I have seen swarms of flies on the eagle nests several times but generally assumed they were attracted to prey remains. Sometimes Turkey Vultures circle very close to the nest as they have such a strong sense of smell. I do not think we have Black Flies down here but there are other biting insects. They can cause stress and the youngest of the three eaglets starts out life with a great challenge, especially if it is a female as they tend not to be as submissive as a third male eaglet might be. Shawnlei may have some experience and thoughts or advice about this (copying her). I found an interesting article here and will quote a segment: https://journeynorth.org/tm/eagle/NestAbout.html \"Fresh Fish Deliveries Attract Flies to Nest Adult eagles obviously bring in a lot of fish for the 3 months their young are in the nest, and that can be quite an attraction to flies and other insects! It can also create quite a smell ! Occasionally, insect loads are so bad up in a nest, that a chick or two may die, due to stress and simply being bitten to death; I've seen this with black flies in our Adirondack region where bugs and insects are intense (I would imagine many parts of interior Canada are the same). Eagles might get some relief from this, by putting their nests up very high, and thus keeping up and away from insects as well as benefiting from more regular breezes, which act to keep bugs down. To help keep nests clean, eagles continuously add fresh vegetation to their nest, covering up old food. I have yet to see them actually \"clean-up\" their nest, however, by removing old fish scraps. Some nests get pretty gross with old, maggot-filled fish parts stuck in the sticks of the nest, baking in the hot sun! Eagles often build \"alternate\" nests, within their territory near their other nest, likely in an attempt to let one nest sit unused for a year or two, to allow it to \"weather\" and clean itself out...\"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sorry-to-say-it-looks-like-we-are-down-to-2-chicks-as-of-2-25-2021-td7575895.html","images":0},{"id":"7573136","topic":"7573136","order":1,"title":"one more day and no eagles","author":"MyEagle13","date":"2013-10-22T18:35:30.884000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"I was at the yesterday oct 21, between 7:30am stay there for about an hour and leave no eagles at that moment and then i return today oct 22, same time 7:30am spend another our no eagle than i decide i will spend the entire day observing the nest i left like at 9am than i return around 11am spend another maybe 2 hours i left for luch and came back at 3 until 5:23pm i had to stay inside my car was very hot and i left the nest so sad no eagles aorund the entire day hope they came back tomorow i will be back around 7am hopefully a better day for us!!!, i seriusly beleave they r kind of slow on nest restoration by this time of the month since none of them has been seen constiniusly on the nest but hey!! this is my opinion maybe i'm wrong HOPE I'M WRONG!!!!!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/one-more-day-and-no-eagles-td7573136.html","images":0},{"id":"7573137","topic":"7573136","order":2,"title":"Re: one more day and no eagles","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-10-22T18:53:02.987000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Take heart, last year the eagles were not seen with nesting materials until Oct 29. One adult, which turned out to be the female, was incubating deep in the nest. Almost immediately I spotted an adult flying high overhead, northbound from behind the melaleuca cemetery to the west of the nest. He crossed over Pines Boulevard, made a wide half circle towards the east, then began descending quite rapidly. He approached the nest from the west along the south side of Pines. As soon as he landed the female started vocalizing. She remained low in the nest for a while, then stood up, called some more and launched into flight, landing on the roadside pine just east of the nest, still calling. The male immediately settled down on the egg(s). Skies were mostly brightly overcast with lots of glare, and lighting conditions were very poor, but I was able to get a few shots from near the corner of SW 208th with the sun quartering from behind. Then she flew off to the west and disappeared to the south.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Another-exchange-of-incubation-duties-DEC-20-td7573288.html","images":8},{"id":"7573289","topic":"7573288","order":2,"title":"Re: Another exchange of incubation duties DEC 20","author":"Desiree","date":"2013-12-20T21:56:10.422000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Great pictures and nice update, Thanks!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Another-exchange-of-incubation-duties-DEC-20-td7573288.html","images":0},{"id":"7573292","topic":"7573288","order":3,"title":"Re: Another exchange of incubation duties DEC 20","author":"Lisa G","date":"2013-12-27T11:35:02.965000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Great Pictures of Pride & Joy Ken","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Another-exchange-of-incubation-duties-DEC-20-td7573288.html","images":0},{"id":"1651466","topic":"1651466","order":1,"title":"Eagles may be laying eggs","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2008-12-13T06:44:03.571000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"The behavior of the eagles suggests that they are now entering the egg-laying phase, which may take 3-5 days, as up to three eggs may be deposited. Ken Today my Grandfather took me out to see the eagles. First I had trouble adjusting the binoculars but Grandpa helped me and I could see the eagles plain as day. I saw two eaglets. One was standing up and the other was sitting down. The one that was standing up did not have any white on its chest whatsoever and was also exercising its wings. When the other one stood up it had a white V on its chest. Grandpa said that the one with the white was Honor, the oldest one, and the other was Glory. We went over to some dead trees to see if we could spot the parents but they were not there, so we went back. Then Grandpa heard and saw a Pileated Woodpecker. I didn't see it but heard it nice and clear. Then one of the parents flew in. Grandpa was pretty sure it was Pride (the Dad) but wasn't so sure. It could have been Joy (the Mom). Whichever parent it was, it brought a fish. Honor picked up the fish in her beak but Glory just waited nicely. The eaglets mobbed the parent and he flew to a branch just over the nest and stayed there for a few minutes. During that time they were calling to him. Then Pride flew over to some dead trees along the road. We darted over and Grandpa wanted the bird to look straight out so that he could see whether it was the male or the female by the shape of its head. Its feathers were all ruffled up and it had its back to us so he did not get a good glance so he checked the pictures as soon as he got home. It was the male (Pride). When we got home he asked me if he could take a picture of the Mediterranean Gecko we caught. I told him where to look for it because I saw one there the last time I was visiting. At that time I found a baby Gecko. This time when Grampa caught it he scared his tail off! He thought it was a worm of some kind because it was wiggling, but I knew it was the tail. I was laughing so hard! When a gecko sees one of its most feared predators, it will drop its tail so the predator will go after it, which allows the gecko to sneak off and regrow its tail. </body> </html>","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Monday-March-17-Glory-was-flapping-his-wings-11-00-AM-td7573438.html","images":10},{"id":"7573439","topic":"7573438","order":2,"title":"Re: Monday March 17 Glory was flapping his wings 11:00 AM","author":"Lisa G","date":"2014-03-17T23:29:41.116000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Great job From your Granddaughter Ken .. Sad to say but that's just politics for you :) We need to do things ourselves. It's called doing volunteer work. If you're a photographer who takes quality photos go out to the nest, and take some real nice photos of the Eagles and eaglets, and perhaps we can collect the best ones, and then use them for next years 2014 calender. If you're a graphics designer you can volunteer by designing a fancy logo to which you can use the photos taken by the volunteer photographers, and then possibly produce some T-shirts to sell to the public. It would be a source of income to help pay for the web camera, and for the maintenance. While donating money is nice... people are much more willing to donate money if they know they will get something back so perhaps we can all think of something to sell to the public. merchandise is the key. And whom ever donates the highest can receive the right to have their companies logo on the webcam for a year. While the power distribution pole in front of the nest would provide a fairly good view, FP&L does not permit it to be used for such purpose. The tree sways and the image quality would often be poor. Putting it on a nearby tree would introduce even greater instability. Putting in a tall pole would involve creation of a path for heavy equipment, which would cause unacceptable disruption of the habitat. It would need to be seated deeply, as guy wires would be a collision hazard for the eagles. The nest is very high, and the camera would best be placed on the nest tree, just above the nest, so that it would move with the nest when the tree sways. The Florida FWC does not favor using the nest tree for this purpose, out of concern that it might cause disturbance to the eagles and possible abandonment of the nest. These barriers could probably be overcome. Any construction near the nest must take place outside the nesting season (October 1 through May 15), which is an increasingly wet time of year. Planning and all necessary funds and approvals must be obtained in advance of this short window of opportunity. Previous plans have been drawn up in hopes of obtaining electric power and broadband support from the utility providers. The most recent plan involved solar power and a camera with a transmitter that would send the signal to the nearby high school. The nest is protected on City land and the project enjoys the continuing support of the Mayor, and also officials of West Broward High School. No one is opposed to it. It simply comes down to funding. We always felt that if Comcast/NBC and/or FP&L (or any local or even national corporation or conservation-minded organization) recognized the positive exposure (and possibility of advertising profits from hosting a web site) that could be gained by sponsoring the nest, it would be a no-brainer for them to support the project. These entities so far have been approached and no funding has been generated. The nest tree is an exotic Australian Pine, prone to toppling over in a wind storm. Native pines often are flat-topped, offering good platforms for construction of a large nest. Australian Pines tend to have one central leader and grow up to a narrow point with few large lateral branches. The nest tree is unusual in this respect-- perhaps the central leader was damaged when young, and this caused the heavier side branches to sprout and eventually form a sturdy crotch for the nest. Although eagles will often rebuild nearby when a nest is lost, there may not be suitable substitutes within this pair's territory. Eagles often construct secondary or alternate nests, but we are not aware of any in this case. This situation poses an added concern.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/web-cam-td7572958.html","images":0},{"id":"7572963","topic":"7572958","order":6,"title":"Re: web cam","author":"Myeagle13","date":"2013-02-22T20:20:06.881000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"Well thank u really for all of u that try to explain to me this situation, i unfortunately do not work, and have no money to invest but that idea of trying to recollect money really like it so i will work on that and which the explanation of the administrator i totally understood how hard this will be, is just that i'm so happy to have this unique birds so close to me that i really wanna do something for them, the other day in the middle of pembroke pines road just almost in front of the nest there was t dead raccoons and i told to myself well they could try to get roadkill fresh food but they can get hit by a car so i call different entities and finally was animal control of broward who told me they will definitely will pick them up and they did it and really fast and i felt at that moment i'm so proud i just did something for them it really make me feel good, they will be safe i and will do it again :)","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/web-cam-td7572958.html","images":0},{"id":"7572964","topic":"7572958","order":7,"title":"Re: web cam","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-02-23T08:58:49.786000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"Myeagle13 wrote ... the other day in the middle of pembroke pines road just almost in front of the nest there was t dead raccoons and i told to myself well they could try to get roadkill fresh food but they can get hit by a car so i call different entities and finally was animal control of broward who told me they will definitely will pick them up and they did it and really fast and i felt at that moment i'm so proud i just did something for them it really make me feel good, they will be safe i and will do it again :) That was really a good deed for the eagles! Motor vehicles are the major cause of death for eagles that nest in urban areas. Young eagles that have not fully developed their hunting skills often flock with the vultures at roadkill and are especially vulnerable. However, the availability of a food source so close to the nest would have been a major temptation for the parents. Congratulations!! As for financing the nest camera, the key would be to find a major organization or company that could provide a large grant (in the range of $10-15,000.00) for the equipment and installation costs. The ongoing operating costs could more easily funded by appealing for smaller donations from the general public and local businesses.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/web-cam-td7572958.html","images":0},{"id":"3021879","topic":"3021879","order":1,"title":"Report on Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-06-03T20:18:11.220000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"On the afternoon of May 1, Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis met with members of the the group, including Doug Young (President of South Florida Audubon and chair), Dean Piper (PP Planning & Zoning, for Sharon Williams), Beverly Gallagher (School Board Member, Dist. 2), Victor Suarez (Flyway Cities Coalition), Brian Mealey, Kelly Smith, Barry Heimlich (of Audubon), Ken Schneider, and Al Griffin (veteran nest watcher and new member). Mayor Ortis reiterated his support for protecting the local eagle nest. The Steering Committee presented the City with draft language for official designation of the sanctuary, as well as a model ordinance that would amend the planning and zoning permit process to assure that any proposed disturbances near the nest complies with Florida FWC Bald Eagle Management Guidelines. The group decided to prioritize the sanctuary's needs, among which are a permanent security fence, adequate and safe visitor parking, a semi-permanent observation area, an information kiosk and/or shelter, the need to preserve roosting trees, for raptor deterrents on the power poles, a source of volunteer interpreters, and placement of an “eagle cam.” Since the City controls only the land inside the fence line, the observation area would need to be placed on State DOT property. Approval for an eagle cam could take up to a year. Any structure may raise zoning as well as liability issues. Contacts are already underway with FPL and Florida DOT, as well as South Florida Water management District, which owns all the land to the south and west of the \"eagle forest.\" Subsequent meetings will involve these groups. All in all, we are very encouraged about the City's support. I feel that one thing that must be preserved is the grass-roots involvement of local eagle watchers. I pointed out that there have been over 37,000 visits to this FORUM, which does not even count all the e-mails that go out to participants to keep them abreast of events at the nest. This is merely an index of the degree of local interest in the protection of this magnificent bird. Although the Bald Eagle is holding its own statewide in Florida, the threat of local extinction of new urban eagle families is ever present. Select: \"New Topic\" or \"Reply\" --> \"Insert Image\" --> choose either to upload from your computer or copy the image's address from the internet If you do choose the latter option, the display photo on many sites such as Facebook or Flicker etc may not be in JPG format, so you may need to click on it to view it in a separate window which may be JPG or provide options such as \"save image URL\" or format or size. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" Generally, the \"Large\" size option works fine, as it resizes the image to fit the screen. Also let the image \"float\" inside any text you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere in your message. If you have trouble viewing it you may visit this PERMALINK Many people across the country and the planet are monitoring the progress of a pair of Bald Eagles in Decorah, Iowa. A nest camera with excellent video quality is mounted in the nest tree and looks directly into the nest, 80 feet above the ground. As the 35th day of incubation drew near, Mary Lou and I were continually checking the three eggs for signs that an eaglet was pipping the shell. The first eaglet hatched out on April 2, 2011 (this is a screenshot from the Decorah nest camera): We have a particular interest in Bald Eagles, as we have been involved in protecting a recently discovered nest in our south Florida neighborhood. Coincidentally, the eaglets in our local nest are just taking their first flights as the Decorah eaglets are hatching. We first became aware of the local pair of eagles when I photographed them mating on the rooftop of a house just across the lake from our home. Bald Eagles mating, December 4, 2007: As there had not been a record of an active Bald Eagle nest in Broward County since several years before DDT was abolished in the early 1970s, I reported the sighting on the Tropical Audubon Society's Web page. A biologist who lived about 1 1/2 miles from our home got back to me with word that she had been seeing eagles in her neighborhood. She had a general idea of where they might be breeding, but was unable to find their nest. By chance, Kelly Smith, a local middle school teacher found the nest in March, 2008. The nest was located only about [specific street address withheld] in the neighboring City of Pembroke Pines, and it contained one nearly full-grown eaglet. This photo of \"P. Piney One\" was taken by Kelly Smith on March 15, 2008 and is reproduced here with her permission: Residents in the area of the nest had been seeing eagles for at least a couple of years before the nest was \"discovered,\" but no one ever pinpointed its location and reported it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) which is charged with protecting the eagles under federal and state laws and regulations. The pair of eagles have returned to the same nest each year, successfully raising and fledging two chicks in 2009 and three in 2010. This past October they again set up housekeeping, and have produced two more eaglets. Since the nest is about 50 feet high in an exotic pine tree with smaller trees blocking most of the view, we only can obtain distant looks. Oh, how we would like to have an eagle nest camera on a par with the Decorah cam! Our local \"Pines\" nest could kick off the viewing season before Christmas and be followed by shows from more northerly locations. On December 11, 2008, both adults are shown sitting on the nest, only two days before the first of two eggs was laid:: Local middle school students conducted a nationwide poll that chose names for the two eaglets, “Hope” and \"Justice:” They hatched on January 15,2009. Here they are, squabbling with each other at exactly one month of age. Hope, the older and larger, is on the left: The eagle nest attracted a great deal of attention, and crowds of up to 100 people came to see the antics of the eaglets, causing traffic hazards as they stopped on the roadway and parked illegally. The Mayor took an interest in the nest, which is located on City of Pembroke Pines property. The media hyped the story, increasing the crowds and the threat to public safety, leading to restrictions for pedestrians and motorists in the area of the nest. The Mayor announced his intention to declare the site a City Bald Eagle Sanctuary, and appointed a steering committee to provide advice on measures to protect both the eagles and observers. The Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee embarked on a (so far) unsuccessful attempt to install a web camera. Prospective funding sources evaporated, and the power company backed off from their earlier assurances to sponsor and permit a camera on a pole directly in front of the nest. Likewise, plans for support by the state highway authority to fund a camera fell through. The good news is that the City has amended its planning documents to pave the way for an ordinance that will provide safeguards against disturbance of any eagle nest in the city. The Mayor views the nest with a reporter and a news photographer: I photographed these three eaglets on March 2, 2010. The Middle School students' poll resulted in them being named Chance, Lucky and Courage. All three fledged successfully: The eagles returned in October, 2010 to refurbish the nest, and eggs were laid around December 11. ( * See end note about how we estimate the time of egg laying and hatching). On January 23, 2011 at the age of about 9 days, this chick was first seen, peering over the nest rim: Here, it waits as its parent tears off a bit of food. A younger sibling has not yet been visible from the ground: The Parent eagle feeds the chick : This was about as good a view we could get from 150 feet. Plans for a nest camera did not materialize: Here is the older of the two eaglets, on February 3, 2011. Much of her natal down has already disappeared: At one month old, on February 15, 2011, the down has been reduced to a fuzzy cap: Less than two weeks later, on February 27, the eaglets look almost as large as adults. We call them \"P. Piney Seven & Eight.\" Bald Eagles exhibit sexual dimorphism that starts when they are nestlings, with the females usually considerably larger than males. PP 7 is the larger and is presumed to be a female: At two and a half months of age on March 23 they are exercising their wings, preparing for their first flight, which usually occurs when they are between 10 and 12 weeks old. PP7, on the right, has more white underneath than her younger brother: On March 30, 2011, we found PP8 alone in the nest; PP7 had flown off, but returned within three days to be fed: On March 30, PP8 was \"helicoptering,\" hovering in place up to a foot off the ground: Here, on April 3, 2011, PP7 roosts in a tree next to the nest. PP8 is flying on branches in the nest tree but has not been observed in free flight: * In estimating the timing of the laying of eggs and hatching of the eaglets, we must depend upon clues from changes in the behavior of the adults. The onset of incubation coincides with the laying of the first egg, which is when we suddenly see one of the pair down deep and immobile in the nest. Hatching is a time of excitement, as the parents shift position frequently, peer down into the nest, and they start bringing in prey and tearing off bits to feed the tiny chick. The adults also sit a bit higher in the nest after the first egg hatches, supporting themselves on their wings to form a \"tent\" to shelter the chick and yet provide warmth to any eggs that have not yet hatched. Volunteer nest observers share their sightings in the Pembroke Pines Eagle Nest Watch FORUM at this link.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/quot-Pining-quot-for-a-Bald-Eagle-Nest-Camera-td6247537.html","images":19},{"id":"3188758","topic":"3188758","order":1,"title":"Wakodahatchee and Green Cay","author":"Trisha","date":"2009-07-01T08:42:31.801000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I finally made it to these 2 beautiful preserves and it was more than worth the trip. Trisha and Kino later looked further west in the maleleuca forest. Kino spotted both Hope and Justice some distance south of Pines Blvd. and west of SW 209 Avenue. Trisha described both birds as being well back away from the road and very difficult to see due to the low malaleucas. At 7:30 pm, both flew onto a branch about 15 feet above the their nest. At one point, both birds went airborne and flew one at a time almost directly over our heads. It was quite a display. We were all swinging our cameras into the air trying to get a clear shot. As of this writing, I know I got nothing, however, I hope Trisha and Kino had better luck. About 7:45 pm, one flew due east but we lost sight of it behind the tall pines. The other followed a few minutes later. Trish, Kino and I all walked east trying to spot the young eagles. I finally moved about 30 yards further east and saw them sitting together on a pine perch about [specific street address withheld]. This new location was about half way between our normal viewing site and 208th Avenue (hereafter referred to as the \"eastern perch\"). A mocking bird did a few dives at and around both eagles, but they didn't seem too concerned and merely turned their heads to watch as the mocker came in from different directions and from above and below. It certainly appears that the siblings still prefer to stay together much of the time, at least from these latest observations. I left the site at 8:00 pm with Hope and Justice looking very comfortable on their new perch. This is, as you stated, to help get the order of events straight since we cannot know in advance which day will be the last that we see our Hope & Justice. Last evening, I met at 6:30 pm with Trisha, Carolyn, and Eileen Soler from The Miami Herald. Hope & Justice were both perched to the east of the nest about 70 yards almost due south of the 'Rose Price Park' sign on the highway. They remained there until shortly after 8:00 pm. I was curious as to whether or not they would roost there overnight. So, I went out this morning at the first light of day. It was 5:55 am. There was just enough light a few minutes after 6 am to discern one juvenile silhouetted against the sky. It sat still with its back to me and head down, not moving at all. At 6:12 am, the head came up and it appeared that the bird (Justice I believe) was just waking up. I began rolling the video and captured some stretches and scratches, and another mocker attack, until it flew off to the nest at 6:29 am. When I moved back to watch the nest, both juveniles were on the nest and stayed there until flying off at 6:50 am; first one and then the other about a minute later. Also FYI, Eileen is preparing a report on eagles. She took lost of pictures and expects the piece to run in this Sunday's Miami Herald (Mother's Day). Hope to see you both soon. It was flying very low, east to west, just inside the power lines and I assumed it had been on the nest. I had just opened the car door and was getting out when the eagle came right at me (no camera, of course). I saw Carolyn and Eileen in front of the nest so as soon as I got down there I asked them about the adult and they hadn't seen it flying around at all. After the adult flew right over me it turned southwest and circled back to the east far out in the dead trees. Carolyn walked down later and spotted it far back in the maleleucas, on a very low perch. It never joined all the nest activity with the young described by Lou. I wonder if all the attacks by multiple small birds both at the nest and the branches above and all around their previous, favorite perches in the tall pines is causing the eagles to seek out perches in different locations where we have not seen them before? The attacking birds seem to follow and find them where ever they are in the wooded area. The eagles keep flying from branch to branch, tree to tree, trying to find peace and quiet!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Friday-evening-May-1-Both-juveniles-spotted-td2758438.html","images":0},{"id":"7576228","topic":"7576228","order":1,"title":"Nest Visit 5/24/2021","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2021-05-24T23:04:31.183000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hello Eagle Fans, Well they young eagles are still with us, I went t see if the adults were going to come home to sleep at the nest area at sundown and I heard the sound of a young eagle cry or call, then I heard a second call from a slightly different heading, so I knew there was two young eagles in roughly the same area. Her age was evident even with her back to us, as she had dark tips on her tail feathers and several dark feathers on her undertail coverts. Eating prey: Under-tail coverts Top of tail: She turned to afford a view of her head, which appeared to be almost entirely white except for several scattered dark feathers. There was no longer a suggestion of an eye line and her bill was bright yellow with only a hint of dark pigment near the base and culmen. Her gape extended over half way behind her eye, which along with her size confirmed she is the female, most likely the first new female (\"Newfie\") that has accompanied the male many times since early November. She flew up to roost to the right of the nest: Note a few darker feathers on head and irregular margin where white head feathers meet dark body: The fact that she was eating on the nest raises the question of whether she had caught the prey or it had been left there by the old male (Pride) to attract her to the nest. They were photographed copulating yesterday and there may be a chance that they will breed, although it would be outside the normal time limits that have enhanced survival of south Florida eagles which matched the time of maximum prey availability for the growing eaglets and avoided the highest danger of heat stress, permitting them to migrate north in the summer when water is cooler and fish are closer to the surface and easier for young eagles to catch.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-26-1-15-PM-quot-Newfie-quot-is-on-the-nest-td7573941.html","images":6},{"id":"2523133","topic":"2523133","order":1,"title":"Suggestion re: sign about calling for help if chick falls","author":"Ken Schneider","date":"2009-03-23T15:59:03.682000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Trisha has come up with an interesting suggestion, as anxiety about the possibility of the chicks falling to the ground is increasing. It is worth considering, but I'm not sure of the best approach, so I am sharing this with other nest watchers for your ideas. Let us know what you think. Trisha wrote: \"A thought occurred to me as I was leaving and telling everyone about dialing [#FWC or *FWC] if they saw any mishap with the eagles. We could have a sign that read something like 'Call [#FWC or *FWC] if you see any of the eagles fall or injured.' I even thought we could paint the message on the backs of the signs (the brown side) that are already there. At least anyone there watching who may not have seen your site or hasn't talked to one of us would know what to do in case of an accident.\" Mary Lou and I watched the nest from 9:00 to 11:00 AM this morning. We, too, had a bit of a scare. There were 5 or 6 of us there. The chicks had been fed and Hope became extremely frisky, jumping and flapping on the far right side of the nest. Justice just watched from the opposite side. The wind was quite gusty, blowing from left to right and a couple of times it blew Hope almost to the edge. All of us looked away for a minute or two, as we were talking about something, and suddenly there was only little Justice, still sitting in place, with Hope nowhere in sight. About 15-20 minutes passed with no sign of the larger chick. We all thought it had disappeared too suddenly and really feared she had fallen to the ground. One watcher called one of the City Commissioners to get Shawn Denton's phone number, as he wanted to get permission or assistance in reaching the nest tree to look for her. Thank goodness, but right in the middle of his conversation a wing popped up on the right side of the nest! We must follow some guidelines to prevent such a false alarm, as Michele also went a half hour on Saturday without seeing either chick. I'm afraid other observers who are not accustomed to the birds' habits could make unnecessary calls. Maybe the message should be to report the incident if a chick is seen falling to the ground, or if both chicks are not seen over the space of one hour. The most important time would be in the afternoon, as a grounded eaglet would have to be rescued before nightfall to protect it from predators such as foxes and bobcats that surely visit the nest tree to pick up scraps. Perhaps we should get permission from someone in the City to enter the posted area to confirm that an eagle is down. Of course, it should never be handled, as its talons can cause severe injuries. A first step might be to call the Police non-emergency number [phone withheld]) for advice and assistance. A number of City firemen and police are already regular \"unofficial\" watchers. The city might be provided with the other contact numbers to avoid \"false alarms.\" I know that many of us are spending time watching outside of the \"scheduled\" hours, and a number of the \"regulars\" who are not on this list could be provided with information. The more eyes on the nest, the better. I am copying all the watchers and other interested parties with your suggestion, to see if they can offer more concrete advice, perhaps based upon their own experience. Note that the cell numbers for the FWS emergency line are *FWC and #FWC, or [phone withheld]. Brian Mealey's (the biologist who said he would respond to retrieve a fallen eaglet) phone number is [phone withheld]. As this is not breeding season we may expect the adults to wander in the general locality of their nest territories, and even migrate further north. We have generally presumed that the Weston sightings represented locally breeding birds. The head was completely white and the entire body and wings dark brown. It was a very large eagle. I only had my iphone with me and didn't think I could get a good picture. Thanks for all the info about their range. My sister lives in the Weston area so I'm there pretty frequently and I'll keep an eye out in the future. I really wasn't expecting to see an eagle, so it was pretty exciting. It's so common place in the Western US -- I see them all the time out there when I visit. But it feels pretty special to see one in South FL. Again, thanks for the info. He was fairly sure they exchanged places at the nest. All I saw was the top of the adult's head. A little later I heard from Phil, who has been making frequent checks on the nest. He said \"I feel certain that an egg hatched on Mon-Tues of this week [DEC 31/JAN 1]. Behaviors during those days, including Wed confirm that for me...\" The fact that prey is being brought in does not confirm this, as sometimes a mate will feed the one incubating, but we should be looking for signs that feeding activity is occurring. Once there is a chick in the nest the adult will sit up a bit higher, \"tenting\" the hatchling as well as continuing to incubate any additional eggs if they are present. Of course, seeing an eaglet will be great, so please make frequent visits and do not congregate near the nest as this is a sensitive time for the eagles. He was actively tearing at prey and small bits could be seen as he dipped down into the left side of the nest. He then appeared to do the same more to the right. The brown needles of the fallen branch obscure much of the front of the nest. We never saw and eaglet but feel this is pretty good confirmation that one or more is present. We returned and brought our granddaughter out to see the eagle nest a little before 11:00 AM this morning and watched until 11:35. Benjamin was already there and reported seeing that both adults were on the nest and evidence that one or more eaglets were being fed. He did not see the eaglet. The male soon flew to roost just above and next to the nest, then flew away to the SE at 11:20 AM. The female (Jewel) remained on the nest, sitting quite high. Our granddaughter watched the nest through our spotting scope and said that she thought Jewel had something wrong with her right eye because she kept closing it and shaking her head. The photos show this as well, and the open eye looks a bit red and is not bright yellow. When open there is no sign of swelling.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/More-evidence-that-eaglet-s-is-are-being-fed-td7574436.html","images":6},{"id":"7574437","topic":"7574436","order":2,"title":"Re: More evidence that eaglet(s) is/are being fed","author":"Lisa G","date":"2016-03-24T16:49:50.939000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Well I was there about 2 hours and seen 2 feedings and Glad we confirmed yesterday there is a Baby in the nest :) There is nothing wrong with Jewel Eye . The eaglet was active and moving about the nest from side to side with the parent constantly watching it. Both the adult and the eaglet sounded just before the other adult landed on the nest. The second parent landed on the West side of the nest and was greeted by the eaglet. It then proceeded to feed the eaglet for some time from food, looking like fish, that was already in the nest. When there was no food being offered for a short period of time the eaglet let the parent know it wanted more by chomping on its beak. Eventually the second eagle that was above the nest flew off to the South East. I watched the adult feed the eaglet off and on for a little over a half hour and both were still on the nest when I left around 2:45 PM. I had trouble getting a clear shot because of the intervening pine needles. It is interesting that this eaglet is not yet climbing out on the branches. In past years the age at fledging ranged between 68 to 81 days. Assuming it was the first hatched, around January 1, 2013, this chick is just about 82 days old, so it should fly off any day now.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/March-23-2013-Early-Afternoon-td7572981.html","images":0},{"id":"7572983","topic":"7572981","order":3,"title":"Re: March 23, 2013 - Early Afternoon","author":"tczig","date":"2013-03-23T22:38:48.847000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"You guys all take awesome photographs!! I too had LOTs of shots with the trees in the way. Luck plays such a Hugh role in it. It just happened that the breeze was blowing enough at the time that I could snap off a couple of shots when the tree branches moved past the nest in one direction and then a couple more when it swayed out of the way in the opposite direction. I know you know exactly what I am talking about from viewing your great shots Ken, because when the wind isn't blowing at all a good bit of the nest is concealed. I wonder if single Eaglets tend to fledge later than those with siblings. The ones over in North Ft. Meyers have been hopping out to branches a lot lately! Intuitively, I assumed that having others competing for space just to flap their wings might cause those with siblings to branch earlier, and thus depart at a younger age. Our limited experience ( as shown on our summary of observations at this link ) supports this supposition but is not conclusive. The earlier multiple broods flew sooner but the 2010 nest with three eaglets took the longest to both branch and take their first flights. I wonder whether any scientific study has been done to test this hypothesis. Maybe the \"little\" eaglet (now bigger than her parents) just enjoys all the special attention and has less incentive to leave the nest. Some experts have alleged (but we have not witnessed) that the parents starve the eaglet in the days before fledging in order to reduce its body weight and make the first flight easier. As David's photos show, this one is still being fed small portions as if it were a a baby. In the past we have seen the eaglets \"attack\" the parent at food drops and compete with nest-mates for the prey. Certainly the parents do drop food on the nest to attract the eaglet back after it fledges.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/March-23-2013-Early-Afternoon-td7572981.html","images":0},{"id":"7572995","topic":"7572981","order":8,"title":"Re: March 23, 2013 - Early Afternoon","author":"Desiree","date":"2013-03-28T16:15:37.482000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"Great Pictures, I miss the little one, what lens are you using?","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/March-23-2013-Early-Afternoon-td7572981.html","images":0},{"id":"7574207","topic":"7574207","order":1,"title":"NOV 7, 7:30 AM-- Both eagles together at nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-11-08T13:19:09.505000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"I arrived at the nest at about 7:30 AM. Luis was already there. He said both eagles had come in about 15 minutes before. The female spent some time on the nest and then joined the male (in the foreground in this photo) on the support branch just to the right of the nest. They stayed together, almost shoulder-to-shoulder for about a half hour until we left. Luis said they did a lot of calling when they began to roost together. We had checked the nest several mornings during the past week and never found the eagles to be present.
