I don't think there is any eggs yet, but any day now so they can hatch near Christmas day like the last 2 years. I will be trying to go to the nest fort the next 3 days at sunrise. Perhaps there are particular risks along a small strip of the Pinellas County coastline. We hope the cause of the deaths is determined. Here is her e-mail with supporting reports and a map showing the locations of the deaths: = = = = = Hello, I am copying this to the Bald Eagle group because one of the reports came from one of our Bald Eagle Watchers. Some of you may still be out there watching the raptors, like Osprey or other birds. Please let me know if you have noticed anything. Over the last couple of weeks at least 8 Osprey have perished along the Pinellas Coast. As far as we know they were all severely emaciated. Some of the locations include Pasadena, Clearwater, Dunedin, and Tarpon Springs. In one instance, on the same property, two Osprey and 1 yard cat perished. The Fish and Wildlife Commission has been contacted in hopes that they will investigate. If anyone can share recent Osprey observations or photographs or has first hand information about a sick or dead Osprey please contact me off -list at [email withheld] or [phone withheld]. This year Osprey watchers counted and listed locations of over 140 Osprey nests in North Pinellas. An estimated 90% of the population nests on artificial structures. A general observation for this year was that a greater number of nests had only one young. Two nests were noted as having 3 however. 8 young perished in the severe storm on April 14th. At least 1 adult was hit by a car and killed in the Oldsmar area. A fairly small percentage of nests were completely unproductive. If I had to ball park it I would say 3 out of 30 are unproductive in heavily populated areas, but that is just an estimate. Better data will be collected throughout the coming years. At this point the focus is on locating and counting and dealing with any issues that come up. The Osprey was emaciated. By the time the rescuer got there the Osprey which had been sitting on a piling was floating in the water. I think there is something wrong ecologically or environmentally here. One theory was that the water temperature could be too hot and the fish are too deep. Climate change? However I would think the recent rains would have cooled the water somewhat. Anyway, we can't help but wonder why so many deaths in such a short period of time and I am raising a red flag in this area. The Alt [specific street address withheld] location is in the same area as the other deaths. I've added it to my previous map. Thanks for any attention you can give this issue. Remains are available for 3 of these birds. These were all juveniles which had fledged. #3 is particularly concerning and the citizen has saved the remains and hopes for an FWC investigation as the pair has been prolific over the past 10 years. The Osprey appeared to be catching reasonably sized fish and visiting the nest on a fairly regular basis. Ms. Collins also discovered her outdoor cat dead. On the map I have included one Osprey death from last October, also an emaciated juvenile. ( I have not included the 8 young which perished in nests that blew down this year on 4/14, nor the 1 adult hit by a car in Oldsmar.) A general observation about the Osprey of Pinellas County this year are that many previously prolific and successful nests had only one young. Osprey Watch pinpointed 2 nests with 3 young but one of those nests the watcher has expressed some concerns over the health of the Osprey surviving at that site which is also in Dunedin near the San Mateo rescue of last fall which is not listed but noted on the map. I was present at that rescue and at that time the rescuer shared a concern with me about increases in these incidents. One of the theories on the Osprey that died this week is that as juveniles they were not highly skilled and were unable to catch any fish in the heavy rains however the timing does not coincide with the other recoveries. All of these Osprey are along a specific area of the coast. We have not yet had any reports of Osprey down among other more inland groups such as the Lake Tarpon group or the North Tampa Bay Derby Lanes group to my knowledge although I am sure that more juveniles were treated at Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary that may have come from those areas or areas to the south. I will be posting an alert to the Osprey Watch group for up to date observations and ground checks in case this has occurred in other areas and not reported at this time. The estimated number of nests for North Pinellas for 2008/2009 is 140. We continue to count and add to a spreadsheet with the locations of those nests as well as the substrate. One last final note about productivity for 2008/2009 - several nests were reported to me as knocked down by Progress Energy with no replacement platform installed. At least 2 nests remain on sensitive power lines one being the nest at Tarpon Springs Yacht Club #2. One nest was knocked down twice and caught on fire before a platform was finally erected. We lost at least 2 nesting trees. The Dunedin population is very fragile with many nests in weakened dead pines. Also very fragile are the nests on Tarpon Woods Municipal Golf Course. 1) Juvenile rescued at Dunedin County Club, emaciated, rescued by SSS but did not survive. (Last Monday 6/29) For additional Osprey rescues and transfers contact Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary. Michelle Simoneau [phone withheld]. Not sure which nest this Osprey came from but likely a dead or live pine on that course in that area. 2) Juvenile rescued at Tarpon Springs Yacht Club, emaciated, rescued by citizens late in the day on 7/3. It did not survive. The nest is in a dead pine. Remains available. 3) Two juveniles perished. The nest is in the backyard of a citizen in Clearwater, Ms. Laura Collins. Reported 7/4. An outdoor cat owned by the citizen also perished. For further information please contact Laura Collins. The nest is in a dead pine. Remains available. Luis saw that he landed on the ground in the cow pasture to the NW but did not seem to be gathering nest materials. Mom and Dad (Pride and Jewel) and P Piney 21 and 22: After their chicks hatch, the eagles often add to the soft lining of the nest. They bring in fresh grass and leaves. Some say this helps deter parasites. Indeed, they carried in some pods from the Flamboyant tree (AKA Royal Poinciana) which, like many other legumes (such as Lima Beans which are poisonous if not cooked) contain toxic substances and cyanide. I think they are also covering up some of the debris in the nest, \"sweeping the dirt under the rug.\" We observed a rather humorous interaction. Pride was rearranging some nest lining materials and the younger eaglet, perhaps thinking it was a tasty morsel, grasped a clump of sod from his beak. Pride watched as the eaglet carried it away to the left side of the nest. Pride tugged on the sod and retrieved it and finally replaced it on the floor of the nest. He then turned towards the eaglet as if to admonish it: Ever alert, Pride flew up above the nest to drive off an intruding eagle. We could hear it in the trees behind and to the right but never saw it. I can tell the two apart well now, besides the fact that she's bigger, she also has darker eyes, and an inverted V shape to her head feathers just under her bill or beak, his head feathers are more jagged at the bottom and his eyes are brighter than hers. She also has disruption of the feathers on her breast over her brood patch, which is more extensive than that of the male: Since the eagles lost their main roosting trees (the pine just to the east of the nest tree and the larger Melaleuca snags to the west of the nest) they have favored a new roost tree, s very tall pine which[specific nest-location detail withheld]. One decapitated eagle was found in a drainage ditch April 3. Wildlife agents also found a head “but the head doesn’t match the body we found,” Barham said Friday, so he knows at least two eagles were killed. “We’re going to make life very uncomfortable for some people,” he told members of the Senate Finance Committee. After the carcass was discovered April 3, DWF Capt. Alan Bankston said, “To see any protected animal decapitated in a ditch is disheartening enough, let alone the animal that represents our symbol of freedom.” Barham said the DWF investigation has identified two people. “It’s complicated. There’s a juvenile involved so we have to be careful how we handle it.” The juvenile said a relative was involved ,“but the relative denies it,” he said. “One of them is a resident of Texas, so we’re working with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.” “Why would you kill a bald eagle anyway and cut its head off?” Barham asks in disgust. “Were they going to mount it?” The bald eagle is listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. It was removed from “endangered” list in August 2007. Barham said it depends on the judge as to what penalty would be imposed, but under the Southern Bald Eagle Protection Act, the maximum penalty for killing an eagle is 1 year in prison or $100,000 per bird. “It can be multiplied,” he said. “I believe that killing a eagle, chopping its head off and throwing it in a ditch is about as egregious as you’re likely to see.” The bald eagle also is afforded protection under three federal statutes: the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Killing or wounding an eagle has been held to be a violation of all three acts. Under the Eagle Protection Act, killing an eagle carries a maximum fine of $5,000 or one year imprisonment in a federal prison. Under the MBTA, it’s a maximum of two years imprisonment and $250,000 fine for a felony conviction or six months imprisonment or $5,000 fine for a misdemeanor conviction.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Arrest-pending-for-slaughter-and-decapitation-of-Bald-Eagles-td6439165.html","images":0},{"id":"7575550","topic":"7575550","order":1,"title":"April 28-May 2 Photos and Cottonmouth near nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2020-05-02T15:43:44.252000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Phil Martin has obtained some nice photos. The female (Jewel) was sitting or standing in the nest at first, and the male (Pride) was roosting on the right supporting branch. After about 15 minutes the female settled deeper into the nest, becoming almost invisible. Other watchers have also noted her sitting deep over the last few days and suspect she may have laid the first egg. Our experience with the former mate (Joy) was that she became broody for a few days, during which time she would sit very deep but also leave the nest for varying intervals. We gauged the laying of the first egg as the day when she settled deep and continued with few or no observed flights away from the nest during the next 2-3 days. After that the mates exchange incubation duties, further confirmation that eggs were present. We returned to the nest at about 10:15 AM and Jewel was standing rather high in the nest. Pride had moved down the limb to be very close to the nest. Suddenly they started calling mutually and Pride flew to the nest and they copulated, maintaining cloacal apposition for about 7 seconds, as captured by my photo times. The male flew up to roost above the nest: The happy couple: This is the first time I have seen any eagles copulate on the nest when eggs were assumed to be present. The previous pair were seen copulating on the nest while building/restoring the nest, but generally copulated on tree limbs or the Melaleuca snags. No one has yet reported copulation this season, which is rather unusual, as the week leading up to laying the first egg is said to be when they mate most frequently. Of course we also see them copulating after the chicks hatch but do not remember any reports during the 5 week incubation period. Perhaps readers who have closely monitored the eagle nest cams can add their observations on this point. Further, during our 45 minute period of observation Jewel remained rather high in the nest, unlike the sustained deep position we have seen previously during incubation. The behavior leads to question whether the first egg has yet been laid. Please keep an eye on the nest and try watching for an extended period to confirm that the female is continuously deep (except for turing the eggs and changing postion in the nest) and rarely flies off briefly unless the mate is covering the eggs.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Do-the-Pembroke-Pines-pair-have-their-first-egg-td7574245.html","images":7},{"id":"7574246","topic":"7574245","order":2,"title":"Re: Do the Pembroke Pines pair have their first egg?","author":"Randy","date":"2015-12-13T15:18:38.862000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Ken, very nice pictures. Ken I will share on your Facebook page and please load them on here . I went to the nest today after I got a Phone from a good friend of mine telling me we may have a Eaglet . I rushed to the nest today and took a very good Eagle friend with me and yes we did see Jewel feeding the little Eagle we did not see the Eaglet becasue of the dead Branch in from of the nest :*( But she did feed the Eaglet 2 times in the 2 hours we were at the nest . Pride took off hunting and did come back with food and Jewel begin to feed the baby the second time . Pride then went to his favorite Branch and just watched Jewel taking care of the little Eaglet . I knew we have a least one Eaglet we half to wait and see if we have more . I know the Eaglet is very small so maybe only a few days old to a week old . I am so proud of Pride & Jewel they did not give up and she is a Very Healthy Eagle to go on to lay more egg or eggs . I only hope people give them the space they need becasue she is a first time mom . She was doing a great job today feeding and covering her little Eaglet or Eaglets up :) I am so Happy for our Pride & Jewel :)","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Happy-to-inform-you-all-td7574433.html","images":0},{"id":"7574434","topic":"7574433","order":2,"title":"Re: Happy to inform you all :)","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2016-03-24T06:28:27.306000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Thanks, Lisa-- this is great news indeed, and good advice to visitors to not approach the nest. That eaglet stayed at the nest poking and proding around at something. As I was taking pics of the eaglet on the nest, the second one flew right in front of me!! It was shocking. I was standing by the roadway and it was flying to the pines where the parent was. I didn't have time to react with my camera, hence the out of focus pic of the second eaglet. That eaglet landed next to the parent. Immediately, the parent flew off and I didn't see it again. It was windy and drizzling a little, and the eaglet stayed on that tall pine until I left. The one on the nest remained there. This all happened within less than a half-hour time span. Quite exciting for me.
