The oldest chick is now about 12 days old. Of interest, a male Northern Harrier flew over the nest area. Mature males, which are gray and white with black wingtips, are outnumbered 8 or 12 to 1 by the larger brown females and immature birds, so it is a treat to see one. A flock of Fish Crows chased the colony of Monk Parakeets away from their nest on the high pole. I thought they were looking for eggs or young birds to eat, but instead they stole twigs, presumably to use on their own nests. Fish Crows can be predators on the very young eaglets.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Friday-January-27-all-is-quiet-at-nest-harrier-and-crows-seen-td7234124.html","images":3},{"id":"7575595","topic":"7575595","order":1,"title":"Bald Eagle Nest Spreadsheet 2008-present updated","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2020-07-19T12:13:59.968000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"View the spreadsheet which contains records of all Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle breeding seasons (Adobe Acrobat, 28 pages-- scroll to end for the present 2019-2020 season) at this link: BALD EAGLE MILESTONES 2008-2020 This is a screenshot of the last 2 pages of the spreadsheet-- use link above for more legible view","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagle-Nest-Spreadsheet-2008-present-updated-td7575595.html","images":2},{"id":"7574079","topic":"7574079","order":1,"title":"Miami Herald Article provides update on NW Miami Bald Eagle Nest","author":"NancyB","date":"2015-03-21T11:18:37.922000-04:00","nest":"North Miami / Miami-Dade historical records","season":"","text":"According to the Miami Herald, the road construction has been stopped, but a developer has plans to build a Walmart and shopping center on the property. A resident spotted the nest, one of only two active ones documented in Miami-Dade County, earlier this year atop an Australian pine in a 28-acre cow pasture. It’s the same tract where a developer had previously unveiled plans for a mall anchored by a scaled-down Walmart supermarket, a Ross Dress for Less, a HomeGoods and other national chains. “It was a majestic looking, amazing thing,” said Victor Mallo, who fumbled to snap a picture one morning as he drove past. “I’m frantically trying to Facebook that they’re here, and then the eagle gets on the edge of the nest and takes a dive.” The discovery of the iconic birds, at the very least, seems likely to complicate plans for one particular project in the once-sleepy community on the county’s Northwestern fringe, which earlier this month was blindsided by plans for a far more massive complex touted as the nation’s largest mall. State and federal wildlife rules restrict development near active eagle nests. And work to widen an adjacent county road has already been shut down. Developer Robert L. Shapiro has pledged to protect the nest, but doesn’t see it as major roadblock. He said his mall, like his other projects, will become a “landmark” center and he objected to any comparison to another Walmart-related project on endangered pine rockland near Zoo Miami that has drawn protests and online petitions. “It’s totally different,” he said. “This is a single bird. And it has nothing to do with the fact that the property is undeveloped and has no butterflies or anything like that. There’s nothing other than the eagles. If the tree blew down in a hurricane, there would be no issue.” Shapiro’s mall, which would include more than 250,000 square feet of retail, has already cleared one of many hurdles it faces. On March 12, the area’s community council signed off on rezoning the pasture near Northwest 186th Street — despite neighbors’ objections over traffic from nearby I-75 clogging their streets. But the presence of eagles, not only a symbol of conservation but national pride, can be a more formidable — but not necessarily permanent — obstacle to development. In 2004, after a nest believed to be the first outside Everglades National Park was spotted in Doral, a developer was asked to stop construction on about 40 homes until nesting season ended. “Bottom line, you cannot take eagles. That’s it,” said Ulgonda Kirkpatrick, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s regional eagle biologist, using the agency term for harm. “You cannot [disturb] a nesting pair or cause them to abandon their nests.” But exactly how that protection plays out is tricky. “You try to be Solomon-esque,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo, whose district covers the area. Federal and state laws allow developers to obtain permits that, in theory, protect wildlife while balancing property owners’ rights with conservation measures. But the process can be messy. Negotiations over the other contentious Walmart project in rare butterfly and bat habitat near Zoo Miami has dragged on for months, prompting protests and online petitions that claim to have 90,000 supporters. Developer Ram Realty is still working on a critical habitat plan to satisfy federal wildlife managers. Eagles were taken off state and federal endangered species lists several years ago after conservation led to a dramatic rebound over the last half century. But in Southeast Florida they remain rare. The state has only recorded four nests in the county since 1987. Monroe County has about nine, although the state does not document all nests. Biologists don’t completely understand why, given the proximity of the Everglades and large bays. Florida’s eagle coordinator, Michelle van Deventer, thinks eagles may have avoided Southeast Florida while flocking back to the rest of the state in dramatic numbers — Florida has one of the densest populations in the U.S. outside Alaska — because not enough big trees exist to support nests that can weigh a ton and grow up to 13 feet wide. A 2013 study suggests they lack food needed to support themselves and chicks. In recent years, neighbors say development has gobbled up the Palm Spring North area just north of Miami Lakes, jamming neighborhood roads. And it stands to get much worse. While mounting a fight against the relatively modest mall, called Palm Springs Plaza, and a proposed charter school nearby, another developer announced plans to open the American Dream Mall, a mega mall that hopes to introduce, among other things, indoor snow skiing to muggy South Florida, just across I-75. “They just continue to let development come at the expense of the residents already here,” said Palm Springs North Civic Association President Pat Collado, who said Shapiro originally suggested a Walmart supercenter. “That’s what we’re trying to prevent.” Shapiro, who developed the London Square mall near the Tamiami airport, said he will comply with whatever eagle laws require and has already made concessions to residents: The Walmart won’t operate round-the-clock as originally planned, and a traffic light will be placed on Northwest 87th Avenue, the main road into the neighborhood. He also argued that no neighbors objected when the community council signed off on the rezoning earlier this month. That’s because “the neighborhood is looking at it as the lesser of two evils,” said Mike Rodriguez, a financial services development manager who moved there in 2012 to be near his wife’s parents, longtime residents. “The neighborhood is just tired. ... I was already telling my wife we’re going to have to move.” For Mallo, whose father came from Cuba in the 1960s to raise his family in the neighborhood, the land was a training ground. He remains an avid hunter. His smartphone is like a trophy case, filled with pictures of his boys and wife with wild hogs and alligators. When he first spotted the eagle — another woman photographing them drew his attention — he knew the nest was something special, although exactly what was a mystery until he researched it online. “It was exactly like every Google picture of an eagle nest,” he said. Van Deventer said she has already warned the developer that the gas station, bank, grocery store, shoe store, fitness club and other businesses proposed for the site cannot bother the nest. A 100-foot buffer is generally recommended as long as the nest remains, she said. “We try to make sure the integrity of the nesting tree is not compromised,” she said. Guidelines also restrict work during nesting, which ends in mid-May. Kirkpatrick, the federal wildlife manager, also advised county officials to give the birds a 330-foot buffer during road construction. As for the mall plans, Kirkpatrick said federal officials would carefully evaluate any proposal that dramatically changes the use of nearby land. If the developer built homes, which already surround the pasture on three sides, that wouldn’t change the eagles’ surroundings by much, she said. But a mall? “It’s completely outside what the birds are used to,” she said. “In this case, there’s no other shopping center within 330 feet.” Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/environment/article15527051.html#storylink=cpy","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MIAMI-HERALD-ARTICLE-quot-Make-room-eagles-Walmart-is-coming-quot-td7574084.html","images":0},{"id":"7573392","topic":"7573392","order":1,"title":"Wednesday FEB 5 - Lots of action between 9 and 10:30 AM","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-02-05T18:24:38.521000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"I arrived at the nest a little before 9:00 AM and soon was joined by several visitors including Deborah from Illinois (who hosts the Evanston Peregrine Falcon Watch – https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/evanstonpfwatch/info A Yahoo group that Deborah started in 2009) and Millie (lovlycruzr). At first no adults were present and P Piney 12 was sitting high up in the nest and her little sibling was hunkered down on the other side. At about 9:03 the female (Joy) flew in from the east carrying a large long-legged bird. Within seconds, the male (Pride) flew in from the west. Pride appeared to want to either share in the meal or to feed the eaglets. I think the latter as he has been an excellent provider. However, Joy spread her wings over the prey and rebuffed him. Pride retreated to a perch just above the nest... ....but continued to protest loudly. Joy screamed back in a wailing call that I had not heard before. The eaglets kept low during their parents' confrontation, and Joy turned to resume feeding. Joy tore at the prey as the eaglets waited. P Piney 12 appeared to try grasping the prey with his big yellow foot! The eaglets suddenly seem to be begging to be fed by Pride! Pride returned to the nest but Joy protected the prey They all posed for a family portrait but the eaglets seem distracted. This was a nice mother-daughter moment. Pride moved back up on the perch, then prepared to fly off. I like the interaction between Joy and her oldest nestling. Only 20 minutes later, at 9:45 AM, Pride returned with a fish. The eaglets engaged in a brief confrontation that appeared rather hostile. The older chick suddenly moved towards her sibling, who retreated before the older one seemed to peck at him. P Piney 13 disappears out of sight, with his sister on top. Joy seems suddenly aware that something is amiss.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Wednesday-FEB-5-Lots-of-action-between-9-and-10-30-AM-td7573392.html","images":19},{"id":"7573393","topic":"7573392","order":2,"title":"Re: Wednesday FEB 5 - Lots of action between 9 and 10:30 AM","author":"Desiree","date":"2014-02-05T22:31:58.726000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Thank you Ken you're the best!!!!!!!!!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Wednesday-FEB-5-Lots-of-action-between-9-and-10-30-AM-td7573392.html","images":0},{"id":"7573394","topic":"7573392","order":3,"title":"Re: Wednesday FEB 5 - Lots of action between 9 and 10:30 AM","author":"Jill W","date":"2014-02-06T09:21:20.191000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"What fantastic pics, Ken! I believe both sexes participate in this task. If one of the pair has indeed gone missing, and it is the male, the female is more likely to abandon the nest in search of a mate. A lone male is said to remain more faithful to the nest territory, and try to attract another mate to join him there. Let's be vigilant and continue to report all sightings and activities. This morning, while i was walking in the west Miramar wetlands about 1 1/2 miles SE of the nest, an immature Bald Eagle passed almost directly overhead at 6:55 AM. It was flying from west to east and was being pursued by 3 Fish Crows, one of which flew very close to the eagle. The light was poor but my photos show some characteristics which help determine the age of this eagle, which may or may not be the same one seen by Luis. Immature eagles usually fly north about this time of year. This particular bird appears to be molting into \"second year\" plumage, meaning it is about 1 1/2 years old. Note the ragged trailing edges of its wings, caused by worn juvenile feathers which are being replaced by shorter \"third year\" feathers. The fresh feathers have white patches. Three of the primary feathers in the right wingtip have already been replaced. Others are starting to fill in the longer secondary flight feathers, which produce a bulge evident in the trailing edge close to the body of first year (juvenile) plumage. Also the wing linings (underwing coverts) are mostly new and whiter than in juveniles, where white is more confined to the \"wing-pits\" (axillary feathers). The white feathers also extend over the belly while the upper chest remains dark. With age the bill becomes more yellow and eyes lighten up from black to brown and finally yellow in older eagles, but this is hard to determine. Head will develop white streaks which are more evident in third year plumage.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/June-13-amp-15-Immature-Bald-Eagle-in-vicinity-of-nest-td7576263.html","images":3},{"id":"7576267","topic":"7576263","order":2,"title":"Re: June 13 & 15: Immature Bald Eagle in vicinity of nest","author":"NotToofast","date":"2021-06-19T23:42:17.525000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Beautiful pictures! While waiting by the nest area across in the median, a driver by notified me that the eagles were perched on a dry pine tree east of me. I quickly joined my homolog (Phil M and his wife as they were taking pictures). I took a series of pictures of the eagles on that tree until around 10 o'clock when they flew to the nest. Both eagles were at the nest and proceeded to rearrange a few sticks. They both laid down and finally one moved to an upper branch and the other one stayed laying down. I do not wish to create false expectations, but there is a glimmer of hope worth considering--- At this point it is presumed that the eaglet has not survived. She did have considerable development of flight feathers, as evidences in the photo which shows them trailing out over the left edge of the nest, but I could not document their length in any of the hundreds of photos I took of the nest the day before she disappeared. Could we have miscalculated her age? She occasionally flapped wings but did not venture out on branches (\"branching\"), which usually occurs about 6-7 days before first flight. Some eagles always migrating, some roaming, multiple populations all following different routes. I knew eagles from way up North had to travel south in winter to eat, but we used to live in Newburyport, Mass. There Mass Audubon holds the annual \"Merrimack River Eagle Festival\" in February. I learned there that Mass had its own resident eagles, descendants of reintroduced eaglets brought from Michigan in the early 90s, that didn't have to leave, but as you say, they roamed around after nesting season and are rarely seen in late summer. The Merrimack River never freezes completely, but as the ice narrows it up, it focuses the eagles at the mouth of the river and they can be easily seen fishing the tidal waters, an amazing sight really, because their northern cousins come south too, increasing the numbers of eagles seen in the winter dramatically. Thank you for the detailed explanation!! Regards - Kelly Kelly Heffernan SFAS's Project Perch (978) 412-5313 > *Kelly asked about the locally-nesting eagles here in NE Illinois. Yes, these > tend to stay in the area or move south along the river system depending upon > the severity of the winter. A very timely question, as I had been planning > to write a blog on this subject. > Bald Eagles have complicated migration habits, differing by age of the birds, geographic location and the effects of weather and climate. Their dependence upon fish as a dietary staple figures in on their seasonal movements, as open water is essential and cooler water more desirable, especially for younger birds as it causes the fish to move nearer the surface, making them easier to catch. Adults seem to want to stay around and > defend their territory during the non-breeding season while young birds travel more widely. > Northernmost Bald Eagles such as those in northern Canada typically fly south during the winter, with juveniles and immature birds leading the exodus. They congregate in coastal areas or large rivers and lakes that are > not iced over. In the Northwest, the timing of the salmon run influences post-breeding movement, as many move northward and northwest in late summer, > join Alaskan birds following the spawning salmon southward along the coast, > then linger through the relatively mild winters along the Pacific coast. Bald Eagles from the North Central states such as those at our local nest > in > NE Illinois will wander locally as conditions permit. When winter sets in, > eagles from the north join them, especially at dams and locks along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. While Illinois has only about 30-40 breeding pairs of Bald Eagles, the state's winter population is commonly over 3000 individuals from December through March. > In the Northeast US, Bald Eagles fly south in fall (August through December) > along the Appalachian mountains or follow the Atlantic coast. Many congregate in Chesapeake Bay, and are joined by migrants, mostly immature > birds from more southerly locations. Some Florida immature eagles have been > tracked as far north as New England, returning to Florida in > October-December. Adult Bald Eagles in south Florida tend to wander in the > vicinity of the nesting territory during the non-breeding season (July through September). > Generally, Bald Eagles that nest in the lower 1/3 of the US (below 40 degrees latitude) are said to have less north-south migratory movement. * > ----- > Ken Schneider > Web site: http://rosyfinch.com > Blog: http://rosy-finch.blogspot.com > _______________________________________________ > If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below: > http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/Eagles-near-my-second-home-in-Illinois-tp7573630p7573632.html To start a new topic under Eagle and Wildlife Events and News From Near and Far, email [hidden email] > To unsubscribe from Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida, visit","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Which-eagles-are-migrating-and-where-td7573633.html","images":0},{"id":"7276231","topic":"7276231","order":1,"title":"Saturday, February 11, 8:00 - 9:00 AM nest uncovered, no eaglet(s) visible","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2012-02-11T10:41:44.500000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Mary Lou and I watched for over an hour from a little before 8:00 AM. I don't think there would be any way to be sure where this eagle's nest may be located. PSN would be the nearest, but all reports indicate that they failed to return to breed this season. They well may have relocated. All eagles do not look alike, as we have learned from observing, but the differences can be so slight (eg., a misplaced dark feather) that there is room for disagreement about the identity of any single bird. The first (P Piney 21) hatched about 65 days ago. Eaglets from this nest over the past 9 breeding seasons have fledged, on average, at age of 86 days (Range: 65-92 days, Mode and Median 82 days). All of these dates were based upon ground observations, so there is room for error. This morning (between 8:50 and 9:45 AM) both eaglets were active. The male parent (Pride) was roosting close to the nest on the right support branch. The larger eaglet flapped frequently and hopped up a couple of times. She did not hover (\"helicopter\" or become airborne in place for several wing-beats) and neither has been reported to branch (climb out on limbs). First flight has been observed in seven past seasons, and occurred 4-8 days (average 6.4, Median 6 days) after branching and/or helicoptering was first observed. The two eaglets differ in size. The larger one has a rounded head, a deeper base to its bill, and its gape extends a bit further beneath the eye than that of the smaller one. Presumably the larger was hatched first and is a female (P Piney 21, the 21st known hatchling from this nest). She already looks as big or even bigger than the male parent. The head of P Piney 22 looks smaller and more angular with a low forehead, quite similar to that of the male parent. P Piney 21 (female): P Piney 22 (male): She happens to have a bit more white in her plumage-- a few white streaks on her neck and upper chest and a small white breast patch, but these are individual variations and may not be reliable in telling them apart as they grow. The younger eaglet is presumed to be a male because he has not competed actively with the naturally more aggressive female and they seem to get along quite amicably. This has kept him from being injured and his caring parents have seen that he gets fed even though his sister is always first in line for food. Two females would expend much more energy competing and even fighting, greatly disadvantaging the younger one and could result in starvation or killing of the weaker nest-mate (siblicide). Interestingly, the measurements of eaglets change after their first molt as they enter their second year. Their juvenile flight and tail feathers are actually about 1 -1.5 inches longer than those of adults. This provides them with extra lift as they learn to fly. During the past week, both eaglets have been seen picking at food and presumably eating alone at the nest. I obtained a bonus photo this morning as a Great Blue Heron flew directly over the nest:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MAR-16-Both-eaglets-flapping-wings-td7575268.html","images":6},{"id":"6877288","topic":"6877288","order":1,"title":"Can I see eagles in ...","author":"Erika","date":"2011-10-10T11:24:40.961000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"Hello, We will be visiting Florida in November/December and like to see bald eagles. The Pembroke Pines nest is visible from the north side of Pines Boulevard and also from the landscaped median, from a point about 100 yards east of the near edge of its intersection with NW 209th Avenue, at the right end of the yellow line that I have drawn on the map below. The line is 100 yards long. Park entirely off the roadway and look almost directly to the south from about where the red dot is located, or cross the traffic lane and view from the island. Do not view from the south side of the street, as pedestrians are prohibited at present. The trees obstruct the view of the nest from that side anyway. The nest is in a tall Australian Pine just above the tops of the Melaleuca trees. The adult bird often roost on the top of the trunks of the dead Melaleuca trees to the west of the nest, or in one or two of the taller pines in front of and on either side of the nest, just beyond the electric wires. Do not park on the south side of Pines Boulevard or in any other restricted area, and always entirely off the roadway. No parking to the north on 208th or 209th Avenue, though there may be room on the shoulder of both 208th and 209th on the south side of the highway only. The Post Office parking lot is one long block (0.25 mile) to the west at NW 210th Avenue , on the north side of Pines Boulevard. It does seem as if the public visitation has somewhat waned.......at least when I am there. The visibility of the nest is definitely limited by the growth of the Maleleucas. It also seems as if each time I visit it is quite windy, which impacts the visibility as well with the trees all moving! I have not been going by on weekends, avoiding the problem of last year when cars stopped in the traffic lanes asking for an eagle report. I wish parking was permitted in the paved area west of the nest on the south side as you are far enough from the road to feel safe and people don't stop in traffic for questioning when you are over there. I think last years crowds were in part caused by the fact that someone was almost always there watching. People see someone there with binoculars and stop and the crowd grows. I think the public enjoyed hearing about the eagles from the watchers that came more often and since this year we are trying not to attract attention due to safety concerns and with the lack of parking, the volume of visitors is lower. I think that is a shame as so many people last year were educated about the eagles and their environment and hopefully something can be worked out in the future so that the appreciation of nature can again be fostered through the eagles.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Were-there-any-crowds-around-the-nest-this-past-weekend-And-VOTE-td4788104.html","images":0},{"id":"7289109","topic":"7289109","order":1,"title":"February 15 - hatch day 31 -- only one eaglet","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2012-02-15T16:48:26.236000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"I think we can be quite sure that there is only one eaglet this year. Presumably, that day marked the deposition of the first egg. We might expect the first egg to hatch in about 5 weeks-- January 22 would be the 35th day. Both male and female will share incubation duties. A mate may occasionally bring food to the incubating bird, although the most frequent behavior we may expect is the exchange of incubation duties, which we observed only infrequently last year, and at various times of day. When I first arrived, I could clearly see with binocs, an adult white head low in the nest. After about 5-6 minutes, the white head disappeared, but I did not see a bird fly away. Maybe she or he hunkered down even more because of the cool temperature and fairly strong winds. A couple of times, I saw an adult stand up half-way and then seemed to reposition for incubation. I was able to get a feel for some for the areas on the median that would work for a fairly good view of the nest. I had to leave for about 20 minutes to go to the Walgreens across the street from the nearest gas station (I think it's a Hess) to buy some masking tape for the spotting scope. The second one I bought has the same problem as the first one I bought (both same models, same company, etc.) in that the eye piece part does not connect properly to the scope. I tried to get the scope to work by hiding it very low and slightly hidden behind, on the south side of the shrubs on the median, so that the E. bound traffic would not see me or the scope. Never worked out as I need a new scope or to use a more stable tripod or something. There were no other cars or watchers while I was there except the city bus driver, who slowed down to about 10-15 mph to get a look at the nest. I was prepared to leave as soon as another car arrived. Just a thought.... maybe, some of us could leave a car or two (or more) at Walgreens, Hess or another \"legal\" place to leave a car and have one car \"shuttle\" us to the allowed viewing area so there would be less cars at the site to attract attention? I never saw two adults at the same time while I was there and heard no calling out or noise from any birds. I left a little after 1 PM. We visited the nest at about 9:35 AM and found Phil there. He had visited twice since 8:30 and saw no adults. We watched for 20 minutes and also did not see any adults on nest or any of the visible roosting perches. I am now very pessimistic about not seeing them feeding any eaglets. The calculated hatch date was approximately January 17, based upon December 13 onset of incubation. We have photographic evidence of one being fed on January 19. Then on January 23 I saw two adults flying out together very early on a cold morning, 1 1/2 miles away from the nest. This struck me as very unusual, as the eaglets cannot regulate their temperature and the adults instinctively cover them (or on hot days shield them) so they do not chill or overheat. Pride and Joy always took turns foraging during the early weeks after their eaglets hatched. Often both would be at the nest. Of course Jewel may not follow exactly the same pattern, and she is also less experienced. If there were additional eggs they would have hatched within 3-6 days of the first, but even if the first eaglet failed to survive we would now expect to see feeding at fairly frequent intervals. There has been no photo to confirm that any eaglets have been fed for the past 7 days. I fear there may have been a nesting failure. If infertile eggs are still in the nest we might expect the adults to continue incubating them for several days at least before giving up. We need eyes on the nest in hopes of seeing evidence that one or more eaglets survived!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Adult-eagle-sighted-1-26-2016-td7574369.html","images":0},{"id":"7573589","topic":"7573589","order":1,"title":"Summary of 2013-14 Breeding season available","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-07-20T10:51:49.946000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"I have updated the Eagle Milestone Spreadsheet (Link to it here) to show significant events through the end of the 2013-14 breeding season. Access a USFWS blog site concerning this subject at http://www.fws.gov/news/blog/index.cfm?reint=1 and add your comments about this issue This will be the gist of my letter to USFWS, scroll down to see the AEF comments as well. I feel that the permit issued by USFWS should be cancelled by USFWS or invalidated by the judicial branch. Governmental agencies can’t permit illegal activities. When permits are granted to power companies, or developers they are covered for incidental take of an eagle. That means the landowner or other entity is conducting a normal activity otherwise considered legal. Purposefully killing and eagle is illegal. Are we as a country going to allow every religion to do anything they want even if it is illegal because of their religious beliefs? Purposely killing, persecution, is one of the reasons the eagle ended up on the endangered list in the first place. Didn’t we learn anything from that or is history just doomed to repeat itself? This decision may also encourage other people to take/shoot eagles as this decision devalues them and dilutes the protections they are currently afforded. What is the incidence of this occurring in a non-permitted fashion? Ironically, if you even so much as browse news about eagles you’ll see USFWS is quoted as saying eagles are protected. I can say for sure, that the two eagles which will be sacrificed aren’t. I would like to know how they will be killed and I would like to see a copy of the permit application and the permit. I believe this information should be available to me under the Freedom of Information Act. The American Eagle Foundation http://www.eagles.org Below are some comments from the AEF. AEF encourages citizens to write letters to USFWS. Please see comments below. The AEF of course does NOT agree with that permit. AEF President Al Cecere appeared March 15, on the “Fox and Friends” national TV program in NYC in order to state why such permit should not be issued, You can see the video of that program at http://www.foxnews.com/on-air/fox-friends/index.html#/v/1510268168001/permit-to-kill-an-american-symbol/?playlist_id=86912 . The USFWS already provides adequate means for Native Americans to acquire feathers and other Bald Eagle body parts from its National Eagle Repository (click here) in Colorado. This USFWS policy is further explained in their web site, “How Can I Obtain Eagle Feathers and Other Parts” (click here). The AEF collects all feathers, that are annually molted from its 45 non-releasable educational and captive-breeding eagles, and sends them annually to the USFWS repository. Likewise, any eagles that die at AEF are promptly placed in a freezer for sending intact to the repository. AEF has several concerns about a tribal permit to kill Bald Eagles. Such tribal permits would expand to include Golden Eagles, resulting in demands for killing both species by individuals from many tribes. Even though we believe the majority of Native Americans would consider the eagle too sacred for killing for religious purposes, there are also many who may demand equal rights to such a permit. The Bald Eagle has been a symbol of this nation since 1782, which in itself should be reason enough not to issue a governmental permit to kill them. We encourage you to send your comments to the USFWS Director in Washington, DC, as AEF is also doing... [See contact information above] It was not the U.S. President who issued this permit for killing of our National Symbol. However, it would be good to also express your concerns to him. This NY Daily News article sums the issue up well. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/northern-arapaho-indian-tribe-kill-bald-eagles-article-1.1038792 Please write letters to USFWS and comment on their blog. Make sure to ask for a copy of the permit application and the permit. Also, ask the agency if they have knowledge of this being done without permits. They really need to receive lots of public comment. They say the eagles are protected unfortunately it does not appear so. Daniel M. Ashe, Director U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1849 C Street, NW Washington, DC 20240 And/Or, 2. Thanks again for your interest in this important issue. Feel free to pass on this message to your interested friends and your many conservation contacts for similar action. This year we have 18 nests incubating so far, but one failed a few days shy of hatching so that makes 17, barring any I haven't heard about yet and there are plenty more that I expect will be productive. One nest, in Tarpon Springs, has been under siege by a single adult female and aerial battles have been going on for nearly a week! We've had reports of several sub adults at Fred Howard Park and reports of multiple pairs of adult bald eagles at Derby Lanes in the Gandy area. Several nests have been built but are not being used yet. We do have hatchlings at Bayside Bridge. They are the first to hatch for the second consecutive year after incubating 3 times for 90+ days and being last 3 years ago. They did successfully fend off a competitor during incubation so they get a gold star this year. An ordinance to protect eagles during the development review process was passed last week in Tarpon Springs. Pasco - No parking signs have been approved on Bailee's Bluff Road near the eagles nest at the Progress Energy Power Plant. The tree with the nest fell this summer and the eagles rebuilt in a live pine even closer to the roadside. The nest has been a popular destination, and people can still see the eagles, but they will need to park at one of the two nearby parks or the bait shop. I am advising all that go to that nest to be extremely cautious. Watching eagles and taking pictures of them can be very distracting and we really don't want to see anyone hit by a car out there. Recently there was a very close call which required a law enforcement response. Ultimately, this will curtail some of the intense people activity at the nest and hopefully provide the eagles some peace to raise their young. Pasco County has done their part to be as protective as possible in the buffer zone. Regardless of how tolerant they are, eagles are better off without crowds. The main goal is still to find and fund a safe way for everyone to photograph and enjoy the eagles. A plan has been discussed with Pasco Tourist Development Council to enhance the Great Florida Birding Trail in that area and provide a safe spot for eagle watchers and photographers that adheres to the Bald Eagle Management Plan. This might include a pull off or a viewing platform as well as an eagle festival so I hope everyone will be patient for the time being. It doesn't make it any easier for eagle watch either and no, we don't have free parking passes. I'm still looking for the eagle with the transmitter in the eastern portion of the county. So many eagles, so little time. Hillsborough - activity is sparser than expected. Several cell tower nests are inactive. Where are all the eagles? Hmmm, maybe they went to Tarpon Springs. The big concern I have for Hillsborough is HL43 in Seffner. This nest is under pressure from TECO which is using eminent domain to use a portion of the eagle watchers property too! The new power corridor would be placed in between an old growth forest known as Simmons Hammock and the lake where the eagles fish. Too much of this forest will be lost, including rare plants. TECO has adhered to the Bald Eagle Management Plan, for the most part, staying 660 feet away, except on one side where they are at 330 feet. I personally expect better than that from power companies. I feel they should be better than anyone else when it comes to protecting nests. They were not at the APLIC meeting as far as I know and I do not know if they are even members of the consortium of power companies that aim to protect raptors and other birds. I have so many pictures of osprey nests on TECO lines that I can't count them all. They do have lots of deterrents, but overall, as a citizen observer, I would give TECO a failing grade, a big fat F, on the implementation of their Avian Protection Plans. Most of all, because they won't even sit down at the table and talk with us. Also, HL4, what we call the pony farm nest, is not looking too good. The nest is on a property for sale and the nest tree AND surrounding pines died very quickly. I do see some other pines yellowing on another property so this is probably a natural occurrence. Polk - More information from Polk will be coming from Lake Region Audubon. Thanks for all you do. Have a great holiday season! Please use my new cell number from now on. As I parked at my usual place, I noticed a large bird flying from E to W. I didn't know if it was an eagle or vulture, but it was flying so low and close to the nest, I figured it was probably an eagle. I walked to the dead tree area and there was one on top of a tree. I did not attempt to take a picture of it because it was not in a front tree and my camera has been focusing on the closest tree. The bird would have been a blur. It stayed for about 5 minutes and then flew away to the S. On the nest was the usual. A head popping up now and then, but at 3:55, the eagle stood up preened for a few seconds and seemed to change positions a little before it disappeared again. Mike arrived at about 4:25 and was there until 6. He focused his camera on the nest. I walked to the dead trees after a while and there was not an eagle to be seen. I returned to the nest area and I guess maybe 25 minutes or so later, I walked to the dead trees again and there was an eagle. I took some pictures but I don't know yet if they are going to be OK. I hope a few do, especially some with an added bonus of a woodpecker on a very close tree in the same pic as the eagle. At 6, while I was getting my stuff into the car, I heard eagles crying out. It was pretty dark, but with my binoculars, I was able to see an adult standing on the rim of the nest. When I drove by the dead trees on my way home, the one that had been there for a very long time was no longer there. Mike took quite a few pictures and he will probably post them tonight.
