7576099","topic":"7576099","order":1,"title":"Surprise! Yesterday they had over 33,000 viewers at the same time, and today will likely be even busier (the number of viewers just exceeded 30,000 as I write this at 9:45 AM), as the first of the three eggs is expected to begin cracking open any time now. Viewers include many schools, and teachers have taken it on as class science projects. It would be interesting to know the specs of this camera and setup. It is mounted on the nest tree, the most ideal way to do this, as it avoids distortion due to relative movement of the nest tree and/or the camera mount. In response to several queries, I do not know whether it is the intention of the Pembroke Pines Mayor's Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee to continue efforts to install a nest camera at the City-owned Pembroke Pines site. The Steering Committee has not been convened in over a year, so it is essentially non-operational. It is now probably too late in the year to start planning a camera for the 2011-2012 breeding season, for it would have to be installed before October, 2011. The nest camera project was not the primary objective of the Steering Committee, but it would have supported its educational goals and objectives, as well as contributed to public safety in the area around the nest. Note that the Decorah site does not have a problem with onlookers, even though it is in plain sight of the road (which is visible behind the nest). There was good reason for FDOT to deny funding for the nest camera, as the light pole on the north side of Pines Boulevard was not a suitable site for the camera, and no other structure was available for this purpose. However, I do not understand the rationale for Florida FWC's alleged objections to mounting a camera on the nest tree, as a written explanation has never come to my attention. This would be much cheaper and less intrusive than installing a 50 foot tower or pole next to the nest. After all, two of the best eagle nest cameras are the Decorah and also the USFWS camera in W Virginia-- both are mounted on the nest trees. Further, it is beyond belief that FPL and/or Comcast/NBC 6 does not see the advantages of providing modest monetary and material support for such a camera in Pembroke Pines. They could sell advertising on the web camera display page and reach many thousands of viewers, in addition to providing a greatly appreciated community service. I wonder if their marketing people have even analyzed the value of such a venture. Again, view the Decorah Camera at this link and watch the eggs hatch. I especially want to see how the parents feed the newly hatched chicks and also hope to observe interactions between the nest-mates: DECORAH (IOWA) EAGLE NEST CAMERA LIVE http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles#utm_campaigne=synclickback&source=http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/Example-of-LIVE-Bald-Eagle-Nest-Camera-in-Iowa-td6067807.html&medium=3064708","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Rant-about-failure-of-FPL-and-or-Comcast-NBC6-to-support-a-nest-camera-in-Pembroke-Pines-td6227044.html","images":0},{"id":"6227311","topic":"6227044","order":2,"title":"Decorah eagles capture Eastern Iowa's attention","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-03-31T10:16:12.654000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"http://www.kwwl.com/Global/story.asp?S=14354357& Decorah eagles capture Eastern Iowa's attention Posted: Mar 30, 2011 10:21 PM EDT Written by Colleen O'Shaughnessy, Multimedia Journalist DECORAH (KWWL) - Three chicks are just days away from breaking their shells in front of tens of thousands of viewers. It's certainly had people - including us at KWWL- glued to our computers for the last month. The live feed of the Decorah Eagle Camera is part of the Raptor Resource Project -- an organization working toward the preservation of birds like eagles, falcons, and hawks. In the last couple of days, you'll generally find Bob Anderson glued to a computer monitor. He doesn't want to miss a glimpse of three eggs, incubating under their mother's care. The eagles we're all watching, are just a few yards from where Anderson is sitting. The nest is actually located in the backyard of Willard and Mary Ellen Holthaus, who Anderson credits for their patience and support of the project. Anderson chose the nest because of its proximity to a busy road. He figured, if the eagles didn't mind cars driving by, they would tolerate him and his camera. \"We could light off firecrackers, cherry bombs around and the female would not get off her eggs,\" Anderson noted. \"They're just extremely tolerant of mankind.\" Anderson started the eagle camera in 2007, with a stagnant camera mounted just above the nest. Then, a few months ago, he snuck a new camera, one that tilts and zooms, closer to the birds. \"In the month of October they have the least affinity to the nest, so that's the only time we can disturb them that we know we won't drive them away,\" said Anderson. Once they linked up with U-Stream, the nest went viral, boasting more than four million viewers. \"Now to think there's 30-35,000 at one time looking at it, that's just unbelievable,\" Anderson noted. The moment that resonates in Anderson's mind came a few weeks ago, as he watched freezing rain pour over the young female. She cared more about protecting her eggs than focusing on her own warmth. But the biggest impact comes in the emails and phone calls he receives from loyal viewers who are inspired by the birds eye view of mother nature. \"People in nursing homes say their clients get up in the morning and rush to the community room so they can check on \"their eagles.\" Almost like the Eagle Camera gives them a reason to get up in the morning,\" Anderson said. \"One of the most touching letters I got said, Bob, my husband and I stopped talking decades ago. But anytime we log onto the Eagle Camera we start babbling like newly weds. It's so amazing how its touched and influenced so many people in so many different ways.\"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Rant-about-failure-of-FPL-and-or-Comcast-NBC6-to-support-a-nest-camera-in-Pembroke-Pines-td6227044.html","images":0},{"id":"7575421","topic":"7575421","order":1,"title":"Nestorations in Deerfield","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2019-11-15T20:00:26.208000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Here's shot of mama bringing in a stick for the nest, then she spent a while placing it. They found an excellent tree with a substantial crotch, which is unusual in an Australian Pine, which usually sends up a single leader trunk. Bald Eagles naturally favor the flat tops of many mature native pines. A few years ago I could not get any traction for my idea of topping off several younger Australian Pines in the vicinity of the Pembroke Pines nest. This would cause them to send their vigor into side branches and thus create platforms for breeding eagles (and possibly Ospreys) in the event that their nest trees were felled by a hurricane. This is just the kind of structural result I was hoping for. However, municipal arborists shot it down, saying it would be \"unhealthy\" for the trees. Also there was fear that it would make new areas unavailable for development because the birds would be protected from disturbance. Hey! Australian Pines are \"weeds\" and quite hardy as well. Really thinking this would be feasible in suitable habitat, especially in existing Bald Eagle territories. Better than cell phone towers. This year it is \"nestruction.\" Next year and for many more years lets hope it is \"nestoration.\"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nestorations-in-Deerfield-td7575421.html","images":0},{"id":"7575426","topic":"7575421","order":5,"title":"Re: Nestorations in Deerfield","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2019-11-16T20:25:32.190000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hi Stephanie5056, If you look in the other post (Nest area visit on 11-2-19), I posted a google earth screen shot showing exactly where it is. The female (Jewel) was roosting on the center front nest support branch. The wind was strong and gusty from the east and the limb swung about wildly at times. The nest tree itself was swaying in the wind. At first I thought the nest was empty, and after about 10 minutes I saw the top of the male (Pride)'s head. He then sat up higher and began moving around. At about 10:25 they began calling to each other and suddenly Pride flew off and away from the rear of the nest. Jewel immediately occupied the nest. She briefly seemed to be arranging the nest or possibly tending the eggs or eaglets, but there was no indication that she was feeding any offspring. Jewel then settled out of sight in the nest and remained deep, quite certainly incubating unhatched egg(s). Pride disappeared and I could not find him roosting in any of the usual locations. Assuming from ground observations that incubation started on or after February 12, hatching of the first egg could be expected after MARCH 18. This is the updated TIME LINE: DEC 7 - consensus of ground observers that eggs were present that day or maybe a day or two before, as exchange of incubation duties was witnessed several times. Expected hatch date (5 weeks) on or before JAN 4 DEC 24 - Adult carrying grass to nest JAN 2 - Incubation exchange; Male sitting high as if possibly \"tenting\" an eaglet, looking down. Female then also was sitting higher after exchange. JAN 4 & 10 -- High winds buffeted the nest and part of the right side appears to have fallen down. JAN 10 -- Both adults moving sticks, building up the rim. JAN 25 -- Adults \"copulated.\" It is not unusual for the male to mount the female outside the normal mating season, but might it be possible that she was fertile and receptive because the first brood was lost? There was a prey drop, usually a sign that eaglets are present, but was this a courtship \"gift\" which we has accompanied copulation in the past? Remember that this happened with the same female (Jewel) during the 2015-16 season. The nest was damaged and first brood lost around JAN 19, 2016. We thought they had abandoned the nest around JAN 28, 2016, but they reappeared the next day. Her second clutch of eggs was probably laid around FEB 10 and hatched MAR 16; the first eaglet was seen on MAR 31, 2016. (We usually see an eaglet by the time it is 2-2 1/2 weeks old). Between FEB 12 & 16 (this year) the adults have been sitting very deep in the nest and taking turns as if incubating and no prey drops have been noted.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/March-9-Incubation-exchange-td7575513.html","images":6},{"id":"3916685","topic":"3916685","order":1,"title":"One adult near nest this morning OCT 29","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-10-29T21:51:52.463000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"One adult was roosting in the large pine to the east of the nest tree at about 9:30 AM. So I think you might be able to see them or hear them (Making calls after waking) before sunrise, but they leave right away after the sun rises. Sometimes they are over by the north end of the clover leaf (NB Turnpike exiting to the WB Sawgrass), they seem to like those trees over there, and I don't blame them it's absolutely beautiful over there, and lots of food sources with water on both sides. I ride my bike through there on the parks bike trail looking for them in the off season and I have seen the female there before nesting began in the middle of the day once, here's a picture of her hiding in a tree, almost didn't see her there.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Look-who-was-still-haging-around-Friday-td7575031.html","images":1},{"id":"7575040","topic":"7575031","order":9,"title":"Re: Look who was still haging around Friday","author":"Stylechick60","date":"2018-06-08T20:13:45-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"So Mom and dad are still around?
