Pride may be identified by his rather compact and tapered body and relatively shallow gape. It does not extend much behind the eye, while that of the female reaches halfway or more under her eye. Lately he has also shown some wear or minor damage to the flight feathers at the tip of his left wing, visible in this photo. I could not see the black mark on his outer feather which is another of his unique characteristics. He was heading towards the large lake in Sunset Lakes subdivision. Eagles have occasionally been seen roosting on Lighthouse Island in that lake. FYI, This handsome male Cape May Warbler was one of the species I was watching. A \"factoid\" of interest is that \"The Cape May Warbler breeds in boreal coniferous forests, where it sings, feeds, and nests high in the spruce canopy...Although the first illustrations of this species were based on birds taken in Canada, its English name refers to the locality from which Alexander Wilson first described the species—Cape May, New Jersey—where it was not recorded again for more than 100 years... Osprey (and eagle) wing bones are long and strong, but light and hollow-- no match for an impact with a steel girder or power line. http://www.facebook.com/notes.php?id=116178745212 Suncoast Animal League: Osprey Rescue Palm Harbor, FL Osprey Rescue Yesterday at 8:14pm The call came in about 7:15pm , Monday, March 29th, that an Osprey was hanging from a cell tower near Us [specific street address withheld]. The cell tower was in a locked compound owned by Brighthouse Networks. We headed to the location but it was after hours and no one was around. As you looked up at the tower it seemed to go on for ever and then, some 90-100 feet up and barely visible, was an Osprey hanging by it's left wing. The Osprey's mate circled just above her, doing his best to keep her company and he didn't understand why he couldn't coax her to follow him. After a few phone calls, Brighthouse employees, Dan Tatem and Glen Fasting arrived and then a ladder truck from the Palm Harbor Fire Department. Next, Captain Tim Pilsner, who was off duty and his wife, veterinarian Gayle Burrell showed up on scene to assist. Before long, I was fitted for a harnessed and started the daunting ascend to the stranded Osprey. Right behind me was Captain Pilsner. It was a slow, step by step process, and on three occasions it was necessary to climb to the back of the ladder to avoid metal bars that were placed along the ladder and then crawl back to the front to continue on. As, we climbed higher the winds became much stronger making the process even slower and more difficult. Finally, I reached the struggling bird. To my surprise, she wasn't caught by fishing line or other debris but her wing had become caught in a slot in a piece of the angle iron. I knew immediately that this was a very bad scenario. It took both hands to free her, one to hold her and the other to slide the wing out of the crevice. Soon, she was free of the tower. I handed her to Captain Pilsner and we began the long downward descend. All along, her mate watched from above. Captain Pilsner made it to the ground long before I did and Dr Burrell's immediate assessment of the Osprey was not encouraging. After a while, I finally made it back to earth and we took the injured bird to AA Animal Emergency Clinic. Dr. Stanton's assessment was the same, the best thing for the Osprey was euthanasia. We said our good-by's. Although the ending wasn't what we hoped, at least she is didn't hang there and suffer. And her mate didn't have to stand by helplessly and witness her struggle. On the bright side, look how many people rushed to her aid. Suncoast had four people there, Brighthouse had two, there were three firefighters, a paramedic and a veterinarian. And then, there was AA Animal Emergency Clinic. Thanks to all who helped. This kind of work sure has its ups and downs. It is quite difficult to get a good view of the nest. So far this week I have only seen the eaglets, unattended, although Pride has appeared over west Miramar several times around sunrise, very likely heading to forage in the large lake in Sunset Lakes. Phil reports that the larger female eaglet (P Piney 24) was roosting on a branch in the nest. True \"branching\" out on the limbs should soon begin. This usually is followed by the first free flight within a week or so. His observations follow, latest first: May 9 2020 I stopped by the nest at noon today both Eaglets were active on the nest, flapping their wings. As soon as I set up to take photos, they stopped and the male went to nap on the west side of the nest. The female remained standing on a branch on the east side of the nest. Phil May 7, 2020 I was at the nest this morning at 11:00. Pride was perching over the nest. It was difficult to determine, but, his wing did not appear to be drooping today. When he did shake his wings, I can see where he is missing feathers. He was watching over the Eaglets as they slept. Phil May 6 2020: I was reviewing my photos from last evening. That was Pride on the high perch. Notice his left wing, his problem is more than just missing feathers. I suspect he was in a fight. I think we want to keep our eye out for him. He was also “hacking” but didn’t appear to be trying to regurgitate a pellet. I was at the nest this morning at 7:55, the Eaglets were sleeping. The male popped his head up for a second. Phil May 5 2020 I stopped by the nest tonight at approximately 6 pm. The adult female was on the high perch above the nest and the female Eaglet was in the east corner of the nest. The other Eaglet was flopping around as if sleeping. Two bald eagles are building a nest. About three months ago, the pair of eagles, at least [specific street address withheld], were spotted ferrying sticks to the top of the lofty tower. If completed, the nest would become just the fourth one in Miami-Dade County confirmed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission since 1987, although not all nests are documented by the state. “It’s amazing they’re picking a spot that’s this urban,” said Donna Molfetto, an aviation biologist with the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, who has visited the nest four times after it was posted on an online message board. Considered one of the great comeback stories of conservation, bald eagles are now plentiful across the nation. Even northern parts of Florida have a healthy population, made possible by the 1960s grassroots effort that followed the publication of Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring.” The book uncovered the lethal effects of pesticides on birds — the number of eagle nests nationwide had shrunk to just 500 — and paved the way for the modern environmental movement. But South Florida eagles never recovered. And why remains a mystery that has puzzled ornithologists for decades. “It’s a really odd anomaly,” said Audubon Florida Everglades research manager Peter Frezza. With miles and miles of undisturbed wetlands, tree islands and mangrove coasts in neighboring Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys, South Florida could certainly be prime grounds for the birds, he said. “There’s a million acres of pristine habitat,” Frezza said. But something could be happening in the ecosystem that eagles don’t like. Birds tend to be widely studied because they are an important indicator of an ecosystem’s health. And eagles — dubbed “sentinels” by scientists — are among the most studied because they live about 25 years, a long time in bird years, and provide lots of valuable information. Until recently, Everglades National Park had one of the longer running data sets on eagles dating back to 1958, which peaked at about 50 nesting pairs. But about three years ago surveys stopped, said biological branch chief Tylan Dean, after new rules kicked in on using park planes. The number of pairs had dropped to the 20s at last count, he said. “We have a lot of theories [on the decline] but we don’t know at the end of the day,” Dean said. “Over time we always hoped that Everglades restoration would improve conditions and fish [supplies], but we’re still waiting for those restoration benefits.” South Florida’s sprawling population could explain part of the decline in eagles, Frezza said. “But that doesn't explain what’s going on in Everglades National Park,” he said. One prevailing theory is that eagles left as fish they feed on disappeared, he said. Eagles usually split their diet between fish and small mammals. They’re also opportunistic feeders — landfills provide some of the best eagle-watching venues. But South Florida eagles mostly eat fish. The decline in eagles also mirrored a similar decline in other wading birds that depend on fish, according to a 2013 study. While no longer on the endangered species list, eagles are still federally protected, making it illegal to harm or even possess any part of an eagle, dead or alive. “Even if they drop a feather at the museum, I’m not allowed to take it home,” Molfetto said. People also remain protective. Richard Kresge, an assistant groomer at Le Pet Salon near the base of the cell phone tower, spotted one of the eagles about three months ago while on a cigarette break but said he kept it to himself. “I didn’t tell anyone because I thought somebody would do something stupid,” he said. Molfetto, who will soon be working nearby at the museum’s Batchelor Environmental Center on Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay campus, which breaks ground next month, said the nest could eventually weigh a ton and measure 13 feet in diameter. The tower sits on property owned by former North Miami Beach councilman John Kurzman, who could not be reached for comment. “Whoever owns this tower,” Molfetto said, “is going to have a massive structure on their hands.” MORE: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/article13610795.html","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagles-nest-on-Miami-cellphone-tower-td7574064.html","images":0},{"id":"7574065","topic":"7574064","order":2,"title":"Re: Eagles nest on Miami cellphone tower","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-03-12T06:29:10.867000-04:00","nest":"North Miami / Miami-Dade historical records","season":"","text":"Some images of the cell tower eagles by Smith Juan, used with permission. Quite a success story. Where are all those new eagles going to find homes? Volunteers and Friends: Some of you are aware that we've had a banner year for Bald Eagles in Pinellas. Overall it has been an strong and early nesting season. In November two rescues took place. One near PI27 and the other at PI18. Both PI27 and PI18 were rehabbed and released. The rescue of PI18 was exceptional, the female eagle was banded. She had been previously rescued in 1996 in the same area. She had been shot and lived at the Audubon Bird of Prey Center for 2 years, until February of 1998. She was released NW of Brooksville. This time she was in a territory fight and was released NW of Brooksville again, to detain her or sidetrack her from returning to her nest, which is now occupied by another female eagle and newly hatched young. She was an adult back then and clinic staff felt she was in her 20's. We've monitored 25 productive nests and 34 locations. PI30, 37 and 40 all incubated and hatched 3 and are raising 3 eaglets. It's pretty common for us to get 1, maybe 2 nests a year with 3 young, but 3 nests with 3 young is pretty extraordinary. PI14, 20 and 31 are all fostering eaglets, so each of those will be raising 3 eaglets as well. As of this evening, all parents are at the foster nests tending young. The total number of hatched eaglets from the 25 nests is 38, not counting the 3 which were added by tree climber extraordinaire, Jim Lott and fearless heroine, Lynda White. Without including the extra three the young to nest ratio is 1.52 with a couple of nests still not quite big enough to count. Adding in the 3 young we have 41 eaglets total in Pinellas County. The highest count I have from the historical North Pinellas notes is 27 eaglets in 06/07. Our group also monitors portions of Hillsborough and Pasco. District 1 in Hillsborough has 3 nests, one is on land which is for sale with a Hillsborough BOCC meeting coming up, one is in a cell tower and the other is at MacDill AFB. One eaglet pre fledged from the MacDill nest today and was taken to the vet for further wing examination. Pasco nest PS14 is being continually monitored as the tree is leaning quite a bit and there are still flightless young in the nest. The hope is that the property owner, Progress Energy, will be able to come up with some solutions to help retain the nest on the property. Thank you very much to all of you who are able to help. I really appreciate it. Hope you can take a moment to see and enjoy Kathy's photo show below. It is fabulous. Pride's head was barely visible the entire time. There appear to be a few more loose branches hanging down from the left side of the nest, but I am not sure this is significant. We did have very heavy wind gusts the past two days. Wind was from the northwest: There had been a heavy storm and a cold front has temps into the low to mid 40's. The female was puffed up against the cold. We expect the first egg to hatch within the coming week. Jewel's photo shows some distinguishing features: large bill with deep gape which extends well past the middle of her eye, bulky \"rectangular\" shaped body as opposed to the tapered look of the male, and long hind claws (halluxes) which wrap around the branch almost as far as the front middle toe. Other features which are not related to gender are a rather persistent mark on the end of her bill on the bend, and a big shock of white feathers on the back of her neck which may relate to her larger size with the longer neck retracted. She also has evidence of a brood spot on her breast, although males develop a smaller one.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-5-Male-incubating-female-roosting-nearby-td7574829.html","images":5},{"id":"7574544","topic":"7574544","order":1,"title":"Eaglet in nest 6/30/2016","author":"Maria Rosa Drake","date":"2016-06-30T08:22:00.639000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"I saw the eaglet in the nest this morning around 7am.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eaglet-in-nest-6-30-2016-td7574544.html","images":0},{"id":"7574545","topic":"7574544","order":2,"title":"Re: Eaglet in nest 6/30/2016","author":"tczig","date":"2016-07-02T19:12:55.699000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"That's very good news! [SCOTT KEELER | Times] ST. PETERSBURG — The brother and sister were as different as night and day. The boy, a feisty eaglet of 6 weeks, was prone to biting and hissing. The girl, a few days younger but bigger, was more apt to bury her head and hide. Ten days ago, the young bald eagles were snatched from their Palm Beach County nest by the Florida Audubon Society. But it was for the best, said Lynda White, the society's EagleWatch coordinator. Their sagging tree on a Lake Okeechobee dike was in the path of an Army Corps of Engineers construction project. But two families of eagles in St. Petersburg, with characteristics seemingly tailored to their unexpected kin, took them in Monday. • • • Professional tree climber Jim Lott, an Audubon Society volunteer, places a baby eagle in a nest containing two other eaglets Monday. The pair of adult eagles from the nest didn’t make it easy for Lott to make his way up the tree. White called the bird \"sweetheart\" when she was lifted from a minivan at a St. Petersburg cemetery. The siblings were being split up to avoid overburdening their adoptive parents. It would likely be the last time they would see each other. The eaglet's eyes were wide, reflecting the crush of television cameras. Her would-be parents slowly circled far overhead, barely visible squiggles in the clear sky. The nest that would be her new home is one of the oldest in the county, with the same bald eagle pair returning there every year for at least the past 20. The eaglet let out a short warble, and its world went dark. It was put into a duffle bag without a struggle. Cemetery groundskeepers lounged nearby on a truck, watching the commotion of bird watchers with telephoto lenses documenting the scene. \"They leave when it gets hot, come back when its cold up north,\" said Lewis Gibbs, one of the workmen, of the nesting pair. \"Like old folks, from Canada.\" The female was put into the nest by Jim Lott, a professional tree climber and Audubon volunteer. The eaglet's new sibling acted as if it was nothing new. The eaglet's introduction to its new home began with a whisper; her brother's would soon start with a screech. ••• Patricia Terrell planted a 7-foot-tall eucalyptus tree in her back yard nearly 40 years ago. Now 100 feet, it towers above her south St. Petersburg neighborhood. Three years ago, a pair of bald eagles chose to build their nest there. And now, Terrell, mother of four, grandmother of 13, was about to welcome what she jokingly called \"a 14th grandchild\" Monday afternoon. The male eaglet was stirring in a covered cage on her back porch. For Lott, the tree climber, the eucalyptus was gorgeous. \"My tree climbing buddies would love this one,\" he said. The eagles there thought so too — and they would fight to keep him out. As Lott was halfway up, the nesting pair began to swoop and dive, shrieking, turning tight, menacing circles around him. And then they landed, one in front of him, one behind, just feet from Lott as he was under their nest. The pair took off again and circled as Lott continued upward. \"I've never seen eagles do that before,\" said White, the eagle expert. This pair was as aggressive as the new chick they would soon welcome. The bird bit White's cheek as she moved it from the cage to a bag to hoist up the tree. \"This one's a pistol — be careful, Jim,\" she shouted to the man in the tree. But once the young eagle was in the nest, the parents circled and then stared at it from a nearby tree, keeping watch as fiercely as they did when the nest contained only their two original chicks. Dominick Tao can be reached at [phone withheld] or [email withheld]. = = = = = = = = = = = = fast facts Eagle update Last month, the Audubon Society placed an orphaned eagle named Hoover into a Dunedin nest with two other chicks. Hoover, then a fuzzy chick, is now a healthy, brown-feathered young eagle, as are his adoptive siblings. Please add your voice by sending an email to the Commissioners and attending the meeting, if possible. From Angelo Castillo, Commissioner City of Pembroke Pines, to Mayor and other Commissioners Good Friends: At the Pembroke Pines City Commission meeting of April 6th, 2022 at 6:30 pm I am sponsoring an item to environmentally preserve 24 acres of city owned land[specific nest-location detail withheld]. This property, most of which is currently zoned for residential construction, is where for years bald eagles have come to nest. I agree with area residents that the parcel should not be built upon but rather preserved in natural state and, because we as city taxpayers already own this land, there are no conflicting private property rights to contend with. We the people are already the owners of these lands and are therefore free to do with our own land as we wish. Under the proposal I will present, the land could be partly used for educational purposes so children and others could learn more about nature but only so long as the wildlife that depend upon that parcel, the eagles especially, are not disturbed. But it would be preserved in a natural state. I will be asking that staff evaluate the concept and present the City Commission with their best recommendations for re-designating and preserving these lands as an environmentally protected area. If you agree with this plan please attend the City Commission meeting of April 6th at 6:30 pm to make your views known. Alternatively you may email your Mayor and City Commissioners to express you views. Their emails are as follows: [email withheld] [email withheld] [email withheld] [email withheld] [email withheld] I hope you can join together with me and our neighbors on April 6th at 6:30 pm to ensure these public lands are preserved in their natural state in perpetuity. With the cold snap I expect the birds would be keeping the eggs well-covered, so it will be useful to confirm your observation during the next few days. I would have bet a bunch that Sat. morning the female was on an egg on the nest. Every behavior was there like when she stood up peering down into the nest and that one time it looked like she may have pushed something and then she went down on the nest in the spot she was pushing towards. After over 3 hrs on the nest she just took a short flight to the tree and back and then went right back to the nest, looked down in 1 spot and then went down there so we couldn't even see her head when we left. Kino and Tom never left the front of the nest (I walked around looking for the other adult.) They found a spot right in front of the nest with a great view and once they got the one shot of her head below the nest rim they watched closely. One thing I thought of after reading your post is that this year the cold weather arrived so much sooner so maybe they are staying down really low if the egg is there. This is a real puzzle......we could have been mistaken on Sat. I guess, and if an adult wasn't on the nest for 6 hrs in this cold....it does seem to say that the egg isn't there yet!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Monday-12-6-td5810141.html","images":0},{"id":"7572989","topic":"7572989","order":1,"title":"03-26-2013; 12:30pm and 3:45pm - No sign of Eaglet","author":"tczig","date":"2013-03-26T17:15:23.293000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"I visited the nest twice today. The parent eagle was over to the right on those tall, bare trees she always sits on. I also went back at 3:45pm. One parent was in the nest, and the other parent on the bare trees. The parent on the nest just was sitting there looking around. Still, no sign of the eaglet. Now, here's the thing. I took photos, and you can clearly see NO eaglet in the nest. And, later on, you can see the parent in the nest with NO eaglet. But, I am a DUMMY (admittedly) -- my camera was set on \"Tv\" (I don't even know what that is, but it's clearly a mistake). Among them is \"Citrus,\" an eagle that returned to the Florida Gulf Coast last winter, wandered up north into Maine this August, and will probably start back south any day now. Eagles that nest at the southern tip of Florida generally do not migrate very far to the north, and in fact, many may just wander locally during the non-breeding season. \"Our\" Pembroke Pines eagles are located in between, so until we are able to track one of them, it will not be possible to know where they spend their summers. To track \"Citrus,\" just click on this link and select the \"Animated Map\" option . Barbara writes: I have been watching some of the tracking data for bald eagles. They were 'tagged' at Chesapeake Bay. About half of our population spends their winters there. There hasn't been an update on the eagle named Zephyrhills in awhile. It was cool, about 68 degrees with a steady breeze from the north. There were FWC signs on the fence along the south side of the road. Some looked new. The FDOT \"No Parking\" sign to the west had still not been replaced and was on the ground near the SE corner of 209th Avenue. The male (Pride) was not evident in or around the nest in the usual roosting spots. The female (Joy) was sitting deep in the nest facing right when I arrived at about 9:45 AM. Around 10:00 AM Joy changed position with her head to the left. All was quiet until about 10:30 when I heard the screams of an adult eagle seeming to come from behind and to the right (west) of the nest. I checked the surrounding trees and then walked down to the melaleuca snags to the west, where I found Pride roosting. Pride roosted there until 10:42 when he flew to the nest, appearing from behind, into the wind (Pride is on the right side of this photo). The pair called to each other briefly, and Joy flew to the east and roosted in the large pine along the road for about a minute. She then flew down to the melaleucas and roosted there. Pride settled very deeply into the nest, out of sight most of the time. Just as I was driving away at about 11:00 AM Joy flew off low to the south.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-16-10-30-AM-Day-9-Another-exchange-of-incubation-duties-td7573280.html","images":11}]
