Phil Martin knows a thing or two about eagles. “They are a symbol of our great nation,” he said. I’ve been watching this eagle’s nest now for approximately 12 years.” So has Dr. Ken Schneider. Both men had their bird worlds recently shaken when something happened to the nest. “About a week and a half ago we’ve noticed that the nest had collapsed,” said Dr. Schneider. A nest with two baby American bald eagles. While a female eaglet was pretty quickly recovered, her brother was missing. Volunteers and eagle watchers notified authorities. Over a week went by with no sign of the baby bird. Long time watchers and lovers of the eaglets’ parents were on the verge of giving up hope. “Just as they were ready to leave, he says, ‘wait a minute, I can see the eaglet,’” said Dr. Schneider. The missing baby eaglet was found hiding in a deep trench, with only its yellow feet visible. Fire rescue crews finally were able to rescue the fallen bird. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission took it to the same sanctuary as its sister. “I feel very confident that if it wasn’t for the efforts of the Pembroke Pines Fire Department, these eagles would’ve perished,” said Martin. It was a happy moment for our nation’s most beloved symbol of freedom and strength. “It’s amazing that we were able to get both of them back, so we’re so happy,” said Martin. “I cannot describe the joy that I have knowing that these bald eaglets now have a second chance on life.”","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MAY-2-Second-Eaglet-Rescued-The-value-of-having-many-eyes-on-the-eagles-td7576179.html","images":0},{"id":"7576202","topic":"7576179","order":8,"title":"Re: MAY 2: Second Eaglet Rescued - The value of having many eyes on the eagles","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2021-05-07T13:30:26.323000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"CORRECTION: Only the first grounded eaglet is in the care of the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland. Brown-Tip was very active in nest-building. Is Brown-Tip larger or smaller? If larger, and maybe base of the bill appears thicker than its mate, then we may have determined that Brown-Tip is female. Remember, last year the female bird seemed to have one or more white feathers on its breast. No guarantee they will be there again this season. BTW, I first photographed Brown-Tip on October 29th and posted it here on the FORUM. I cannot find any earlier shots that show the distinctive tail feather, but perhaps there are many more that are on our computers. Let's see if we have any earlier views. I could not find the distinctive mark on any of last year's photos, but of course they undergo annual molt. This year we have ready-made names for the adults-- White-Tip and mate. I wonder whether such an anomaly might persist through a body and flight feather molt. When the eagles have a full crop, the under-feathers sometimes show as lighter. Also, the female may have a brood spot as some other species do, and this might cause swelling of the breas area and expose lighter contour feathers. Interestingly, the female chick fledged last season also sported a white spot, if I remember correctly. Others may wish to chime in on this one. Here are photos from last Feb and March-- one of the pair does have some dark tail feather tips, and it was the one that we assumed was the male, as it was a bit smaller. However, the white spot on the presumed female is inconsistent. When I posted this photo I noted that the presumed female was on the left. Note the several dark tail feather tips on the presumed male. The final photo shows several small brown markings on the tips of the tail feathers on this bird.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Have-no-fear-both-are-here-td4077715.html","images":4},{"id":"4078580","topic":"4077715","order":7,"title":"Re: Have no fear, both are here!","author":"Kathy","date":"2009-11-27T23:48:43.299000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"That is great, and very nice pics!!! The photos here were with a Sigma 50-500 zoom lens. The camera is very good, the lens is very good when subjects are close and your zoomed in tight. The lens is not as good for reaching far away objects (like the photos posted here, which are all cropped to acheive close-in look.) I also have a dedicated 2x converter which really gets in close, but image quality is compromised dramatically. The Sigma lens is $1000 vs $5000 for a 400mm f2.8 Canon lens - now you know why I own it! Canon does make a high quality, sharp 400mm f5.6 lens which is very popular with birding crowds because of its light weight and sharpness (does not have IS) which is just a little more $ than the Sigma. The Nikon D90 is said to be a good camera - similar to Canons current 50D. Each have their pros/cons. A great site for camera evaluations is www.dpreview.com. We arrived at the eagle nest around 10:25 AM and observed for about 1/2 hour. We immediately saw one adult sitting on the left (east) rim of the nest, sometimes looking down into the nest. No other eagle appeared to be on the nest. It was a chilly 53 degrees (F) and there was a stiff gusty breeze out of the NNW which caused the Melaleucas in front of the nest, as well as the nest tree twigs to sway considerably, often obscuring the nest. However, when the \"harmonics\" were just right I sometimes got a full view of the nest. Initially my 12 or more photos showed only the one adult. 10:28 AM I left the nest momentarily to check out the roost trees to the west, and as I was returning, Mary Lou called out that another eagle had flown in from the rear (south) of the nest. When I got to the nest I could see only one eagle... 10:31 AM ...but then, after several minutes, the head of a second appeared above the nest rim. 10:32 AM 10:39 AM No prey items were visible, and at no time did they appear to be eating or tearing at prey. After a few minutes, one of the eagles (the first one?) flew out the near (north) side of the nest and flew low to the left (east), disappearing behind the trees on the highway median. 10:41 AM After this we got views of the top of the head of the second eagle deep in the nest. 10:53 AM We do not know how to interpret what we saw. Mary Lou believes there was an exchange of incubation or brooding duties. The pattern of the junction of the white head feathers and the brown body of the standing bird look quite identical to me-- did the next arrival immediately start incubating duties? Since the incubating bird was very low in the nest, this suggests that the first egg had not hatched, but it was chilly and this may have been expected in any event. The first adult's behavior of looking down into the nest has been associated with the hatching of the first egg in past seasons. I could not guess the sex of either adult. The bird in flight looks rather stocky and also lacks the streaking of the outer tail feathers that we saw early in the season on the male. We also saw this Buteo gliding over the nest. At first I thought it was a Red-shouldered Hawk, because of the contrast between the dark wing tips and the proximal light area. When I saw the photo I recognized that the white area consists of a group of new primary feathers, not the light base of the primaries at the tip of the wing as in Red-shouldered. This bird has a dark belly band and dark patagial marks and lacks red on its tail, characteristic of an immature Eastern Red-tailed hawk.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-January-15-Day-35-both-adults-at-nest-interesting-behavior-td7190369.html","images":7},{"id":"2521068","topic":"2521068","order":1,"title":"Sunday 5-7:40 PM at the nest","author":"Jill W","date":"2009-03-23T09:26:52.975000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Seemed the eaglets were making up for lost time yesterday. Nestled — quite literally — in a tall tree on Mooseheart property off Randall Road in Batavia, Mr. and Mrs. Bald Eagle and kids have created such a distraction, the Kane County Sheriff's Department has issued a warning: » Click to enlarge image Two bald eagles sit on their nest in a tree on the Mooseheart property. The eagles have made a nest on the property for the second year in a row, with two confirmed eaglets. (Scott Seifrid/For Sun-Times Med SAFE VIEWING • A sanctioned viewing area where the Mooseheart bald eagles may be viewed safely with a long-distance lens has been established off Deerpath Road at Hawks Bluff Park. Visit the Kane County Audubon Society website, www.kanecountyaudubon.org, for details and a map. Stop to view the magnificent creatures and you'll get ticketed for illegal parking. Cross the Mooseheart fence to get a closer look, and you'll get fined for trespassing. Lt. Pat Gengler and the Sheriff's Department don't want to be the bad guys here. Even in the northern woods of Canada, Gengler said of his own experience, witnessing these spectacular creatures is truly \"amazing.\" So he understands the thrill it gives the locals to be able to view and photograph these once rare birds that have only been bumped off the endangered species list since 2007. But right now, it's the eagles doing the endangering. Experts say most of the 200 bald eagles in the state live along the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. But as their population grows and our waterways become cleaner, they are beginning to make their way farther north. The problem is, Mr. and Mrs. Eagle, who returned after nesting on Mooseheart property in 2009, chose to build their seasonal home close to an extremely dangerous stretch of Randall Road, where speeding drivers tend to zoom around the curve going [specific street address withheld], even to witness the Second Coming, would simply not be tolerated. \"We've had enough accidents there, including fatalities,\" said Gengler. \"We don't need any more.\" The issue only intensified as media coverage about the bald eagles picked up. At first it was just a few cars. But as headlines appeared and word spread, more spectators arrived. It's gotten so bad, said Gengler, that some people are actually parking on the west side of Randall and crossing the busy roadway to get closer to the nest. Some, like freelance photographer Scott Seifrid, even set up tripods off the fast-paced roadway. \"I've worked construction at night so I'm used to dangerous conditions,\" Seifrid said in his defense. Still, the St. Charles wildlife enthusiast understands the warnings. \"It's gotten crazy out there,\" he added. Sheriff's deputies will be patrolling the area and will issue tickets to vehicles parked along Randall Road, said Gengler. Also, those who ignore the \"no trespassing\" signs on Mooseheart property will be fined. No tickets have been issued yet. \"Right now, we are just telling people to move along, but we will start writing them,\" Gengler said. \"The last thing we want is for these magnificent creatures to be associated with something tragic.\" Jerry Hope, board member of the Kane County Audubon Society, also warns enthusiasts to stay at least 200 feet away from the nest, as there is concern the human invasion could prevent these bald eagles from returning. A sanctioned viewing area has been established off Deerpath Road at Hawks Bluff Park (go to www.kanecountyaudubon.org for more details and a map), which allows long-distance lenses to capture the awesome creatures. Taking a look at some of the photos already shot, it's apparent why there's such a fuss. \"You watch people's faces go from curiosity to amazement,\" said Seifrid. \"It's no wonder the bald eagle is an American icon.\" >> Link to another photo Comments: kp1999 wrote: Preventing accidents and injuries is an excellent use of taxpayer dollars. Mooseheart is private property. I don't blame them for wanting to keep people from trespassing. I certainly would appreciate that kind of legal protection if eagles nested in my backyard. There was much less activity this weekend, possibly due to heat and the holiday, and I did not see any police. The barricades were removed and new signs have been posted on the road that say \"emergency stopping only\" but I saw a few cars ignore them to stop briefly on the shoulder. Thank you for alerting the police and alleviating the hazard. No viewing or photo opportunity is worth that risk. Do you know how long the eagles might stay at the nest this summer? I do not know how old the eaglets are or when they might start taking flight. Do you? I saw one flap his/her wings on Saturday and it was exciting for me to see the wingspan. Denise Hi, Denise-- I heard about the mowed trail at Hawk's Bluff Park. It provides quite a good view of the nest. I knew there was a nest somewhere on Mooseheart School property, but first \"discovered\" it on May 1, which I think was a day or so before the chicks first peered over the edge of the nest. Judging from our two years of observing the nest in Florida, this suggests they may have been about 2-3 weeks old. The eaglets fledge at 11-12 weeks of age-- ours in Florida fledged at almost exactly 11 weeks both this year and last. Expect them to do a lot of flapping. In the two weeks before they fledge they will leap into the air and \"helicopter\" over the nest. Once they start going out on the limbs (\"branching\") they are about ready to take their first flight. The larger chick will usually fledge about 3 days before the smaller (usually younger) one. If my estimate of the age of the Batavia [IL] chicks was correct, this means they might fledge between June 26 and July 3. Unlike many birds whose chicks leave the nest after flying, Bald Eagles tend to use the nest as a feeding platform. They coax the eaglets to return to the nest, and may continue feeding them at the nest for another 7-8 weeks, in our Florida experience. Assuming these northern birds follow the same pattern, this will provide great viewing opportunities through the month of August. After first leaving the nest, the Florida chicks disappeared into the wooded area for 1-3 days, initially causing the observers some concern that they may have been injured. They run around on the ground and ladder their way up the surrounding trees. The parents continued to bring food to the nest. We sometimes could hear the chicks calling but did not see them again until they suddenly reappeared on the nest, probably driven back by hunger. During the first few days after fledging, they slept on the nest, but then began roosting on or near the nest tree, ready to meet the parents when they came in with prey. After flying for about a month, they began accompanying the parents when they foraged, but still followed them back to the nest to be fed. Their first flight is very hazardous-- 25- 50% mortality is said to be associated with the fledging period-- sometimes they fall out of the nest too early, or they get injured or killed on their first few clumsy flights. Big hazards for urban eagles are motor vehicles and power lines. It's good that many people will be watching them during this period, as parents generally will not feed a downed chick if it is in cover, and a rehabilitator may need to be called to retrieve it. Follow the above link for a spreadsheet that details the behavioral milestones for the Florida eagles, last season and right up to the present. It will be interesting to see if they adhere to a similar schedule. There is a link to my main eagle watch page beneath my signature line. On Saturday, NOV 14 we arrived at about 7:15 AM and Luis was already there. He had been watching since before sunrise (for 30-45 minutes) and did see one adult on the dead tree to the east of the nest. It flew and landed briefly in the large pine to the east of the nest-- not on the usual roosting branch but deeper in the tree. It called for a bit, leading Luis to assume there may be another eagle in the area, but neither heard nor saw a second one. After resting briefly, it flew to the nest but only remained for \"a few seconds\" before flying off to the SE. On Sunday, NOV 15 we watched briefly, from about 7:15 to 7:30 but there were no birds present. Luis had not seen any, either. Maria Rosa texted me this morning to report that she had not seen any eagles since her last report, which was a single adult on the nest on the morning of NOV 9th. She passes by the nest early most mornings and is able to check the nest. We hope that the pair will start spending more time on and near the nest. In the past there was usually quite a bit of activity especially during the 2 weeks before the eggs were laid in mid-December. Might the pair have started tending a second nest? They have been known to spend some time in the only other nearby Melaleuca grove, [specific nest-location detail withheld], south of the waste recycling center. It is difficult to access this area, as the trucks line up on Pembroke Road and utilize the narrow roadway where it dead-ends, about a half mile east of US-27. There have been few reports from observers, so lets all keep an eye out-- even make brief spot checks if you do not have much time to spend at the nest site. Negative reports will also be useful to get an idea of the extent of our coverage of events at the nest.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/NOV-17-Very-few-reports-of-eagles-at-nest-since-NOV-9-td7574212.html","images":0},{"id":"7574213","topic":"7574212","order":2,"title":"Re: NOV 17: Very few reports of eagles at nest since NOV 9","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-11-17T12:09:34.153000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"The nest was looking good on NOV 14th:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/NOV-17-Very-few-reports-of-eagles-at-nest-since-NOV-9-td7574212.html","images":1},{"id":"7574216","topic":"7574212","order":3,"title":"Re: NOV 17: Very few reports of eagles at nest since NOV 9","author":"Liza","date":"2015-11-17T19:30:03.365000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"I've been visiting the nest everyday ,. 10am . 1Pm and 4 till the Sun starts going down. As someone pointed out earlier the Sun-Sentinel was out to do a story on the nest; it is at the top of their home page right now www.sun-sentinel.com. Here is the link to the story and the text, there is a picture of the one of the eagles feeding the chicks and a video. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/broward/pembroke-pines/fl-pines-eagles-20100222,0,5883410.story The bald eagles of Pembroke Pines are back First nesting pair since 1970s gives birth to three chicks Pembroke Pines - Wings extended to their full span, the bald eagle swept toward its nest. A fuzzy gray head popped up above the rim. It was lunch time. The eagle settled into its home of sticks and grass, tore at some sort of prey with its yellow beak - oblivious to the cars and trucks rushing by on Pines Boulevard - and began gently feeding bits of food to its three chicks. The celebrated bald eagles of Pembroke Pines – the first nesting pair in Broward County since the 1970s – have returned, and in the past four weeks they have produced three eaglets. A committee of conservationists and government officials are working to make sure the eagles are protected on their 24 acres of city-owned land. \"We're just absolutely excited the eagles have come back to our city,\" Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis said Friday, standing in the traffic island of Pines Boulevard as the eagle fed its young. \"It puts us on the map. It's a great, great story for our city.\" The city plans a contest among school children to name the three chicks. Located about [specific street address withheld] just east of U.S. 27, the nest looks down on the barrel-tile roofs of a housing development across the street. The land around the nest is owned by the city, and Ortis would not rule out eventually selling it for development. But he said even if that happened, the city would take steps to make sure the nest was protected, with sufficient room around it for the eagles to remain. A draft amendment to the city's comprehensive plan would require the city to \"protect and preserve bald eagle nesting sites\" and to adopt an eagle sanctuary protection ordinance. Conservationists said they are satisfied the city will protect the nest. \"The city has been totally cooperative with us,\" said Doug Young, president of South Florida Audubon Society and chairman of the Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee. But Young and other conservationists are concerned about public safety, since a lot of people are stopping their cars and wandering into the road to watch the eagles. The eagles, which successfully raised two eaglets last year, left for the summer, and returned to their Pembroke Pines nest in September, said Ken Schneider, a retired physician and member of South Florida Audubon, who blogs about the nest at http://www.rosyfinch.com . They found their home battered down to about half its size by wind, and set to work building it up, collecting sticks and lining their home with grass. The female eagle produced three chicks, an unusual number for a species for which two is typical. The youngest one is considerably smaller than the others, and Schneider said it may not survive because its siblings were competing in the nest for food. But there are hopeful signs: \"We've seen the mother actually reach with a morsel of food, bypassing the others, and feeding the little chick.\" And Lynda White, EagleWatch coordinator for Florida Audubon, said she's optimistic about the smallest chick's chances, saying young eagles grow so rapidly that the smaller sibling generally grows big enough to hold its own. \"He should be fine,\" she said. \"What usually happens is that the little one catches up.\" The eagles prey mostly on fish, caught in nearby lakes and canals, although they also kill cattle egrets, white ibises and small mammals. Schneider saw one of the eagles bring a rabbit back from one hunting expedition. And on another occasion saw one fly to the nest with a three-foot snake in its talons. Like other eagles, these rob ospreys of fish they had caught. Schneider said he's seen the angry osprey chase the eagle, but the eagle flies clear of its own nest, reluctant to bring a large and irritated osprey near its young, and just wears the osprey out before deciding it's safe to go home. Once an emblem of the decline of America's wildlife, the bald eagle has made a remarkable recovery, largely due to the banning of pesticide DDT in 1972. The pesticide washed into lakes and rivers, built up in the flesh of fish consumed by eagles, leading to eggs with shells so thin they broke as the parent eagle sat on them. The bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2007, although it remains illegal to harm them. In the past 24 years, the bald eagle population of Florida has grown 300 percent, with an estimated 1,340 active nests last year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. On Friday afternoon, a few people with binoculars and cameras gazed up at the nest and at the adults that perched in a cluster of dead melaleuca trees to the west. Marilyn Wilde, of Plantation, showed up with her husband Jay and a Nikon camera with a telephoto lens. \"We think it's fascinating that we have a bald eagle nest right in our back yard,\" she said.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-Article-in-Sun-Sentinel-td4614443.html","images":0},{"id":"7572999","topic":"7572999","order":1,"title":"Still no eaglet","author":"Phil M.","date":"2013-03-28T22:19:24.102000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"We went to the nest today at approximately 10:30, at which time an adult flew into the nest with a fish, took a couple bites and within 30 seconds flew off to the south west. (Map showing location of both nests is at end of this post). A cold front moved through and it has been rainy and cold with high winds and gusts at times. The new nest does not appear to have suffered any damage. This morning I arrived at 8:15 AM. Luis had already been watching, and Smith arrived right after me. As I walked to the site, Smith saw an adult fly in over my head towards the east (I did not see it as I was looking west at the roost trees). It then returned westward within a few minutes. Luis suspected it was heading to the old nest and called us over to see that it was eating a prey item in the old nest. We watched for almost two hours until about 10:15 AM and the second eagle never appeared. In the past, nest observers reported that the pair sometimes carried prey to a tree to the south along SW 208th Avenue as a staging or \"butchering\" site before feeding it to eaglets. Eagles also are known to consume prey away from the foraging area in order to keep it from being stolen by other birds or mammals. I could not find any references to habitual use of the old nest for caching or eating prey. It was difficult to get a good view of the nest through the draping branches and leaves (\"needles\") of the nest tree. We were not sure but the adult appears to be the male, Pride, based upon the depth of the gape (rictus) of its bill, which did not extend past the middle of his eye. Body shape seemed to be more slender and tapered towards the tail versus the more rotund appearance of the female. These difference are subtle and it is easier to compare the pair when they are together, so I could be wrong. Also, the nest may have lost more material. I wonder if they are taking some branches away to the new nest. Not sure whether this practice has been described by researchers. We did see them bring a few branches to the old nest while working on the new one. The prey item is a fairly large fish:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-27-Adult-eating-prey-on-old-nest-td7575733.html","images":6},{"id":"7576576","topic":"7576576","order":1,"title":"Adult Eagle seen at Nest Tree 9-10-2022","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2022-09-11T13:15:56.020000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hello, I just wanted to say that one of the adults was at the same tree as last year's nesting location. Perhaps Florida FWCC may be able to gain access with cooperation of local law enforcement officials, as an active nest, if one indeed exists at this site, may be subject to planned disturbance which could place the developer in legal jeopardy. For what it is worth, eBird data shows no concentration of Bald Eagle sightings in the general area during the past ten years including the present breeding season. One parent was perched in the usual location a couple hundred yards west of the nest, and 3 young were visible resting with heads just showing. Around 10-10:30am parent surprised young returning to nest with food. Yesterday during one visit, all three young became visibly, and one audibly, active while looking in parent’s arrival direction. All parent trip “leavings and returns” were from the south. Young where left to feed by themselves, parent did not spend much time tearing apart food. You must first register and subscribe (if desired) and then request membership in the pop-up which should appear if you attempt to post. If you have problems, please contact: < [email withheld] > The procedure for posting photos provides two alternatives-- either post a photo from your computer or device or, if your photo is published on the Internet, you may post the address (URL) of your photo. In the latter case, be sure that the photo is JPG format. The address must end in \".jpg\" or it will not display. Be sure to \"resize\" the image, as the original may be larger than the size of the screen. Let the image \"float,\" which lets you decide where you might wish to place it if you are including text or captions. Post in the appropriate sub-forum. INSTRUCTIONS: = = = = = = The menu for posting photos is fairly straightforward: First, select the appropriate sub-FORUM in which to post your photo (e.g., a specific nest, a sighting away from a known nest, or others as listed). If you wish to have photos appear in your message, use the drop-down menu at the top of the \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" window. If you simply paste the link into the text, clicking on the link will direct the user to a single photo or separate web page. Select: \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" --> \"Insert Image\" --> choose either to upload from your computer or copy the image's address from the internet If you do choose the latter option, the display photo on many sites such as Facebook or Flicker etc may not be in JPG format, so you may need to click on it to view it in a separate window which may be JPG or provide options such as \"save image URL\" or format or size. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" Generally, the \"Large\" size option works fine, as it resizes the image to fit the screen. Also let the image \"float\" inside any text you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere in your message. IF you have multiple photos it is best to array them in a vertical stack rather than side by side, as they will otherwise spread across the screen horizontally and may not be as friendly when viewed on a phone screen, If you watermark your photos, please try to place the mark so that it does not detract from the subject of your photo.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/How-to-post-photos-on-a-sub-FORUM-td7576195.html","images":0},{"id":"7574248","topic":"7574248","order":1,"title":"Friday DEC 11: Pride brings food and pair copulates on nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-12-13T15:46:14.378000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"One of the ground observers reported watching the nest from about 12 noon to 1:30 PM on Friday December 11. Join me in the near future at the Everglades Birding Festival, which takes place January 15-19th, 2015 where you may find up to 170 species while gaining advanced birding skills. And with these new skills, why not join me and Ernest Leupin, a Colombian native and owner of Colombia Wild Ecotours to visit the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Caribbean for a possibility of up to 25 endemics and 350+ species. Santa Marta is just a 2.5 hour flight from Miami or Fort Lauderdale and is very safe and considered one of the best birding spots in the world! Everglades Birding Festival JANUARY 15-19, 2015 Colombia Santa Marta and Caribbean Tour MARCH 22-30, 2015 The idea will be to meet in South Florida and leave for Colombia as a group. As a bonus, we will have a pre-tour birding trip to Broward’s hotspots the day before to see some of South Florida’s target species as well as countable exotics like Common Myna, Purple Swamphen, and Egyptian Goose. After a good days birding, we will have dinner (at your own cost) at a beachside restaurant to get to know each other and learn more about the tour. If you are planning on attending the festival or the Colombia tour, we can help book the flights with our friends at Capricho Travel, who specialize in trips to Colombia, feel free to also contact Ernest in case you have any questions regarding the Festival or the Colombia trip by email at [email withheld] . After countless hours of watching, observing, waiting, etc. I can confirm we have at least one eaglet that is 4 weeks old. Our eagles started nestorations in October as usual to the nest outside of the park near the Sawgrass. I saw them mating a couple times Thanksgiving week, she followed suit with sitting very low in the nest. Then the first week of January, she was high on the nest and a fish was brought in. A week later, nothing, for 3 weeks our eagles weren't to be found. Then I saw them bringing in branches and grasses. Mama sat very low in the nest, usually out of sight unless she rolled the eggs, starting in February. I go a few times a week to watch and wait for hours, sometimes, just catching a glimpse of her moving around, then she disappears in the bowl! I was there March 19, and she was low in the bowl, when I returned March 24, she was up high on the back of the nest. I also caught daddy door dash bringing fish to the nest twice. The nest is well hidden with branches, you really have to be in the right spot, with the wind blowing just right to see anything. They had never left the nest alone, so we were sure they had a re-clutch. After hearing the squeeing and not sure if it was wishful thinking, I finally saw an eaglet this week. Yesterday, I saw her with a big piece of fish and 2 dark black \"blobs\" under and in front of her. So there might be 2 eaglets! Here is the link to the photos I have taken from this season. The last one is from yesterday, you have to zoom, but you can see what appears to be 2 black blobs waiting to be fed. Hungry and very loud, right after, it was quiet again! https://pattisirbola.smugmug.com/Quiet-Waters-2024-2025/n-ZxgJX5","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/We-have-an-eaglet-td7576688.html","images":0}]
