Look at my checklist and click the map to see where I was. Where is your nest from there? Since eagles are biologic creatures, anything is possible. Generally they do not lay a second clutch of eggs unless they lose them very early during incubation. It is now so late in the natural breeding cycle for our local eagles that the chance for successfully hatching and raising a second brood would probably be remote. Everyone should keep a watchful eye on their behavior. Is one member of the pair deep on the nest at all times? Last season we wondered whether Jewel may have deposited one or more eggs but lacked the brooding instinct because she was so young. Pride spent quite a bit of time sitting on the nest. Even if there were viable eggs it is quite impossible for one adult to adequately incubate them. The male develops a brood patch but it is not as large as that of the female, making it all the more difficult to properly cover the eggs.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagles-on-nest-td7574398.html","images":0},{"id":"7574403","topic":"7574398","order":5,"title":"Re: Eagles on nest","author":"Kathybaker","date":"2016-02-15T19:56:50.923000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Hi in this picture you can see that she or he is down in the nest. That appears to be the male, Pride, based upon the configuration of the bill and forehead, nearly in a straight line. Jewel tends to have a more sloping forehead. However, they can erect and flatten their feathers to sometimes make it difficult to distinguish between them. Last season Pride often sat on the nest. Early on we felt he was trying to entice Jewel to come to the nest, as he also brought offerings of food. Then we wondered if he was trying to incubate one or more eggs which Jewel had neglected. Jewel was very faithful at her incubation duties this season, right up to and for a few days after the storm caused the branch to land on the nest. I hope we get additional reports to help us understand how persistently either of the pair are sitting deep in the nest. The right side of the nest is now more visible, either because many of the needles have fallen off the branch or the eagles have moved it somewhat.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagles-on-nest-td7574398.html","images":0},{"id":"7574405","topic":"7574398","order":7,"title":"Re: Eagles on nest","author":"Kathybaker","date":"2016-02-16T07:48:12.964000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Thanks for the info, and Ill keep watching simply because I love it.(: Can you suggest a good book so I can educate my self on these beautiful Birds. December 4 or 13th?","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-12-30T16:34:52.864000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2010–2011","text":"Unlike the past two breeding seasons, this year we cannot be sure of the date when the first egg was laid. A complicating factor has been the nest structure, as the incubating adult is usually completely hidden from view. In past years we could see the adult between the branches, even if the top of its head was not visible. Now the front rim of the nest seems to entirely obscure the view of the incubating adult. Perhaps the eggs are positioned more to the rear of the nest, which could contribute to the difficulty in seeing whether a bird is on the nest. Further, four cold fronts have passed through since early December. Swaying trees have made it very hard to get a good view of the nest as well as the comings and goings of the adults. Inclement weather also discouraged observers from spending as much time at the nest site. On November 29 I photographed the pair mating on the nest and they were definitely not incubating. The next report, by Trisha, was on December 4, when one adult was seen to assume a position deep in the nest for about 3 1/2 hours, repositioning itself at least once. Then it briefly flew off without another adult picking up incubation duties. The adult then returned to the nest and sat very low again. This was highly suggestive of incubation behavior. Two days later, the nest appeared to be vacant. An adult flew in with a fish and I distinctly heard the calls of two eagles. I never saw two birds at once, as there were high winds and it was very difficult to see what was happening at the nest. The next view I obtained was of an adult eating a prey item on the nest. After 15 minutes or so it peered into the nest and sat rather high, not the typical low incubation position. Later that day (December 6), Jill saw no eagles in the nest area, and she was quite sure that the nest was empty. Usually the incubating bird will stand up briefly at intervals to reposition itself, thus revealing its presence. Often it looks down into the nest and seems to be rearranging the eggs or nesting materials before settling down again, but this behavior was not observed. The next observation was by Jill, on December 11, when she heard an eagle calling, but did not see any in the area. Mary Lou and I made two visits on December 12 and also saw no eagles and believed that the nest was empty. On December 13, Jill observed the top of an adult's head above the nest rim, an almost certain sign that incubation was underway. Since then, either incubation behavior has been confirmed or observers failed to see any bird on the nest. This means that the eggs may have been laid as early as (on or before) December 4, or as late as December 13. Eggs were laid on December 13 and 18 in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Since incubation takes 5 weeks, the eggs may hatch as early as January 17 or as late as January 22.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/When-did-incubation-begin-December-4-or-13th-td5877408.html","images":0},{"id":"2496695","topic":"2496695","order":1,"title":"Tues 9-11, Thur 2-5, Sat 9-11","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-03-18T07:54:00.055000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I'll try to fill in more when schedule gets finished and there are holes.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Tues-9-11-Thur-2-5-Sat-9-11-td2496695.html","images":0},{"id":"2496746","topic":"2496695","order":2,"title":"Re: Tues 9-11, Thur 2-5, Sat 9-11","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-03-18T08:07:18-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thanks, Trisha! A report released recently by Florida Audubon, called Eagle Watch, says eaglets here are doing well based on sheer numbers but that they're losing natural nesting habitat. \"We seem to be on target and the population is stable at this point, but they're having to adapt to people,\" said program director Shawnlei Breeding. \"More and more are nesting in developed areas, and some eagles are nesting quite close to each other.\" Bald eagles are territorial and typically don't nest near other eagles. In Florida they prefer pine trees, most of which are on dry ground. Dry ground is mostly where we build in Florida, so much of their habitat has become our habitat. The Audubon report found that, out of nearly 600 nests studied across the state, that eaglets are leaving the nest at a rate of 94 percent, with each nest producing an average of 1.3 chicks. There are an estimated 1,500 pairs of breeding eagles in Florida. That's No. 2 in the nation, behind only Alaska. Breeding said this year's numbers looked good when compared to bald eagle recovery plans and population counts in recent years. Twenty-six nestlings were monitored in Lee County during the 2016-17 nesting season with 20 nestlings watched in Collier County. All the nestlings in Lee successfully fledged while 13 of the eaglets in Collier did the same. \"That is a good percentage, and that’s based on the data we’re collecting,\" she said. \"That is based on eagles that we watched and there may be some errors in the data because there could be chicks that hatched but didn’t fledge that we didn’t know about.\" It's still too early to tell how Hurricane Irma will impact this breeding season, but the massive storm destroyed an estimated 25 percent of bald eagle nests, according to the report. Another 10 percent of nests were damaged and needed repairs. That was the case with local celebrity eagles Harriet and M15, a mating pair whose lives are streamed to millions around the world through a series of wildlife cameras. Harriet and M15 rebuilt their nest in time for the current nesting season, and Breeding said she expects that other eagles were able to fix theirs as well. \"It did hit at the time that a lot of eagles were coming back, but it hit early enough that the birds that came back and found that their nest was gone were able to rebuild,\" Breeding said. \"But we are seeing a little bit of movement in locations if their tree went down, and some of them are out there kung fu fighting over nesting territory.\" Jim Beever, a planner with the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council, monitored eagles for the state years ago. He read the Audubon report and said although there are gaps in the data (mostly counties in the panhandle) the eagle snapshot is on par with other eagle monitoring programs he's seen. \"I think it’s probably true based on this and coming from other agencies that the eagle population in Florida is stable,\" Beever said. So what makes Florida such a good place for bald eagles? \"For one thing we have so much coast,\" Beever said. \"People need to remember bald eagles are of the sea eagle group and fish are really a big part of their natural diet. They’ll eat other things but they’re definitely honing in on fish, particularly for breeding.\" Beever says he stays 1,500 feet away from a nest when observing in the wild. He mentioned Harriet and M15 as a good pair to watch because they don't seem disturbed by people who watch from a nearby church parking lot, which is several hundred feet from the nest tree. \"The best way for people to observe eagles is to go to one of the places like the eagle nest off Bayshore,\" Beever said. \"That’s a nice place to go see eagles and I’ve been there and people have their big scopes up and they share them, so it’s a good place to go.\" Breeding said the bird's popularity is due to a variety of characteristics. \"They're a symbol of hope for me,\" she said. \"You look at all the environmental damage out there, but here is a bird that was on the brink of extinction and has come back. Other people see how powerful they are, and they’re beautiful.\" CLICK HERE For full story with photos, video and several interesting and informative links http://www.naplesnews.com/story/news/environment/2017/12/20/report-eagle-population-soaring-florida/969323001/","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Report-Eagle-population-soaring-in-Florida-td7574819.html","images":0},{"id":"2463245","topic":"2463245","order":1,"title":"No Parking South of Pines Blvd!","author":"Kelly Smith","date":"2009-03-11T15:15:43.554000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"There are now \"No Parking\" signs installed on the south side of Pines Blvd. Several of the DOT trucks were present when I went by, and they told me that the police will begin ticketing violators now that the signs are installed. I believe that the Biscayne Boulevard eagles of 5 years ago, the Davie eagles, the Palm Avenue eagles, and the ones that I see are all the same pair. This pair behaves differently in a couple of ways. First off, they're very comfortable perching on man-made structure. Metal towers. Not a particularly common bald eagle behavior. Also, they don't seem to be fish eaters, rather they specialize in ducks and ducklings. I spoke to the maintenance man on a nearby golf course and he said that they wiped all the ducks and Egyptian geese off the golf course. So it's not surprising that this pair has moved around and has not had a consistent nest site. Will they return to nest here? This pair of Bald Eagles (Pride and his mates Joy, who disappeared in 2015, and Jewel, who replaced her) have nested successfully in Pembroke Pines since at least 2007 and so far the City has taken important measures to reduce disturbances at the nest and also declared the site as a sanctuary for the species. This breeding season the eagles abandoned their long-term nest and constructed a new one, also on City property about 100 yards to the east, [specific nest-location detail withheld]. It was precariously located in a very tall and limber Australian Pine. They hatched out two eaglets in early March, 2021. These were the 26th and 27th known offspring produced by these birds. On April 11, high winds associated with a thunderstorm damaged the nest. Subsequently, as the nest deteriorated, both of their eaglets fell to the ground before they were old enough to fly, one on April 18 and the second on April 28. Both were rescued with the assistance of Florida FWC and Pembroke Pines Fire and Rescue. Although one suffered a fractured \"collarbone,\" both are now in a rehabilitation facility and doing well. Hopefully, they will both fully recover and be eventually released into the wild. Eagle watchers had been concerned about the Melaleuca trees which increasingly intruded on the old nest. Because of their huge wingspan (nearly 7 feet) the eagles had to dodge obstacles when they flew in and out of the nest under varying wind conditions. Eagles also prefer to nest in a tree which provides sight distance and clear flight corridors to and from the nest. These problems persisted even after the City performed limited pruning of trees on the north side of the nest. Possibly, the encroachment of surrounding trees was a factor in their choosing not to use the old nest. The growth habits of the Australian Pines which dominate the eagle territory do not provide natural platforms for a nest, and there is a concern that the adults may now abandon the territory. This pair occasionally visited the old nest this year, sometime carrying prey there to consume or butcher for the eaglets. Since Bald Eagles may normally use alternate nests in their territory, it is possible that, if the old nest can be made more hospitable, they might select it next breeding season, which begins October 1. Other options, such as construction of a platform on a pole or placing an artificial nest at the site of the new nest which was destroyed, are impractical, intrusive and expensive. There is no guarantee that the eagles will reoccupy the old nest, but a careful project to remove the (mostly) Melaleuca trees which block the overstory in a space with a radius of about 15-20 feet on the ground and up above the level of the nest may make it more habitable. Some of the problem trees were bent and partially felled by Hurricane Irma and their trunks may extend much further from the nest tree. The plan would be to spare nearby mature Australian Pines (they serve as a windbreak against high winds) but perhaps remove a few of their intruding limbs. Trunks could be left where felled except for a clear area on the ground under the nest tree. Execution of the plan would require the approval and support of the City. It is under review by scientists and will not be attempted unless they sanction this action. Florida FWC would be informed, and resources of the City Public Services, arborists, and possibly the Florida Forest Service would be essential. On site, problem trees would be marked for removal in advance of the clearing effort, which then should should be accomplished in one day. Since the activity would take place outside the breeding season and not involve disturbance of the nest itself, a permit from the US Fish & Wildlife Service would not be required.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Proposal-to-clear-area-around-old-nest-td7576214.html","images":0},{"id":"7576216","topic":"7576214","order":2,"title":"Re: Proposal to clear area around old nest","author":"naturegirl","date":"2021-05-14T17:03:24.863000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"I love the idea of a platform or artificial nest which can be filled with branches and moss half way and these would be stable. It's in the food they eat. Eagle protection agencies have been seeing eagles that are oddly sick, explained Plymouth County Naturalist Victoria De Vos. \"They started testing the blood and they are finding out that they had very high levels of lead, a neurotoxin,\" De Vos said. \"It was basically paralyzing them in different ways.\" Bald eagles are getting lead poisoning by eating deer carcasses that have fragments of lead slugs in them. These carcasses are often those of deer wounded by hunters but not retrieved. \"Eagles aren't very delicate eaters,\" said De Vos. \"They don't pick through their food and see what they're eating.\" Lead poisoning is becoming more widespread, or at least more widely recognized, in Iowa's eagles. \"Hunters have been harvesting more deer in Iowa, and most deer in Iowa are shot with a lead slug,\" said Kay Neumann, executive director at Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR), an organization dedicated to eagle and other raptor rehabilitation along with research and education. SOAR is based in Dedham, Iowa. Neumann and others are urging hunters to replace lead ammunition with copper, which doesn't poison wildlife. When a lead slug enters a deer, parts of it shatter and spread out in the animal. Even the tiniest pieces are dangerous for eagles, because they are very susceptible to lead, Neumann said. \"Two hundred milligrams is lethal to them. That's a baby aspirin size piece,\" she said. \"They have such efficient digestive systems, it goes straight to their blood.\" Already this season, Neumann has treated four bald eagles with lead poisoning. \"When they come in, they can't stand up, their stomach lining is ulcerated and they're puking green, some come in blind and they're usually gasping for air. The lead interferes with the oxygen in their blood, so they're starting to suffocate,\" Neumann said. \"It's horrible.\" Lead mimics calcium, so eagles' bodies (and human bodies) readily absorb it and send it into the bones, blood and neurological system. \"The eagles' brains swell, some have seizures,\" Neumann said. Last year in Iowa, 27 of 40 bald eagles treated at Iowa centers showed lead poisoning in their blood. Only a few had actually been shot. \"When it's more than 60 percent, it's not random,\" Neumann said of eagles eating carcasses with lead. Pointing out that not all sick eagles are brought in for care, she estimated up to 176 eagles in Iowa could have been affected by lead poisoning in 2009 alone. \"That's half of our breeding population,\" she said. Eagles aren't the only ones eating lead in their meat. Humans also unknowingly eat venison with lead fragments in it at times. Children are especially susceptible to lead poisoning because their bodies absorb calcium, and therefore lead, very quickly. In children, high levels of lead can do is lower their IQ, cause attention deficit disorder or worse, Neumann said. Lead has also been linked to diseases in adults like kidney failure, she added. There is a treatment available to both eagles and humans: chelation. \"It's injections twice a day for the eagles,\" Neumann said. \"It combines with the lead in the blood in a way that the kidneys can get rid of.\" Chelation is a four-week process of continually cleaning the blood. Even with treatment, the eagles may still die or never fully recover. \"Most of these eagles come in with really high levels,\" Neumann said. \"Most are not making it.\" Neumann, who said her whole family hunts deer, is calling on all hunters to use copper ammunition. \"An eagle can eat an entire copper slug and be OK,\" she said. Copper ammunition, she admitted, is more expensive than lead. Copper solid shotgun slugs might cost $15 for a box of five, where lead slugs are around $9 or $10, she said. Dick Halter, owner of Shirts 'N Shooters in Le Mars, priced the difference for .22 long rifle cartridges and .270 caliber cartridges. For the .22 cartridges, lead core bullets were $2.99 for a 50 pack and the lead-free variety were $6.99 for a 50 pack. For the .270 caliber cartridges, the price is about the same. \"That surprised me,\" Halter said. He noted that states are pushing more and more for non-lead ammunition. In Iowa, lead shot is illegal to use while hunting waterfowl. The idea is to prevent animals from eating the shot off the bottom of wetlands or from eating animals injured by the lead shot. California has strict regulations about lead bullets, he said. Neumann said the change isn't happening fast enough. She expects to see more lead-poisoned eagles in February with numbers peaking in March. \"Northwest Iowa is a travel pathway for eagles,\" she said. \"As they cut cross country away from the reservoirs heading north, they scavenge more.\" De Vos said the lead poisoning seen in eagles \"is a shame.\" \"To have bald eagles just off the endangered species list, and now this,\" De Vos said. \"It's not good.\" Information from: Daily Sentinel, http://www.lemarssentinel.com","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagles-Getting-Sick-On-Food-They-Eat-td4533837.html","images":0},{"id":"4667881","topic":"4533837","order":2,"title":"Re: Eagles Getting Sick On Food They Eat","author":"Trisha","date":"2010-03-03T09:43:14.743000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Very interesting and alarming article that certainly could impact our eagles. We selected the timing for the poll because we thought there would be much greater interest when they were sitting on eggs or had returned as a happily bonded couple. Here is what we agreed to do when we discussed this back in December: New female Glory briefly joined Pride JAN 11-9:45 AM Both Eagles on the nest Members of this FORUM are almost all local people who have been observing this nest for up to seven years. Many worked to secure designation of this site as a Bald Eagle Sanctuary. When Middle School students wanted to name the eaglets we helped them set up an independent poll during two separate seasons, and they obtained hundreds of votes from all over the US and even other countries. This poll was open to all. It limited voting to only once per Internet IP address to reduce duplicate submissions. It did not require someone to register with a Web site or this FORUM. The results were published for all to see. It was an exciting and educational experience. I expected that our agreement would be carried out and now it looks as if I misled our readers who suggested names after I told them to wait for the poll. What were the statistics on the vote? I noticed you announced it on Facebook on Friday, February 13 at THIS FACEBOOK LINK and the next day there were only 10 comments / suggestions, some of which duplicated names we had already used. None of them were \"Jewel.\" Maybe I missed something. Anyway, you announced the \"new\" name only 3 days later. I am appealing to your sense of fairness. Would you be willing to have a re-run of the poll so that everyone (in the world) gets a chance to suggest names and then vote on which they think is best? We could ask for additional nominations over a week and then choose. Most of the families that have children in the WB Performance Ensemble do discuss events with the bald eagles. However, I drive every day North on 27, to 75 and head east to Plantation. Everyday on the drive home, driving South on 27 - just North of Griffin on the West side of 27, there is a young bald eagle, sometimes alone, sometimes with a few of the vultures. The times are between 5:15 P.M. and 5:45 P.M., and they perch on the dead melalucous trees. This is very possibly one of the Pembroke Pines eaglets, but there would be no way to prove its identity. Someone with a spotting scope might check to see whether it has a leg band or is carrying a transmitter pack-- if so, it would definitely NOT be a local bird, as none of them have been marked. It is quite common for first year eagles to associate with vultures, as they are still developing hunting skills, and may depend upon a diet that includes more carrion, especially roadkills. Eagles are said to have a poor sense of smell, while vultures can smell carrion from miles away, hence the advantage of following the vultures to a meal. This trait places them at special risk of being killed by motor vehicles.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/bald-eagles-td5247829.html","images":0},{"id":"5267730","topic":"5247829","order":3,"title":"Re: bald eagles","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2010-07-07T18:57:59.497000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Thanks for the info. New here after reading the article in the Herald about the nest and have gone by a couple of times this week. Today, I went for 5 minutes and took some quick photos from my car. I couldn't really see what was going on until after I left, but the eagle was perched just above the nest, flew down on the nest, picked something up and set it on the edge and stood by looking protective. I had read that the little ones could soon be out on the branches in the next few weeks, so I got excited thinking what was in my photos was a baby. After posting some pics on Instagram all excited, I may have embarrassed myself after googling and seeing that the eaglets would have some white fuzz - maybe what I saw was a piece of prey. When I look at the last 2 photos, it seems there was movement in a head of the \"little thing\" and what looks like a beak. Ken asked me to post these here to see if anyone had any opinions. A newly hatched eaglet would not yet show much white fuzz, but it is born with it and when it dries it does cover its body and it takes a couple of days to fill out, Here is a link to a photo of a new hatchling from imageshack: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/100/610xy.jpg The object could well be a portion of a prey item such as a bird or fish, but its shape is certainly suggestive of a small creature. Eagles do not catch items that small to my knowledge, but it could be part of a bird or fish. The third photo shows the male grasping or eating what could be a narrow bone or piece of flesh. That gives me hope that it is not an eaglet. In the next two photos it is positioned in an way that would be very unusual for a newly hatched eaglet. A hatchling would not stand up straight like that. The color appears to be that of fresh blood. It also may simply be the bloodied part of a larger prey item as it seems to be positioned within the nest cup, poking up behind the rim rather than sitting up on the rim. I wanted to give them names but it seems like all of the patriotic names and husband & wife names have been taken and didn't really want to copy others, so what do you think of Alice for the Female, and Hatter for the Male? I know it's a little weird but so is the movie or every version of the movie. Please feel free to come up with other names, I just can't think of many combinations to suit them. Please some input is needed. Thanks, and looking forward to a new nesting season this year, they have already started to build up their nest putting some big sticks up there. This was taken a few days ago, the Female in the nest.
