Now in its 20th year, this report provides information on the status of wading bird nesting around the Greater Everglades Ecosystem. Wading birds are valuable ecological indicators that provide insights into the health of this unique ecosystem. Twenty years of data show that while state and federal restoration managers are making progress, much work remains to save the River of Grass and its avian inhabitants. The 2014 report shows that wading bird nesting was 28% lower than last year. Contributors to the report (including Audubon Florida) recorded a total of 34,714 nests. Little Blue Herons, Tricolored Herons, and Snowy Egrets showed the most dramatic reductions in nesting, dropping by 83%, 42%, and 47% respectively. The decline in nesting of these and other wading birds species is due to the lack of suitable foraging habitat across South Florida, highlighting the urgency of Everglades restoration projects. The survival of wading birds in the Everglades depends on how quickly important restoration projects move forward and restore the flow of freshwater. Download Audubon’s Fact Sheet on this year’s wading bird nesting efforts and to see our recommendations for ensuring the recovery of populations in decline and to learn where restoration efforts are allowing bird populations to bounce back. The larger of the two eaglets disappeared about 10 days ago and is presumed to have been taken by a predator such as a bobcat or fox. Since there is only one eaglet there is less need for it to return to the nest for feeding. FDOT should be making plans for the next breeding season. The nest is on FDOT land and the agency is aware of its responsibilities to protect the nest during both breeding and non-breeding season (and even after/if the eagles fail to return next year). We can expect to see parking prohibitions along the shoulder of the highway on-ramp as this is a high speed roadway and people pulling out or slowing down create a driving hazard. No Parking signs go up for the entire area around the nest and FHP will start issuing tickets to any vehicles illegally parked. For this reason and also because the viewing opportunities can be expected to be much less frequent, visitors are discouraged. A couple of days ago a parent was seen feeding the eaglet a fish in a tree not far from the nest. The young bird carried it to the nest to eat it, indicating it already has a degree of independence.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Parking-prohibitions-expected-and-visiting-nest-discouraged-td7573514.html","images":0},{"id":"7573555","topic":"7573514","order":2,"title":"Re: Parking prohibitions expected and visiting nest discouraged","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2014-05-08T09:05:48.491000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Photo of nest tree. This morning (April 4) around 9:00 AM we found the younger eaglet (Glory) alone on the nest. Glory is the 13th eaglet known to have hatched since 2008. Her older sister (Honor) was not in sight, and neither was any adult while we watched for about an hour. Honor was 82 days old when she left the nest. We expect her to return to the nest within a day or so, driven by hunger. The adults will continue to bring prey to the nest and eat it there themselves, enticing the eaglet to return for food. Last year, P Piney 10, the single surviving eaglet, took her first flight on March 26th at 86 days of age. In past seasons the eaglets fledged at 68 to 91 days of age.(average 79.75 days, median 79 days, N=8 ). In 2012, P Piney 9 was believed not to be prepared for flight when he/she disappeared at a presumed age of about 65 days and was never relocated; P Piney 1 was already flying free when discovered on March 15, 2008. In any event, it tore repeatedly at the prey as if taking off small portions, and put its head down into the nest. Leave obscured my shots at first, and when I finally found the \"sweet spot\" to the east of the nest it had finished feeding, but still was looking down into the nest. After about 10 minutes the second eagle flew to the melaleucas to the west. Both members of the pair roosted on adjacent melaleuca snags. Mary Lou mentioned that it was unusual to not see at least one member of the pair standing guard at the nest, or brooding the very young chick (and incubating egg(s)?), especially with the rain falling. I have a pair of bald eagles building a nest in a pine tree in my backyard, about 300 feet from my back door (based on google satellite view measurement tool) I don't know if this is a young pair building a first nest, or an older pair building a new nest because the tree their old one was in was felled by Laura (estimates are something like $1.2 Billion in timber was destroyed by Laura, around 1 in 4 large trees damaged of felled). We have been seeing bald eagles with increasing frequency the last few years, with one being seen from the house multiple times per week the last couple of years, there are multiple known nests along the shores of a mid sized lake about 3-4 miles away from the house. Anyway I am posting here as I have not found any more appropriate web forum out there to discus photographing, observing and discussing southern bald eagle nests. If you know of any others please let me know. I am attaching a couple of photos I have taken of the eagles since new years, one was taken just before sunset yesterday. The photo on the nest was taken with a 24X superzoom camera then cropped for size, the one of the eagle on the post was taken from about 100 feet away out on my cell phone out the window of my car (I had to drive by the post to get out of my driveway). That is the female eagle on the nest, as evidenced by the fact that the gape (corner) of her large bill extends back all the way under her eye. That of the smaller male usually does not extend beyond about 1/4 to 1/[specific street address withheld] under his eye. You are so lucky having the nest so close to your home. I hope you will be able to document many events in the lives of the pair. You might consider reaching out to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries-- their Facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/ldwffb/ as well as Audubonn Louisiana at https://www.facebook.com/audubonlouisiana Members of this FORUM will be very interested in hearing more about these eagles as they hopefully progress to lay eggs and rais a family. If they succeed they will very likely continue to use this nest in future breeding seasons. This is presently the best sub-Forum to use, but all subscribers are able to access it and add their comment. I lived in New Orleans during Hurricane Camille, which at the time was the strongest storm to ever hit that city. We in Florida also appreciate how hurricanes can ravage natural habitats. Thank you for joining our group! <\\b> Isaac-1 wrote Hi, I hope it is ok for me to post here as I do not live in Florida, instead I live in rural western Louisiana about 80 miles inland along the path devastated by hurricane Laura last summer. I drove slowly but when I was about 75 feet away the eagle took off, circled while I drove down the road, and landed back by post. That was the second time yesterday I saw it on that post, perhaps it will be back there today and I can get a better photo using a better camera. Nestlings give out a loud cheeping sound. The male juveniles are said to have higher pitched calls than the females. Individual adults may be identified by differences between their calls (amost the same way individual whales are identified on sonograms). You may notice this when you hear both calling simultaneously. They call very loudly together in courtship and when copulating, also often when exchanging incubation duties. From Cornell Lab \"Birds of the World:\" \"Three distinctive calls described with sonograms by Verner and Lehman (154), based on human approach to nesting birds. “Wail” seldom given; “peal” often given in response to human approach, consists of high-pitched, prolonged, gull-like cry often repeated 3–5 times. Chatter Call (Figure 3A), most common response, usually consists of 3 or 4 introductory notes separated by short gaps of silence (< 1 s) followed by a rapid sequence of descending notes, usually 6–9 notes in call sequence (kwit kwit kwit kwit kee-kee-kee-kee-ker). \"Female will give single, soft, high-pitched note repeated several times, unlike any other calls in nature; apparently signals to male readiness for copulation (155). Territorial adult emits “threat vocalization,” a high-pitched peal (Figure 3B), when other birds or humans approach nest site as defense mechanism (12). Will also emit a short, staccato Hic Call while circling over nests (156). Male and female often vocalize after returning to nest, suggestive of some form of greeting but actual function unknown. Individuals also give threat vocalization (“peal”) to fend off attack at communal feeding sites (127).\" Ref: Buehler, D. A. (2020). Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), version 1.0. In 2009, there were 1340 active nests that produced 1796 young birds, or 1.34 per active nest. Successful nests produced an average of 1.62 young. \"The numbers from the 2008/2009 nesting survey represent an estimated population of between 3,565 (breeding adults, non-breeders, and subadults) and 5,360 (breeding adults, non-breeders, subadults, and young produced in 2009). It was still very windy with heavy clouds and new storm approaching at 9:15. There was light rain and increasing gusts at 9:38. Nest tree was swaying wildly. The wind let up a bit and it stopped raining by the time we departed at around 9:45 AM Review of reported ground observations indicates that incubation began with the onset of the female's continuous deep position in the nest between January 1 and 4. Before that and up to the end of December both adults were seen leaving the nest unattended for various periods of time. This never happened after the eggs were deposited during previous breeding seasons, but of course anything may be possible. And that is also why the nest looks so small if you look close you can see the nest is barely big enough for mama to sit in, I hope they can build it in time for eggs. Everyone please try to stay out of site during the first few weeks while they work on the nest, try not to park in the open, we were east of the fence and walked up to the big sign that crosses the highway so we could hide behind the pole and stay out of sight. I'm just concerned that they might get spooked. Thanks everyone for helping and I hope they stay here this year as it is much easier to see them. One more thing is be careful parking by the big sign as there is a dranage ditch there that you can fall into with your car, so be careful. The optimal time for laying eggs and successfully raising a family has passed. The female seems not to act \"broody\" at all. Normally, based upon our observations over the years, we would expect her, once she is carrying a fertilized egg, to spend much time in and on the nest for several days before the egg is laid. The timing of the breeding season must be embedded in their genes. They must get their young flying out and about before the worst heat of the summer, as fish are harder to catch the warmer the water gets. Then the young must be old enough to migrate north for cooler water before the end of June. Young and inexperienced birds of many species are know to have difficulty with their first clutch of eggs. They are now two months behind schedule. I could be wrong, of course, as there is the potential for variability in all natural creatures.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-at-nest-2-8-15-3-00pm-to-5-30pm-td7573979.html","images":0},{"id":"7572826","topic":"7572826","order":1,"title":"Another Promising Breeding Season (Observation 11/11/12)","author":"Phil1","date":"2012-11-11T14:19:51.993000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"Found eagle sitting at the nest today between 12:35 and 12:50 p.m. (see attached). Here the Female in the nest... In the area is also possible to find wood storks.. as well as Hawks... and a family of Ospreys...here the female on an antenna in the grounds of the elementary school The area offers protection and food such as fish, rabbits, squirrels, waterfowl to the Eagles, fish to the Ospreys and small rodents and snakes to the hawks and merlin falcons... But is not paradise for the birds (and dogs and cats and horses, etc) when people celebrates New Year's eve with fireworks right in front of the home of the birds... After what I suppose was a rough night for the Miramar Eagles (I watched the new nest cam for Ron and Rita, a couple of eagles in Miami Dade (Wildlife rescue of Dade county)...The nest is in a very populated area...but it was horrible to watch.. the Eagles totally stressed out, fighting an invisible foe, trying to protect their 3 eggs, all because of the explosions of fireworks..) Life continues for the Eagles...They have adapted well to the suburban life...
