Our local pair of eagles is no exception, and they favor three or four tall Australian Pines along Pines Boulevard, as well as the trunks of melaleuca trees in the SW Florida Water Management District land just to the west of the proposed City of Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle sanctuary. These exotic trees were all killed by herbicides a few years ago. The are badly decayed and many fall down with each windstorm. As these roosting sites disappear, we can expect the eagles to seek out other prominent perches, such as power poles. Electrocution and collision with power lines are major causes of urban Bald Eagle mortality. On June 11, Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee members Barry Heimlich of South Florida Audubon, and veteran eagle watcher Trisha Norton met at the site of the Pembroke Pines nest with Doug Macke, Florida Power & Light Company Broward Area Power Systems Environmental Coordinator, to discuss this hazard. They were pleased to learn that Doug had been observing the eagles since last year, when the nest was first \"discovered,\" and the company had already taken some action. The FPL transmission lines run along the south side of Pines Boulevard, about 150 feet in front of the nest tree. The nest site is opposite the white truck parked on roadside, and one of the eagles' favorite roosting trees rises prominently above the wires... It appeared to be a white bird. The older chick fed for a prolonged period, or appeared to just stand on the prey, guarding it, as the smaller sibling just looked on. We captured one apparently hostile interaction on video (screen shot below). Around 10:00 AM the male flew off to the south, and the female flew to roost in the Australian Pine just east of the nest. I hope you have all had a great summer. We are just over two weeks away from the official start of eagle nesting season in Florida, and many eagle pairs have already returned to their nests. My own pair, who nest on a lovely high-tension transmission tower, showed up at the end of last week and have begun repairing the nest, which took a beating in the summer storms. EagleWatch will be conducting training events this fall. A list of these events is can be found at the end of this email. This schedule is still evolving and dates and locations will be added – I will send updates when new events are added. Please call or email me to RSVP or if you have any questions. After much work to correct the problems we encountered last year, we will be using the online data entry portal starting this season. Please stay tuned for a detailed email about that before October 1st. September 19, 2015 - Jacksonville: University of North Florida J.M. Golden Pavilion from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. Phil M and three other photographers were there. They had been observing the nest for over an hour and none had seen any eagles. While the female will sit very low in the nest after depositing her first egg, she will periodically get up to change position and also to turn the egg, showing at least her head and upper body. We did not observe this behavior, and neither did the other nest watchers, so it seems safe to say that the first egg has not yet been laid. The lake next to ours in the Sunset Lakes subdivision appears to have turned over because of the cooler nights. (The lake develops a layer of cooler water on top. Since this water is more dense, it will either get so cool that it breaks through the warmer water underneath, or the wind disrupts the orderly layer and it suddenly sinks to the bottom and mixes the boundary between the deep cooler water and the rest of the lake. Suddenly the cooler water is no longer locked in the depths of the lake and it rises and mixes, bringing up life forms such as vegetation and fish, including the larger fish that prefer to stay deep during the hot summer.) This lake (between Monaco Cove and Monaco subdivisions on Miramar Parkway attracted at least 6 Ospreys and hordes of Ring-billed Gulls this morning (Saturday NOV 30). I am quite sure I saw and heard one Bald Eagle around 7:00 AM but could not tell whether it was in adult plumage. We were taking our morning walk and had a poor view of the lake behind the row of homes. Am hoping our lake, which is a bit larger will also turn over-- it has done this twice before in the past nine years, around Thanksgiving. It attracted Bald Eagles as well as many other fish-eating birds such as herons and egrets. At other times the process has been more gradual and less dramatic, but if the cool weather returns we can expect better fishing for the Ospreys and eagles during the next few weeks in most area lakes. If a pole or tower were placed near the nest, it could double as a roosting spot, and a fall-back platform for an artificial nest in case the nest tree is ever destroyed. A \"telephone pole\" would require heavy machinery to auger a very deep hole. An alternative could be a tower that is tethered by three or more guy wires. Such a pole would rest on a concrete pad. The guy wires would need to be anchored in concrete footings, but hand-digging might be feasible, and the concrete could be pumped into the site via a large hose. These towers, once anchored at the base, can be pulled up using manual labor. The downside of a tethered tower is that the cables themselves could create a collision hazard to the eagles or other larger birds. Grant Campbell of the Bald Eagle Steering Committee provided links to some sites that offer antenna towers for us to check out before the next meeting. Grant says, \"With these modular towers, you can achieve any desired height by varying the connection points for the guy wires. This is Shawnlei's full message: Hello! It has been a challenging week, hasn’t it? I know many of you across the state are still without power, water and/or phones and internet access. My office at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is still without power, phones and internet. I am fortunate to have power at home but no internet, so I am sending this from a local sandwich shop. J Thankfully, I am able to view my emails on my mobile phone, so that is the best way to reach me over the next few days. We hope to have all services restored back at the Center by early next week. Because of Irma, FWC sent out a notice today that they have elected to reschedule tomorrow’s Bald Eagle Species Action Plan (SAP) webinar. They have not announced the replacement date yet, but I will let you all know as soon as I do. You may also sign up to receive email updates on the process directly from FWC by emailing [email withheld]. I encourage you to do so if you are interested in providing feedback on the draft SAP as this is the most efficient way to receive a copy of the draft and access the time-sensitive information and details on how to submit comments on the draft. In preparation to provide feedback on the draft SAP, I have been talking with Julie Wraithmell, the Deputy Executive Director of Audubon Florida. She is especially interested to know how many nests were impacted by Hurricane Irma. When you are able and it is safe to visit your nest, we could use your help collecting information on how your eagle nests fared in the storm. To make it as easy as possible to collect the information, Julie’s office created a handy online form that you can complete from your smart phone, tablet or laptop: fl.audubon.org/nestdata. With FWC revising the Bald Eagle Management Plan, we think it’s important that there is a clear understanding of how this storm has affected nest availability for the coming season. I know several of you have emailed me directly, or posted on Facebook or in the database about the status of your nests. I apologize for duplicating effort, but completing this form will allow Julie’s office to quickly gather the data she wishes to present to FWC. If you have any trouble accessing the form, you may send me your compiled notes on your nests and I will enter them for you. Thanks so much for your help with this. Many of your pairs are back and working on their nests or rebuilding after Irma. While it has been hard to hear the reports of nests gone and trees down, I’m just so glad that Irma came early, before eggs were laid. For pairs that lost their nest tree, they will likely rebuild in the area. Your observations and help finding these relocations will be invaluable. Thank you again for all you do for the eagles! I have seen owl pellets with almost intact skeletons of mice. Bald Eagles have very strong stomach acid and generally digest most of the bones they eat. Like most birds, eagles' gizzards have strong muscles which compress and grind up the food. There will still be some parts of their prey which will not be digested, so they too expel pellets. I once saw one of the Pembroke Pines eagles regurgitate a large amount of sticky white stuff in a long string. I wondered if it had eaten something bad and its stomach rejected it. Indeed, throwing up fluids may sometimes be a sign of illness or happen after a serious injury. Eagles with lead poisoning may vomit. In this case, the eagle seemed go on about as usual after the event. Philip Martin and another observer at the nest earlier yesterday (JAN 3) reported this observation, in Phil's words: I do have a little concern. As we discussed, we both saw the female throwing up. On Monday, I saw her throw up what appeared to look like poop. That she threw up this red gel type stuff (I have a photo of you would like). I sent the photo to a wildlife vet friend of mine and she couldn’t identify it. She speculated that it may be undigested fish or frog guts. Photos are property of Philip Martin and are published with his permission. Although some may consider this \"gross,\" they illustrate an interesting aspect of eagle behavior as well as the importance of keeping eyes on the eagles and caring about their welfare. Like Phil, I hope this is not a sign of illness or injury. Perhaps it is some harmless foreign substance which was indigestible: Later in the day, Phil wrote: Hi Ken, I spent several hours this morning out at the nest, observing the female. Got some good photos. Where can i send them? Stephanie, Here is a link which explains how to post photos to this FORUM if you wish: How to post photos to FORUM http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/How-to-post-photos-to-FORUM-tp7574745.html You must be a \"Member\" of this FORUM to allow you to reply or post new topics and upload your photos. You must first register and subscribe (if desired) and then request membership in the pop-up which should appear if you attempt to post. If you have problems, please contact: NewMexiKen The procedure for posting photos provides two alternatives-- either post a photo from your computer or device or, if your photo is published on the Internet, you may post the address (URL) of your photo. In the latter case, be sure that the photo is JPG format. The address must end in \".jpg\" or it will not display. Be sure to \"resize\" the image, as the original may be larger than the size of the screen. Let the image \"float,\" which lets you decide where you might wish to place it if you are including text or captions. Post in the appropriate sub-forum. The menu for posting photos is fairly straightforward: First, select the appropriate sub-FORUM in which to post your photo (e.g., a specific nest, a sighting away from a known nest, or others as listed) . New Topic --> Insert Image --> choose either to upload from your computer or copy the image's address from the internet If you do choose the latter option, the display photo on many sites such as Facebook or Flicker etc may not be in JPG format, so you may need to click on it to view it in a separate window which may be JPG or provide options such as format or size. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" If you watermark your photos, please try to place the mark so that it does not detract from the subject of your photo. http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/How-to-post-photos-to-FORUM-td7574745.html = = = = = = = = <quote author='Stephanie5056'> I was at the nest today. The adult on the nest consistently began sitting higher and often looked down, as if tending the chick. A couple of times the other mate came to the nest and both peered in together, like \"proud parents.\" The mate may bring food in for while the other is brooding. Brooding, or hovering close over the chicks, must continue for a week or two, until the eaglets are capable of regulating their own body temperature. Within a day or so we saw the adult feeding tiny bits of food. It seems that some prey was also possibly being \"butchered\" at a site away from the nest. One of the city emergency or police employees who often has to drive down to the south on 208th Avenue told me there was a tree out there were he saw an eagle tearing at prey.Of course, they also may bring in whole prey items to the nest and the parent removes small portions when the chicks are very young. Since it is likely that there is a second or even a third egg yet to hatch, the parent must still sit rather close, but there should be a noticeable change. Let's keep careful watch.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Al-Jan-22-td4442223.html","images":0},{"id":"4445677","topic":"4442223","order":4,"title":"Re: Al Jan. 22","author":"Kelly Smith","date":"2010-01-23T10:35:04.944000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"I drove to the nest after school yesterday, to find Umberto already there and taking pictures. It was warm, but extremely windy. One eagle was on the nest with about half a head's height visible above the rim of the nest. After a few minutes the mate flew in and a quick exchange took place. Thanks to Humberto's camera, we were able to determine that the eagle who had left was the female, and the eagle that had arrived was the male. There was not really any \"looking down into the nest\" and the exchange took only moments. The female flew to the melaleucas but only remained there momentarily, before flying away. She returned to the nest about 12 minutes later carrying something long and thin. Yes, we were pretty excited, remembering that the first prey item following the hatching last year was a snake, but alas, it turned out to be just a stick (it is very handy to have those cameras available!). Both eagles remained on the nest for about 4 minutes. There was some looking down, but not what I would call a tell-tale sign. The female settled down on the nest - quite low. As a matter of fact, both eagles had remained what I considered low on the nest, often only leaving a wing or tail feather visible as evidence that the nest was occupied. Until reading the blog this morning, I was convinced that the egg had not hatched. We are now alert for any changes in behavior that may signal egg laying. The pair seemed to have stopped bringing in nest materials about a week ago, and have been seen mating. If the female suddenly begins sitting low in the nest, and one or the other adult is always seen on the nest, this will be a sure sign that the eggs have been deposited. Storks have been flying over the eagles' nest, but not making any deliveries! So far there has been no indication that the eagles have laid their eggs: The female was roosting in the dead melaleucas from about 8 AM until 9:45, when she flew to the nest: She remained on the nest, sitting quietly and sometimes peering down-- had she laid an egg? Maybe not! After 45 minutes (according to Al, who stayed on to watch her) she perched up on the rim of the nest and appeared to be eating something. Then she flew to the east and roosted. Probably a false alarm! Here is a photo of the two bottom lines that run along the poles in front of the nest. I decided to walk back down to the dead trees and look harder way back for anyone. Of course, as I was halfway between the nest and the graveyard, I heard a ruckus and started running back towards the nest. A parent had just been in the nest, apparently made a drop, and both chicks has flown in for breakfast! The parent wasted no time there, just took off to the graveyard and sat way up front like in the old days. I wasn't sure who was eating, or what was being eaten. It appeared to me that it may have been Justice eating, Hope standing off to the east side of the nest. (now that's a change, isn't it?) Whomever it was that was chowing down left shortly thereafter, and landed in the pine with the long vertical branch to the east of the nest. However, the Grackles made his visit a short one; dive bombing as usual. Trisha arrived very shortly after myself, and we stayed til 10. During the time that Trisha and I were there, we did see one chick back in the nest eating. Trisha felt it may have been Hope, and as I thought it had been Justice eating earlier, that made sense. A parent was still in the dead trees, preening and looking around. We were waiting for the parent to take off, and take off it did, as both chicks flew over our heads at the same time the parent flew. The kids circled around overhead for some time, looking so beautiful, until they circled way too high for sighting. Had to study the photos of the pursuing bird as I was not sure whether it might have been another eagle at some distance. Photos confirm its identity as an Osprey. The eagle was carrying a fish, which it undoubtedly had stolen from the Osprey. The eagle appears to be in third year plumage as its beak is mostly light and it has extensive white on its head, underparts and flight feathers. No residual juvenile primary feathers are evident although some secondaries appear not fully grown in and there is a trailing longer secondary feather which appears damaged or worn, on left wing..Since our local eagles hatch in January, it may be a very late second year but not a late third year/early fourth year plumage in my opinion. While nearly all other migratory birds head south after nesting and rearing their young, our local eagles do just the opposite-- they turn north. Well, this is not exactly the case, as Florida's adult Bald Eagles, especially those from the southernmost end of the peninsula, don't exhibit much wanderlust. Generally, the adults tend to wander locally, or at most, regionally in the lower third of the Sunshine State, while younger (especially first-year) birds often become long-distance travelers. Thanks to satellite radio tracking, we know that younger birds counter the prevailing trend by turning north in late June and July. Those that follow the Atlantic coast commonly end up at or near Chesapeake Bay, joined later by others of their species from more northern climes. Some young eagles may fly as far north as New England and Canada. Mary Lou and I, as \"migrants\" between Florida and Illinois, assumed we understood the rationale for this deviant behavior. Our Pembroke Pines eaglets hatched out in late December and January, just about the nicest time for them (and us) to enjoy life in South Florida. By then, hurricanes are but a memory, rainstorms are few, and bugs are less troublesome. Fish and long-legged wading birds, both important prey species for eagles, are concentrated in smaller pools of receding water. Parent eagles have no trouble finding food for their hungry and fast-growing broods. Who can blame the youngsters for getting out of the heat and incessant blackbird and mockingbird attacks, and for staying away until October or November, when the nights turn cool and the storms abate? As it turns out, our understanding of eagle behavior was rather simplistic. Like so many biologic phenomena, the explanation for the young eagles' \"reverse migration\" is no simple matter. First, why do the adults stick around while the youngsters take off for distant parts? Can it be that there are other hidden \"migrations\" that contribute to this deviant behavior? A more insightful rationale has been offered by Hawk Mountain scientists Keith Bildstein and Sarkis Acopian in \"Wrong\" Way Migrants, an article in this spring's Hawk Mountain News (cited in Illinois Audubon magazine, Summer 2010): \"...Bald Eagles that breed at the southeastern terminus of their range in peninsular Florida travel north during the non-breeding season rather than south, and their southbound journeys in autumn are flights that take them back to their breeding grounds, not away from them. Farther west, eagles that breed in southern Arizona and southern California do the same thing.\" The authors suggest that the seasonal vertical migration of fish is a very important causal factor in the migration of eagles. Up north, the fish retreat to deeper and warmer water as winter progresses. Northern eagles must move southward as fish become harder to find, and as lakes freeze up. Quite the opposite occurs in subtropical climes, as fish move down into deeper and cooler water in the heat of summer. Young eagles, less experienced hunters, are forced to seek colder bodies of water with more accessible fish. The eagles return south in autumn, when fish once again move up as the surface water cools: \"In Florida, vertical fish migrations create a situation in which prey are decidedly more available to surface-feeding eagles in winter-- and in comparison decidedly less so in summer-- exactly the opposite of what occurs farther north on the continent. Not surprisingly, in response to this phenomenon Florida eagles shift the timing of their nesting when surface fishing is easier...\" Adult eagles appear to be motivated to remain near their nesting and feeding territories all year long, to defend them against rivals. Interestingly, young eagles follow two general routes northward, either the Atlantic coastal plain, or the Appalachian mountain chain. Those who choose the latter tend to travel farther north, probably because they benefit from mountain-associated updrafts.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Why-do-Florida-Eagles-migrate-the-quot-wrong-way-quot-after-breeding-td5272606.html","images":0},{"id":"7574835","topic":"7574835","order":1,"title":"JAN 19 Update from Shawnlei Breeding, Audubon EagleWatch Program Manager","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2018-01-20T06:52:05.889000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"Happy New Year! I hope everyone is staying warm out there this week, especially all of the cute, fuzzy eaglets you’ve been reporting in the database. So far we’re up to 109 eaglets seen! For those watching nests that seem to be taking their time getting started, don’t give up hope. Some pairs didn’t lay eggs until Feb or March of last season. So keep going by your nests and reporting observations at least once a month through May to confirm if the nest is truly inactive or just a late-nesting pair. Thanks! I have a couple of important updates I wanted to share with you. As you may recall, back in April FWC approved revisions to the state Bald Eagle Rule (68A-16.002, F.A.C.), eliminating the need for applicants to obtain a state permit for activities with the potential to cause take or disturb Bald Eagles or their nests. Under the revisions, only a federal permit is now required. At that time, FWC also voted to replace the state’s Bald Eagle Management Plan with a non-regulatory Bald Eagle Species Action Plan which outlines actions to maintain a stable or increasing population of Bald Eagles in our state. Over the summer, FWC accepted comments from stakeholders and the public on a draft of the Bald Eagle Species Action Plan. FWC recently sent out an update that the new Species Action Plan is now complete and is available online: http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/managed/bald-eagle/ . I was also recently notified by US Fish and Wildlife Service that they are conducting aerial surveys of Bald Eagle nests in Florida over the next two weeks. They started in south Florida and will work their way north using a Kodiak floatplane. If you see a plane flying over your nest(s) in the next two weeks, it is likely their survey plane, but never hesitate to report any suspicious or harassing plane activity over a Bald Eagle nest to FWC and your regional Flight Standards District Office. For more information on reporting low flying planes, visit https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/field_offices/fsdo/atl/local_more/media/nlowfly.pdf . I’m continuing to go through the mid-season data and am happy to report that the majority of the pairs that we know lost their nests to Hurricane Irma have rebuilt and are nesting again! It is wonderful to see their resilience! And I so appreciate your diligent data collection, which makes it possible for us to track important productivity trends like these.
