I watched from about 9:10 until 9:40 AM today. I had stopped by on NOV 30, watched for about 1/2 hour between 9:00 and 9:45 AM and found no activity although I could not entirely rule out that an adult might be on the nest, as the rim, especially the left (east) side has been built up quite high.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/PP-Female-deep-in-nest-DEC-4th-amp-7th-eggs-probably-present-td7575152.html","images":0},{"id":"7575153","topic":"7575152","order":2,"title":"Re: PP Female deep in nest DEC 4th & 7th-- eggs probably present","author":"Sally","date":"2018-12-08T11:52:44.249000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2018–2019","text":"Thanks for the good news Ken. Follow the link below, copy and individualize the model e-mail to your legislators to voice your support for increased funding. The Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee has passed a bill to reauthorize the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act at higher funding levels. The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee has passed S. 690, which reauthorizes the existing Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act(NMBCA) at significantly higher levels to meet the growing needs of our migrant birds, many of which are in rapid decline. Senate Environment and Public Works Ranking Member, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), a frequent critic of providing more government funding for conservation programs raised an objection to the higher authorization levels in the bill. The bipartisan bill, sponsored by Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Michael Crapo (R-ID), now moves to debate in the full Senate. Representative Ron Kind (D-WI) has introduced similar legislation in the House of Representatives.... NMBCA supports partnership programs to conserve 341 species of migratory birds in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean, where approximately five billion birds of over 500 species, including some of the most endangered birds in North America, spend their winters. Projects include habitat restoration, research and monitoring, law enforcement, and outreach and education. Between 2002 and 2008, the program supported 260 projects coordinated by partners in 48 U.S. states/territories and 36 countries. Projects involving land conservation have affected approximately three million acres of bird habitat. This bill would increase funding for the program from $6 million to $20 million. Projects receiving federal money must raise $3 in private money for every federal dollar they receive. In the past, many qualifying projects have gone unfunded because the federal matching grants program had run out of funds. If you have not done so already, please consider contacting your representatives (here or here) and ask that they support this worthy program. The images should be in JPEG or JPG format. (Other file types may also be accepted, but not RAW images). There are two basic ways to include photos in your post: 1. Post photo from your computer. Load them unto your computer and know how to find their location in the disk. You should crop and edit the photo as desired, and save it with a file name that is easily recognized. Just click on the \"Insert Image\" button above your post, and then select \"Choose File.\" This will allow you to search your hard drive and select the desired photo. After you select your image, you need to re-size it as it will probably be too big to display on the computer screen. Pick the \"Medium\" or \"Big\" size and allow the image to \"float.\" Then click on \"Insert Image.\" This places a line of Nabble code in your message. You can then select \"Preview Message\" to view the image and be sure it looks the way you want it to. If OK, then simply \"Post Message.\" 2. Post photos from an Internet Web page. If your image is already on an internet photo sharing web page such as FLICKR, simply copy the image's web location (URL). The image must be in JPG or JPEG format, so do not simply copy it directly from its initial presentation format. In FLICKR, left click on the photo and choose the desired size image-- 640 or 800 px works fine. Then display the chosen size-- this will now have a URL that ends in .jpg-- simply right-click to copy the image's URL. Paste the URL into the box in the FORUM \"Insert Image\" menu. Again, in order to see the photo posting menu you must register into the FORUM using the link at the top of the web page. Luis had visited the nest area earlier, at 8:00 AM, and found both of the pair roosting on the large lone[specific nest-location detail withheld].","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Adults-at-nest-OCT-26-amp-27-td7575108.html","images":3},{"id":"7576489","topic":"7576489","order":1,"title":"Nest Visit 3-6-2022","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2022-03-08T10:29:13.134000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Here's a few short videos of the nest on a windy day, the Eaglet was wingersizing, and you can sometimes see the adult to the far right on a branch hiding behind the branches, she seems to like that spot, she's been there for the past 2 weeks when I go to check on them. https://img.gg/KSL9iuR","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-Visit-3-6-2022-td7576489.html","images":0},{"id":"7576490","topic":"7576489","order":2,"title":"Re: Nest Visit 3-6-2022","author":"Speechykeane","date":"2022-03-11T19:44:08.513000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Are there two eaglets or only one?","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-Visit-3-6-2022-td7576489.html","images":0},{"id":"7576493","topic":"7576489","order":3,"title":"Re: Nest Visit 3-6-2022","author":"Sally","date":"2022-03-12T12:57:46.908000-05:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"An observer reported on ebird.org that there were two eaglets seen in nest on March 11.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-Visit-3-6-2022-td7576489.html","images":0},{"id":"7576494","topic":"7576489","order":4,"title":"Re: Nest Visit 3-6-2022","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2022-03-13T13:05:47.309000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hello, There is 2 for sure","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-Visit-3-6-2022-td7576489.html","images":0},{"id":"7575164","topic":"7575164","order":1,"title":"Swallows fly with the eagle","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-12-27T14:33:59.312000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2018–2019","text":"The first egg was deposited about December 4-6th, if ground observations are accurate. This means we can expect it to hatch in 5 weeks (35 days), which would be around January 9-10th. I arrived at the nest this morning at about 9:00 AM. Phil and Luis were already there, looking up to the sky. They told me that had witnessed an incubation exchange. The male (Pride) had taken over duties and his mate (Jewel) stretched her wings and circled overhead. She was joined by a flock of 10-15 Tree Swallows which flew with her as she soared. They maintained the same altitude and followed her around a couple of times. They seemed not have any hostile intent and the eagle was indifferent to their presence. Pride remained deep in the nest. Happily, the branch which fell down in front of the nest during the wind storm has disappeared, so the nest is again in full view and shows no signs of damage. Last season ended with the nest totally collapsing one eaglet perished and I believe the other eaglet did survive and depart the area. This year has been eventful: Pride perished. He never returned this season. Jewel has a new mate. He appears to be a young male. They had a great deal of difficulty building a nest. The nest is **** (out in the open). Sadly there are many photographers visiting the nest. Many that only care about getting photos. I have counted as many as 40+ photographers in one morning. All within 50’ of the nest. I can’t believe the nest hasn’t fallen. It is on a branch that doesn’t appear too sturdy. We have been having some wind and rain the past several days. The nest has sustained some damage but not to bad. I will go by on my way to church this morning. I haven’t heard any chatter about the city selling the land. One quickly left while the other stayed for while. The eaglets remained alone in the nest for this entire time with no visitations. During the first hour or so, the eaglets stayed low in the nest (sleeping?) with just the occasional head or wing glimpse. Then each began to rise and stretch. Several of the eaglets stood on the edge of the nest and flapped quite a bit. The three finally showed themselves all at once, but only for a second or so. The remainder of the time only one or two were visible together. The three are distinctly discernible - the oldest is dark with clear mottled white markings on the underside of its wings and no apparent \"baby feathers\"; the youngest is still covered in its fuzzy feathers on its head and wings and the underside of its wings have not developed the distinct mottled white markings; the middle sibling, as expected is somewhere between these two states but looks more like the older one, ie it is dark and has just a few \"baby feathers\" but the mottled white markings on the underside of the wings are not as clear and distinct. I met another nest watcher and photographer, Jim. He stayed the entire time I was there and hopefully will contribute to this forum in the future. Also, Smith joined us around 11am or so. To our surprise, around 10am or so, a visitor walked up on us as we were photographing the chicks and noted a parent eagle was in a tree right in front of us! Its prescence was masked from our view by the concrete power pole. It had been keeping an eye on the nest the entire time. He hadn't seen any eagles. At 9:15 we were rewarded with a showing from Hope??, who flew in from the east to a perch on a pine branch just west of the nest tree. Trisha arrived shortly after. I then walked down to the dead trees to look for the sibling. Yes, Justice?? was there kind of far back, but very visible. At about 9:50 both chicks started calling, and a parent flew in with what must have been a meager food drop. We think a small fish, or part of one. The chicks went directly to the nest tree; however one remained in a branch above the nest, never dropping down to eat. I say a meager offering, as both chicks continued to call for something more substantial. The parent had flown to the same branch the chick had been on prior to the feeding, cleaning the beak and just looking beautiful. Some time after, a kid left the nest tree, flew up, and ousted the parent from the perch. It was a really cool site to behold. Wings everywhere! The parent took off and landed way on top of a pine to the east. Trisha got some great footage of this encounter. The parent then flew off to the east. At some point, both chicks were on the same western pine branch, when an adult came in from the west. It flew right over Trisha and Fernando's heads, made a drop and flew to the near eastern perch. You can really tell when an adult is in the vicinity by the voices of the kids. They announce the parent coming, so we can actually can be ready to be looking for the incoming. It's really interesting to see this family interaction now. And those kids do seem to be together most always. If not together, very near. They don't seem to be in any big hurry to head out on their own. Meals served at home seem to suit them just fine. The brood patch is an area on the breast area of the bald eagle that develops shortly before the female lays the eggs. The hormonal changes cause the feathering in this area to fall out leaving a patch of bare skin. In the brood patch area there is greater water flow and some swelling to allow the blood flow to warm the larger area. The increased flow of blood in the area creates warmth for incubation. Both the male and the female bald eagle develop a brood patch, but typically the female’s is the larger as she assumes more of the incubation duties. The brood patch helps insure the eggs incubation temperature is maintained at 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit!\" Click on this link to view the photo","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-9-Bald-Eagle-brood-patch-td7575458.html","images":1},{"id":"7574122","topic":"7574122","order":1,"title":"Saturday 5-16-15 They were at the nest","author":"LuisEagles","date":"2015-05-16T21:11:42.041000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Today early in the morning they kept working on the nest, moving branches and then resting by the branches close and above the nest. The number of active bald eagle nests in Florida hit 1,457 in the latest count, up nearly 9 percent from 2008, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced Tuesday, in a news conference timed for eve of the July 4 holiday. A well-known eagle'[specific nest-location detail withheld] in Pembroke Pines. In Palm Beach County, which offers more of the tall pine trees favored by eagles, there are now 14 nests, four of which were discovered last year. After a rough 150 years or so, when Florida's eagles were hunted for feathers for ladies' hats, bulldozed out of their trees for housing developments and – most important – poisoned with the insecticide DDT, the majestic birds have staged one of the most impressive recoveries of any species. Down to 88 active nests in 1973, they have repopulated their old range and established nests on the fringes of cities. \"I think very few people know how close the nation came in the 1960s to losing its national symbol to extinction,\" said Charles Lee, advocacy director for Audubon of Florida, which operates a birds of prey center in Maitland that has rehabilitated and returned to the wild 450 bald eagles. The nest in Pembroke Pines, west of Interstate 75, has seen at least nine eaglets hatch, said Ken Schneider, a member of South Florida Audubon who blogs at rosyfinch.com. Although the first eight successfully flew off, the most recent eaglet, hatched in January, did not. \"It did well but disappeared suddenly when it was about 62 days old,\" Schneider said. \"It was not quite ready for flight. We searched for it under and around the nest to no avail, and never saw it again.\" Florida eagles are up to 20 percent smaller than their northern cousins. But they are abundant, representing the largest eagle population in the United States, outside of Minnesota and Alaska. \"I think the reason we have so many is they have good foraging opportunities,\" said Michelle van Deventer, the wildlife agency's Bald Eagle Management Plan coordinator. \"About 80 percent of their diet is fish, and Florida being surrounded by water gives them lots of opportunities to find their favorite food.\" Despite the banning of DDT, threats remain. Once the economy recovers, land development may crank into gear again. Although it's illegal to destroy an eagle's nest, state law allows development within 660 feet of one, provided the developer takes steps to minimize the impact. Lee called for the federal government to move forward with funding the planned Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge, which would be assembled from agricultural land north of Lake Okeechobee. With lakes, rivers, open range and tall trees, this is ideal bald eagle habitat, he said. About 600 active nests stand in Osceola, Polk, Okeechobee and Orange counties – more than the total that existed in the lower 48 states in the mid-1960s, he said. \"The concern that we have for the eagle is loss of habitat. We already are seeing competition for nesting sites and signs in some areas that development is excluding nesting sites and pushing nesting sites together.\" [email withheld], [phone withheld] Copyright © 2012, South Florida Sun-Sentinel Click here to see full article with photos and links","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sun-Sentinel-Article-Bald-eagles-make-impressive-recovery-in-Florida-td7572771.html","images":0},{"id":"7572772","topic":"7572771","order":2,"title":"Re: Sun-Sentinel Article: Bald eagles make impressive recovery in Florida","author":"Georgia","date":"2012-07-05T15:33:02.261000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"This is encouraging. However there are many other threats. Read the news from Decorah, Iowa on July 3. We are very sorry to announce that D12 is dead. D12 was found electrocuted at the base of a power pole on a Sunday morning. We notified the power company, who modified the top of that pole on Sunday and several other poles in the area on Monday. As of this morning, they are continuing to identify and modify poles to make them raptor safe. If you find an electrocuted raptor or other bird by a pole, take it to the nearest wildlife center (if it is still alive) and contact your state DNR or local game warden and the utility company that owns the pole. You will need to: 1. Provide information about the dead or injured bird. 2. Identify the nearest pole to the electrocuted raptor by the pole identification number (on the pole itself) and local landmarks such as cross streets or street addresses (if applicable). Include as many specifics as you can regarding the species and the incident. If possible, take photographs of the raptor and the pole to submit with your reports and notes. Georgia Power lines themselves are not an electrocution hazard for birds (birds can and do sit on wires), but unshielded poles can be dangerous. The Avian Protection Plan Guidelines include information on raptor safe poles and modification of existing poles. New structures are fairly safe, but older poles may not be. Older poles may have been installed either before people were aware of electrocution hazards to wildlife, or during the decline of raptor populations in America, when interaction was less likely. That is very sad news about the electrocution death of the oldest of the three Decorah eaglets. In the case of the FPL distribution lines directly in front of the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle nest, the company has taken all possible precautions. For example, insulation has been extended along the wires well beyond the poles. Despite this, there is always the chance that an eagle's wing tips may make simultaneous contact between two live wires or one and a grounded object. Wires may be a direct hazard if an eagle fails to see them and collides. To reduce the risk of such a collision, FPL placed bright yellow \"curly-Q's\" on the wires to increase their visibility to birds. A couple of years ago I saw one of the local eaglets attempt to roost on the top wire immediately in front of the nest. It perched only momentarily and then flew off. Only about 1 in 10 eagles survive a full year after their first flight. Most are said to die of starvation after leaving the care of their parents. (See this recent post) . Since young eagles are not adept hunters they seek the company of vultures, in search of carrion. Eating road-kill, they may be struck by motor vehicles.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sun-Sentinel-Article-Bald-eagles-make-impressive-recovery-in-Florida-td7572771.html","images":0},{"id":"7576272","topic":"7576272","order":1,"title":"AUG 7: Adult flying over west Miramar","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2021-08-08T09:53:44.769000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"At 7:12 AM (about 25 minutes after sunrise) an adult flew quite low overhead in the wetlands about 1 1/2 mile SE of the nest. I saw the same behavior-- the larger chick moved rapidly from left to right. It did this a couple of times. First, I thought it was fighting with the younger on, but then the little head popped up at the far left side of the nest. One parent was roosting on the melaleucas when I got there. There were about 15 people at that end and another 20 or so at the nest site. No one walked inside the pylons. The adult flew and only about 5 or 10 minutes later (about 1:30 PM) an adult came in with prey. Looked like a long thin thing-- I thought too fat for a snake, too skinny and long for a tilapia. Some said it was a snake and others thought maybe an iguana. The adult seemed to just drop it into the nest, then later was reaching down. The smaller chick was still on the far left side, behind the adult. The adult flew off after about 20 minutes. Both chicks popped up and the larger one did a lot of wing flapping. Then the smaller flapped for a while while the big one just watched it. It was hot and very windy. These difficult decisions are not made lightly and are discussed with a consulting vet and US Fish and Wildlife to determine what is best for the bird and their future quality of life. While this is not the outcome we all hoped for, we are grateful to those who watched this nest and helped rescue this young bird when her nest collapsed. The prognosis for the sibling who also has a wing fracture is still uncertain, but we are doing our best to give it every opportunity to heal and get a second chance at life. We appreciate your support and understanding.” This was my first photo of P Piney 27, on March 18, exactly one month before he (we assumed a male because of its slower growth and passive behavior in the nest) fell from the nest. (That little guy must wonder what is going when only 24hrs ago it had to wait to get its food from the left overs of its older and larger sibling.) He explained that the eaglets have enough food in their \"crops\" (?) to last 2 days. The parents want the flying chick to return to the nest....so instead of feeding it wherever it is in the trees they want it to follow them or come back to the nest and food is the motivator.....very smart parents! Thanks so much to Brian and Gretta for spending 3 hours in the hot, hot, woods (along with Ken) to actually spot our lost eaglet and reassure us it was ok and in the area and would probably be back in the nest soon. We only saw 2 with absolute certainty. One incident in question happened when all of a sudden an eaglet flew low through the woods heading due north, straight at our faces. It tried to land on the top power wire but I began screaming and waving my arms and it abandoned that idea and made a big circle to the east and then south. The 3 of us took off trying to see if/where it landed. We couldn't spot it again and when we got back to the nest there was only 1 eaglet, so we can't confirm seeing all 3 at 1 time. There were also times when 2 were in the nest and we heard calling that seemed to come farther away than the nest....but no visual. The adults made several drops....one time almost 2 hrs between feedings. The 2 eaglets are fighting a lot in the nest over the food. It seems to be smaller portions and they both want it first. They keep talking loudly and stealing the food and moving it away from the other eaglet with lots of wing flapping. I really didn't see this much aggression with Hope and Justice. I wondered if the smaller eaglet, even if it is in the area and flying would be allowed to land in the nest by its older siblings. As upsetting as it is to see only 2 eaglets, a watcher told me some information that is of equal concern. He has seen a man with a beard, over 200 lbs, going under the fence and back towards the nest several times. He said he has climbing spikes on his shoes and a jack device. The last time he saw him he confronted the man, who told him he was from \"the city.\" He was not in a city truck and could not show him an ID. The watcher, who lives in the area and has seen the eagles there for many years gave a policewoman who stopped by all the information. She wrote it up and said they would be patrolling and watching for him! She stressed that tampering with the eagles is a federal offense. Please observe as often as you are able, not only looking for the 3rd eaglet, but watching for this man as well.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Tuesday-27-Apr-2010-9am-2pm-td4971560.html","images":0},{"id":"4973898","topic":"4971560","order":2,"title":"Re: Tuesday, 27 Apr 2010, 9am-2pm","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2010-04-28T07:18:01.439000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Good post, Trisha. The eagles must have felt like fashion models as we snapped shot after shot, along with a new watcher, Umberto, who has been observing various adult eagles in other locations in Broward County. Our eagle \"babies\" are losing their black beaks and are acquiring the orange coloration of their parents. A short rain shower later and the juveniles took off as an adult brought a meal. In a terribly fuzzy, very enlarged picture I took we could see the adult carrying a fuzzy, gray, roundly shaped \"something\" that fit right between its feet. It was interesting in that the eagle was holding it very differently than a fish. Fish hang down and are clearly visible. This meal was held in its talons, tight up against the underside of the bird. It would be hard to see from any angle other than from the rear...where my shot was taken. I think that must be why so often the adults fly in and we don't see any prey, but the siblings are definitely eating after the parent departs the nest. I didn't know if anyone else had reported that the big wooden signs were removed last week. The paper signage was falling off and not really visible anymore. Hopefully we can acquire something of a more permanent nature, as visitors still come to the nest, many first timers, who now don't know where to look.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-17-May-09-8-30-11-am-td2924823.html","images":1},{"id":"2925655","topic":"2924823","order":2,"title":"Re: Sunday, 17 May 09, 8:30-11 am","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2009-05-17T17:03:34.442000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Trisha, You posted a picture; and a great one at that!
