I knew how to ID all the evergreens when I lived in New Mexico. This one does appear to be a native pine, unlike our Australian Pines. Older native pines tend to have strong lateral branches that often create a platform top rather than a central leader that ends in a peak, which is the case with the exotic Australian. Of course this means that relatively few Australian Pines have crotches that will support a heavy nest. (This is a concern with our local eagle nest-- if it comes down in a storm there may not be any suitable nest trees within their territory). The eaglet is probably between 1 and 2 weeks old. This is based merely upon the observations recorded at the Pembroke Pines nest over the past 3 seasons. The little fuzzy head appeared within a space of 7 - 18 days after hatching (mean 12.5, average 14 days). Of course there are many variables, including how often and for how long the nests were observed, visibility of the nest and width and height of the nest rim, not to mention the behavior of the chick.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagle-nest-in-Melbourne-FL-12-31-12-td7572876.html","images":0},{"id":"7572888","topic":"7572876","order":6,"title":"Re: Eagle nest in Melbourne, FL 12/31/12","author":"Jill W","date":"2013-01-07T09:34:26.685000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thanks, Ken. No observations were recorded for March 21, and the eaglet was never observed to be branching or helicoptering, something that usually happens during the week or so before fledging -- see the Milestone Chart here: http://www.rosyfinch.com/EagleMilestonesSheet.pdf I discussed the situation with Michelle Van Deventer, Florida FWC Bald Eagle Coordinator. She agrees with my feeling that the eaglet has died, based on the fact that their initial flights are usually of short duration and they tend to stay in the area of the nest and return to the nest to be fed. The absence of any calling and the failure of parents to bring food to the nest (to lure the chick back) also support this assumption. Mary Lou and I checked the nest this afternoon and found no eaglet or adults. We also scanned the big lake in Sunset Lakes, including the lighthouse where the adults have been seen in the past, but there was no sign of any eagles. We should research whether nesting failure is ever responsible for abandonment of an established nest in the following season. At first I wondered whether the \"dead\" eaglet may have been a third and even younger nestling, but what I now think happened was that this may have represented a defensive strategy which protected the weaker sibling from further attack. I have seen this kind of behavior in small birds when a hawk suddenly appears. Usually the birds scatter into protective shrubbery and remain perfectly still. If surprised out in the open they may \"freeze\" in place as long as the threat is present. As a kid I often helped my grandfather catch chickens which roamed in our adjacent yards. If I cornered one by extending my hands in front of it (almost like a hawk swooping down) it would sometimes simply become motionless, crouching low. I could pick it up and even turn it on its back without it trying to escape. For the first 25 minutes, I observed the female standing on the edge of the nest facing in a southeasterly direction for most of the time. She would occasionally look down into the nest, but not bend down into the nest. During this time, she preened herself on two separate instances, each instance lasting roughly two minutes. As odd as it sounds, it actually looked to me as if she was bored. At exactly 4:00pm (five minutes before my 30-minute observation was to end), the male eagle flew in from the east past the nest, looped north, then flew back towards the east and landed on the western edge of the nest. What did he have with him? He had a black, three-foot snake in his grasp! He quickly placed the prey into the nest and flew off towards the west to roost atop a melaleuca tree. Since he flew in very quickly behind the trees, there was no way for me to get a good focus lock on the event with my camera, so I was unable to take any pictures of the snake, although I'm still kicking myself in the behind for not trying to capture something, however blurry it may have looked. Surprisingly, I thought that since the male had left the snake in the nest, the female would have begun to either eat, feed her chick(s) or done a little of both. She didn't do a thing. She just stood there in the same place she had been since I had arrived - looking bored. The title of this post is \"A Snake Of A Day!\" because as I got home to tell my wife about my observation at the eagle's nest, she told me to grab my camera quickly because a Red-Tailed Hawk had just landed in a tree in our backyard with - you guessed it - A SNAKE! Enjoy the pics... THE MALE AND THE FEMALE TOGETHER AT THE NEST RED-TAILED HAWK TEARING INTO A SNAKE. In trying to ID a bird, take note of its general shape, starting with the bill and work backward. Then note the color and plumage pattern. This is a small slim bird with a narrow pointed bill, designed to eat insects rather than cracking open seeds. This limits the field, as it is not a sparrow or finch, which would have a more conical bill. As you get used to looking at birds you will start to recognize its family on sight-- whether a warbler, a wren, a vireo, a tanager-- just by its general shape, size and bill. Yes, it is a Palm Warbler. Note the bright yellow under the tail, the line over the eye and its habit of wagging its tail. Some of the yellow is on the rump, so you might mistake it for a Yellow-rumped Warbler, but note that in the latter species the yellow is even brighter and well-outlined. The Palm is also a lot more brown on top, often looking more like a sparrow. The Palm is also more apt to forage on or close to the ground than the Yellow-rump. Note that the Yellow-rumped Warbler is also an expert flycatcher, a behavior that may help identify it from a distance.. The calls of these two warblers, both common in Florida during winter, are also quite distinct. I grew up in New Jersey, where the Palm Warblers were all very brightly colored, with bright reddish caps and very yellow breasts. Out to the west, the birds are quite dull, like this one. Relatively few of the Palm Warblers that winter here are of the Eastern \"Yellow\" race, so it's fun to see if you can find one among the many. I have only seen one this year. Its photo is below. Shrikes have somewhat curved bills used as carving knives, like hawks' beaks. If shrikes could capture and hold prey with their claws, they would be classified as \"raptors.\" They actually are in the \"perching birds\" group, and they sometimes use thorns and barbed wire to do the work of claws to hold the prey while they tear at it, as well as a storage place for future use. For reporting on the form, I have been selecting the first 30 minutes (from the top of the hour or quarter hour, to make timekeeping easier) after arriving at the nest site. The form is designed for reporting only 30 minutes on each copy, which better relates that set of observations to the weather and traffic conditions during a relatively short time period. I did expand my report to 90 minutes one morning, when traffic was quite stable and the temperature only varied by one degree during that time. I did find it a bit more complex to keep track of the comings and goings of the two eagles over the longer time period. From now on I will stick to 30 minute intervals. This also should make data aggregation easier for the students, since all forms will be uniform. I asked Ms Kelly Smith about her preference in this regard, and I think she is reluctant to set down a hard and fast rule. She first wants us to know how she and the students appreciate receiving whatever data we can send. \"It is very difficult for many of the students to make it to the nest site and all of the data that we get from the community will help us with being able to see any kind of patterns in the data.\" Ms. Smith suggests that we should not select just the \"interesting times\" for recording data. She says: It would tend to skew the results. One goal that we have is that we are hoping to have as much data from each of the traffic levels as possible. If you find it tedious to complete the checklist for the entire length of your visit, maybe we can help \"randomize\" the data by suggesting that you only record the first 30 minutes or 1hour that you are there? Then, if there is more activity that occurs later, you could still write about it on [this NEST WATCH FORUM], or if it was something very exciting that needed to be recorded you could add it to the additional observations at the bottom of the form, along with the time that it occurred. That way, we would have a record of it, but it wouldn't skew the overall data in regards to traffic. ...Every bit of data will give us an opportunity for learning. We will spend quite a bit of time discussing the \"validity\" of the data. We certainly want it to be as valid as possible, but all scientists have to work within their capabilities. What a wonderful learning opportunity for these kids!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Should-I-fill-out-one-form-to-cover-more-than-one-30-minute-period-td4469831.html","images":0},{"id":"4470389","topic":"4469831","order":2,"title":"How to record \"Distance from the nest\"","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-01-27T18:21:21.888000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"More clarification from Ms. Smith about how to record distance from the nest. Our logic in choosing the \"distance from the nest\" categories was to be able to divide the distances as objectively as possible. \"On the nest\" is pretty straightforward. When we chose \"In sight of the nest\" we were trying to indicate that the bird was still visible, but not as close as touching the nest. \"Out of sight of the nest\" meant that the eagle could not be located, so it is assumed that it is too far away to see the nest, or to be seen by the observer. We are assuming that if the observer can see the eagle, then the eagle should be close enough to see the nest. It was not our intention to have the observer have to walk around the site looking for the eagles, particularly in the maleluecas. So, if you can see the eagle in the maleluecas when you are standing in front of the nest, it is OK to record it as \"in sight of the nest\". If the eagle is not seen from where you are observing the nest from, you can record it as \"out of sight of the nest\". This way, if it is in the maleluecas when you walked over, but flew away unnoticed when you walked back to the nest, we will not record them as being closer than they actually were. Does this make sense? It is the best solution that I could come up with in order to eliminate the having to guess a distance","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Should-I-fill-out-one-form-to-cover-more-than-one-30-minute-period-td4469831.html","images":0},{"id":"4886706","topic":"4886706","order":1,"title":"Fledging close Sunday April 11, 2010","author":"Al","date":"2010-04-11T15:13:34.161000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"When I arrived ,two eaglets were on the branch facing northwest, about a foot and half above the nest. I work at Lakeside Elem in Pembroke Pines. We have had an Osprey on a radio tower in campus for 4 straight days now. It catches fish 2-3 times during the school day and spends lots of time just hanging out. I have never seen an osprey on campus in the 14 years I've worked their. I'm super excited! I'm reading up on osprey behavior hoping it will stay awhile. Any insight will be welcome. Thanks, Stacey On Apr 14, 2013, at 5:13 AM, \"NewMexiKen [via Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida]\" < [hidden email] > wrote: One of my projects has been keeping watch over a Bald Eagle nest in neighboring Pembroke Pines. Over five breeding seasons, since 2008, I have collected information about their breeding activities. Dozens of other nest watchers who have an interest in protecting their habitat and learning about the eagles' behavior contribute their ground observations to my Pembroke Pines Eagle Nest Watch FORUM , and I compile the data to obtain a broader picture of their breeding biology. Here is a spreadsheet and a table comparing milestone events in each breeding cycle. Watching an eagle at its nest can be like watching grass grow. Yet, sometimes subtle behavioral changes can signal important events, such as the laying of the first egg and its hatching. Although our attention may be focused on the eagle, we are not oblivious to other happenings. Once a hummingbird appeared at the nest and perched right in front of an eagle as it was incubating. It was so interesting to ponder the difference in size between these two extremes that I totally forgot that I had a camera! Another time, an Osprey angrily followed an eagle that was carrying a fish to the nest site. Undoubtedly, the eagle had stolen its meal. Rather than flying directly to the nest, the eagle circled and flew off out of sight, emerging a few minutes later with the fish but without the Osprey. However, I was lucky enough to capture some unexpected scenes. Most recently was an encounter between several Fish Crows and a Merlin, just one day after the single eaglet had fledged and disappeared. The crows were harassing one of the adult eagles as it was roosting near the nest. I interpreted this a a possible attempt to distract the eagle so that others of the flock could steal remains of prey that the adult had left in the nest to attract the missing youngster. The crows repeatedly dived down just over the eagle's head whenever the eagle was occupied with preening. The eagle seemed only mildly disturbed. Just after I photographed one of the crows there was a rush of wings from behind me. A Merlin was in full pursuit of the crow. I must apologize for the poor quality of my photos as the light was harsh and I did not have time to switch my shutter settings. The crow headed for the Merlin's favorite roosting place, but had to yield its perch under attack. The crow actually started out after the Merlin! The battle went on for several minutes, the crow intent on returning to the falcon's favored roost. Finally the crows relented and the Merlin settled down. A couple of days before, a Cattle Egret stole my attention as it chased after Halloween Pennant dragonflies. The egret stealthily crept up on an insect (Click on the image to see the location of its prey). Success! (Note that the egret has pinkish-orange breeding plumes). Other incidental sightings of note include this Swallow-tailed Kite that passed directly over the eagle nest. A pair of Red-shouldered Hawks courted on a tall light fixture nearby. A dark morph Short-tailed Hawk, ready to pounce upon any unsuspecting smaller bird disguised itself by soaring in a flock of vultures. A Sharp-shinned Hawk raced overhead. A flock of Cedar Waxwings once appeared against a rainy sky. A Palm Warbler visited as I watched the nest, up close and personal. Flocks of long-legged waders, such as these Wood Storks, flew overhead. A colony of Monk Parakeets occupied a nest on a light pole across the street from the nest. An oddity was this Northern Mockingbird with a badly deformed bill. It was singing vigorously as I took its picture. A Gray Squirrel tight-roped across in front of the eagle nest. Some of the sightings must be classified as \"un-natural.\" If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below: http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.1638815.n2.nabble.com/Finding-other-birds-while-watching-the-eagle-nest-tp7573039.html To start a new topic under Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida, email [hidden email] To unsubscribe from Bald Eagles of Broward County, Florida, click here . It's becoming increasingly challenging to keep up with all 4 eagle family members as they are often so spread out, if visible at all. When I arrived at about 9:00 AM, the male (Pride) was on the nest. Several watchers had been observing for over an hour. The sky was overcast and visibility was limited, poor for photography. The structure has grown and now almost fills the gap between the two main support branches. The nest platform is slanted at an odd angle. Normally it would be horizontal, so it will be interesting to see how they accomplish this: Both members of the pair had been actively gathering nest materials since sunrise. The female (Jewel) had just flown out searching for sticks. She flew up into the tallest Australian Pine along the road to the east: Jewel disappeared into the foliage of the tree and flapped wildly as she tried to break off a large living branch. She was really struggling with the branch. She tried to break it off by using her weight, actually trying to fly upside down, but the limber branch would not separate from the tree: She finally gave up the struggle and returned to the nest with a smaller prize: Pride also made several forays, here returning with a small twig: The pair worked to position the sticks. Pride is in the foreground.
