They were doing some minor wing exercising and then the smaller one went down for a nap. At 2:30 one adult flew to the nest with a fish. It appeared as though the adult was eating more than the young. The larger of the eaglets stood high on the left rim of the nest, not interested in the snack. The other was partially concealed but not doing a lot of tearing and pulling. The adult was turned away from the road back on the left side and clearly doing most of the eating, away from the young. Perhaps the slim down for flight is occurring? The adult moved over to the tall pine left of the nest for its preening. It was there for about 1-1/2 hours and then flew off and did not return for the rest of my stay. There was always one of the young up high on the left side of the nest...they seemed to rotate from resting down in the nest to standing tall and watching. Around 4:45 pm they had a very active period of both young hopping and spreading their wings and getting a little elevation. I left at 5:30 and Jill was there so she can fill us in on the rest of the evening. I only saw the 1 adult during my stay.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/All-is-well-at-the-nest-at-5-30-pm-td2541476.html","images":0},{"id":"7393372","topic":"7393372","order":1,"title":"See an eagle do the breast stroke","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2012-03-21T16:00:16.677000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"This footage was taken at Mallard Lakes subdivision in Baton Rouge .. She was climbing out on the branches when I arrived at the nest about 9:00 AM. At 9:20 AM she flew down to join Glory on the nest. Although both eaglets are about the same size, the older is still distinguished by a greater amount of white on her breast. Five minutes later the male parent (Pride) arrived with an unidentified prey item. The eaglets started eating, but either finished it quickly or needed help butchering the prey. They then started calling and begging insistently. They are both visibly larger than the male parent, supporting our opinion that both eaglets are females. Glory was very demanding. Pride then took a perch just above and to the right of the nest Honor appears ready to take her first flight in any moment. I was a bit concerned that the wind was coming out of the northwest. Since they usually take off into the wind, the electrical wires may pose a hazard. I doubt this would have any adverse effect upon the eagles unless people are crowding up, moving about and making a lot of noise. However they should not be doing it because the City has posted signs prohibiting pedestrians on the walk. It is up to local authorities to enforce the restriction, so it is not a good idea to \"play cop\" unless you wish to point out the possible danger (especially to people) of practices such as parking in the roadway or along the restricted shoulder. It is a matter of personal judgment as to whether to call the police as they have a lot more important things to do. The City has been good about allowing observers to park on the north side and I would hate to see the parking and viewing restrictions expanded just because the City is getting lots of complaints. We could have been required to park as far away as the Post Office parking lot.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-MAR-30-Honor-is-branching-and-appears-ready-for-flight-td7573454.html","images":0},{"id":"7573461","topic":"7573454","order":5,"title":"Re: Sunday MAR 30 - Honor is branching and appears ready for flight","author":"MyEagle13","date":"2014-04-02T17:03:47.626000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"i undertand and i got your point we dont wanna do a lot of complains i just was saying because someone here coment about people coming from inside the nest or something i personally dont thing that for been on the sidewalk taking pictures would be a danger for our eagles they r use to se people around and not even the noise from the big traffic looks to bother them other wise they would't come back for some meny years, i was only concern because someone make coment about seen people coming from inside myself took pictures on the past on the side walk to joy and pride they dont even take a look at me jajaja.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sunday-MAR-30-Honor-is-branching-and-appears-ready-for-flight-td7573454.html","images":0},{"id":"7574539","topic":"7574539","order":1,"title":"Adult & eaglet at nest","author":"johnnye","date":"2016-06-21T18:05:27.791000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"Stopped at the nest at 12:30. Adult and eaglet were perched on separate small branches coming off the larger one on they have been using this season towards Pines Blvd. at the nest. The adult was just above the eaglet. Minor pruning but not much else until the eaglet started calling. She kept calling and calling and then starting moving around the nest with short \"floats\". Not sure what to call it. She seemed anxious, perhaps hungry. Finally she fluttered up and on top of the adult's back so the adult flew away and she perched where the adult had been. The adult flew to the pine tree next to the sidewalk next to Pines Blvd.where they often perch. After just a couple minutes the adult flew back the the pine next to the nest tree. The eaglet kept calling and complaining until finally she, the eagle, fluttered/flew over to the adult's tree. She did not seem steady when she landed and had her wings half out on the branch as if she was using them to steady and support herself. She was calling as if she was screaming for help. If was unsettling for me as I am not an expert and am not real familiar with behavior when eaglets are learning to fly. The adult hoped down to a branch so his talons were even with the eaglets head as if for comfort and support. The eaglet finally got steady on the branch and kept calling. The adult eventually flew away to the south and I wonder if not to find food. The eaglet seemed to slide/walk/hop to the inter part of the tree where it was less windy. It is pretty windy today which also caused concern as I don't know how long the eaglet has been trying to fly or maybe already has. From what I saw today, I wouldn't think she knew how to fly but I have been by the nest on other day and didn't see her. Maybe she just wasn't visible on those days. I left just after 1:00.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Adult-amp-eaglet-at-nest-td7574539.html","images":0},{"id":"7572814","topic":"7572814","order":1,"title":"Friday October 26 Johnnye J's report of 2 eagles possibly at nest site","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2012-10-26T21:47:42.975000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2012–2013","text":"On October 26 Johnnye J wrote: Well, I hope I did not speak too soon. I was driving by and the one closer to the road was an eagle. They were only a couple (sticks) trees apart and at almost the same level high. Would another large bird roost so close to an adult eagle if not another eagle? No one has seen the two of them together yet so I am questioning what I saw. I presume that the 2 birds were roosting peacefully next to each other on the Melaleuca snags just west of the nest site. If so, and they were large raptors it is very likely that they were the eagle pair. The eagles generally will not tolerate the presence of another raptor or even a vulture or crow in such close proximity in their territory. I didn't see any activity in the nest at all at first, but it was so windy that large branches were blowing in front of the nest and staying there so viewing was difficult. After about 15 minutes the adult left its perch and relocated to a branch just above and to the west of the nest. It stayed there and looked in all directions for about five minutes. It then peered directly down at the nest and dropped on to the east side of it. At that point the eaglet became active and raised a wing and then showed its head above the rim of the nest. Wow, it now has feathers. It has been a couple of weeks since I took any pictures of the eaglet and it is now looking a lot more like the adult. The adult moved to the west side of the nest and began to eat from what appeared to be a fish lying on the edge of the nest. The eaglet raised itself above the rim of the nest and then proceeded to work itself directly under the parent. A bunch of maneuvering by both the chick and the parent was necessary to find a stable arrangement as the wind was really moving the nest tree quite a bit from side to side. The adult fed the chick a number of times and then it looked like the chick ate directly from the fish lying in the nest. The adult was back above the nest, on the western side, when I left around 4 PM. I was finally able to focus on the nest at 12:38 and to my surprise, both adults were standing side by side on the nest. They looked down into the nest for a few seconds and then one flew away to the east. As soon as the other was alone on the nest, it began eating and continued to eat for over 10 minutes (obviously, the one that flew in brought lunch) then it stopped and hunkered down into the nest. After about three years their nest fell down and for the last thee or four years they have been breeding successfully in a native pine tree which in right in the middle of a residential school parking lot. The cars park right up to the tree trunk, and crowds often watch from very close by. Unfortunately, the tree started declining and by last fall it was nearly dead. Now it is completely dead. There are at least two eaglets which look to be about 3 weeks old. Dead pines have soft wood which rots quickly, and this tree will quickly become a hazard to those who park or walk near it. The tree probably starved because its roots were nearly entirely covered by the asphalt pavement. I do not think anything was done to speed its demise. I wonder what will happen if they continue to use the tree-- at some point it may need to be taken down. Interestingly, this was the first nest in Kane County since before DDT was banned, and the Pembroke Pines (Florida) nest near our permanent home was also the first in Broward County! We need to keep a close eye on feeding activity, as they definitely had one eaglet on JAN 17. Since it is likely there was more than a single egg, others would be expected to hatch over the following several days. My concern is: What happened to the first eaglet? It was on the ground in the middle of what looked to be a field of recently planted tomato plants. This field is approximately one-half mile east of the entrance gate to the park. It's white head stood out like a sore thumb, which is what caught my attention as I drove by. When it noticed that I knew it was there, it took off, flew in a big circle around the field and landed at the top of a pine tree at the opposite end of the field. During this entire encounter, I managed to capture many images of the eagle. It was not until I actually got home and viewed the images in detail that I noticed that not only was it tagged on both feet, but it also had a GPS tracking device mounted on its back with a solar panel and a protruding antenna. I had never seen this before, so I'm assuming it was probably a rehabilitated eagle that was put back into the wild, but was being tracked by the people that cared for it. Either way, here is a shot of the eagle on the ground and an inset with a close-up of the tracking device. I apologize, but the following pics are heavy crops of the original images captured by my camera, so they are not as clear as I would've liked for them to be. Unfortunately, the longest reaching lens I have right now is a 200mm with a 2x teleconverter, so this is not the ideal setup for birding. Here is a pic of the eagle taking flight towards the north end of the field. The tracking unit is clearly visible on its back. Also visible in this pic is the green tagging band on the eagle's left foot. Here is a pic of the eagle perched atop the pine tree on the eastern end of the field. I really wasn't paying as close attention as I usually do because I just stopped by for a quick check to see you and ask if you had seen either of the young. I guess we can both say we didn't see any young eagles....but with the winds and trying so hard to spot one of the young eagles I think we saw about everything else....wood storks, various ibis and herons, ospreys, vultures, hawks, etc. Carolyn also stopped buy to help look out for the fledglings. I did wind up staying longer than I had planned (don't we all), because, as you said, the 2 adults came in...a few minutes apart, I think. The first landed on the nest with a white bird and looked around.....especially to the south and west...and then ate. A chick was clearly vocalizing loudly in the nest vicinity when it landed. The other adult wound up in the nest briefly also and Jill said it had been perched above the nest and flew down. So both adults were on the nest together for a short time. When 1 adult flew west I tried to keep it in my sight as it went through the trees and landed in the dead stand. I heard the same vocalization of a young eagle that I had heard when the adults flew to the nest previously, but not as loud. With so much wind it was hard to tell if it was 1 or 2 chicks and where the sound was coming from...but definitely in the wooded area somewhat west and south of the nest tree. The second adult flew out a few minutes later and flew to the top of the dead tree right beside its mate. They both were facing south. Jill thought that the adult that left the nest first might have been carrying food down to the dead stand. A watcher there said he didn't see food but that the adult was cleaning what looked to be white stuff (feathers?) from its talons. I was unable to see if anything was dropped on the flight from the nest. If things remain status quo through tomorrow we might be able to get more info by having someone position themselves in the woods to try to get a better idea of the interaction between the young and parents...as if any feeding is going on out of the nest. Jill was telling me about a really interesting interaction yesterday between the small chick and an adult who came to the nest without food. I hope she will post the description as I'd like to know what it means in \"eagle speak.\" I hope soon the young will return to the nest. I have noticed that when the parents head to the nest it is with a lot of speed...maybe the chicks need a little more practice to get into such a \"branchy\" location. It might be harder to get in there than the bald eagle nests that I have seen on the internet that consist of fewer sticks placed on a large rock on top of a cliff. But who knows...maybe those fledglings might not agree! I'll be back at the nest tomorrow morning for my usual shift and hope to see the fledglings.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Watching-today-Monday-4-6-4-30-7-35-td2596396.html","images":0},{"id":"2596678","topic":"2596396","order":3,"title":"Re: Watching today (Monday 4-6, 4:30-7:35)","author":"Jill W","date":"2009-04-06T22:24:55.527000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Great report, Trisha! Then, there was a real physical squabble between the two, with some screaming by both for a few seconds before the adult flew away. Less than 10 minutes later, an adult flew to the nest with a big meal. I don't know if it was the same adult or not. Justice squealed and carried on as if he had not been fed in days. It seemed very strange since watchers reported that he had been fed a LOT that day, and eventually had lost interest in eating more. I have noticed some open land nearby, just south of Florida's Turnpike but am not familiar with the nature of the habitat. Otherwise there doesn't seem to be a likely nesting area within a couple of miles. If there is another nest it also should be hatching eaglets about now. If an eagle is seen carrying prey its direction of travel should be carefully noted, as they could be headed directly home. The new Miramar Pineland Park near Miramar Parkway & University is only 3.5 miles away and I thought some of its larger native slash pine trees would provide nest sites for eagles, but I am not aware of any reports of sightings there. While not impossible, it seems unlikely that the PP eagles would range so far in search of prey.
