The parent appeared to try to feed the smallest, but I could not confirm that it actually took the food. Obviously, it is getting some nutrition or it would not have survived so far, but even with the abundance of prey I think there is a probability of it being crowded out by its larger and more aggressive siblings. Last year, with only two eaglets, the oldest got her way, and when they exercised their wings, there was only room for one to do so at a time, with the younger (Hope) deferring to Justice. Both were on the nest and I thought they may be copulating. Before I got my camera out of the car the male (Pride) flew up to the supporting branch just to the right (west) of the nest. EDITED DEC 28: MaryLou had her binoculars on the eagles while I was going for my camera, so she actually had a better view of what was going on. She is sure that the female was sitting down deep and the male was next to her or on the nest rim flapping his wings but they were not in contact. This raises the question as to whether eggs might now be in the nest and we had witnessed an exchange of incubating duties. In the past we have noted that at the time of exchange the sitting adult may actually seem hostile to the mate as if reluctant to get off the nest. They may go through a kind of recognition behavior, calling and touching bills before they switch places on the nest. Sorry but I agree that I jumped to the wrong conclusion. This also could have been a courtship display. Only frequent observation of their behavior will help clarify the status of the nesting pair. Ken The female (Jewel) settled down into the nest, her tail and sometimes her head visible. Within one or two minutes the male flew out the back of the nest and disappeared behind the trees. He circled very high and a minute or so later was in clear sight for only a second or two before moving on to the south.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-23-Eagles-interacting-on-nest-td7574628.html","images":2},{"id":"7573065","topic":"7573065","order":1,"title":"Re: Finding other birds while watching the eagle nest","author":"tomsease","date":"2013-05-07T20:24:46-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I was looking through this group of pictures again. I’m really starting to enjoy finding other birds when the eagles aren’t around. Yesterday, my wife & I were riding our bikes north on SW 185th Way & I saw a bird I had never noticed before. From your pictures below, I think it might have been a swallow-tailed kite. Also when we were out riding on Sunday we saw a couple of fairly small, slender herons of some kind wading in the standing water in the open field between SW 145th Ave & I-75, just south of Pembroke Gardens Mall. They were both solid black on top & white underneath. I looked that one up on whatbird.com & I think it was a Black-crowned Night Heron. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera ready either of those times. I’m going to start carrying it with me all the time now. I also went over to the eagle’s nest both Saturday & Sunday mornings for a little while & I didn’t see or hear any of the eagles either time. I did see a mocking bird acting like a roadrunner running across the street but no eagles. Getting to know all these different kinds of birds is really interesting. Tom Sease From: [hidden email] Sent: Sunday, April 14, 2013 5:14 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Finding other birds while watching the eagle nest One of my projects has been keeping watch over a Bald Eagle nest in neighboring Pembroke Pines. Over five breeding seasons, since 2008, I have collected information about their breeding activities. Dozens of other nest watchers who have an interest in protecting their habitat and learning about the eagles' behavior contribute their ground observations to my Pembroke Pines Eagle Nest Watch FORUM , and I compile the data to obtain a broader picture of their breeding biology. Here is a spreadsheet and a table comparing milestone events in each breeding cycle. Watching an eagle at its nest can be like watching grass grow. Yet, sometimes subtle behavioral changes can signal important events, such as the laying of the first egg and its hatching. Although our attention may be focused on the eagle, we are not oblivious to other happenings. Once a hummingbird appeared at the nest and perched right in front of an eagle as it was incubating. It was so interesting to ponder the difference in size between these two extremes that I totally forgot that I had a camera! Another time, an Osprey angrily followed an eagle that was carrying a fish to the nest site. Undoubtedly, the eagle had stolen its meal. Rather than flying directly to the nest, the eagle circled and flew off out of sight, emerging a few minutes later with the fish but without the Osprey. However, I was lucky enough to capture some unexpected scenes. Most recently was an encounter between several Fish Crows and a Merlin, just one day after the single eaglet had fledged and disappeared. The crows were harassing one of the adult eagles as it was roosting near the nest. I interpreted this a a possible attempt to distract the eagle so that others of the flock could steal remains of prey that the adult had left in the nest to attract the missing youngster. The crows repeatedly dived down just over the eagle's head whenever the eagle was occupied with preening. The eagle seemed only mildly disturbed. Just after I photographed one of the crows there was a rush of wings from behind me. A Merlin was in full pursuit of the crow. I must apologize for the poor quality of my photos as the light was harsh and I did not have time to switch my shutter settings. The crow headed for the Merlin's favorite roosting place, but had to yield its perch under attack. The crow actually started out after the Merlin! The battle went on for several minutes, the crow intent on returning to the falcon's favored roost. Finally the crows relented and the Merlin settled down. A couple of days before, a Cattle Egret stole my attention as it chased after Halloween Pennant dragonflies. The egret stealthily crept up on an insect (Click on the image to see the location of its prey). Success! (Note that the egret has pinkish-orange breeding plumes). Other incidental sightings of note include this Swallow-tailed Kite that passed directly over the eagle nest. A pair of Red-shouldered Hawks courted on a tall light fixture nearby. A dark morph Short-tailed Hawk, ready to pounce upon any unsuspecting smaller bird disguised itself by soaring in a flock of vultures. A Sharp-shinned Hawk raced overhead. A flock of Cedar Waxwings once appeared against a rainy sky. A Palm Warbler visited as I watched the nest, up close and personal. Flocks of long-legged waders, such as these Wood Storks, flew overhead. A colony of Monk Parakeets occupied a nest on a light pole across the street from the nest. An oddity was this Northern Mockingbird with a badly deformed bill. It was singing vigorously as I took its picture. A Gray Squirrel tight-roped across in front of the eagle nest. Some of the sightings must be classified as \"un-natural.\" If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below: http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/Finding-other-birds-while-watching-the-eagle-nest-tp7573039.html To start a new topic under Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida, email [hidden email] To unsubscribe from Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida, click here . Concerned that photographers and others hoping to catch a glimpse of the birds will create traffic hazards, the city plans to put up signs and set out traffic cones along the side of Pines Boulevard to prevent people from blocking the busy street. The two eagles, which have occupied a nest about [specific street address withheld] for several years, have just had chicks hatch out. City officials want to avoid a repeat of events a few years ago, when people crowded the sides of the road, tried to climb a fence to reach the chicks and at least one photographer tried to climb their tree. \"My concern is that it becomes a traffic hazard,\" said Shawn Denton, the city's public service's director. \"I don't want people walking across the street and getting hit. I don't want cars on the south side of the street. And in doing that, we can also ensure the privacy of the eagles.\" The Florida Department of Transportation will replace No Stopping signs that had been removed after a car hit them. The city plans to put up signs warning against crossing to the south side of the street, where the nest is located. The eagle's nest sits in an Australian pine tree on city-owned land just east of U.S. 27. Denton said anyone attempting to climb the fence faces arrest for trespassing. Although the bald eagle has been removed from the endangered species list, it retains strong state and federal legal protections. Under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, anyone who harasses or harms a bald eagle could face a fine of up to $5,000 and up to one year in prison for a misdemeanor, and up to $250,000 and two years in prison for a felony. Thankfully, the melaleucas have grown up to partially obscure the nest, and additional signage and parking restrictions are in place in front of the nest. This, and our admonitions to media about the traffic hazards posed by the large number of observers last year, have kept the crowds down. The youngsters are branching and \"helicoptering\" in advance of that first fateful flight. This is a particularly hazardous time for them. If you visit, please try to determine the number of young in the nest, as we would like to keep track of when they fledge. Also, please be alert to any indication that an eaglet may be in danger. Anyone who visits the nest site may fill out an electronic observation report, which you can automatically send to the Middle School science students for their study of the relationship of traffic density to behavior of the eagles. The workers started on the area directly in front of the nest and used no mechanized equipment to restore the fence posts and install new fencing. After that they continued to the other poles and were still working when I departed at 9:30 AM. FPL has been very attentive to the FWC protection laws and regulations, having finished the major work of installing the new poles before October 1st, the official start of the nesting season. The old poles were sawed off above the bottom two wires, which are communication lines. These two lines must be removed from the old poles and attached to the new ones by the communication providers (perhaps Comcast and AT&T). While the female was in the nest tending to the eaglet...with a really non stop peal call... The vocalization was loud and clear...it showed some distress on the female eagle...the internet agrees this particular type of peal call is an order to the partner and means \"Bring food...\" and continued for hours However that urgent peal call seemed not to have any effect whatsoever on the eagle that was nearby sunbathing! On Feb 20th same drama continued...The Eagle in the nest (this time the eaglet showed) peal calling... ...and the Eagle by the canal ignoring the call... However, on closer inspection, the Eagle in the picture above is NOT the partner of the Eagle in the nest!! This eagle still has some dark feathers in the head and looks small!! Who is this guy?!! And to confirm the observation, from the west the real guy arrives! .. The female eagle goes from the nest to the top of the tree to greet her partner and to tell him that another male Eagle is near by! Both then vocalize and let the visitor know that is not tolerated! The young Eagle leaves... And some calm is restored in the bushes... For us humans there are more question than answers! Three theories: 1- The Young eagle is in fact a child of this couple...was born in this patch of bushes and it is known that eagles come back to their place of birth...he just wanted to say Hi Mom, Hi Dad, look at me! I am and Adult now!...The couple, brooding another eaglet let him know is not tolerated but did not attack him! 2- The Young Eagle, having reach adulthood, is looking for a partner. It is known youngsters lurk in the territory of established couples and eventually dispute the territory with their same sex counterpart...Is this youngster a suitor for the female eagle? Is he bidding his time? 3- The young Eagle is scouting the territory and prospecting the terrain to get himself a girlfriend and a nest... In the process caused some domestic disturbance for the Miramar Eagles, but is just a passer by!! What do you think? Will keep you posted of any new development...","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Suitor-Lost-Son-Passer-By-Soap-Opera-Drama-td7576473.html","images":11},{"id":"7576474","topic":"7576473","order":2,"title":"Re: Suitor? Federal Judge Rules Administration’s Bird-Killing Policy is Illegal. Judge Caproni’s response to this opinion is clear: “There is nothing in the text of the MBTA that suggests that in order to fall within its prohibition, activity must be directed specifically at birds. Nor does the statute prohibit only intentionally killing migratory birds. And it certainly does not say that only “some” kills are prohibited.” Great news for birds! In 2018, Audubon, several other conservation groups, and eight states filed lawsuits challenging the U.S. Department of the Interior’s elimination of longstanding bird protections under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). Yesterday, a federal court threw out the administration's rollback of the MBTA, ruling the policy is contrary to the foundational 100-year-old bird protection law. This reality is underscored by the judge’s own words from the opening of the ruling: “It is not only a sin to kill a mockingbird, it is also a crime. That has been the letter of the law for the past century. But if the Department of the Interior has its way, many mockingbirds and other migratory birds that delight people and support ecosystems throughout the country will be killed without legal consequence.” We may have won National Audubon Society v. Department of the Interior, but the long fight isn’t over yet—Congress must pass the permanent legislative fix to protect the MBTA from being weakened through administrative and regulatory changes. Take action today by asking your U.S. Representative to defend the MBTA from further rollback attempts by passing the Migratory Bird Protection Act. This is the pasture that has a few cows and where the adult eagles have been seen collecting grass for the nest lining, and on at least one occasion, catching a Cattle Egret. The City Planning and Zoning Board will consider, on May 14th 2009, at 6:30, an application by Chapel Trail Associates that essentially changes the use of this property from industrial and community facility use to commercial use. This would not change the \"footprint\" of the development of the block, and is not anticipated to significantly impact traffic density. I believe that this change would not affect the eagles any differently. I do not know whether any multi-story structures may be planned. No matter how this plot is developed, it will permanently remove a foraging area that is of some importance to the eagles, and a source of nesting materials. Arguably, there are other similar areas within the eagles' territory. For example, there is a pasture of about the same size just west of Chapel Trail Nature Center, about one mile due north of the eagle nest site. It contains a few cattle and has grassland similar to the area that is slated for development by Chapel Trail Associates. I know of additional grasslands in the Harbor Lakes and GL Homes Environmentally Sensitive Lands in NW Miramar, about 1.5 miles southeast of the nest. There may be other such accessible grassland areas as well, especially along US-27. Cattle Egrets are not only found among cattle, as many may be seen along the edge of US-27 and other thoroughfares. Since part of the construction will take place within 660 feet of the nest, and will create an unusual disturbance that is greater than that already present at that distance, the contractor may elect to obtain an eagle permit from FWC. Alternatively, the contractor may voluntarily follow FWC Eagle Management Guidelines to minimize disturbance during the nesting season. We can be reassured that the City of Pembroke Pines is aware of the potential impact upon the eagles. Sharon Williams of the City Planning staff explained that this is a request \"to modify the development program for the entire chapel trail development which is known as a development of regional impact or a DRI. Essentially, there are certain development rights left in their program like so many square feet of industrial and so many of commercial, and community facilities. The residential component has already been built out so that is not changing. The developer is asking the city to approve a plan that reduces the remaining square feet of industrial and community facility and increases the commercial square feet so that it is a wash in terms of any increased impacts to traffic. They are going to use this square feet, if approved, to develop the vacant land next to the post office. \"...The staff report has a condition regarding activities near the eagles nest and we are recommending that they submit documentation from the FWC that either a permit is not required or to submit an approved permit...\" An excerpt from the staff report states: \"The applicant is aware that a permit from the State of Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) may be required prior to any construction activity due to the proximity of the subject parcel to the active Eagles Nest on the south side of Pines Boulevard on the Chambers property. Prior to the issuance of a building permit, the applicant will be required to submit documentation from the FWC that a FWC permit has been issued or a permit will not be required.\" The staff recommendation follows: \"Transmit to the City Commission with a favorable recommendation with a determination that the proposed change does not constitute a substantial deviation and that prior to the issuance of a building permit, the applicant will be required to submit documentation from the FWC that a FWC permit has been issued or will not be required.\" In sum, I believe that the impact of this project upon the Pembroke Pines eagles will be marginal. The positive response by the City and the School Board in following FWC guidance to protect the eagles' habitat outweighs the inevitable change in the urbanized landscape. This is only my opinion, and we should rely upon science and good data, rather than emotion, in evaluating this situation.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Development-of-the-pasture-east-of-Post-Office-td2751739.html","images":0},{"id":"2751791","topic":"2751739","order":2,"title":"Re: Staff report -- Development of the pasture east of Post Office","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2009-05-01T01:09:35.276000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Staff Report DATE: May 7, 2009 TO: Chairman and Members of the Planning and Zoning Board VIA: David H. Frank Administrative Services Director FROM: Sharon L. Williams Associate Planner Project: Chapel Trail Development of Regional Impact (DRI) Notice of Proposed Change (NOPC) Project No: PH 2008-07 Location: North side of Pines Boulevard, east of US 27 Applicant: Holland & Knight, LLP (Janna Lhota,Esq.) Project Summary: Chapel Trail Associates, Ltd., through their agent, Holland & Knight, LLP, is requesting approval of an application to modify the development order granted by Ordinance No. 843 for the Chapel Trail DRI, pursuant to Section 380.06, Florida Statutes, adopted by the City Commission on September 15, 1987, and as modified by Ordinance No’s 943 (adopted 11/28/90), 1009 (adopted 9/16/92), 1130 (adopted 8/2/95), 1332 (adopted 2/2/2000), 1418 (adopted 9/4/2002), 1462 (adopted 10/15/2003) and 1517 (adopted 6/8/2005). The DRI is a 1,850-acre mixed-use development generally[specific nest-location detail withheld], and between US [specific street address withheld]. The proposed change is to modify the DRI development program that would result in a simultaneous increase in commercial square feet (from 187,500 to 290,254) and decrease in industrial and community facility square feet (from 1,550,000 to 1,029,914 of industrial, from 224,200 to 189,816 of community facility). No changes in residential density or office uses are proposed. The DRI is currently approved for 187,500 square feet of retail, 100,000 square feet of office, 1,550,000 square feet of industrial, 224,200 square feet of community facilities, and 3,662 dwelling units. See table below for modified development plan proposed by the subject NOPC: The applicant has prepared a traffic analysis to determine PM Peak hour trip generation from the proposed change. According to the analysis, no increases in PM Peak hour trips will be generated by the proposed change. The proposed NOPC and revised traffic study were reviewed by the City’s Environmental Services Division, as well as by the State of Florida Departments of Transportation (DOT) and Community Affairs (DCA) with no objections and a finding that the proposed changes do not result in any increased regional impacts. The applicant is aware that a permit from the State of Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) may be required prior to any construction activity due to the proximity of the subject parcel to the active Eagles Nest on the south side of Pines Boulevard on the Chambers property. Prior to the issuance of a building permit, the applicant will be required to submit documentation from the FWC that a FWC permit has been issued or a permit will not be required. Staff Recommendation: Transmit to the City Commission with a favorable recommendation with a determination that the proposed change does not constitute a substantial deviation and that prior to the issuance of a building permit, the applicant will be required to submit documentation from the FWC that a FWC permit has been issued or will not be required. Hurricane Irma inflicted considerable damage to the trees around the nest but spared the nest tree. The Australian Pine adjacent to the left (east) appears to have been toppled or broken off at the base. The usual roost tree just along the road to the east has lost several major branches, including the one favored by the eagles as a resting place. The nest itself has lost about 1/3 of its bulk, on the right (east) side, and the nest it tilted down slightly in that direction, but I cannot say for sure whether this is any worse than the damage reported about 2-3 weeks before the hurricane. The major nest support branches are intact. The Melaleuca snags to the east which provided excellent viewing opportunities are almost all down-- only 3 or 4 remain at their original height, and only one of these seems substantial enough to offer support for roosting. No eagles were evident during my brief observation. I think the dead tree along the road near the end of the block where the eagles sometimes roosted has disappeared. Branches were broken off some of the live Melaleucas in front of the nest, probably affording a better view from the front, but obstructing the view from the right.. The next big event to be anticipated is when the eaglets start to \"helicopter\" in place above the nest and climb out on the branches. Consulting the summary of \"Major Milestone\" events in the table at THIS LINK reveals that, over the past 8 breeding seasons, branching/helicoptering of the first eaglet has occurred between 60 and 77 days of age. This means that P Piney 17 (awaiting a new name) could start this behavior as soon as 2-3 weeks from now. This will be a critical period during which eaglets are at increased risk of falling either because of a stray wind gust or a disturbance from any source, such as a loud noise or unusual human activity near the nest. I did not obtain a good photo of both eaglets because I was occupied by some drama to the east of the nest. The female (Jewel) was roosting on the top of a pine near the SW corner of Pines & SW 108th Avenue. A Northern Mockingbird began attacking her. We experienced a number of strong storm events in the spring that impacted nests, and a higher than usual occurrence of monitors reporting young eagles on the ground below their nest before they were ready to fly. Spending a day or two on the ground can be a normal part of the fledging process for many bird species, and the decision on whether the young eagle truly needs help or should be left alone is never easy to make. https://fl.audubon.org/sites/default/files/af-eaglewatch_web_september_13-2.pdf?","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Florida-Audubon-EagleWatch-Annual-Report-2020-2021-td7576320.html","images":0},{"id":"7576352","topic":"7576320","order":2,"title":"Re: Florida Audubon EagleWatch Annual Report 2020-2021","author":"Rockitglider","date":"2021-10-18T09:49:44.732000-04:00","nest":"","season":"2020–2021","text":"Thanks for the link Ken Kit Orcutt","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Florida-Audubon-EagleWatch-Annual-Report-2020-2021-td7576320.html","images":0},{"id":"7574804","topic":"7574804","order":1,"title":"NOV 18: Immature eagle flying south of nest","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2017-11-18T14:33:30.252000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2017–2018","text":"At 8:00 AM this morning I saw an immature Bald[specific nest-location detail withheld] extension from west to east over the wetlands from a point about 1 mile south and east of the PP nest. It had white \"armpit\" (axillary) patches and its flight feathers showed signs of molt from the juvenile to 2nd year plumage, causing a jagged appearance to the trailing edge of its wings. It is probably about one year old. Of course we do not know its origin but it could be one of last season's eaglets. Only 2 or 3 minutes later he flew up to roost on a flimsy branch atop a pine just east of the nest tree. He remained there the entire time I watched. In the meantime, Jewel just sat there on the nest rim until about 9:40 AM, when she started to tend and feed her brood. She tore food from prey to the right and then brought small pieces to at least two different locations to the center and to the left. Feeding continued until I departed at 10:00 AM. (That rounded object is a clump of pine needles, not the head of an eaglet!)
