By that time, hopefully, the eagles (if they do nest at that location) should have eaglet(s) in the nest and are far less likely to abandon them. Disturbances during nest site selection and building and egg-laying, as well as later when the eaglets may be branching but not capable of sustained flight are more likely to discourage breeding or startle the eaglets and cause them to fall. Still very unfortunate, but under the new and reduced reduced legal protections ( as I understand them) there is no penalty unless the disturbance is near the nest and/or results in a \"taking\"of an eagle (injury, death or abandonment). A Federal (FWS) permit for such activity would probably not be required because the \"taking\" would not be the purpose of the activity. (**This latter qualification is a loophole which now applies even for species still covered under the Endangered Species Act**). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife removed the bald eagle from the federal endangered and threatened species list in 2007. A non-regulatory conservation plan, the Species Action Plan outlines actions necessary to continue to maintain a stable or increasing population of bald eagles in Florida. This recommendation also applies to the use of fireworks classified by the Federal Department of Transportation as Class B explosives, which includes the larger fireworks that are intended for licensed public display. The other thing I was thinking about is that the tree they are using this year is usually used for cormorants and other water birds to nest as they have been for years. This will might also lead to the taking of more water birds for food. I think we can launch a canoe from the outside of the fair grounds, I'm going to check with the park office for the rules about that lake. They do have canoe rentals behind the doggie waters park for $10.00 for 1 hour, $15.00 for 2 hours, and $25.00 for 4 hours, and a $15.00 refundable deposit. They also have paddle boats and other water craft for rent, Hours are on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10:00am. Please don't try to land on the island as there is still a limit on approaching the nest of 330', we don't want to disturb them in their new location. I know most of you know this already, I just wanted to state it just so it has been said. There was an exception in the other location because of the bike trail, but I don't think it applies here. I hope they have a good year as the last two have only produced a single chick for each year, maybe it was stress or just natural I'm not sure and definitely not an expert. I have sent this note to Park staff: Some of the observers suspect that the Bald Eagles are now in process of nesting on an island in the lake, which I presume is within or near the Quiet Waters Park boundaries. They have not confirmed the existence or location of the nest. In the event that the eagles do nest in such a location, there are concerns about the loud noise of a cannon or fireworks which might be discharged during festivities at the Park during breeding season. In such case, the Federal (FWS) guidelines may place some obligations which relate to disturbance under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Of course, they may not breed there at all, but in the event that they do, here is a link to the discussion in the Bald Eagle FORUM. It references specific protections related to noise disturbance during the breeding season. http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/Renaissance-Festival-at-Quiet-Waters-Park-td7575415.html Mike30 wrote (November 13, 2019): Just left the dog waterpark and you get a great view of that island from the picnic tables near the entrance to the park and saw both eagles perched up on a branch. As 2019 comes to a close, I have much to be grateful for, and one of those things is the privilege of working alongside all of you in the EagleWatch program. We had about 250 volunteers attend training in the fall and about half have come on board and are now monitoring and reporting on nests. To all of the new volunteers who have joined us this season, welcome to the family! I hope you are finding the experience to be fun and rewarding. Remember that we have a closed Facebook group for active volunteers, Audubon EagleWatch, that you may join to ask questions or share photos. To all of the returning volunteers, your dedication never fails to encourage and inspire me. Keep up the great work! To date, you all have visited, attempted to find or are monitoring 750 nests, submitting 4600 nest observations! Whew! The database has been humming. Many of our pairs are on eggs now, and the early nesters already have eaglets! If your nest doesn’t appear active yet, please don’t give up. The incubation phase is notorious for deceiving volunteers into thinking the nest is abandoned. We’ve had pairs lay eggs as late as April, so there is still a good chance your nest may be active later. That’s why it’s so important that you keep visiting your nest AND entering your observations for the remainder of the season to document the true status of your nest. I am currently running year-end reports for nests that don’t have any observations in the database yet, or volunteers who were active last season but haven’t submitted observations yet this year. So I may be reaching out to you in the next few weeks if one of those categories applies to you. I completely understand that “life happens” sometimes. If your availability to monitor has changed, please don’t feel bad, but do let me know so we can make sure your nest is covered for the rest of the season. Likewise, if you have moved or have new contact information, please let me know so I can update your volunteer record. Submitting your monitoring data is one of the main requirements for EagleWatch volunteers. If you are visiting your nest but haven’t been reporting yet, please do take time to submit your observations to the database in the next week or two. Reports of “no activity seen” are just as important, so please do consistently enter those comments for your nest. It confirms that the nest is being monitored and is truly inactive as opposed to “unknown due to lack of monitoring”. Above all, having current observations in the database is valuable when I’m contacted by developers, cell tower or power companies, or state or federal wildlife agencies seeking updates on your nests to help guide management decisions. So thank you for regularly entering your observations in a timely manner. The pace in my office has been pretty relentless this fall. As a result, I have not been able to stay on top of reading nest observations as much as I’d like to. If you have something time sensitive going on at your nest, please email or call right away to let me know so I can help in a timely manner. For those who live in counties with a volunteer county coordinator, they are a great resource for you as they are more familiar with your area and can offer expert guidance, so don’t hesitate to contact them first. If you are on this mailing list but are not an active volunteer and would like to be, it’s not too late. Let me know and I can send you the training information to get started. We still have nests that need help in several counties. If you are a new volunteer but are not yet signed up to use the database, email me and I can send you that information to begin reporting. If you are a returning volunteer and are having trouble accessing the database, I’m here for tech support, so don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Often the issue is a simple fix! Thank you again for all you do, for making my job so much fun, for caring about wildlife and wild places, for sacrificing your time and effort to visit nests and educate others about the wonders of Bald Eagles. I’m excited to see what 2020 brings. Here’s to another successful nesting season for our pairs, and to a blessed and peaceful new year to you and yours. It is not uncommon for the female to spend some time on the nest for several days before laying the first egg, but once that egg is laid she usually will not budge from the nest until the male relieves her of incubation duties. She may get up and rearrange the nest/eggs and sometimes take a very brief absence, but in our experience so far the best indication that an egg has been deposited is her continuous deep position in the nest-- often only the top of her head is barely visible or the nest may appear to be empty unless watched for 20-30 minutes at a time. Please, everyone, keep a close eye on the nest as this is one of the precarious times in their breeding cycle, when they are more sensitive to disturbance just before and around when the eggs are laid. Looking forward to returning to Florida and joining the nest watchers soon. When I arrived, I immediately heard the calls of two adult eagles. One seemed to be from the nest tree and the other was from somewhat higher and beyond. I found the female (Jewel) roosting alone, rather high above the nest, which appeared to be empty. I thought that maybe a prey drop had occurred and was the cause of the calling. Jewel suddenly flew out to the east behind the trees. Then I saw the top of the male's head just above the nest rim. He never got up any higher during my whole period of observation. If a food drop had happened, the adult on the nest usually becomes occupied with tearing the prey and feeding, but no such activity occurred. I assumed that Jewel had flown away, but at about 9:30 I heard calling from rather deep in the trees to the east of the nest. Pride did not respond and I looked for the source. An adult flew up and disappeared to the east. About ten minutes later I saw Jewel roosting on the tall pine on the SW corner of Pines & 208th. She remained there until I departed a little after 10:00 AM. All this time, Pride remained deep in the nest. Saturday February 8 was the fifth week after ground observers first noted that the adults were sitting high as if \"tenting\" an eaglet. There were wind storms on January 10 about a week afterwards. There appeared to be some damage to the right side of the nest and the parents were adding and moving nest materials as if possibly restoring part of the structure. This activity raised the wall on the north side of the nest, making it difficult to see the contents. Feeding of one or more eaglets was suspected by some observers on January 25, but no eaglets were seen. They usually stick up their heads by the time they are 2-3 weeks old. I am concerned about the status of the eagles. Is it possible that the pair now has a second clutch of eggs because of loss of the first brood? Please keep an eye out for the eaglets.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FEB-8-No-reported-sightings-of-eaglets-at-PP-nest-td7575496.html","images":5},{"id":"4934169","topic":"4934169","order":1,"title":"Tuesday 4/20/10","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2010-04-20T18:56:00.780000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Got to hang around for about an hour 1:15-2:15 today. It took well over an hour to emplace a net near the ground below the nest, position climbing ropes and equipment, and then make the climb. Lott had to circle around the nest, removing several small branches on the way, to locate the most advantageous point to reach the eaglets. He then patiently calmed using towels to help stabilize their movement and safely capture them. Once captured, Lott slowly lowered them to ground in a large canvas bag. Lott works with the Audubon Society’s Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, Fla.Federal, State and non-governmental agencies worked together to successfully remove two six-week old bald eaglets Thursday from a nest near two Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation Project sites in Palm Beach County. Relocating the eaglets allows the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to maintain construction momentum and complete priority work in the southeast section of the dike prior to hurricane season. Corps’ contractors are filling a quarry at one site, and installing a partial cutoff wall from the dike crest to about 70 feet below at the second site. Both projects are critical to stopping and preventing excess seepage and erosion that lead can to dike failure. The two eaglets, weighing over six pounds each, were safely removed from a nest located four miles south of Pahokee. Working with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service officials, the Corps contracted the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey (ACBOP) to conduct the relocation and care for the eaglets until a suitable foster nest is found. Audubon specialists routinely foster eagles and other orphaned birds of prey into foster nests with great success. Two hundred eagle nests are now in the organization’s EagleWatch program. “It was a bitter-sweet event, but we’re extremely pleased the eaglets were safely removed and are in Audubon’s care. At this point in our rehabilitation process, continuing to make progress on this high-priority stretch requires work in the vicinity of the nest,” said Col. Al Pantano, the Corps’ Jacksonville District commander. The Corps is rehabilitating the dike’s most vulnerable section of the dike – the 22-mile southeast stretch between Port Mayaca and Belle Glade. Pantano said the Corps worked with FWS experts to develop a good plan, including establishing a 660-foot buffer zone around the nest several months ago to help protect the birds and the tree. “After many discussions, relocating the eaglets was the best compromise to save the eaglets and continue construction that’s critical to the safety of south Florida residents. As we take actions to reduce risk to public safety, we recognize that other interests may be affected. We try very hard to reduce these affects,” Pantano said. The Corps’ goal is to complete the quarry fill prior to hurricane season, and delaying work until the eaglets fledged would have required work at both sites stop for two months. The cost of putting two contractors on standby for two months equates to about $2.5 million. The Corps always strives to use public funds as responsibly and efficiently as possible. The rehabilitation team was aware of the nest’s presence and the potential risk associated with the eagles using the nest during construction. According to FWS specialists, eagle-breeding season runs from October through May – so there isn’t a ‘good’ time to perform long-term work that must be done. “This solution is considered the best alternative under the circumstances for the eaglets’ safety, as well as for human health and safety concerns. In order to get the job done before the 2010 hurricane season starts, the Corps needs to continue vital work on the Herbert Hoover Dike project,” said Paul Souza, the FWS's South Florida field supervisor. “There are always risks associated with removing eaglets from the nests and fostering them into adoptive nests. However, the Service has confidence in and considers Audubon to be the best qualified eagle rehabilitators in this situation to make the most appropriate decisions in the best interest of the survival of these eaglets.” Souza added that Audubon routinely fosters eagles and other orphaned birds of prey into foster nests with great success. The Corps began working with its construction contractors in early October to gather information for a FWS eagle disturbance permit, should the need for one arise. In early December 2009, the eagles laid two eggs. The Corps provided a permit application to the FWS later that month. After two eaglets hatched in mid-January, the Corps and FWS began to develop a plan to protect both the eaglets. Though eagles are no longer covered by the Endangered Species Act, they remain protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the state bald eagle rule. The Corps will continue monitoring the nest and adult pair until all dike construction in the area is finished. Contractors on the work site will also take measures to protect the nest tree for future nesting activities. Project engineers anticipate the contractors will complete construction in the area prior to another nesting. Following the eaglets removal, they were examined by Center for Birds of Prey staff. The eaglets were weighed and Center staff determined that the older eaglet (by two or three days) is the male and weighs just over six pounds. His younger sister weighs almost 7.5 pounds, according to Audubon staff. They are eating well and will be cared for at the Center in Maitland until foster nests are located. The eaglets will remain at the Center until two separate active nests with chicks of comparable size can be found to foster them. Audubon officials say EagleWatch volunteers will monitor the nests for four hours each day for the first three days until it has been determined that the eaglets have been accepted by the new parents. Ongoing monitoring will be conducted to detail the behavior of both adult eagles and eaglets.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/AGENCIES-WORK-TOGETHER-TO-RELOCATE-FOSTER-BALD-EAGLETS-td4647471.html","images":0},{"id":"4667851","topic":"4647471","order":2,"title":"Re: AGENCIES WORK TOGETHER TO RELOCATE, FOSTER BALD EAGLETS","author":"Trisha","date":"2010-03-03T09:37:44.569000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"There also was an article on this relocation in the Sun Sentinel. Yes, it's safer (and less stressful for the eagles), but it's much more difficult to get a good picture from across the street with the gear that I have, so I'm going to have to beg my wife for a longer lens this coming Father's Day! I was even more excited to see that the three of them are still doing well! Well, my observation began at 11:10am and I arrived to see the male eagle feeding all three eaglets a whole lot of some unknown prey. I can't tell you whether it was cached in the nest or if the male eagle brought it to the nest because I arrived during the feeding. All three eaglets ate their respective shares and moved around the edges of the nest very comfortably. There was one point where the largest eaglet stood so close to the eastern edge of the nest that I felt it was going to fall out. I guess that fact, combined with a lot of wing flapping, just shows that it's gaining confidence. I will add that it was also doing some preening while standing on the edge of the nest. The male eagle fed the chicks from 11:10am to 11:19am, at which time he flew from the nest towards the melaleuca trees. He roosted on the melaleucas for the remainder of my observation. After leaving the eaglets alone, they moved around the nest a lot. Towards the end of my observation, they settled into the nest and all I could see was the tops of their heads. I guess they took a siesta after that huge meal! Here's a heavily cropped image taken from across the street showing the male eagle feeding the three eaglets:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Saturday-February-27-2010-11-10am-to-11-40am-td4647485.html","images":1},{"id":"4647577","topic":"4647485","order":2,"title":"Re: Saturday, February 27, 2010 - 11:10am to 11:40am","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-02-27T21:08:35.772000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Very nice narrative and illustration, Victor! Am contacting a neighbor who told us last night that she saw only one on the nest yesterday afternoon, but will try to determine how good a view she had. Please try to stop by the nest and maybe see Glory's first free flight. Look and listen for Honor-- clues as to her position could be an adult shadowing her or calling. Also, the Blue Jays and mockingbirds like to harass the eaglets once they are out on their own, so listen for mobs of jays. The one on the nest remained there for at least 30 minutes. I got into a conversation with a gentleman on a bike and missed seeing the one on the nest fly away. I found a great place to see the nest. My car was parked on the N. side of the road about 8' to the W of the school sign and I climbed to the top of the car and sat there. This way, I could (most of the time, depending how the wind was blowing) get a pretty good view with binocs and camera of the nest and the bird on it. Remember that, unlike many other bird species, incubation begins when the first egg is deposited, causing asynchronous hatching. Usually it will be the female that sits on the eggs the first day or so, but they may switch duties. In any event one bird will always be sitting deep on the nest after the first egg is laid. That observation has proven to be an accurate way to begin counting the incubation days for the past two nesting seasons. Observers saw this happen on December 13, 2008 and the first egg hatched January 17, 2009. Then the next season the female began sitting low on December 18, 2009 and the first egg hatched on January 22, 2010. Both hatched exactly 35 days after the observed onset of incubation. Great observations, Jill. Be careful on that car roof! The female adult Jewel was roosting in the usual spot in the tall Australian Pine on the corner of Pines & 208th. She was obviously wet and bedraggled. Feathers were in disarray with barbs detatched. She fluffed and pruned until her plumage was back in shape. Then she flew out to pick some fresh leaves from the top of a pine and returned briefly to deposit them on the nest. Jewel then flew out to the NW and within 15 minutes returned with a fish (I missed the shot). She fed the two eaglets. I only obtained a couple of views clearly showing both eaglets. The (presumed) female was on the nest and was standing up for several minutes. She appeared to be taking small bites out of a fish and also was reaching down into the nest as if possibly feeding the hatchling. The male was roosting in the Melaleucas. At 8:42 AM the male flew to the nest. The pair looked into the nest for some time. Unusually, the female did not take this opportunity to allow the male to brood/incubate. She remained low in the nest. It will be interesting to see if the male brings in most of the prey for the next few days. The male flew up to the favored roost in the Australian Pine just east of the nest, when we had to leave. I noticed that a string or line was streaming about 4-5 feet behind it. I was late with my camera and only captured sky and two partial images of the eagle in terrible light. I think it was the male (Pride), based on my impression of smaller size. This location is about 1 1/2 mile ESE of the Pembroke Pines nest and a common route used by the eagles on their way to the big (Lighthouse Island) lake in Sunset Lakes. Not sure whether this is cause for concern. The eagle may be carrying a small dark object to which the string is attached. Alternatively it could have been snagged by fishing tackle. Please keep an eye out for it. I have briefly visited the nest a couple of times this past week and always found it vacant with no eagles in sight.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JUNE-9-Adult-Pride-in-flight-with-line-trailing-behind-td7575308.html","images":2},{"id":"7575309","topic":"7575308","order":2,"title":"Re: Adult (Pride?) in flight with line trailing behind","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2019-06-11T10:19:45.785000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2018–2019","text":"This morning at just about sunrise, the same Bald Eagle flew over, following the same course and a bit farther away, except that this time I was out in the open. All were following the same general course, towards the southeast in the direction of the large (Lighthouse Island) lake in Sunset Lakes subdivision. My position is about 1 1/2 miles SE of the Pembroke Pines nest. On June 24, two eagles were seen rather separately but on the same course. However, two flew together on June 23 and I could not determine the age of either as they were too far away in poor light. All others, which I could see clearly, were adults with the exception of this morning, when a juvenile flew over rather close to the horizon. It is identified as a first year bird by its overall dark color with some white feathers in its axillary area (\"wing-pits\") and the underwing linings. This bird had very broad wings with bulging secondaries, meaning that it is has recently fledged and is expected to retain its longer juvenile feathers until it begins to molt after it is over one year old. My photos were poor but are included here \"for the record.\" ADDENDUM: Sightings have continued, following the same pattern, single adults seen just after sunrise, on June 27, 30 and July 2nd and 4th. On July 5th, two adults were encountered, the male at 6:50 AM and the larger female at 7:01 AM. Both were flying towards the large lake in Sunset Lakes subdivision. The male appeared to be carrying something in his talons. This was undoubtedly a male, judging by more compact size, presumed to be Pride from the Pembroke Pines Nest. He appeared to be carrying a small item in his talons: I only obtained photos of the female (Jewel) as she flew away from me, but it was definitely a larger bird with more imposing wing span and larger abdomen:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JUNE-14-JULY-5-Twelve-Bald-Eagle-sightings-in-west-Miramar-td7575313.html","images":5},{"id":"2737821","topic":"2737821","order":1,"title":"The nest Tue 4/28/09","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2009-04-28T20:14:35.776000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I stopped by around 6pm and both chicks were in the nest.
