The world's fastest bird, peregrines had dwindled to 324 pairs in 1975 due to the widespread use of harmful pesticides. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Wednesday approved the delisting of the peregrine, calling the combined efforts of wildlife managers and individual to save the species as \"one of the best examples of wise conservation practices.\" The agency will be implementing a management plan to continue to protect peregrines, which was delisted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from its endangered list in 1999 but continues to be protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The Commission will also decide in September whether to allow peregrines for falconry. By Nick Sortal, SouthFlorida.com 4:09 PM EST, December 23, 2014 The bald eagles have returned to Deerfield Beach, and a tour on Saturday makes it easier to get a good look at them. Two bald eagles first appeared at Quiet Waters Park last year, and park staff was concerned too much disturbance would scare them off. But they migrated back this fall, and are settled to the point that a controlled viewing is possible. \"That way we know they're safe,\" said Katherine Hendrickson, the park's naturalist. \"We know they're popular but we want them to keep coming back.\" The park bought several high-resolution binoculars and a telescope for visitors, who walk about a mile on a dirt path with a naturalist. \"You're across the lake from them but with the telescope and the binoculars, it's easy to see them with a nice clear view and they're not bothered,\" she said. Last year, park staffers roped off the area 330 feet away from the nest on one side and 450 feet on the other and police shooed away drivers who stopped along Florida's Turnpike to get a view of the birds from the west. The eagles have at least one egg in a nest, she said. \"We've seem them flying in with larger sticks,\" she said. \"They're in a cypress tree, with not much room to grow, but the nest is bigger than last year.\" The eagles settled at Quiet Waters Park because of the open land, which makes hunting prey easier, Hendrickson said. Hurricane Wilma flattened many of the trees back in 2005. The only other bald eagles in Broward County are in Pembroke Pines. Palm Beach County has about a dozen. Although the bald eagle has been removed from the endangered species list, it retains strong state and federal legal protections. Under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, anyone who harasses or harms a bald eagle could face a fine of up to $5,000 and up to one year in prison for a misdemeanor, and up to $250,000 and two years in prison for a felony. Americans naturally have an interest in bald eagles, Hendrickson said. \"I think it's just that symbol of what the country has gone through and they're just so powerful,\" she said. \"Just to see them perched up there is quite majestic. \"They're not just another bird. We grew up with them, they're on top of the flag and it's ingrained in us.\" The tours are at 8 a.m. Saturday Dec. 27, and Jan. 3, 17, 31. The next one will be in March. Tours can accommodate up to 15 at a time at Quiet Waters Park, [specific street address withheld], Deerfield Beach. Cost is $3. Bird-watching tours are also offered at Tall Cypress Natural Area, [specific street address withheld]., Coral Springs and Deerfield Island Park, 1720 Deerfield Island Park, Deerfield Beach. Patrons can sign up by Webtrac.broward.org ; Nest Tours and search for \"bald eagle.\" Call [phone withheld]. Has anyone actually see 2 eaglets lately? Because, this one seems pretty big - and I would think that the other one would be visible by now. But, there was no sign at all of a 2nd eaglet. No activity at all either at the nest or in the malaleucas. I even went over to the lake in front of Chapel Trail where the vultures hang out to see if I could have mistaken what we saw for one of them. It's possible since I am pretty new to this but, especially after watching those vultures for awhile, I still think what we saw was the eaglet. The vultures are darker & don't seem to fly as fast as the eagles. It was about 6:30pm the other day when we saw it so the lighting was still very good. I had gone back over to the nest from the malaleuca area & the eaglet flew over my head (maybe 50 ft. up) going towards the malaleucas. He/she was between me & the sun so I couldn't get a good picture. The other gentleman was already in front of the malaleucas & he got a perfectly-framed, wingtip to wingtip picture of the bird above him. He was concerned that he might not have been perfectly focused but it looked very good to me when he showed it to me on his camera. Hopefully, he will post it soon so we can be sure. I scrutinized the surrounding trees from several perspectives and saw no sign of the eaglet or other adult. The March 29th sighting was never confirmed by photos, and photos were not forthcoming. Even a bad shot could confirm the identity of the eaglet. It was described as flying over the nest and with the sun behind it. There have been many vultures flying around the nest and under the poor lighting conditions as described it would be reassuring if we had evidence that the bird was correctly identified. Please post any photos of the eaglet, no matter what the quality so that we can be sure. Here are my two \"best\" shots of the male at the nest. Just be sure that the URL ends in \".jpg\" Generally, the \"Large\" size option works fine, as it resizes the image to fit the screen. Also let the image \"float\" inside any text you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere in your message. The adult eagles have become quite accustomed to human presence over the past 8 years that we have been observing the nest. Yet they do pay close attention when you approach the nest or their roost. They may not fly away, but they are in a heightened state of alert. The sidewalk was put in a couple of years ago to provide safe passage for pedestrians who commonly walked along the shoulder of the road. It was constructed during the non-breeding season and is now considered to be an \"existing disturbance\" that is technically not subject to the 330 foot restriction in the FWC guidelines. The roadway itself is such an \"existing disturbance.\" The fence was constructed at the request of the eagle watchers and was donated after several photographers and members of the general public walked up to the nest tree during breeding season. The parking restrictions on the south side of the road were instituted for the safety of observers (including small children and pets) who crowded along the shoulder and created a grave safety hazard. FDOT considered construction of a viewing area or platform but highway engineering principles require ample crash avoidance clearance along the sides of the highway, so this was not possible. Complaints to the City about observers crowding along the fence in front of the nest led to complete prohibition of pedestrians on the south side of the street during breeding season. While I do feel that a noisy crowd would constitute an \"unusual\" disturbance that should be prohibited, the complete exclusion of pedestrians seems not necessary. However, the City has put up the signs and has the police power to enforce the restriction, so I urge all to comply. We formerly viewed from the shoulder on the south side but this is now also prohibited. If watchers violate the restrictions and then cause other observers to call the City or the Police Department I fear that even the compliant nest watchers may be regarded as an unnecessary nuisance. The City could extend parking restrictions all the way down to the Post Office parking lot at 210th Avenue which would constitute a major inconvenience. In sum, I recommend that eagle watchers not view from the sidewalk, but I urge others to use restraint when it comes to annoying the City or Police department by complaining. A polite reminder might be in order if people are creating a disturbance. Anyway, the viewing is actually better from the median than from sidewalk because of the width of the nest. The eaglets will be branching and helicoptering this week and we certainly do not want one of them to be startled and fall before ready for flight.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Proper-and-safe-place-to-view-the-nest-from-td7573420.html","images":0},{"id":"7573422","topic":"7573420","order":3,"title":"Re: Proper and safe place to view the nest from","author":"photogeek72","date":"2014-03-13T15:35:27.763000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Thank you very much for your thorough explanation Ken. I don't even park on the south side of the street anymore (over at that asphault area by the red light). I park over on a grassy area on the north side where the turn lane is into that housing area. (I know, probably illegal to park there but there are no signs and I am never far from my car.) Last week when I was there, a woman and a child on a bicycle went by. They were on that little sidewalk / pathway right in front of the fence. They stopped at the approximate place the nest was, but then quickly went on their way. People know the nest is there, but I have never seen anyone harass or climb or in any other way annoy the eagles. But, I only go maybe once a week or less. A noisy and unruly group of observers at that site could disturb the eaglets. This is a delicate time for them as they will start climbing out on branches and likely take their first flights during the coming week. Any action that might startle them and cause them to leave the nest prematurely, if it constitutes an \"unusual\" disturbance could be subject to Federal prosecution and fines if it could be proved that an eagle is killed or injured as a result. As Kelly and I were telling them that the birds weren't there the boy asked, isn't that big bird in the tree an eagle? We told him it was just the grackles but in the little light left we spotted a large shape in the tall pine to the left of the nest...the favorite perch of the adults. When I checked with the binoculars it was one of the offspring! It was strange...almost like a changing of the guard as the \"kid\" looked out over the area just like the adult had in the past. This was the second of the siblings that snuck in on us as the other bird began flying circles around the woods over the nest. It took about 3 tries for it to get in the nest as its sibling watched from the pine calling very loudly. The young eagle in the pine was being attacked by 3 grackles, just as the adults were lately when perching there. Unlike the adults, the kid held his ground and after a while the grackles flew off and gave up. I'm sure it was Hope...as the white on her chest was very visible with the setting sun shining on it. She was still sitting there as I drove off in darkness. I took lots of pictures and hope some came out and maybe I can get them on here to share. The only other noteworthy event was when some VERY loud motorcycles came roaring by from the west making loud, almost popping sounds. Hope was quite upset and turned sideways towards the sound and let out the loudest, sharpest calls I have ever heard an eagle make. The sound pierced the night air and were audible over the roar of the motorcycles. She settled back down as soon as they passed. I thought for sure she would fly between the grackle attack and the loud noise but she remained on the branch. I wondered if she stayed there for the night or went to the nest? This morning I arrived at 7:30 to find Tom, who had been there for a while before me. We did not spot any eagles during our visits. We stayed in the area until around 9:15am and checked all the favorite perches before we left. There were some Kildeer and Black-necked Stilts in the cattle field across from the maleleucas. They stayed far back from the fence so photos were from quite far away. After we left the eagle woods we went to Sheridan and were joined by Umberto to look for the Sandhill Crane family (unsuccessful) but did find a pair of co-operative Cardinals along the boardwalk at the nature preserve. It is very sad that we cannot count on finding the eagles to observe lately...and I know we all miss that very much, but it is definitely spirit lifting to be finding lots of other species to enjoy. Luis was already there and had been watching for over an hour. He said one eagle was roosting at the corner of Pines & 208th but before he got out of his car it flew to the ground and appeared to pick up a medium sized item, maybe prey such as a small rabbit and then flew off. When he got to the nest an adult was deep down and he only saw the top of its head until a few minutes before I arrived. It was the female (Jewel) as evidence by her larger round head, more massive beak and the deep gape of her bill which extended well under her eye (more than halfway). She then moved up higher in the nest, quite close to the tree trunk and the near rim. This was unusual as the occupant of the nest was usually out of sight, incubating. For about 20 minutes until I had to leave she remained high up with her wings partially opened. We thought this may be a possible sign that one or more eggs had hatched and she was \"tenting\" to cover both eggs and young. However we saw no sign of tending or feeding which might indicate the presence of eaglets. About a half hour after I departed, Luis called me from the nest area to say that he saw quite definite signs that the female was feeding an eaglet. Head repeatedly up and down to a single point in the nest. He did not see any food in the adult's mouth but said he would check his photos to be sure.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/March-14-Female-tenting-and-possibly-feeding-eaglet-td7575514.html","images":3},{"id":"7573123","topic":"7573123","order":1,"title":"October 16 at 10:15am adult at the nest.","author":"MyEagle13","date":"2013-10-16T19:16:54.209000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Thins morning when i was passing by pines blvd in fron of the nest i saw an adult at the nest, i could see it fast but i could not stop, i was able to see it at the nest the adult could only see one i don't know if the other adult was in the area but it was not on the dead pines or close to any other tree that i could see but for sure this adult was doing nest restoration thouth.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/October-16-at-10-15am-adult-at-the-nest-td7573123.html","images":0},{"id":"7573243","topic":"7573243","order":1,"title":"Incubation Dec. 5 ,2013 07:45","author":"Al Griffin","date":"2013-12-05T10:32:16.717000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Mark the calendar, found the female low in the nest , with just her head visible. Then it flew out to the west above the road and circled several times over the Post Office area, soon returning to roost in the same spot. Then, when I was just getting back in the car to leave, it took flight and was quickly joined by the other eaglet. They soared together high above the nest, I noticed something odd-- one of the second eaglet's legs appeared to be dragging out behind her. This brings to mind something that one of the ground observers said several weeks ago. I can contact them next year but please sent me an Email to be sure I get on it as soon as possible as I don't always follow this link.
