We only saw one eagle, and it was on the nest. It also appeared to be panting (its mouth was open, but I could not see any \"gular flutter,\" a vibrating movement of the throat that may be seen when a bird is actively trying to cool itself). For the first 10 minutes or so, the bird was facing to the left (east) and was quite high in the nest, up enough to see its entire head and neck, as well as some of the brown body feathers. Then, the bird turned to face to the right, and for a while appeared busy looking down under its body to the front. It could have been turning the eggs, or might this be a sign that an egg is pipping? The bird then made a third of a turn to face mostly to the left again, and appeared lower down on the nest from that point until we departed. We used the Electronic PDF data entry form, and automatically e-mailed our observation report to Kelly Smith.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Thursday-January-21-EHD-minus-one-td4434988.html","images":2},{"id":"4436443","topic":"4434988","order":2,"title":"Re: Thursday. At a few minutes past 12 noon, I observed an adult eagle fly into the nest from the west. It stayed on the nest 6-to-8 minutes, then flew off to the east. After a few circles, it turned toward where Al and I were standing in the median. We got a good close-up look as it flew over the road in front of us, with an clear view of it's tail with the single dark feather on the lower right bottom of it's tail. Without landing again, it flew off high to the southwest and seemed to join two vultures circling many hundred of feet up in the thermals. I understand the need for new restrictions to keep viewers out of harms way from the traffic. On the other hand, I find it dissapointing that we won't be able to observe the nesting activity as closely and in the same way we all did last year. I'm wondering if further restrictions might prohibit us from using the median as a viewing area. And, there was NO evidence that the volunteer watchers and other viewers had any adverse effect on the behavior or success of the adults or the chicks. Before the nest was \"discovered,\" the birds had already become accustomed to the noises of traffic, including motorcycles, air horns and sirens, lawn mowers and electric company linemen (much nearer to the nest than the eagle watchers), as well as gunshot reports from the shooting range, and activities of pedestrians. The eagles actually benefited from having so many eyes on them. We discouraged trespassers and those who tried to approach too closely to the roosting birds. We noticed immediately and notified FWC when a chick was \"grounded.\" You and other veteran observers have provided a valuable educational service to the public. This should be an important consideration in trying to reach a solution to the problem. Of course, the issue is considerably more complicated. FDOT has legitimate concerns about the dangers of parking on the shoulder. In Florida, parking on the grassy area is generally permitted unless specifically prohibited. Having seen several \"near misses,\" most of us eagle watchers were glad to see that parking in front of the nest was outlawed. Presently, the FWC signs request that no one should approach the nest area. (Technically, the prohibition extends to any disturbance that is nearer than existing disturbances of the same scope). FDOT also expressed intent to place signs controlling the movements of pedestrians, at least prohibiting[specific nest-location detail withheld]. I dare say that none of us are pleased that FDOT saw fit to post no-parking signs along the entire south side of Pines Boulevard west to US-27. We fear that people will continue to park illegally, though the signs in front of the nest now are more legible and it will be hard for a motorist to plead ignorance. Pembroke Pines prohibits ANY parking on City streets, so alternatives are strictly limited. The Post Office parking lot is unused on Sundays, and seems to be a relatively accessible place to park, but its purpose is to serve postal customers. The High School lot is full on school days and is used for driver's education on weekends. Will drastic limits on parking spaces have the desired effect of keeping people from congregating at the nest site? Time will tell. As documented in the minutes of the meeting between the Steering Committee and FDOT officials, there is no guarantee that installation of a sidewalk in the year 2011 will include a safe viewing area-- it will be \"considered\" in the planning process. An elevated viewing platform would be necessary, as the proposed sidewalk will be down low and nearer to the fence in front of the nest. I am most unhappy that FDOT rejected our suggestion that pedestrians be separated from the traffic with a temporary soft barrier during the peak viewing season (March - May). It seemed reasonable to place water-filled orange barrels, connected with soft orange plastic fencing, along the side of the highway, leaving about 10-[specific street address withheld]. This measure, along with temporary warning signs to motorists, might materially reduce the risk to observers. No force on earth will keep the general public from WANTING to see the eagles. The presence of even a few observers will immediately attract the hordes that we saw, especially on weekends, last year. I have decreased the frequency and duration of my visits to the nest, not because of concern about disturbing the eagles, but only to avoid attracting a crowd. The sidewalk on the north side of Pines does provide some limited viewis of the nest, but it is impossible for more than three or four people to get a glimpse of it at one time, without moving nearer to the roadway. Photographic opportunities are very limited from that aspect.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/quot-Brown-Tip-quot-Sighting-12-11-09-td4153386.html","images":0},{"id":"4952526","topic":"4952526","order":1,"title":"April 23, 7:58am - 10:30am","author":"Ed Mattis","date":"2010-04-23T16:23:33.519000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"When I arrived the nest was empty. We can expect her to fledge when she is 10 or 11 weeks old. There are two times when eagles are at greatest risk of abandonment or loss because of human disturbance-- the first is before the first egg is laid, and the second is when the eaglets begin to helicopter and climb out on branches. In the latter case they may be startled and fall or fly before they are ready. See this table and those just above it for fledging dates and ages. I arrived at the nest about 12:30 PM and found the male (Pride) roosting in the melaleucas to the west. The eaglets stayed low in the nest. The older eaglet (Honor) sat up high a couple of times but sibling (Glory) was often out of sight to the left. You can just see the top of his head. I did not notice when Pride departed, but he came in with a large fish at 1:10 PM. I love this photo, with honor going after the food and Glory waiting patiently. Pride fed the eaglets. I noticed he deliberately fed both in turn. The adult female (Joy) joined them at the nest, but she ate for quite a while and did not feed the eaglets. She kept her foot on the fish. Honor did help herself to some prey item. After both parents left, Honor did quite a bit of flapping an hopping, actually jumping above the nest but not hovering-- this does not qualify as \"helicoptering\" which requires at least a second or two of hovering before coming down. I departed at about 1:40 PM. Very little wing exercising, 1 or 2 eaglets at a time were resting low on the nest. It was quite hot and they were often panting. Just as I was leaving around 1pm (always....lol) an adult flew in from the east and flew right along the wires heading due west and then all of a sudden turned south and went through the woods to the nest. The eaglets have found their voices as they were calling loudly! It was very fast and I didn't notice the prey item. It must have been small as the eaglets were done eating in just a few minutes! The adult spent only seconds at the nest and flew to the tall pines west of the nest along the wires (favorite perch). It was only there about 5 minutes and spent the whole time cleaning his beak by rubbing it on the bark and even in the pine needles! When it took off to the south it circled back over Pines and then began soaring in large circles slowly moving higher and to the north. It was fun to see an adult soaring so beautifully again! I hadn't caught that in a while! I took many photos and determined from them that it was Brown Tip, the male. I hope as many of us as possible can stop by this weekend and next week to count how many are in the nest! You can accomplish that by just sitting in the car where the turnoff lane begins to the high school and moving forward off the highway until you have a clear view of the nest. With binoculars you can easily see the nest and count. This morning once or twice I saw only 1 or 2 but they move around a lot and soon you will see others. They also stand high on the large nest branches and are covered by the pine needles, especially on the east side. With the arrival of the heat, they are also laying down on the nest but you usually can see a head and tail from this location! On October 15 I watched the nest from about 10:15 to 10:45 AM and no eagles were present. I photographed the nest which does not appear to have changed since earlier this month. By Dominick Tao, Times Staff Writer St. Petersburg Times The image and aura of the eagle have a clutch on countless lives. ST. PETERSBURG - She was beloved, and her sudden death at age 27 caught everyone off guard. They held the wake three weeks later. Despite cold and rain, 26 people showed up. Some, like Andrea Pico Estrada, had never met her. Dr. Janine Cianciolo recalled her patient's final moments. \"She was in my arms. She stared at the sky again and called. Then she passed away.\" Corey Smolik kept a recording of her laugh on his cell phone. When he played it for the gathered mourners, tears trickled, smiles cracked. They sang a farewell song in Cherokee, a language connected to an ancient culture that revered her kind. And then they buried Free Spirit at the place where they had all come to know and love her - the Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. That the passing of a bald eagle would move so many hearts illuminates an oft-unmentioned side of a relationship usually defined in terms of the ill humans have inflicted upon a once-endangered species. On display at Boyd Hill this spring was evidence of the ancient, almost spiritual power eagles hold over people. • • • American Indian tribes see the eagle as a messenger from heaven; the Greeks, as a mascot to Zeus; Germans and Americans, as a symbol of national strength. For people like Estrada, the birds reflect the struggles they face in marriage and raising kids. For seven months, the stay-at-home mom and amateur photographer spent little time at home. For hours every morning, after her two youngest children set off to school, she would drive more than an hour from St. Petersburg and park along the fence of the Anclote power plant near Tarpon Springs. A pair of eagles that for years has nested on a rotted old pine next to the road was raising two chicks. Estrada was there for every moment, from egg laying to first flight. \"It's like watching my own kids grow up, only with these guys, those milestones are condensed into three months,\" Estrada said. \"When I started, I didn't know birds could be great parents. I didn't know the bond they have with their offspring. … It was much more like watching a family.\" When she moved to St. Petersburg from Texas in October after her husband started a new job at Jabil Circuit, Estrada got to know the eagles almost before she started making friends around her new home. Her infatuation with them began by accident, when a stranger she met while visiting Wall Springs suggested she visit the nest. Estrada spent so much time with the birds, snapping photos and even watching over the nest during storms, she created a narrative of their lives as if the nest were the setting for a sitcom. The plot: a Mr. Mom deals with the antics of his diva wife. Dad feeds the babies, hunts for food and takes out the garbage - fish carcasses and soiled moss. Mom is the \"princess.\" \"She spends hours preening and doing her toes and refuses to come back even if Dad has been rearing the chicks for hours on end,\" Estrada said. She noted that Mom preens each feather and plucks each talon exactly four times during her grooming sessions. In May, Estrada returned to the nest one last time. The nesting season for bald eagles in Florida ended May 15. When the birds and their new offspring flew off to parts north, their nests were left empty. In a way, so was a part of Estrada's life. • • • Back in the days when most of Central Florida was pine scrub and farmland, Charles Broley ventured where only eagles dare. Throughout the 1940s, the former bank manager climbed into hundreds of eagle nests across the state, often more than 100 feet up, placing numbered bands on more than 1,000 chicks so their movement patterns could be tracked. His obsession is legend among present-day Florida eagle stewards, like Barb Walker, the coordinator for Pinellas County's Audubon Society Eagle Watch program. She feels it's her job to carry on the torch of eagle conservation pioneered by Broley 60 years ago. \"I think it's important to our children. The past with eagles is important, even before they were delisted (from the endangered species list),\" Walker said. She's had a hand in helping with nearly every one of the dozen eagle rescues or releases in Pinellas County this year. She and the volunteers she works with have so impressed one Dunedin homeowner, Arno Beken, that he allows them to camp outside his home morning after morning, watching the eagles that live in his back yard. When Beken was searching for a place to retire, his real estate agent sold him on the Dunedin home last year when she said, \"The house comes with a bald eagle nest in the back yard.\" \"By and large, I knew there would be people watching,\" Beken said. \"I didn't know how active they would be with predatory birds.\" Although the nest in his yard collapsed last month, killing one of the chicks inside, he said he hopes the birds will return next year to rebuild. For him, the birds were like a live version of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. He would lie on his roof at nights and watch the birds stir in their nest. \"They were like reality TV,\" he said, \"maybe with a lot more reality.\" • • • Patricia Terrell, mother of four, grandmother of 13, planted a eucalyptus tree in her south St. Petersburg back yard shortly after she and her husband bought their house in June 1970. In the early '90s, when the tree had grown to tower over the neighborhood, a pair of bald eagles moved in and have been roosting there ever since. For Terrell, the birds are guardians. Like the female eagle that built her nest in the tree, with equal parts tenderness and maternal ferocity, Terrell raised her kids to be strong and smart. One of her daughters went to law school. Her son, Pat Terrell, won a football championship with Notre Dame and went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers. Like the eagle, Terrell lost her mate. Her husband died a few years back. But one day two years ago, when a new male had joined the female in the nest, Terrell entertained the idea - however briefly - that the essence of her husband had returned, as well. A contractor had come to repair cracks in her driveway. What happened next added fuel to her impossible notion. When the eagle, which never once disturbed Terrell, her children or any of her visiting grandchildren, saw the contractor, the massive bird attacked. \"The eagle swooped down over his head,\" Terrell said. \"He was so close. I'm telling you, he just dashed in the garage. It was so frightening.\" She said she'll always remember what the contractor told her afterward. \"Ma'am, how long did you say your husband's been gone? Don't get rid of those eagles. He was protecting you.\" St. Petersburg Times Kay Welch leads a group in March of about 40 people at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve in an American Indian ritual to honor the passing of Free Spirit the eagle. This presents a unique opportunity for eagle lovers to share their knowledge of the birds and also impart a conservation ethic. Importantly, observers must be aware that the eagles can be unduly disturbed by unnecessary noise and movement. Importantly, visitors must be asked not to stop in the traffic lanes, and to park legally on the grassy swale, well away from the edge of the paved road. Children must be asked not to run around in front of the nest area. All this must be done politely and with understanding, but public safety must be stressed. For the next few days, we ask you to volunteer to monitor the site. A high level of knowledge about the birds is not necessary, but you should exhibit your concern for the welfare of the birds and welcome new observers, many of whom have never seen a Bald Eagle in the wild. Our Web suite summarizes the history of this nest and also contains links to a wealth of information about the life history of the Bald Eagle. Please volunteer by placing your name (or nickname) in the subject line and post it as a \"New Topic.\" That way others can see the times that require coverage by a volunteer. Suggested hours of coverage are 9:30 AM until 3:00 PM. Help is especially needed on weekends until the eagles fledge, which should be in early April. I will post my volunteer time as an example. Biologists spotted 163 of them during their recent annual count at the 1.5 million-acre national recreation area. That's the second- highest total ever, and it might have been even higher if not for strong winds that chased the survey boats off Lake Mohave during the Jan. 16 count. \"We were very, very close to a record number here,\" said Ross Haley, a wildlife biologist for the National Park Service at Lake Mead. \"At one time we counted 20 birds in the air above us.\" Six years after America's iconic bird emerged from the endangered species list, its numbers continue to soar at the lake and across the nation. And there is mounting evidence that bald eagles are staying longer - possibly even settling down - at the recreation area, which used to serve as little more than a pit stop during longer migrations from the Pacific Northwest and Canada. A pair of eagles has nested in Black Canyon for each of the past three years, and survey crews counted 21 eagles in the same general vicinity last week, \"which is way more than usual,\" Haley said. Most of the eagles spotted at Lake Mead are juvenile birds, still lacking the distinctive, snowy white hoods they get as they reach sexual maturity. Experts can't say why more eagles seem to be stopping at Lake Mead and staying longer than before, though there is plenty to attract them, namely fish, high places to perch and lots of open water. The simplest explanation is that there are more bald eagles here because there are more bald eagles, period. When the birds were declared endangered in 1967, widespread use of the pesticide DDT and other factors had reduced their numbers to fewer than 500 nesting pairs in the lower 48 states. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now estimates there are more than 150,000 bald eagles nationwide, including roughly 70,000 outside of Alaska. Biologists have been counting eagles at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area since the early 1980s, but the count method has been standardized and refined over the past decade to improve the quality of the data. This year's count, timed to coincide with similar eagle surveys nationwide, was conducted by the park service with help from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Nevada Department of Wildlife. The daylong effort involved more than 30 staff members and volunteers in eight boats sent to patrol designated sections of the reservoirs above and below Hoover Dam. The highest concentration by far was found along the Overton Arm at the north end of the park, where the Virgin and Muddy rivers empty into Lake Mead. Haley said the numbers are usually higher there, but this year they were off the charts - 93 eagles, almost double last year's record count for that area. Haley and company are not quite sure why the eagles seem to prefer the Overton Arm, but it could be because there is more waterfowl for them to eat in that part of the lake. So why go to the trouble of counting bald eagles now that they are safely out of danger of extinction? Aside from being the national bird, it is also a proven indicator species for disturbances in ecosystems, especially aquatic ones. As Haley explained it, eagles feed on large fish that feed on smaller fish that feed on even smaller fish, so any chemicals that find their way into lakes and streams tend to accumulate as they move up the food chain. Just as bald eagles helped us recognize the dangers posed by DDT, they could clue us in one day if some other chemical we release into the environment begins to take a toll. \"We'll probably be able to see it in the eagle population before it starts killing us,\" Haley said. \"Miners didn't take canaries into coal mines because they liked to hear them sing.\" Contact reporter Henry Brean at [email withheld] or [phone withheld]. Your dedication to the preservation of our local avian species, particularly our beloved Bald Eagles, is truly commendable. In recent weeks, we have encountered a significant challenge that threatens the integrity of our invaluable research data. As many of you are aware, our community has diligently gathered and documented essential information about the avian species in our region for several years. This data is not only fundamental to our understanding of local bird populations but also plays a pivotal role in our advocacy for the conservation of these magnificent creatures. Regrettably, unforeseen technical issues and data management concerns have placed this priceless research at risk. We are acutely aware of the importance of safeguarding this data for the benefit of future generations and the continued conservation of our Bald Eagles and other avian species. However, I am delighted to announce that we are taking decisive action to confront this challenge head-on. We have initiated discussions with skilled web developers who share our passion for avian conservation. Together, we are devoting our time and expertise to devise a comprehensive solution that will guarantee the preservation and accessibility of our research data. I want to assure you that we fully understand the urgency of this matter, and we are unwavering in our commitment to keeping you informed throughout this process. Your support and involvement have been instrumental in the success of the Bald Eagles of Broward County, and we deeply appreciate your dedication. Please stay tuned for regular updates as we work tirelessly to secure the future of our avian populations. Since last March I've been able to put in over 500 hours observing and documenting the behavior of our coastal Peregrines. This year I had help from Glen, Phil and Steve, each whom spent time with me and also sent me information on their own individual observations. I put special emphasis on keeping detailed notes all types of behavior (i.e. copulation times & duration, brooding time, hunting time, prey type captured, food exchanges, feeding times and intruder attacks). Particular attention was and is being paid to post-fledgling behavior. You will be please to know that the adult Peregrines succeeded in producing four new fledglings this year. Three tiecels (males) and one very large female. The males fledged on day 39 and the female on day 42. Today the juvenile Peregrines are 74 days old. Two have dispersed from their parents habitat. One juvenile tiercel and the one large female remain, but I expect that they too will soon disperse from the area to establish there own habitat anywhere from 30-300 miles away. Attached are a few photos that I was fortunate to capture of the Peregrines over the course of the last 4 months. The story behind the first photo is posted below can be seen here (www.flickr.com/photos/peregrinefalcon/4567861227 < http://www.flickr.com/photos/peregrinefalcon/4567861227 >/). All new photos of this years Peregrine behavior & development can be viewed on my website, www.sharpeyesonline.com < http://www.sharpeyesonline.com/ >. There is a new intro slide show and the homepage and under my \"Portfolio\" several new galleries. Thanks to each of you who have supported my observations over the last several years. I really appreciate it! Required training for new Volunteers will be available online. She writes (August 29, 2019): Eagle nesting season is just around the corner! Are you excited? I know I am, but also wondering “where did the summer go?” Although the official nesting season doesn’t start until Oct 1st, I’m starting to receive reports from volunteers that their pairs are already back in their nest territory! As we prepare for the upcoming nesting season, let’s take a moment to reflect on all you accomplished last season: · 422 volunteers monitored 740 nests in 45 counties · 584 nests were occupied by a nesting pair, hatching 821 chicks, of which 770 survived to successfully fledge! · Nest productivity remained stable: 1.32 fledglings per occupied nest vs. 1.31 fledglings per occupied nest last season. · The fledge rate was slightly higher this season: 94% of chicks fledged vs. 92% last season. · Despite concerns about red-tide along our coasts, monitored nests near affected waters were just as successful as non-impacted nests around the state. As you can see, it was another successful season for the eagles and for the EagleWatch program! Here are a few important updates as we prepare for the 2019-2020 season. 1. Training: All new volunteers are required to go through training. If you joined the program mid-season last year, please make plans to attend one of our upcoming in-person or online trainings. We currently have 6 trainings scheduled with a few more to be added. The first training will be Sept 15th in Central Florida. You are welcome to attend any training that works for you! Due to space constraints at some of the locations, registration is required to attend. To see the current training locations and to sign-up to attend, visit the registration page at: http://www.eaglewatchflorida.org/training_registration.html Current volunteers are also welcome to attend if you would like a refresher. 2. Monitoring: I will assume you will continue to monitor the same nest(s) unless I hear from you. Please do let me know if you are not able to monitor your nest(s) this season so I can be sure to find another volunteer to cover it. 3. Nest Database: We have updated the Nest Survey form for the 2020 season on the Volunteer website (under Submit Your Data tab), so you may begin entering observations there for the new season. The Survey123 app for the 2020 season is being updated as I type. Once it is ready, I will send out an email with instruction to update the app on your phone, computer or tablet. If you use the app version of the nest form, please use the web version of the form on the Volunteer website or hold off on submitting observations until you hear from me. The Volunteer website and Nest Survey form are password protected and use the same login credentials as last year. Please note: the login credentials are institutional (they are the same for all volunteers) so you cannot personalize them or use the “Forgot password/username” link to reset them. If you have forgotten the username or password, email me at [email withheld] and I will send them right away. The last four seasons have started with a hurricane and it looks like this one will be no different. As Dorian approaches, please take precautions and be safe! Let me know how you and your nests fared after the storm has passed. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m here to help! Separately, thanks for all the work you do maintaining such a thorough record of the eagles and making it available to us. Your latest update is great! Because of your site, this past year I've become more inspired by the whole bald eagle story in US history. Regarding the time it takes to confirm eaglet numbers, progress ... I noticed in one of the video clips I took early one morning, sunlight backlit the inside of the nest so well, I could see through \"holes\" of the nest's rim to at/near the nest base. As the adult moved i could see the movement in the hole, so was hoping I may be able to detect other movement too. I don't know if you have experimented with the video in your camera; it's nice how ISO can be cranked-up in near dark conditions and still have good results. I found that useful if a little early or late for great stills, the video still looked like a champ. I hope all of you are having a wonderful new year! It's been a while, but I've managed to find my way back to Ken's site in order to participate in this year's observations. I stopped at the nesting site on my way home from work and watched the area for 30 minutes. I only saw one eagle and it was buried deep in the nest. As most of you have already noted, viewing the nest this year is somewhat of a challenge. I had a little bit of wind coming out of the west, so it helped to move branches out of the way just long enough for me to snap a few pics. I was fortunate to capture two images that I would like to share with all of you. The first one shows the top of the head of the eagle that was in the nest (I assume it is incubating the eggs?). You can see the eye and part of the beak, but just barely. There's also a wing here, located to the right of the head. It almost looks like someone was snacking on a Great Blue Heron, but that is pure speculation on my behalf. This second image is a plain one, but it does show the tail feathers of the eagle in the nest after it shifted. The head went down and the tail came up. I had to change angles in order to get a better vantage point. Again, as mentioned, the nest seems to have grown in size, grown in depth or grown in both size and depth. Enjoy the pics! I'm looking forward to following this year's activities. All the best to everyone and, again, may you all have a wonderful 2011!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Observation-January-7-5-00pm-5-30pm-td5901669.html","images":2},{"id":"7573894","topic":"7573894","order":1,"title":"FEMALE AT PEMBROKE","author":"AlbertoRada","date":"2015-01-04T12:03:25.476000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"Saw the new female on December 31st at 2.00pm","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FEMALE-AT-PEMBROKE-td7573894.html","images":1},{"id":"7573900","topic":"7573894","order":2,"title":"Re: FEMALE AT PEMBROKE","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-01-06T13:07:45.438000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2014–2015","text":"The mystery deepens-- have we confirmed the presence of the original female at the nest at any time this past week? Judging by the amount of black on its tail tips, I may well have been the second bird as well. Came back at 10:15 just to check, but at no time did I see either of the eagles. I was hoping to see sign of nest construction or courtship. Please report any such observations. I think I need to pick a better time, as I have often seen at least one of the pair fly out about a half hour after sunrise to go fishing (or robbing Ospreys). All major work electrical line work appears to be concluded in front of the nest. The \"curly-Qs\" have been added on the lines to improve their visibility to the eagles. The sawed-off old power poles still carry two communications cables, so maybe they will need to be removed in the future. Many of the Melaleucas in the vicinity of the lines and especially the poles have been cut down, so the area in front of the nest is now a clear corridor. Best views are directly in front, either from the opposite side of Pines Blvd or on the median. There is another sweet spot to the NE of the nest, on the median just past the \"End School Zone\" sign a few yards east of the main viewing point, as illustrated below. One of the adults was sitting just above the nest when I first set up my camera and it stayed there for around 20 minutes. It was constantly surveying the area and looking down into the nest. I could just barley make out the top of the eaglets head from time to time. The adult then dropped down into the nest and began tearing off and eating what appeared to be part of a fish that was near the front edge of the nest. As soon as the adult started eating the eaglet popped up and was fed by the adult. The adult continued to feed and feed the eaglet for nearly half an hour and then flew off the nest. The eaglet looked around in all directions and called a bit. Just as I was packing my gear into the car to leave...works everytime doesn't it Ken?, an adult flew in from the West and landed in one of the pines. These are some of the shots I got.
