Dear Mayor Steingold, Honoroable Commissioners, City Manager Spoor, I went back to the park today to check the pole height and check what the route might be in and out for a truck with a lift. I realized that the problem is really much bigger than just the one osprey. The osprey perished because it is impaled on a bird spike. I started looking around and I saw how many bird spikes there are out there. They are even coming up through the osprey platform nests. They are being totally set up to land on bird spikes. In this instance, it is so bad, and the timing is so critical, osprey hormones are running high. They are all just returning to their nests and beginning courtship and mating rituals. I am asking that the City of Safety Harbor remove the spikes immediately. While I was at the park, both my daughter and I saw one of the birds land on its nest and the wing came within a couple of inches of a spike. In one, a spike tears through the webbing of a bird's feet. In another, a dead pelican hangs from the top of a boat piling, the pouch of its bill snagged on a steel prong. Larry O'Brien of Dunedin watched in horror as a seagull swooped low and tried to land on a pole in Anclote Key River Park. \"The spike proceeded to tear his wing right off his body,\" said O'Brien, 60, a boater and birdwatcher. \"I got the bird and took it down, but it had to be euthanized because it was suffering.\" Officials at the Clearwater Audubon Society and the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary are trying to get the message out to local park rangers, marina managers and waterfront residents: Birds and metal spikes don't mix. The metal spikes are usually used to deter birds from roosting on top of poles and pilings, building nests, squawking in the middle of the night and splattering droppings all over the surface below. But the steel spikes that jut out 3 to 10 inches can be harmful to birds, marine bird activists say. \"We really don't want to have these birds unnecessarily hurt when it's something we could easily prevent,\" said Barb Walker, conservation advocacy chair at the Clearwater Audubon Society. People don't have to resign themselves to signs and decks covered in feces, Walker said. There are several less hazardous and environmentally friendly alternatives, including black plastic cones that prevent the birds from roosting but are not sharp enough to put them at risk. There are also bird \"spiders\" with thin, stainless-steel wire arms that are too light for birds to stand on. And, of course, there are always visual deterrents such as scarecrows or plastic birds of prey... When I arrived, close to 5pm, an adult was to the west in the dead trees and the babies were active. I couldn't capture any great shots, but did find two babies in one frame. Also, the adult flew to the nest after circling and picking-up a twig from a near-by perch behind the nest -- see photos. I also was able to film a video of a baby flapping its wings, the first I witness this year. Below are some other photos from the evening of the eagles, and a couple days ago of a white egret a couple miles from the eagle location. See my notes and photos of chicks from past seasons after viewing Greg's photos-- the eaglets appear, to my eye, to be closer to three weeks old than just two weeks. The younger chick would be about three days behind. It certainly would be nice if we could have had that nest camera in place before all this excitement! It seems FPL did not carry through on its assurance to have a camera in place in time for this nesting season. The Mayor's Eagle Steering Committee should be meeting soon to obtain more information about the reason for the delay or failure of installation. FPL supposedly had relented in its opposition, and agreed to allow the camera to be placed on the power pole in front of the nest, and were going to seek the cooperation of Comcast and NBC-6 to carry the broadband signal and host a web site. An alternative would be to place the camera on the high light pole on the north side of the street. It could provide a commanding view of the nest from even higher up. We believe that a governmental entity such as the County or Florida DOT has jurisdiction over it, but ownership and approvals would need to be worked out, and it still would require participation of, and coordination between FPL and Comcast/NBC.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Saturday-Jan-29th-Pics-of-Two-Chicks-amp-Video-of-One-Flapping-Wings-td5974455.html","images":0},{"id":"7575505","topic":"7575505","order":1,"title":"FEB 19 & 26: Eagles over W Miramar and disturbance at nest site","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2020-02-26T14:44:03.798000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Phil reported not seeing any eagles at the nest the past two days. However, there are construction crews taking down the fence and cutting down the brush in front of the nest. On February 19 I just after sunrise got a distant photo of an adult eagle flying Southeast from the direction of the nest towards the large lake in Sunset Lakes ([specific nest-location detail withheld]). I assume it was one of the adults from the Pembroke Pines nest: This morning (February 26), from almost the same position, just about sunrise (6:48 AM) an immature eagle flew over, this time from west to east towards the Harbour Lakes subdivision. Its course was from some point south of the nest. It seems to be a third year bird, as it has a light beak and considerable white on its head and breast, with the dark \"osprey eye\" streak and contrasting dark chest. I don't know how common this may be, but since this nest is so far from water and in a wooded area it seems so unlike all the Osprey nests and roosts I have seen. It is remarkable that the two young birds and the Osprey were said to be all in the nest together. However, in nature, anything is possible. Sharing this with Lynda White. Maybe she has heard of this sort of behavior. We have seen Ospreys chasing adult eagles, carrying fish, back to the nest area. We presumed that the eagle had stolen the fish from the Osprey and it was trying to get it back, or maybe just harassing the eagle in retaliation. Thanks! While I looked there Mary Lou noted some fluttering at the nest but did not see anything different with her binoculars. I returned to the nest and took a few more photos of the female sitting alone on the nest, or so I thought. At home i saw that the male had returned and was barely visible to the left, where the rim of the nest is built up quite high. He is either sitting deep on that side, or roosting very close to the nest. Incubation seems doubtful as both eagles have been seen together roosting away from the nest. Other observers reported seeing the head and yellow bill of an eagle to the left during the past week. One might hypothesize that the young female dumped eggs but does not have a strong enough instinct to care for them and the male is attempting to incubate. Perhaps the bonding process influences the behavior of the male to keep returning to the nest in order to assure that the new female is entirely comfortable there. Or, perhaps the eagles have done this in previous years but we are monitoring the nest more closely, resulting in more reports. In any event, let's start contributing to this new sub-FORUM beginning with observations on and after August 1, and hopefully through the anticipated 2015-2016 breeding season (officially October 1 through May 15th). The eaglet which was rescued Easter morning from PI20 aka \"Hoover's\" nest has a fractured fibula but it isn't too bad and will be okay. This morning when that eaglet was being transported to the Audubon Bird of Prey Center a second eaglet was spotted on the ground by residents in the Dunedin neighborhood. Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary sent another rescuer. The eaglet had managed to move from near the garage of one house to a nearby yard. It hid in the shade under a small wooden structure. How it got over the chain link fence isn't clear but it was probably partially flighted and able to make it to the top of the gate and then back down to the ground, in other words one big hop. One eaglet, believed to be the smallest, remains in the nest tree. Among the remnants of the nest were fish scales and small turtle shells which are common to eagle's nests. Both adults tore at the prey, and then the male continued to feed the eaglet. The female appeared to be the one that flew off to the east. I feared it was being cowed into laying low or even already injured by the older one when I posted my message. Siblicide is one of the eagles' keys to success, as it gives the surviving eaglet a much better chance of becoming an adult. As you may know, the first eaglet is more likely to be a female than a male, and she is larger than the male at all ages. The second is more likely a male, so there is a 1:1 sex balance. The first-hatched, if a female, is more likely to kill a second female, perhaps because it eliminates a competitor while still small and weak. A female and male sequence is the most successful combination for survival, maybe because the male learns its place in the hierarchy and does not challenge the female. This also assures a balance between the number of males and females as adults. If the first-hatched is a male the entire brood has less chance of surviving than if the first is a female. Since south Florida eagles developed an instinct to breed much earlier than those up north, there were inherent advantages-- less heat stress on the eaglets and better prey availability when they are growing fastest in February and March. Let's hope that Pride and Jewel can provide for the single eaglet and see her fledge successfully sometime in late summer. If you have a higher-resolution photo I would like to see it.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/APRIL-10-One-eaglet-seen-in-nest-watch-for-second-td7574461.html","images":0},{"id":"7574465","topic":"7574461","order":4,"title":"Re: APRIL 10: One eaglet seen in nest-- other has been killed","author":"Kathybaker","date":"2016-04-12T07:28:01.054000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"I have a few more but non of them are great. Luis was already there and Phil soon joined us. There was much activity. Both the male (Pride) and female (Jewel) flew out to collect nesting materials. Mostly they were small to medium sized sticks plus a clump of grass with roots and soil attached. One of the adults appeared to actually tamp down the clod of sod. Luis saw a few instances of sticks falling out of the nest, no surprise as the nest is poorly sited on a single large almost horizontal limb with only one smaller branch and a few surrounding twigs for support. They do not yet have a visible platform-- they will need more large sticks for that. Tropical Storm Eta blew off many of the dead branches, as I noted in our own local woodland. The eagles were trying, unsuccessfully, to snap off living wood atop an Australian Pine to the west of the nest site. Photography was challenging, as the cloudless sky and bright sun caused shadows which over-exposed their white heads, and their broad wings cast deep shadows. I do not hold much hope that this new nest will succeed. They never tried to fix the old nest which has been occupied at least since 2008 and probably a year or two before it was located by ground observers. Maybe I'll start at the end and say it was an exhilarating day on all counts! Ok, Trisha, I'm trying to decipher your notes... Al was there at 8:25AM, with Hope in the top of a pine (the nest tree?), and Justice in the nest. At 8:30 Justice flew east, Hope stayed put. Trisha and I arrived moments apart at about 9:30. At 9:35 an adult flew in with a food drop, with Justice hot on her/his trail. Hope of course came right in from her high perch. It seemed to be a small portion, as the chicks ate quickly, and did not seem satisfied. They continued to be very vocal. We all felt that the parent had to be close by, but unseen by us, for them to be calling so much. The chicks then rested until 10:20, when someone flew west. This chick returned almost immediately, as the parent made another drop of a fish. At 10:37 both juveniles flew east, then soared high to the north. We were all set to leave then and were crossing the street, when over our heads from the north came all 3 of them, heading for the nest! The parent made another drop then, which was at about 10:50, then flew to the old favorite perch of the pine with the long vertical branch to the east of the nest. The parent stayed there for about 10 minutes (with no hassle from the mockers or grackles), then flew south. At 11:22 1 kid flew west, the sibling stayed behind. At 11:40 Justice flew to the \"night perch\" to the east of the nest. Then, at 11:45 a parent made yet another food drop! Justice came straight in from his perch to the east, and Hope appeared out of nowhere to feed again. They were both in the nest when we all left at noon. 4 food drops in about a 2 hour window - amazing! The job of finding food for these growing kids must be exhausting for the parents. Trisha and I weren't done with birds yet. We captured an injured cattle egret (broken wing), on Sheridan by 75, and took it to Flamingo Gardens. We were told that it was an old injury, as the break was all calcified; so the wing is to remain that way. Now our little friend will be part of the free flight aviary they have. I can't think of a better way to spend my day off...","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/The-nest-Tuesday-5-12-09-td2874915.html","images":0},{"id":"2878813","topic":"2874915","order":2,"title":"Re: The nest Tuesday 5/12/09","author":"Kathy","date":"2009-05-12T23:29:42.580000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Wow what a great post!! I thought I had found only one juvenile roosting on the nest support branch. It appeared to be the female of the two. She called out frequently and sometimes the second eaglet answered, at first seeming to be from nearby but out of sight. However, my photos show that the male eaglet was hidden right next to her. The tip of his bill and his back are visible: Suddenly At about 8:28 both started to call excitedly. There was a flurry of wings above the nest for only a few seconds. Although I did not see or hear an adult I suspected that a very quick prey drop had occurred. The excitement appeared to displace the female from her roosting spot. The female eaglet flew down from the roost, which was just above the nest, down to the nest and begin tearing at and eating a prey item. It is possible that in the flurry of activity just during those moments that an adult had dropped prey in the nest. However I never saw or heard the adult and the only calls I heard were the excited calls of the eaglets. Judging by the paltry meal of mostly bones, a food drop probably did not happen at all. The male eaglet continued roosting above while the female ate: After about 3-4 minutes female eaglet then flew up and again roosted right next to the darker-plumage male. Almost immediately the male flew down to the nest and seemed to be eating for a minute or two. The female then flew down and the male moved to the far right of the nest and then disappeared. Not sure whether the male flew out and away to the rear of the nest or simply moved behind the nest. Then at about 8:40 I heard an adult call briefly and the female immature flew off to the south east from the nest. As I was departing at 8:43, a large cottonmouth moccasin appeared on the sidewalk right in front of the nest and I got pictures of that.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/June-25-Both-Eaglets-picking-bones-in-nest-td7575585.html","images":9},{"id":"7573708","topic":"7573708","order":1,"title":"Bald Eagle repeatedly Circling vicinity of Dykes and Pines one week ago","author":"NancyB","date":"2014-11-29T11:29:48.538000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"A friend told me that approximately one week ago she observed a Bald Eagle repeatedly circling in the air in the vicinity of Pines and Dykes. It stayed there over an hour, and as the sun rose higher and the heat increased, the adult flew east through the woods, circling, and finally landed in the tall pine in the northeast corner of the nest woods. Just as Tom, Humberto and I hustled down there, it flew to the other favored perch along the wires, just east of the nest. It tucked back in a shady spot on the branch, panting a little in the heat. I watched the adult very closely, noticing any looks or movements. Several people walked up for photos, some even in the grassy area. The eagle intently watched, but never appeared threatened or made a sudden move away from the approaching human. Several very loud groups of motorcycles also roared by with the same response from the eagle....interest, but no signs of alarm. I contrasted this response with an Osprey that I tried to photograph on the way to the nest just outside my neighborhood in Weston, that was sitting on top of a light pole along the road. As I pulled off the road the Osprey seemed to tense and watch me with a very concerned look. I stayed in the car hoping it would stay on the pole so I could get a picture. As I put the window down it began calling in a startled manner and as I lifted the camera, quickly took off in the opposite direction. I have had the same response as the Osprey from most other birds of prey. I wonder if the eagles hold their ground as we approach due to protecting the nest area or just so many people with cameras taking pictures that they are used to us? I frequently see the Osprey on the light pole and it flies each time I try to get a photo....whether from the car or on foot. Are the eagles so at the top of the \"food chain\" that they have less fear than other birds? Were they so used to people that they chose the nest location along a busy highway, or did their tolerance of humans develop after their choice of a nest location? Just some questions and/or food for thought that occurred to me as I watched the adult watching us yesterday morning.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-1-Nov-09-7-30-10am-One-adult-in-nest-area-td3934420.html","images":0},{"id":"3935652","topic":"3934420","order":2,"title":"Re: Sunday, 1 Nov. 09, 7:30-10am, One adult in nest area","author":"Jill W","date":"2009-11-02T19:26:13.953000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Hmmm.. Naples resident Bob Bodemann called local authorities when he noticed the bird Sunday morning in his yard off 14th Avenue South. A mating pair and their two young occupy a nest in a Norfolk Pine. He had first seen the bird sitting on his lawn that morning. \"It's leg was chewed up,\" Bodemann said. \"I thought 'Oh man,' but it flew off.\" Then he saw it a second time — entangled in fishing line with a lure in its back. \"I was about to leave the house,\" Bodemann said. \"When I looked up, the baby was just hanging there.\" Naples Firefighters, city beach patrol officers and a wildlife team from the Conservancy of Southwest Florida arrived to help around 9:30 a.m. Firefighters scaled a 70-foot ladder to get to the eagle. For 45 minutes, rescuers struggled to untangle the bird, which beat its wings and swung out of reach. \"The bird obviously started hesitating and freaking out severely and trying to get out of the situation,\" Beach Patrol Specialist Casey Bollenback said. Bodemann said the eagle was \"huge.\" \"The talons were as big as (the firefighters') hands,\" he said. After the struggle, the fishing line snapped and the bird flew off, wrote Joanna Fitzgerald, director of the conservancy's wildlife hospital, who pens a weekly column for the Daily News. Bodemann said about 150 feet of fishing line was taken off the animal but rescuers believe the lure might still be stuck in its back. Bollenback said a scan from the ground using binoculars didn't show a lure. Neighbors, are keeping an eye out for the bird in case it needs more help. But Bodemann said he believes the eagles are all in good health. \"I've been seeing one of the pair and the babies,\" Bodemann said. \"I think I'm seeing different ones.\" Bodemann applauded authorities who arrived in less than 20 minutes. \"They just shot down here,\" he said. \"I figured this was an attaboy for the fire department.\" © 2013 Scripps Newspaper Group — Online","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Rescuers-save-bald-eagle-entangled-in-fishing-line-hanging-from-tree-td7572938.html","images":1},{"id":"7574666","topic":"7574666","order":1,"title":"MLK Weekend","author":"MikeB3D","date":"2017-01-18T20:23:24.723000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"I didn't see the little head peeking out from the nest while I was there.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MLK-Weekend-td7574666.html","images":2},{"id":"7573899","topic":"7573899","order":1,"title":"JAN 6: immature #2 in nest at 9:45 AM as Pride looks on","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-01-06T12:46:01.998000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Just as we pulled up to the nest we saw an immature bird on the nest, standing up and appearing restless as if ready to fly. In a quick look with the binoculars I could see some white on its head but it seemed to be more extensive than that of the early 5th year bird (\"Newfee\"). I could not determine the color of its bill. Mary Lou thought its head looked very dark from her binocular view. Alberto's photo of an immature on December 31 did not provide a good view of its bill. I now think it had more white on its breast and maybe more dark in its crown than \"Newfee.\" Al's photo taken that same day definitely showed an immature on the nest that was not \"Newfee,\" as it had the appearance of a 4th year plumage. I got my camera out but the sun was so strong that I could not see the nest until my progressive lenses kicked in. Mary Lou was watching from the car and saw the eagle jump/fly to the nest supporting branch just to the right and about 5 feet from the nest. I got a couple of quick shots and almost immediately the eagle flew back away from the nest to the right (SW). I checked and there was no eagle on the Melaleucas to the west. In the meantime, the adult male (Pride) was roosting along the road in the pine just left (east) of the nest tree. After about 5 minutes he flew off to the southeast, cut back towards the road and tried to roost on some flimsy top branches next to the roost tree, but immediately flew back out of sight to the south. My photos do not show the entire head, but the lower neck is definitely dark and speckled with some white. The dark on its tail tips and undertail coverts seems more extensive than on \"Newfee.\" Alberto, if you happened to get any shots of the immature's under-tail pattern, please post.
